[Sita gives a fitting reply to Rama and enters fire.]

ēvamukatātuvaidēhiparuṣaṅrōmaharaṣaṇama .

rāghavēṇasarōṣēṇaśarutavāparavayathitā.bhavata ।।6.119.1।।


sarōṣēṇa in anger, rāghavēṇa by Raghava, ēvama in that way, paruṣama harsh, rōmaharaṣaṇama horripilating, ukatā spoken, vaidēhi Vaidehi, śarutavā having heard, paravayathitā afflicted, abhavata became

Vaidehi heard the harsh horripilating words spoken by Rama in anger and was very much afflicted.
sātadaśarutapūravaṅhijanēmahatimaithilī .

śarutavābharatṛravacōrūkaṣaṅlajajayāvanatābhavata ।।6.119.2।।


tadā then, sāmaithilī she, Mythili, mahati large number, janē people, aśarutapūravama filled with tears, ghōrama ruthless, bharatuḥ husband 's, vacaḥwords, śarutavā hearing, lajajayā shy, avanatā bent, abhavata stayed

Then Mythili hearing her husband 's harsh words, in the presence of a large number of people, stayed bent with shyness.
paraviśanatīvagātarāṇisavānisājanakātamajā .

vākaṣaraisasasaiḥsaśalayēvabhṛśamāśarūṇayavaratayata ।।6.119.3।।


sājanakātamajā she Janaka's daughter, savāni her own, gātarāṇi limbs, paraviśanatīva shrinking, taiḥthose, cākaṣaraiḥ from eyes, saśalayēva by the arrows, bhṛśama excessively, aśarūṇi tears, avaratayata shed

As if pierced by those arrow-like words, Janaka's daughter shed tears excessively, shrinking into her own limbs.
tatōbāṣapaparikalinanaṅparamārajanatīsavamānanama .

śanairagadagadayāvācābharatāramidamabaravīta ।।6.119.4।।


tataḥ thereafter, bāṣapaparikalinanama flowing tears clean, savama her, ānanama face, paramārajanatī wiping off, bharatārama to husband, gadagadayā in broken tone, vācā words, śanaiḥ slowly, idama thus, abaravīta spoke

Thereafter, wiping her face clean from flowing tears she spoke slowly in a choked voice in broken words to her husband.
kiṅmāmasadṛśaṅvākayamīdṛśaṅśarōtaradāruṇama .

rūkaṣaṅśarāvayasēvīra parākṛtaḥparākṛtamiva ।।6.119.5।।


vīra hero, māma me, parākṛtaḥ address, parākṛtāmiva like a common man, māma to me, asadṛśama unkind, īdṛśaba this kind of tone, śarōtaradāruṇama harsh to hear, rūkaṣama rude, vākayama words, kima why, śarāvayasē speaking

"Hero! Why are you addressing me in such harsh unkind words in a rude manner, in a harsh tone like a common man?"
na tathāsamimahābāhō yathāmāmavagacachasi .

paratayayaṅgacachamēsavēnacāritarēṇaivatēśapē ।।6.119.6।।


mahābāhō mighty armed, māma me, yathā similarly, avagacachasi not as you think of me, tathā so also, na asamiI am not, mē my, paratayayama proof, gacacha period, savēna myself, cāritarēṇa my past, tē to you, śapē vow

"O Mighty armed! I am not as you think of me, so also show me a proof of it in my past. I swear on my past."
pṛthakasatarīṇāṅparacārēṇajātiṅtavaṅpariśaṅakasē .

paritayajaināṅśaṅakāṅtuyaditē.haṅparīkaṣitā ।।6.119.7।।


pṛthakasatarīṇāṅ vulgar women, paracārēṇa extending, tavama you, jātima race, pariśaṅakasē doubting, ahama I, tē to you, parīkaṣitāyadi if you have examined, ēnāma these, śaṅakāma doubts, paritayaja give up

"You give up judging all womankind by the path followed by vulgar women. You give up these doubts if you have examined."
yadahaṅgātarasamaparaśaṅgatāsamiviśavāparabhō .

kāmakārō na mētataradaivaṅtatarāparādhayati ।।6.119.8।।


parabhō Lord, vivaśā helpless, ahama I am, gātarasamaparaśama touching the limbs, gatā in the past, asami by me, itiyata all this, tatara there, mē to me, kāmakāraḥ acting at will, na not, tatara there, daivama fate, aparādhayati to be blamed

"O Lord! I was helpless when Ravana contacted my limbs in the past. I was not acting according to my will. My fate is to be blamed and not me."
madadhīnaṅtuyatatanamēhṛdayaṅtavayivaratatē .

parādhīnēṣugātarēṣukiṅkariṣayāmayanīśavarī ।।6.119.9।।


yata that which, madadhīnama mind under my control, tata that, mē is my, hṛdayaṅtu heart, tavayi you, varatatē abides, parādhīnēṣu at others' mercy, gātarēṣu limbs, anīśavarī not possible, kima what, kariṣayāmi can I do

"That mind which is under my control is my heart and it abides in you. What can I do about my limbs when I am at others' mercy?"
sahasamavṛdadhabhāvēnasaṅsaragēṇa ca mānada .

yaditē.haṅ na vijañātāhatātēnāsamiśāśavatama ।।6.119.10।।


mānada honourable, sahasamavṛdadhabhāvēna by our growing up together with love, saṅsaragēṇaca our intimate relationship, ahama I, tē to you, na vijañātāyadi if I am not known, tēna by you, śāśavatama permanently, hatāasami I am done

"Honourable Rama! If I am not understood by you despite our growing up together with love and in spite of our intimate relationship, I am done forever."
parēṣitasatēmahāvīrōhanumānavalōkakaḥ .

laṅakāsathāhaṅtavayārājanakiṅtadā na visarajitā ।।6.119.11।।


rājana king, mahāvīraḥ great hero, hanumāna Hanuman, avalōkakaḥ to find, tē by you, parēṣitaḥ sent, laṅakāsathā in Lanka, ahama I, tavayā by you, tadā then, kima why, na visarajitā did you not leave

"King! When the great hero Hanuman was sent by you to find me in Lanka, why did you not leave me then."
paratayakaṣaṅvānarasayāsayatadavākayasamananatarama .

tavayāsanatayakatayāvīratayakataṅsayājajīvitaṅmayā ।।6.119.12।।

"O hero! Had you given me up immediately on receiving your message from Vanara I would have given up my life in the presence of Hanuman there itself."
na vṛthātēśaramō.yaṅsayātasaṅśayēnayasayajīvitama .

suhṛjajanaparikalēśō na cāyaṅvipulasatava ।।6.119.13।।


jīvitama life, saṅśayē doubt, nayasaya exertion, tē to you, vṛdhā wasteful, ayaṅśaramaḥ this hard work, na sayāta perhaps not required, ayama this, viphalaḥ failure, tava your, suhṛjajanaparikalēśaḥ nor your friends, na ca and not

"O Life! If you had a doubt this exertion to you is wasteful. This fruitless hard work was perhaps not required on your part nor your friends."
tavayātunṛpaśāradūladōṣamēvānuvaratatā .

laghunēvamanuṣayēṇasatarītavamēvapurasakṛtama ।।6.119.14।।


nṛpaśāradūla tiger among kings, rōṣamēva gave yourself to anger, anuvaratatā following, tavayātu you also, laghunā weak, manuṣayēṇaiva like a man, satarītavamēva womanliness, pa purasakṛtama adopting

"O tiger among kings! You also gave up yourself to anger like a weak man and adopted womanliness"
apadēśēnajanakādutapatatiravasuthātalāta .

mamavṛtataṅ ca vṛtatajañabahutē na purasakṛtama ।।6.119.15।।

"When in my young age you held my hand as a mark of acceptance (in our marriage), has it not been considered by you? Has my devotion, character and chastity not been taken into account?"
itibaruvanatīrudatībāṣapagadagagabhāṣiṇī .

uvācalakaṣamaṇaṅsītādīnaṅdhayānaparāyaṇama ।।6.119.17।।


iti thus, bṛvanatī speaking, rūdatī weeping, bāṣapagadagadabhāṣiṇī with tears and choked throat, sītā Sita, dīnama piteous, dhayānaparāyaṇama absorbed in mind, lakaṣamaṇama Lakshmana, uvāca spoke

Thus speaking, and weeping with tears, with choked throat, Sita was absorbed in her mind and piteous. She spoke to Lakshmana.
citāṅmēkurusaumitarēvayavanasayāsayabhēṣajama .

midhayāpavādōpahatānāhaṅjīvitumutasahē ।।6.119.18।।


saumitarē Saumithri, mē I, asaya this, vayasanasaya sorrow, bhēṣajama cure, citāma pyre, kuru arrange, mithayāpavādōpahatā false reproaches, ahama I, jīvituma to live, na utasahē not desire

"Saumithri! Cure for this sorrow is only pyre. Arrange for pyre as I do not desire to live with false reproaches."
aparītēnaguṇairabharatarātayakatāyājanasaṅsadi .

yākaṣamāmēgatiraganatuṅparavēkaṣayēhavayavāhanama ।।6.119.19।।


guṇaiḥ virtues, aparītēna not pleased, bharatarā husband, janasaṅsadi gathering of people, tayakatāyāḥ left out, mē I, yā that, gatiḥ path, ganatuma will go, kaṣamā tolerance, havayavāhanama offer myself to oblations, paravēkaṣayāmi will enter fire

"When my husband is not pleased with my virtues, renounces me in the gathering of people, I have only that path for me, that is, entering fire and offering myself as oblation."
ēvamukatasatuvaidēhayālakaṣamaṇaḥparavīrahā .

amaraṣavaśamāpananōrāghavaṅsamudaikaṣata ।।6.119.20।।

sa vijañāyatataśachanadaṅrāmasayākārasūcitama .

citāṅcakārasaumitariramatērāmasayavīrayavāna ।।6.119.21।।


vīrayavāna valiant, saḥsaumitariḥ Saumithri, rāmasaya Rama's, ākārasūcitama indication from his looks, tataśachanadama accordingly, vijañāya understanding, rāmasaya Rama's, matē earth, citāma pyre, cakāra started

Understanding Rama's indication from his looks, Saumithri started to prepare the earth for pyre.
nahirāmaṅtadākaśacitakālānatakayamōpamama .

anunētumathōvakatuṅdaraṣaṭuṅvāpayaśakatasuhṛta ।।6.119.22।।


tadā there upon, kālānatakayamōpamama like Yama the god of death, rāmama Rama, kaśacita indeed, suhṛta no one dear to him, anunētuma make a request, athō so also, vakatuma speak, daraṣaṭuṅvāpi or see, na aśakata hi not pacify

Indeed, no friend or dear could see or speak or make a request or pacify Rama. at that time.
adhōmukhaṅsathitaṅrāmaṅtataḥkṛtavāparadakaṣiṇama .

upāvaratatavaidēhīdīpayamānaṅhutāśanama ।।6.119.23।।


tataḥ thereafter, vaidēhī Vaidehi, adhōmukhama walking clockwise, sathitama stood, rāmama at Rama, paradakaṣiṇaṅkṛtavā went round in accordance with tradition, dīpayamānama glowing, hutāśanama pyre, upāvaratata approached

Thereafter, Vaidehi, walking clockwise near Rama went round him in accordance with tradition and approached the pyre.
paraṇamayadaivatēbhayaśacabarāhamaṇēbhayaśacamaithilī .

badadhāñajalipuṭācēdamuvācānagisamīpataḥ ।।6.119.24।।


maithilī Mythili, daivatēbhayaśaca even to gods, barāhamaṇēbhayaśaca brahmanas, paraṇamaya greeting with joined palms, anagisamīpataḥ near fire, badadhāñajalipuṭā again joining her palms, idama this, uvāca ca spoke

Mythili greeted the gods and brahmanas with joined palms and went near fire and again joined her palms in greeting and spoke as follows.
yathāmēhṛdayaṅnitayaṅnāpasarapatirāghavāta .

tathālōkasayasākaṣīmāṅsaravataḥpātupāvakaḥ ।।6.119.25।।


mē my, hṛdayama mind, rāghavāta at Raghava, nāpasarapatiyathā never slid at all, tathā so also, lōkasaya world's, sākaṣī witness, pāvakaḥ fire god, māma me, saravataḥalways, pātu protect me

"If it is true that my heart has never slid from Raghava at all, may the fire god protect me always and so also the world witness."
yathāmāṅśudadhacaritāṅduṣaṭāṅjānātirāghavaḥ .

tathālōkasayasākaṣīmāṅsaravataḥpātupāvakaḥ ।।6.119.26।।


śudadhacaritāma unimpeachable conduct, māma me, rāghavaḥ Raghava, duṣaṭāma seeing, jānāti not know, yathā similarly, tathā that way, lōkasaya world, sākaṣī witness, pāvakaḥ fire, saravataḥ all sides, māma me, pātu protect me

"If in Rama's view, I am of impeccable conduct and so also if what he is seeing is not known to be true, let the world witness and fire god protect me."
karamaṇāmanasāvācāyathānāticarāmayahama .

rāghavaṅsaravadharamajañaṅtathāmāṅpātupāvakaḥ ।।6.119.27।।


ahama I, karamaṇā by action, manasā at heart, vācā in speech, saravadharamajañama knower of all virtues, rāghavama Raghava, yathānāticarāmi that way not walked the path of virtue, yathā so also, māma me, pāvakaḥ fire god, pātu protect me

'If I have ever acted or been unfaithful at heart or in speech and did not follow a righteous path with Rama, who is a knower of all virtues, let the fire god protect me."
āditayōbhagavānavāyuradhiśaśacanadarasatathaiva ca .

ahaśacāpitathāsanadhayērātariśacapṛthivītathaā ।।6.119.28।।

yathānayē.pivijānanatitathācāritarasaṅyutāma .


bhagavāna O god, āditayaḥ Aditya, vāyuḥ wind god, diśaḥ god of the four quarters, tathaiva ca by you, canadaraḥ moon, ahaśacāpi me, sanadhayē twilight, rātariśaca night, tathā so also, pṛthivī earth, anayē.pi and other gods, cāritarasamayutāma woman of character, vijānanati accept yathā similarly, tathā let it happen that way

"O gods! Supreme Aditya, wind god, god of the four quarters, and also by moon, and gods presiding during day, night, twilight and so also earth, know me as a woman of good character, let the fire god protect me that way."
ēvamukatavātuvaidēhīparikaramayahutāśanama .

vivēśajavalanaṅdīpataṅniḥśaṅakēnānatarātamanā ।।6.119.29।।


vaidēhī Vaidehi, ēvama in that manner, ukatavā spoken, hutāśanama pyre, parikaramaya went round, niḥśaṅakēna fearless, anatarātamanā absorbed in self, dīpatama flaming, javalanama burning, vivēśaḷa entered

Having spoken in that way, Vaidehi went round fire fearlessly, absorbed with in herself and entered the flaming and burning fire.
naśacasumahāṅsatatarabālavṛdadhasamākulaḥ ।।6.119.30।।

dadaraśamaithilīṅdīpatāṅparaviśanatīṅhutāśanama .


tatara there, bālavṛdadhasamākulaḥ young and old assembled, sumahāna gathering, janaśaca people, hutāśanama fire, paraviśanatīma entering, dīpatāma flaming, maithilīma Mythili, dadaraśa witnessed

Young and old assembled there, and the gathering of people witnessed Mythili entering the flaming and burning fire.
sātapatanavahēmābhātapatakāñacanabhūṣaṇā ।।6.119.31।।

papātajavalanaṅdīpataṅsaravalōkasayasananidhau .


tapatanavahēmābhā like polished gold, tapatakāñacanabhūṣaṇā like shining ornament of gold, sā she, saravalōkasaya total world, sananidhau presence, dīpatama flaming, javalanama glowing, papāta fell

Like freshly polished gold, like shining gold ornament, in the presence of the whole world she fell into flaming and glowing fire.
dadṛśusatāṅviśālākaṣīṅpatanatīṅhavayavāhanama ।।6.119.32।।

sītāṅsaravāṇirūpāṇirukamavēdinibhāṅtadā .


viśālākaṣīma large eyed goddess of fortune, hanayavāhanama on her vehicle, patanatīma descending, rukamavēdinibhāma golden altar, tāṅsītāma her, Sita, saravāṇi all beings, rūpāṇi forms, dadṛśuḥ witnessed

All created beings and forms witnessed large eyed Sita descending on the golden altar, into the fire like goddess of fortune descending on her vehicle.
dadṛśusatāṅmahābhāgāṅparaviśanatīṅhutāśanama ।।6.119.33।।

sītāṅkṛtasanāsatarayōlōkāḥpuṇayāmājayāhutīmiva .


hutāśanama fire, paraviśanatīma entering, mahābhāgāma noble, tāṅsītāma Sita, kṛtasanāḥ dark, tarayaḥ three, lōkāḥ worlds, puṇayāma blessed, ājayāhutīmiva like ghee offered to fire, dadṛśuḥ witnessed

All the three worlds witnessed noble dark Sita entering the fire, like ghee offered to fire.
paracukaruśuḥsatariyaḥsaravāsatāṅdṛṣaṭavāhavayavāhavē ।।6.119.34।।

patanatīṅsaṅsakṛtāṅmanaranasasairavasōradārāmivādhavarē .


adhavarē priests, manasasaraiḥ recitation of sacred verses, saṅsakṛtāma traditionally, vasōḥ dwelling there, dhārāmiva like the flow, havayavāhavē in sacrificial fire, patanatīma falling, tāma her, dṛṣaṭavā seeing, saravāḥ all, satariyaḥwomen, paracukaruśuḥfled screaming

All the women who stood there fled, screaming on seeing Sita falling into fire, like the flow of ghee poured continuously into sacrificial fire reciting sacred verses by priests.
dadṛśusatāṅtarayōlōkādēvaganadharavadānavāḥ ।।6.119.35।।

śasatāṅpatanatīṅnirayētarivivādadhēvatāmiva .


tarayaḥ three, lōkāḥ worlds, dēvaganadharavadānavāḥ Devas, Gandharvas and Danavas, śasatāma extolled her, nirayē hell, taridivāta three worlds, patanatīma fallen, dēvatāmiva like goddess, tāma they, dadṛśuḥ saw

All the Devas, Gandharvas and Danavas of the three worlds who witnessed her falling, extolled her as if goddess was falling from heaven into hell.
tasayāmaganiṅviśanatayāṅtuhāhētivipulaḥsavanaḥ ।।6.119.36।।

rakaṣasāṅvānarāṇāṅ ca samababhūvādabhutōpamaḥ .


tasayāma while she, aganima fire, viśanatayāma entering into fire, rakaṣasāma Rakshasas, vānarāṇāṅ ca Vanaras also, adabhutōpamaḥ wonderful, hāhāiti Ha Ha like this, vipulaḥ loud, savanaḥ voice, samababhūva made

While Sita was entering the fire the Rakshasas and the Vanaras made loud noises saying, 'Ha Ha wonderful'.
।। itayāraṣēvālamīkīyēśarīmadarāmāyaṇēdikāvayēyudadhakāṇaḍēēkōnaviṅśatayutataraśatatamasasaragaḥ ।।
This is the end of one hundred and nineteenth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
