[ Descending from the sky Vibheeshana seeks refuge with Sri Rama. On enquiry Vibheeshana tells everything about Ravana to Sri Rama. ]

rāghavēṇābhayēdattēsannatōrāvaṇānujaḥ .

vibhīṣaṇōmahāprājñōbhūmiṅsamavalōkayan ।।6.19.1।।


rāghavēṇa: by Raghava, abhayē: promised security, dattē: given, rāvāṇānujaḥ to Ravana's brother, mahāprājñaḥ wise, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, sannataḥ prepared to, bhūmim ground, samavalōkayan looked around.

When wise Vibheeshana, the brother of Ravana was assured of security by Raghava, he looked around the ground and prepared (to descend).
khātpapātāvanīṅhṛṣṭōbhaktēranucaraissaha .

satarāmasyaparamātmānipapātavibhīṣaṇaḥ ।।6.19.2।।


dharmātmā: righteous self, saḥ that, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, hṛṣṭaḥ happily, khāt from the sky, bhaktēḥ devotees, sahā: accompanied by, avanim on to the land, papātāta: descended, rāmasya: towards Rama, nipapāta: fell on the feet.

Righteous Vibheeshana descended from the sky and fell at the feet of Rama accompanied by his devotees happily (considering it to be inappropriate to come with foot down he came straight down with his body).
pādayōśśaraṇānvēṣīcaturbhissaharākṣasaiḥ .

abravīccatadāvākyaṅrāmaṅprativibhīṣaṇaḥ ।।6.19.3।।

dharmayuktaṅcayuktaṅcasāmprataṅsampraharṣaṇam .


atha: thereafter, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, caturbhiḥ and the four, rākṣasaiḥsaha: along with Rakshasas, pādayōḥ by foot, śaraṇānvēṣī: who seeks shelter, nipapāta: prostrated falling down, rāmaṅprati: in front of Rama, dharmayuktam duly expressing his duty, yuktaṅca: and appropriate, sāmpratam placing confidence in, sampraharṣaṇam showing extreme joy, vākyam these words, abravīcca: spoken.

Thereafter Vibheeshana and the four Rakshasas who sought shelter prostrated lying at the feet of Rama expressing their duty, duly and placing confidence in Rama who spoke these words showing extreme joy.
anujōrāvaṇasyāhaṅtēnacāpyavamānitaḥ .

bhavantaṅsarvabhūtānāṅśaraṇyaṅśaraṇāgataḥ ।।6.19.4।।


aham I am, rāvaṇasya: Ravana's, anujaḥ younger brother, tēna: having been, avamānitaśca: put to shame, sarvabhūtānām all beings, śaraṇyam protector, bhavantam you are, śaraṇāgataḥ came to seek protection.

"I am Ravana's younger brother. Having been put to shame I came to seek protection from you who are the protector of all beings " (Vibheeshana said to Rama)."
parityaktāmayālaṅkamitrāṇicadhanānica .

bhavadgataṅhimērājyaṅjīvitaṅcasukhānica ।।6.19.5।।


mayā: my, laṅkā: Lanka, parityaktā: leaving, mitrāṇica: and friends, dhanānica: even wealth, mē: my, rājyam kingdom, bhavadgataṅhi: at your disposal, jīvitam life, sukhānica: for happiness.

"Leaving Lanka, my friends and my wealth I came to you. Now my life, kingdom and welfare are at your disposal."
tathyatadvacanaṅśrutvārāmōvacanamabravīt ।।6.19.6।।

vacasāsāntvayitvainaṅlōcanābhyāṅpibanniva .

ākhyāhimamatattvēnarākṣasānāṅbalābalam ।।6.19.7।।


rāmaḥ Rama, tasya: that, tat vacanam those words, śrutvā: on hearing, vacasā: word, ēnam that way, sāntvayitvā: soothing him, lōcanābhyām with both eyes, pibanniva: as if drinking, vacanam words, abravīt spoken, rākṣasānām Rakshasas, balābalam strength as well as weakness, mama: to me, tattvēna: truly, ākhyāhi: related.

"On hearing those words (of Vibheeshana) that were soothing to him as if he drank (Vibheeshana's love) with his both eyes, Rama asked Vibheeshana to truly relate the strength as well as weakness of the Rakshasas."
ēvamuktaṅtadārakṣōrāmēṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā .

rāvaṇasyabalaṅsarvamākhyātumupacakramē ।।6.19.8।।


tadā: then, akliṣṭakirmaṇā: of unwearied action, rāmēṇa: by Rama, ēvam in that way, uktam having said, rakṣaḥ Rakshasa (Vibheeshana), rāvaṇasya: Ravana's, sarvam all, balam strength, ākhyātum to speak out, upacakramē: proceeded.

Then the Rakshasa (Vibheeshana) having heard that Rama of unwearied action would save him proceeded to speak out about the strength of Ravana.
avadhyassarvabhūtānāṅgandharvōragarakṣasām .

rājaputradaśagrīvōvaradānātsvayaṅbhuvaḥ ।।6.19.9।।


rājaputra: prince, svayaṅbhuvaḥ self-born Brahma, varadānāt: by virtue of a boon, daśagrīvaḥ ten-headed Ravana, gandharvōrarakṣasām by Gandharvas, serpents or Rakshasas, sarvabhūtānām by all beings, avadhyaḥ not possible to kill.

"Oh! Prince, by virtue of a boon granted by Brahma, the self-born to the ten-headed Ravana, he cannot be killed by Gandharvas, Rakshasas and by all beings."
rāvaṇānantarōbhrātāmamajyēṣṭhaścavīryavān .

kumbhakarṇōmahātējāśśakrapratibalōyudhi ।।6.19.10।।


rāvaṇānantaraḥ younger to Ravana, bhrātā: brother, mama: my, jyēṣṭhaśca: elder's, vīryavān highly valiant, mahātējā: of great prowess, kumbakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, yudhi: in war, śakrapratibalaḥ equal to Indra in strength.

"My elder brother, the one who is younger to Ravana is a highly valiant one endowed with great prowess. He is Kumbhakarna and equal to Indra in war."
rāmasēnāpatistasyaprahāstōyadivāśrutaḥ .

kailāsēyēnasaṅgrāmēmaṇibhadraḥparājitaḥ ।।6.19.11।।


rāma: Rama, yēna: on which account, kailāsē: in Kailasa, saṅgrāmē: in combat, maṇibhadraḥ Manibhadra, parājitaḥ defeated, tasyasēnāpatiḥ his army chief, prahastaḥ Prahastha, tē: you, śrutaḥyadi: might have heard.

"Rama! You might have heard of Prahastha who the commander in chief of his (Ravana's) army is by whom Manibhadra (Kubera's Commander of Army) was defeated in a comb at in Kailas (the abode of Siva)."
baddhagōdhāṅguḷitraścaavadhyakavacōyudhi .

dhanurādāyayastiṣṭannadṛśyōbhavatīndrajit ।।6.19.12।।


yaḥ he who, indrajit Indrajith, buddhagōdhāṅguḷitraśca: possessed with skin of Iguana on his hands, avadhyakavacaḥ shield which cannot be pierced, dhanuḥ bow, ādāya: wielding, yudhi: in combat, tiṣṭhan remains, adṛśyaḥ unseen, bhavati: will be.

"He (Ravana's eldest son) who is possessed of Iguana skin on his hands (to protect), and with a shield that cannot be pierced and who remains unseen in comb at wielding a bow is Indrajith."
saṅgrāmasamayavyūhētarpayitvāhutāśanam .

antardhānagataśśatrūnindrajid hantirāghava:।। 6.19.13।।


rāghava: Raghava, śatrūn at enemies, indrajit Indrajith, hutāśanam god of fire, tarpayitvā: by satisfying, antardhānagataḥ goes unseen, sumayavyūhē: when caught by network of foes, saṅgrāmasamayē: at the time of war, hanti: strikes.

"Raghava! Indrajith strikes when caught by a network of foes in war by becoming invisible because of satisfying fire god."
mahōdaramahāpārśvaurākṣasaścāpyakampanaḥ .

anīkasthāstutasyaitēlōkapālasamāyudhi ।।6.19.14।।


mahōdaramahāpārśvau: Mahodara and Mahaparsva, akampanaḥ Akampana, rākṣasaśca: at Rakshasas, yudhi: in war, lōkapālasamāḥ like the guardians of the world, ētē: all these are, tasya: their, anīkasdha: commanders in the army.

"Mahodara, Mahaparsva, Akampana are Rakshasas who are like the guards of the world. They are the commanders of his (Ravana's) army."
daśakōṭisahasrāṇirakṣasāṅkāmarūpiṇām .

māṅsaśōṇitabhakṣyāṇāṅlaṅkāpuranivāsinām ।।6.19.15।।


kāmarūpiṇām who change form at their will, māṅsaśōṇitabhakṣyāṇām who eat flesh and blood, laṅkāpuranivāsinām those residing in the city of Lanka, rakṣasām Rakshasas, sahasrāṇi: thousands.

"Thousands of Rakshasas inhabit the city of Lanka living on flesh and blood and changing their form at will."
sataistusahitōrājālōkapālānayōdhayat .

sahadēvaistutēbhagnārāvaṇēnamahātmanā ।।6.19.16।।


saḥ that, rājā king, taiḥ them (Rakshasas), sahitaḥ accompanied by, lōkapālan rulers of the world, ayōdhay unassailable, dēvaiḥsahā: along with celestial beings, mahātmanā: great soul, rāvaṇē: by Ravana, bhagnāḥ shattered.

"The unassailable rulers of the world and even celestial beings have been shattered by Ravana accompanied by the Rakshasas."
vibhīṣaṇavaca: śrutvārāmōdṛḍhaparākramaḥ .

anvīkṣyamanasāsarvamidaṅvacanamabravīt ।।6.19.17।।


rāmaḥ Rama, dṛḍhaparākramaḥ one of mighty prowess, vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ Vibheeshana's words, śrutvā: hearing, sarvam everything, manasā: in mind, anvīkṣya: examining, idam these, vacanam words, abravīt spoke.

Rama of mighty prowess having heard everything from Vibheeshana, examining in his mind, spoke.
yānikarmāpadānānirāvaṇasyavibhīṣaṇa: .

akhyātānicatattvēnahyavagacchāmitānyaham ।।6.19.18।।


vibhīṣaṇa: Vibheeshana, rāvaṇasya: Ravana's, yāni: those, karmāpadānāni: actions followed, akhyātāni: that which has been spoken, tāni: those, tattvēna: in essence, aham avagacchāmi: is known to me, hi: also.

"Vibheeshana! Those actions resorted to by Ravana which have been spoken by you in essence are known to me."
ahaṅhatvādaśagrīvaṅsaprahastaṅsabāndhavam .

rājānaṅtvāṅkariṣyāmisatyamētadbravīmitē ।।6.19.19।।


aham I, saprahastam with Prahastha, sabāndhavaḥ with relatives, daśagrīvam ten-headed Ravana, hatvā: killing, tvām you, rājānam crown as the king, kariṣyāmi: will make you, mē: my, ētat this, satyam true, bravīmi: telling.

"By Killing the ten-headed Ravana along with Prahastha and relatives I will make you the king. I am telling you, this is true."
rasātalaṅvāpraviśētpātāḷaṅvāpirāvaṇaḥ .

pitāmahāsakāśaṅvānamējīvanvimōkṣyatē ।।6.19.20।।


rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, rasātalam hell, pātālaṅvāpi: even under the ground, praviśēt if enters, pitāmahāsakāśaṅvā: or the abode of Brahma, jīvan with life, mē: I, navimōkṣyatē: will not let.

"Even if Ravana enters the hell or underground or the abode of Brahma the creator, I will not let him be alive."
ahatvārāvaṇaṅsaṅ khyēsaputrajanabāndhavam .

ayōdhyāṅnapravēkṣyāmitribhistairbhrātṛbhiśśapē ।।6.19.21।।


saputrajanabāndavam accompanied with sons and relatives and people, rāvaṇam Ravana, saṅ khyē: in war, ahatvā: without putting an end to, ayōdhyām into Ayodhya, napravēkṣyāmi: will not enter, tai: those, tribhiḥ three, bhrātṛbhiḥ brothers, śapē vow.

"I vow upon my three brothers that I will not enter Ayodhya without putting an end to Ravana along with his people, sons and relatives."
śrutvātuvacanaṅtasyarāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ .

śirasāvandyadharmātmāvaktumēvōpacakramē ।।6.19.22।।


dharmātmā: righteous man, akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ untiring in action, tasyarāmasya: at Rama's, vacanam words, śrutvā: after having heard, śirasā: with head, avandya: bent down, vaktumēva: to speak, upacakramē: started.

After having heard the words of Rama of untiring in action, Vibheeshana of righteous nature, started to speak with his head bent down (in reverence).
rākṣasānāṅvadhēsāhyaṅlaṅkāyāścapradharṣaṇē .

kariṣyāmiyathāprāṇaṅpravēkṣyāmicavāhinīm ।।6.19.23।।


laṅkāyāḥ Lanka's, pradharṣaṇē: for storming, rākṣasānām for Rakshasas, vathē: for killing, sāhyam help, kariṣyāmi: will render, yathāprāṇam with all my strength, vāhinīm army, pravēkṣyāmica: to enter.

"I will render assistance with all my strength for storming Lanka, for killing the Rakshasas and for the army to enter."
itibruvāṇāṅrāmastupariṣvajyavibhīṣaṇam .

abravīllakṣmaṇaṅprītassamudrājjalamānaya ।।6.19.24।।


rāmastu: even Rama also, prīta: pleased, iti: thus, bruvāṇam spoken, vibhīṣaṇam by Vibheeshana, pariṣvajya: embracing, lakṣmaṇam to Lakshmana, abravīt said, samudrāt from the ocean, jalam water, ānaya: get water.

When Vibheeshana had spoken in that manner, Rama was pleased and embraced him. He called for Lakshmana to get water from the ocean (for consecration).
tēnacēmaṅmahāprājñamabhiṣiñcavibhīṣaṇam .

rājānaṅrakṣasāṅkṣipraṅprasannēmayimānada ।।6.19.25।।


mānada: respectable one, mayi: I am, prasannē: pleased with, mahāprājñam highly intelligent, imam this, vibhīṣaṇam Vibheeshana, rakṣasām Rakshasa, rājānam crowned king, kṣīpram at once, tēna: so, abhiṣiñca: will coronate.

"I am pleased with this highly intelligent Vibheeshana, a respectable one. I will coronate him at once as king of Rakshasas."
ēvamuktastusaumitrirabhyaṣiñcadvibhīṣaṇam .

madhyēvānaramukhyānāṅrājānaṅrāmaśāsanāt ।।6.19.26।।


ēvam in that way, uktāḥ having spoken, saumitri: Saumithri, vānamukhyānām chiefs of army of Vanaras, madhyē: midst, rāmaśāsanāt by the command of Rama, vibhīṣaṇam Vibheeshana, rājānam as king, abhyaṣiñcat coronated.

(Rama) having spoken that way, Saumithri crowned Vibheeshana as crowned king on the command of Rama amid Vanara army chiefs.
taṅprasādaṅturāmasyadṛṣṭavāsadyaḥplavaṅgamāḥ .

pracukruśurmahātmānaṅsādhusādhviticābruvan ।।6.19.27।।


plavaṅgamāḥ the leaping animals (Vanaras), rāmasya: Rama's, tam: that, sadyaḥ that, prasādam grace, dṛṣṭavā: seeing, pracukruśuḥ moving about in joy, mahātmānam great self, sādhusādhuiti: good, abruvan ca: hailed saying.

At that instant the Vanaras jumped, moving about exhibiting their joy on witnessing great Rama's grace saying "Good, good."
athābravīd hanūmāṅścasugrīvaścavibhīṣaṇam .

kathaṅsāgaramakṣōbhyaṅtarāmavaruṇālayam ।।6.19.28।।

sainyaiḥparivṛtāssarvēvānarāṇāṅmahaujasām .


hanūmāṅśca: Hanuman also, vibhīṣaṇam to Vibheeshana, abravīt said, sugrīvaśca: to Sugriva, sarvē: entire lot of, mahaujasām highly energetic, vānarāṇām with Vanaras, sainyaiḥ army, parivṛtāḥ surrounded, akṣōbhyam imperturbable, varuṇālayam abode of Varuna (ocean), sāgaram ocean, katham how, tarāma: to cross.

Hanuman and Sugriva enquired of Vibheeshana as to how to cross this ocean that is imperturbable along with the entire lot of energetic Vanara army.
upāyaṅnādhigacchāmōyathānadanadīpatim .

tarāmatarasāsarvēsasainyāvaruṇālayam ।।6.19.29।।


nadanadīpatim Lord of rivers and streams, god of water, varuṇālayam abode of Varuna, sasainyāḥ with the army, sarvē: entire, tarasā: to cross, yathā: this way, tarāma: to cross, upāyaiḥ strategy, abhigaccāma: shall we approach.

"What strategy should we adopt to cross this abode of Varuna, the Lord of rivers and streams with the entire army of Vanaras?" (Hanuman and Sugriva asked Vibheeshana).
ēvamuktastudharmajñaḥpratyuvācavibhīṣaṇaḥ .

samudraṅrāghavōrājāśaraṇaṅgantumarhati ।।6.19.30।।


ēvam in that way, uktaḥ having said, dharmātmā: righteous self, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, pratyuvāca: replied, rājā: O King, rāghavaḥ Raghava, samudram ocean, śaraṇam refuge, gantum will go, arhati: we ought to.

(Hanuman) having asked so, righteous Vibheeshana said, "O king Raghava! We ought to go and seek refuge from the god of the ocean."
khānitassagarēṇāyamapramēyōmahōdadhiḥ .

kartumarhatirāmasyajñātē: kāryaṅmahāmatiḥ ।।6.19.31।।


āpramēyaḥ unbounded, ayama: this, mahōdadhiḥ great ocean, sagarēṇa: by Sagara, khanitaḥ excavated, mahāmatiḥ king of the great ocean, jñāta: race, rāmasya: Rama's, kāryam task, kartum to do, arhati: ought to.

"This immeasurable great ocean was excavated by Sagara (A King of the Ikshvaku dynasty). The great ocean needs to do the task of Rama who is of the same race."
ēvaṅvibhīṣaṇēnōktōrākṣasēnavipaścitā .

ajagāmāthasugrīvōyatrarāmassalakṣmaṇaḥ ।।6.19.32।।


atha: and then, vipaścitā: learned, rākṣasēnā: by rakshasa, vibhīṣaṇēna: by Vibheeshana, ēvam in that manner, uktaḥ having spoken, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, salakṣmaṇēna: accompanied by Lakshmana, rāmaḥ Rama, yatra: where, ājagāma: reached.

Vibheeshana having spoken in that manner, Sugriva accompanied by Lakshmana reached near Rama.
tataścākhyātumārēbhēvibhīṣaṇavacaśśubham .

sugrīvōvipulagrīvōssāgarasyōpavēśanam ।।6.19.33।।


tataḥ thereafter, vipulagrīvaḥ broad-necked, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ Vibheeshana's words of advice, sāgarasya: about Sagara, upavēśanam sitting down, ākhyātum to make him know ārēbhē: started.

Thereafter broad-necked Sugriva started to communicate to Rama the advice of Vibheeshana about Sagara.
prakṛtyādharmaśīlasyarāghavasyāpyarōcata ।।6.19.34।।

salakṣmaṇaṅmahātējāssugrīvaṅcaharīśvaram .

satkriyārthaṅkriyādakṣaṅsmitapūrvamuvācaha ।।6.29.35।।


prakṛtyā: by nature, dharmaśīlasya: one who is of righteous character, asyarāmasyāpi: to Rama also, rōcita: pleasing, mahātējāḥ brilliant, saḥ he, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, kriyādakṣam skilful at action, harīśvaram king of Vanaras, sugrīvaṅca: and Sugriva also, satkriyārtham about the task to be undertaken, smitapūrvam smilingly, uvāca: said.

To Rama who was by nature righteous the advice (of Vibheeshana) was pleasing. To the brilliant Lakshmana of skilful action, to Sugriva the king of monkeys, Rama said smilingly.
vibhīṣaṇasyamantrō.yaṅmamalakṣmaṇa rōcatē .

sugrīvaḥpaṇḍitōnityaṅbhavānmantravicakṣaṇaḥ ।।6.19.36।।

ubhābhyāṅsampradhāryārthaṅrōcatēyattaducyatām .


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, vibhīṣaṇasya: Vibheeshana's, āyaṅmantraḥ this advice, mama: to me,rōcatē: pleasing, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, paṇḍitaḥ learned, bhavān me, nityam ever, mantraviśārada: capable of good advice, ubhābhyām for both, artham meaningful, sampradhārya: tradition, yat that which, rōcatē: appeals, tat that, ucyatām may be told to me.

"Lakshmana! This advice of Vibheeshana is pleasing to me. Sugriva is learned, and you are always capable of good advice. That which appeals to both of you, and which is meaningful may be informed to me."
ēvamuktautatōvīrāvubhausugrīvalakṣmaṇau .

samudācārasaṅyuktamidaṅvacanamūcatuḥ ।।6.19.37।।


tataḥ then, ēvam that way, uktau: having been said, vīrau: heroic, sugrīvalakṣmaṇau: to Sugriva and Lakshmana, ubhau: both, samudācārasaṅyuktam mixed with respectful tradition, idam these, vacanam words, ūcatuḥ gave reply.

Heroic Rama having said that way to both, Lakshmana and Sugriva replied thus respectfully following tradition (with folded hands).
kimarthanaunaravyāghra: narōciṣyatirāghava: .

vibhīṣaṇēnayaccōktamasmin kālēsukhāvaham ।।6.19.38।।


naravyāghra: tiger among kings, rāghava: Raghava, asmin this, kālē: time, sukhāvaham good, yat that which, vibhīṣaṇēna: by Vibheeshana, uktam has been spoken, nau: us, kimartham why will, narōciṣyati: it not be pleasing.

"O Raghava, the tiger among kings! Why will this good advice given to us at this time by Vibheeshana be not pleasing?" Sugriva and Lakshmana said to Rama."
abadhvāsāgarēsētuṅghōrē.sminvaruṇālayē .

laṅkānāsādituṅśakyāsēndrairapisurāsuraiḥ ।।6.19.39।।


ghōrē: terrific, varuṇālayē: ocean, asmin sāgarē: over this ocean, sētum bridge, abadhvā: building, laṅkā: Lanka city, sēndrairapi: even for Indra, surāsurairapi: for Suras and Asuras also, āsāditum to cross over, naśakyā: not possible.

Without building a bridge over this terrific ocean, the abode of Varuna, it is not possible to cross over to Lanka even for Indra, suras or Asuras.
vibhīṣaṇasyaśūrasyayathārthaṅkriyatāṅvacaḥ ।।6.19.40।।

alaṅkālātyayaṅkṛtvāsāgarō.yaṅniyujyatām .

yathāsainyēnagacchāmapurīṅrāvaṇapālitām ।।6.19.41।।


śūrasya: valiant, vibhīṣaṇasya: Vibheeshana's, vacaḥ words of advice, yathārtham are true, kriyatām to execute, kālātyayam no use was ting time, kṛtvā: to do, alam it is enough, rāvaṇapālitām ruled by Ravana, purīm city, yathā: like that, sainyēna: army, gacchāma: to proceed, sāgara: ayaṅ: over th is ocean, niyujyatām let us request.

"Valiant Vibheeshana's words are true. Let us proceed and let us not waste time. Let us request Sagara to help the army to be able to proceed to Lanka ruled by Ravana (Sugriva and Lakshmana said to Rama)."
ēvamuktaḥkuśāstīrnōtīrēnadanadīpatēḥ .

saṅvivēśatadārāmōvēdyāmivahutāśanaḥ ।।6.19.42।।


ēvam in that way, uktaḥ having said, rāmaḥ Rama, tadā: then, nadanadīpatēḥ ocean, kuśāstīrṇē: on the Kusa grass mat, tīrē: shore, hutāśana: fire God, vēdyāmiva: like in the sacrificial altar, saṅvivēśa: sat.

Then when they (Sugriva and Lakshmana) said so to Rama, he sat on Kusa grass mat on the shore of the ocean just as fire stayed in the sacrificial altar.
