Sloka & Translation

[ Mahaparsva advises Ravana to force Sita, and Ravana expresses his inability to do so because of the curse pronounced by Brahma. ]

rāvaṇaṅkruddhamājñāyamahāpārśvōmahābalaḥ .

muhūrtamanusañcintyaprāñjalirvākyamabravīt ।।6.13.1।।


rāvaṇam Ravana, kṛddham became angry, ājñāya: having realized, mahābalaḥ one of extraordinary strength, mahāpārśvaḥ Mahaparsva, muhūrtam for a short time, anusañcintya: thinking of pleasing, prāñjaliḥ greeting with folded palms, vākyam these words, abravīt spoke.

Having realized that Ravana has become angry, Mahaparsva of extraordinary strength, thinking of pleasing him for a while greeting him with folded palms, spoke.
yaḥkhalvapivanaṅprāpyamṛgavyālaniṣēvitam .

napibēnmadhusamprāpyasanarōbāliśōbhavēt ।।6.13.2।।


yaḥ whoever, naraḥ human being, mṛgavyālaniṣēvitam inhabited by wild animals and snakes, vanam forest, prāpya: reached, madhu: for honey, samprāpya: that which has been obtained, napibēt not drink, saḥ he, dhruvam surely, bāliśaḥ childish.

"Having reached a forest inhabited by wild animals and snakes for honey, whoever does not drink the honey obtained is surely a childish one."
īśvarasyēśvaraḥkō.stitavaśatrunibarhaṇa: .

ramasvasahavaidēhyāśatrūnākramyamūrdhasu ।।6.13.3।।


śatrunibarhaṇa: destroyer of foes, īśvarasya: to Lord, īśvaraḥ Lord, kaḥ who, asti: so be it, śatrūn enemy, mūrdhasu: on the head, ākramya: setting your feet, vaidēhyā: Vaidehi, saha: with, ramasva: you may sport.

"O Destroyer of foes! Who is there to question Lord since you are Lord? Setting your foot on the head of enemy you may sport with Sita."
balātkukkuṭavṛttēnapravartasvamahābala: .

ākramyākramyasītāṅvaitāṅbhuṅ kṣvacaramasvaca ।।6.13.4।।


mahābala: of great strength, balāt forcibly, kukkuṭavṛttēna: like the cock again and again, pravartasva: using force, tāṅsītām on that Sita, ākramya: taking hold, bhuṅ kṣva: enjoy, ramasvaca: and revel.

"(O Ravana) of great strength! Take hold of Sita forcibly like the cock, enjoy and revel with her."
labdhakāmasyatēpaścādāgamiṣyatiyadbhayam .

prāptamaprāptakālaṅvāsarvaṅpratisahiṣyati ।।6.13.5।।


labdakāmasya: after fulfilling your desire, tē to you, paścāt in case, yadbhayam fear of her, āgamiṣyatiprāptam let it come, aprāptakālam that which is yet to come, sarvam everything, pratisahiṣyati: you will be able to face.

"When you have fulfilled your desire, why fear? Let it happen. Let that which is yet to come, happen. You will be able to face."
kumbhakarṇassahāsmābhirindrajiccamahābalaḥ .

pratiṣēdhayituṅśaktausavajramapivajriṇam ।।6.13.6।।


asmābhissaha: along with us, kumbhakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, mahābalaḥ one of extraordinary strength, indrajit ca: even Indrajith, savajram wielder of thunder bolt, Indra, vajriṇam thunderbolt, api: also, pratiṣēdhayitum to ward off, śaktau: have the power.

"Kumbhakarna accompanied by Indrajith of extraordinary strength have the power to ward off even if Indra, armed with thunderbolt comes."
upapradānaṅsāntvaṅvābhēdaṅvākuśalaiḥkṛtam .

samatikramyadaṇḍēnasiddhimarthēṣurōcayē ।।6.13.7।।


kuśalaiḥ wise people, kṛtam done, upapradānam charity, sāntvaṅvā: Sama (conciliation) or, bhēdaṅvā: or by bedha (dissension), samatikramya: leaving these, arthēṣu: means, daṇḍēna: by d and a (force ), siddhim success, rōcayē: attained.

"Leaving aside charity, conciliation or even by showing dissension, the three means resorted to by the wise people, you will attain success by force."
ihaprāptānvayaṅsarvān śatrūṅstavamahābala: .

vaśēśastrapratāpēnakariṣyāmōnasaṅśayaḥ ।।6.13.8।।


mahābala: powerful one, vayam we, iha: here, prāptān on arriving, tama: him, sarvān all, śatrūn enemies, śastrapratāpēna: by the strength of arms, vaśē: bring under your control, kariṣyāmaḥ will do, saṅśayaḥ doubt, na: not.

"O Ravana of extraordinary strength! We will bring all your enemies under control on their arrival here. There is no doubt."
ēvamuktastadārājāmahāpārśvēnarāvaṇaḥ .

tasyasampūjayanvākyamidaṅvacanamabravīt ।।6.13.9।।


tadā: then, mahāpārśvēna: by Mahaparsva, ēvam in that way, uktaḥ having spoken, rājā: king, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, tasya: his, vākyam statement, sampūjayan feeling happy, idam these, vacanam words, abravīt spoke.

Ravana, the king of Rakshasas feeling happy about the statement of Mahaparsva, spoke these words.
mahāpārśvanibōdhatvaṅrahasyaṅkiñcidātmana: .

ciravṛttaṅtadākhyāsyēyadavāptaṅpurāmayā ।।6.13.10।।


mahāpārśva: O Mahaparsva!, ātmanaḥ I myself, kiñcit certain, rahasyam secret, nibōdha: listen to, purā: earlier, mayā: by me, yat that which, avāptam happened, ciravṛttam long time ago, tat that, ākhyāsyē: will tell.

"O Mahaparsva! I have certain secret that happened in the past. It was a long time ago and I shall tell you. Listen to it."
pitāmahasyabhavanaṅgacchantīṅpuñjikasthalām .

cañcūryamāṇāmadrākṣamākāśē.gniśikhāmiva ।।6.13.11।।


pitāmahasya: Brahma the grandfather, bhavanam abode, gacchantīm while going, ākāśē: in the sky, cañcuryamāṇām concealing herself, agniśikhāmiva: like the flame of fire, puñjikasthalām Punjikasthala, adrākṣam saw.

"While I was going in the sky to the abode of Grandfather Brahma, I saw a celebrated one called Punjikasthala flying concealing herself, glowing like the flame of the fire."
sāprasahyamayābhuktākṛtāvivasanātataḥ .

svayambhūbhavanaṅprāptālōlitānalinīyathā ।।6.13.12।।


vivasanā: stripped of clothes, kṛtā: did, sā: to her, mayā: by me, prasahya: forcibly, bhuktā: enjoyed her, tataḥ then, lōlitā: shaken violently, nalinīyathā: like the lotus stem, svayambhūbhavanam abode of self-born Brahma, gatā: went.

"Then her clothes were stripped off by me forcibly and enjoyed her. Then like a violently shaken lotus stem, she went to the abode of Brahma."
taccatasyatadāmanyējñātamāsīnmahātmanaḥ .

athasaṅkupitōdēvōmāmidaṅvākyamabravīt ।।6.13.13।।


tadā: then, tacca: that incident, mahātmanaḥ high- souled, tasya: it, jñātam known, āsīt as it happened, manyē: I believe, atha: and then, saṅkupitaḥ highly enraged, dēvō: Brahma, māṅ: to me, idam these, vākyam statement, abravīt spoke.

"Then the high- souled Brahma happened to know about that incident, I believe. Enraged Brahma made this statement to me."
adyaprabhṛtiyāmanyābalānnārīṅgamiṣyasi .

tadātēśatadhāmūrdhāphaliṣyatinasaṅśayaḥ ।।6.13.14।।


adyaprabhṛti: from today onwards, anyām other, nārīm women, gamiṣyasi: reach, tadā: then, tē: your, mūrdā: head, śatadhāphaliṣyati: will break into hundred pieces, saṅśaya: doubt, na: no.

"From today onwards if you desire to resort to a woman forcefully, your head will break into a hundred pieces. There is no doubt."
ityahaṅtasyaśāpasyabhītaḥprasabhamēvatām .

nārōhayēbalātsītāṅvaidēhīṅśayanēśubhē ।।6.13.15।।


iti: thus, tasya: that, śāpasya: on account of that curse, bhītaḥ frightened, aham I, vaidēhīm to Vaidehi, sītām Sita prasabhamēva: perforce, balāt by strength, śubhē: lustrous, śayanē: bed nārōhayē: not able to get.

"Thus, frightened on account of his curse, I do not perforce to get her to my lustrous bed."
sāgarasyēnamēvēgōmārutasyēvamēgatiḥ .

naitaddāśarathirvēdahyāsādayatitēnamām ।।6.13.16।।


mē: my, vēgaḥ speed, sāgarasyēva: like that of ocean, mē: to me, gatiḥ movement, mārutasyēna: like that of wind, ētat all this, dāśarathiḥ Rama, son of Dasaratha, navēda: not know, tēna: therefore, mām me, āsādayatihi: coming to attack.

"My speed is like that of the ocean, my movement is like that of the wind and Dasaratha's son does not know this. Therefore, he is coming to attack me."
kōhisiṅhamivāsīnaṅsuptaṅgiriguhāśayē .

kruddhaṅmṛtyumivā.sīnaṅsambhōdhayitumicchati ।।6.13.17।।


giriguhāśayē: dwelling in the mountain cave, āsīnam seated, suptam sleeping, siṅham iva: lion like, āsīnam seated, kruddham one who is angry mṛtyum iva: like waking up death, kōhi: What sort of a person, sambhōdhayitum instigating, icchati: desiring.

"He is waking me up like waking up a lion sleeping in the mountain cave. Like waking up death from sleep, he is desiring to instigate me. What sort of a person is he?"
namattōniśitānbāṇāndvijihvānpannagāniva .

rāmaḥpaśyatisaṅgrāmētēnamāmabhigacchati ।।6.13.18।।


rāmaḥ Rama, mattaḥ from me, niśitān sharp, dvijihvān of forked flame like fire, pannagāniva: like snakes, bāṇān arrows, saṅgrāmē: in combat, napaśyati: not seen, tēna: so, mām at me, abhigacchati: coming towards.

"Rama has not seen my sharp arrows in comb at that are like the forked flame like the tongues of snakes. So, he is coming towards me."
kṣipraṅvajrasamairbāṇaiśśatathākārmukacyutaiḥ .

rāmamādīpayiṣyāmiulkābhirivakuñjaram ।।6.13.19।।


śatathā: in hundreds, kārmukacyutaiḥ released from my bow, vajrasamaiḥ like thunderbolt, bāṇaiḥ arrows, rāmam at Rama, ulkābhiḥ meteors, kuñjaram iva: like the elephants, kṣipram at once, ādīpayiṣyāmi: I will blaze up.

At once with thunderbolts and meteor like arrows released from my bow will blaze up Rama just like fire sticks whirled at elephants.
taccāsyabalamādāsyēbalēnamahatāvṛtaḥ .

uditassavitākālēnakṣatrāṇāmivaprabhām ।।6.13.20।।


mahatā: huge, balēna: army, vṛtaḥ surrounded by, kālē: early, morning uditaḥ rising, savitā: Sun, nakṣatrāṇāmiva: like the stars, prabhām with radiance, asya: his, tat that, balam army, ādāsyē: split up.

"Surrounded by a huge army I will split up his army like the morning Sun splits up stars with his radiance."
navāsanēnāpisahasracakṣuṣāyudhā.smiśakyōvaruṇēnavāpunaḥ .

mayātviyaṅbāhubalēnanirjitāpurāpurīvaiśravaṇēnapālitā ।।6.13.21।।


sahasracakṣuṣā: thousand eyed one, Indra, vāsavēnāpi: even Lord of gods, varuṇēnavā: even Lord Varuna, punaḥ again, yudhā: in combat, naśakyaḥ not possible āsmi: to with stand me, purā: in the past, vaiśravaṇēna: by Kubera, pālitā: ruled, iyaṅpurī: this city, mayā: by me, bāhubalēnā: huge strength, nirjitā: won.

"Even for the thousand eyed Indra or Lord Varuna it is not possible to withstand me in combat. In the past I have won this city ruled by Kubera with huge strength."
