[Suka begins to give a description of Rama, Lakshmana, Hanuman, Sugriva, and others in the Vanara army to Ravana.]

sārāṇasyavacaśśrutvārāvaṇaṅrākṣasādhipam .

balamādiśyatatsarvaṅśukōvākyamathābravīt ।।6.28.1।।


atha then, śuka: Suka, sāraṇasya Saarana's, vacaḥ words, śrutvā having heard, tat then, sarvam everything, balam strength, ādiśya having described, rākṣasādhipam to Rakshasa king, rāvaṇam Ravana, vākyam these words, abravīt spoke.

Then Ravana the king of Rakshasas having heard Saarana's words and described the strength (of Vanaras) Suka spoke these words.
sthitānpaśyasiyānētānmattānivamahādvipān .

nyagrōdhānivagāṅgēyān sālān haimavatāniva ।।6.28.2।।

ētēduṣprasahārājanbalinaḥkāmarūpiṇaḥ .

daityadānavasaṅkāśāyuddhēdēvaparākramāḥ ।।6.28.3।।


rājan O king!, mattān intoxicated, mahādvipānipa on the island, gaṅgēyān of Ganges, nyagrōdhāniva like banyan tree, haimavatān in Himalaya mountain, sālāniva like Sala trees, sthitān stationed, yān marching, ētān these people, paśyasi you may see, ētē these, duṣprasahāḥ difficult to encounter, balinaḥ strong, kāmarūpiṇaḥ who can change form at their free will, daityadānavasaṅkāśāḥ look like gods and Danavas, yuddhē in war, dēvaparākramāḥ valour like that of gods.

"O King! like a banyan tree on the island, like Sala trees on the Himalayan Mountain these people are stationed. You may see them marching. They are strong to encounter, can change form at their free will. They look like gods and Danavas in war and have the valour of gods."
ēṣāṅkōṭisahasrāṇinavapañcacasaptaca .

tathāśaṅkhusahasrāṇitathābṛndaśatānica ।।6.28.4।।


ēṣām these, nava nine, pañcaca and five, saptaca and seven also, kōṭisahasrāṇi thousand crores, tathā so also, śaṅkhusahasrāṇi thousands of Sankhas*, tathā similarly, bṛndaśatānica hundred Vrindas. (A Sankha is equal to lakh of crores, A vrinda is equal to a lakh of Maha Sankhus).

"These Vanaras are nine, five and seven thousand crores in number. They are in many thousands of Sankhas and Vrindas."
ētēsugrīvasacivāḥkiṣkindhānilayāssadā .

harayōdēvagandharvairutpannāḥkāmarūpiṇaḥ ।।6.28.5।।


dēvagandharvaiḥ celestial gods and Gandharvas, utpannāḥ born to, kāmarūpiṇaḥ they are free to change their form at will, sugrīvasacivāḥ Sugriva's allies, ētē these, sadā always, kiṣkindānilayāḥ reside in Kishkinda.

"These are allies of Sugriva ever residing at Kishkinda. They are born to celestial gods and Gandharvas and can change their form at their will."
yautaupaśyasitiṣṭhantaukumāraudēvarūpiṇau .

maindaścadvividaścōbhautābhyāṅnāstisamōyudhi ।।6.28.6।।


tiṣṭhantau standing there, dēvarūpiṇau in god's form, kumārau young ones, yau both, paśyasi do you see them, tau they both, maindaśca Mainda, dvividhaścōbhau Dwivida, yudhi in war, tābhyām both of them, samaḥ similar, nāsti none.

"Do you see two of them standing there? They are young and have the form of gods. They are Mainda and Dwivida. Both of them are similar in war and none equal them in war."
brāhmaṇāsamamajñātāvamṛtaprāśināpubhau .

āśaṅsētēyuthālaṅkāmētaumarditumōjasā ।।6.28.7।।


brāhmaṇā Brahma, samanujñātau by the permission of, amṛtaprāśinau have drunk the nectar of immortality, ētau they, ubhau both, mōjasaḥ with their prowess, laṅgām Lanka, mardhitum to destroy, āśaṅsētēyuthā leaders aspiring.

"They drank the nectar of immortality with the permission of Brahma. These leaders are aspiring to destroy Lanka by their prowess."
yaṅtupaśyasitiṣṭantaṅprabhinnamivakuñjaram .

yōbalāt kṣōbhayēt kruddhassamudramapivānaraḥ ।।6.28.8।।

ēṣō.bhigantālaṅkāyāvaidēhyāstavacaprabhō: .

ēnaṅpaśyapurādṛṣṭaṅvānaraṅpunarāgatam ।।6.28.9।।


prabhō O Lord!, prabhinnam deformed, kuñjaram iva like elephants, tiṣṭhantama standing, yam there, paśyasi you may see, kruddhaḥvānaraḥ when angry this Vanara, yaḥ who, samudramapi even the sea, kṣōbhayēt will churn up, ēṣaḥ this, laṅkāyāḥ Lanka's, vaidēhyāḥ Vaidehi, tana spread, abigantā seen and gone, parā earlier, dṛṣṭam seen, punaḥ and again, āgatam come, ēnam him, paśya you may see.

"O Lord! You may see the one standing there like an elephant who can churn up the sea when he is angry. He has come to Lanka earlier, seen Sita and gone back. You may see that he has come again."
jyēṣṭhaḥkēsariṇaḥputtrōvātātmajaitiśrutaḥ .

hanūmānitivikhyātōlaṅghitōyēnasāgaraḥ ।।6.28.10।।


yēna this, sāgaraḥ sea, laṅghitaḥ leapt over, kēsariṇaḥ Kesari's, jyēṣṭhaḥ eldest, puttraḥ son, vātātmajaḥiti of Wind-God, śrutaḥ son, hanūmāniti called Hanuman, vikhyātaḥ popular.

"He is the eldest son born of Kesari and the son of Wind-God and is popularly known as Hanuman. He leapt over the sea and came."
kāmarūpīhariśrēṣṭōbalarūpasamanvitaḥ .

anivāryagatiścaivayathāsatatagaḥprabhuḥ ।।6.28.11।।


hariśrēṣṭhaḥ jewel among Vanaras, kāmarūpaḥ one who can change form at his will, balarūbasamanvitaḥ endowed with physical strength and charm, satatagaḥ being existent everywhere, prabhuḥyathā like Lord, anivāryagatiścaiva has the speed of wind and his course cannot be prevented like wind.

"He is a jewel among Vanaras. He can change his form at his will. He is endowed with physical strength and charm. Being existent everywhere like wind-god his cause cannot be prevented like that of wind god."
udyantabhāskaraṅdṛṣṭavābālaḥkilapipāsitaḥ .

triyōjanasahasraṅtuadhvānamavatīryahi ।।6.28.12।।

ādityamāhariṣyāminamēkṣutpratiyāsyati .

itisañcintyamanasāpuraiṣabaladarpitaḥ ।।6.28.13।।


bālakaḥ when he was a child, pipāsitaḥ being hungry, udyantam rising, bhāskaram Sun, dṛṣṭavā seeing, triyōjanasahasram three thousand yojanas, adhvānam travelled, avatīrya alighted, mē my, kṣut son, napratisyati not be appeased, ādityam Sun, āhariṣyāmi will eat up, iti thus, manasā thinking, sañcintya resolving, baladarpitaḥ proud of his strength, puraiṣa leapt.

When he was a child, on seeing the rising Sun, he travelled three thousand yojanas and said, "I will eat up the Sun otherwise I will not be appeased', being proud of his strength."
anādhṛṣyatamaṅdēvamapidēvarṣidānavaiḥ .

anāsāghaivapatitōbhāskarōdayanēgirau ।।6.28.14।।


dēvarṣidānavairapi even for gods, sages and Danavas, anādhṛṣyatamam unassailable, dēvam Sun god god, anāsādyēva not possible, bhāskarōdayanē near the eastern part, girau on the mountain, patitā fell down.

"Unassailable even for gods, sages and Danavas to reach the Sun god, he fell down near the eastern part."
patitasyakapērasyahanurēkāśilātalē .

kiñcidbhinnādṛḍhahanōrhanūmānēṣatēnavai ।।6.28.15।।


śilātalē over the mountain, patitasya fallen down, asya this, kapē monkey, ēkā one, hanuḥ jaw, kiñcit a bit, bhinnātēna slightly broken, dṛḍhahanuḥ solid jaw, ēṣaḥ this, hanumān Hanuman.

"By falling on the mountain one of the jaws of the monkey got broken. This is the reason that he is known as Hanuman."
satyamāgamayōgēnamamaiṣaviditōhariḥ .

nāsyaśakyaṅbalaṅrūpaṅprabhāvōvā.pibhāṣitam ।।6.28.16।।


ēṣaḥ this, hariḥ monkey, mama to me, satyam truth, āgamayōgēna by one who is in contact with me, viditaḥ known, asya his, balam strength, rūpam appearance, prabhāvōnā even his glory, nabhāṣitam api cannot be described, naśakyam not possible.

"I came to know about him through one of my contacts. His strength, his appearance and glory are indescribable."
ēṣaāśaṅsatēlaṅkāmēkōmarditumōjasā .

yēvajājvalyatē.pauvaidhūmakētustavādyavai ।।6.28.17।।

laṅkāyāṅnihitaścāpikathaṅvismarasēkapim .


ēṣaḥ this, ēkaḥ single -handed, ōjasā prowess, laṅkām Lanka, marditum demolish, āśaṅsatētana is intending to do, laṅkāyām at Lanka, yēna by him, nihitaḥ entrusted, asau this, dhūmakētuḥ Dhoomakethu, adyavai now, jājvalyatē fired the tail, kapim monkey, katham how, vismarasē forget.

"This monkey is intending to demolish this Lanka single handed. How can you forget about (the task of) setting his tail on fire entrusted by you to Dhoomakethu?"
yaścaiṣō.nantaraśśūraśśyāmaḥpadmanibhēkṣaṇaḥ .

ikṣvākūṇāmatirathōlōkēvikhyātapauruṣa ।।6.28.18।।

yasminnacalatēdharmōyōdharmaṅnātivartatē .

yōbrāhmamastraṅvēdāṅścavēdavēdavidāṅvaraḥ ।।6.28.19।।

yōbhindyādgaganaṅbāṇaiḥparvatāṅścāpidārayēt .

yasyamṛtyōrivakrōdhaśśakrasyēvaparākramaḥ ।।6.28.20।।

yasyabhāryājanasthānātsītācāpihṛtātvayā .

saēṣarāmastvāṅyōddhuṅrājansamabhivartatē ।।6.28.21।।


rājan O king!, śyāmaḥ dark complexioned, padmanibhēkṣaṇaḥ lotus like eyes, yaḥ he, ēṣaḥ this, anantaraḥ not distant from him, yasmin his, dharmaḥ righteousness, vēdavidān use of vedas, varaḥ presided over, yaḥ he by whom, brāhmaṇ Brahma astram weapon, vēdāṅśca and vedas also, vēda knows, yaḥ he whose, bāṇaiḥ arrows, gaganam sky, bhindyāt pierce through, parvatāṅścāpi even the mountains, dārayēt consort, yasya his, krōdhaḥ anger, mṛtyōriva like death, parākramaḥ valour, śakrasyēva like that of Indra, yasya his, bhāryā wife, sītā Sita, tvayā your, janasthānāt from Janasthana, hṛtā borne away, ikṣvākūṇām of Ikshvaku race, vikhyātapauruṣaḥ, saḥ he, rāmaḥ Rama, yōddhum war, tvām with you, abhivartatē is advancing.

"O king! the king who is not distant from him, a dark complexioned, one with lotus eyes who never transgresses his righteousness, who is a great charioteer of Ikshvaku race; who knows use of Vedas, who is choicest, who knows the weapons presided over by Brahma; whose arrows can pierce through the sky and even mountains; whose anger is like anger of death, whose valour is like that of Indra; whose consort has been borne away from Janasthana is Rama. He is advancing towards you to wage war with you."
yasyaiṣadakṣiṇēpārśvēśuddhajāmbūnadaprabhaḥ .

viśālavakṣāstāmrākṣōnīlakuñjitamūrdhajaḥ ।।6.28.22।।

ēṣō.syalakṣmaṇōnāmabhrātāprāṇasamaḥpriyaḥ .

nayēyuddhēcakuśalassarvaśastrabhṛtaṅvaraḥ ।।6.28.23।।


yasya his, dakṣiṇēpārśvē right side, ēṣaḥ this, śuddhajāmbūnadaprabhaḥ whose body radiates like gold, viśālavakṣāḥ one with broad chest, tāmrākṣaḥ red eyes, nīlakuñcitamārdhajaḥ dark curly haired, ēṣaḥ this is, lakṣmaṇōnāma known as Lakshmana, bhrātā brother, prāṇasamahāpriyaḥ as dear as life, nayē in moral science, yuddhēca and warfare, kuśalaḥ skilled, sarvaśastrabhṛtām foremost among all wielders of weapons, varaḥ the best.

"To his right is his brother known as Lakshmana whose body radiates like gold, he has broad chest, red eyes, dark curly hair. He is as dear as his life to Rama. He is skilled in moral science and warfare. He is the foremost and the best among wielders of weapons."
amarṣīdurjayōjētāvikrāntōbuddhimān balī .

rāmasyadakṣiṇōbāhurnityaṅprāṇōbahiścaraḥ ।।6.28.24।।


amarṣī one who does not forgive (the enemies of Rama), durjayaḥ difficult to win, vikrāntaḥ indomitable, jētā victorious, buddhimān wise one, balī strong one, nityam ever, rāmasya Rama's, dakṣiṇaḥbāhuḥ right hand, bahiścaraḥ external breath, prāṇaḥ life

"He is one who does not forgive (Rama's enemies), difficult to win, indomitable, victorious, strong and wise one. He is the right hand of Rama and external breath of his life."
nahyēṣarāghavasyārthējīvitaṅparirakṣati .

ēṣaivāśaṅsatēyuddhēnihantuṅsarvarākṣasān ।।6.28.25।।


ēṣaḥ this, rāghavasyārthē for the cause of Rama, jīvitam life, naparirakṣatihi not spare his life. ēṣainā he too, yuddhē in war, sarvarākṣasān all Rakshasas, vihantum destroy, āśiṅpatē intent upon.

"For the cause of Rama, he will spare his life. He too is intent upon destroying all Rakshasas."
yastusavyamasaupakṣaṅrāmasyāśrityatiṣṭhati .

rakṣōgaṇaparikṣiptōrājāhyēṣavibhīṣaṇaḥ ।।6.28.26।।


asau the one, yaḥtu who is near, rāmasya Rama's, savyam left, pakṣam side, āśritya sought refuge, tiṣṭhati stands, rakṣōgaṇaparikṣiptaḥ surrounded by Rakshasas and protected, ēṣaḥ he is, rājā king, vibhīṣaṇa Vibheeshana.

"The one who is near Rama's left who sought Rama's refuge and stands surrounded by Rakshasas and protected is the king Vibheeshana."
śrīmatārājarājēnalaṅkāyāmabhiṣēcitaḥ .

tvāmēvapratisaṅrabdōyuddhāyaiṣō.bhivartatē ।।6.28.27।।


matā prosperous, rājarājēna king of kings, laṅkāyām of Lanka, abhiṣēcitaḥ consecrated, ēṣaḥ this, tvāmēva by him, pratisaṅrabdhaḥ filled with anger, yuddhāya for waging war, abhivartatē is advancing.

"He is a prosperous king of the kings of Lanka. He has been consecrated by Rama, filled with anger he is advancing to wage war with you."
yaṅtupasyasitiṣṭhantaṅmadhyēgirimivācalam .

sarvaśākhāmṛgēndrāṇāṅbhartāramamitaujasam ।।6.28.28।।

tējayaśasābud dhyājñānēnābhijanēnaca .

yaḥkapīnatibabhrājahimavānivaparvatān ।।6.28.29।।

kiṣkindhāṅyassamadhyāstēguhāṅsagahanadrumām .

durgāṅparvatadurgastāṅpradhānaissahayūthapaiḥ ।।6.28.30।।

yasyaiṣākāñcanīmālāśōbhitēśatapuṣkarā .

kāntādēvamanuṣyāṇāṅyasyāṅlakṣmīpratiṣṭhitā ।।6.28.31।।

ētāṅcamālāṅtārāṅcakapirājyaṅcaśāśvatam .

sugrīvōvālinaṅhatvārāmēṇapratipāditaḥ ।।6.28.32।।


sarvaśākhāmṛgēndrāṇām the Lord of all monkey leaders, bhartāram Lord, amitaujasam highly glorious one, madhyē in the midst, tiṣṭantam standing, yam restrained, acalam steady, girimiva like a mountain, paśyasi do you see, yaḥ he, himavān Himalayas, paryataḥitatējasā just as it out shines all mountains, yaśasā in fame, budhyā in intellect, jñānēna in wisdom, abhijanēna lineage, kapi monkey, atibabhrāja with thickly grown, yaḥ that he, sagahanadrumām surrounded by the trees, durgām difficult to access, parvatadurgasthām in the mountain cave fort, guhām in the cave, kiṣkindhām in Kishkinda, pradhānaiḥ chief, yūthapai: saha along with army chiefs, samādhyāstē in the midst, yasyām its, dēvamanuṣyāṇām by gods and human beings, lakṣmīḥ Lakshmi, pratiṣṭhitā is installed, kāntā of his beloved, śatapuṣkarā of hundred flowers, kāñcanī golden, ēṣā in the same way, yasya her, mālā chain, śōbhitē glowing, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, rāmēṇa by Rama, vālinam Vali, hatvā having slayed, ētām that, mālām chain, tārāṅca and Tara, śāśvatam permanently, kapirājyaṅca kingdom of the monkeys, pratipāditaḥ has been granted.

"The one whom you see standing in the midst is the king of all chiefs of the Vanara army, a highly glorious one, steady like a mountain. like Himalayas that outshines all mountains, he surpasses all in fame, in intellect, in wisdom and in lineage. That monkey chief resides in the mountain cave fort with thickly grown trees around in the middle of Kishkinda, which is difficult to access, and is surrounded by his army chiefs. See the golden chain on him shining away with hundred lotuses in which stands Lakshmi installed which is difficult even for gods and human beings to covet. In the same way as the golden chain, even his beloved Tara and kingdom of the monkeys was permanently bestowed upon him by Rama after slaying Vali."
śataṅśatasahasrāṇāṅkōṭimāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ .

śataṅkōṭisahasrāṇāṅśaṅku: ityabhidhīyatē ।।6.28.33।।


manīṣiṇaḥ the wise men, śatasahasrāṇām hundred thousand, śatam hundred, kōṭim crore, āhuḥ multiplied by, kōṭisahasrāṇām thousand crores, śatam hundred, śaṅkuḥ Sankhu, iti thus, abhidhīyatē is said to be.

"It is said by wise men that hundred thousand crores multiplied by hundred thousand crores as Sankha."
śataṅśaṅkusahasrāṇāṅmahāśaṅku: itismṛtaḥ ।।6.28.34।।

mahāśaṅkusahasrāṇāṅśataṅbṛndamihōcyatē .

śataṅbṛndasahasrāṇāṅmahāvṛndamitismṛtam ।।6.28.35।।

mahābṛndasahasrāṇāṅśataṅpadmamihōcyatē .

śataṅpadmasahasrāṇāṅmahāpadmamitismṛtim ।।6.28.36।।

mahāpadmasahasrāṇāṅśataṅkharvamihōcyatē .

śataṅkharvasahasrāṇāṅmahākharvamivōcyatē ।।6.28.37।।

mahākharvasahasrāṇāṅsamudramabhidhīyatē .

taṅsamudrasāhasramōghaityabhidhīyatē ।।6.28.38।।

śatamōghasahasrāṇāṅmahaughaitiviśrutaḥ .


śaṅkusahasrāṇām Thousand Sankhus, śatam hundred, mahāśaṅkuḥiti is MahaSankhu. smṛtaḥ be aware, mahāśaṅkusahasrāṇām hundred thousand MahaSankhu, śatam hundred, bṛndam Vrinda, iha thus, ucyatē said to be bṛndapasahasrāṇām thousand Vrindas, śatam hundred, mahābṛndam iti is said to be MahaVrinda, smṛtam you may know, padmam Padmam, iha here, ucyatē is said to be padmasahasrāṇām thousand Padmas, śatam hundred, mahāpadmamiti as Maha Padma, smṛtam you may know, mahāpadmasahasrāṇām thousand Mahapadmas, śatam hundred, kharvam Kharvam, iha is, mahākharmam Mahakharvam, ivōcyatē is spoken as, mahākharmasahasrāṇām thousand MahaKharvam, samudram Samudram, abhidhīyatē as well, śatam hundred, samudrasāhasram thousand Samudras, ōghaṛiti Ogha, abhitīyatē as well as, ōghasahasrāṇām thousand Oghas, śatam hundred, mahaughaḥiti as Mahaogha, viśrutaḥ is popularly known as.

A lakh of Sanku is known as Maha Sanku. A lakh of Maha Shanka is spoken as Vrinda. A lakh of Vrindas is spoken as Maha Brinda. A lakh of Maha Vrindas is known as Padma. One lakh Padmas is known as Maha Padma and a lakh of Maha Padmas is known as Kharva. A lakh of Kharvas is known as Maha Kharva and a lakh of Maha Kharvas is known as a Samudra. A lakh of Samudras is known as an Ogha. A lakh of Oghas is popularly known as Maha Ogha.
ēvaṅkōṭisahasrēṇaśaṅkūnāṅcaśatēnaca ।।6.28.39।।

mahāśaṅkusahasrēṇatathābṛndaśatēnaca .

mahābṛndasahasrēṇatathāpadmaśatēnaca ।।6.28.40।।

hāpadmasahasrēṇatathākharvaśatēnaca .

samudrēṇacatēnaivamahaughēnatathaivaca ।।6.28.41।।

ēṣakōṭimahaughēnasamudrasadṛśēnaca .

vibhīṣaṇēnasacivaiḥrākṣasaiḥparivāritaḥ ।।6.28.42।।

sugrīvōvānarēndrastvāṅyuddhārthamamavartatē .

mahābalavṛtōnityaṅmahābalaparākramaḥ ।।6.28.43।।


ēvam in this manner, kōṭisahasrēṇa thousand crores, śaṅkūnām Sankhus, śatēnaca a hundred, mahāśaṅkusahasrēṇa thousand MahaSankhus, tathā so also, bṛndaśatēnaca hundred Vrindas, mahābṛndasahasrēṇa thousand MahaVrindas, tathā so also, padmaśatēnaca hundred Padmas, mahāpadmasahasrēṇa thousand MahaPadmas, tathā so also, kharvaśatēna hundred Kharvas, tēnaiva nay, samudrēṇa by a Samudra, tathaivaca and similarly, sathanēvamahaughēna hundred MahaOgha, kōṭimahaughēna crore MahaOgha, samudrasadṛśēnaca just as an ocean, vīrēṇa galliant, rākṣasaiḥ Rakshasas, vibhīṣaṇēna by Vibheeshana, sacivaiḥ accompanied by ministers, parivāritaḥ and others, mahābalaparākramaḥ highly valiant and mighty strong, nityam ever, mahābalavṛtaḥ surrounded by great army, vānarēndraḥ king of Vanaras, ēṣaḥsugrīvaḥ this Sugriva, tvām with you, yuddhārtham for waging war, anuvartatē are following.

"In this manner (surrounded by) thousand crore Sankhas, a hundred thousand MahaSankhas, so also by a hundred Vrindas and thousand MahaVrindas, so also by a hundred Padmas and a thousand Mahapadmas, similarly by a hundred Kharvas nay by a Samudra, and similarly by a hundred Oghas and a hundred crore MahaOghas of monkey warriors, accompanied by gallant Vibheeshana and his ministers; Sugriva the king of monkeys is ever surrounded by the great army of highly valiant and strong warriors is marching to wage war.
imāṅmahārājasamīkṣyavāhinīmupasthitāṅprajvalitagrahōpamām .

tataḥprayatnaḥparamōvidhīyatāṅyathājayassyānnaparaiḥparājayaḥ ।।6.28.44।।


mahārāja O Great king!, pravajitagrahōpamām looking like a cruel blazing planet, upasthitām stationed close, imām this, vāhinīm ocean of army, samīkṣya observing tataḥ that, jayaḥ victory, yathā so also, syāt in the hand s of, paraiḥ enemies, parājayaḥ defeat, na not, paramaḥ supreme, prayatnaḥ effort, vidhīyatām perform.

"O Great King! Observing the ocean of army close by their appearing cruel like a blazing planet, make supreme efforts to be victorious and not to be defeated in the hands of the enemy."
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēaṣṭāviṅśassargaḥ ।।
