Sloka & Translation

[ Applauding the splendour of Lanka, Rama asks Lakshmana to see the beauty of the gardens and palaces. Rama asks Suka to be released. Suka returns to Ravana and describes Ramas army.]

sāvīrasamitīrājñāvirarājavyavasthitā .

śaśināśubhanakṣatrāpaurṇamāsīvaśāradī ।।6.24.1।।


vyavasthitā settled, sā that, vīrasamitiḥ army of Vanaras, rājñā by the king (Rama), śubhanakṣatrā with auspicious stars, śāradī autumn, paurṇamāsī full moon, śaśināiva like the moon, virarāja shone.

The army of Vanaras settled that way by Rama's command shone like the autumnal full moon with auspicious stars.
pracacālacavēgēnatrastācaivavasundharā .

pīḍyamānābalaughēnatēnasāgaravarcasā ।।6.24.2।।


sāgaravarcasā like the ocean, tēna by that, balaughēna the army, pīḍyamānā tormented by, vasundharā the earth, vēgēna swift movement, trastā frightened, pracacāla started shaking.

The frightened army (of Vanaras) that was like a tormented ocean started moving swiftly, shaking like the earth.
tataśśuśruvurākruṣṭaṅlaṅkāyāṅkānanaukasaḥ .

bhērīmṛdaṅgasaṅghuṣṭaṅtumulaṅrōmaharṣaṇam ।।6.24.3।।


tataḥ there upon, kānanaukasaḥ army having settled, laṅkāyāṅ from Lanka, ākruṣṭam terrific, tumulam tumultuous, rēmaharṣaṇam that which causes horripilation, bhērīmṛdaṅgasaṅghuṣṭam drums and percussion instruments, śuśruvuḥ came to hear.

There upon having settled down, the army hordes heard from Lanka terrific and tumultuous noise of drums and percussion instruments that caused horripilation.
babhūvustēnaghōṣēṇasaṅhṛṣṭāhariyūthapāḥ .

amṛṣyamāṇāstaṅghōṣaṅvinēdurghōṣavattaram ।।6.24.4।।


hariyūthapāḥ leaders of Vanara troops, tēna of that (Lanka), ghōṣēṇa by the loud noises, saṅhṛṣṭāḥ felt very happy, babhūvuḥ became, tam that which, ghōṣam noise, amṛṣyamāṇāḥ unable to tolerate, ghōṣavattaram louder than the noise, vinēduḥ roared in joy.

The leaders of Vanara troops felt very happy at the noise from (Lanka) which they were unable to tolerate and roared louder (than that in joy).
rākṣasāstuplavaṅgānāṅśuśruvuścā.pigarjitam .

nardatāmivadṛptānāṅmēghānāmambarēsvanam ।।6.24.5।।


rākṣasāḥapi even the Rakshasas, dṛptānām in their pride, plavaṅganām the Vanaras, ambarē in the sky, nardatām bellowing, mēghānām clouds, svanam iva like the sound, garjitam roared, śuśruvuḥca heard.

Even the Rakshasas heard the roaring of Vanaras in their pride that was bellowing like that of clouds in the sky.
dṛṣṭavādāśarathirlaṅkāṅcitradhvajapatākinīm .

jagāmamanasāsītaṅdūyamānēnacētasā ।।6.24.6।।


dāśaradhiḥ Rama the son of Dasaratha, citradhvajapatākinīm adored with colourful flags and posts, laṅkām of Lanka, dṛṣṭavā seeing, dūyamānēna afflicted by sorrow, cētasā thinking, sītām of Sita, manasā in his mind, jagāma went about.

Afflicted by sorrow upon seeing the colourful flags and posts of Lanka even Rama's thoughts went about thinking of Sita.
atrasāmṛgaśābākṣīrāvaṇēnōparudhyatē .

abhibhūtāgrahēṇēvalōhitāṅgēnarōhiṇī ।।6.24.7।।


mṛgaśābākṣī dove-eyed, sā she, lōhitāṅgēna red colour bodied planet (Mars), grahēṇava caught by, abhibhūtā conquered, rōhiṇīva like Rohini, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, atra there, uparudhyatē obstructed.

The dove-eyed Sita is obstructed by Ravana there (at Lanka) like the planet Rohini is caught by the red coloured planet (Mars).
dīrghamuṣṇaṅcaniśvasyasamudvīkṣyacalakṣmaṇam .

uvācavacanaṅvīrastatkālahitamātmanaḥ ।।6.24.8।।


vīraḥ heroic one, dīrgham long, uṣṇaṅca hot, niśvasya heaving, lakṣmaṇam to Lakshmana, samudvīkṣyaca and looking at, ātmanaḥ himself, tātkālahitam that which is good at that time, vacanam words, uvāca spoke.

Heroic Rama heaving hot and long breath looking at Lakshmana spoke these words that were good for him at that time.
ālikhantīmivākāśamutthitāṅpaśyalakṣmaṇa .

manasēvakṛtāṅlaṅkāṅnagāgrēviśvakarmaṇā ।।6.24.9।।


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, viśvakarmaṇā by Vishwakarma, nagāgrē on top of the mountain, manasā with mind, kṛtām iva like the one created, utthitām elevated, ākāśam sky, ālikhantīm as if clasping, laṅkām Lanka, paśya you may see.

"Lakshmana, you may see the city of Lanka elevated on top of the mountain as though clasping the sky, like the one created in the mind of Vishwakarma."
vimānairbahubhirlaṅkāsaṅkīrṇābhuvirājatē .

viṣṇōḥpadamivākāśaṅchāditaṅpāṇḍubhirghanaiḥ ।।6.24.10।।


bhuvi existing, rājatē appears splendid, laṅkā Lanka, bahubhi with many, vimānaiḥ tall skyscrapers, saṅkīrṇā mass of, viṣṇōḥ of Vishnu's, padam path, ākāśam the sky, pāṇḍubhiḥ with white, ghanaiḥ clouds, chāditam iva as if covered.

"This Lanka appears splendid with a mass of skyscrapers like white clouds covering the path of Vishnu in the sky."
puṣpitaiśśōbhitālaṅkāvanaiścatrarathōpamaiḥ .

nānāpatagasaṅghuṣṭai: phalapuṣpōpagaiśśubhaiḥ ।।6.24.11।।


laṅkā Lanka, nānāpatagasaṅghuṣṭai: with flocks of bird of several kinds singing sweetly phalapuṣpōpagaiḥ with charming flowers and fruits, śubhaiḥ auspicious (gardens), puṣpitaiḥ decorated with flowers, citrarathōpamaiḥ like the Chaitraratha, vanaiḥ gardens, śōbhitā delighting.

"Lanka is filled with flocks of birds of several kinds singing sweetly, the gardens with charming flowers and fruits are delighting like auspicious gardens of Chaitrara, the garden of Kubera, the god of wealth."
paśyamattavihāṅgānipralīnabhramarāṇica .

kōkilākulaṣaṇḍānidōdhavītiśivō.nilaḥ ।।6.24.12।।


śivaḥ pleasant, anilaḥ breeze, mattavihaṅgāni inhabited by proud birds pralīnabhramarāṇīca drunken honeybees, kōkilākulaṣaṇḍāni crowded with cuckoos and other birds, dōdhavīti shaking violently, paśya you may see (said Rama to Lakshmana).

"You may see the trees shaking violently by the pleasant breeze, inhabited by proud birds, drunken honeybees and crowded with cuckoos and other birds (Rama said to Lakshmana)."
itidāśarathīrāmōlakṣmaṇaṅsamabhāṣata .

balaṅcatadvaivibhajan śāstradṛṣṭēnakarmaṇā ।।6.24.13।।


dāśarathiḥ Dasaratha's, rāmaḥ Rama, itilakṣmaṇam thus to Lakshmana, samabhāṣata talked, tadvai in that manner, śāstradṛṣṭēna in accordance with what is said in sastras, karmaṇā the task, balaṅ army, vibhajaccha and divide.

Dasaratha's son Rama thus talked to Lakshmana in that manner and asked to divide the task of the army in accordance with what is said in sastras.
śaśāsakapisēnāyāṅbalamādāyavīryavān .

aṅgadassahanīlēnatiṣṭhēdurasidurjayaḥ ।।6.24.14।।


śaśāsa terror for the enemies, vīryavān valiant one, durjayaḥ one who is difficult to win over, aṅgadaḥ Angada, balāt with his army, tām those, kapisēnāyām army of Vanaras, ādāya taking, nīlēnasaha along with Nila, urasi heart (central place), tiṣṭhēt remain.

Let the valiant Angada who is difficult to win over, who is a terror to the enemies, take the army along with Nila and remain at the centre (of the army structure).
tiṣṭhēdvānaravāhinyāvānaraughasamāvṛtaḥ .

āśrityadakṣiṇaṅpārśvamṛṣabhōvānararṣabha:।। 6.24.15।।


ṛṣabhōvānararṣabha: Rshaba a bull among Vanaras, vānaraughasamāvṛtaḥ accompanied by his troop of Vanaras, vānaravāhinyāḥ Vanara contingent, dakṣiṇam south, pārśvam side, āśritaḥ approaching, tiṣṭhēt remain.

Let Rshaba the bull among Vanaras approach the south side of the army accompanied by his troop of Vanara contingent and remain there.
gandhahastīvadurdharṣastarasvīgandhamādanaḥ .

tiṣṭhēdvānaravāhinyāssavyaṅpārśvaṅsamāśrita:।। 6.24.16।।


gandhahastīva like a proud elephant, durdharṣaḥ difficult to conquer, tarasvī strong one, gandhamādanaḥ Gandhamadana, vānaravāhinyāḥ Vanara battalion, savyaṅpārśvam right side, samāśritaḥ assemble, tiṣṭhēt remain.

"Let the mighty Gandhamadana, a difficult one to conquer like a proud elephant, take the battalion of army and stay on the right side"
mūrdhnisthāsyāmyahaṅyuktōlakṣmaṇēnasamanvitaḥ .

jāmbavāṅścasuṣēṇaścavēgadarśīcavānaraḥ ।।6.24.17।।

ṛkṣamukhyāmahātmānaḥkukṣiṅrakṣantutētrayaḥ .


aham myself, lakṣmaṇēna along with Lakshmana, samanvitaḥ alert, yukta: appropriate, mūrdhni at the head, sthāsyāmi will remain, jāmbavāṅśca Jambavan and also, suṣēṇaśca Sushena, vānaraḥ Vanaras, vēgadarśīca quick at sighting, mahātmānaḥ great ones, tē those, trayaḥ three, ṛkṣamukhyāḥ chiefs of Bears, kukṣim the belly part, rakṣantu remain protecting.

"I and Lakshmana will be alert at the head side. Let Jambavan Sushena and the three chiefs of Bears who are strong and quick at sighting remain protecting the belly of the army."
jaghanaṅkapisēnāyāḥkapirājō.bhirakṣatu .

paścārdhamivalōkasyapracētāstējasāvṛtaḥ ।।6.24.18।।


tējasā brilliant, āvṛtaḥ covered, pracētāḥ Pracheta, lōkasya world's, paścārdhamiva as if ruling the west, kapirājaḥ king of Vanaras, kapisēnāyāḥ Vanara army's, jagham hips and loins, abhirakṣu let him protect.

"Just as Pracheta who is covered by brilliance, rules the western side of the world, let the king of Vanaras protect the hips and loin portion of the Vanara army."
suvibhaktamahāvyūhāmahāvānararakṣitā .

anīkinīsāvibabhauyathādyaussābhrasamplavā ।।6.24.19।।


suvibhaktamahāvyūhā organized that way in the protection of Vanaras, mahāvānararakṣitā protected the army of Vanaras, sāanīkinī that army force, sābhrasamplavā mass of clouds, dyauḥiva like the heavens vibabhau shone.

The Vanara army force organized that way to protect the Vanaras, shone like the mass of clouds in heaven.
pragṛhyagiriśṛṅgāṇimahātaścamahīruhan .

laṅkāṅvimardayiṣavōraṇē ।।6.24.20।।


vānarāḥ Vanaras, giraśṛṅkāṇi with peaks of mountains, mahataḥ great, mahīruhān huge trees, pragṛhya seizing, raṇē in war, vimardhayiṣavaḥ smash, laṅkām to Lanka, āśēduḥ resolved.

Vanaras resolved to go taking peaks of mountains and huge trees to smash Lanka in war.
śikharairvikirāmaināṅlaṅkāṅmuṣṭabhirēvavā .

itismadadhirēsarvēmanāṅsiharipuṅgavāḥ ।।6.24.21।।


ēnām thus, laṅkām that Lanka, śikharaiḥ with peaks, muṣṭibhirēvavā or with bare fists, vikirāma crush it to powder, itisarvē thus all, haripuṅgavāḥ Vanara leaders, manāṅsi determined in their mind, dadhirē hold, sma indeed.

Thus resolved the Vanara leaders in their mind to crush Lanka with its mountain peaks into powder with their bare fists, indeed.
tatōrāmōmahātējāssugrīvamidamabravīt .

suvibhaktānisainyāniśukaēṣavimucyatām ।।6.24.22।।


tataḥ there upon, mahātēja splendid, rāmaḥ Rama, sugrīvam Sugriva's, idam , thus, abravīt spoke, sainyāni the army, suvibhaktāni the divided, ēṣaḥ thus, śukaḥ Suka, vimucyatām relieved.

Having heard Sugriva, there after splendid Rama spoke thus. "The army is divided (placed in position). Suka may be relieved."
rāmasyatuvacaśśrutvāvānarēndrōmahābalaḥ .

mōcayāmāsataṅdūtaṅśukaṅrāmasyaśāsanāt ।।6.24.23।।


mahābala mighty, vānarēndraḥ king of Vanaras, rāmasya Rama's, vacanam words, śrutvā having heard, rāmasya Rama's, śāsanāt by the instruction, taṅdūtam that envoy, śukam happy, mōcayāmāsa was relieved.

Having heard Rama's words Sugriva, the mighty king of Vanaras was happy and relieved the envoy on the instruction of Rama.
mōcitōrāmavākyēnavānaraiścanipīḍitaḥ .

śukaḥparamasantrastōrakṣōdhipamupāgamat ।।6.24.24।।


vānaraiḥ by Vanaras, nipīḍitaḥ tormented, rāmavākyēna by Rama's word, mōcitaḥ relieved, śukaḥ Suka, paramasantrapta highly terrified, rakṣōdhipam to the king of Rakshasas, upāgamat returned.

Relieved by the word of Rama, tormented Suka who was highly terrified returned to the king of Rakshasas.
rāvaṇaḥprahasannēvaśukaṅvākyamuvācaha ।।6.24.25।।

kimimautēsitaupakṣaulūnapakṣaścadṛśyasē .

kaccinnānēkacittānāṅtēṣāṅtvaṅvaśamāgataḥ ।।6.24.26।।


rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, prahasannēva laughing, śukam at Suka, vākyam these words, uvācaha spoken, tē to you, imau these, pakṣausītaukim why are your wings fastened? , lūnapakṣaścakūḍa even your wings have been clipped, dṛśyasē it appears, tvam you, anēkacittānām fickle minded, tēṣām their, vaśam clutches, naāgataḥ not fallen under kaccit I suppose.

Laughing at Suka, Ravana spoke these words. "Why are your wings fastened? Your wings have been clipped, it appears!. I suppose you have not fallen under the clutches of the fickle minded Vanaras!"
tatassabhayasaṅvignastadārājñābhicōditaḥ .

vacanaṅpratyuvācēdaṅrākṣasādhipamuttamam ।।6.24.27।।

sāgarasyōttarētīrē.bravaṅtēvacanaṅtathā .

yathāsandhēśamakliṣṭaṅsāntvayan ślakṣṇayāgirā ।।6.24.28।।


tataḥ then, bhayasaṅvignaḥ caught by fear, saḥ he, tadā then, rājñā by king, cōditaḥ directed, rākṣasādhipam Ravana, uttamam excellent, idama these, vacanam words, pratyuvāca replied, sāgarasya ocean's, uttarētīrē northern bank ślakṣṇayā gently, girā speech, sāntvayan trembling, yathāsandēśam as conveyed by you, akliṣṭam , tē you, vacanam words, tathā like that, abravam told.

Then Suka who was caught by fear, having been asked by the king, trembling away thus replied to the Rakshasa king. "I went to the northern shore of the ocean and delivered gently the speech just as it was conveyed by you."
kruddhaissairahamutplutadṛṣṭamātraḥplavaṅgamaiḥ .

gṛhītō.smyapicārabdōhantuṅlōptuṅcamuṣṭibhi ।।6.24.29।।


dṛṣṭamātraḥ as soon as they saw, aham me, kruddhai enraged, taiḥplavaṅgamaiḥ those monkeys, utplutya rising up, gṛhītaḥasmi taking hold of me, apica and also, muṣṭibhiḥ with fists, hantum to slay, lōptuṅca and injuring, ārabdaḥ started.

As soon as they saw me, the enraged Vanaras rising up (into the sky) took hold of me and started injuring me and slaying me.
naivasambhāṣituṅśakyāssampraśnō.tranalabhyatē .

prakṛtyākōpanāstīkṣṇānānarārākṣasādhipa ।।6.24.30।।


rākṣasādhipa king of Rakshasas, tē to you, sambhāṣitum to negotiate, naśakyāḥ was not possible, atra there, sampraśnaḥ to question, nalamyatē had no opportunity, vānarāḥ Vanaras, prakṛtyā by nature, kōpanāḥ are violent, tīkṣṇāḥ highly furious.

"O king of Rakshasas! It was not possible to negotiate there with the Vanaras). I had no opportunity to interrogate with them. By nature, Vanaras are violent and are highly furious."
sacahantāvirādhasyakabandhasyakharasyaca .

sugrīvasahitōrāmassītāyā: padamāgataḥ ।।6.24.31।।


virādhasya Viradha's, kabandhasya Kabhanda's, kharasya Khara's, hantā life was taken, saḥrāmaḥ by that Rama, sugrīvasahitaḥ accompanied by Sugriva, sītāyā: Sita's, padam set foot into, āgataḥ arrived.

"The life of Viradha, Kabhanda and Khara has been taken away by Rama. Accompanied by Sugriva they have set their foot into Lanka for Sita's sake."
sakṛtvāsāgarēsētuṅtīrtvācalavaṇōdadhim .

ēṣarakṣāṅsinirdūyadhanvītiṣṭhatirāghavaḥ ।।6.24.32।।


ēṣaḥ such, rāghavaḥ Raghava, sāgarē on the ocean, sētum bridge, kṛtvā having crossed, lavaṇōdadhim salt sea, tīrtvāca shore of, rakṣāṅ Rakshasas, virdūya distancing, dhanvī wielding a bow, tiṣṭhati stands.

"Mighty Raghava having crossed the salt sea and reached the shore of Rakshasas, organized them (Vanaras) and stood wielding a bow."
ṛkṣavānarasaṅghānāmanīkānisahasraśaḥ .

girimēghanikāśānāṅchādayantivasundharām ।।6.24.33।।


girimēghanikāśānām resembling mountains and clouds, ṛkṣavānarasaṅghānām army of Bears and Vanaras, sahasraśaḥ in thousands, anīkāni an army force, vasundharām on the land, chādayanti settled.

"Thousands of army forces of monkeys and Bears resembling mountains and clouds have settled on the ground."
rākṣasānāṅbalaughasyavānarēndrabalasyaca .

naitayōrvidyatēsandhirdēvadānavayōriva ।।6.24.34।।


rākṣasāṅ Rakshasas, balaughasya for Bears, vānarēndrabalasyaca for army of Vanara king's, ētayōḥ for both of them, dēvadānavayōriva like for gods and demons, sandhi: alliance, navidyatē not possible.

Alliance is not possible between Rakshasas and army of Bears and Vanaras, just as alliance is not possible between gods and demons.
purāprākāramāyāntikṣipramēkataraṅkuru .

sītāṅvāsmaiprayacchāśusuyuddhaṅvāpipradīyatām ।।6.24.35।।


prākāram boundary, purā of the city, āyānti will reach, kṣipram at once, ēkataram one of the two, kuru do, asmai you may, āsu give back, sītām Sita, prayacchavā or implore you, suyuddham vāpi or give good battle, pradīyatām I suggest you

"They will reach the boundary wall. At once you may do one of the two that I suggest you do. I implore you either to give away Sita or give good battle."
śukasyavacanaṅśrutvārāvaṇōvākyamabravīt .

rōṣasaṅraktanayanōnirdahanninacakṣuṣā ।।6.24.36।।


rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, śukasya Suka's, vacanam words, śrutvā having heard, rōṣasaṅraktanayanaḥ with angry red eyes, cakṣuṣā from his eyes, nirdahanniva as if he would burn with his glance, vākyam these words, abravit spoke.

Angry, redeyed Ravana, having heard Suka's words spoke as though he would burn him with his glance.
yadimāṅpratiyudhyēran dēvagandharvadānavāḥ .

naivasītāṅpradāsyāmisarvalōkabhayādapi ।।6.24.37।।


dēvagandharvadānavāḥ gods, Gandharvas and demons, mām with me, pratiyudhyērannapi even if come to wage war, sarvalōkabhayādapi even if all worlds threaten me, sītām Sita, nāvapradāsyāmi I shall not give away.

"Even if gods, Gandharvas and demons come to wage war with me, even if all the worlds threaten me, I shall not give away Sita."
kadāsamabhidhāvantirāghavaṅmāmakāśśarāḥ .

vasantēpuṣpitaṅmattābhramarāivapādapam ।।6.24.38।।


māmakāḥ my, śarāḥ arrows, rāghavam to Raghava vasantē spring season, puṣpitam blossoms, pādapam trees, mattāḥ drunken, bramarāḥiva like the bees, kadā when, samabhidhāvanti would attack.

"Just as drunken bees reach the trees with blossoms in spring when will my arrows attack Rama?"
kadātūṇīyaśairdīptairgaṇaśa: kārmukacyutaiḥ .

śarairādīpayāmyēnamulkābhirivakuñjaram ।।6.24.39।।


dīptai: glowing, tūṇīyaśai: from the famed quiver, kārmukacyutaiḥ fit to pierce, gaṇaśa: thousands of, śaraiḥ darts, yēna by which, kuñjaram elephant, ulkābhiriva like the burning sticks, kadāādīpayāmi when will I able to goad.

"When will the glowing arrows from my quiver, that are fit to pierce in thousands, be able to goad Rama like the burning fire sticks goad the elephants?"
taccāsyabalamādāsyēbalēnamahatāvṛtaḥ .

jyōtiṣāmivasarvēṣāṅprabhāmudyandivākaraḥ ।।6.24.40।।


udyan rising, divākaraḥ Sun, sarvēṣām of all, jyōtiṣām light, prabhāmiva like the radiance, mahatā great, balēna army, vṛtaḥ surrounded by, asya his, tat that, balam strength, ādāsyē obscure.

"Just as the rising Sun light obscures the radiance of all (other stars) when will I obscure him surrounded by his army?"
sāgarasyēvamēvēgōmārutasyēvamēgati: .

nahidāśarathirvēdatēnamāṅyōddhumicchati ।।6.24.41।।


mē I, vēgaḥ speed, sāgarasyēva like the ocean, mē I, gati: swiftness, mārutasyēva like the Wind-God, dāśarathiḥ Dasaratha's son, nahivēda not know, tēva that is why, mām with me, yōdhdum to wage war, icchati desiring.

"I have the speed of the ocean and swiftness like the Wind-God. Rama does not know this and desires to wage war with me."
namētūṇīśayānbāṇān saviṣānivapannagān .

rāmaḥpaśyatisaṅgrāmētēnamāṅyōdhdumicchati ।।6.24.42।।


saviṣān the poisonous, pannagāniva serpents like, tūṇīśayān in my quiver, mēbāṇān my arrows, rāmaḥ Rama, saṅgrāmē in battle, napaśyati has not seen, tēna therefore, mām with me, yōdhdum combat, icchati desiring.

"Rama has not seen the poisonous arrows in my quiver in battle. Therefore, he is desiring comb at with me."
najānātipurāvīryamamayuddhēsarāghavaḥ .

mamacāpamayīṅvīṇāṅśarakōṇaiḥpravāditām ।।6.24.43।।

jyāśabdatumulāṅghōrāmārtabhītamahāsvanām .

nārācatalasannādāṅtāṅmamāhitavāhinīm ।।6.24.44।।

avagāhyamahāraṅgaṅvādayiṣyāmyahaṅraṇē .


saḥrāghavaḥ that Rama, purā in the past, yuddhē in war, mama my, vīryam valour, najānāti not known, aham I, raṇē in war, tām them, mama my, āhitavāhinīm entering the enemy's army, mahāraṅgam formidable Veena, avagāhya holding, śarakōṇaiḥ by the sharp heads of arrows, pravāditām makes sounds of challenge, jyāśabdatumulām that tumultuous noise, ghōrām terrific, ārtabhītamahāsvanām high sound caused by the destitute and frightened ones, nārācatalaṅsannādām its sound like that of iron arrows, cāpamayīm with that bow in hand, mama of mine, vīṇām Veena, vādayiṣyāmi will play.

"He has not known my valour in war. Entering the enemy's army holding my formidable Veena, making challenging sounds with the sharp heads of arrows, causing tumultuous noise like the sound of cry of destitute and frightened ones with iron arrows, I will play the Veena of my bow in hand."
navāsavēnāpisahasracakṣuṣāyathāsmiśakyōvaruṇēnavāsvayam .

yamēnavādharṣayituṅśarāgnināmahāhavēvaiśravaṇēnavāpuna: ।। 6.24.45।।


sahasracakṣuṣā thousand eyed one, Indra, vāsavēnānipi even god of water, puna: again, varuṇēnāpi for Varuna also, yudhdē in war, yamēnavā if he is god of death, Yama also, mahāhavē great fire, svayam himself, vaiśravaṇēnavā even if he be Lord of wealth Kubera, śarāgninā by my arrows, śakyaḥ possible, na not.

"It is not possible (to win over) for the thousand eyed Indra, or even Varuna, the god presiding over water, or even for Yama, the god of death and again even for Kubera the god of wealth to face the fire of my arrows (said Ravana to Suka)."
