[Saardula gives detailed descriptions of the Vanara army to Ravana.]

ततस्तमक्षोभ्यबलंलङ्काधिपतयेचराः ।

सुवेलेराघवंशैलेनिविष्टंप्रत्यवेदयन् ।।6.30.1।।


तत thereafter, चरा the spies, अक्षोभ्यबलम् unshakable army, तम् them, राघवम् Raghava, सुवेलेशैले Suvela mountain, निविष्टम् camped, लङ्काधिपतये to the king of Lanka, प्रत्यवेदयन् reported.

Thereafter, the spies reported to the king of Lanka that Raghava had camped with an unshakable army at the Suvela mountain.
चाराणांरावणश्श्रुत्वाप्राप्तंरामंमहाबलम् ।

जातोद्वेगोऽभवत्किञ्चिच्छार्दूलंवाक्यमब्रवीत् ।।6.30.2।।


रावण Ravana, महाबलम् great army, रामम् Rama, प्राप्तम् has camped, चाराणाम् from Spies, श्रुत्वा having heard, किञ्चित् a little, जातोद्वेग felt panicky, अभवत् became, शार्दूलम् to Saardula, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

On hearing from the spies that Rama has camped with a great army, Ravana got a little panicky and said these words to Saardula.
अयथावच्चतेवर्णोदीनश्चासिनिशाचर ।

नासिकच्चिदमित्राणांक्रुद्धानांवशमागतः ।।6.30.3।।


निशाचर forest ranger, ते your, वर्ण colour (face colour), आयथावत् च as it should be, दीनश्च piteous, अपि and also, क्रुद्धानाम् angry, अमित्राणाम् enemies, वशम् side, नआगतःकच्चित् not come to you and done anything.

"O Forest ranger! Your face is not as it should be and also pitiable. Hope the angry enemies have not done anything to you."
इतितेनानुशिष्टस्तुवाचंमन्दमुदीरयत् ।

तदाराक्षसशार्दूलंशार्दूलोभयविह्वलः ।।6.30.4।।


इति and then, तेन by him, अनुशिष्ट questioned, भयविह्वल overwhelmed by fear, शार्दूल to Saardula, तदा then, राक्षसशार्दूलम् tiger among Rakshasas, मन्दम् faint tone, वाचम् these words, उदीरयत् revealed.

And there after questioned by him (Ravana) Saardula revealed these words overwhelmed by fear, in faint tone to the tiger among Rakshasas.
नतेचारयितुंशक्याराजन्वानरपुङ्गवाः ।

विक्रान्ताबलवन्तश्चराघवेणचरक्षिताः ।।6.30.5।।


राजन् O king!, विक्रान्ता valiant, बलवन्तश्च highly powerful, राघवेण by Raghava, रक्षिताःच are protected also, ते with them, वानरपुङ्गवा Vanara heroes, चारयितुम् spy on, नशक्या not possible.

"O King! the Vanara heroes are valiant and highly powerful. They are also protected by Rama. It is not possible to spy on them."
नापिसम्भाषितुंशक्यास्सम्प्रश्नोऽत्रनलभ्यते ।

सर्वतोरक्ष्यतेपन्थावानरैःपर्वतोपमै ।।6.30.6।।


सम्भाषितुमपि even to converse, नशक्या not possible, अत्र there, सम्प्रश्न to question, नविद्यते not known, पन्था examine, सर्वत all over, पर्वतोपमै resembling mountains, वानरै Vanaras, रक्ष्यते guarded.

"It is not possible to converse with them or to question and or to examine, since they are guarded all over by mountains like Vanaras."
प्रविष्टमात्रेज्ञातोऽहंबलेतस्मिन्नचारिते ।

बलाद्गृहीतोरक्षोभिर्बहुधाऽस्मिविचालितः ।।6.30.7।।


तस्मिन् their, बले army, प्रविष्टमात्रे as soon as I entered into, अचारिते was observed, अहम् I, ज्ञात was detected, रक्षोभि even the guards, बलात् forcibly, गृहीत seized, बहुधा many, विचालित rolled on ground, अस्मि me.

"No sooner I entered their army, I was detected. I was forcibly seized by their guards and rolled on the ground."
जानुभिर्मुष्टिभिर्दन्तेस्तलैश्चाभिहतोभृशम् ।

परिणीतोऽस्मिहरिभिर्बलवद्भिरमर्षणैः ।।6.30.8।।


जानुभि with knees, मुष्टिभि with fist, दन्ते with teeth, तलैश्च and even with palms, भृशम् intensely, अभिहत beaten, अमर्षणै indignantly, हरिभि the monkeys, बलवद्भि in the army, परिणीत paraded, आस्मि me.

"The monkeys had beaten me with fists, bitten my palms with teeth, beaten me intensely and paraded me in the army indignantly."
परिणीयचसर्वत्रनीतोऽहंरामसंसदम् ।

रुधिरादिग्धसर्वाङ्गोविह्वलश्चलितेन्द्रियः ।।6.30.9।।


रुधिरादिग्धसर्वाङ्ग all limbs bleeding, विह्वल lost senses, चलितेन्द्रिय lost control of limbs, अहम् I, सर्वत्रपरिणीय all over paraded, रामसंसदम् to the assembly of Rama, नीत led.

"With all my limbs wet with bleeding, control over senses lost, after parading, I was led to the assembly of Rama."
हरिभिर्वध्यमानश्चयाचमानःकृताञ्जलिः ।

राघवेणपरित्रातोजीवामीतियदृच्छया ।।6.30.10।।


हरिभि monkeys also, वध्यमान smitten, कृताञ्जलि offering salutation with folded palms, याचमान pleading, राघवेण from Raghava, परित्रात protection, यदृच्छया by chance, जीवामीति alive.

"While smitten by the monkeys, offering salutation with folded hands, and pleading for protection from Raghava, luckily, I am alive."
एषशैलैश्शिलाभिश्चपूरयित्वामहार्णवम् ।

द्वारमाश्रित्यलङ्कायारामस्तिष्ठतिसायुधः ।।6.30.11।।


एष that way, राम Rama, शैलै rocks, शिलाभिश्च and even stones, महावर्णवम् great ocean, पूरयित्वा filled, सायुध equipped with arms, लङ्काया Lanka's, द्वारम् entrance, आश्रित्य taking position, तिष्ठति stands.

"Having filled the great ocean with rocks and stones in that way, taking position at the entrance of Lanka Rama stands equipped with arms."
गरुडव्यूहमास्थायसर्वतोहरिभिर्वृतः ।

मांविसृज्यमहातेजालङ्कामेवाभिवर्तते ।।6.30.12।।


महातेजा O glorious one, माम् me, विसृज्य freeing, हरिभि even monkeys, गरुडव्यूहम् in the form of Garuda, आस्थाय forming, पर्वत mountain, वृत surrounded, लङ्कामेव into Lanka, अभिवर्तते is advancing.

"O glorious King! After releasing me, Rama is advancing into Lanka surrounded by mountains like a monkey army in the form of Garuda."
पुराप्राकारमायातिक्षिप्रमेकतरंकुरु ।

सीतांवास्मैप्रयच्छाशुयुद्धंवाप्रदीयताम् ।।6.30.13।।


प्राकारम् boundary, पुराआयाति before reaching, क्षिप्रम् quickly, एकतरम् one thing, कुरु do, आशु you will, सीतांवा either Sita, प्रयच्छ set out, युद्धंवास्मै good war, प्रदीयताम् to give.

"Before Rama reaches the boundary, the wall, do one thing quickly. Either give away Sita or set out to give a good war."
मनसातंतदाप्रेक्ष्यतच्छ्रुत्वाराक्षसाधिपः ।

शार्दूलंसुमहद्वाक्यमथोवाचसरावणः ।।6.30.14।।


राक्षसाधिप Rakshasa king, स that, रावण Ravana, तदा then, तत् that, श्रुत्वा having heard, मनसा in his mind, तत् that, प्रेक्ष्य reviewing, अथ and then, शार्दूलम् Saardula, सुमहत् a good, वाक्यम् statement, उवाच uttered.

"Having heard what has been said by Saardula, Rakshasa king reviewed in his mind and made a good statement before Saardula."
यदिमांप्रतियुध्येरन्देवगन्धर्वदानवाः ।

नैवसीतांप्रदास्यामिसर्वलोकभयादपि ।।6.30.15।।


यदि even if, देवगन्धर्वदानव Devas Gandharvas, Danavas, मांप्रतियुध्येरन come to wage war with me, सीतां Sita, प्रदास्यामि give away, सर्वलोकभयादपि threat from all worlds, नैव will not.

"Even if Devas, Gandharvas and Danavas come to wage war with me and even if I have threats from all worlds, I will not give away Sita."
एवमुक्त्वामहातेजारावणःपुनरब्रवीत् ।

चरिताभवतासेनाकेऽत्रशूराःप्लवङ्गमाः ।।6.30.16।।


महातेजाः glorious, रावणः Ravana, एवम् in that manner, उक्त्वा having spoken, पुनः again, अब्रवीत् said, भवता by you, सेना army, चरिता went about, अत्र there, शूराः warriors, प्लवङ्गमाः among the monkeys.

Glorious Ravana having spoken like that, again said (to Saardula), "You moved about in the army (camp) there. Tell me who among the monkeys are warriors?"
कीदृशा: किंप्रभा: सौम्यवानरायेदुरासदाः ।

कस्यपुत्राश्चपौत्राश्चतत्त्वमाख्याहिराक्षस:।। 6.30.17।।


राक्षस Rakshasa, सौम्य gentle one, दुरासदा difficult to encounter, ये those, वानरा Vanaras, किम् प्रभा who are the powerful ones?, कीदृशा of what kind कस्य whose, पुत्रा sons (are they?), पौत्राश्च grandsons (are they?), तत् it, त्वम् you, आख्याहि may speak of.

"Gentle Saardula! Of those who are difficult to encounter, what is their description? Who are the powerful ones among them? Whose sons and grandsons, are they? You may speak."
तथात्रप्रतिपत्स्यामिज्ञात्वातेषांबलाबलम् ।

अवश्यंबलसङ् ख्यानंकर्तव्यंयुद्धमिच्छताम् ।।6.30.18।।


तेषाम् their, बलाबलम् strength and weakness, ज्ञात्वा knowing, अत्र here, तथा likewise, प्रतिपत्स्यामि I would like to know what to do, युद्धम् war, इच्छताम् desiring, सङ् ख्यानम् their numbers, अवश्यम् essential, बल strength, कर्तव्यं it is essential.

"Likewise knowing their strengths and weaknesses from you I wish to know what to do. It is essential to know their numbers and strength before the war."
अथैवमुक्तश्शार्दूलोरावणेनोत्तमश्चरः ।

इदंवचनमारेभेवक्तुंरावणसन्निधौ ।।6.30.19।।


अथ and now, रावणेन by Ravana, एवम् that way, उक्त having spoken, उत्तमःचर good spy, शार्दूल Saardula, रावणसन्निधौ in the presence of Ravana, इदम् thus, वचनम् these words, वक्तुम् to tell, आरेभे proceeded.

"When Ravana had spoken that way, good spy Saardula proceeded to tell these words in the presence of Ravana."
अथर्क्षरजसःपुत्रोयुधिराजासुदुर्जयः ।

गद्गदस्याथपुत्त्रोऽत्रजाम्बवानितिविश्रुतः ।।6.30.20।।


अथ and then, र्क्षरजसः Rksaraja's, पुत्रो son, in war, राजा king, सुदुर्जयः difficult to win over, युधि in war, विश्रुतः widely known, जाम्बवानिति he is known as Jambavan गद्गदस्याथ Gadgada's पुत्त्रोऽत्र son.

"Certainly, king Sugriva, the son of Rksharaja's, is difficult to be conquered in battle. Here is the son of Gadgada, famously called as Jambavan."
गद्गदस्यैवपुत्त्रोऽन्योगुरुपुत्र: शतक्रतोः ।

कदनंयस्यपुत्रेणकृतमेकेनरक्षसाम् ।।6.30.21।।


आन्य another, गद्गदस्यैव Gadgada's, पुत्त्र son, शतक्रतो an epithet of Indra, (known as Dhumra), गुरुपुत्र son of Brhaspati, (Kesari), यस्य his, पुत्रेण by his son Hanuman, एकेन alone, रक्षसाम् Rakshasas, कदनम् killing of many, कृतम् did.

Another son of Gadgada is Dhumra. One who killed many Rakshasas is Hanuman, the son of Kesari, who is the son of Brhaspati.
सुषेणश्चापिधर्मात्मापुत्रोधर्मस्यवीर्यवान् ।

सौम्यस्सोमात्मजश्चात्रराजन् दधिमुखःकपिः ।।6.30.22।।


राजन् O king!, धर्मात्म righteous self, पुत्र son, वीर्यवान् a valiant one, धर्मास्य of the Lord of death (Yamadharma), सुषेणश्च Sushena, अत्र here, स्सोमात्मज moon's son, सौम्य noble, कपि Vanara, अत्र here, दधिमुख Dadhimukha.

"O king! Here is a heroic and righteous Sushena, the son of the Lord of death (Yamadharma). Here is Dadhimukha son of noble moon."
सुमुखोदुर्मुखश्चात्रवेगदर्शीचवानरः ।

मृत्युर्वानररूपेणनूनंसृष्टस्स्वयम्भुवा ।।6.30.23।।


सुमुख Sumukha, दुर्मुखश्चात्र Durmukha, वेगदर्शीच Vegadarsi, वानर Vanaras, नूनम् surely, स्वयम्भुवा by the selfborn (Lord Brahma), वानररूपेण in Vanara form, सृष्ट created, मृत्यु God of death.

"Vanaras Sumukha, Durmukha and Vegadarsi are surely created by Brahma in the Vanara form of DeathGod."
पुत्त्रोहुतवहस्याथनीलस्सेनापतिस्स्वयम् ।

अनिलस्यचपुत्त्रोऽत्रहनूमानितिविश्रुतः ।।6.30.24।।


हुतवहस्य fire god's, पुत्त्र son, स्वयम् himself, सेनापति army chief, नील Nila, अथ here, हनूमानिति is Hanuman, विश्रुत widely known, अनिलस्यपुत्र son of wind god.

"The firegod's son indeed is the army chief known as Nila, and here is windgod's son widely known as Hanuman."
नप्ताशक्रस्यदुर्धर्षोबलवानङ्गदोयुवा ।

मैन्दश्चद्विविदश्चोभौबलिनावश्विसम्भवौ ।।6.30.25।।

पुत्त्रावैवस्वतस्यात्रपञ्चकालान्तकोपमाः ।

गजोगवाक्षोगवयश्शरभोगन्धमादनः ।।6.30.26।।

दशवानरकोट्यश्चशूराणांयुद्धकाङ्क्षिणाम् ।

श्रीमतांदेवपुत्त्राणांशेषंनाख्यातुमुत्सहे ।।6.30.27।।


शक्रस्य Indra's, नप्ता grandson, दुर्धर्ष indomitable, बलवान् powerful, युवा young, अङ्गद Angada, आश्विसम्भवौ twins born of Ashwini, बलिना strong, मैन्दश्च Mainda, द्विविदश्च and Dwivida, उभौ both, अथ now, वैनस्वतस्य Vynaswathasya's (Yama, the Lord of death ), पुत्त्रा sons, कालान्तकोपमा resemble god of death (spirit of time), गज: Gaja, गवाक्ष: Gavaksha, गवय: Gavaya, शरभः Sarabha, गन्धमादनः Gandhamadana, पञ्च five, शूराणाम् heroes, युद्धकाङ्क्षिणाम् desiring to wage war, दश ten, वानरकोट्यश्च crores of Vanaras, श्रीमताम् prosperous, देवपुत्राणाम् sons of gods, शेषम् remaining ones, आख्यातुम् to speak, नउत्सहे not possible.

"The indomitable and powerful young Angada is the grandson of Indra, the strong Mainda and Dwivida are both the twin sons of Ashwini Devas, Gaja, Gavaksha, Gavaya, Sarabha and Gandhamadana are the five sons of Yama, the god of death. There are ten crores of heroic and prosperous Vanaras desiring to wage war who are the sons of gods. It is not possible to speak of the remaining ones", said Saardula to Ravana."
पुत्त्रोदशरथस्यैषसिंहसंहनोयुवा ।

दूषणोनिहतोयेनखरश्चत्रिशिरास्तथा ।।6.30.28।।


सिंहसंहनन built like lion in form, एष that, युवा young one, दशरथस्य Dasaratha's, पुत्त्र son, त्रिशिरा Trisira.

"That young one whose build is like a lion is Dasaratha's son who slayed Dushana, even Khara, like wise Trisira."
नास्तिरामस्यसदृशोविक्रमेभुविकश्चन ।

विराधोनिहतोयेनकबन्धश्चान्तकोपमः ।।6.30.29।।


येन by whom, विराध Viradha, निहत was killed, अन्तकोपम one like Lord of death, कबन्धश्च even Kabhanda, रामस्य Rama's, विक्रमे by valour, सदृश equal, कश्चन perhaps, भूवि in this world, नास्ति not.

"Viradha and even Kabhanda who was like the Lord of death were killed by Rama. Perhaps there is none equal to Rama in valour in this world."
वक्तुंनशक्तोरामस्यनरःकश्चिद्गुणान् क्षितौ ।

जनस्थानगतायेनयावन्तोराक्षसाहताः ।।6.30.30।।


येन by whom, जनस्थानगता approaching Janasthana, यावन्त all, राक्षसा Rakshasas, हता were killed, रामस्य by Rama, गुणान् virtues, वक्तुम् to speak of, नर human, कश्चित् even, क्षितौ to recount, नशक्त not possible.

"It is not even possible to recount the virtues of Rama who killed all the Rakshasas approaching Janasthana."
लक्ष्मणश्चात्रधर्मात्मामातङ्गानामिवर्षभः ।

यस्यबाणपथंप्राप्यनजीवेदपिवासवः ।।6.30.31।।


यस्य his, बाणपथम् within the range of arrows, प्राप्य strike, वासवःअपि even Indra, नजीवेत् not be alive, धर्मात्मा righteous, मातङ्गानाम् proud elephant, ऋषभःइव like a bull, लक्ष्मणश्च Lakshmana's, अत्र here.

"Here is righteous Lakshmana, who is like a bull (foremost) resembling a proud elephant. Even Indra will not be alive with in the range of his arrows when he strikes."
श्वेतोज्योतिर्मुखश्चात्रभास्करस्यात्मसम्भवौ ।

वरुणस्यचपुत्त्रोऽन्योःहेमकूटःप्लवङ्गमः ।।6.30.32।।

विश्वकर्मसुतोवीरोनलःप्लवगसत्तमः ।

विक्रान्तोबलवानत्रवसुपुत्रस्सदुर्धरः ।।6.30.33।।


भास्करस्य Sun god's, आत्मसम्भवौ sprung from Sun god, श्वेत Swetha, ज्योतिर्मुखश्च Jyothirmukha, वरुणस्य Varuna's, अन्यःपुत्त्र other son, हेमकूट Hemakuta, प्लवङ्गम monkey, विश्वकर्मसुत son of Vishwakarma, वीर heroes, प्लवगसत्तम foremost among the monkeys, नल Nala, विक्रान्त valiant, बलवान् gallant, वसुपुत्र son of Vasu, विक्रान्त valiant, वेगवान् swift in action, वसुपुत्त्र son of Vasu, स he, दुर्धर is Durdhara, अत्र here.

"Here are Swetha and Jyothirmukha sons of Sun god Hemakuta another son of Varuna Nala the foremost among the monkey heroes is the valiant son of Vishwakarma and Durdhara of swift action, the son of Vasu."
राक्षसानांवरिष्ठश्चतवभ्रातावीभीषणः ।

प्रतिगृह्यपुरींलङ्कांराघवस्यहितेरतः ।।6.30.34।।


राक्षसानाम् of the Rakshasas, वरिष्ठश्च jewel, तव your, भ्राता brother, विभीषण Vibheeshana, राघवस्य Raghava's, हिते wellwisher, रत remains, लङ्कापुरीम् city of Lanka, प्रतिगृह्य received.

"Here is your brother Vibheeshana the jewel among Rakshasas, who remains as a wellwisher of Rama and has received the city of Lanka (to whom Rama has offered Lanka)."
इतिसर्वंसमाख्यातंतवेदंवानरंबलम् ।

सुवेलेऽधिष्ठितंशैलेशेषकार्येभवान्गतिः ।।6.30.35।।


इति this, सुवेलेशैले on Suvela mountain, अधिष्ठितम् stationed, इदम् thus, सर्वम् everything, वानरंबलम् Vanara strength, तवइदं to you this, समाख्यातम् described, शेषकार्ये rest of the task, भवान् your, गति decide.

"I have described to you everything about the Vanara strength stationed on Suvela mountain. You may decide the rest of the task to be done."
