[ Vibheeshana advises Ravana to give away Sita to Sri Rama before the Rakshasas are pierced by Rama. ]

niśācarēndrasyaniśamyavākyaṅsakumbhakarṇasyacagarjitāni .

vibhīṣaṇōrākṣasarājamukhyamuvācavākyaṅhitamarthayuktam ।।6.14.1।।


vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, niśācarēndrasya: the Lord of Rakshasas, vākyam statement, kumbhakarṇasya: Kumbhakarna's, garjitāni: roaring, niśamya: looking at, hitam good, arthayuktam meaningful, vākyam statement, rākṣasarājamukhyam king of Rakshasas, uvāca: said.

On hearing the statement of the Lord of Rakshasas and roaring of Kumbhakarna, looking at Ravana the king of Rakshasas, Vibheeshana said these good words appropriate of a noble person.
ntarabhōgarāśiścintāviṣassusmitatīkṣṇadaṅṣṭraḥ .

pañcāṅgulīpañcaśirō.tikāyassītāmahāhistavakēnarājan ।।6.14.2।।


rājan O king, bāhvantarabhōgarāśiḥ who has the hood at her bosom, cintāviṣaḥ poison of grief, susmitatīkṣṇadaṅṣṭraḥ has sharp fangs behind her gentle smile, pañcāṅgulīpañcaśirō.tikāyaḥ has her five fingers of the palm like five heads of snake, sītāmahāhiḥ snake called Sita, kēna: why, tavavṛtaḥ you desired.

"O king! Why have you desired Sita who has snake hood at her bosom, has poison of grief, has sharp fangs behind her gentle smile and has five fingers of her palm as five heads of snake called Sita?"
yāvannalaṅkāṅsamabhidravantivalīmukhāḥparvatakūṭamātrāḥ .

daṣṭrāyudhāścaivanakhāyudhāścapradīyatāṅdāśarathāyamaithilī ।।6.14.3।।


parvatakūṭamātrāḥ of mountain like form, daṅṣṭrāyudhāḥ who have teeth as weapons, nakhāyudhāśca: and claws as weapons, valīmukhāḥ monkeys, yāvat all of them, laṅkām to Lanka, nasamabhidravanti: before reaching, dāśarathāya: to Rama, maithilī: Mythili, pradīyatām give away.

"Before the monkeys of mountain like form whose teeth and claws are like weapons reach Lanka, give away Mythili to Rama."
yāvannagṛhṇantiśirāṅsibāṇārāmēritārākṣasapuṅgavānām .

vajrōpamāvāyusamānavēgāḥpradīyatāṅdāśarathāyamaithilī ।।6.14.4।।


vajrōsamāḥ equal to thunderbolt, vāyusamānavēgāḥ speed of wind, rāmēritāḥ released by Rama, bāṇāḥ arrows, rākṣasapuṅgavānām leaders of Rakshasas, śirāṅsi: heads, yāvat l, nagṛhṇanti: take away, maithilī: Mythili, dāśarathāya: to Rama son of Dasaratha, pradīyatām give away.

"Give away Mythili to Rama before he releases arrows like that of thunder bolt with the speed of wind and take away the heads of the leader."
nakumbhakarṇēndrajitaucarājaṅstathāmahāpārśvamahōdarauvā .

nikumbhakumbhaucatathā.tikāyaḥsthātuṅnaśaktāyudhirāghavasya ।।6.14.5।।


rājan O king, kumbhakarṇēndrajitau: either Kumbhakarna or Indrajith, tathā: so also, mahāpārśvamahōdarauvā: Mahaparsva, Mahodara or, nikumbhakumbhau: Nikumbha or Kumbha, tathā: so also, atikāyaḥ Athikaya, yudhi: in combat, rāghavasya: at Raghava, sthātum to face, śaktā: na: not possible.

"O King! It will not be possible for either Kumbhakarna or Indrajith so also for Mahaparsva not even Mahodara, so also for Nikumbha or Kumbha and Athikaya to face Rama in combat."
jīvaṅsturāmasyanamōkṣyasētvaṅguptassavitrāpyathavāmarudbhi: .

navāsavasyāṅkagatōnamṛtyōrnabhōnapātāḷamanupraviṣṭaḥ ।।6.14.6।।


tvam you, savitrā: Sun, athavā: or else, marudbhi: even wind god, guptaḥ guarded, jīvan with life, rāmasya: Rama's arrows, namōkṣyasē: will not leave, vāsavasya: Indra's, aṅkagataḥ sit on lap of, na not, mṛtyōḥ death god, na: not, nabhaḥ heaven, pātālam underworld (under water), anupraviṣṭaḥ enter also, na: not.

"Rama's arrows will not leave you with life even if you are guarded by Sun or wind god, not even if you sit on the lap of Indra or death god or even if you enter the sky or under water."
niśamyavākyaṅtuvibhīṣaṇasyatataḥprahastōvacanaṅbabhāṣē .

nanōbhayaṅvidmanadaivatēbhyōnadānavēbhyō.pyathavākutaścit ।।6.14.7।।


vibhīṣaṇasya: Vibheeshana's, vākyam words, niśamya: having heard tataḥ thereafter, prahāstaḥ Prahastha, vacanam words, babhāṣē: told by, naḥ no, bhayam fear, navidma: do not know, daivatēbhyaḥ of gods, naathavā: not even, dānavēbhyaḥ Rakshasas, kutaścit anyone, na: no.

After hearing the words said by Vibheeshana, Prahastha spoke these words, we do not know the fear of gods or Rakshasas or anyone.
nayakṣagandharvamahōragēbhyōbhayaṅnasaṅkhyēpatagōragēbhyaḥ .

kathaṅnurāmādbhavitābhayaṅnōnarēndraputrātsamarēkadācit ।।6.14.8।।


yakṣagandharvamahōragēbhyaḥ Yakshas, Gandharvas, Nagas, saṅkhyē: in battle, bhayam fear, na: no, patagōragēbhyaḥ birds and reptiles, na: no, narēndraputrāt of the king's sons, rāmāt from Rama, naḥ no, kadācit even a little, samarē: in war, bhayam fear, katham what, bhavitā: will be?

"We are not afraid of Yakshas, Gandharvas, or even Nagas. We have no fear of birds or reptiles. What fear can we have of the king's son, Rama?"
prahastavākyaṅtvahitaṅniśamyavibhīṣaṇōrājahitānukāṅkṣī .

tatōmahārthaṅvacanaṅbabhāṣēdharmārthakāmēṣuniviṣṭabuddhi:।। 6.14.9।।


tataḥ then, rājahitānukāṅkṣī: desiring king's welfare, dharmārthakāmēṣu: dharma (righteousness) artha (material prosperity) and Kama (sensual desires), niviṣṭabuddhi: thinking deeply and rightly, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, ahitam that which is not good, prahastavākyam Prahastha's word, niśamya: hearing, mahārtham well meaning, vacanam words, babhāṣē: spoke.

Then Vibheeshana, wishing the welfare of the king, intent upon Dharma, artha and kama, thinking rightly and deeply, spoke these words on hearing Prahastha's words that were not good.
prahasta: rājācamahōdaraścatvaṅkumbhakarṇaścayathā.rthajātam .

bravītarāmaṅpratitannaśakyaṅyathāgatissvargamadharmabuddhēḥ ।।6.14.10।।


prahasta: Prahastha, rājāca: and king, mahōdaraśca: Mahodara also, tvam you, kumbhakarṇaśca: and Kumbhakarna, rāmaṅprati: against Rama, arthajātam intend to accomplish, yathā: just as, bravīta: said, tat that, adharmabuddēḥ one who is not righteous, svargam heaven, gatiḥ obtained, yathā so also, naśakyam not possible.

"That which you intend to accomplish against Rama is not possible either for you or the king and even for Kumbhakarna and Mahodara, just as heaven is not obtained by the unrighteous people," said Vibheeshana.
vadhasturāmasyamayātvayācaprahastasarvairapirākṣasairvā .

kathaṅbhavēdarthaviśāradasyamahārṇavaṅtartumivāplavasya ।।6.14.11।।


hasta: Prahastha, mayā: by me, tvayāca: and by you, sarvaiḥ all, rākṣasairvā: by Rakshasas also, arthaviśāradasya: one who is knowledgeable of everything, rāmasya: Rama's, vadhaḥ killing, aplavasya: not swimming, mahārṇavam great ocean, tartum iva: like crossing, katham how, bhavēt will it be possible.

"Prahastha! How can you or me or all Rakshasas kill Rama who is knowledgeable of everything, just as one who is not swimming can cross the great ocean."
dharmapradhānasyamahārathasyaikṣvākuvaṅśaprabhavasyarājñaḥ .

purōsyadēvāścatathāvidhasyakṛtyēṣuśaktasyabhavantimūḍhā ।।6.14.12।।


dharmapradhānasya: one to whom righteousness alone is foremost, mahārathasya: a great charioteer, ikṣvākuvaṅśaprabhavasya: glorious son of Ikshvaku dynasty, kṛtyēṣu: in action, śaktasya: very capable, tathāvidhasya: in such acts rājñaḥ by the king, asya: its, puraḥ earlier, dēvāśca: even gods, mūḍhā: bewildered, bhavanti: by you at present.

"One to whom righteousness is foremost, who is capable of fighting with eleven thousand warriors as charioteer, (like Dasaratha) who is a glorious scion of Ikshvaku dynasty, who is highly capable in war, in front of whom even gods got bewildered earlier. What can be done by you?"
tīkṣṇānatāyattavakaṅkapatrādurāsadārāghavavipramuktāḥ .

bhitvāśarīraṅpraviśantibāṇāḥprahastatēnaivavikatthasētvam ।।6.14.13।।


prahasta: Prahastha, tīkṣṇāḥ sharp, kaṅkapatrāḥ arrows fixed with feathers of kanka bird, durāsadāḥ dangerous ones, rāghavavipramuktāḥ released by Rama, bāṇāḥ arrows, tavaśarīram your body, bhittvā: tear, praviśanti: penetrate tāvat therefore, tēnaiva: yourself, tvam your, vikatthasē: boasting.

"Prahastha! Sharp arrows of Rama fixed with feathers of Kanka birds are dangerous arrows. They will tear your body and penetrate. What are you boasting yourself?"
bhittvānatāvatpraviśantikāyaṅprāṇāntikāstē.śanitulyavēgāḥ .

śitāśśarārāghavavipramuktāḥprahastatēnaivavikatthasētvam ।।6.14.14।।


prahasta: Prahastha, rāghavavipramuktāḥ released by Rama, prāṇāntakāḥ those life threatening, aśanitulyavēgāḥ which have the speed of a meteor, śitāḥ sharp, śarāḥ arrows, tē: your, kāyam body, bhittvā: tearing, natāvat praviśanti: will not penetrate, tēnaiva: yourself, tvam you, vikatthasē: boasting.

"Prahastha! Before the life-threatening sharp arrows which have the speed of a meteor released by Rama penetrate and tear your body, why are you boasting yourself?"
narāvaṇōnātibalastriśīrṣōnakumbhakarṇō.syasutōnikumbhaḥ .

nacēndrajiddāśaradhiṅprasōḍhuṅtvaṅvāraṇēśakrasamaṅsamartha:।। 6.14.15।।


śakrasamam equal to Indra, dāśarathim son of Dasaratha, raṇē: in war, sōḍhum to oppose, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, nasamarthaḥ not capable, atibalaḥ exceptionally strong, triśīrṣaḥ Trisirsha, na: not, kumbhakarṇasya: Kumbhakarna's, sutaḥ son, nikumbhaḥ Nikumbha, na: not, indrajit Indrajith, na: not possible, tvaṅvā: how can you.

"Either Ravana or exceptionally strong Trisirsha, or even Nikumbha son of Kumbahakarna, or Indrajith are not capable of opposing Rama who is equal to Indra in war. How can you?"
dēvāntakōvāpinarāntakōvātathātikāyō.tirathōmahātmā .

ākampanaścādrisamānasāraḥsthātuṅnaśaktāyudhirāghavasya ।।6.14.16।।


dēvāntakōvāpi: either Devanthaka, narāntakōvā: or Naranthaka, tathāatiradhaḥ in the same way Athiratha, mahātmā: great soul, atikāyaḥ Athikaya, adrisamānasāraḥ even if he is of mountain in size, akampanaśca: like Akampana, rāghavasya: with Raghava, yudhi: war, sthātum to stand, naśaktāḥ not possible.

"Either by Devanthaka or Naranthaka, in the same way the great soul Athiratha or Akampana, who is of mountainlike size, will not be able to stand against Raghava in war."
ayaṅcarājāvyasanābhibhūtōmitrairamitrapratimairbhavadbhi: .

anvāsyatērākṣasanāśanārthētīkṣṇaḥprakṛtyāhyasīkṣayakārī ।।6.14.17।।


vyasanābhibhūtaḥ one who is a slave to vices*, prakṛtyā: by nature, tīkṣṇaḥ violent in action, asamīkṣayakārī: one who does without thinking, ayaṅrājā: this king,amitrapratimaiḥ like enemies, mitraiḥ friends, bhavadbhi: you also, rākṣasanāśanārthē: for the destruction of Rakshasas, anvāsyatē: attending. *Vices- The seven vices are harshness in speech, harshness in punishment, extravagance, drinking, weakness for women, hunting and gambling.

"This king who is by nature violent and acts without thinking about being an addict to seven vices, is destroying Rakshasas. You are also attending to him calling yourself as friends but like enemies."
anantabhōgēnasahasramūrthnānāgēnabhīmēnamahābalēva .

balātparikṣiptamimaṅbhavantōrājānamutkṣipyavimōcayantu ।।6.14.18।।


anantabhōgēna endowed with extraordinary energy, sahasramūrdnā with thousand heads, mahābalēna by extremely strong, bhīmēna fearsome, nāgēna snake, balāt with strength,parikṣiptam is entwined with, imaṅrājānam this king, bhavantaḥ for the present time, utkṣipya: lift up, vimōcayantu relieve.

"This king is entwined by a fearsome and extremely strong thousand hooded snake endowed with extraordinary energy at present. Lift him up and relieve him."
yāvaddhikēśagrahaṇātasuhṛdbhi: samētyasarvaiḥparipūrṇakāmaiḥ .

nigṛhyarājāparirakṣitavyōbhūtairyathābhīmabalairgṛhītaḥ ।।6.14.19।।


paripūrṇakāmaiḥ whose wishes have been gratified, sarvaiḥ all, suhṛdbhi: friends also, samētya: joined together rājā: king, bhīmabalaiḥ of terrific strength, bhūtai: by devils, gṛhītaḥyathā: just as, kēśagrahaṇāt yāvat even catching him by hair, nigṛhya: by force, parirakṣitavyaḥhi: will have to be protected.

"The king will have to be protected by all friends joined together whose wishes have been gratified even by catching him by his hair forcibly just as a man surrounded by a devil of terrific strength is pulled out by his hair."
suvāriṇārāghavasāgarēṇapracchādyamānastarasābhavadbhi: .

yuktastvayaṅtārayituṅsamētyakākutsthapātālamukhēpatansaḥ ।।6.14.20।।


suvāriṇā: into the pit, rāghavasāgarēṇa: ocean called Raghava, tarasā: to be destroyed, pracchādyamānaḥ engulfed, kākutstha: Kakutstha's, pātālamukhē: the underworld, patan fall into, ayam us, bhavadbhi: at present, samētya: joined together, tārayitum will have to make him free, yuktaḥ proper for you.

"He is going to fall into the ocean called Rama to be destroyed, engulfed in the pit of the shape of Kakutstha Rama, the underworld. It is proper for all of us to join and make him free."
idaṅpurasyāsyasarākṣasasyarājñaścapathyaṅsasuhṛjjanasya .

samyagghivākyaṅsvamataṅbravīminarēndraputrāyadadāmapatnīm ।।6.14.21।।


sarākṣasasya: for the Rakshasas, asya: there, purasya: capital, sasuhṛjjanasya: for all of you the dear ones, rājñaśca: for the king, pathyam: embodying, svamatam my opinion, idaṅvākyam these words, samyak good, bravīmihi: told, narēndraputrāya: king's son, patnīm wife, dadāma: will give.

"I tell these good words embodying my opinion. Let the king's wife be given away for the good of the Rakshasas, their dear ones, for the capital and the king."
parasyavīryaṅsvabalaṅcabudhvāsthānaṅkṣayaṅcaivatathaivavṛddhim .

tathāsvapakṣēpyanumṛśyabudhvāvadēt kṣamaṅsvāmihitaṅsamantrī ।।6.14.22।।


parasya: foes', vīryam valour, svabalaṅca: one's own strength, budhvā: ascertaining, tathā: so also, svapakṣē: one's own side, sthānam status, kṣayaṅcaiva: reduction also, tathaiva: one's own, vṛddhim growth, budhyā: knowing, anumṛśya: considering, kṣamam conducive, svāmihitam to the king's welfare, vadēt tells, saḥ he, mantrī: minister.

"One who is a minister should advice after ascertaining the strength of the foe and his own strength so also one's own growth (in strength) and fall in strength (of foe) and advice that which is conducive to the king's welfare."
।।ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēcaturdasassargaḥ।।
