[ Vibheeshana advises Ravana to give away Sita to Sri Rama before the Rakshasas are pierced by Rama. ]

निशाचरेन्द्रस्यनिशम्यवाक्यंसकुम्भकर्णस्यचगर्जितानि ।

विभीषणोराक्षसराजमुख्यमुवाचवाक्यंहितमर्थयुक्तम् ।।6.14.1।।


विभीषणः Vibheeshana, निशाचरेन्द्रस्य: the Lord of Rakshasas, वाक्यम् statement, कुम्भकर्णस्य: Kumbhakarna's, गर्जितानि: roaring, निशम्य: looking at, हितम् good, अर्थयुक्तम् meaningful, वाक्यम् statement, राक्षसराजमुख्यम् king of Rakshasas, उवाच: said.

On hearing the statement of the Lord of Rakshasas and roaring of Kumbhakarna, looking at Ravana the king of Rakshasas, Vibheeshana said these good words appropriate of a noble person.
न्तरभोगराशिश्चिन्ताविषस्सुस्मिततीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रः ।

पञ्चाङ्गुलीपञ्चशिरोऽतिकायस्सीतामहाहिस्तवकेनराजन् ।।6.14.2।।


राजन् O king, बाह्वन्तरभोगराशिः who has the hood at her bosom, चिन्ताविषः poison of grief, सुस्मिततीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रः has sharp fangs behind her gentle smile, पञ्चाङ्गुलीपञ्चशिरोऽतिकायः has her five fingers of the palm like five heads of snake, सीतामहाहिः snake called Sita, केन: why, तववृतः you desired.

"O king Why have you desired Sita who has snake hood at her bosom, has poison of grief, has sharp fangs behind her gentle smile and has five fingers of her palm as five heads of snake called Sita?"
यावन्नलङ्कांसमभिद्रवन्तिवलीमुखाःपर्वतकूटमात्राः ।

दष्ट्रायुधाश्चैवनखायुधाश्चप्रदीयतांदाशरथायमैथिली ।।6.14.3।।


पर्वतकूटमात्राः of mountain like form, दंष्ट्रायुधाः who have teeth as weapons, नखायुधाश्च: and claws as weapons, वलीमुखाः monkeys, यावत् all of them, लङ्काम् to Lanka, नसमभिद्रवन्ति: before reaching, दाशरथाय: to Rama, मैथिली: Mythili, प्रदीयताम् give away.

"Before the monkeys of mountain like form whose teeth and claws are like weapons reach Lanka, give away Mythili to Rama."
यावन्नगृह्णन्तिशिरांसिबाणारामेरिताराक्षसपुङ्गवानाम् ।

वज्रोपमावायुसमानवेगाःप्रदीयतांदाशरथायमैथिली ।।6.14.4।।


वज्रोसमाः equal to thunderbolt, वायुसमानवेगाः speed of wind, रामेरिताः released by Rama, बाणाः arrows, राक्षसपुङ्गवानाम् leaders of Rakshasas, शिरांसि: heads, यावत् l, नगृह्णन्ति: take away, मैथिली: Mythili, दाशरथाय: to Rama son of Dasaratha, प्रदीयताम् give away.

"Give away Mythili to Rama before he releases arrows like that of thunder bolt with the speed of wind and take away the heads of the leader."
नकुम्भकर्णेन्द्रजितौचराजंस्तथामहापार्श्वमहोदरौवा ।

निकुम्भकुम्भौचतथाऽतिकायःस्थातुंनशक्तायुधिराघवस्य ।।6.14.5।।


राजन् O king, कुम्भकर्णेन्द्रजितौ: either Kumbhakarna or Indrajith, तथा: so also, महापार्श्वमहोदरौवा: Mahaparsva, Mahodara or, निकुम्भकुम्भौ: Nikumbha or Kumbha, तथा: so also, अतिकायः Athikaya, युधि: in combat, राघवस्य: at Raghava, स्थातुम् to face, शक्ता: न: not possible.

"O King It will not be possible for either Kumbhakarna or Indrajith so also for Mahaparsva not even Mahodara, so also for Nikumbha or Kumbha and Athikaya to face Rama in combat."
जीवंस्तुरामस्यनमोक्ष्यसेत्वंगुप्तस्सवित्राप्यथवामरुद्भि: ।

नवासवस्याङ्कगतोनमृत्योर्नभोनपाताळमनुप्रविष्टः ।।6.14.6।।


त्वम् you, सवित्रा: Sun, अथवा: or else, मरुद्भि: even wind god, गुप्तः guarded, जीवन् with life, रामस्य: Rama's arrows, नमोक्ष्यसे: will not leave, वासवस्य: Indra's, अङ्कगतः sit on lap of, न not, मृत्योः death god, न: not, नभः heaven, पातालम् underworld (under water), अनुप्रविष्टः enter also, न: not.

"Rama's arrows will not leave you with life even if you are guarded by Sun or wind god, not even if you sit on the lap of Indra or death god or even if you enter the sky or under water."
निशम्यवाक्यंतुविभीषणस्यततःप्रहस्तोवचनंबभाषे ।

ननोभयंविद्मनदैवतेभ्योनदानवेभ्योऽप्यथवाकुतश्चित् ।।6.14.7।।


विभीषणस्य: Vibheeshana's, वाक्यम् words, निशम्य: having heard ततः thereafter, प्रहास्तः Prahastha, वचनम् words, बभाषे: told by, नः no, भयम् fear, नविद्म: do not know, दैवतेभ्यः of gods, नअथवा: not even, दानवेभ्यः Rakshasas, कुतश्चित् anyone, न: no.

After hearing the words said by Vibheeshana, Prahastha spoke these words, we do not know the fear of gods or Rakshasas or anyone.
नयक्षगन्धर्वमहोरगेभ्योभयंनसंख्येपतगोरगेभ्यः ।

कथंनुरामाद्भविताभयंनोनरेन्द्रपुत्रात्समरेकदाचित् ।।6.14.8।।


यक्षगन्धर्वमहोरगेभ्यः Yakshas, Gandharvas, Nagas, संख्ये: in battle, भयम् fear, न: no, पतगोरगेभ्यः birds and reptiles, न: no, नरेन्द्रपुत्रात् of the king's sons, रामात् from Rama, नः no, कदाचित् even a little, समरे: in war, भयम् fear, कथम् what, भविता: will be?

"We are not afraid of Yakshas, Gandharvas, or even Nagas. We have no fear of birds or reptiles. What fear can we have of the king's son, Rama?"
प्रहस्तवाक्यंत्वहितंनिशम्यविभीषणोराजहितानुकाङ्क्षी ।

ततोमहार्थंवचनंबभाषेधर्मार्थकामेषुनिविष्टबुद्धि:।। 6.14.9।।


ततः then, राजहितानुकाङ्क्षी: desiring king's welfare, धर्मार्थकामेषु: dharma (righteousness) artha (material prosperity) and Kama (sensual desires), निविष्टबुद्धि: thinking deeply and rightly, विभीषणः Vibheeshana, अहितम् that which is not good, प्रहस्तवाक्यम् Prahastha's word, निशम्य: hearing, महार्थम् well meaning, वचनम् words, बभाषे: spoke.

Then Vibheeshana, wishing the welfare of the king, intent upon Dharma, artha and kama, thinking rightly and deeply, spoke these words on hearing Prahastha's words that were not good.
प्रहस्त: राजाचमहोदरश्चत्वंकुम्भकर्णश्चयथाऽर्थजातम् ।

ब्रवीतरामंप्रतितन्नशक्यंयथागतिस्स्वर्गमधर्मबुद्धेः ।।6.14.10।।


प्रहस्त: Prahastha, राजाच: and king, महोदरश्च: Mahodara also, त्वम् you, कुम्भकर्णश्च: and Kumbhakarna, रामंप्रति: against Rama, अर्थजातम् intend to accomplish, यथा: just as, ब्रवीत: said, तत् that, अधर्मबुद्देः one who is not righteous, स्वर्गम् heaven, गतिः obtained, यथा so also, नशक्यम् not possible.

"That which you intend to accomplish against Rama is not possible either for you or the king and even for Kumbhakarna and Mahodara, just as heaven is not obtained by the unrighteous people," said Vibheeshana.
वधस्तुरामस्यमयात्वयाचप्रहस्तसर्वैरपिराक्षसैर्वा ।

कथंभवेदर्थविशारदस्यमहार्णवंतर्तुमिवाप्लवस्य ।।6.14.11।।


हस्त: Prahastha, मया: by me, त्वयाच: and by you, सर्वैः all, राक्षसैर्वा: by Rakshasas also, अर्थविशारदस्य: one who is knowledgeable of everything, रामस्य: Rama's, वधः killing, अप्लवस्य: not swimming, महार्णवम् great ocean, तर्तुम् इव: like crossing, कथम् how, भवेत् will it be possible.

"Prahastha How can you or me or all Rakshasas kill Rama who is knowledgeable of everything, just as one who is not swimming can cross the great ocean."
धर्मप्रधानस्यमहारथस्यइक्ष्वाकुवंशप्रभवस्यराज्ञः ।

पुरोस्यदेवाश्चतथाविधस्यकृत्येषुशक्तस्यभवन्तिमूढा ।।6.14.12।।


धर्मप्रधानस्य: one to whom righteousness alone is foremost, महारथस्य: a great charioteer, इक्ष्वाकुवंशप्रभवस्य: glorious son of Ikshvaku dynasty, कृत्येषु: in action, शक्तस्य: very capable, तथाविधस्य: in such acts राज्ञः by the king, अस्य: its, पुरः earlier, देवाश्च: even gods, मूढा: bewildered, भवन्ति: by you at present.

"One to whom righteousness is foremost, who is capable of fighting with eleven thousand warriors as charioteer, (like Dasaratha) who is a glorious scion of Ikshvaku dynasty, who is highly capable in war, in front of whom even gods got bewildered earlier. What can be done by you?"
तीक्ष्णानतायत्तवकङ्कपत्रादुरासदाराघवविप्रमुक्ताः ।

भित्वाशरीरंप्रविशन्तिबाणाःप्रहस्ततेनैवविकत्थसेत्वम् ।।6.14.13।।


प्रहस्त: Prahastha, तीक्ष्णाः sharp, कङ्कपत्राः arrows fixed with feathers of kanka bird, दुरासदाः dangerous ones, राघवविप्रमुक्ताः released by Rama, बाणाः arrows, तवशरीरम् your body, भित्त्वा: tear, प्रविशन्ति: penetrate तावत् therefore, तेनैव: yourself, त्वम् your, विकत्थसे: boasting.

"Prahastha Sharp arrows of Rama fixed with feathers of Kanka birds are dangerous arrows. They will tear your body and penetrate. What are you boasting yourself?"
भित्त्वानतावत्प्रविशन्तिकायंप्राणान्तिकास्तेऽशनितुल्यवेगाः ।

शिताश्शराराघवविप्रमुक्ताःप्रहस्ततेनैवविकत्थसेत्वम् ।।6.14.14।।


प्रहस्त: Prahastha, राघवविप्रमुक्ताः released by Rama, प्राणान्तकाः those life threatening, अशनितुल्यवेगाः which have the speed of a meteor, शिताः sharp, शराः arrows, ते: your, कायम् body, भित्त्वा: tearing, नतावत् प्रविशन्ति: will not penetrate, तेनैव: yourself, त्वम् you, विकत्थसे: boasting.

"Prahastha Before the lifethreatening sharp arrows which have the speed of a meteor released by Rama penetrate and tear your body, why are you boasting yourself?"
नरावणोनातिबलस्त्रिशीर्षोनकुम्भकर्णोऽस्यसुतोनिकुम्भः ।

नचेन्द्रजिद्दाशरधिंप्रसोढुंत्वंवारणेशक्रसमंसमर्थ:।। 6.14.15।।


शक्रसमम् equal to Indra, दाशरथिम् son of Dasaratha, रणे: in war, सोढुम् to oppose, रावणः Ravana, नसमर्थः not capable, अतिबलः exceptionally strong, त्रिशीर्षः Trisirsha, न: not, कुम्भकर्णस्य: Kumbhakarna's, सुतः son, निकुम्भः Nikumbha, न: not, इन्द्रजित् Indrajith, न: not possible, त्वंवा: how can you.

"Either Ravana or exceptionally strong Trisirsha, or even Nikumbha son of Kumbahakarna, or Indrajith are not capable of opposing Rama who is equal to Indra in war. How can you?"
देवान्तकोवापिनरान्तकोवातथातिकायोऽतिरथोमहात्मा ।

आकम्पनश्चाद्रिसमानसारःस्थातुंनशक्तायुधिराघवस्य ।।6.14.16।।


देवान्तकोवापि: either Devanthaka, नरान्तकोवा: or Naranthaka, तथाअतिरधः in the same way Athiratha, महात्मा: great soul, अतिकायः Athikaya, अद्रिसमानसारः even if he is of mountain in size, अकम्पनश्च: like Akampana, राघवस्य: with Raghava, युधि: war, स्थातुम् to stand, नशक्ताः not possible.

"Either by Devanthaka or Naranthaka, in the same way the great soul Athiratha or Akampana, who is of mountainlike size, will not be able to stand against Raghava in war."
अयंचराजाव्यसनाभिभूतोमित्रैरमित्रप्रतिमैर्भवद्भि: ।

अन्वास्यतेराक्षसनाशनार्थेतीक्ष्णःप्रकृत्याह्यसीक्षयकारी ।।6.14.17।।


व्यसनाभिभूतः one who is a slave to vices, प्रकृत्या: by nature, तीक्ष्णः violent in action, असमीक्षयकारी: one who does without thinking, अयंराजा: this king,अमित्रप्रतिमैः like enemies, मित्रैः friends, भवद्भि: you also, राक्षसनाशनार्थे: for the destruction of Rakshasas, अन्वास्यते: attending. Vices The seven vices are harshness in speech, harshness in punishment, extravagance, drinking, weakness for women, hunting and gambling.

"This king who is by nature violent and acts without thinking about being an addict to seven vices, is destroying Rakshasas. You are also attending to him calling yourself as friends but like enemies."
अनन्तभोगेनसहस्रमूर्थ्नानागेनभीमेनमहाबलेव ।

बलात्परिक्षिप्तमिमंभवन्तोराजानमुत्क्षिप्यविमोचयन्तु ।।6.14.18।।


अनन्तभोगेन endowed with extraordinary energy, सहस्रमूर्द्ना with thousand heads, महाबलेन by extremely strong, भीमेन fearsome, नागेन snake, बलात् with strength,परिक्षिप्तम् is entwined with, इमंराजानम् this king, भवन्तः for the present time, उत्क्षिप्य: lift up, विमोचयन्तु relieve.

"This king is entwined by a fearsome and extremely strong thousand hooded snake endowed with extraordinary energy at present. Lift him up and relieve him."
यावद्धिकेशग्रहणातसुहृद्भि: समेत्यसर्वैःपरिपूर्णकामैः ।

निगृह्यराजापरिरक्षितव्योभूतैर्यथाभीमबलैर्गृहीतः ।।6.14.19।।


परिपूर्णकामैः whose wishes have been gratified, सर्वैः all, सुहृद्भि: friends also, समेत्य: joined together राजा: king, भीमबलैः of terrific strength, भूतै: by devils, गृहीतःयथा: just as, केशग्रहणात् यावत् even catching him by hair, निगृह्य: by force, परिरक्षितव्यःहि: will have to be protected.

"The king will have to be protected by all friends joined together whose wishes have been gratified even by catching him by his hair forcibly just as a man surrounded by a devil of terrific strength is pulled out by his hair."
सुवारिणाराघवसागरेणप्रच्छाद्यमानस्तरसाभवद्भि: ।

युक्तस्त्वयंतारयितुंसमेत्यकाकुत्स्थपातालमुखेपतन्सः ।।6.14.20।।


सुवारिणा: into the pit, राघवसागरेण: ocean called Raghava, तरसा: to be destroyed, प्रच्छाद्यमानः engulfed, काकुत्स्थ: Kakutstha's, पातालमुखे: the underworld, पतन् fall into, अयम् us, भवद्भि: at present, समेत्य: joined together, तारयितुम् will have to make him free, युक्तः proper for you.

"He is going to fall into the ocean called Rama to be destroyed, engulfed in the pit of the shape of Kakutstha Rama, the underworld. It is proper for all of us to join and make him free."
इदंपुरस्यास्यसराक्षसस्यराज्ञश्चपथ्यंससुहृज्जनस्य ।

सम्यग्घिवाक्यंस्वमतंब्रवीमिनरेन्द्रपुत्रायददामपत्नीम् ।।6.14.21।।


सराक्षसस्य: for the Rakshasas, अस्य: there, पुरस्य: capital, ससुहृज्जनस्य: for all of you the dear ones, राज्ञश्च: for the king, पथ्यम्: embodying, स्वमतम् my opinion, इदंवाक्यम् these words, सम्यक् good, ब्रवीमिहि: told, नरेन्द्रपुत्राय: king's son, पत्नीम् wife, ददाम: will give.

"I tell these good words embodying my opinion. Let the king's wife be given away for the good of the Rakshasas, their dear ones, for the capital and the king."
परस्यवीर्यंस्वबलंचबुध्वास्थानंक्षयंचैवतथैववृद्धिम् ।

तथास्वपक्षेप्यनुमृश्यबुध्वावदेत् क्षमंस्वामिहितंसमन्त्री ।।6.14.22।।


परस्य: foes', वीर्यम् valour, स्वबलंच: one's own strength, बुध्वा: ascertaining, तथा: so also, स्वपक्षे: one's own side, स्थानम् status, क्षयंचैव: reduction also, तथैव: one's own, वृद्धिम् growth, बुध्या: knowing, अनुमृश्य: considering, क्षमम् conducive, स्वामिहितम् to the king's welfare, वदेत् tells, सः he, मन्त्री: minister.

"One who is a minister should advice after ascertaining the strength of the foe and his own strength so also one's own growth (in strength) and fall in strength (of foe) and advice that which is conducive to the king's welfare."
।।इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेचतुर्दसस्सर्गः।।
This is the end of the fourteenth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
