Sloka & Translation

[The Sun god appears before Rama and sustains the construction of the bridge by Nila. Rama crosses the ocean accompanied by Lakshmana and the army.]

athōvācaraghuśrēṣṭassāgaraṅdāruṇaṅvacaḥ .

adyatvāṅśōṣayiṣyāmisapātāḷaṅmahārṇava: ।।6.22.1।।


atha and thereafter, raghuśrēṣṭa the best one among Raghu's, sāgaram to ocean, dāruṇam terrific, vacaḥ words, uvāca uttered, mahārṇava ocean, adya now, sapātāḷam that under world, tvām you, śōṣayiṣyāmi will make it dry.

Thereafter, Rama uttered, "I shall make you dry up to the underworld", to the ocean that made his terrific presence.
śaranirdagdhatōyasyapariśuṣkasyasāgara: .

mayāśōṣitasattvasyapāṅsurutpadyatēmahān ।।6.22.2।।


sāgara O ocean, mayā by me, śaranirdagdatōyasya water dried up by the arrows, pariśuṣkasya when it is dried up, śōṣitasattvasya dried up to the core, mahān huge, sāṅsuḥ sand, utpadyatē will appear.

"O Ocean! When your water is dried up to the core by my arrows, huge sand will appear."
matkārmukavisṛṣṭēvaśaravarṣēṇasāgara .

pāraṅtē.dyagamiṣyantipadabhirēvaplavaṅgamāḥ ।।6.22.3।।


sāgara O Ocean, matkārmukavisṛṣṭēna all the creatures inhabiting you, śaravarṣēṇa by the rain of arrows, plavaṅgamāḥ monkeys, padabhirēva to the other side of the shore, paraṅadya now to the other, gamiṣyanti will go.

"O Ocean, now the monkeys will go to the other side of the shore on your drying up with all the creatures inhabiting you by the rain of arrows showered by me."
vicinvannābhijānāsipauruṣaṅnāpivikramam .

dānavālayasantāpaṅmattōnādhigamiṣyasi ।।6.22.4।।


dānavālaya abode of demons, vicinvan abode, pauruṣam valour, nābhijānāsi, not known, vikramamapi even prowess, na not, mattaḥ mine, santāpam sorrow, gamiṣyasināma will face from me.

"You, who are the abode of demons are not aware of my valour and prowess. You are not aware of the sorrow that you will face from me."
brāhmēṇāstrēṇasaṅyōjyabrahmadaṇḍanibham śaram .

saṅyōjyadhanuṣiśrēṣṭhavicakarṣamahābalaḥ ।।6.22.5।।


mahābalaḥ strong, brahmadaṇḍanibham resembling the rod of punishment of the creator, Brahma, śaram arrow, brāhmēṇaastrēṇa energized by Brahma, saṅyōjya stretched, śrēṣṭhē best one, dhanuṣi by the bow, saṅyōjya stretched, vicakarṣa released.

Rama proceeded to stretch the mighty bow that resembled the rod of punishment of Brahma energized by Brahma and released that best of bows.
tasminvivikṛṣṭēsahasārāghavēṇaśarāsanē .

rōdasīsampaphālēvaparvatāścacakampirē ।।6.22.6।।


tasmin by that, śarāsanē arrows from the bow, rāghavēṇa by Rama, vikṛṣṭē pulled out, sahasā at once, rōdasī from the sky, sampaphālēna to the earth, parvatāśca even mountains, cakampirē trembled.

When Rama released the arrows from the bow, at once the sky to the earth including mountains trembled.
tamaścalōkamāvratēdiśaścavacakāśirē .

praticukṣubhirēcāśusarāṅsisaritastathā ।।6.22.7।।


tadā then, tamaśca by darkness, lōkam world, avratē engulfed, diśaśca even the directions, nacakāśirē not noticeable, cāśasarāṅsisaritaḥ Furthermore rivers, praticukṣubhirē got agitated.

Then darkness engulfed the world, the directions were not noticeable and further the rivers were agitated.
tiryakcasahānēkṣatraissaṅgataucandrabhāskarau .

bhāskarāṅśubhirādīptaṅtamasācasamāvṛtam ।।6.22.8।।

cakāśētadākāśamulkāśatavidīpitam .

antarikṣāccanirghātānirjagulasvanāḥ ।।6.22.9।।


candrabhāskarau the Sun and moon, nakṣatrēḥsaha with stars, tiryak obliquely, saṅgatau moved, bhāskarāṅśubhiḥ even the Sun light, ādīptam not shining, tamasāca on account of darkness, samāvṛtam engulfed all over, tat then, ākāśam sky, ulkāśata by the meteors, vidīpitam again lighted, pracakāśē shone, antarikṣāt from the sky, atulasvanāḥ unparalleled, nirghātāḥ thunder, nirjagmuḥ shot forth.

The Sun and moon moved obliquely (from south to North) along with the stars. On account of the darkness that covered even the sun was not shining. The sky lighted by the meteors shone and unparalleled thunder shot forth.
vapusphuruścaghanādivyādivimārutapaṅ khkayaḥ .

babhañjacatadāvṛkṣānjaladānudvahannapiḥ ।।6.22.10।।


divyamārutapaṅ khkayaḥ terrific wind blew, vapusphuruścaghanādivyādi breaking forth the clouds, tadā then, jaladān abode of cold water, udvahan taking away in upward direction, apiḥ even, vṛkṣān trees, babhañjaca broke into.

Then terrific wind blew breaking forth the clouds, which is an abode of cold water, taking them away in upward direction breaking trees.
arujaṅścainaśailāgrāśanikharāṇibabhañjanaḥ .

divispṛśōmahamēghāssaṅgatāssamahāsvanāḥ ।।6.22.11।।

mumucurvaidyutānanagīṅstēmahāśanayastadā .


śailāgrān mountain peaks, arujan ca sounding, śikharāṇi tops, babhañjaca breaking, mahāmēdhā huge cloud, divi sky, saṅgatāḥ collecting together, mahāsvanāḥ having extraordinary speed, vaidyutān fire of lightning, anagīn from the sky, mumucuḥ clouds, tadā then, tē those, mahāśanayaḥ loud sound.

Huge clouds collected were moving at extraordinary speed in the sky breaking mountain peaks. Those clouds in the sky sent forth fire of lightning making a loud sound.
yānibhūtānidṛśyānicukruśuścāśanēsamam ।।6.22.12।।

adṛśyānicabhūtānimumucurbhairavasvanam .

śiśiyarēcābhibhūtānisantrastāmyadvijantica ।।6.22.13।।

sampravivyathirēcāpivacapaspandirēbhayāt .


dṛśyāni that which could be seen, yāni those, bhūtāni creatures, āśanēsamam remained still, cukuśruḥ suffering pain, adṛśyāni that which are seen, bhūtānica beings also, bhairavasvan like the devils and ghosts, mumucuḥ clouds, abhibhūtāni few other creatures, santrastāni from their place, udvijantica came to appear, śiśiyarēca even though cold, sampravivyathirēcāpi although were together, bhayāt in fear, nacapaspandirē were even thrown off.

The creatures like humans etc. That could be seen and those that could not be seen like devils and ghosts remained still out of fear. Few other creatures came out of their place even though it was cold. Some were thrown off from their habitation in fear although they were together.
sahābhūtaissatōyōrmissanāgassaharākṣasaḥ ।।6.22.14।।

sahasā.bhūttatōvēgābadīmavēgōmahōdadhiḥ .

yōjanaṅvyaticakrāmavēlāmanyatrasamlpavāt ।।6.22.15।।


tataḥ thereafter, satōyōrmiḥ those waves of water, sahābhūtai with its creatures, sanāgaḥ with serpents, saharākṣasaḥ with the demons, mahōdadhi great ocean, sahasā at once, bhīmavēgaḥ at terrific speed, abhūt unprecedented, vēgāt speed, samlpavāt thrown out, anyatravēlām by the other tides, yōjanam one yojana, vyaticakrāma was thrown.

There after those waves of water with its creatures, serpents and demons were at once thrown off at terrific speed that was unprecedented. They were thrown beyond a yojana by the high tides.
taṅtadāsamatikrāntaṅnāticakrāmarāghavaḥ .

samuddhatamamitraghnōrāmōnadanadīpatim ।।6.22.16।।


rāghavaḥ Rama, amitraghnaḥ destroyer of foes, rāmaḥ Rama, tadā then, samatikrāntam transgressing, samuddhatam overweening, tam them, nadanadīpatim Lord of rivers, nāticakrāma not go far.

Rama the destroyer of foes did not attempt at the ocean that went far from the boundary, which was transgressing and overweening.
tatōmathyātsamudrasyasāgarassvayamutthitaḥ .

udayan himahāśailānmērōrivadivākaraḥ ।।6.22.17।।


tataḥ then, mahāmērōḥ over the mighty Meru, udayaṅ rising, divākaraḥiva like the Sun, sāgaraḥ Lord of ocean, samudrasya ocean's, madhyāt middle, svayam himself, utthitaḥ risen.

Then Sagara, the Lord of the ocean himself rising like the Sun over the mighty Meru Mountain rose from the middle of the ocean.
pannagaissahadīptāsyaissamudraḥpratyadṛśyata .

snigdhavaiḍhūryasaṅkāśōjāmbūnadavibhūṣaṇaḥ ।।6.22.18।।


snigdhavaidūryasaṅkāśaḥ bright like Vaidurya stone, jambūnadavibhūṣaṇaḥ decked in pure gold, samudraḥ Lord of the ocean, dīptāsyaiḥ as though blazing, pannagairaktamālyāssaha with serpents, pradṛśyata appeared.

Then the Lord of the Ocean shining like the Vaidurya stone decked in pure gold as if blazing appeared along with serpents.
raktamālyāmbaradharaḥpadmapatranibhēkṣaṇaḥ .

sarvapuṣpamayīṅdivyāṅśirasādhārayan srajam ।।6.22.19।।

jātarūpamayaiścaivatapanīyavibhūṣitaiḥ .

ātmajānāṅcaratnānāṅbhūṣitōbhūṣaṇōttamaiḥ ।।6.22.20।।

dhātubhirmaṇḍitaśśailōvividhairhimavāniva .

ēkāvalīmadhyagataṅtaralaṅpāṭalaprabham ।।6.22.21।।

vipulēnōrasā bibhratkaustubhasya sahōdaram .

aghūrṇitataraṅgaughaḥkālikānilasaṅgulaḥ ।।6.22.22।।

gaṅgāsindupradhānanābhirāpagābhissamāvṛtaḥ .

dēvatānāṅsarūpābhirnānārūpābhirīśvaraḥ ।।6.22.23।।

sāgarassamupakramyapūrvamāmnatyaravīryavān .

abravītprāñjalirvākyaṅrāghavaṅśarapāṇinam ।।6.22.24।।


ratktamālyāmbaradharaḥ clad in red coloured robes, padmapatranibhēkṣaṇaḥ whose eyes were like lotus petals, śirasā on the head, sarvapuṣpamayīm wearing different kinds of flowers, divyām wonderful, prajam wreath, dhārayan wearing, jātarūpamayaiścaiva of polished gold, tapanīyavibhūṣaṇaiḥ decked in shining ornaments, ātmajānām from his own territory, ratnānām precious gems, bhūṣaṇōttamaiḥ best of ornaments, bhūṣitaḥ decked, maṇḍitaḥ with different kinds of minerals, himanān śailaḥiva resembled the Himalaya mountain, ēkāvalīmadhyagatam in the midst of pearl necklace on his bosom, pāṇḍaraprabham shedding white lustre, kaustubhasyasahōdaram resembling Kausthuba (a precious jewel with emerald gem worn by Lord Vishnu), taralam hanging necklace, vipulēna broad, upasā near, bibhrat moving, aghūrṇitataraṅgaughaḥ with several tides rising up, kālikānilasaṅkulaḥ with multitude of tides touching the of clouds, dēvatānām goddesses, sarūpābhi forms also, nānārūpābhiḥ of diverse forms, gaṅgāsindupradhānābhiḥ Ganga and Sindhu, such important rivers, āpagābhiḥ coming near, samāvṛtaḥ surrounded by, īśvaraḥ Lord, vīryavān valiant one, sāgaraḥ Sagara, samupakramya all coming near, pūrvam first, āmnatyara greeting, prāñjaliḥ with folded hand s, śarapāṇinam one who held the arrow, rāghavam to Rama, vākyam these words, abravīt spoke.

Clad in red coloured robes, endowed with lotus petal like eyes having a wonderful wreath of diverse flowers on head, decked in shining ornaments of polished gold encrusted with precious gems from his own territory, he resembled the Himalayan Mountain with minerals. He had a hanging pearl necklace in the centre of his bosom shedding white lustre that resembled the Kausthuba of Lord Vishnu. With several tides moving near, and multitude of tides reaching the clouds threatening, surrounded by Goddesses of several forms and deities of important rivers like Ganga and Sindhu, the valiant Lord of the ocean greeted with folded palms and spoke these words to Rama who was wielding an arrow in his hand.
pṛthivīvāyurākāśamāpōjyōtiścarāghava: .

svabhāvēsaumya tiṣṭhantiśāśvataṅmārgamāśritāḥ ।।6.22.25।।


saumya noble, rāghava Rama, pṛthivī earth, vāyuḥ wind, ākāśam space, āpaḥ water, jyōtiśca fire, śāśvatam permanent, mārgam path, āśritāḥ following, svabhāvē its nature, tiṣṭhanti remain.

"Noble Rama! Earth, wind, space, water, and fire, the five elements remain in their path strictly following their nature."
tatsvabhāvōmamāpyēṣayadagādhō.hamaplavaḥ .

vikārastubhavēdgādhaētattēpravadāmyaham ।।6.22.26।।


tat that, aham I, agādhaḥ fathomless, aplavaḥitayat as such not capable of swimming out, ēṣaḥ so, mamāpi mine too, svabhāvaḥ nature, gādhaḥtu fording, vikāraḥ deviation, bhavēt will be, ētat as such, tē to you, pravadāmi I proclaim

"I am fathomless and as such not capable of being swum across as it is my nature too. My fording will be a deviation. I proclaim to you (how you can cross)."
nakāmānnacalōbhādvānabhayātatsāpārthivātmaja: .

grāhanakākulajalaṅstambayēyaṅkathañjana ।।6.22.27।।


pārthivātmaja O Lord of the land, grāhanakākulajalam infested by poisonous animals, kāmāt out of desire, kathaṅcana in any case, stambayēyam solidify water, lōbhādvā out of covetousness, bhayāt out of fear, na not.

"O Lord of the land! Out of desire or covetousness or even out of fear I will not be able to solidify the water infested with poisonous animals."
vidhāsyērāma: yēnāpiviṣahiṣyēhyahaṅtathā .

nagrāhāprahariṣyantiyāvatsēnātariṣyati ।।6.22.28।।

harīṇāṅtaraṇērāmakariṣyāmiyathāsthalam .


rāma O Rama, aham I, yēnāpi by means of which, tathā so also, vidhāsyē in such a mode, harīṇām by the Vanaras, taraṇē to cross over, sthalam base, yatrā passage, kariṣyāmi I will do, tathā and similarly, viṣahiṣyē the poisonous creatures, sēnā army, yāvat total, taraṣyati crosses over, grāhāḥ seizing, naprahariṣyanti will not be of aggressive nature.

"O Rama! I shall arrange a base in such a mode, by means of which the entire army of Vanaras can cross over the passage and I will also be seizing the poisonous animals and not be aggressive."
tamabravīttadārāmaḥudyatōhinadīpatē .

amōghō.yaṅmahābāṇaḥkasmin dēśēnipātyatām ।।6.22.29।।


tadā then, rāmaḥ Rama, tam , abravīt said, varuṇālayā abode of Varuna, mē my, śṛṇu listen, amōghaḥ unfailing, āyam this, mahābāṇaḥ mighty arrow, kasmin in which, dēśē location, nipātyatām should it be allowed to descend down.

Then Rama said, "O abode of Varuna, listen to me. In which location should I allow this unfailing mighty arrow to descend?"
rāmasyavacanaṅśrutvātaṅcadṛṣṭavāmahāśaram .

mahōdadhirmahātējārāghavaṅvākyamabravīt ।।6.22.30।।


mahātējāḥ brilliant one, mahōdadhiḥ great ocean, rāmasya Rama's, vacanam words, śrutvā on hearing, tam his, mahāśaram mighty arrow, dṛṣṭavāca seeing at, rāghavam Rama, vākyam this words, abravīt spoke.

On hearing the question of Rama, the mighty ocean seeing the brilliant arrow spoke these words to him.
uttarēṇāvakāśō.stikaścitpuṇyatamōmama .

drumakulyaitikhyātōlōkēyathābhavān ।।6.22.31।।


bhavān you, yathā like, lōkē region, khyātaḥ famous, drumakulyaḥiti called Drumakulya, puṇyataraḥ a holy place, kaścit a little, avakāśaḥ there is scope for you, mama to my, uttarēṇa north, asti will be.

"To my north there is a holy place called Drumakulya, famous like you, and you have scope to act there (to descend the arrow)."
ugradarśanakarmāṇōbahavastatradasyavaḥ .

ābhīrapramukhāḥpāpāḥpibantisalilaṅmama ।।6.22.32।।


tatra there, ugradarśanakarmāṇaḥ marauders of terrific action, pāpāḥ sinful, ābhīrapramukhāḥ chief of Abhiras, bahavaḥ many, dasyavaḥ enemies of gods, mama my, salilam waters, pibanti drinking.

"Marauders of terrific action, who are enemies of gods whose chief is Abhiras, live there drinking my (ocean) water performing sinful acts."
taistusaṅsparśanaṅpāpairnasahēpāpakarmabhiḥ .

amōghaḥkriyatāṅrāma: tatratēṣuśarōttamaḥ ।।6.22.33।।


rāma Rama, pāpakarmabhiḥ sinful actions also, taiḥ those, pāpaiḥ sinners, tat that, sparśanam their touch, nasahēyam I do not tolerate, śarōttamaḥ mighty arrow, tatra there tēṣu by that amōghaḥ unfailing, kriyatām can be released on them.

"Rama! I cannot tolerate the touch of ones who are sinful in action. Therefore your (of descending this arrow down) mighty unfailing arrow can be released on them."
tasyatadvacanaṅśrutvāsāgarasyarāghavaḥ .

mumōcataṅśaraṅdīptaṅvīrassāgaradarśanāt ।।6.22.34।।


mahātmanaḥ great self, tasyasāgarasya that Sagara's, tat those, vacanam words of request, śrutvā hearing, sāgaradarśanāt on account of seeing the Sagara, dīptam glowing, param supreme, taṅśaram that arrow, mumōca let off.

On hearing the words of the request of Sagara and on account of seeing him, Rama let off the supreme arrow glowing (on the marauders).
tēnatanmarukāntāraṅpṛthivyākhaluviśrutam .

nipātitaśśarōyatravajrāśanisamaprabhaḥ ।।6.22.35।।


tēna by the, vajrāśanisamaprabhaḥ like that of Indra's glow, śaraḥ dart, yatra there, nipātitaḥ let down, tat that, pṛthivyām region of land, marukāntāram Marakantaram, viśrutaṅkhalu indeed was known as popularly.

By the letting down of the dart that resembled the glow of Indra that part of the land was indeed popularly known as Marakantara (Marwar and Bikaner region of Rajasthan).
nanādacatadātatravasudhāśalyapīḍitā .

tasmādbrāṇamukhāttōyamutpapātarasātalāt ।।6.22.36।।


tadā then, tatra there, śalyapīḍitā crevice by the dart, vasudhā earth, nanāda popularly known, tasmāt therefore, bāṇamukhāt by the piercing of the dart, rasātalāt from the underworld, tōyam water, utpapāta came out.

At that part of the earth that was creviced by the piercing of the dart, water came out from the underworld.
sababhūvatadākūpōvraṇaityēbhiviśrutaḥ .

satataṅcōtthitaṅtōyaṅsamudrasyēnadṛśyatē ।।6.22.37।।


tadā then, saḥ that, kūpaḥ well, vraṇaḥityēna as Vrana, viśrutaḥ popularly, babhūva came to be known, samudrasyēva like the water of the ocean, taīyam water, satatam always, utthitam springs out, dṛśyatē seen.

That well (hole created by the dart) came to be known as Vrana. The water springing out of it forever is like sea water.
avadhāraṇaśabdaścadāruṇassamapadyata .

tasmāttadbāṇanipātēnatvapaḥkukṣiṣvaśōṣayat ।।6.22.38।।


tasmāt from that, dāruṇaḥ terrific, avadhāraṇaśabdaḥ the sound that was produced, samapadyata crack caused, tadbāṇanipātēna by the act of letting off the dart, kukṣiṣu in the cavities, tvapaḥ water, aśōṣayat dried up.

A crack caused in the ground by letting off the dart produced terrific sound and by that, the water in the cavities of the ground dried up.
vikhyātaṅtriṣulōkēṣumadhukāntāramēvatat ।।6.22.39।।

mōkṣayitvātataḥkukṣiṅrāmōdaśarathātmajaḥ .

varaṅtasmaidadauvidvānmaravē.maravikramaḥ ।।6.22.40।।


marukāntāram Marukantaram, triṣu in three, lōkēṣu worlds, vikhyātam very famous, daśarathātmajaḥ Dasaratha's son, vidvān learned, amaravikramaḥ one who has the valour of gods, rāmaḥ Rama, tam those, kukṣim cavities, śōṣayitvā making dry, tasmaimaravē for that Marukantaram, varavē boon, dadau: gave.

Marukantaram is famous in the three worlds. Dasaratha's Rama, who is learned and has the valour of gods made the cavities dry and gave a boon.
paśavyaścālparōgaścaphalamūlarasāyutaḥ .

bahusnēhōbahukṣīrassugadhanirvividhauṣadhaḥ ।।6.22.41।।

ēvamētairguṇairuktōbahubhissaṅyutōmaruḥ .

rāmasyavaradānāccaśivaḥpanthābabhūvaha ।।6.22.42।।


maruḥ Maru, rāmasya Rama's, varadānāt by virtue of the boon, paśavyaśca tender grass for cows, alparōgaśca with less diseases, phalamūlarasāyutaḥ with fruits and roots and honey, bahusnēhaḥ very ideal, bahukṣīraḥ plenty of milk, sugadhaniḥ fragrant, vividhauṣadhiḥ diverse kinds of medicinal herbs, ēvam in that way, yuktaḥ suitable, ētaiḥ all these, guṇaiḥ qualities, saṅyutaḥ endowed with, śivaḥ auspicious, panthāḥ holy, babhūva became.

By virtue of Rama's boon Maru became a beautiful land with tender grass for cows, with less diseases, very ideal for fruits, roots, and juicy foods, for plenty of milk, and suitable for fragrance, diverse kinds of medicinal herbs. Endowed with these virtues it became a holy and auspicious place.
tasmin dagdhētadākukṣausamudrassaritāṅpatiḥ .

rāghavaṅsarvaśāstrajñamidaṅvacanamabravīt ।।6.22.43।।


tadā then, tasmin that, kukṣau land, dagdhē burnt, saritāṅpati Lord of rivers,, samudraḥ ocean, sarvaśāstrajñam learned in all sastras, rāghavam Rama, idam these, vacanam words, abravīt spoken.

Thereafter when that land of Drumakulyam was burnt (by Rama's arrow) the Lord of rivers looked at Rama who was learned in all sastras spoke these words.
ayaṅsaumya: nalōnāmatanayōviśvakarmaṇaḥ .

pitrādattavaraśīmānpratimōviśvakarmaṇāḥ ।।6.22.44।।


saumya noble one, śrīmān prosperous one, nalōnāma named Nala, ayam this, viśvakarmaṇaḥ by Vishwakarma's, tanayaḥ son, pitrā father, dattavaraḥ obtained boons, viśvakarmaṇaḥ in architecture, pratimaḥ equal to father.

"Noble Rama! This prosperous one named Nala is the son of Vishwakarma. Since he has obtained boons from his father, he is equal to his father in architecture."
ēṣasētuṅmahōtsāhaḥkarōtumayivānaraḥ .

tamahaṅdhārayiṣyāmiyathāhyēṣapitātathā ।।6.22.45।।


mahōtsāhaḥ full of zeal, ēṣaḥvānaraḥ this Vanara, mayi over me, sētum bridge, karōtu will built, tam him, aham I, dhārayiṣyāmi will bear, pitā father, yathā that way, ēṣaḥ he is, tathā like him.

"This monkey is full of zeal. He will build a bridge over me, and I will bear it. In that way he is like his father."
ēvamuktvōdadhirnaṣṭassamutthāyanalastadā .

abravīdvānaraśrēṣṭhōvākyaṅrāmaṅmahābalaḥ ।।6.22.46।।


udadhiḥ Sea God, ēvam in that way, uktvā having spoken, naṣṭaḥ disappeared, tadā thereafter, vānaraśrēṣṭhaḥ foremost of Vanaras, nalaḥ Nala, samutthāya getting up, mahābalaḥ mighty, rāmam at Rama, vākyam these words, abravīt spoke.

Having spoken in that way, the Sea God disappeared. Nala, the foremost of vanaras, got up there after and spoke these words to mighty Rama.
ahaṅsētuṅkariṣyāmivistīrṇēvaruṇālayē .

pitussāmarthyamāsthāyatattvamahāmahōdadhiḥ ।।6.22.47।।


aham I, pituḥ father, sāmarthyam skill, āsthāya adopting, vistīrṇē broad, varuṇālayē on the abode of Varuna, sētum bridge, kariṣyāmi will build mahōdadhiḥ ocean god, tattvam truth, āha has spoken.

ayaṅhisāgarōbhīmassētukarmadidṛkṣyāḥ .

dadaudaṇḍabhayādgādhaṅrāghavāyamahōdadhiḥ ।।6.22.48।।


bhīmaḥ fearsome, ayaṅhi I also, sāgaraḥ ocean, mahōdadhiḥ mighty ocean, daṇḍabhayāt fear of punishment, sētukarmadidṛkṣyā to witness the building of a bridge, rāghavāya to Rama, gādham place, dadau allowed a passage.

This fearsome ocean of mighty Sagara (dug by Sagara) then allowed a passage for Rama, out of fear of punishment and also to witness the building of a bridge.
mamamāturvarōdattōmandarēviśvakarmaṇā .

aurasastasyaputrō.haṅsadṛśōviśvakarmaṇā ।।6.22.49।।

nacāpyahamanuktōvaḥprabrūyāmātmanōguṇān .

samarthaścāpyahaṅsētuṅkartuṅvaivaruṇālayē ।।6.22.50।।

smāritō.smyahamētēnatattvamahāmahōdadhiḥ .

kāmamadvaivabadhnantusētuṅvānarapuṅgavāḥ ।।6.22.51।।


mandarē on Mandara mountain, viśvakarmaṇā Vishwakarmana, mamamātuḥ my mother, varaḥ boon, dattaḥ has given, aham I, tasya her, aurasaḥputraḥ born out of her body, viśvakarmaṇā Vishwakarma, sadṛśaḥ I am like him, ētēna by that, smāritaḥasmi I have put in my memory, mahōdadhiḥ great ocean, tattvam nature, āha I am aware, anuktaḥ I have not spoken, aham I, ātmanaḥ myself, guṇān qualities, vaḥ unless, naprabrūyām will not speak, aham I, varuṇālayē abode of Varuna, sētum bridge, kartum will build, samarthaścāpi am capable, kāmam required material, vānarapuṅgavāḥ Vanara leaders, adyaiva right away, sētum for the bridge, badnantu for building.

"On the Mandara mountain Vishwakarma gave a boon to my mother. I am that Vishwakarma's own son, and I am like him at work by that cause. I have put in my memory all about the ocean. I am aware of the truth of the ocean. I could not speak of my qualities unless questioned. I can build a bridge over the abode of Varuna.Right away let the Vanara leaders get the material required for building the bridge (said Nala)."
tatōvisṛṣṭārāmēṇasarvatōhariyūthapāḥ .

abhipēturmahāraṇyaṅhṛṣṭāśśatasahasraśaḥ ।।6.22.52।।


tataḥ then, rāmēṇa by Rama, visṛṣṭāḥ directed, riyūthapāḥ Vanara troop leaders, hṛṣṭāḥ gladly, śatasahasraśaḥ hundred thousand, mahāraṇyam huge forest, sarvataḥ all over, abhyutpētuḥ sprang up.

Then directed by Rama the Vanara troop leaders in hundreds and thousands sprang up gladly all over the huge forest.
tēnagānnagasaṅkāśāśśākhāmṛgagaṇarṣabhāḥ .

babhañjuḥvānarāstatrapracakarṣuścasāgaram ।।6.22.53।।


nagasaṅkāśāḥ mountain like, tē those, śākhāmṛgagaṇarṣabhāḥ bulls among Vanaras, tata there upon, nagān from the mountain, pādapān roots of trees, babhañjuḥ collected, sāgaram into the sea, pracakarṣuśca started moving.

Mountain like bodied Vanara bulls there upon started collecting roots of trees from the foot of mountain and moved them into the sea.
tēsālaiścāśvakarṇaiścadhavaiśaiścavānarāḥ .

kuṭajairarjunaistālaistilakaisntiśairapi ।।6.22.54।।

bilvakaissaptaparṇaiścakarṇikāraiścasupuṣpitaiḥ .

cūtaiścāśōkavṛkṣaiścasāgaraṅsamapūrayan ।।6.22.55।।


vānarāḥ Vanaras, sālaiśca sala trees, aśvakarṇaiśca as vakarna trees, dhavaiḥ dhava trees, vaṅśaiśca bamboo, kuṭajaiḥ kutaja, arjunaiḥ arjuna, tālaiḥ palmira, tilakaiḥ tilaka, ntiśairapi trisaira, bilvakaiḥ bilva, saptaparṇaiśca and saptaparni, puṣpitaiḥkarṇikāraiḥ karnikara blossoms, cūtaiśca mango, aśōkavṛkṣaiśca and ashoka trees, sāgaram into ocean, paryapūrayan brought and dumped.

The Vanaras brought sala, asvakarna, dhava, bamboo, kutaja arjuna, palmira, tilaka, trisaira, bilva, saptaparni trees karnikara plants with blossoms, mango trees and ashoka trees and dumped into the ocean.
samūlāṅścavimūlāṅścapādapān harisattamāḥ .

indrakētūnivōdyamyaprajahrūrvānarāstarūn ।।6.22.56।।


harisattamāḥ foremost of the Vanaras, samūlān ca along with the roots, vimūlān ca some without roots, pādapān trees, indrakētūniva like Indra's flagstaff, udyamya lifting up, prajahruḥ hurled vānarāstarūn Vanaras thrown down (into the sea)

Lifting some trees with roots and some without roots like the staff of Indra's flag, Vanaras hurled down the trees into the sea.
tāḷānadāḍimagulmāṅścanārikēḷanvibhītakān .

vakulānkadirānnimbānsamājahrussamantataḥ ।।6.22.57।।


tāḷān palmira, dāḍimagulmāṅśca dadima trees, nārikēḷavibhītakān coconut trees, karīrān karira, bakulān bakula, nimbān nimba, samantataḥ brought all of them, samājahruḥ and dropped into the ocean.

They brought palmira, dadima, coconut, karira, bakula and nimba trees and dropped all of them into the ocean.
hastimatānmahākāyāḥpāṣāṇāṅścamahābalāḥ .

parvatāṅścasamutpāṭyayanssaraiḥparivahantica ।।6.22.58।।


mahākāyāḥ of huge body, mahābālāḥ strong, hastimātrān like elephants, pāṣāṇān stones, parvatāṅśca mountains, samutpāṭya collecting and lifting up, yansraiḥ by machines, parivahantica transported.

The Vanaras of huge body size and strong like elephants collected stones and mountains, lifted them, and transported into the sea.
prakṣipyamāṇairacalaissahasājalamuddṛtam .

samutsasarpaākāśamavāsarpattatastataḥ ।।6.22.59।।


sahasā at once, prakṣipyamāṇaiḥ thrown up, acalaiḥ mountains, uddṛtam rose up, jalam water, ākāśam sky, samutsasarpa touched, tataḥ then, punaḥ again, avāsarpat spread

At once the water threw up (by dropping the mountains) rose, touching the sky and spreading.
samudraṅkṣōbhayāmāsurvānarāścassamantataḥ .

sūtrāṇyanyēpragṛhṇāntivyāyataṅśatayōjanam ।।6.22.60।।


samantataḥ all over, nipatantaḥ on account of throwing, samudram into the sea, kṣōbhayāmāsuḥ stirred up, anyē others, śatayōjanam a hundred yojanas, āyatam breadth, sūtrāṇi by rope, pragṛhṇanti held.

On account of throwing into the sea it got stirred up Others held the rope over a hundred yojanas in breadth (to make it even).
nalaścakrēmahāsētuṅmadhyēnadanadīpatēḥ .

satadākriyatēsēturvānarairghōrakarmabhiḥ ।।6.22.61।।


nalaḥ Nala, nadanadīpatēḥ Lord of rivers, madhyē centre, mahāsētum huge bridge, cakrē started, tadā then, ghōrakarmabhiḥ terrific task, vānaraiḥ with Vanaras, sētuḥ bridge, kriyatē built.

Nala started the task of building the huge bridge in the centre of the ocean with Vanaras.
daṇḍānanyēpragṛhṇantivicinvantitathāparē ।।6.22.62।।

vānaraiśśataśastatrarāmasyājñāpurassarāḥ .

mēghābhaiḥparvatāgraiścatṛṇaiḥkāṣṭhairbabandhirē ।।6.22.63।।


anyē others, daṇḍān sticks, pragṛhṇanti holding, tathā in the same way, aparē some others, vicinvanti following, rāmasya of Rama, ājñāpurassaraiḥ the command in front, śataśaḥ in hundreds, mēghābhiḥ like clouds, parvatāgraiśca like top of mountains, vānaraiḥ with Vanaras, tṛṇaiḥ reeds, kāṣṭhaiśca logs of wood, babandhirē built.

Others held sticks and some held logs of wood and reeds following the command of Rama, hundreds of Vanaras who looked like clouds and mountain tops built the bridge.
puṣpitāgraiścatarubhissētuṅbadhnantivānarāḥ .

pāṣāṇāṅścagiriprakhyāganirīṇāṅśikharāṇica ।।6.22.64।।

dṛśyantēparidhāvantōgṛhyadānavasannibhāḥ .


vānarāḥ Vanaras, puṣpitāgraiḥ trees with blossoms on top, tarubhiḥ creepers, sētum for the bridge, badhnanti binding dānavasannibhā like the Danavas, giriprakhyān like the huge mountains, pāṣāṇāṅśca boulders also, girīṇām mountains, śikharāṇica tops, gṛhya seizing, paridhāvanta running, dṛśyantē were found.

The Vanaras who were like Danavas, huge mountains in size were seen seizing boulders from the mountain, the trees with blossoms, and creepers for binding the bridge and running.
śilānāṅkṣipyamāṇānāṅśailānāṅnipātyatām .

babhūvatumulaśśabdastadātasminmahōdadhau ।।6.22.65।।


tasmin in that, mahōdadhau lofty ocean, kṣipyamāṇānāṅ hurling, śilānām mountains, tatra so also, nipātyatām by throwing, śailānām mountains, tumulaḥ tumultuous, śabdaḥ sound, tadā then, babhūva arose.

By hurling off the mountains in that lofty ocean and throwing stones, a tumultuous sound arose.
kṛtāniprathamēnāhnāyōjanānicaturdaśa .

prahṛṣṭairgajasaṅkāścaistvaramāṇaiḥplavaṅgamaiḥ ।।6.22.66।।


prahṛṣṭaiḥ rejoicing, gajasaṅkāśaiḥ elephant like, tvaramāṇaiḥ speedily, plavaṅgamaiḥ the monkeys, prathamēna first, ahnā one day, caturdhaśa fourteen, yōjanāni yojana distance, kṛtāni was built.

Elephants like monkeys rejoiced over building speedily fourteen yojanas the distance of the bridge on the first day.
dvitīyēnatathaicāhnāyōjanānituviṅśatiḥ .

kṛtāniplavagaistūrṇaṅbhīmakāyairmahābalaiḥ ।।6.22.67।।


tathaina in the same order, bhīmakāyaiḥ of fierce body, mahābalaiḥ extremely strong, plavagaiḥ Vanaras, tūrṇam soon, dvitīyēna on the second, ahnā one day, viṅśatiḥ twenty, yōjanāni yojanas, kṛtāni built.

In the same order the Vanaras of fierce bodies and extremely strong ones soon built twenty yojanas on the second day.
ahnātṛtayēnatathāyōjanānikṛtānica .

tvaramāṇairmahākāyairēkaviṅśatirēvaca ।।6.22.68।।


tathā that way, tvaramāṇaiḥ very fast, mahakāyaiḥ of huge body, tṛtīyēna on the third, ahnā one day, ēkaviṅśatirēvaca twenty one, yōjanāni yojanas, kṛtānica constructed.

Endowed with huge body that way the Vanaras built extremely fast, twenty one yojanas on the third day.
caturthēnatathācāhnādvāviṅśatirathāsivā .

yōjanānimahāvēgaiḥkṛtānitvaritastutaiḥ ।।6.22.69।।


tataḥ there upon, mahāvēgaiḥ of great speed, tvaritaiḥ at once, athāpi so also, vā and, caturdhēna on the fourth, ahnā a day, dvāviṅśatiḥ twenty two, yōjanāni yojanas, kṛtāni did.

There upon at once Vanaras of great speed built twenty two yojanas on the fourth day.
pañcamēnatathācāhnāplavagaiḥkṣiprakāribhiḥ .

yōjanānitrayōviṅśatsuvēlamadhikṛtyavai ।।6.22.70।।


tathā similarly, pañcamēna fifth day, ahnā a day, kṣiprakāribhiḥ those who were endowed with great impetus, plavagaiḥ Vanaras, suvēlam adhikṛtya crossing mount Suvela, trayōviṅśat twenty-three, yōjanāni yojanas.

Similarly, on the fifth day the Vanaras endowed with great impetus built twenty three yojanas and crossed Mount Suvela.
savānaravaraśraśīmānviśvakarmātmājōbalī .

babandhasāgarēsētuṅyathācāpyatathāpitā ।।6.22.71।।


vānaravaraḥ foremost of the Vanaras, śrīmān glorious, viśvakarmātmajaḥ son of Vishwakarma, bali strong one, saḥ he, asya his, pitā father, yathā like, tathā so also, sāgarē in the sea, sētum bridge, babandha built.

Nala the son of Vishwakarma, the foremost of the Vanaras and strong like his father built the bridge in the sea.
sanalēnakṛtassētussāgarēmakarālayē .

śuśubhēsubhagaśraśīmān svātīpathaivāmbarē ।।6.22.72।।


makarālayē abode crocodiles, sāgarē in the sea, nalēna by Nala, kṛtaḥ built, subhagaḥ auspicious, śrīmān glorious, saḥ that, sētuḥ bridge, ambarē sky, svātīpathaiva like the street of stars, śuśubhē looked.

The bridge was built on the sea, an abode of crocodiles, was auspicious, glorious, and looked like the street in space (milky path).
tatōdēvassagandharvāssiddāścaparamarṣayaḥ .

āgamyagaganētasthurdraṣṭukāmāstadadbutam ।।6.22.73।।


tataḥ then, sagandharvā the Gandharvas, dēvāḥ gods, siddāśca even siddhas, paramarṣayaḥ very happy, tat then, adbhutam it is wonderful, draṣṭukāmāḥ desiring to see that, āgamyagaganē reached the sky, tasthuḥ stationed.

The Gandharvas, gods and even siddhas felt happy and reached their stationed in the sky to see the wonderful bridge.
daśayōjanavistīrṇaṅśatayōjanamāyatam .

dadṛśurdēvagandharvānalasētuṅsuduṣkaram ।।6.22.74।।


dēvagandharvāḥ gods and Gandharvas, daśayōjanavistīrṇam ten yojanas in width, śatayōjanam hundred yojanas, āyatam in length, suduṣkaram exceedingly difficult to build, nalasētum bridge built by Nala, dadṛśuḥ witnessed.

Gods and Gandharvas witnessed the bridge built by Nala that was ten yojanas in width and hundred yojanas in length.
āplavantaḥplavantaścagarjantaścaplavaṅgamāḥ ।।6.22.75।।

tadacnityamasahyaṅcahyadbhutaṅrōmaharṣaṇam .

dadṛśussarvabhūtānisāgarēsētubandhanam ।।622.76।।


plavaṅgamāḥ monkeys, āplavantaḥ here and there jumping, plavantaśca jumping about, garjantaśca roaring, sarvabhūtāni all creatures, ācnityam that which cannot be conceived in mind, asahyaṅca impossible, adbhutam marvellous, rōmaharṣaṇam which is thrilling, sāgarē in the sea, tat that, sētubandanam bridge constructed, dadṛśuḥ witnessed.

The monkeys were jumping about here and there roaring (in joy). All creatures witnessed the bridge that was inconceivable, marvellous, thrilling, and impossible to build constructed in the sea.
tānikōṭisahasrāṇivānarāṇāṅmahaujasām .

badhnantassāgarēsētuṅjugmuḥpāraṅmahōdadhēḥ ।।6.22.77।।


mahaujasām the glorious, vānarāṇām Vanaras, tāni those, kōṭisahasrāṇi thousands of crores, sāgarē sea, sētum bridge, badhnantaḥ constructed, mahōdadhēḥ from the great ocean, pāram other side, jagmuḥ reached.

The glorious Vanaras in thousands of crores reached the other side of the sea from the bridge constructed in the great sea.
viśālassukṛtaśraśīmān subhūmissusamāhitaḥ .

aśōbhatamahān sētussīmantaivasāgarē ।।6.22.78।।


viśālaḥ broad, sukṛtaḥ well built, śrīmān magnificent, subhūmiḥ extensive, susamāhitaḥ smooth/even without ups and downs, mahān huge, sētuḥ bridge, sāgarē in the sea, sīmantaivaaśōbhata was charming like the partition in the woman's hair.

That huge bridge was well built, magnificent, evenly built, and extensive and looked charming like the partition in a woman's hair.
tataḥpārēsamudrasyagadāpāṇirvibhīṣaṇaḥ .

parēṣāmabhighātārthamatiṣṭhatsacivaissahā ।।6.22.79।।


tataḥ there upon, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, gadāpāṇiḥ holder of mace, parēṣām enemies, abhighātārtham to slay the aforesaid, sacivaiḥsahā along with friends, samudrasya from the ocean, pārē other side, atiṣṭhat stayed.

There upon Vibheeshana holding the mace stood on the other side of the ocean along with his friends to slay the enemies.
sugrīvastutataḥprāharāmaṅsatyaparākramam .

hanūmantaṅtvamārōhaaṅgadaṅcāpilakṣmaṇaḥ ।।6.22.80।।

ayaṅhivipulōvīrasāgarōmakarālayaḥ .

vaihāyapauyuvāmētauvānarautārayiṣyataḥ ।।6.22.81।।


tataḥ then, sugrīvastu Sugriva also, satyaparākramam one of truthful valour, rāmam Rama, prāha mount, vīra heroic, makarālayaḥ home of crocodiles, ayam this, ārōha climbing, atha and so, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, tvam you, hanūmantam Hanuman's, hi will do, aṅgadam Angada, ētau like that, vānarau Vanaras, vaihāyasau to the sky, yuvām hold up both, tārayiṣyataḥ will assist to cross.

Sugriva addressed Rama of truthful valour and said, "You mount on heroic Hanuman, let Lakshmana climb on Angada. These Vanaras will hold you up in the sky and assist you to cross the ocean."
agratastasyasainyasyaśrīmānrāmassalakṣmaṇaḥ .

jagāmadhanvīdharmātmāsugrīvēṇasamanvitaḥ ।।6.22.82।।


salakṣmaṇaḥ accompanied by Lakshmana, śrīmān glorious, dharmātmā righteous, rāmaḥ Rama, sugrīvēṇa with Sugriva, samanvitaḥ joining together, dhanvī wielder of bow, tasyasainyasya his army, agrataḥ in front, jagāma proceeded.

Accompanied by Lakshmana and joined together with Sugriva, glorious and righteous Rama walked in front of the army.
nyēmadhyēnagacchantipārśvatō.nyēplavaṅgamāḥ .

salilaṅprapatantanyēmārgamanyēnalēbhirē ।।6.22.83।।

kēcidvaihāyasagatāssuparṇāivapupluvuḥ .


anyē others, plavaṅgamāḥ monkeys, madhyēnagacchanti going in the middle, anyē some others, pārśvataḥ in the side, anyē some others, salilam water, prapatanti falling down (having no space to walk), anyē some others, mārgam path, nalēbhirē on the shore, kēcit a few, vaihāyasagatāḥ through the path of sky, suparṇāḥiva like birds, pupluvuḥ went.

While some monkeys walked in the middle some went in the side, some others were falling down in water (for the want of space to walk) some others went like birds in the path of the sky.
ghōṣēṇamahatātasyasindhōrghōṣaṅsamucchritam .

bhīmantardadhēbhīmātarantīharivāhinī ।।6.22.84।।


tarantī by the advancement, bhīmā frightening, harivāhinī army troops of monkeys, mahatā massive, ghōṣēṇa by the loud noise, samucchritam risen, bhīmam terrific, tasya its sindhōḥ of the ocean, ghōṣam sound, antardhadhē drowned.

The terrific sound caused by the frightening advancement of massive monkey troops the sound of the ocean got drowned.
vānarāṇāṅhisātīrṇāvāhinīnalasētunā .

tīrēniviviśērājñābahumūlaphalōdakē ।।6.22.85।।


nalasētunā the bridge of Nala, tīrṇā having reached, vānarāṇām Vanaras, sā that, vāhinī, army rājñā by the king, bahumūlaphalōdakē filled with several roots and fruits, tīrē shore, niviviśē settled.

The Vanara army having crossed the bridge of Nala by the king's order settled on the other shore that was filled with several roots and fruits.
tadadbutaṅrāghavakarmaduṣkaraṅsamīkṣyadēvāssahasiddhacāraṇaiḥ .

upētyarāmasahasāmahārṣibhissamabhyaṣiñcan suśubhairjalaiḥpṛthak ।।6.2 2.86।।


dēvāḥ gods, siddhacāraṇaiḥ siddhas and charanas, maharṣibhiḥsaha including sages, adbhutam wonderful, duṣkaram most difficult, tat that is, rāghavakarma Rama's action, samīkṣya seeing, sahasā at once, rāmam to Rama, upētya, reached towards, suśubhaiḥ auspicious, jalaiḥ water, pṛthak each one separately, tam him, abhyaṣiñcan sprinkled

At once the gods, siddhas, charanas and sages came towards Rama looking at his wonderful and most difficult action and sprinkled auspicious water on him individually. (As a mark of worship and blessing).
jayasvaśatrūnnaradē va:mēdinīṅsasāgarāṅpālayaśāśvatīssamāḥ .

itīvarāmaṅnaradēvasatkṛ taṅśubhairvacōbhirvividhairapūjayan ।।6.22.87।।


naradēva god of human beings, śatrūn enemies, jayasva win, sasāgaram ocean, mēdinīm the whole land, śāśvatīḥ ever, ssamāḥ, pālaya you rule, itīva thus, naradēvasatkṛtam one who is respected by human as well as gods, rāmam Rama, śubhaiḥ be auspicious, vividhaiḥ several, vacōbhiḥ words, apūjayan worshipped.

"O Rama the Lord of human beings! Let you win over enemies and rule the land for ever." Thus, hailing Rama who is worshipped by humans as well as gods, was worshipped with auspicious words (by the aforesaid gods, siddhas and charanas).
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēdvāviṅśassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the twenty second sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
