Sloka & Translation

[The Sun god appears before Rama and sustains the construction of the bridge by Nila. Rama crosses the ocean accompanied by Lakshmana and the army.]

अथोवाचरघुश्रेष्टस्सागरंदारुणंवचः ।

अद्यत्वांशोषयिष्यामिसपाताळंमहार्णव: ।।6.22.1।।


अथ and thereafter, रघुश्रेष्ट the best one among Raghu's, सागरम् to ocean, दारुणम् terrific, वचः words, उवाच uttered, महार्णव ocean, अद्य now, सपाताळम् that under world, त्वाम् you, शोषयिष्यामि will make it dry.

Thereafter, Rama uttered, "I shall make you dry up to the underworld", to the ocean that made his terrific presence.
शरनिर्दग्धतोयस्यपरिशुष्कस्यसागर: ।

मयाशोषितसत्त्वस्यपांसुरुत्पद्यतेमहान् ।।6.22.2।।


सागर O ocean, मया by me, शरनिर्दग्दतोयस्य water dried up by the arrows, परिशुष्कस्य when it is dried up, शोषितसत्त्वस्य dried up to the core, महान् huge, सांसुः sand, उत्पद्यते will appear.

"O Ocean When your water is dried up to the core by my arrows, huge sand will appear."
मत्कार्मुकविसृष्टेवशरवर्षेणसागर ।

पारंतेऽद्यगमिष्यन्तिपदभिरेवप्लवङ्गमाः ।।6.22.3।।


सागर O Ocean, मत्कार्मुकविसृष्टेन all the creatures inhabiting you, शरवर्षेण by the rain of arrows, प्लवङ्गमाः monkeys, पदभिरेव to the other side of the shore, परंअद्य now to the other, गमिष्यन्ति will go.

"O Ocean, now the monkeys will go to the other side of the shore on your drying up with all the creatures inhabiting you by the rain of arrows showered by me."
विचिन्वन्नाभिजानासिपौरुषंनापिविक्रमम् ।

दानवालयसन्तापंमत्तोनाधिगमिष्यसि ।।6.22.4।।


दानवालय abode of demons, विचिन्वन् abode, पौरुषम् valour, नाभिजानासि, not known, विक्रममपि even prowess, न not, मत्तः mine, सन्तापम् sorrow, गमिष्यसिनाम will face from me.

"You, who are the abode of demons are not aware of my valour and prowess. You are not aware of the sorrow that you will face from me."
ब्राह्मेणास्त्रेणसंयोज्यब्रह्मदण्डनिभम् शरम् ।

संयोज्यधनुषिश्रेष्ठविचकर्षमहाबलः ।।6.22.5।।


महाबलः strong, ब्रह्मदण्डनिभम् resembling the rod of punishment of the creator, Brahma, शरम् arrow, ब्राह्मेणअस्त्रेण energized by Brahma, संयोज्य stretched, श्रेष्ठे best one, धनुषि by the bow, संयोज्य stretched, विचकर्ष released.

Rama proceeded to stretch the mighty bow that resembled the rod of punishment of Brahma energized by Brahma and released that best of bows.
तस्मिन्विविकृष्टेसहसाराघवेणशरासने ।

रोदसीसम्पफालेवपर्वताश्चचकम्पिरे ।।6.22.6।।


तस्मिन् by that, शरासने arrows from the bow, राघवेण by Rama, विकृष्टे pulled out, सहसा at once, रोदसी from the sky, सम्पफालेन to the earth, पर्वताश्च even mountains, चकम्पिरे trembled.

When Rama released the arrows from the bow, at once the sky to the earth including mountains trembled.
तमश्चलोकमाव्रतेदिशश्चवचकाशिरे ।

प्रतिचुक्षुभिरेचाशुसरांसिसरितस्तथा ।।6.22.7।।


तदा then, तमश्च by darkness, लोकम् world, अव्रते engulfed, दिशश्च even the directions, नचकाशिरे not noticeable, चाशसरांसिसरितः Furthermore rivers, प्रतिचुक्षुभिरे got agitated.

Then darkness engulfed the world, the directions were not noticeable and further the rivers were agitated.
तिर्यक्चसहानेक्षत्रैस्सङ्गतौचन्द्रभास्करौ ।

भास्करांशुभिरादीप्तंतमसाचसमावृतम् ।।6.22.8।।

चकाशेतदाकाशमुल्काशतविदीपितम् ।

अन्तरिक्षाच्चनिर्घातानिर्जग्मुरतुलस्वनाः ।।6.22.9।।


चन्द्रभास्करौ the Sun and moon, नक्षत्रेःसह with stars, तिर्यक् obliquely, सङ्गतौ moved, भास्करांशुभिः even the Sun light, आदीप्तम् not shining, तमसाच on account of darkness, समावृतम् engulfed all over, तत् then, आकाशम् sky, उल्काशत by the meteors, विदीपितम् again lighted, प्रचकाशे shone, अन्तरिक्षात् from the sky, अतुलस्वनाः unparalleled, निर्घाताः thunder, निर्जग्मुः shot forth.

The Sun and moon moved obliquely (from south to North) along with the stars. On account of the darkness that covered even the sun was not shining. The sky lighted by the meteors shone and unparalleled thunder shot forth.
वपुस्फुरुश्चघनादिव्यादिविमारुतपङ् ख्कयः ।

बभञ्जचतदावृक्षान्जलदानुद्वहन्नपिः ।।6.22.10।।


दिव्यमारुतपङ् ख्कयः terrific wind blew, वपुस्फुरुश्चघनादिव्यादि breaking forth the clouds, तदा then, जलदान् abode of cold water, उद्वहन् taking away in upward direction, अपिः even, वृक्षान् trees, बभञ्जच broke into.

Then terrific wind blew breaking forth the clouds, which is an abode of cold water, taking them away in upward direction breaking trees.
अरुजंश्चैनशैलाग्राशनिखराणिबभञ्जनः ।

दिविस्पृशोमहमेघास्सङ्गतास्समहास्वनाः ।।6.22.11।।

मुमुचुर्वैद्युताननगींस्तेमहाशनयस्तदा ।


शैलाग्रान् mountain peaks, अरुजन् च sounding, शिखराणि tops, बभञ्जच breaking, महामेधा huge cloud, दिवि sky, संगताः collecting together, महास्वनाः having extraordinary speed, वैद्युतान् fire of lightning, अनगीन् from the sky, मुमुचुः clouds, तदा then, ते those, महाशनयः loud sound.

Huge clouds collected were moving at extraordinary speed in the sky breaking mountain peaks. Those clouds in the sky sent forth fire of lightning making a loud sound.
यानिभूतानिदृश्यानिचुक्रुशुश्चाशनेसमम् ।।6.22.12।।

अदृश्यानिचभूतानिमुमुचुर्भैरवस्वनम् ।

शिशियरेचाभिभूतानिसन्त्रस्ताम्यद्विजन्तिच ।।6.22.13।।

सम्प्रविव्यथिरेचापिवचपस्पन्दिरेभयात् ।


दृश्यानि that which could be seen, यानि those, भूतानि creatures, आशनेसमम् remained still, चुकुश्रुः suffering pain, अदृश्यानि that which are seen, भूतानिच beings also, भैरवस्वन् like the devils and ghosts, मुमुचुः clouds, अभिभूतानि few other creatures, सन्त्रस्तानि from their place, उद्विजन्तिच came to appear, शिशियरेच even though cold, सम्प्रविव्यथिरेचापि although were together, भयात् in fear, नचपस्पन्दिरे were even thrown off.

The creatures like humans etc. That could be seen and those that could not be seen like devils and ghosts remained still out of fear. Few other creatures came out of their place even though it was cold. Some were thrown off from their habitation in fear although they were together.
सहाभूतैस्सतोयोर्मिस्सनागस्सहराक्षसः ।।6.22.14।।

सहसाऽभूत्ततोवेगाबदीमवेगोमहोदधिः ।

योजनंव्यतिचक्रामवेलामन्यत्रसम्ल्पवात् ।।6.22.15।।


ततः thereafter, सतोयोर्मिः those waves of water, सहाभूतै with its creatures, सनागः with serpents, सहराक्षसः with the demons, महोदधि great ocean, सहसा at once, भीमवेगः at terrific speed, अभूत् unprecedented, वेगात् speed, सम्ल्पवात् thrown out, अन्यत्रवेलाम् by the other tides, योजनम् one yojana, व्यतिचक्राम was thrown.

There after those waves of water with its creatures, serpents and demons were at once thrown off at terrific speed that was unprecedented. They were thrown beyond a yojana by the high tides.
तंतदासमतिक्रान्तंनातिचक्रामराघवः ।

समुद्धतममित्रघ्नोरामोनदनदीपतिम् ।।6.22.16।।


राघवः Rama, अमित्रघ्नः destroyer of foes, रामः Rama, तदा then, समतिक्रान्तम् transgressing, समुद्धतम् overweening, तम् them, नदनदीपतिम् Lord of rivers, नातिचक्राम not go far.

Rama the destroyer of foes did not attempt at the ocean that went far from the boundary, which was transgressing and overweening.
ततोमथ्यात्समुद्रस्यसागरस्स्वयमुत्थितः ।

उदयन् हिमहाशैलान्मेरोरिवदिवाकरः ।।6.22.17।।


ततः then, महामेरोः over the mighty Meru, उदयं rising, दिवाकरःइव like the Sun, सागरः Lord of ocean, समुद्रस्य ocean's, मध्यात् middle, स्वयम् himself, उत्थितः risen.

Then Sagara, the Lord of the ocean himself rising like the Sun over the mighty Meru Mountain rose from the middle of the ocean.
पन्नगैस्सहदीप्तास्यैस्समुद्रःप्रत्यदृश्यत ।

स्निग्धवैढूर्यसङ्काशोजाम्बूनदविभूषणः ।।6.22.18।।


स्निग्धवैदूर्यसङ्काशः bright like Vaidurya stone, जम्बूनदविभूषणः decked in pure gold, समुद्रः Lord of the ocean, दीप्तास्यैः as though blazing, पन्नगैरक्तमाल्यास्सह with serpents, प्रदृश्यत appeared.

Then the Lord of the Ocean shining like the Vaidurya stone decked in pure gold as if blazing appeared along with serpents.
रक्तमाल्याम्बरधरःपद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणः ।

सर्वपुष्पमयींदिव्यांशिरसाधारयन् स्रजम् ।।6.22.19।।

जातरूपमयैश्चैवतपनीयविभूषितैः ।

आत्मजानांचरत्नानांभूषितोभूषणोत्तमैः ।।6.22.20।।

धातुभिर्मण्डितश्शैलोविविधैर्हिमवानिव ।

एकावलीमध्यगतंतरलंपाटलप्रभम् ।।6.22.21।।

विपुलेनोरसा बिभ्रत्कौस्तुभस्य सहोदरम् ।

अघूर्णिततरङ्गौघःकालिकानिलसङ्गुलः ।।6.22.22।।

गङ्गासिन्दुप्रधाननाभिरापगाभिस्समावृतः ।

देवतानांसरूपाभिर्नानारूपाभिरीश्वरः ।।6.22.23।।

सागरस्समुपक्रम्यपूर्वमाम्नत्यरवीर्यवान् ।

अब्रवीत्प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यंराघवंशरपाणिनम् ।।6.22.24।।


रत्क्तमाल्याम्बरधरः clad in red coloured robes, पद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणः whose eyes were like lotus petals, शिरसा on the head, सर्वपुष्पमयीम् wearing different kinds of flowers, दिव्याम् wonderful, प्रजम् wreath, धारयन् wearing, जातरूपमयैश्चैव of polished gold, तपनीयविभूषणैः decked in shining ornaments, आत्मजानाम् from his own territory, रत्नानाम् precious gems, भूषणोत्तमैः best of ornaments, भूषितः decked, मण्डितः with different kinds of minerals, हिमनान् शैलःइव resembled the Himalaya mountain, एकावलीमध्यगतम् in the midst of pearl necklace on his bosom, पाण्डरप्रभम् shedding white lustre, कौस्तुभस्यसहोदरम् resembling Kausthuba (a precious jewel with emerald gem worn by Lord Vishnu), तरलम् hanging necklace, विपुलेन broad, उपसा near, बिभ्रत् moving, अघूर्णिततरङ्गौघः with several tides rising up, कालिकानिलसङ्कुलः with multitude of tides touching the of clouds, देवतानाम् goddesses, सरूपाभि forms also, नानारूपाभिः of diverse forms, गङ्गासिन्दुप्रधानाभिः Ganga and Sindhu, such important rivers, आपगाभिः coming near, समावृतः surrounded by, ईश्वरः Lord, वीर्यवान् valiant one, सागरः Sagara, समुपक्रम्य all coming near, पूर्वम् first, आम्नत्यर greeting, प्राञ्जलिः with folded hand s, शरपाणिनम् one who held the arrow, राघवम् to Rama, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Clad in red coloured robes, endowed with lotus petal like eyes having a wonderful wreath of diverse flowers on head, decked in shining ornaments of polished gold encrusted with precious gems from his own territory, he resembled the Himalayan Mountain with minerals. He had a hanging pearl necklace in the centre of his bosom shedding white lustre that resembled the Kausthuba of Lord Vishnu. With several tides moving near, and multitude of tides reaching the clouds threatening, surrounded by Goddesses of several forms and deities of important rivers like Ganga and Sindhu, the valiant Lord of the ocean greeted with folded palms and spoke these words to Rama who was wielding an arrow in his hand.
पृथिवीवायुराकाशमापोज्योतिश्चराघव: ।

स्वभावेसौम्य तिष्ठन्तिशाश्वतंमार्गमाश्रिताः ।।6.22.25।।


सौम्य noble, राघव Rama, पृथिवी earth, वायुः wind, आकाशम् space, आपः water, ज्योतिश्च fire, शाश्वतम् permanent, मार्गम् path, आश्रिताः following, स्वभावे its nature, तिष्ठन्ति remain.

"Noble Rama Earth, wind, space, water, and fire, the five elements remain in their path strictly following their nature."
तत्स्वभावोममाप्येषयदगाधोऽहमप्लवः ।

विकारस्तुभवेद्गाधएतत्तेप्रवदाम्यहम् ।।6.22.26।।


तत् that, अहम् I, अगाधः fathomless, अप्लवःइतयत् as such not capable of swimming out, एषः so, ममापि mine too, स्वभावः nature, गाधःतु fording, विकारः deviation, भवेत् will be, एतत् as such, ते to you, प्रवदामि I proclaim

"I am fathomless and as such not capable of being swum across as it is my nature too. My fording will be a deviation. I proclaim to you (how you can cross)."
नकामान्नचलोभाद्वानभयातत्सापार्थिवात्मज: ।

ग्राहनकाकुलजलंस्तम्बयेयंकथञ्जन ।।6.22.27।।


पार्थिवात्मज O Lord of the land, ग्राहनकाकुलजलम् infested by poisonous animals, कामात् out of desire, कथंचन in any case, स्तम्बयेयम् solidify water, लोभाद्वा out of covetousness, भयात् out of fear, न not.

"O Lord of the land Out of desire or covetousness or even out of fear I will not be able to solidify the water infested with poisonous animals."
विधास्येराम: येनापिविषहिष्येह्यहंतथा ।

नग्राहाप्रहरिष्यन्तियावत्सेनातरिष्यति ।।6.22.28।।

हरीणांतरणेरामकरिष्यामियथास्थलम् ।


राम O Rama, अहम् I, येनापि by means of which, तथा so also, विधास्ये in such a mode, हरीणाम् by the Vanaras, तरणे to cross over, स्थलम् base, यत्रा passage, करिष्यामि I will do, तथा and similarly, विषहिष्ये the poisonous creatures, सेना army, यावत् total, तरष्यति crosses over, ग्राहाः seizing, नप्रहरिष्यन्ति will not be of aggressive nature.

"O Rama I shall arrange a base in such a mode, by means of which the entire army of Vanaras can cross over the passage and I will also be seizing the poisonous animals and not be aggressive."
तमब्रवीत्तदारामःउद्यतोहिनदीपते ।

अमोघोऽयंमहाबाणःकस्मिन् देशेनिपात्यताम् ।।6.22.29।।


तदा then, रामः Rama, तम् , अब्रवीत् said, वरुणालया abode of Varuna, मे my, शृणु listen, अमोघः unfailing, आयम् this, महाबाणः mighty arrow, कस्मिन् in which, देशे location, निपात्यताम् should it be allowed to descend down.

Then Rama said, "O abode of Varuna, listen to me. In which location should I allow this unfailing mighty arrow to descend?"
रामस्यवचनंश्रुत्वातंचदृष्टवामहाशरम् ।

महोदधिर्महातेजाराघवंवाक्यमब्रवीत् ।।6.22.30।।


महातेजाः brilliant one, महोदधिः great ocean, रामस्य Rama's, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा on hearing, तम् his, महाशरम् mighty arrow, दृष्टवाच seeing at, राघवम् Rama, वाक्यम् this words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

On hearing the question of Rama, the mighty ocean seeing the brilliant arrow spoke these words to him.
उत्तरेणावकाशोऽस्तिकश्चित्पुण्यतमोमम ।

द्रुमकुल्यइतिख्यातोलोकेयथाभवान् ।।6.22.31।।


भवान् you, यथा like, लोके region, ख्यातः famous, द्रुमकुल्यःइति called Drumakulya, पुण्यतरः a holy place, कश्चित् a little, अवकाशः there is scope for you, मम to my, उत्तरेण north, अस्ति will be.

"To my north there is a holy place called Drumakulya, famous like you, and you have scope to act there (to descend the arrow)."
उग्रदर्शनकर्माणोबहवस्तत्रदस्यवः ।

आभीरप्रमुखाःपापाःपिबन्तिसलिलंमम ।।6.22.32।।


तत्र there, उग्रदर्शनकर्माणः marauders of terrific action, पापाः sinful, आभीरप्रमुखाः chief of Abhiras, बहवः many, दस्यवः enemies of gods, मम my, सलिलम् waters, पिबन्ति drinking.

"Marauders of terrific action, who are enemies of gods whose chief is Abhiras, live there drinking my (ocean) water performing sinful acts."
तैस्तुसंस्पर्शनंपापैर्नसहेपापकर्मभिः ।

अमोघःक्रियतांराम: तत्रतेषुशरोत्तमः ।।6.22.33।।


राम Rama, पापकर्मभिः sinful actions also, तैः those, पापैः sinners, तत् that, स्पर्शनम् their touch, नसहेयम् I do not tolerate, शरोत्तमः mighty arrow, तत्र there तेषु by that अमोघः unfailing, क्रियताम् can be released on them.

"Rama I cannot tolerate the touch of ones who are sinful in action. Therefore your (of descending this arrow down) mighty unfailing arrow can be released on them."
तस्यतद्वचनंश्रुत्वासागरस्यराघवः ।

मुमोचतंशरंदीप्तंवीरस्सागरदर्शनात् ।।6.22.34।।


महात्मनः great self, तस्यसागरस्य that Sagara's, तत् those, वचनम् words of request, श्रुत्वा hearing, सागरदर्शनात् on account of seeing the Sagara, दीप्तम् glowing, परम् supreme, तंशरम् that arrow, मुमोच let off.

On hearing the words of the request of Sagara and on account of seeing him, Rama let off the supreme arrow glowing (on the marauders).
तेनतन्मरुकान्तारंपृथिव्याखलुविश्रुतम् ।

निपातितश्शरोयत्रवज्राशनिसमप्रभः ।।6.22.35।।


तेन by the, वज्राशनिसमप्रभः like that of Indra's glow, शरः dart, यत्र there, निपातितः let down, तत् that, पृथिव्याम् region of land, मरुकान्तारम् Marakantaram, विश्रुतंखलु indeed was known as popularly.

By the letting down of the dart that resembled the glow of Indra that part of the land was indeed popularly known as Marakantara (Marwar and Bikaner region of Rajasthan).
ननादचतदातत्रवसुधाशल्यपीडिता ।

तस्माद्ब्राणमुखात्तोयमुत्पपातरसातलात् ।।6.22.36।।


तदा then, तत्र there, शल्यपीडिता crevice by the dart, वसुधा earth, ननाद popularly known, तस्मात् therefore, बाणमुखात् by the piercing of the dart, रसातलात् from the underworld, तोयम् water, उत्पपात came out.

At that part of the earth that was creviced by the piercing of the dart, water came out from the underworld.
सबभूवतदाकूपोव्रणइत्येभिविश्रुतः ।

सततंचोत्थितंतोयंसमुद्रस्येनदृश्यते ।।6.22.37।।


तदा then, सः that, कूपः well, व्रणःइत्येन as Vrana, विश्रुतः popularly, बभूव came to be known, समुद्रस्येव like the water of the ocean, तईयम् water, सततम् always, उत्थितम् springs out, दृश्यते seen.

That well (hole created by the dart) came to be known as Vrana. The water springing out of it forever is like sea water.
अवधारणशब्दश्चदारुणस्समपद्यत ।

तस्मात्तद्बाणनिपातेनत्वपःकुक्षिष्वशोषयत् ।।6.22.38।।


तस्मात् from that, दारुणः terrific, अवधारणशब्दः the sound that was produced, समपद्यत crack caused, तद्बाणनिपातेन by the act of letting off the dart, कुक्षिषु in the cavities, त्वपः water, अशोषयत् dried up.

A crack caused in the ground by letting off the dart produced terrific sound and by that, the water in the cavities of the ground dried up.
विख्यातंत्रिषुलोकेषुमधुकान्तारमेवतत् ।।6.22.39।।

मोक्षयित्वाततःकुक्षिंरामोदशरथात्मजः ।

वरंतस्मैददौविद्वान्मरवेऽमरविक्रमः ।।6.22.40।।


मरुकान्तारम् Marukantaram, त्रिषु in three, लोकेषु worlds, विख्यातम् very famous, दशरथात्मजः Dasaratha's son, विद्वान् learned, अमरविक्रमः one who has the valour of gods, रामः Rama, तम् those, कुक्षिम् cavities, शोषयित्वा making dry, तस्मैमरवे for that Marukantaram, वरवे boon, ददौ: gave.

Marukantaram is famous in the three worlds. Dasaratha's Rama, who is learned and has the valour of gods made the cavities dry and gave a boon.
पशव्यश्चाल्परोगश्चफलमूलरसायुतः ।

बहुस्नेहोबहुक्षीरस्सुगधनिर्विविधौषधः ।।6.22.41।।

एवमेतैर्गुणैरुक्तोबहुभिस्संयुतोमरुः ।

रामस्यवरदानाच्चशिवःपन्थाबभूवह ।।6.22.42।।


मरुः Maru, रामस्य Rama's, वरदानात् by virtue of the boon, पशव्यश्च tender grass for cows, अल्परोगश्च with less diseases, फलमूलरसायुतः with fruits and roots and honey, बहुस्नेहः very ideal, बहुक्षीरः plenty of milk, सुगधनिः fragrant, विविधौषधिः diverse kinds of medicinal herbs, एवम् in that way, युक्तः suitable, एतैः all these, गुणैः qualities, संयुतः endowed with, शिवः auspicious, पन्थाः holy, बभूव became.

By virtue of Rama's boon Maru became a beautiful land with tender grass for cows, with less diseases, very ideal for fruits, roots, and juicy foods, for plenty of milk, and suitable for fragrance, diverse kinds of medicinal herbs. Endowed with these virtues it became a holy and auspicious place.
तस्मिन् दग्धेतदाकुक्षौसमुद्रस्सरितांपतिः ।

राघवंसर्वशास्त्रज्ञमिदंवचनमब्रवीत् ।।6.22.43।।


तदा then, तस्मिन् that, कुक्षौ land, दग्धे burnt, सरितांपति Lord of rivers,, समुद्रः ocean, सर्वशास्त्रज्ञम् learned in all sastras, राघवम् Rama, इदम् these, वचनम् words, अब्रवीत् spoken.

Thereafter when that land of Drumakulyam was burnt (by Rama's arrow) the Lord of rivers looked at Rama who was learned in all sastras spoke these words.
अयंसौम्य: नलोनामतनयोविश्वकर्मणः ।

पित्रादत्तवरशीमान्प्रतिमोविश्वकर्मणाः ।।6.22.44।।


सौम्य noble one, श्रीमान् prosperous one, नलोनाम named Nala, अयम् this, विश्वकर्मणः by Vishwakarma's, तनयः son, पित्रा father, दत्तवरः obtained boons, विश्वकर्मणः in architecture, प्रतिमः equal to father.

"Noble Rama This prosperous one named Nala is the son of Vishwakarma. Since he has obtained boons from his father, he is equal to his father in architecture."
एषसेतुंमहोत्साहःकरोतुमयिवानरः ।

तमहंधारयिष्यामियथाह्येषपितातथा ।।6.22.45।।


महोत्साहः full of zeal, एषःवानरः this Vanara, मयि over me, सेतुम् bridge, करोतु will built, तम् him, अहम् I, धारयिष्यामि will bear, पिता father, यथा that way, एषः he is, तथा like him.

"This monkey is full of zeal. He will build a bridge over me, and I will bear it. In that way he is like his father."
एवमुक्त्वोदधिर्नष्टस्समुत्थायनलस्तदा ।

अब्रवीद्वानरश्रेष्ठोवाक्यंरामंमहाबलः ।।6.22.46।।


उदधिः Sea God, एवम् in that way, उक्त्वा having spoken, नष्टः disappeared, तदा thereafter, वानरश्रेष्ठः foremost of Vanaras, नलः Nala, समुत्थाय getting up, महाबलः mighty, रामम् at Rama, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Having spoken in that way, the Sea God disappeared. Nala, the foremost of vanaras, got up there after and spoke these words to mighty Rama.
अहंसेतुंकरिष्यामिविस्तीर्णेवरुणालये ।

पितुस्सामर्थ्यमास्थायतत्त्वमहामहोदधिः ।।6.22.47।।


अहम् I, पितुः father, सामर्थ्यम् skill, आस्थाय adopting, विस्तीर्णे broad, वरुणालये on the abode of Varuna, सेतुम् bridge, करिष्यामि will build महोदधिः ocean god, तत्त्वम् truth, आह has spoken.

अयंहिसागरोभीमस्सेतुकर्मदिदृक्ष्याः ।

ददौदण्डभयाद्गाधंराघवायमहोदधिः ।।6.22.48।।


भीमः fearsome, अयंहि I also, सागरः ocean, महोदधिः mighty ocean, दण्डभयात् fear of punishment, सेतुकर्मदिदृक्ष्या to witness the building of a bridge, राघवाय to Rama, गाधम् place, ददौ allowed a passage.

This fearsome ocean of mighty Sagara (dug by Sagara) then allowed a passage for Rama, out of fear of punishment and also to witness the building of a bridge.
मममातुर्वरोदत्तोमन्दरेविश्वकर्मणा ।

औरसस्तस्यपुत्रोऽहंसदृशोविश्वकर्मणा ।।6.22.49।।

नचाप्यहमनुक्तोवःप्रब्रूयामात्मनोगुणान् ।

समर्थश्चाप्यहंसेतुंकर्तुंवैवरुणालये ।।6.22.50।।

स्मारितोऽस्म्यहमेतेनतत्त्वमहामहोदधिः ।

काममद्वैवबध्नन्तुसेतुंवानरपुङ्गवाः ।।6.22.51।।


मन्दरे on Mandara mountain, विश्वकर्मणा Vishwakarmana, मममातुः my mother, वरः boon, दत्तः has given, अहम् I, तस्य her, औरसःपुत्रः born out of her body, विश्वकर्मणा Vishwakarma, सदृशः I am like him, एतेन by that, स्मारितःअस्मि I have put in my memory, महोदधिः great ocean, तत्त्वम् nature, आह I am aware, अनुक्तः I have not spoken, अहम् I, आत्मनः myself, गुणान् qualities, वः unless, नप्रब्रूयाम् will not speak, अहम् I, वरुणालये abode of Varuna, सेतुम् bridge, कर्तुम् will build, समर्थश्चापि am capable, कामम् required material, वानरपुङ्गवाः Vanara leaders, अद्यैव right away, सेतुम् for the bridge, बद्नन्तु for building.

"On the Mandara mountain Vishwakarma gave a boon to my mother. I am that Vishwakarma's own son, and I am like him at work by that cause. I have put in my memory all about the ocean. I am aware of the truth of the ocean. I could not speak of my qualities unless questioned. I can build a bridge over the abode of Varuna.Right away let the Vanara leaders get the material required for building the bridge (said Nala)."
ततोविसृष्टारामेणसर्वतोहरियूथपाः ।

अभिपेतुर्महारण्यंहृष्टाश्शतसहस्रशः ।।6.22.52।।


ततः then, रामेण by Rama, विसृष्टाः directed, रियूथपाः Vanara troop leaders, हृष्टाः gladly, शतसहस्रशः hundred thousand, महारण्यम् huge forest, सर्वतः all over, अभ्युत्पेतुः sprang up.

Then directed by Rama the Vanara troop leaders in hundreds and thousands sprang up gladly all over the huge forest.
तेनगान्नगसङ्काशाश्शाखामृगगणर्षभाः ।

बभञ्जुःवानरास्तत्रप्रचकर्षुश्चसागरम् ।।6.22.53।।


नगसङ्काशाः mountain like, ते those, शाखामृगगणर्षभाः bulls among Vanaras, तत there upon, नगान् from the mountain, पादपान् roots of trees, बभञ्जुः collected, सागरम् into the sea, प्रचकर्षुश्च started moving.

Mountain like bodied Vanara bulls there upon started collecting roots of trees from the foot of mountain and moved them into the sea.
तेसालैश्चाश्वकर्णैश्चधवैशैश्चवानराः ।

कुटजैरर्जुनैस्तालैस्तिलकैस्न्तिशैरपि ।।6.22.54।।

बिल्वकैस्सप्तपर्णैश्चकर्णिकारैश्चसुपुष्पितैः ।

चूतैश्चाशोकवृक्षैश्चसागरंसमपूरयन् ।।6.22.55।।


वानराः Vanaras, सालैश्च sala trees, अश्वकर्णैश्च as vakarna trees, धवैः dhava trees, वंशैश्च bamboo, कुटजैः kutaja, अर्जुनैः arjuna, तालैः palmira, तिलकैः tilaka, न्तिशैरपि trisaira, बिल्वकैः bilva, सप्तपर्णैश्च and saptaparni, पुष्पितैःकर्णिकारैः karnikara blossoms, चूतैश्च mango, अशोकवृक्षैश्च and ashoka trees, सागरम् into ocean, पर्यपूरयन् brought and dumped.

The Vanaras brought sala, asvakarna, dhava, bamboo, kutaja arjuna, palmira, tilaka, trisaira, bilva, saptaparni trees karnikara plants with blossoms, mango trees and ashoka trees and dumped into the ocean.
समूलांश्चविमूलांश्चपादपान् हरिसत्तमाः ।

इन्द्रकेतूनिवोद्यम्यप्रजह्रूर्वानरास्तरून् ।।6.22.56।।


हरिसत्तमाः foremost of the Vanaras, समूलान् च along with the roots, विमूलान् च some without roots, पादपान् trees, इन्द्रकेतूनिव like Indra's flagstaff, उद्यम्य lifting up, प्रजह्रुः hurled वानरास्तरून् Vanaras thrown down (into the sea)

Lifting some trees with roots and some without roots like the staff of Indra's flag, Vanaras hurled down the trees into the sea.
ताळानदाडिमगुल्मांश्चनारिकेळन्विभीतकान् ।

वकुलान्कदिरान्निम्बान्समाजह्रुस्समन्ततः ।।6.22.57।।


ताळान् palmira, दाडिमगुल्मांश्च dadima trees, नारिकेळविभीतकान् coconut trees, करीरान् karira, बकुलान् bakula, निम्बान् nimba, समन्ततः brought all of them, समाजह्रुः and dropped into the ocean.

They brought palmira, dadima, coconut, karira, bakula and nimba trees and dropped all of them into the ocean.
हस्तिमतान्महाकायाःपाषाणांश्चमहाबलाः ।

पर्वतांश्चसमुत्पाट्ययन्स्सरैःपरिवहन्तिच ।।6.22.58।।


महाकायाः of huge body, महाबालाः strong, हस्तिमात्रान् like elephants, पाषाणान् stones, पर्वतांश्च mountains, समुत्पाट्य collecting and lifting up, यन्स्रैः by machines, परिवहन्तिच transported.

The Vanaras of huge body size and strong like elephants collected stones and mountains, lifted them, and transported into the sea.
प्रक्षिप्यमाणैरचलैस्सहसाजलमुद्दृतम् ।

समुत्ससर्पआकाशमवासर्पत्ततस्ततः ।।6.22.59।।


सहसा at once, प्रक्षिप्यमाणैः thrown up, अचलैः mountains, उद्दृतम् rose up, जलम् water, आकाशम् sky, समुत्ससर्प touched, ततः then, पुनः again, अवासर्पत् spread

At once the water threw up (by dropping the mountains) rose, touching the sky and spreading.
समुद्रंक्षोभयामासुर्वानराश्चस्समन्ततः ।

सूत्राण्यन्येप्रगृह्णान्तिव्यायतंशतयोजनम् ।।6.22.60।।


समन्ततः all over, निपतन्तः on account of throwing, समुद्रम् into the sea, क्षोभयामासुः stirred up, अन्ये others, शतयोजनम् a hundred yojanas, आयतम् breadth, सूत्राणि by rope, प्रगृह्णन्ति held.

On account of throwing into the sea it got stirred up Others held the rope over a hundred yojanas in breadth (to make it even).
नलश्चक्रेमहासेतुंमध्येनदनदीपतेः ।

सतदाक्रियतेसेतुर्वानरैर्घोरकर्मभिः ।।6.22.61।।


नलः Nala, नदनदीपतेः Lord of rivers, मध्ये centre, महासेतुम् huge bridge, चक्रे started, तदा then, घोरकर्मभिः terrific task, वानरैः with Vanaras, सेतुः bridge, क्रियते built.

Nala started the task of building the huge bridge in the centre of the ocean with Vanaras.
दण्डानन्येप्रगृह्णन्तिविचिन्वन्तितथापरे ।।6.22.62।।

वानरैश्शतशस्तत्ररामस्याज्ञापुरस्सराः ।

मेघाभैःपर्वताग्रैश्चतृणैःकाष्ठैर्बबन्धिरे ।।6.22.63।।


अन्ये others, दण्डान् sticks, प्रगृह्णन्ति holding, तथा in the same way, अपरे some others, विचिन्वन्ति following, रामस्य of Rama, आज्ञापुरस्सरैः the command in front, शतशः in hundreds, मेघाभिः like clouds, पर्वताग्रैश्च like top of mountains, वानरैः with Vanaras, तृणैः reeds, काष्ठैश्च logs of wood, बबन्धिरे built.

Others held sticks and some held logs of wood and reeds following the command of Rama, hundreds of Vanaras who looked like clouds and mountain tops built the bridge.
पुष्पिताग्रैश्चतरुभिस्सेतुंबध्नन्तिवानराः ।

पाषाणांश्चगिरिप्रख्यागनिरीणांशिखराणिच ।।6.22.64।।

दृश्यन्तेपरिधावन्तोगृह्यदानवसन्निभाः ।


वानराः Vanaras, पुष्पिताग्रैः trees with blossoms on top, तरुभिः creepers, सेतुम् for the bridge, बध्नन्ति binding दानवसन्निभा like the Danavas, गिरिप्रख्यान् like the huge mountains, पाषाणांश्च boulders also, गिरीणाम् mountains, शिखराणिच tops, गृह्य seizing, परिधावन्त running, दृश्यन्ते were found.

The Vanaras who were like Danavas, huge mountains in size were seen seizing boulders from the mountain, the trees with blossoms, and creepers for binding the bridge and running.
शिलानांक्षिप्यमाणानांशैलानांनिपात्यताम् ।

बभूवतुमुलश्शब्दस्तदातस्मिन्महोदधौ ।।6.22.65।।


तस्मिन् in that, महोदधौ lofty ocean, क्षिप्यमाणानां hurling, शिलानाम् mountains, तत्र so also, निपात्यताम् by throwing, शैलानाम् mountains, तुमुलः tumultuous, शब्दः sound, तदा then, बभूव arose.

By hurling off the mountains in that lofty ocean and throwing stones, a tumultuous sound arose.
कृतानिप्रथमेनाह्नायोजनानिचतुर्दश ।

प्रहृष्टैर्गजसङ्काश्चैस्त्वरमाणैःप्लवङ्गमैः ।।6.22.66।।


प्रहृष्टैः rejoicing, गजसङ्काशैः elephant like, त्वरमाणैः speedily, प्लवङ्गमैः the monkeys, प्रथमेन first, अह्ना one day, चतुर्धश fourteen, योजनानि yojana distance, कृतानि was built.

Elephants like monkeys rejoiced over building speedily fourteen yojanas the distance of the bridge on the first day.
द्वितीयेनतथैचाह्नायोजनानितुविंशतिः ।

कृतानिप्लवगैस्तूर्णंभीमकायैर्महाबलैः ।।6.22.67।।


तथैन in the same order, भीमकायैः of fierce body, महाबलैः extremely strong, प्लवगैः Vanaras, तूर्णम् soon, द्वितीयेन on the second, अह्ना one day, विंशतिः twenty, योजनानि yojanas, कृतानि built.

In the same order the Vanaras of fierce bodies and extremely strong ones soon built twenty yojanas on the second day.
अह्नातृतयेनतथायोजनानिकृतानिच ।

त्वरमाणैर्महाकायैरेकविंशतिरेवच ।।6.22.68।।


तथा that way, त्वरमाणैः very fast, महकायैः of huge body, तृतीयेन on the third, अह्ना one day, एकविंशतिरेवच twenty one, योजनानि yojanas, कृतानिच constructed.

Endowed with huge body that way the Vanaras built extremely fast, twenty one yojanas on the third day.
चतुर्थेनतथाचाह्नाद्वाविंशतिरथासिवा ।

योजनानिमहावेगैःकृतानित्वरितस्तुतैः ।।6.22.69।।


ततः there upon, महावेगैः of great speed, त्वरितैः at once, अथापि so also, वा and, चतुर्धेन on the fourth, अह्ना a day, द्वाविंशतिः twenty two, योजनानि yojanas, कृतानि did.

There upon at once Vanaras of great speed built twenty two yojanas on the fourth day.
पञ्चमेनतथाचाह्नाप्लवगैःक्षिप्रकारिभिः ।

योजनानित्रयोविंशत्सुवेलमधिकृत्यवै ।।6.22.70।।


तथा similarly, पञ्चमेन fifth day, अह्ना a day, क्षिप्रकारिभिः those who were endowed with great impetus, प्लवगैः Vanaras, सुवेलम् अधिकृत्य crossing mount Suvela, त्रयोविंशत् twentythree, योजनानि yojanas.

Similarly, on the fifth day the Vanaras endowed with great impetus built twenty three yojanas and crossed Mount Suvela.
सवानरवरश्रशीमान्विश्वकर्मात्माजोबली ।

बबन्धसागरेसेतुंयथाचाप्यतथापिता ।।6.22.71।।


वानरवरः foremost of the Vanaras, श्रीमान् glorious, विश्वकर्मात्मजः son of Vishwakarma, बलि strong one, सः he, अस्य his, पिता father, यथा like, तथा so also, सागरे in the sea, सेतुम् bridge, बबन्ध built.

Nala the son of Vishwakarma, the foremost of the Vanaras and strong like his father built the bridge in the sea.
सनलेनकृतस्सेतुस्सागरेमकरालये ।

शुशुभेसुभगश्रशीमान् स्वातीपथइवाम्बरे ।।6.22.72।।


मकरालये abode crocodiles, सागरे in the sea, नलेन by Nala, कृतः built, सुभगः auspicious, श्रीमान् glorious, सः that, सेतुः bridge, अम्बरे sky, स्वातीपथइव like the street of stars, शुशुभे looked.

The bridge was built on the sea, an abode of crocodiles, was auspicious, glorious, and looked like the street in space (milky path).
ततोदेवस्सगन्धर्वास्सिद्दाश्चपरमर्षयः ।

आगम्यगगनेतस्थुर्द्रष्टुकामास्तदद्बुतम् ।।6.22.73।।


ततः then, सगन्धर्वा the Gandharvas, देवाः gods, सिद्दाश्च even siddhas, परमर्षयः very happy, तत् then, अद्भुतम् it is wonderful, द्रष्टुकामाः desiring to see that, आगम्यगगने reached the sky, तस्थुः stationed.

The Gandharvas, gods and even siddhas felt happy and reached their stationed in the sky to see the wonderful bridge.
दशयोजनविस्तीर्णंशतयोजनमायतम् ।

ददृशुर्देवगन्धर्वानलसेतुंसुदुष्करम् ।।6.22.74।।


देवगन्धर्वाः gods and Gandharvas, दशयोजनविस्तीर्णम् ten yojanas in width, शतयोजनम् hundred yojanas, आयतम् in length, सुदुष्करम् exceedingly difficult to build, नलसेतुम् bridge built by Nala, ददृशुः witnessed.

Gods and Gandharvas witnessed the bridge built by Nala that was ten yojanas in width and hundred yojanas in length.
आप्लवन्तःप्लवन्तश्चगर्जन्तश्चप्लवङ्गमाः ।।6.22.75।।

तदच्नित्यमसह्यंचह्यद्भुतंरोमहर्षणम् ।

ददृशुस्सर्वभूतानिसागरेसेतुबन्धनम् ।।622.76।।


प्लवङ्गमाः monkeys, आप्लवन्तः here and there jumping, प्लवन्तश्च jumping about, गर्जन्तश्च roaring, सर्वभूतानि all creatures, आच्नित्यम् that which cannot be conceived in mind, असह्यंच impossible, अद्भुतम् marvellous, रोमहर्षणम् which is thrilling, सागरे in the sea, तत् that, सेतुबन्दनम् bridge constructed, ददृशुः witnessed.

The monkeys were jumping about here and there roaring (in joy). All creatures witnessed the bridge that was inconceivable, marvellous, thrilling, and impossible to build constructed in the sea.
तानिकोटिसहस्राणिवानराणांमहौजसाम् ।

बध्नन्तस्सागरेसेतुंजुग्मुःपारंमहोदधेः ।।6.22.77।।


महौजसाम् the glorious, वानराणाम् Vanaras, तानि those, कोटिसहस्राणि thousands of crores, सागरे sea, सेतुम् bridge, बध्नन्तः constructed, महोदधेः from the great ocean, पारम् other side, जग्मुः reached.

The glorious Vanaras in thousands of crores reached the other side of the sea from the bridge constructed in the great sea.
विशालस्सुकृतश्रशीमान् सुभूमिस्सुसमाहितः ।

अशोभतमहान् सेतुस्सीमन्तइवसागरे ।।6.22.78।।


विशालः broad, सुकृतः well built, श्रीमान् magnificent, सुभूमिः extensive, सुसमाहितः smootheven without ups and downs, महान् huge, सेतुः bridge, सागरे in the sea, सीमन्तइवअशोभत was charming like the partition in the woman's hair.

That huge bridge was well built, magnificent, evenly built, and extensive and looked charming like the partition in a woman's hair.
ततःपारेसमुद्रस्यगदापाणिर्विभीषणः ।

परेषामभिघातार्थमतिष्ठत्सचिवैस्सहा ।।6.22.79।।


ततः there upon, विभीषणः Vibheeshana, गदापाणिः holder of mace, परेषाम् enemies, अभिघातार्थम् to slay the aforesaid, सचिवैःसहा along with friends, समुद्रस्य from the ocean, पारे other side, अतिष्ठत् stayed.

There upon Vibheeshana holding the mace stood on the other side of the ocean along with his friends to slay the enemies.
सुग्रीवस्तुततःप्राहरामंसत्यपराक्रमम् ।

हनूमन्तंत्वमारोहअङ्गदंचापिलक्ष्मणः ।।6.22.80।।

अयंहिविपुलोवीरसागरोमकरालयः ।

वैहायपौयुवामेतौवानरौतारयिष्यतः ।।6.22.81।।


ततः then, सुग्रीवस्तु Sugriva also, सत्यपराक्रमम् one of truthful valour, रामम् Rama, प्राह mount, वीर heroic, मकरालयः home of crocodiles, अयम् this, आरोह climbing, अथ and so, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, त्वम् you, हनूमन्तम् Hanuman's, हि will do, अङ्गदम् Angada, एतौ like that, वानरौ Vanaras, वैहायसौ to the sky, युवाम् hold up both, तारयिष्यतः will assist to cross.

Sugriva addressed Rama of truthful valour and said, "You mount on heroic Hanuman, let Lakshmana climb on Angada. These Vanaras will hold you up in the sky and assist you to cross the ocean."
अग्रतस्तस्यसैन्यस्यश्रीमान्रामस्सलक्ष्मणः ।

जगामधन्वीधर्मात्मासुग्रीवेणसमन्वितः ।।6.22.82।।


सलक्ष्मणः accompanied by Lakshmana, श्रीमान् glorious, धर्मात्मा righteous, रामः Rama, सुग्रीवेण with Sugriva, समन्वितः joining together, धन्वी wielder of bow, तस्यसैन्यस्य his army, अग्रतः in front, जगाम proceeded.

Accompanied by Lakshmana and joined together with Sugriva, glorious and righteous Rama walked in front of the army.
न्येमध्येनगच्छन्तिपार्श्वतोऽन्येप्लवङ्गमाः ।

सलिलंप्रपतन्तन्येमार्गमन्येनलेभिरे ।।6.22.83।।

केचिद्वैहायसगतास्सुपर्णाइवपुप्लुवुः ।


अन्ये others, प्लवङ्गमाः monkeys, मध्येनगच्छन्ति going in the middle, अन्ये some others, पार्श्वतः in the side, अन्ये some others, सलिलम् water, प्रपतन्ति falling down (having no space to walk), अन्ये some others, मार्गम् path, नलेभिरे on the shore, केचित् a few, वैहायसगताः through the path of sky, सुपर्णाःइव like birds, पुप्लुवुः went.

While some monkeys walked in the middle some went in the side, some others were falling down in water (for the want of space to walk) some others went like birds in the path of the sky.
घोषेणमहतातस्यसिन्धोर्घोषंसमुच्छ्रितम् ।

भीमन्तर्दधेभीमातरन्तीहरिवाहिनी ।।6.22.84।।


तरन्ती by the advancement, भीमा frightening, हरिवाहिनी army troops of monkeys, महता massive, घोषेण by the loud noise, समुच्छ्रितम् risen, भीमम् terrific, तस्य its सिन्धोः of the ocean, घोषम् sound, अन्तर्धधे drowned.

The terrific sound caused by the frightening advancement of massive monkey troops the sound of the ocean got drowned.
वानराणांहिसातीर्णावाहिनीनलसेतुना ।

तीरेनिविविशेराज्ञाबहुमूलफलोदके ।।6.22.85।।


नलसेतुना the bridge of Nala, तीर्णा having reached, वानराणाम् Vanaras, सा that, वाहिनी, army राज्ञा by the king, बहुमूलफलोदके filled with several roots and fruits, तीरे shore, निविविशे settled.

The Vanara army having crossed the bridge of Nala by the king's order settled on the other shore that was filled with several roots and fruits.
तदद्बुतंराघवकर्मदुष्करंसमीक्ष्यदेवास्सहसिद्धचारणैः ।

उपेत्यरामसहसामहार्षिभिस्समभ्यषिञ्चन् सुशुभैर्जलैःपृथक् ।।6.2 2.86।।


देवाः gods, सिद्धचारणैः siddhas and charanas, महर्षिभिःसह including sages, अद्भुतम् wonderful, दुष्करम् most difficult, तत् that is, राघवकर्म Rama's action, समीक्ष्य seeing, सहसा at once, रामम् to Rama, उपेत्य, reached towards, सुशुभैः auspicious, जलैः water, पृथक् each one separately, तम् him, अभ्यषिञ्चन् sprinkled

At once the gods, siddhas, charanas and sages came towards Rama looking at his wonderful and most difficult action and sprinkled auspicious water on him individually. (As a mark of worship and blessing).
जयस्वशत्रून्नरदे व:मेदिनींससागरांपालयशाश्वतीस्समाः ।

इतीवरामंनरदेवसत्कृ तंशुभैर्वचोभिर्विविधैरपूजयन् ।।6.22.87।।


नरदेव god of human beings, शत्रून् enemies, जयस्व win, ससागरम् ocean, मेदिनीम् the whole land, शाश्वतीः ever, स्समाः, पालय you rule, इतीव thus, नरदेवसत्कृतम् one who is respected by human as well as gods, रामम् Rama, शुभैः be auspicious, विविधैः several, वचोभिः words, अपूजयन् worshipped.

"O Rama the Lord of human beings Let you win over enemies and rule the land for ever." Thus, hailing Rama who is worshipped by humans as well as gods, was worshipped with auspicious words (by the aforesaid gods, siddhas and charanas).
।। इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेद्वाविंशस्सर्गः ।।
This is the end of the twenty second sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
