Sloka & Translation

[Rama describes to Sita his efforts to succeed with a valiant friend and tells her in a discomforting manner to go wherever.]

tāṅtupāśavasathitāṅparahavāṅrāmasasamaparēkaṣayamaithilīma .

hṛdayānataragataṅkarōdhavayāharatumupacakaramē ।।6.118.1।।


rāmaḥ Rama, pāraśavē near, sathitāma stood, parahavāma shy, tāṅmaithilīma she, Mythili, samaparēkaṣaya observing, hṛdayānataragatama in his heart, karōdhama anger, vayāharatuma expression, upacakaramē started

Observing Mythili who stood near him, Rama started to give expression to what was in his heart.
ēṣāsinirajitābhadarēśataruṅjitavāraṇājirē .

pauruṣādayadanuṣaṭhēyaṅmayaitadupapāditama ।।6.118.2।।


bhadarē auspicious, ēṣā this, raṇājirē battlefield, śataruma enemy, jitavā won, nirajitā destruction, asi I, pauruṣāta with effort, yata that which, anuṣaṭhēyama worth doing, tata that, mayā by me, upapāditama has been done

"O Auspicious Sita! You are won by destruction of the enemy in the battlefield. What was worth doing has been done with all my effort."
gatō.samayanatamamaraṣasayadharaṣaṇāsamaparamārajitā .

avamānaśacaśataruśacayugapananihataumayā ।।6.118.3।।


amaraṣasaya by indignation, anatama put an end, gataḥasami I lost, dharaṣaṇā insult, samaparamārajitā gained reward, mayā by me, avamānaśaca indignity, śataruśaca enemy, yugapata all at once, nihatau by killing

"I have put an end to the indignity that I lost. I gained reward for the insult. The indignity offered by the enemy has been wiped out all at once."
adayamēpauruṣaṅdṛṣaṭamadayamēsaphalaśaramaḥ .

adayatīraṇaparatijañō.tavāparabhavāmayadayacātamanaḥ ।।6.118.4।।


adaya now, mē my, pauruṣama effort, dṛṣaṭama see, adaya today, mē my, śaramaḥ effort, saphalaḥ successful, adaya now, ahama I, tīraṇaparatijañaḥ vow fulfilled, adaya today, ātamanaḥ I am, parabhavāmi independent

"Now you see the result of my effort. I am successful and fulfilled my vow. Today I am independent."
yātavaṅvirahitānītācalacitatēnarakaṣasā .

daivasamapāditōdōṣōmānuṣēṇamayājitaḥ ।।6.118.5।।


yātavama when you, virahitā were alone, calacitatēna fickle minded, rakaṣasā Rakshasa, nītā abducted, daivasamapāditaḥ by the will of god, dōṣaḥ fault, mānuṣēṇa by a mortal, mayā by me, jitaḥ won

"When you were alone you were abducted by the fickle minded Rakshasa. The fault of destiny has been won by me, a mortal by the will of god।।"
samaparāpatamavamānaṅyasatējasā na paramārajati .

kasatasayapuruṣārathōmahatāpayalapacētasaḥ ।।6.118.6।।


yaḥ he who, samaparāpatama gets, avamānama insult, tējasā might, na paramārajati not, alapacētasaḥ petty minded, tasaya his, mahatāpi however great, pauruṣēṇa by the, kaḥarathaḥ What is the purpose

"What is the purpose of might however great he might be, if he is petty minded and does not wipe off the insult?"
laṅaghanaṅ ca samudarasayalaṅakāyāśacāpimaradhanama .

saphalaṅtasaya ca śalāghayamadayakaramahanūmataḥ ।।6.118.7।।


tasaya his, hanūmataḥ Hanuman, samudarasaya ocean's, laṅaghanama leaping across, laṅakāyāḥ of Lanka, maradhanaṅca Devastation, śalāghayama laudable, karama action, adaya now, saphalama result

"Hanuman's leaping across the ocean and devastating action of Lanka has yielded results now."
yudadhēvikaramataśacaivahitaṅmanatarayatasatathā .

sugarīvasayasasainayasayasaphalō.dayapariśaramaḥ ।।6.118.8।।


yudadhē in the combat, vikaramataḥ prowess, tathā so also, hitama good advice, manatarayataḥ tendered, sasainayasaya and his army, sugarīvasaya Sugriva's, pariśaramaḥ effort, adaya now, saphalaḥ successful

"The prowess of Sugriva and also his army, his good advice and efforts in combat have become successful."
vibhīṣaṇasaya ca tathāsaphalō.dayapariśaramaḥ .

viguṇaṅbharātaraṅtayakatavāyōmāṅsavayamupasathitaḥ ।।6.118.9।।


tathā similarly, vibhīṣaṇasaya Vibheeshana's, pariśaramaśaca hard work, adaya now, saphalaḥ success, yaḥ he who, viguṇama devoid of good qualities, bharātarama brother, tayakatavā leaving, savayama on his own, māma to me, upasathitaḥ stood

"In the same way even Vibheeshana's hard work leaving his brother devoid of good qualities and coming to me on his own has given success."
itayēvaṅvadataśarutavāsītārāmasayatadavacaḥ .

mṛgīvōtaphulalanayanābabhūvāśaruparipalutā ।।6.118.10।।

paśayatasatāṅturāmasayasamīpēhṛdayapariyāma .

janavādabhayādarājañōbabhūvahṛdayaṅdavidhā ।।6.118.11।।

sītāmutapalapatarākaṣīṅnīlakuñacitamūrathajāma .

avadadavaivarārōhaṅmadhayēvānararakaṣasāma ।।6.118.12।।


utapalapatarākaṣīma whose eyes were like lotus petals, nīlakuñacitamūrathajāma who had dark beautiful curly hair, varārōhāma beautiful limbs, sītāma Sita, vānararakaṣasāma Vanaras and Rakshasas, madhayē midst, avadata vai spoke with great discomfort

In the midst of Vanaras and Rakshasas, Rama spoke with great discomfort to Sita whose eyes were like lotus petals and hair was dark and curly and whose limbs were beautiful.
yatakaratavayaṅmanuṣayēṇadharaṣaṇāṅparatimārajatā .

tatakṛtaṅrāvaṇaṅhatavāmayēdaṅmānakāṅakaṣiṇā ।।6.118.13।।


mānakāṅakaṣiṇā that which my mind desired to do, mayā by me, rāvaṇama Ravana, hatavā killing, dharaṣaṇāma insult, paratimārajatā to get rid of, manuṣayēṇa by a human, yata all that, karatavayama duty, tata that, idama thus, kṛtama done

"That which my mind desired as a duty of a human being, to get rid of the insult has been done by killing Ravana."
nirajitājīvalōkasayatapasābhāvitātamanā .

agasatayēnadurādharaṣāmuninādakaṣiṇēvadhika ।।6.118.14।।


tapasā by austerity, bhāvitātamanā realized master, agasatayēna by Agastya, jīvalōkasaya world of mortals, durādharaṣā difficult to assail, dakaṣiṇādhika iva southern quarter, nirajitā killing

"Though the southern quarter is difficult to assail for the world of mortals, Agastya, a realized sage, has won by the power of his austerity. In the same way I have won you."
viditaśacāsatubhataraṅtēyō.yaṅraṇapariśaramaḥ .

sutīraṇaḥsuhṛdāṅvīrayānanatavadarathaṅmayākṛtaḥ ।।6.118.15।।

rakaṣatātumayāvṛtatapamavādaṅ ca saravataḥ .

parakhayātasayātamavaṅśasayavayaṅagayaṅ ca parimārajatā ।।6.118.16।।


yaḥ this, raṇapariśaramaḥ effort in war, suhṛdāma friends, vīrayāta valour, sutīraṇaḥ assistance, ayama this, mayā by me, tavadarathama meaning, na kṛtaḥ not done, viditaḥ let you know, asatu this, tē to you, bhadarama auspicious, asatu you be, vṛtatama from all sides, saravataḥ all over, apavādaṅ ca scandal, rakaṣatāṅ to protect, parakhayātasaya illustrious, ātamavaṅśasaya my race, vayaṅagama obloquy, parimārajatā to get rid of, mayā I have done

"Sita! This effort in carrying out with the assistance of valiant friends is not done for your sake. Let it be known to you. I have done this to protect good conduct and my illustrious race from scandal and rid of obloquy from all sides."
parāpatacāritarasanadēhāmamaparatimukhēsathitā .

dīpōnētarāturasayēvaparatikūlāsimēdṛḍhama ।।6.118.17।।


parāpatacāritarasanadēhā in the event of doubtful conduct, mama my, paratimukhē in front, sathitā standing, nētarāturasaya sore eyes, dīpaḥiva like glowing, mē to me, dṛḍhama firmly, paratikūlāasi disagreeable you are

"In the event of doubtful conduct also you are standing firmly like a glowing lamp for me suffering from sore eyes and disagreeable to me."
tadagacachatavānujānē.dayayathēṣaṭaṅjanakātamajē .

ētādaśadiśōbhadarēkārayamasati na mētavayā ।।6.118.18।।


janakātamajē Janaka's daughter, tata therefore, adaya now, tavāy our, anujānē permission, yathēṣaṭama freedom, ētāḥ any, daśa direction, diśaḥ quarter, gacacha go, bhadarē be auspicious, mē to me, tavayā by you, kārayama work, nāsati nothing

"O Janaka's daughter! therefore now you are permitted to go wherever to any quarter. Let you be auspicious. I have no work with you."
kaḥpumāṅsatukulējātasasatarayaṅparagṛhāṣitāma .

tējasavīpunarādadayātasuhṛlalēkhayēnacētasā ।।6.118.19।।


kulē good race, jātaḥ born, tējasavī eminent, kaḥpumāna? which man, paragṛhōṣitāma in other's home, satariyama lived, suhṛlalēkhayēna kind, cētasā consciously, punaḥ again, adatayāta accept

"Which eminent man born in a good race will again consciously accept a wife who lived in another's home?"
rāvaṇāṅakaparikaliṣaṭāṅdṛṣaṭāṅduṣaṭēnacakaṣuṣā .

kathaṅtavāpunarādadayāṅkulaṅvayapadiśana mahata ।।6.118.20।।


mahata great, kulama race, vayapadiśana thrown out, rāvaṇāṅakaparikaliṣaṭāma squeezed from the arms of Ravana, duṣaṭēna seeing, cakaṣuṣā with eyes, dṛṣaṭāma have been seen (with evil eyes by all), tavāma you, punaḥ again, kathama how, ādadayāma accept

"You are thrown out of the arms of Ravana. You have been seen by him with lustful eyes, have been seen by all with evil eyes. How can one born in a great race accept you again?"
tadarathaṅnirajitāmētavaṅyaśaḥparatayāhṛtaṅmayā .

nāsatimētayayayabhiṣavaṅagōyathēṣaṭaṅgamayatāmitaḥ ।।6.118.21।।


tavama your, tadarathama the purpose, mē my, nirajitā to rid of, mayā by me, yaśaḥ fame, paratayāhṛtama won back, mē by me, tavayi in you, abhiṣavaṅagaḥ no interest, nāsati not,

"The reason for winning you back is to get rid of the insult. Now I have no interest in you. You may go to the place of your choice."
tadadayavayāhṛtaṅbhadarēmayaitata kṛtabudhadinā .

lakaṣamaṇēnāthabharatēkurubudhadiṅyathāsukhama ।।6.118.22।।


bhadarē auspicious, tata therefore, adaya today, kṛtabudhadinā thought over well, mayā by me, ētata this, vayāhṛtama utterance, yathāsukhama where there is happiness, lakaṣamaṇēvā with Lakshmana, atha or else, bharatē with Bharata, budhadima think well, kuru do

" Auspicious one! This utterance has been thought over well today. You may go wherever you find happiness, either to Lakshmana or else to Bharata. Think well and do."
śatarughanēvāthasugarīvērākaṣasēvāvibhīṣaṇē .

nivēśayamanasasītēyathāvāsukhamātamanaḥ ।।6.118.23।।


sītē Sita, śatarughanēvā or Shatrughna, atha or else, sugarīvē Sugriva, rākaṣasē Rakshasa, vibhīṣaṇēvā Vibheeshana, ātamanaḥ your own, yathā like that, sukhama happiness, manaḥ mind, nivēśaya live

"Sita! You can go to Shatrughna or else Sugriva or even Rakshasa Vibheeshana, wherever you feel like to live."
na hitavāṅrāvaṇōdṛṣaṭavādivayarūpāṅmanōramāma .

maraṣayētaciraṅsītēsavagṛhēparayavasathitāma ।।6.118.24।।


sītē Sita, divayarūpāma wonderful appearance, manōramāma beautiful, savagṛhē his own house, cirama long, parayavasathitāma resisted, tavāma you, dṛṣaṭavā seeing, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, namaraṣayētahi not have detained

"Sita! You are endowed with beauty and having you in his own house for so long and seeing you, how Ravana could have resisted or detained you."
tataḥpariyārahaśaravaṇātadapariyaṅpariyādupaśarutayacirasayamaithilī .

mumōcabāṣapaṅsubhṛśaṅparavēpitāgajēnadarahasatābhihatēvasalalakī ।।6.118.25।।


taḥ then, pariyārahaśaravaṇāḥ having heard what was unpalatable to hear, maithilī Mythili, pariyāta beloved, apariyama unpalatable, tata those, upaśarutaya heard, gajēnadarahasatābhihatā hurt by the hand s of Lordly elephant, salalakīva like creeper, cirasaya long, subhṛśama excessively, paravēpitā quivering, bāṣapama tears, mumōca shed

Then having heard unpalatable words from her beloved, Mythili wept, quivering excessively shedding tears for long and was like a creeper struck by a Lordly elephant.
।। itayāraṣēvālamīkīyēśarīmadarāmāyaṇēādikāvayēyudadhakāṇaḍēaṣaṭādaśōtataraśatatamasasaragaḥ ।।
This is the end of one hundred eighteenth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
