[Ravana rebukes the spies, Suka and Saarana from the Rakshasa army for praising Vanara army and sends Saardula, another spy who also reports about the strength of Vanara army.]

शुकेनतुसमाख्यातान्दृष्ट्वासहरियूथपान् ।

समीपस्थंचरामस्यभ्रातरंस्वंविभीषणम् ।।6.29.1।।

लक्ष्मणंचमहावीर्यंभुजंरामस्यदक्षिणं ।

सर्ववानरराजंचसुग्रीवंभीमविक्रमम् ।।6.29.2।।

अङ्गदंचापिबलिनंवज्रहस्तात्मजात्मजम् ।

हनूमन्तंचविक्रान्तंजाम्बवन्तंचदुर्जयम् ।।6.29.3।।

सुषेणंकुमुदंनीलंनलंचप्लवगर्षभम् ।

गजंगवाक्षंशरभंमैन्दंचद्विविदंतथा ।।6.29.4।।

किञ्चिदाविग्नहृदयोजातक्रोधश्चरावणः ।

भर्त्सयामासतौवीरौकथान्तेशुकसारणौ ।।6.29.5।।


सःरावण that Ravana, शुकेन by Suka, समाख्यातान् spoken that way, हरियूथपान् about the army of monkeys, रामस्य Rama's, दक्षिणंभुजम् right shoulder, महावीर्यम् extraordinary valour, लक्ष्मणंच at Lakshmana, रामस्य Rama's, समीपस्थम् close by, भ्रातरम् the brother, विभीषणम् Vibheeshana, सर्ववानरराजम् King of all Vanaras, भीमविक्रमम् one of fierce valour, सुग्रीवंच Sugriva, बलिनम् the strong, वज्रहस्तात्मजात्मजम् the son of Vali (son of Indra who wields a thunderbolt ), अङ्गदंचापि and also Angada, विक्रान्तम् the valiant, हनूमन्तम् Hanuman, दुर्जयम् difficult to conquer, जाम्बवन्तम् Jambavan, सुषेणम् Sushena, कुमुदम् Kumuda, नीलम् Nila, प्लवगर्षभम् bull among leaping ones, नलंच that Nala, गजम् Gaja, गवाक्षम् at Gavaksha, शरभम् Sarabha, मैन्दम् Mainda, तथा likewise, द्विविदम् Dwiv i da, दृष्टवा seeing, किञ्चित् a little, आविग्नहृदय broken hearted, जातक्रोधश्च with fury, कथांते aforesaid, वीरौ heroes, तौ both, शुकसारणौ Suka and Saarana, भर्त्सयामास started to rebuke.

There after Ravana having heard the words spoken by Suka about the army of Vanara heroes, seeing Lakshmana of extraordinary valour, the right shoulder of Rama standing close by Rama his own brother Vibheeshana close by the king of Vanaras, Sugriva of fierce valour and Angada the son of Vali (the son of Indra who wields thunderbolt) and valiant Hanuman Jambavan who is difficult to conquer Sushena, Nila, Kumuda, bull among the leaping animals Nala likewise Gaja, Gavaksha, Sarabha, Mainda and Dwivida got a little broken hearted and mixed with fury started to rebuke both the heroes Suka and Saarana.
अधोमुखौतौप्रणतावब्रवीच्छुकसारणौ ।

रोषगद्गदयावाचासंरब्धंपरुषंवचः ।।6.29.6।।


अधोमुखौ with heads bent down, प्रणतौ in supplication, तौ both, शुकसाणौ Suka and Saarana, रोषगद्गदया throat choked with anger, वाचा spoke, संरब्द indignantly, तथा so also, परूषम् harshly, अब्रवीत् spoke.

(That Ravana) with his throat choked with anger spoke indignantly and harshly to both Suka and Saarana who stood with their heads bent down in supplication.
नतावत्सदृशंनामसचिवैरुपजीविभिः ।

विप्रियंनृपतेर्वक्तुंनिग्रहेप्रग्रहेप्रभोः ।।6.29.7।।


उपजीविभि those who are dependant, सचिवै ministers, विग्रहे to keep in check, प्रग्रहे holding forth, प्रभो to a capable, नृपते ruler, निप्रियम् that which is unpleasant, वक्तुम् to speak, सदृशम् in this way, नतावत् नाम् not proper.

"It is not proper for those ministers dependent on a capable ruler who has the power to check and hold forth, to speak that which is unpleasant."
रिपूणांप्रतिकूलानांयुद्धार्थमभिवर्तताम् ।

उभाभ्यांसदृशंनामवक्तुमप्रस्तवेस्तवम् ।।6.29.8।।


अप्रस्तवे inappropriate, उभाभ्याम् both of you, प्रतिकूलानाम् antagonistic, युद्धार्थम् before war, अभिवर्तताम् speaking this way, रिपूणाम् about enemies, स्तवम् to praise, वक्तुम् your talking, सदृशंनाम for you this way.

"Is it appropriate for both of you to praise the enemy this way before war?"
आचार्यागुरवोवृद्धावृथावांपर्युपासिताः ।

सारंयद्राजशास्त्राणामनुजीव्यंनगृह्यते ।।6.29.9।।


यत् that which is, राजशास्त्राणाम् in political sastras, अनुजीव्यम् living upon, सारम् essence, नगृह्यते not grasped, वाम् both of you, आचार्य teachers, गुरव sages, वृद्धा parents, वृथा waste, पर्युपासिता waiting upon.

"You have not grasped that which is the essence of political wisdom in the sastras in spite of waiting upon elders, teachers and parents which was in vain."
गृहीतोवानविज्ञातोभारोऽज्ञानस्यवाह्यते ।

ईदृशै: सचिवैर्युक्तोमूर्खैर्दिष्ट्यधराम्यहम् ।।6.29.10।।


गृहीत even if you have grasped, नविज्ञातोवा not known the meaning, अज्ञानस्य out of ignorance, भार intensity, वाह्यते bearing, मूर्खै foolish ones, ईदृशै like these, सचिवै ministers, युक्त not fit, अहम् I, दिष्ट्या out of good luck, धरामि ruling this sovereignty.

"Even if you have grasped you have not understood the meaning or out of intensity of your ignorance. Or else I am bearing foolish ones like you who are not fit to be ministers. Out of good luck I am ruling this sovereignty."
किंनुमृत्योर्भयंनास्तिवक्तुंमांपरुषंवचः ।

यस्यमेशासतोजिह्वाप्रयच्छतिशुभाशुभम् ।।6.29.11।।


शासत by order, यस्यमे by that alone, जिह्वा by tongue, शुभाशुभम् auspicious and inauspicious, प्रयच्छति articulating, माम् to me, परुषम् harsh, वच words, वक्तुम् to speak, मृत्यो death, भयम् fear, नास्तिकिंनु do you not have.

"Did you not have fear of death when you spoke such harsh words to me, who can by mere order make good or evil to you?"
अप्येवदहनंस्पृष्टवावनेतिष्ठन्तिपादपाः ।

राजदोषपरामृष्टास्तिष्ठन्तेनापराधिनः ।।6.29.12।।


पादपा trees, दहनम् fire, स्पृष्टवा touching, आप्येव even after, वने in forest, तिष्ठन्ति remains unscathed, राजदोषपरामृष्टा treated harshly on account of punishment of the king, अपराधिन those who are punishable, नतिष्ठन्ते not remain unpunished.

"Trees may remain unscathed even on touching forest fire, but those who are punishable do not remain unpunished on account of the king and are treated harshly."
हन्यामहंत्विमौपापौशत्रुपक्षप्रशंसकौ ।

यदिपूर्वोपकारैस्तुनक्रोधोमृदुतांव्रजेत् ।।6.29.13।।


अहम् I, हन्याम् would have slayed, त्वम्इमौपापौ these two sinners, शत्रुपक्षप्रशंसकौ who praise the enemy side, यदि if, मे my, क्रोध anger, न not, मृदुताम् व्रजेत् softened, पूर्वोपकारै due to earlier service.

"I would have slayed these two sinners who praise the enemy side, if my anger had not softened and remembered their earlier services."
अपध्वंसतगच्छध्वंसन्निकर्षाद्इतोमम ।

नहिवांहन्तुमिच्छामिस्मराम्युपकृतानिवाम् ।।6.29.14।।

हतावेवकृतघ्नौतौमयिस्नेहपराङ्मुखौ ।


अपध्वंसत disappear from here, गच्छध्वम् going from here, मम my, इत this सन्निकर्षात् from neighbourhood,, वाम् you, उपकृतानि services affected by you, स्मरामि remember, हन्तुम् to kill, नइच्छामि do not wish, मयि to me, स्नेहपराङ्मुखौ devoid of love, कृतघ्नौ ungrateful, तौ both, हतावेव stand killed.

"You get away from here, disappear from here. On the contrary since I remember your earlier actions performed by you, I do not wish to kill you. Indeed, both of you are devoid of love and are ungrateful. You stand killed (already)."
एवमुक्तौतुसव्रीळौतावुभौशुकसारणौ ।

रावणंजयशब्देनप्रतिनन्द्याभिनिस्सृतौ ।।6.29.15।।


एवम् that way, उक्तौ having spoken, तौशुकसारणौ both Suka and Saarana, सव्रीळौ feeling shy, रावणम् Ravana's, जयशब्देनप्रतिनन्द्य both praised saying ' let you be victorious', निस्सृतौ withdrew from there.

Ravana, having spoken that way, both Suka and Saarana felt shy and withdrew from speaking words of praise of Ravana saying, 'Let you be victorious'.
अब्रवीत्सदशग्रीव: समीपस्थंमहोदरम् ।

उपस्तापयमेशीघ्रंचारान्नीतिविशारदान् ।।6.29.16।।


अब्रवीत् said, स he, दशग्रीव tenheaded one (Ravana), समीपस्थम् who was standing nearby, महोदरम् Mahodara, उपस्थापय bring, मे to me, नीतिविशारद expert in policy, शीघ्रम् swiftly चारान् spies.

Ravana, the tenheaded one, then said to Mahodara who was standing nearby swiftly bring spies who are experts in policy to me.
महोदरस्तथोक्तस्तुशीघ्रमाज्ञापयच्चरान् ।।6.29.17।।

ततश्चारास्संत्वरिताःप्राप्ताःपार्थिवशासनात् ।

उपस्थिताःप्राञ्जलयोवर्धयित्वाजयशिषाः ।।6.29.18।।


तथा so, उक्त having said, महोदर Mahodara, शीघ्रम् swiftly, चरान् spies, आज्ञापयत् ordered, तत then, संत्वरिता quickly, पार्थिवशानात् as per the order of the King,, प्राप्ता approached, चारा spies, प्राञ्जलय greeted with folded hand s, जयशिषा saying 'be victorious', वर्धयित्वा promoting, उपस्थिता stood.

(Ravana) Having said so, Mahodara ordered the spies to approach the king quickly. On reaching they greeted the king with folded hand s promoting h i m to' be victorious' and stood.
तानब्रवीत्ततोवाक्यंरावणोराक्षसाधिपः ।

चारान्प्रत्यायितान् शूरान्भक्तान्विगतसाध्वसान् ।।6.29.19।।


तत there upon, रक्षसाधिप Lord of Rakshasas, रावण Ravana, प्रात्ययितान् those who are dependable, शूरान् warriors, भक्तान् devotees, विगतसाध्वसान् who are devoid of fear of enemies, तान् चरान् those spies, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

There upon the Lord of Rakshasas, spoke these words to those spies who are dependable ones, warriors devoid of fear of enemies.
इतोगच्छतरामस्यव्यवसायंपरीक्षथ ।

मन्त्रिष्वभ्यन्तरायेऽस्यप्रीत्यातेनसमागताः ।।6.29.20।।


रामस्य Rama's, व्यवसायम् perception, अन्य of others, ये those, मन्त्रिषु ministers, अभ्यन्तरा close to him, प्रीत्या in affection, तेन to him, समागता who have reached there, परीक्षथ observing, इत from here, गच्छत go.

"From here you go and reach there you may observe perceptions of Rama and of others close to him, his ministers and those who have reached there in affection to him."
कथंस्वपितिजागर्तिकिमन्यच्चकरिष्यति ।

विज्ञायनिपुणंसर्वमागन्तव्यमशेषतः ।।6.29.21।।


कथम् how, स्वपिति he goes to sleep, जागर्ति wakes up, अन्य other, किम् what, करिष्यति he does, सर्वम् everything, अशेषत thoroughly, निपुणम् carefully, विज्ञाय knowing, आगन्तव्यम् you may come.

"You may see how he goes to sleep, how he wakes up etc., what he does, everything. You may come after knowing everything."
चारेणविदितश्शत्रुःपण्डितैर्वसुधाधिपैः ।

युद्धेस्वल्पेनयत्नेनसमासाद्यनिरस्यते ।।6.29.22।।


पण्डितै wise, वसुधाधिपै kings of the land, चारेण from the spies, विदित knowing, शत्रु enemies, युद्धे in war, समासाद्य having known, स्वल्पेन little, यत्नेन effort, निरस्यते destroy.

"Wise kings of the land, having known about enemies from the spies destroy enemies in war with little effort."
चारास्तुतेतथेत्युक्त्वाप्रहृष्टाराक्षसेश्वरम् ।

शार्दूलमग्रतःकृत्वाततश्चक्रुःप्रदक्षिणम् ।।6.29.23।।


ते those, चारास्तु spies then, प्रहृष्टा gladly, तथेति saying 'be it so', उक्त्वा having uttered, शार्दूलम् Saardula, अग्रत in front, कृत्वा keeping, राक्षसेश्वरम् Rakshasa king, प्रदक्षिणम् going round in reverence (the king), चक्रु departed.

The spies then gladly uttered the words 'be it so', went round the king in reverence and departed with Saardula leading in front.
ततस्तेतंमहात्मानंचाराराक्षससत्तमम् ।

कृत्वाप्रदक्षिणंजग्मुर्यत्ररामस्सलक्ष्मणः ।।6.29.24।।


तत then, चारा the spies, महात्मानम् great self, तम् him, राक्षससत्तमम् foremost of Rakshasas, प्रदक्षिणं circumambulation, कृत्वा having done, सलक्ष्मणःराम that Lakshmana and Rama, यत्र there, जग्मु went.

Then the spies circumambulated the great Rakshasa king and having done so went to the place where Rama and Lakshmana were stationed.
तेसुवेलस्यशैलस्यसमीपेरामलक्ष्मणौ ।

प्रच्छन्नाददृशुर्गत्वाससुग्रीवविभीषणौ ।।6.29.25।।


ते hey, गत्वा reaching, प्रच्छन्ना in disguise, सुवेलस्यशैलस्य Suvela mountain, समीपे near, ससुग्रीवविभीषणौ Sugriva and Vibheeshana, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, ददृशु saw.

Reaching the Suvela mountain in disguise, they saw Rama and Lakshmana along with Sugriva and Vibheeshana.
प्रेक्षमाणाश्चमूंतांतुबभूवुर्भयविक्लबाः ।

तेतुधर्मात्मनादृष्टाराक्षसेन्द्रेणराक्षसा ।।6.29.26।।


तेराक्षसा those Rakshasas, तांचमूम् that army, प्रेक्षमाणा started looking, भयविक्लबा bewildered with fear, बभूवु remained, धर्मात्मना righteous one, राक्षसेन्द्रेण Rakshasa king (Vibheeshana), दृष्टा on seeing.

Those Rakshasas were bewildered with fear on looking at the army. Righteous Vibheeshana recognized them on seeing them.
विभीषणेनतत्रस्थानिगृहीतायदृच्छया ।

शार्दूलोग्राहितस्त्वेकःपापोऽयमितिराक्षसः ।।6.29.27।।


यदृच्छया by chance, तत्रस्था , विभीषणेन by Vibheeshana, निगृहीता seized, आयम् them, राक्षस the Rakshasas, पापा evil one, इतिएक thus alone, शार्दूलःतु you Saardula, ग्राहित caught hold.

By chance Vibheeshana seized Saardula, the evil Rakshasa who was moving in that army.
मोचितस्सोऽपिरामेणवध्यमानःप्लवङ्गमैः ।

अनृशंस्येनरामेणमोचिताराक्षसाःपरे ।।6.29.28।।


प्लवङ्गमै monkeys, वध्यमान to kill, सोऽपि he too, रामेण by Rama, मोचित relieved, परे other, राक्षसा Rakshasas, अनृशंस्येन compassionate, रामेण by Rama, मोचिता got released.

As the monkeys attempted to kill him (Saardula), compassionate Rama released him and also the other Rakshasas.
वानरैरर्दितास्तेतुविक्रान्तैर्लघुविक्रमैः ।

पुनर्लङ्कामनुप्राप्ताश्वसन्तोनष्टचेतसः ।।6.29.29।।


विक्रान्तै by the valorous ones, लघुविक्रमै swift ones, वानरै Vanaras, अर्दिता harassed, ते those, तु those Rakshasas, श्वसन्त gasping, पुन again, लङ्काम् to Lanka, नष्टचेतस lost their senses, अनुप्राप्ता returned.

Harassed by the valorous and swift Vanaras, those Rakshasas lost their senses and returned to Lanka gasping and panting.
ततोदशग्रीवमुपस्थितास्तेचाराबहिर्नित्यचरानिशाचराः ।

गिरेस्सुवेलस्यसमीपवासिनंन्यवेदयन्भीमबलंमहाबलाः ।।6.29.30।।


तत: then, ते those, चारा the spies, बहिर् outside, नित्यचरा who are ever wandering, निशाचरा night rangers, उपस्थिता coming near, दशग्रीवम् the ten headed Ravana, न्यवेदयन् narrated, महाबला the great force (Vanara army), भीमबलम् of fierce strength, गिरे the mountain सुवेलस्य Suvela's, समीपवासिनम् residing nearby.

Then those night ranger spies, who are ever wandering outside, coming near, the ten headed Ravana, narrated about the great force (Vanara army), of fierce strength, residing near the mountain Suvela.
।। इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेएकोनत्रिंशस्सर्गः ।।
This is the end of the twenty ninth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
