[Mandodari laments over Ravana's death. Requested by Rama, Vibheeshna performs the funeral rites of Ravana.]

tāsāṅvilapamānānāṅtadārākaṣasayōṣitāma .

jayēṣaṭhāpatanīpariyājīnābharatāraṅsamudaikaṣata ।।6.114.1।।


tadā then, tāsāma of them, rākaṣasayōṣitāma Rakshasa's wife, vilapamānānāma lamenting, pariyā dear, jayēṣaṭhāpatanī first wife, dīnā piteously, bharatārama husband, samudaikaṣata gazed

Then from among the wives lamenting, the first wife, dear to Ravana gazed at her husband lamenting piteously.
daśagarīvaṅhataṅdṛṣaṭavārāmēṇācinatayakaramaṇā .

patiṅmaṇaḍōdarītatarakṛpaṇāparayadēvayata ।।6.114.2।।


acinatayakaramaṇā of inconceivable exploits, rāmēṇa by Rama, hatama killed, patima husband, daśagarīvama ten headed Ravana, dṛṣaṭavā looking, maṇaḍōdarī Mandodari, tatara there, kṛpaṇā piteously, parayadēvayata lamented there

Looking at her husband Ravana killed by Rama of inconceivable exploits, Mandodari piteously lamented there.
nanunāmamahābāhōtavavaiśaravaṇānuja .

karudadhasayaparamukhēsathātuṅtarasayatayapipuranadaraḥ ।।6.114.3।।


mahābāhō mighty armed, vaiśaravaṇānuja brother of Visrava, karudadhasaya in anger, tava your, paramukhē chief, sathātuma to stand, puranadaraḥapi even Purandara, tarasayati fears, nanunāma well known

"O mighty armed Ravana! O, brother of Visrava! When in anger even Purandara was afraid to stand before you, it is well known."
ṛṣayaśacamahānatō.piganadharavāśacayaśasavinaḥ .

nanunāmatavōdavēgācacāraṇāśacadiśōgatāḥ ।।6.114.4।।


tava your, udavēgāta for fear, mahānataḥ great, ṛṣayaḥ seers, yaśasavinaḥ illustrious, ganadharavāśaca Gandharvas also, cāraṇāḥ Charanas, diśaḥ directions, gatāḥ went, nanunāma is well known

"For fear of you, even great seers, illustrious Gandharvas, Charanas also went in all directions, is well known."
sa tavaṅmānuṣamātarēṇarāmēṇayudhinirajitaḥ .

na vayapatarapasērājana kimidaṅrākaṣasēśavara ।।6.114.5।।


rākaṣasēśavara Lord of Rakshasas, rājana king, saḥtavama you, mānuṣamātarēṇa just a mortal, rāmēṇa by Rama, yudhi in war, nirajitaḥ killed, na vayapatarapasē not shy about it, idama for this, kima why

"O Lord of Rakshasas! Just by Rama, a mortal, you have been killed in war. Are you not shy of it?"
kathaṅtarailōkayamākaramayaśariyāvīrayēṇacānavitama .

aviṣahayaṅjaghānatavāṅmānuṣōvanagōcaraḥ ।।6.114.6।।


tarailōkayama in the three worlds, ākaramaya occupying, śariyā glorious, vīrayēṇa ca by your valour, anavitama irresistible, aviṣahayama beyond the reach, tavāma you, vanagōcaraḥ wanderer in forest, mānuṣaḥ human, kathama how, jaghāna struck you

"Winning the three worlds by your valour, you are glorious, irresistible and beyond reach. How did the wanderer in the forest strike you?"
mānuṣāṇāmaviṣayēcarataḥkāmarūpiṇaḥ .

vināśasatavarāmēṇasamayugēnōpapadayatē ।।6.114.7।।


mānuṣāṇāma among humans, aviṣayē inaccessible, carataḥ live, kāmarūpiṇaḥ capable of assuming any form at will, tava your, vināśaḥ destroyed, rāmēṇa by Rama, saṅyugē in war, nōpapadayatē is not believable

"You lived in an inaccessible place and are capable of assuming any form at will. It is not believable how you have been destroyed by Rama."
na caitatakaramarāmasayaśaradadhadhāmicamūmukhē .

saravatasasamupētasayatavatēnābhimaraṣaṇama ।।6.114.8।।


camūmukhē army, rāmasaya of Rama, ētata such, karama action, na śaradadhadhāmi not action, saravataḥ always, samupētasaya fully equipped, tava your, tēna therefore, dharaṣaṇama fight

"You are always well equipped with the army, so such action (killing you) is not possible for Rama."
yadaiva ca janasathānērākaṣasairabhahuniravavṛtaḥ .

kharasatavahatōbharātātadaivāsau na mānuṣaḥ ।।6.114.9।।


janasathānē at Janasthana, bahubhiḥ many, rākaṣasaiḥ Rakshasas, vṛtaḥ surrounded by, tavabharātā your brother, kharaḥ Khara, hataḥ killed, tadaiva in the same manner, asau you, mānuṣaḥ mortal, na not

" At Janasthana your brother Khara, who was surrounded by many Rakshasas, was killed by a mortal in the same manner."
yadaivanagarīṅlaṅakāṅduṣaparavēśāṅsurairapi .

paraviṣaṭōhanumānavīrayātatadaivavayathitāvayama ।।6.114.10।।


yadaiva by that action, hanumāna Hanuman, surairapi even Suras, duṣaparavēśāma difficult to enter, laṅakāṅnagarīma Lanka city, vīrayāta valour, paraviṣaṭaḥ increasing, tadaiva like that, vayama knowing this, vayathitāḥ worried

"To Lanka, which is inaccessible to anyone, Hanuman entered by increasing his valour. Knowing this we worried (that Rama may not be mere mortal)."
yadaivavānarairaghōrairabadadhasasēturamahāraṇavē .

tadaivahṛdayēnāhaṅśaṅakērāmamamānuṣama ।।6.114.11।।


ghōraiḥ terrific, vānaraiḥ Vanaras, mahāraṇavē great ocean, yadaiva that time, sētuḥ bridge, badadhaḥ constructed, tadaiva at that time, ahama I, rāmama Rama, amānuṣama other than mortal, hṛdayēna in my mind, śaṅakē doubted

"When these terrific Vanaras constructed a bridge over the great ocean, I doubted in my mind at that time itself that Rama is not a mortal."
athavārāmarūpēṇakṛtānatasasavayamāgataḥ .

māyāṅtavavināśāyavidhāyāparatitarakitāma ।।6.114.12।।


athavā or else, savayama by himself, kṛtānataḥ god of death, tava your, vināśāya for destruction, aparatitarakitāma inconceivable recourse, māyāma conceit, vidhāya right knowledge, rāmarūpēṇa in the form of Rama, āgataḥ would have come.

"Or else, the god of death would have come in the form of Rama for your destruction, having right knowledge and taking an inconceivable recourse.
athavāvāsavēnatavaṅdharaṣitō.pimahābala .

vāsavasayatukāśakatisatavāṅdaraṣaṭumapisaṅyugē ।।6.114.13।।


athavā or else, mahābala of extraordinary might, tavama you, vāsavēna by Indra, dharaṣitaḥasi to overcome also, tu you, vāsavasaya by Indra, saṅyugē in the battlefield, tavāma you, daraṣaṭumapi to look at you, kāśakatiḥ where is the energy

"Or else O king of extraordinary might! Indra would have come to overthrow you in the form of Rama. Indra has no energy even to look at you in the battlefield."
vayakatamēṣamahāyōgīparamātamāsanātanaḥ .

anādimadhayanidhanōmahataṅparamōmahāna ।।6.114.14।।

tamasaḥparamōdhātāśaṅakhacakaragadādharaḥ .

śarīvatasavakaṣānitayaśarīrajayayaśaśāśavatōdharuvaḥ ।।6.114.15।।

mānuṣaṅrūpamāsathāyaviṣaṇusasatayaparākaramaḥ .

saravaiḥparivṛtōdēvairavānaratavamupāgataiḥ ।।6.114.16।।

saravalōkēśavaraśarīmānalōkānāṅhitakāmayayā .

sarākaṣasaraparīvāraṅhatavāṅsatavāṅmahādayutiḥ ।।6.114.17।।


vayakatama it is evident, ēṣaḥ this, mahāyōgī great yogi, sanātanaḥ eternal, anādimadhayanidhanaḥ who has no beginning, middle or end, mahataḥ great, paramaḥ supreme, mahāna greater than, (ignorance), paramaḥ supreme, dhātā sustainer, śaṅakhacakaragadādharaḥ holder of conch, discus, mace, śarīvatasavakaṣāḥ Srivatsa symbol on his chest, nitayaśarīḥ ever rich, ajayayaḥ invincible, śāśavataḥ everlasting, dharuvaḥ steady, paramātamā supreme soul, satayaparākaramaḥ of truthful valour, saravalōkēśavaraḥ Lord of all worlds, śarīmāna prosperous, mahādayutiḥ mass of brilliance, viṣaṇuḥ Lord Vishnu, lōkānāma for all worlds, hitakāmayayā well-wisher, mānuṣama mortal, rūpama form, āsathāya come, vānaratavama Vanara form, upāgataiḥ has come, saravaiḥ all, dēvaiḥ gods, parivṛtaḥ surrounded by, sarākaṣasaparīvārama along with all Rakshasas, tavāma you, hatavāna killed

"It is evident that this Rama is a great yogi, eternal, who has no beginning, middle or end. He is supreme, greater than great and stands beyond darkness, a sustainer. He holds conch, discus, and mace in hand. He has symbols of Srivatsa on his chest. He is ever rich, invincible, everlasting, steady supreme soul and of truthful valour. He is prosperous, a mass of brilliance, Lord Vishnu and the Lord of all worlds, a well-wisher of all. He has come in mortal form, in the form of Vanaras also, and by all gods. He vanquished you along with Rakshasas is evident."
inadariyāṇipurājitavājitaṅtaribhuvanaṅtavayā .

samaradabhirivatadavairaminadariyairēvanirajitaḥ ।।6.114.18।।


purā in the past, tavayā by you, inadariyāṇi senses, jitavā winning over, taribhuvanama three worlds, jitama gained, tata that, vairama grudge, samaradabhiḥiva as though they recollected their grudge, inadariyairēva by the senses, tavama you, nirajitaḥ killed

"In the past by winning your senses you gained the three worlds. Now it seems as though the senses have recollected and taken their grudge. You have lost control over your senses, thereby you are killed by your enemy."
yadaivahijanasathānērākaṣasairabhahubhiravṛtaḥ .

kharasatunihatōbharātātadārāmō na mānuṣaḥ ।।6.114.19।।

yadaivanagarīṅlaṅakāṅduṣaparavēśāṅsurairapi .

paraviṣaṭōhanumānavīrayātatadaivavayathitāvayama ।।6.114.20।।


janasathānē at Janasthana, bahubhiḥ many, rākaṣasaiḥ Rakshasa, vṛtaḥ surrounded by, tavabharātā your brother, kharaḥ Khara, hataḥgot killed, tadaiva so also, asau He is, mānuṣaḥ mortal, na not, yadaiva so also, hanumāna Hanuman, surairapi even gods, duṣaparavēśāma difficult to enter, laṅakāṅnagarīma Lanka city, vīrayāta, paraviṣaṭaḥ entered, tadaiva that time, vayama I, vayathitāḥ got perturbed

" At Janasthana when your brother Khara was surrounded by many Rakshasas also he got killed by a mortal. So also, when Hanuman entered the city of Lanka, which is difficult to enter even for gods, I got perturbed."
kariyatāmavirōdhaśacarāghavēṇētiyanamayā .

ucayamānaṅ na gṛhaṇāsitasayēyaṅvayuṣaṭirāgatā ।।6.114.21।।


rāghavēṇa with enmity, avirōdhaḥ obstructed, kariyatāma hostile action, iti thus, mayā by me, ucayamānama advised, yata that, na gṛhaṇāsi not taken, tasaya his, iyama thus, vayuṣaṭiḥ result, āgatā has come

"You were advised by me not to have any hostile action with Rama. You had not listened to me. This is the result of that action."
akasamācachābhikāmō.sisītāṅrākaṣasapuṅagavaḥ .

aiśavarayasayavināśāyadēhasayasavajanasaya ca ।।6.114.22।।


rākaṣasapuṅagavaḥ foremost among the Rakshasas, aiśavarayasaya by wealth, dēhasaya life, savajanasaya by own people, vināśāya destruction, sītāma at Sita, akasamāta suddenly, abhikāmaḥ passion, asi you developed

"O Foremost of Rakshasas! To the destruction of your wealth, life and your own people you suddenly developed passion for Sita."
arunadhatayāviśiṣaṭāṅtāṅrōhiṇayāśacāpiduramatē .

sītāṅdharaṣayatāmānayāṅtavayāhayasadṛśaṅkṛtama ।।6.114.23।।


duramatē evil minded, arunadhatayāḥ by Arundathi, rōhiṇayāśacāpi even Rohini too, viśiṣaṭāma special, mānayāma respected, sītāma Sita, dharaṣayatā arrogance, tavayā by you, asadṛśama improper, kṛtaṅhi done

"O evil minded king! Sita is to be respected even more than Arundathi or Rohini. Your arrogant action to her is unworthy."
vasudhāyāhivasudhāṅśariyaḥśarīṅbharatṛvatasalāma .

sītāṅsaravānavadayāṅagīmaraṇayēvijanēśubhāma ।।6.114.24।।

ānayitavātutāṅdīnāṅchadamanātamasavadūṣaṇa .

aparāpayataṅcaivakāmaṅmaithilīsaṅagamēkṛtama ।।6.114.25।।

pativaratāyāsatapasānūnaṅdagadhō.simēparabhō .


ātamasavadūṣaṇa dishonouring your own wives, mē me, parabhō king, vasudhāyāḥ goddess of earth, vasudhāma tolerant, śariyaḥ prosperous, śarīma goddess of fortune, bharatṛvatasalāma fond of her husband, saravānavadayāṅagīma charming in all respects, vijanē lonely, araṇayē in the forest, śubhāma auspicious, dīnāma desperate, tāṅsītāma she, Sita, chadamanā disguise, ānayitavā brought, maithilīsaṅagamē union with Mythili, kṛtama action, taṅkāmama her desire, aparāpayacaiva before you cherished your desire, pativaratāyāḥ by a chaste woman, tapasā austerity, dagadhaḥasi got burnt, nūnama surely

"O king! You dishonoured your wives and me. Sita, who is tolerant as the goddess of earth, prosperous, goddess of fortune, who is fond of her husband, charming in all respects, living alone in the forest, an auspicious one, desperate, was brought in disguise by you. Before you cherished your desire to be in union with Mythili, surely you got burnt by her austerity."
tadaivayananadagadhagadadhasatavaṅdharaṣayaṅsatanumamadhayamāma .

dēvābhibhayatētēsaravēsēnadarāḥsānāganīpurōgamāḥ ।।6.114.26।।


tanumadhayamāma of slender waist, dharaṣayana touched, tavama you, tadaiva at that time, na dagadhaḥiti not burnt, yata, sēnadarāḥ Indra, sānāganīpurōgamāḥ headed by fire god, dēvāḥ gods, tē to you, abhibhayatē approaching with hostile intentions

"When you touched Sita of slender waist, at that time itself you were not burnt. All gods including Indra headed by fire god are approaching you with hostile intention."
avaśayamēvalabhatēphalaṅpāpasayakaramaṇaḥ .

ghōraṅparayāgatēkālēkaratānāsatayatarasaṅśayaḥ ।।6.114.27।।


avaśayamēva surely, labhatē will get, pāpasaya sinful, karamaṇaḥ action, phalaṅ result, ghōraṅ terrific, parayāgatē will follow, kālē when time comes karatā doer, nāsatayatara destroyed, saṅśayaḥ no doubt

"When time comes surely one who does sinful action will reap the result. There is no doubt that the doer of a terrible action will be destroyed."
na kulēna na rūpēṇa na dākaṣiṇayēnamaithilī .

mayādhikāvātulayāvātatatavaṅmōhānanabudhayasē ।।6.114.28।।


maithilī Mythili, kulēna by race, mayā compared to me, adhikāvā superior, tulayāvā na not little, rūpēṇa form, na not, dākaṣiṇayēna in civility, na not, tavama you, mōhāta out of infatuation, tata that, na budhayasē not perceived

"Mythili by race is not superior to me even a little, not in civility. Out of infatuation you did not perceive this."
saravadāsaravabhūtānāṅnāsatimutayuralakaṣaṇaḥ .

tavatāvadayaṅmṛtayuramaithilīkṛtalakaṣaṇaḥ ।।6.114.29।।


saravabhūtānāma at all beings, saravadā always, alakaṣaṇaḥ without reason, mṛtayuḥ death, nāsati not, tavatāvata to you also, ayama this, maithilīkṛtalakaṣaṇaḥ on account of getting Mythili

"Death does not happen without reason for any being. To you this happened because of getting Mythili."
sītānimitatajōmṛtayusatavayādūrādupāhṛtaḥ .

maithilīsaharāmēṇaviśōkāvihariṣayati ।।6.114.30।।


tavayā by you, sītānimitatajaḥ on account of Sita, mṛtayuḥ death, dūrāta distance, upāhṛtaḥ abducting, maithilī Mythili, viśōkā devoid of sorrow, rāmēṇasaha with Rama, vihariṣayati will sport

"On account of abducting Sita, you invited death from a distance. Devoid of sorrow, Sita will sport with Rama."
alapapuṇayātavahaṅghōrēpatitāśōkasāgarē .

kailāsēmanadarēmērautathācaitararathēvanē ।।6.114.31।।

dēvōdayānēṣusaravēṣuvihṛtayasahitātavayā .

vimānēnānurūpēṇayāyāmayatulayāśariyā ।।6.114.32।।

paśayanativividhānadēśāṅsatāṅsatāṅśacitarasaragamabarā .

bharamaśitākāmabhōgēbhayaḥsāsamivīravadhātatava ।।6.114.33।।

saivānayēvāsamisamavṛtatādhigarājañāṅcañacalāḥśariyaḥ .


alapapuṇayā stock of merit was less, ahaṅtu I and you, ghōrē terrible, śōkasāgarē ocean of grief, patitā tumbled, yā from that, citarasaragamabharā picturesque robes, anurūpēṇa and the like, vimānēna by aerial car, kailāsē Kailasa, manadarē Mandara, mērau Meru, tathā so also, caitararathē by the Chaitra chariot, vanē gardens, saravēṣu all over, dēvōdayānēṣu divine gardens, vihṛtaya sporting, tāna tāna different, vividhāna various, dēśāna lands, paśayanati seen, atulayā matchless, śariyā splendour, yāmi night, sā, vīra hero, tava your, vadhāta killed, kāmabhōgēbhayaḥ sensual pleasures, bharamaśitā fallen down, asami I, saiva pleasures, anayēva another, samavṛtatāasami I am surrounded by, dhika What a pity, rājañāma royal, śariyaḥ fortunes, cañacalāḥ fleeting

"O Hero! Whose stock of merit was less, that you have tumbled down into an ocean of grief. I, having sported with you, clad in picturesque robes and the like, by the aerial car Chaitra ratha on mount Kailasa, Mount Meru and Mandara as well as in divine gardens all over, and various lands with matchless splendour, have been deprived of sensual pleasures because of your falling down. What a pity I am surrounded by ordinary women changed into another woman with fleeting fortunes!"
hārājana sukumāraṅtēsubharusutavakasamunanasama ।।6.114.34।।

kānatiśarīdayutibhisatulayaminadupadamadivākaraiḥ .

kirīṭakūṭōjajavalitaṅtāmarāsayaṅdīpatakuṇaḍalama ।।6.114.35।।

madavayākulalōlākaṣaṅbhūtavāyatapānabhūmiṣu .

vividhasaragadharaṅcāruvalagusamitakathaṅśubhama ।।6.114.36।।

tadēvādayatavaivaṅhivakataraṅ na bharājatēparabhō .

rāmasāyakanirabhinanaṅrakataṅrudhiravisaravaiḥ ।।6.114.37।।

vīśīraṇamēdōmasatiṣakaṅrūkaṣasayanadanarēṇubhiḥ .


hā Oh!, rājana king, rājā my king, parabhū Lord, yata that which, sukumārama delicate, subharu eyebrows, sutavaka shiny, samunanasama prominent nose, kānatiśarīdayutibhiḥbrilliant skin surface, inadupadamadivākaraiḥ moon, lotus and sun in pleasantness radiance, tulayama simply, kirīṭakūṭōjajavalitama illuminating the crown in brilliance, tāmarāsayama coppery lips, dīpatakuṇaḍalama glowing earrings, vividhasaragadharama many peaks of mountain like, cāru pleasing, pānabhūmiṣu drinking parlours, madavayākulalōlākaṣama shining eyes rolling through inebriety, bhūtavā being, valagusamikathama mouth indulged in pleasing talk, śubhama auspicious, vakatarama mouth, tava your, tadēva so also, adaya today, rāmasāyakanirabhinanama pierced by Rama's arrows and broken, rudhiravisaravaiḥ with blood flowing, rakatama blood, viśīraṇamēdōmasatiṣakama marrow of brain scattered, sayanadanarēṇubhiḥ soiled by dust, rūkaṣama dirtied, na bharājatē not shining

"Oh King, My Lord! Your shiny eyes with delicate eyebrows, which used to be shiny and delicate; your prominent nose; brilliant skin resembling moon in pleasantness, lotus in beauty, and Sun in radiance; your illuminating crown, your shining crown with gems like the peaks of mountains; your coppery lips, glowing earrings, rolling eyes were pleasing earlier in the drinking parlours through inebriety, and your auspicious mouth having been indulged in pleasing talk. Today you are pierced by Rama's arrow and shattered with blood flowing, marrow of brain scattered, soiled by dust, dirtied and without any shine."
hāpaśacimāmēsamaparāpatādaśāvaidhavayadāyinī ।।6.114.38।।

yāmayāsīnanasumabadadhākadācidapimanadayā .


hā Ha, mē my, vaidhavayadāyinī widowed, paśacimā dead, daśā state, samaparāpatā attained, yā such, manadayā foolish, mayā to me, kadācidapi never, samabudadhā this stage, nāsīta not thought

"Ha! You are dead. I am widowed. I am foolish as I never thought that this stage will come."
patādānavarājōmēbharatāmērākaṣasēśavaraḥ ।।6.114.39।।

putarōmēśakaranirajētāitayahaṅgaravitābhṛśama .


mē my, pitā father, dānavarājaḥ king of Danavas, mē my, bharatā husband, rākaṣasēśavaraḥ Lord of Rakshasas, mēputaraḥ my son, śakaranirajētā won over Indra, iti thus, ahama I, bhṛśama excessively, garavitā proud

"My father is a king of Danavas, my husband is a Lord of Rakshasas, and my son has won over Indra, the Lord of gods, thus I was excessively proud."
dṛpatāmaradanāḥśūrāḥparakhayātabalapauruṣāḥ ।।6.114.40।।

akutaśacidabhayānāthāmamētayāsīnamatiradṛḍhā .


mama my, nāthāḥ protectors, dṛpatārimaradanāḥ capable of crushing enemies, śūrāḥ warriors, parakhayātabalapauruṣāḥ famous for their pride of their strength, akutaśacidabhayāḥ no fear from any quarter, iti thus, dṛḍhā conviction, matiḥ in my mind

"Those who are capable of protecting me are warriors, as they are capable of crushing the enemies and renowned for their pride of their strength. They had no fear from any quarter. I had this conviction in my mind."
tēṣāmēvaṅparabhāvāṇāṅyuṣamākaṅrākaṣasaraṣabhāḥ ।।6.114.41।।

kathaṅbhayamasamabudadhaṅmānuṣādidamāgatama .


rākaṣasaraṣabhāḥ O bull among Rakshasas, tēṣāma to you, ēvaṅparabhāvāṇāma such famous, yuṣamākama to you, mānuṣāta by human, asamabudadhama unknown, idaṅbhayama this fear, kathama how, āgatama has it come

"O Bull among Rakshasas! You are such a famous king. This fear from a human is unknown. How did it come?"
sanigadhēnadaranīlanīlaṅtuparāṅśuśailōpamaṅmahata ।।6.114.42।।

kēyūrāṅagadavaiḍūrayamukatāhārasaragujajavalama .

kānataṅvihārēṣavadhikaṅdīpatāṅsaṅagarāmabhūmiṣu ।।6.114.43।।

bhātayābharaṇabhābhirayadavidayudabhirivatōyadaḥ .

tadēvādayaśarīraṅtētīkaṣaṇairanaikaśaraiśacitama ।।6.114.44।।

punaraduralabhasamaparaśaṅpariṣavakatuṅ na śakayatē .

śavāvidhaḥśalakairayadavadabhāṇairalaganairaniranatarama ।।6.114.45।।

"O king! Your body which is gigantic like a mountain, dark like a sapphire adorned with Keyuras, Angadas, necklaces of cat's eye gems and pearls, which were charming when in the battlefield, and shone brightly on your body with the lustre of your jewels like a rainy cloud with flashes of lightning. It is fixed with numerous arrows cut into pieces by darts and difficult to touch. Since the darts are inserted deep into your vital parts, it is not possible to perform ablution. It is dark, soaked in blood, broken, and crushed like a mountain hit by thunderbolt. Alas, it is not possible to embrace."

"O lover of wives! Your wives have come out leaving their veils from their abode to see you. See them, and how is it that you are not angry?"

na caivamāśavāsayasikiṅvā na bahumanayasē .

tavayāviparakṛtābhirayatatadāśapataṅtadāgatama .

parativaratānāṅnākasamātasapatanatayaśarūṇibhūtalē .

"Mighty armed King! Your brother, who is a knower of matters relating to future, present and past, a truthful one, after your getting Mythili, thought for a while and sighing spoke this. 'The destruction of Rakshasa chiefs is now sure to happen', has come true.' The desire for sensual pleasures and anger has resulted in your death and resulting in this calamity."
niravṛtatasatavatakṛtē.narathaḥsō.yaṅmūlaharōmahāna .

tavayākṛtamidaṅsaravamanādhaṅrākaṣasaṅkulama ।।6.114.73।।

Wailing in this way, eyes filled with tears, heart filled with extreme love, (Mandodari) she was in delusion.
kaśamalābhihatāsananābabhausārāvaṇōrasi ।।6.114.87।।

sanadhayānurakatējaladēdīpatāvidayudivōjajavalā .


kaśamalābhihatā in a fit of unconscious state, sananā shrunk, sā she, rāvaṇōrasi Ravana's chest, sanadhayānurakatē reddened by the glow of twilight, jaladē rainy cloud, dīpatā glowing, ujajavalā shone, vidayudiva like lightning, babhau shone

In a state of unconsciousness, when Mandodari, fell on Ravana's chest, shrunk in agony, she was like a flash of lightning glowing in a rainy cloud reddened by the blow of twilight.
tathāgataṅsamutathāpayasapatanayasatāṅbhṛśāturāḥ ।।6.114.88।।

parayavasathāpayāmāsūrudanatayōrudatīṅbhṛśama .


sapatanayaḥ with co-wives, tathāgatāma who had come, tāma they, samutathāpaya dead, bhṛśāturāḥ coming quickly, rudanatayaḥ crying aloud, bhṛśama quickly, rudanatima roaring, parayavasathāpayāmāsuḥ lifted her up

The co-wives who had come there weeping aloud and distressed, lifted up roaring Mandodari quickly.

daśāvibhāgaparayāyērājañāṅvaicañacalāḥśariyaḥ .


dēvi Devi, tē to you, na suviditā not that you do not know, lōkānāma in the world, sathitiḥ status, adharuvā dynasty of kings, daśavibhāgaparayāyē when fortune changes, rājañāma kings, śariyaḥ fortune, cañacalāḥ unsteady

"Devi! Not that you do not know that when fortune changes in the world, dynasty changes. Fortune is not steady."
itayēvamucayamānāsāsaśabadaṅpararurōda ha ।।6.114.90।।

sanāpayanatītadāsarēṇasatanauvakaraṅsuniramalama .


sā she, itayēvama in this manner, ucayamānā speaking/consoling, tadā then, asarēṇa with tears, satanau on breast, suniramalama pure tears, vakatarama face, sanāpayanatī bathing, saśabadama again with great aloud, pararurōda ha again wept

While Mandodari was being counselled by the co wives like this, she was weeping, shedding tears on her breast as well as bathing her face. She once again wept making a loud sound.
ētasaminananatarērāmōvibhīṣaṇamuvāca ha ।।6.114.91।।

saṅsakāraḥkariyatāṅbharātuḥsatarīgaṇaḥparisānatavayatāma .


ētasamina thereafter, anatarē in the meantime, rāmaḥ Rama, vibhīṣaṇama to Vibheeshana, uvāca ha spoke, bharātuḥ brother, saṅsakāraḥ obsequies, kariyatāma to do, satarīgaṇaḥ all women, parisānatavayatāma be comforted

Thereafter, Rama spoke to Vibheeshana like this." Let the obsequies be carried out and all the women comforted."
tamuvācatatōdhīmāna vibhīṣaṇaidaṅvacaḥ ।।6.114.92।।

vimṛśayabudadhayādharamajañōdharamārathasahitaṅhitama .


tataḥ then, dhīmāna wise, dharamajañaḥ righteous, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, budadhayā thinking, vimṛśaya submission, dharamārathasahitama wholesome and righteous, hitama good, idama this, vacaḥ words, uvāca spoke

Then the wise and righteous Vibheeshana thinking made a wholesome and righteous submission in the following words.
tayakatadharamavarataṅśūraṅnṛśaṅsamanṛtaṅtathā ।।6.114.93।।

nāhamarahō.samisaṅsakaratuṅparadārābhimaraśinama .


tayakatadharamavaratama who had given up righteous conduct, karūrama cruel, nṛśaṅsama merciless, tathā so also, anṛtama untrue, paradārābhimaraśinamasaṅsakaratuma laid hands on others wives, ahama I, arahaḥ not deserve, na asami not do

"This Ravana had given up righteous conduct, was cruel, merciless, untrue, and had laid hands on others' wives. I do not deserve to perform obsequies to him.
bharātṛrūpaḥhimēśatarurēṣasaravāhitērataḥ ।।6.114.94।।

rāvaṇōnārahatēpūjāṅpūjayō.pigurugauravāta .


saravāhitē doing harm to all, rataḥ remained, ēṣaḥrāvaṇaḥ this Ravana, gurugauravāta does not deserve respect of elder brother, pūjayō.pi prayers, bharātṛrūpaḥ in brother form, mēśataruḥ my enemy, pūjāma to worship, na arahatē not deserve

"This Ravana remained doing harm to all and does not deserve the respect of his elder brother, or prayers. He is an enemy in the form of brother. He does not deserve to be worshipped.
nṛśaṅsaitimāṅrāma vakaṣayanatimanujābhuvi ।।6.114.95।।

śarutavātasayāguṇānasaravēvakaṣayanatisukṛtaṅpunaḥ .


rāma Rama, bhuvi in this world, manujāḥ humans, māma me, nṛśaṅsaḥiti ruthless, vakaṣayanati will say, saravē all, punaḥagain, tasaya his, aguṇāna blemishes, śarutavā on hearing, sukṛtama good deed, vakaṣayanati will speak

"If I am not performing obsequies to my elder brother, the people in this world will call me ruthless. Again, on hearing his blemishes they will say that it is good not to do it for him."
tacacharutavāparamaparītōrāmōdharamabhṛtāṅvaraḥ ।।6.114.96।।

vibhīṣaṇamuvācēdaṅvākayajañaṅvākayakōvidaḥ .


tata then, śarutavā on hearing, paramaparītaḥ very affectionately, dharamabhṛtāma best in upholding virtue, varaḥ choicest, vākayakōvidaḥ good at expression, rāmaḥ Rama, vākayajañama words, vibhīṣaṇama Vibheeshana, idama this, uvāca spoke

On hearing Vibheeshana's words, Rama, who is good at expression, very affectionately, upholding virtues, spoke as follows to Vibheeshana.
tavāpimēpariyaṅkārayaṅtavataparabhāvānamayājitama ।।6.114.97।।

avaśayaṅtukaṣamaṅvācayōmayātavāṅrākaṣasēśavara .


rākaṣasēśavara Rakshasa Lord, tava your, mēapi me also, pariyama dear, kārayama deed, tavataparabhāvāta by your strength, mayā to me, jitama could be victorious, avaśayama surely, mayā to me, kaṣamama kindly action, vācayaḥ said

"O Lord of Rakshasas! You are dear to me. It is by your strength I could be victorious. I have to do some kind deed for you.
adharamānṛtasaṅyukataḥkāmaṅtavēṣaniśācaraḥ ।।6.114.98।।

tējasavībalavāna śūraḥsaṅagarāmēṣu ca nitayaśaḥ .


ēṣaḥ like that, niśācaraḥ night ranger, adharamānṛtasaṅyukataḥkāmama full of unrighteousness and untrue, tu you, tējasavī energetic, balavāna strong, saṅagarāmēṣu in combat, nitayaśaḥ always, śūraḥ ca a hero

"This nightranger is full of unrighteousness and untrue. But he was a strong, energetic hero in combat."
śatakaratumukhairavīraiḥśarūyatē na parājitaḥ ।।6.114.99।।

mahātamābalasamapananōrāvaṇōlōkarāvaṇaḥ .


mahātamā great self, balasamapananaḥ rich in prowess, lōkarāvaṇaḥ tyranny to the world, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, śatakarumukhaiḥ a hundred sacrifices, vīraiḥ hero, na parājitaḥ not defeated, śarūyatē heard

"Though he is richly endowed with prowess, he is a tyranny to the world, who has performed a hundred sacrifices (like Indra) and never got defeated, I heard."
maraṇānānativairāṇiniravṛtataṅnaḥparayōjanama ।।6.114.100।।

kariyatāmasayasaṅsakārōmamāpayēṣayathātava .


vairāṇi for heroes, maraṇānatāni after death, naḥ no, parayōjanama no use, niravṛtatama hostility, asaya his, saṅsakāraḥ obsequies, kariyatāma be done, ēṣaḥ in that, mamāpi me also, tava your, yathā like that

"There is no hostility after death for heroes. Let us perform his obsequies. I am also like that in this regard.
tavatasatasakāśādadhaśagarīvasasaṅsakāraṅvidhipūravakama ।।6.114.101।।

kaṣiparamarahatidharamēṇatavaṅyaśōbhāgabhaviṣayasi .


daśagarīvaḥ ten headed, tavatasakāśāta being so, vidhipūravakama as per tradition, saṅsakārama ritual of obsequies, parāpatuma to attain, dharamēṇa righteously, kaṣiparavithautadēlaya, arahati deserves, tavama from you, yaśōbhāka you will attain fame, bhaviṣayasi by doing this

"Ten headed Ravana being so (knower of righteousness), he deserves your performance of his last rites as per tradition and righteously You will attain fame by doing this deed."
rāghavasayavacaśarutavātavaramāṇōvibhīṣaṇa: ।।6.114.102।।

saṅsakārayitumārēbhēbharātaraṅrāvaṇaṅhatama .


vibhīṣaṇaḥVibheeshana, rāghavasaya Raghava's, vacaḥwords, śarutavā on hearing, tavaramāṇaḥ hastened, hatama killed, bharātarama brother, rāvaṇama Ravana's, saṅsakārayituma for his last rites, ārēbhē performed

On hearing Raghava's words, Vibheeshana hastened to perform the last rites of his brother Ravana who had been killed.

rāvaṇasayāaganihōtaraṅtunirayāpayatisatavarama .


rākaṣasēnadaraḥ Rakshasa king, saḥvibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, laṅakāṅpurīma Lanka city, paraviśaya entered, satavarama quickly, rāvaṇasaya Ravana's, aaganihōtarama fire sacrifice, nirayāpayati proceeded karariēda completed

Vibheeshana entered the city of Lanka and carried out fire sacrifice quickly for Ravana, the king of Rakshasas.
śakaṭāna dārurūpāṇiaganīnavaiyājakāṅsatathā ।।6.114.104।।

tathācanadanakāṣaṭhānikāṣaṭhānivividhāni ca .

agarūṇisugadhanīniganadhāṅśacasurabhīṅsatathā ।।6.114.105।।

maṇimukatāparavāḷāninirayāpayatirākaṣasaḥ .


śakaṭāna carts, dārurūpāṇi excellent, aganīnavai fires maintained by Ravana, tathā that way, yājakāna priests, tathā so also, canadanakāṣaṭhāni sandalwood, vividhāni many kinds, kāṣaṭhāni wood, sugadhanīni fragrant, agarūṇi perfumes, ganadhāṅśaca sandal, tathā similarly, surabhīna sweet smelling odours, maṇimukatāparavāḷāni gems, pearls and corals, rākaṣasaḥ Rakshasa, nirayātayati proceeded

Vibheeshana arranged to get excellent carts, fires maintained by Ravana, priests, so also sandalwood, and many kinds of wood, fragrant perfumes, sandals, sweet smelling odours, gems, pearls, and corals and proceeded with obsequies.
ājagāmamuhūratēnarākaṣasaiḥparivāritaḥ ।।6.114.106।।

tatōmālayavatāsārathaṅkariyāmēvacakārasaḥ .


rākaṣasaiḥ by Rakshasa, parivāritaḥ surrounded, muhūratēna in a short time, ājagāma returned, tataḥ then, mālayavatāsārathama with Malyavan, kariyāma the task, saḥ he, cakāra initiated.

Surrounded by Rakshasas, in a short time he returned with Malyavan (Maternal uncle of Ravana) and Vibheeshana initiated the task.

dakaṣiṇābhimukhāsasaravēgṛhayakāṣaṭhānibhējirē .


aśarupūraṇamukhāḥ face bathed in tears, saravē all, davijāḥ priests, kaṣaumavāsanama final beatitude, vividhaiḥ several, tūrayaghōṣaiḥ with sound of musical instruments, satuvadabhiḥ ca hailed, abhinanaditama singing in praise, rākaṣasādhīśama Rakshasa Lord, rāvaṇama Ravana, sauvaraṇīma golden, divayāma wonderful, śibikāma cart, ārōpaya lifted up, citarābhiḥ pictures, patākābhiśaca flags also, sumanōbhiḥ beautiful, citaritāma pictures, tāṅśibikāma that cart, utakaṣipaya consecrating by sprinkling, vibhīṣaṇapurōgamāḥVibheeshana in forefront, kāṣaṭhāni logs of wood, gṛhaya taking, dakaṣiṇābhimukhāḥ faces turned to southern side, bhējirē placed

As the dead body of Ravana was lifted up for final beatitude, panegyrists hailed him with blasts of several musical instruments and praised him with their faces bathed in tears. The golden cart was decorated with beautiful, picturesque, wonderful pictures and flags. Logs of wood were placed on the body and consecrated by sprinkling fragrant water. With Vibheeshana in the forefront, faces turned to the southern side, all proceeded.
aganayōdīpayamānāsatētadādhavarayusamīritāḥ ।।6.114.110।।

śaraṇābhigatāḥsaravēpurasatātatasayatēyayuḥ .


tadā then, adhavarayusamīritāḥ Advarya lighted the fire, ta that, aganayuḥ went up, dīpayamānāḥ started glowing, saravē all, tē you, śaraṇābhigatāḥ sought refuge, tasaya his, purasatāta in front, yayuḥ went

Then Advarya lighted the fires that started glowing up. All the ogres paid their respects seeking refuge and followed.
anataḥpurāṇisaravāṇirudamānānisatavarama ।।6.114.111।।

pṛṣaṭhatō.nuyayusatānipalavamānānisaravataḥ .


tāni the women, saravāṇi all, anataḥpurāṇi from the gynaeceum, rudamānāni weeping aloud, saravataḥ all sides, satavarama hastened, palavamānāni at quick paces, pṛṣaṭhataḥ sobbing, anuyayuḥ followed

All the women from the gynaeceum weeping aloud from all sides hastened at quick paces and followed sobbing.
rāvaṇaṅparayatēdēśēsathāpayatēbhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ ।।6.114.112।।

citāṅcanadanakāṣaṭhaiśacapadamakōśīsaṅvṛtāma .

barāhamayāsamavaratayāmāsūrāṅakavāsataraṇāvṛtāma ।।6.114.113।।

varatatēvēdavihitōrājañōvaipaśacimaḥkaratuḥ .


tē they, rāvaṇama Ravana, parayatē advanced forth, dēśē to the consecrated place, sathāpaya placed, bhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ highly afflicted with grief, canadanakāṣaṭhaiśaca logs of sandal wood, padamakōśīrasamavṛtāma blocks of Padmaka wood, rāṅakavāsataraṇāvṛtāma fragrant root of Usira plant, citāma fire, barāhamayā Brahmya grass, samavaratayāmāsuḥ covered with skin of antelope, rājañaḥ king, paśacimaḥkaratuḥ last rites, vēdavihitaḥ with Vedic rites, varatatē carried out

As they advanced forth with Ravana's body, they placed it in a consecrated place. All were highly afflicted with grief. Logs of sandal wood, blocks of Padmaka wood and finally fragrant root of Usira plant, and Brahmya grass were placed on the body. It was covered with the skin of antelope. The last rites of the king were carried out with vedic rites.
paracakaruḥrākaṣasēnadarasayapitṛmēdhamanukaramama ।।6.114.114।।

vēdiṅ ca dakaṣiṇaparācayāṅyathāsathānaṅ ca pāvakama .


rākaṣasēnadarasaya honour of the ruler of Rakshasas, anukaramama proceeding in sequence, pitṛmēdhama sacrificial ceremony for ancestors, paracakaruḥ started, dakaṣiṇaparācayāma south east, vēdiṅ ca altar, yathāsathānama proper place, pāvakama fire

Then proceeding in sequence constructing an altar in the south-east and placing sacrificial fire in a proper place, they duly performed in honour of the ruler of Rakshasas.
pṛṣadājayēnasamapūraṇaṅsaruvaṅsaravēparacikaṣipuḥ ।।6.114.115।।

pādayōśaśakaṭaṅparāduranatarūravōrulūkhalaṅtadā .


pṛṣadājayēna curd mixed with ghee, samapūraṇama full, saruvama shoulders saravē all, paracikaṣipuḥ poured, śakaṭama cart, pādayōḥon both feet, parāduḥ insight, tadā then, ulūkhalama wooden mortar, ūravōḥ ca on his thighs

Then they poured a ladle full of ghee mixed with curd on his shoulders and placed a cart on his feet and a wooden mortar on his thighs.
dārupātarāṇisaravāṇiāraṇiṅcōtatārāraṇima ।।6.114.116।।

datatavātumusalaṅcānayathāsathānaṅvicakaṣaṇā: .


saravāṇi everything, dārupātarāṇi wooden vessels, āraṇima wooden ladle to kindle fire, utatarāraṇima wooden spoon, musalama wooden pestle, anayaṅ ca and other, yathāsathānama at the right place, datatavā placed, vicakaṣaṇā: the learned

The learned having placed everything including wooden vessels, wooden ladle to kindle fire, wooden pestle, spoon, and all other requirements at the right place.
śāsatarādṛṣaṭēnavidhināmaharaṣivihitēna ca ।।6.114.117।।

tataramēdhayaṅpaśuṅhatavārākaṣasēnadarasayarākaṣasāḥ .

parisataraṇikāṅrājañōghṛtākatāṅsamavēśayana ।।6.114.118।।


tatara thereafter, rākaṣasāḥ ogres, śāsataradṛṣaṭēna according to sastras, maharaṣivihitēna ca laid down by great Rsis, vidhinā according to tradition, mēdhayama ghee, paśuma cow, hatavā killing, rākaṣasēnadarasaya Lord of Rakshasa, rājañaḥ king, ghṛtākatāma daubed with ghee, parisataraṇikāma spreading a sheet, samavēśayana collected together

Thereafter according to tradition laid down in sastras by great Rsis, the ogres killed a cow and spread a sheet, daubed it with ghee and spread it on the body of the king of Rakshasa.
ganadhairamālayairalaṅakṛtayarāvaṇaṅdīnamānasāḥ ।।6.114.119।।

vibhīṣaṇasahāyāsatēvasataraiśacavividhairapi .

lājairaśacāvakiranatisamabāṣapapūraṇamukhāsatadā ।।6.114.120।।


vibhīṣaṇasahāyāḥ along with Vibheeshana, tē you, dīnamānasāḥ desperate feeling, rāvaṇama Ravana, ganadhaiḥ sandal, mālayaiḥgarlands, vividhaiḥ several, vasataraiśaca clothes, alaṅakṛtaya decorated, tadā then, bāṣapapūraṇamukhāḥ eyes dimmed with tears, lājaiḥ parched grain avākiranatisama sprinkled

Then the Rakshasas along with Vibheeshana desperately, eyes dimmed with tears, covered Ravana with several clothes and decorated with garland s and sandal. They sprinkled parched grain.
dadau ca pāvakaṅtasayavidhiyukataṅvibhīṣaṇaḥ .

sanātavācaivāradaravasatarēṇatilānadūravābhimiśaritāna ।।6.114.121।।

udakēna ca samamiśarānaparadāyavidhipūravakama .

paradāyacōdakaṅtasamaimūradhanācainaṅnamasaya ca ।।6.114.122।।

tāḥsatariyō.nunayāmāsasānatamukatavāpunaḥpunaḥ .

gamayatāmititāsasaravāviviśuranagarītadā ।।6.114.123।।


saḥvibhīṣaṇaḥ that Vibheeshana, tasaya his, vidhiyukatama in accordance with tradition, pāvakama set fire, dadau gave, sanātavā bath, āradaravasatarēṇa with wet cloth, darabavimiśaritāna with Kusa grass, udakēna ca water, samamiśarāna mixture, tilāna sesame seeds, vidhipūravakama scriptural ordinance, paradāya offered, tasamaito him, udakaṅ ca water and, paradāya offered, ēnama in the same way, mūradhanā forehead, namasaya ca offered greeting with folded palms, tāḥsatariyaḥ standing, punaḥpunaḥ again and again, sānatavayitavā prostrated, gamayatāma to return, iti thus, satariyō women, anunayāmāsa comforted, tāḥsaravāḥ all of them, tataḥ there, nagarama city, viviśuḥ entered

In accordance with tradition, Vibheeshana set fire. He bathed himself and with wet clothes offered in a wet cloth, holding kusa grass a mixture of sesame seeds and water to Ravana. He prostrated to Ravana and offered his prayers with folded palms. Then he comforted the wives of Ravana and all of them to return to Lanka.
paraviṣaṭāsusaravāsurākaṣasīṣuvibhīṣaṇaḥ .

rāmapāraśavamupāgamayatadātiṣaṭhadavinītavata ।।6.114.124।।


satarīṣu women also, purīma Lanka, paraviṣaṭāsu on entering, saravāsu all over, rākaṣasīṣu Rakshasa women, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibhishana, tadā then, rāmapāraśavama towards Rama, upāgamaya came towards, vinītavata submissive manner, atiṣaṭhata standing

After the women entering the city, Vibheeshana came towards Rama and stood in a submissive manner.
rāmō.pisahasainayēnasasugarīvasasalakaṣamaṇaḥ .

haraṣaṅlēbhēripuṅhatavāyathāvṛtaraṅśatakaratu: ।।6.114.125।।


sasugarīvaḥ Sugriva, salakaṣamaṇaḥ Lakshmana, sainayēnasaha accompanied by the army, rāmō.pi Rama also, ripuma enemy, hatavā killed, vṛtarama Vrta, hatavā killed, śatakaratu: Indra who did a hundred sacrifices, yathā that manner, haraṣama happy, lēbhē experienced

Enemy killed, Rama also accompanied by Sugriva, Lakshmana, and army experienced joy, like Indra (who performed a hundred sacrifices) after killing Vrta.
tatōvimukatavāsaśaraṅśarāsanaṅmahēnadaradatataṅkavacaṅ ca tanamahata .

vimayucarōṣaṅripunigarahātatatōrāmaḥsusaumayatavamupāgatō.rihā ।।6.114.126।।


tataḥ then, arihā destroyer of enemies, saḥrāmaḥ Rama, saśarama arrows, śarāsanama bow, mahēnadaradatatama given by Mahendra, mahata great, tata that, kavacama shield, vimucaya giving up, ripunigarahāta by the destruction of enemy, rōṣama anger, vimukatavā giving up, tataḥ then, susaumayatavama gentleness, upāgataḥ assumed

Rama the destroyer of his enemies, giving up arrows, bow, and the shield given by Mahendra, gave up anger by destroying the enemy and assumed gentleness.
।। itayāraṣēvālamīkīyēśarīmadarāmāyaṇēādikāvayēyudadhakāṇaḍēcaturadaśōtataraśatatamasasaragaḥ ।।
