[Saardula gives detailed descriptions of the Vanara army to Ravana.]

tatastamakṣōbhyabalaṅlaṅkādhipatayēcarāḥ .

suvēlērāghavaṅśailēniviṣṭaṅpratyavēdayan ।।6.30.1।।


tata thereafter, carā the spies, akṣōbhyabalam unshakable army, tam them, rāghavam Raghava, suvēlēśailē Suvela mountain, niviṣṭam camped, laṅkādhipatayē to the king of Lanka, pratyavēdayan reported.

Thereafter, the spies reported to the king of Lanka that Raghava had camped with an unshakable army at the Suvela mountain.
cārāṇāṅrāvaṇaśśrutvāprāptaṅrāmaṅmahābalam .

jātōdvēgō.bhavatkiñcicchārdūlaṅvākyamabravīt ।।6.30.2।।


rāvaṇa Ravana, mahābalam great army, rāmam Rama, prāptam has camped, cārāṇām from Spies, śrutvā having heard, kiñcit a little, jātōdvēga felt panicky, abhavat became, śārdūlam to Saardula, vākyam these words, abravīt said.

On hearing from the spies that Rama has camped with a great army, Ravana got a little panicky and said these words to Saardula.
ayathāvaccatēvarṇōdīnaścāsiniśācara .

nāsikaccidamitrāṇāṅkruddhānāṅvaśamāgataḥ ।।6.30.3।।


niśācara forest ranger, tē your, varṇa colour (face colour), āyathāvat ca as it should be, dīnaśca piteous, api and also, kruddhānām angry, amitrāṇām enemies, vaśam side, naāgataḥkaccit not come to you and done anything.

"O Forest ranger! Your face is not as it should be and also pitiable. Hope the angry enemies have not done anything to you."
ititēnānuśiṣṭastuvācaṅmandamudīrayat .

tadārākṣasaśārdūlaṅśārdūlōbhayavihvalaḥ ।।6.30.4।।


iti and then, tēna by him, anuśiṣṭa questioned, bhayavihvala overwhelmed by fear, śārdūla to Saardula, tadā then, rākṣasaśārdūlam tiger among Rakshasas, mandam faint tone, vācam these words, udīrayat revealed.

And there after questioned by him (Ravana) Saardula revealed these words overwhelmed by fear, in faint tone to the tiger among Rakshasas.
natēcārayituṅśakyārājanvānarapuṅgavāḥ .

vikrāntābalavantaścarāghavēṇacarakṣitāḥ ।।6.30.5।।


rājan O king!, vikrāntā valiant, balavantaśca highly powerful, rāghavēṇa by Raghava, rakṣitāḥca are protected also, tē with them, vānarapuṅgavā Vanara heroes, cārayitum spy on, naśakyā not possible.

"O King! the Vanara heroes are valiant and highly powerful. They are also protected by Rama. It is not possible to spy on them."
nāpisambhāṣituṅśakyāssampraśnō.tranalabhyatē .

sarvatōrakṣyatēpanthāvānaraiḥparvatōpamai ।।6.30.6।।


sambhāṣitumapi even to converse, naśakyā not possible, atra there, sampraśna to question, navidyatē not known, panthā examine, sarvata all over, parvatōpamai resembling mountains, vānarai Vanaras, rakṣyatē guarded.

"It is not possible to converse with them or to question and or to examine, since they are guarded all over by mountains like Vanaras."
praviṣṭamātrējñātō.haṅbalētasminnacāritē .

balādgṛhītōrakṣōbhirbahudhā.smivicālitaḥ ।।6.30.7।।


tasmin their, balē army, praviṣṭamātrē as soon as I entered into, acāritē was observed, aham I, jñāta was detected, rakṣōbhi even the guards, balāt forcibly, gṛhīta seized, bahudhā many, vicālita rolled on ground, asmi me.

"No sooner I entered their army, I was detected. I was forcibly seized by their guards and rolled on the ground."
jānubhirmuṣṭibhirdantēstalaiścābhihatōbhṛśam .

pariṇītō.smiharibhirbalavadbhiramarṣaṇaiḥ ।।6.30.8।।


jānubhi with knees, muṣṭibhi with fist, dantē with teeth, talaiśca and even with palms, bhṛśam intensely, abhihata beaten, amarṣaṇai indignantly, haribhi the monkeys, balavadbhi in the army, pariṇīta paraded, āsmi me.

"The monkeys had beaten me with fists, bitten my palms with teeth, beaten me intensely and paraded me in the army indignantly."
pariṇīyacasarvatranītō.haṅrāmasaṅsadam .

rudhirādigdhasarvāṅgōvihvalaścalitēndriyaḥ ।।6.30.9।।


rudhirādigdhasarvāṅga all limbs bleeding, vihvala lost senses, calitēndriya lost control of limbs, aham I, sarvatrapariṇīya all over paraded, rāmasaṅsadam to the assembly of Rama, nīta led.

"With all my limbs wet with bleeding, control over senses lost, after parading, I was led to the assembly of Rama."
haribhirvadhyamānaścayācamānaḥkṛtāñjaliḥ .

rāghavēṇaparitrātōjīvāmītiyadṛcchayā ।।6.30.10।।


haribhi monkeys also, vadhyamāna smitten, kṛtāñjali offering salutation with folded palms, yācamāna pleading, rāghavēṇa from Raghava, paritrāta protection, yadṛcchayā by chance, jīvāmīti alive.

"While smitten by the monkeys, offering salutation with folded hands, and pleading for protection from Raghava, luckily, I am alive."
ēṣaśailaiśśilābhiścapūrayitvāmahārṇavam .

dvāramāśrityalaṅkāyārāmastiṣṭhatisāyudhaḥ ।।6.30.11।।


ēṣa that way, rāma Rama, śailai rocks, śilābhiśca and even stones, mahāvarṇavam great ocean, pūrayitvā filled, sāyudha equipped with arms, laṅkāyā Lanka's, dvāram entrance, āśritya taking position, tiṣṭhati stands.

"Having filled the great ocean with rocks and stones in that way, taking position at the entrance of Lanka Rama stands equipped with arms."
garuḍavyūhamāsthāyasarvatōharibhirvṛtaḥ .

māṅvisṛjyamahātējālaṅkāmēvābhivartatē ।।6.30.12।।


mahātējā O glorious one, mām me, visṛjya freeing, haribhi even monkeys, garuḍavyūham in the form of Garuda, āsthāya forming, parvata mountain, vṛta surrounded, laṅkāmēva into Lanka, abhivartatē is advancing.

"O glorious King! After releasing me, Rama is advancing into Lanka surrounded by mountains like a monkey army in the form of Garuda."
purāprākāramāyātikṣipramēkataraṅkuru .

sītāṅvāsmaiprayacchāśuyuddhaṅvāpradīyatām ।।6.30.13।।


prākāram boundary, purāāyāti before reaching, kṣipram quickly, ēkataram one thing, kuru do, āśu you will, sītāṅvā either Sita, prayaccha set out, yuddhaṅvāsmai good war, pradīyatām to give.

"Before Rama reaches the boundary, the wall, do one thing quickly. Either give away Sita or set out to give a good war."
manasātaṅtadāprēkṣyatacchrutvārākṣasādhipaḥ .

śārdūlaṅsumahadvākyamathōvācasarāvaṇaḥ ।।6.30.14।।


rākṣasādhipa Rakshasa king, sa that, rāvaṇa Ravana, tadā then, tat that, śrutvā having heard, manasā in his mind, tat that, prēkṣya reviewing, atha and then, śārdūlam Saardula, sumahat a good, vākyam statement, uvāca uttered.

"Having heard what has been said by Saardula, Rakshasa king reviewed in his mind and made a good statement before Saardula."
yadimāṅpratiyudhyērandēvagandharvadānavāḥ .

naivasītāṅpradāsyāmisarvalōkabhayādapi ।।6.30.15।।


yadi even if, dēvagandharvadānava Devas Gandharvas, Danavas, māṅpratiyudhyērana come to wage war with me, sītāṅ Sita, pradāsyāmi give away, sarvalōkabhayādapi threat from all worlds, naiva will not.

"Even if Devas, Gandharvas and Danavas come to wage war with me and even if I have threats from all worlds, I will not give away Sita."
ēvamuktvāmahātējārāvaṇaḥpunarabravīt .

caritābhavatāsēnākē.traśūrāḥplavaṅgamāḥ ।।6.30.16।।


mahātējāḥ glorious, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, ēvam in that manner, uktvā having spoken, punaḥ again, abravīt said, bhavatā by you, sēnā army, caritā went about, atra there, śūrāḥ warriors, plavaṅgamāḥ among the monkeys.

Glorious Ravana having spoken like that, again said (to Saardula), "You moved about in the army (camp) there. Tell me who among the monkeys are warriors?"
kīdṛśā: kiṅprabhā: saumyavānarāyēdurāsadāḥ .

kasyaputrāścapautrāścatattvamākhyāhirākṣasa:।। 6.30.17।।


rākṣasa Rakshasa, saumya gentle one, durāsadā difficult to encounter, yē those, vānarā Vanaras, kim prabhā who are the powerful ones?, kīdṛśā of what kind kasya whose, putrā sons (are they?), pautrāśca grandsons (are they?), tat it, tvam you, ākhyāhi may speak of.

"Gentle Saardula! Of those who are difficult to encounter, what is their description? Who are the powerful ones among them? Whose sons and grandsons, are they? You may speak."
tathātrapratipatsyāmijñātvātēṣāṅbalābalam .

avaśyaṅbalasaṅ khyānaṅkartavyaṅyuddhamicchatām ।।6.30.18।।


tēṣām their, balābalam strength and weakness, jñātvā knowing, atra here, tathā likewise, pratipatsyāmi I would like to know what to do, yuddham war, icchatām desiring, saṅ khyānam their numbers, avaśyam essential, bala strength, kartavyaṅ it is essential.

"Likewise knowing their strengths and weaknesses from you I wish to know what to do. It is essential to know their numbers and strength before the war."
athaivamuktaśśārdūlōrāvaṇēnōttamaścaraḥ .

idaṅvacanamārēbhēvaktuṅrāvaṇasannidhau ।।6.30.19।।


atha and now, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, ēvam that way, ukta having spoken, uttamaḥcara good spy, śārdūla Saardula, rāvaṇasannidhau in the presence of Ravana, idam thus, vacanam these words, vaktum to tell, ārēbhē proceeded.

"When Ravana had spoken that way, good spy Saardula proceeded to tell these words in the presence of Ravana."
atharkṣarajasaḥputrōyudhirājāsudurjayaḥ .

gadgadasyāthaputtrō.trajāmbavānitiviśrutaḥ ।।6.30.20।।


atha and then, rkṣarajasaḥ Rksaraja's, putrō son, in war, rājā king, sudurjayaḥ difficult to win over, yudhi in war, viśrutaḥ widely known, jāmbavāniti he is known as Jambavan gadgadasyātha Gadgada's puttrō.tra son.

"Certainly, king Sugriva, the son of Rksharaja's, is difficult to be conquered in battle. Here is the son of Gadgada, famously called as Jambavan."
gadgadasyaivaputtrō.nyōguruputra: śatakratōḥ .

kadanaṅyasyaputrēṇakṛtamēkēnarakṣasām ।।6.30.21।।


ānya another, gadgadasyaiva Gadgada's, puttra son, śatakratō an epithet of Indra, (known as Dhumra), guruputra son of Brhaspati, (Kesari), yasya his, putrēṇa by his son Hanuman, ēkēna alone, rakṣasām Rakshasas, kadanam killing of many, kṛtam did.

Another son of Gadgada is Dhumra. One who killed many Rakshasas is Hanuman, the son of Kesari, who is the son of Brhaspati.
suṣēṇaścāpidharmātmāputrōdharmasyavīryavān .

saumyassōmātmajaścātrarājan dadhimukhaḥkapiḥ ।।6.30.22।।


rājan O king!, dharmātma righteous self, putra son, vīryavān a valiant one, dharmāsya of the Lord of death (Yamadharma), suṣēṇaśca Sushena, atra here, ssōmātmaja moon's son, saumya noble, kapi Vanara, atra here, dadhimukha Dadhimukha.

"O king! Here is a heroic and righteous Sushena, the son of the Lord of death (Yamadharma). Here is Dadhimukha son of noble moon."
sumukhōdurmukhaścātravēgadarśīcavānaraḥ .

mṛtyurvānararūpēṇanūnaṅsṛṣṭassvayambhuvā ।।6.30.23।।


sumukha Sumukha, durmukhaścātra Durmukha, vēgadarśīca Vegadarsi, vānara Vanaras, nūnam surely, svayambhuvā by the selfborn (Lord Brahma), vānararūpēṇa in Vanara form, sṛṣṭa created, mṛtyu God of death.

"Vanaras Sumukha, Durmukha and Vegadarsi are surely created by Brahma in the Vanara form of Death-God."
puttrōhutavahasyāthanīlassēnāpatissvayam .

anilasyacaputtrō.trahanūmānitiviśrutaḥ ।।6.30.24।।


hutavahasya fire -god's, puttra son, svayam himself, sēnāpati army chief, nīla Nila, atha here, hanūmāniti is Hanuman, viśruta widely known, anilasyaputra son of wind god.

"The fire-god's son indeed is the army chief known as Nila, and here is wind-god's son widely known as Hanuman."
naptāśakrasyadurdharṣōbalavānaṅgadōyuvā .

maindaścadvividaścōbhaubalināvaśvisambhavau ।।6.30.25।।

puttrāvaivasvatasyātrapañcakālāntakōpamāḥ .

gajōgavākṣōgavayaśśarabhōgandhamādanaḥ ।।6.30.26।।

daśavānarakōṭyaścaśūrāṇāṅyuddhakāṅkṣiṇām .

śrīmatāṅdēvaputtrāṇāṅśēṣaṅnākhyātumutsahē ।।6.30.27।।


śakrasya Indra's, naptā grandson, durdharṣa indomitable, balavān powerful, yuvā young, aṅgada Angada, āśvisambhavau twins born of Ashwini, balinā strong, maindaśca Mainda, dvividaśca and Dwivida, ubhau both, atha now, vainasvatasya Vynaswathasya's (Yama, the Lord of death ), puttrā sons, kālāntakōpamā resemble god of death (spirit of time), gaja: Gaja, gavākṣa: Gavaksha, gavaya: Gavaya, śarabhaḥ Sarabha, gandhamādanaḥ Gandhamadana, pañca five, śūrāṇām heroes, yuddhakāṅkṣiṇām desiring to wage war, daśa ten, vānarakōṭyaśca crores of Vanaras, śrīmatām prosperous, dēvaputrāṇām sons of gods, śēṣam remaining ones, ākhyātum to speak, nautsahē not possible.

"The indomitable and powerful young Angada is the grandson of Indra, the strong Mainda and Dwivida are both the twin sons of Ashwini Devas, Gaja, Gavaksha, Gavaya, Sarabha and Gandhamadana are the five sons of Yama, the god of death. There are ten crores of heroic and prosperous Vanaras desiring to wage war who are the sons of gods. It is not possible to speak of the remaining ones", said Saardula to Ravana."
puttrōdaśarathasyaiṣasiṅhasaṅhanōyuvā .

dūṣaṇōnihatōyēnakharaścatriśirāstathā ।।6.30.28।।


siṅhasaṅhanana built like lion in form, ēṣa that, yuvā young one, daśarathasya Dasaratha's, puttra son, triśirā Trisira.

"That young one whose build is like a lion is Dasaratha's son who slayed Dushana, even Khara, like wise Trisira."
nāstirāmasyasadṛśōvikramēbhuvikaścana .

virādhōnihatōyēnakabandhaścāntakōpamaḥ ।।6.30.29।।


yēna by whom, virādha Viradha, nihata was killed, antakōpama one like Lord of death, kabandhaśca even Kabhanda, rāmasya Rama's, vikramē by valour, sadṛśa equal, kaścana perhaps, bhūvi in this world, nāsti not.

"Viradha and even Kabhanda who was like the Lord of death were killed by Rama. Perhaps there is none equal to Rama in valour in this world."
vaktuṅnaśaktōrāmasyanaraḥkaścidguṇān kṣitau .

janasthānagatāyēnayāvantōrākṣasāhatāḥ ।।6.30.30।।


yēna by whom, janasthānagatā approaching Janasthana, yāvanta all, rākṣasā Rakshasas, hatā were killed, rāmasya by Rama, guṇān virtues, vaktum to speak of, nara human, kaścit even, kṣitau to recount, naśakta not possible.

"It is not even possible to recount the virtues of Rama who killed all the Rakshasas approaching Janasthana."
lakṣmaṇaścātradharmātmāmātaṅgānāmivarṣabhaḥ .

yasyabāṇapathaṅprāpyanajīvēdapivāsavaḥ ।।6.30.31।।


yasya his, bāṇapatham within the range of arrows, prāpya strike, vāsavaḥapi even Indra, najīvēt not be alive, dharmātmā righteous, mātaṅgānām proud elephant, ṛṣabhaḥiva like a bull, lakṣmaṇaśca Lakshmana's, atra here.

"Here is righteous Lakshmana, who is like a bull (foremost) resembling a proud elephant. Even Indra will not be alive with in the range of his arrows when he strikes."
śvētōjyōtirmukhaścātrabhāskarasyātmasambhavau .

varuṇasyacaputtrō.nyōḥhēmakūṭaḥplavaṅgamaḥ ।।6.30.32।।

viśvakarmasutōvīrōnalaḥplavagasattamaḥ .

vikrāntōbalavānatravasuputrassadurdharaḥ ।।6.30.33।।


bhāskarasya Sun god's, ātmasambhavau sprung from Sun god, śvēta Swetha, jyōtirmukhaśca Jyothirmukha, varuṇasya Varuna's, anyaḥputtra other son, hēmakūṭa Hemakuta, plavaṅgama monkey, viśvakarmasuta son of Vishwakarma, vīra heroes, plavagasattama foremost among the monkeys, nala Nala, vikrānta valiant, balavān gallant, vasuputra son of Vasu, vikrānta valiant, vēgavān swift in action, vasuputtra son of Vasu, sa he, durdhara is Durdhara, atra here.

"Here are Swetha and Jyothirmukha sons of Sun god; Hemakuta another son of Varuna; Nala the foremost among the monkey heroes is the valiant son of Vishwakarma and Durdhara of swift action, the son of Vasu."
rākṣasānāṅvariṣṭhaścatavabhrātāvībhīṣaṇaḥ .

pratigṛhyapurīṅlaṅkāṅrāghavasyahitērataḥ ।।6.30.34।।


rākṣasānām of the Rakshasas, variṣṭhaśca jewel, tava your, bhrātā brother, vibhīṣaṇa Vibheeshana, rāghavasya Raghava's, hitē wellwisher, rata remains, laṅkāpurīm city of Lanka, pratigṛhya received.

"Here is your brother Vibheeshana the jewel among Rakshasas, who remains as a wellwisher of Rama and has received the city of Lanka (to whom Rama has offered Lanka)."
itisarvaṅsamākhyātaṅtavēdaṅvānaraṅbalam .

suvēlē.dhiṣṭhitaṅśailēśēṣakāryēbhavāngatiḥ ।।6.30.35।।


iti this, suvēlēśailē on Suvela mountain, adhiṣṭhitam stationed, idam thus, sarvam everything, vānaraṅbalam Vanara strength, tavaidaṅ to you this, samākhyātam described, śēṣakāryē rest of the task, bhavān your, gati decide.

"I have described to you everything about the Vanara strength stationed on Suvela mountain. You may decide the rest of the task to be done."
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍētriṅśassargaḥ ।।
