Sloka & Translation

[Rama is immersed in grief. Sugriva comforts Rama to be courageous.]

taṅtuśōkaparidyūnaṅrāmaṅdaśarathātmajam .

uvācavacanaṅśrīmān sugrīvaśśōkanāśanam ।।6.2.1।।


śrīmān: glorious, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, śōkaparidyūnam: one who is filled with sorrow, daśarathātmajam: Dasaratha's son, tam: him, rāmam: at Rama, śōkanāśanam: to remove the agony , vacanam: words of advice, uvāca: spoke

Glorious Sugriva spoke such words of advice to remove the agony of Rama,son of Dasaratha, who was filled with sorrow.
kiṅtvaṅsantapyasēvīra ! yathānyaḥprākṛtastathā .

maivaṅbhūstyajasantāpaṅkṛtaghnaivasauhṛdam ।।6.2.2।।


vīra: heroic, anyaḥ like others , prākṛtaḥ common man, yathā: likewise, tathā: that way, tvayā: by you, kim: why, tapyatē: give up grief, ēvam: that way, mābhūḥ do not be, ēvama: like this , kṛtaghnaḥ ungrateful one, iva: like that, santāpam: grief, tyaja: give up sauhṛdam: friendship

"Heroic Rama! Why are you grieving like a common man? Give up your grief just like an ungrateful one gives up friendship."
santāpasyacatēsthānaṅnahipaśyāmirāghava! .

pravṛttāvupalabdhāyāṅjñātēcanilayēripōḥ ।।6.2.3।।


rāghava: Raghava, pravṛttau: information , upalabdhāyām: having secured,jñātē: knowing, canilayēripōḥ and the enemy's residence, santāpasya: mourning, sthānam: location, napaśyāmihi: I do not see the reason

"Raghava! Having secured the information (of Sita) and known the location of the enemy's residence, I do not see the reason for your mourning."
matimānśāstravitprājñaḥpaṇḍitaścāsirāghava! .

tyajēmāṅpāpikāṅbuddhiṅkṛtātmēvārthadūṣaṇīm ।।6.2.4।।


rāghava: Raghava, matimān: an intellectual, śāstravit: one who is well versed in Sastras, prājñaḥ one who is wise, paṇḍitaścaasi: and who is learned also, kṛtātmā: one who is efficient, arthadūṣaṇīm: one who is a violator of subtle truth, buddhim: intellect , imām: these, pāpikām: sinful, tyaja: give up

"Raghava! You are an intellectual, well versed in Sastras, wise and learned. Give up this sinful thought just as the one who is efficient gives up the one who violates subtle truth."
samudraṅlaṅghayitvātumahānakrasamākulam .

laṅkāmārōhayiṣyāmōhaniṣyāmaścatēripum ।।6.2.5।।

mahānakrasamākulam: that which is infested with huge crocodiles, samudram: ocean, laṅghayitvā: if we cross over, laṅkām: Lanka, ārōhayiṣyāma: ascending the fortress, tē: your, ripum: enemy, haniṣyāmaśca: know that he is killed

"If we cross over that ocean infested with huge crocodiles and ascend the fortress of Lanka, know that the enemy is killed."
nirutsāhasyadīnasyaśōkaparyākulātmanaḥ .

sarvārthāvyavasīdantivyasanaṅcādhigacchati ।।6.2.6।।


nirutsāhasya: one who is despondent, dīnasya: for a dejected person, śōkaparyākulātmanaḥ overwhelmed with grief, sarvārthāḥ in all matters, vyavasīdanti: dispirited, vyasanaṅca: and worry, adhigacchati: will be destroyed

"One who is despondent, dejected and overwhelmed with grief, will be dispirited in all matters. Not only that with worry he will meet with disaster."
imēśūrāssamarthāścasarvanōhariyūthapāḥ .

tvatpriyārthaṅkṛtōtsāhāḥpravēṣṭumapipāvakam .

ēṣāṅharṣēṇajānāmitarkaścāsmin dṛḍhōmama ।।6.2.7।।


sarvataḥ all these , imē: to you, hariyūthapāḥ vanara leaders, śūrāḥ heroes , samarthāśca: highly capable, tvatpriyārtham : for your happiness, pāvakam: fire, pravēṣṭum: to enter api: also, kṛtōtsāhaḥ are ready, ēṣām: these, harṣēṇa: joy, jānāmi: I know, mama: me, tarkaścāpi: even infer, dṛḍhaḥ I am certain

All these vanara leaders and heroes are highly capable and for your happiness they are even ready to enter fire. I know this from their joy and I even infer that it is certain (to happen).
vikramēṇasamānēṣyēsītāṅhatvāyathāripum .

rāvaṇaṅpāpakarmāṇaṅtathātvaṅkartumarhasi ।।6.2.8।।


ripum: enemy, pāpakarmāṇam: one of sinful deeds, rāvaṇam: Ravana, vikramēṇa: with prowess, hatvā: on killing, sītām: Sita, yathā: that way, samānēṣyē: bring back, tathā: that way, tvam: your, kartum: will do , arhasi: you ought to

"You ought to work such that we would kill that enemy Ravana of sinful deeds with our prowess and get back Sita. I hope you are capable of doing that."
sēturatrayathābadhyēdyathāpaśyēmatāṅpurīm .

tasyarākṣasarājasyatathātvaṅkururāghava! ।।6.2.9।।


rāghava: Raghava, atra: there, sētuḥ bridge, yathā: in that way, badhyēt: would build , tasya: his, rākṣasarājasya: rakshasa king's, tām: that, purīm: city, yathā:like that, paśyēmaḥ will see, tathā: that way, tvam: you, kuru: think

"Raghava! You think that we will be building a bridge and then seeing that city of the king of Rakshasas."
dṛṣṭavātāṅtupurīṅlaṅkāṅtrikūṭaśikharēsthitām .

hataṅcarāvaṇaṅyuddhēdarśanāvadhāraya ।।6.2.10।।


trikūṭaśikharē: on top of Trikuta mountain, sthitām: situated, tām: that, laṅkāṅpurīm: city of Lanka, dṛṣṭavā: after seeing, yuddhē: in war, tu: you, darśanāt: on having a look , rāvaṇam: Ravana, hatam: is killed, avadhāraya: can determine

"If the city of Lanka situated on top of Trikuta mountain is seen, you can be sure that Ravana is killed."
abadhvāsāgarēsētuṅghōrēcatuvaruṇālayē .

laṅkāṅnamardituṅśakyāsēndrairapisurāsuraiḥ ।।6.2.11।।


ghōrē: dreadful, varuṇālayē: abode of Varuna, sāgarē: on the ocean, sētum: bridge, abadhvā: without building, laṅkā: Lanka, sēndraiḥ Indra , surāsuraiḥapi: even suras and asuras, marditum: to crush, naśakyā: not possible

"Without building a bridge on that dreadful ocean, the abode of Varuna, it is not possible for suras or asuras accompanied by Indra also to crush Lanka."
sēturbaddhassamudrēcayāvallaṅkāssamīpataḥ ।।6.2.12।।

sarvaṅtīrṇaṅcamēsainyaṅjitamityupadhāraya .

imēhisamarēvīrāharayaḥkāmarūpiṇa ।।6.2.13।।


laṅkāsamīpataḥ up to Lanka, samudrē: on the ocean, yāvat: up to , sētuḥ bridge, baddha: on building, mē: mine, sarvam: all, sainyam: army, tīrṇam: crossed over, jitam iti: like having won, upadhāraya: consider, kāmarūpiṇaḥ those who can assume any form, imē: these, harayaḥ vanaras, samarē: in war, vīrāḥ heroic

"On building a bridge over the large ocean up to Lanka, when all my army of vanaras can cross over, you may consider that you have won. These vanaras are heroic in war and can assume any form at will."
tadalaṅviklabāṅbuddhim rājana ! sarvārthanāśanīm .

puruṣasyahilōkē.smin śōkaśśauryāpakarṣaṇaḥ ।।6.2.14।।


rājan: O king!, tat: therefore, sarvārthanāśanīm: that which destroys everything, viklabām agitated, buddhim: feeling , alam: enough, asmin: in this, lōkē: world, puruṣasya: man's, śōkaḥ sorrowful, śauryāpakarṣaṇa: valiance is lost

"O king, therefore enough of this agitated feeling which destroys everything. In this world the valiance of man is lost if he is sorrowful."
yattukāryaṅmanuṣyēṇaśauṇḍīryamavalambatā .

asmin kālēmahāprājñasattvamātiṣṭhatējasā ।।6.2.15।।


manuṣyēṇa: by a human being, yat: just as, śaiṇḍīryam: heroism, avalambatā: follows, kāryaṅ: task tu: you, mahāprājña: very wise, asmin: in this, kālē: world, tējasā: courage, sattvam: valour, atiṣṭa: rise up

"Just as heroism follows a human being in this world on accomplishing a task, you who are very wise, should resort to courage and valour and rise up."
śūrāṇāṅhimanuṣyāṇāṅtvadvidhānāṅmahātmanām .

vinaṣṭēvāpraṇaṣṭēvāśōkassarvārthanāśanaḥ ।।6.2.16।।


śūrāṇām: among the valiant ones, mahātmanām: great, tvadvidhānām: that method, manuṣyāṇām: by human being, vinaṣṭēvā: that which is destroyed, praṇaṣṭēvā: or lost, śōkaḥ worrying, sarvārthanāśanaḥ leads to disaster of everything

"If you who are great among the valiant ones worry for that which is destroyed or lost, it would lead to disaster of everything."
tattvaṅbuddhimatāṅśrēṣṭhassarvaśāstrārthakōvidaḥ .

madvidhaissacivaissārthamariṅjētumihārhasi ।।6.2.17।।


tvam: you, buddhimatām: highly intelligent, śrēṣṭhaḥ foremost sarvaśāstrārthakōvidaḥ well-versed in the meaning of all sastras, tvam: to you, tu: to you, madvidhaiḥ like me, sacivaiḥ friends sārtham: along with, arim: enemy, jētum: conquer, ihārhasi: you will

"You are highly intelligent, foremost among those who are well-versed in the meaning of all shastras. You will conquer your enemy along with friends like me."
nahipaśyāmyahaṅkaṅcit triṣulōkēṣurāghava .

gṛhītadhanuṣēyastētiṣṭhēdabhimukhōraṇē ।।6.2.18।।


rāghava: Raghava, raṇē: when in war, gṛhītadhanuṣaḥ holding the bow, tē: your, abhimukhō: in front, yaḥ who, tiṣṭhēt: stood by, kaṅcit: indeed, triṣu: in the three, lōkēṣu: worlds, aham: I, napaśyāmihi: have not seen

"O Raghava! When you hold the bow in war, Indeed who can stand in front of you in the three worlds. I have not seen."
vānarēṣusamāsaktaṅnatēkāryaṅvipatsyatē .

acirāddrakṣyasēsītāṅtīrtvāsāgaramakṣyam ।।6.2.19।।


vānarēṣu: upon vanaras, samāsaktam: entrusted , tēkāryam: this task of yours, navipatsyatē: will not be spoilt, akṣayam: that which cannot be subdued , sāgaram: ocean, tīrtvā: crossing over, acirāt: very soon, sītām: that Sita, drakṣyasē: you will see

"The task of yours entrusted to vanaras will never be spoiled. Very soon you will see Sita crossing over the ocean that cannot be subdued."
tadalaṅśōkamālambyakrōdhamālambabhūpatē! .

niścēṣṭāḥkṣatriyāmandāssarvēcaṇḍasyabibhyati ।।6.2.20।।


bhūpatē: O Lord of earth!, tat: that, śōkam: pain, ālambya: experienced, alam: enough, krōdham: anger, alamba: take on to, niścēṣṭāḥ become lethargic , kṣatriyāḥ when kshatriyas, mandāḥ dull people, caṇḍasya: at fearful one , sarvē: all, bibhyati: are scared

"O Lord of earth! Enough of that pain you have experienced. Give up sorrow and take on to anger. When kshatriyas are lethargic, they become dull but all are scared at a fearful one."
laṅghanārthaṅcaghōrasyasamudrasyanadīṅpatēḥ .

sahāsmābhirihōpētassūkṣmabuddhirvicāraya ।।6.2.21।।


sūkṣmabuddhiḥ one with subtle intellect, iha: now, asmābhiḥsaha: along with us,upētaḥ means , nadīpatēḥ lord of rivers, ghōrasya: dreadful, samudrasya: of ocean, laṅghanārtham: to cross over, vicāraya: think of

"You are endowed with subtle intellect and now think of the means to cross over this dreadful looking ocean; the lord of rivers."
laṅghitētasyataissainyaṅjitamityupadhāraya .

sarvaṅtīrṇaṅcamēsainyaṅjitamityavadhāryatām ।।6.2.22।।


taiḥ these vanaras, sainyaiḥ army, tasya: for them, laṅghitē: if they can cross, jitamityēva: have conquered, mē: my, sarvam: all, sainyam: army, tīrṇam: certain , jitamiti: have succeeded, avadhāryatām: certainly, upadhāraya: presume

"If the vanara army can cross (the ocean) you are certain that we will conquer. Presume that the army has succeeded."
imēhiharayaśśūrāssamarēkāmarūpiṇaḥ .

tānarīnvidhamiṣyantiśilāpādapavṛṣṭibhiḥ ।।6.2.23।।


samarē: in combat, śūrāḥ heroes, kāmarūpiṇaḥ those who can take any form at their will, imēharayaḥ these vanaras, śilāpādapavṛṣṭibhiḥ rain boulders and trees, tān: those, arīn: enemies, vidhamiṣyantihi: would cut them to size

"Being heroic in combat, these vanaras can take any form at their will.They would rain boulders and trees on enemies and cut them to size."
kathañcitsantariṣyāmastēvayaṅvaruṇālayam .

hatamityēvataṅmanyēyuddhēśatrunibarhaṇa! ।।6.2.24।।


śatrunibarhaṇa: exterminator of foes, varuṇālayam: abode of Varuna the ocean, kathañcit: by any means, vayam: us, santariṣyāma: the enemy, yuddē: in combat, taṅ: him(Ravana), hatamityēva: has been killed , manyē: think

"O Exterminator of foes! By whatever means the ocean is crossed by us, think that the enemy has been killed in combat."
kimuktvābahudhācāpisarvathāvijayībhavān .

nimittānicapaśyāmimanōmēsamprahṛṣyati ।।6.2.25।।


bahudhā: many, uktvā: speaking, kim: what use, sarvathā: by all means, bhavān: to you, vijayī: victory, nimittāni: signs, paśyāmi: are seen, mē: by me, manaḥ in mind, samprahṛṣyati: is highly delighted

"Of what use is speaking many words. By all means you will be victorious. I see signs of it and feel highly delighted in my mind."
।।ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēdvitīyassargaḥ।।
