[Sita wails at the sight of Rama's head presented by Ravana to her. Ravana abruptly leaves Ashoka grove.]

sāsītātacchirōdṛṣṭavātaccakārmukamuttamam .

sugrīvapratisaṅpargamākhyātaṅcahanūmatā ।।6.32.1।।

nayanēmukhavarṇaṅcabhartustatsadṛśaṅmukham .

kēśān kēśāntadēśaṅcataṅcacūḍāmaṇiṅśubham ।।6.32.2।।

ētaissarvērabhijñānairabhijñāyasuduḥkhitā .

nijagarhēcakaikēyīṅkrōśantīkurarīyathā ।।6.32.3।।


sāsītā that Sita, tat then, śiraḥ head, uttamam esteemed, tat that, kārmukaṅca and the bow, hanūmatā by Hanuman, ākhyātam described by, sugrīpratisaṅsargam friendship with Sugriva, nayanē the eyes, mukhavarṇaṅca and complexion of the face, bhartuḥ husband 's, padṛśam the eyes, tat that, mukham face, kēsān the hair, kēśāntadēśaṅca curls at the end of hair, tam them, śubham auspicious cūḍāmaṇiṅca and Chudamani, dṛṣṭavā seeing, ētaiḥ those sarvaiḥ all, abhijñānaiḥ recognizing, abhijñāya perceiving similarity, suduḥkhitā very sad, kurarīyathā like a deer, krōśantī crying, kaikēyīm Kaikeyi, nijagarhēca abused.

On seeing the esteemed Rama's head and bow, remembering the description made by Hanuman about the friendship with Sugriva; thinking of the eyes, complexion of the face, the hair, and curls of her husband at the end Sita recognized the auspicious Chudamani. Identifying all those marks to be like Rama's she felt very sad and cried like a deer and abused Kaikeyi.
sakāmābhavakaikēyīhatō.yaṅkulanandanaḥ .

kulamutsāditaṅsarvaṅtvayākalahaśīlayā ।।6.32.4।।


kaikēyi O Kaikeyi, sakāmā desire fulfilled, bhava of yours, kulanandanaḥ delight of the race, āyam this, hataḥ killed, kalahaśīlayā one who is given to creating quarrel, tvayā by you, sarvam all, kulam race, utsāditam have ruined.

"O Kaikeyi! Your desire is fulfilled with the killing of the delight of the race. You, who are given to creating quarrel have ruined the race."
āryēṇakiṅtēkaikēyī kṛtaṅrāmēṇavipriyam .

yanmayācīravasanastvayāprasthāpitōvanam ।।6.32.5।।


āryēṇa to the prince, rāmēṇa to Rama, kaikēyī Kaikeyi, kimaṅ what, vipriyam harm, kṛtaṅnu you did, yat to him, cīravasanam bark robes, tvayā by you, mayā with me, vanam forest, prasthāpitaḥ cried.

"Kaikeyi, you have given bark robes to prince Rama and sent him to the forest with me. What harm has he done for you? Thinking of this again and again Sita cried."
ēvamuktvātuvaidēhīvēpamānātapasvinī .

jagāmajagatīṅbālāchinnātukadaḷīyathā ।।6.32.6।।


tapasvinī miserable one, bālā young, vaidēhī Vaidehi, ēvam in that way, uktvā having said, vēpamānā trembling, chinnā cut off, kadaḷī banana, jagatīm on to the ground, jagāma fell down.

That miserable young, Vaidehi, having said so, fell on the ground trembling like a cut off banana plant.
sāmuhūrtātsamāśvāsyapratilabhyacacētanām .

tacchirassamupāghrāyavilalāsāyatēkṣaṇā ।।6.32.7।।


āyutēkṣaṇā broad-eyed one, sā she, atha and then, muhūrtāt for a while, samāśvāsya regaining, cētanām consciousness, parilabhya remaining behind, tat that, śiraḥ head, samupāghrāya sitting close by, vilalāsa lamented.

Broad-eyed Sita, regaining her consciousness after a while, sat close to the head of Rama and lamented.
hāhatā.smimahābāhō vīravratamanuvrata .

imāṅtēpaścimāvasthāṅgatā.smividhavākṛtā ।।6.32.8।।


mahābāhō mighty-armed, vīravratam heroic vow, anuvrata following, hā alas, hatāsmi you are killed, tē you, imām thus, paścimāvasthām in the last state of life, gatāāsmi live to see you, vidhavā widowed, kṛtā am done.

"O mighty-armed one! Alas you are killed while following heroic vow. I live to see you in the last state of your life, widowed. I am done."
prathamaṅmaraṇaṅnāryābharturvaiguṇyamucyatē .

suvṛtta: ssādhuvṛttāyāssamvṛttastvaṅmamāgrataḥ ।।6.32.9।।


suvṛttaḥ faithful to one's vows, prathamam in front, bhartuḥ husband 's, maraṇam death, nāryāḥ O noble one, vaiguṇyam fault, ucyatē is said to be, tvam your, sādhuvṛttāyāḥ of good conduct, mama I, agrataḥ in front, samvṛttaṅ virtuous one.

"O Rama, you are faithful to your vows, a noble one! It is said that because of a woman's faults, the husband will die. It is not even so as you died in front of a virtuous woman of good conduct."
duḥkhādduḥkhaṅprapannāyāmagnāyāśśōkasāgarē .

yōhimāmudyatanistrātuṅsō.pitvaṅvinipātitaḥ ।।6.32.10।।


duḥkhāt in grief, duḥkham grief, prapannāyāḥ reaching at, śōkasāgarē ocean of sorrow, magnāyāḥ filled, yaḥ who, tvam you, trātu, to save udyataḥ have come, sō.pi you are also, vinipātitaḥ are killed.

"I am in grief and filled with an ocean of sorrow. You who have come to save me and are also killed."
sāśvaśrūrmamakausalyātvayāputrēṇarāghava: .

vatsēnēvayathādhēnurvivatsāvatsalākṛtā ।।6.32.11।।


rāghava Raghava, mama my, śvaśrūḥ mother-in-law, kausalyā Kausalya, vatsalā dear dhēnuḥyathā like a cow, putrēṇa about son, tvayā likewise, vatsēnē about her dear son, vivatsākṛtā is separated.

"O Raghava! Even my mother-in-law Kausalya is separated from her dear son just as cow is separated from calf."
āddiṣṭaṅdīrghamāyustēyairacintyaparākrama .

anṛtaṅvacanaṅtēṣāmalpāyurapirāghava ।।6.32.12।।


rāghava Raghava, acintyaparākrama of incomprehensible valour, tē you, āyuḥ life, dīrgham long, udadiṣṭam predicted by astrologers, rāghava Raghava, tēṣām their, vacanam word, ānṛtam is falsified, alpāyuḥ short life, asi has been.

"O Raghava of incomprehensible valour! the words predicted by astrologers that your life is long is falsified. Your life has been short."
athavānaśyatiprajñāprājñasyāpisatastava .

pacatyēnaṅyathākālōbhūtānāṅprabhavō.hyayam ।।6.32.13।।


athavā or else, prājñāsyāpisataḥ even the learned ones, tana diffused, prajñā wisdom, naśyati lost, yathā likewise, bhūtānām living beings, prabhavaḥ effect, āyam this, kālaḥ time, ēvam in that way, pacati caused.

"Or else, even the wisdom of a learned one is diffused and lost perhaps! the effect of time which is the cause of all living beings has caused this."
adṛṣṭaṅmṛtyumāpannaḥkasmāttvaṅnayaśāstravit .

vyasanānāmupāyajñaḥkuśalōhyasivarjanē ।।6.32.14।।


nayaśāstravit knower of all sastras, tvam you, kasmāt how did you meet, adṛṣṭam by chance, mṛtyum death, āpannaḥ overtakes you, upāyajñaḥ ways of getting out, vyasanānām calamities, varjanē to ward off, kuśalaḥ capable, asihi you are also.

"You are the knower of all sastras, and capable of warding off all calamities. How did death have a chance to meet you and overtake?"
tathātvaṅsampariṣvajyaraudrayā.tinṛśaṅsayā .

kāḷarātyrāmamācchidyahṛtaḥkamalalōcana:।। 6.32.15।।


kamalalōcana lotus-eyed one, atinṛśaṅsayā most horrible, raudrayā cruel, kāḷarātyrā dark night, tathā likewise, sampariṣvajya after losing contact, mama me, ācchidya cutting off, hṛtaḥ killed.

"O lotus-eyed Rama! After you have lost contact with me, the most horrible cruel night has killed you cutting you off from me."
upaśēṣēmahābāhō: māṅvihāyatapasvinīm .

priyāmivasamālaśiṣyapṛthivīṅpuruṣarṣabha ।।6.32.16।।


mahābāhō mighty-armed one, puruṣarṣabha bull among men, tapasvinīm noble one, mām me, vihāya sky, pṛthivīm the earth, priyāmiva like beloved, samālaśiṣya embraced, upaśēṣē more over sleeping.

"O mighty-armed one! A bull among men and a noble one, you are embracing the earth as though it is your beloved and sleeping leaving me in the sky."
arcitaṅsatataṅyattadgandhamālyairmayātava .

idaṅtēmapratiyaṅvīradhanuḥkāñcānabhūṣaṇam ।।6.32.17।।


vīra hero, idama this, mayā my, tava you, satatam ever, yatnāt diligently, gandhamālyaiḥ with sandal and flowers, arcitam worshipped, mapratiyam with utmost devotion, kāñcanabhūṣaṇam decorated with gold, tē your, dhanuḥ bow.

"O Hero! This bow that was decorated with gold was always worshipped with sandal and flowers diligently by you and me with utmost devotion."
pitrādaśarathēnatvaṅśvaśurēṇamamānagha: .

sarvaiścapitṛbhissārthaṅnūnaṅsvargēsamāgataḥ ।।6.32.18।।


anagha sinless one, tvam by you, mama me, śvaśurēṇa with father-in-law, pitrā father, daśarathēna by Dasaratha, sarvaiḥ all, pitṛbhi grand fathers ssārdam with all, nūnam surely, svargē heaven, samāgataḥ reached.

"O Sinless one! Surely you have reached heaven where your father, my father-in-law Dasaratha and your grandfathers have reached."
divinakṣatrabhūtastvaṅmahātkarmakṛtapriyam .

puṇyaṅrājarṣivaṅśaṅtvamātmanassamupēkṣasē ।।6.32.19।।


divi heaven, nakṣatrabhūtam luminaries of the sky, priyam dear, mahat great, karma deed, kṛtā done, tvam you, ātmanaḥ your own, puṇyam merit, rājarṣivaṅśam race of royal sages, samupēkṣasē will be seeing.

"In heaven, you will be seeing luminaries of the sky who are dear, who have done great deeds and earned merit and the royal sages of your own race."
kiṅmāṅnaprēkṣasērājan kiṅmāṅnapratibhāṣasē .

bālāṅbālyēnasamprāptāṅbhāryāṅmāṅsahacāriṇīm ।।6.32.20।।


rājan O king!, bālyēna in young age, bālām from a young age, samprāptām have come to you, sahacāriṇīm companion, bhāryām our wife also, mām me, naprēkṣasē you do not see, mām me, kiṅnā why, māṅpratibhāṣasē you are not talking to me.

"O King! I have come to you while I was young. I am your companion and wife also. Why are you not seeing me? Why are you not talking to me?"
saṅśrutaṅgṛhṇatāpāṇiṅcariṣyāmītiyattvayā .

smaratanmamakākutsthanayamāmapiduḥkhitām ।।6.32.21।।


kākutstha Kakutstha, pāṇim hand, gṛhṇatā while held, tvayā by you, cariṣyāmiiti will be with you, yat likewise, saṅśrutam promised, tat that, smaranāma remember, duḥkhitam sad, māmapi me too, naya such a one.

"O Kakutstha! while you held my hand (at the time of marriage) you promised that you will be with me and likewise promised to take me, a (wretched one) with you to the other world. Remembering that I am sad."
kasmānmāmapahāyatvaṅgatōgatimatāṅvara .

asmāllōkādamuṅlōkaṅtyaktvāmāmapiduḥkhitām ।।6.32.22।।


gatimatām jewel among those who have good status, vara O jewel, tvam you, mām me, apahāya abandoning, kasmāt why have you, gataḥ gone, dukhiḥtām I am pained, māmapi I am, tyaktvā deserting, asmāt from this, lōkāt world, amum heaven, lōkam world.

"O Jewel among those who attained good state! Why have you gone abandoning me dear? To which world have you gone from here? I am pained by your deserting me."
kalyāṇairucitaṅyattatpariṣvaktaṅmayaivatu .

kravyādaistaccharīraṅtēmānaṅviparikṛṣyatē ।।6.32.23।।


kalyāṇaiḥ auspicious, rucitam decorated, yattat that which, mayaiva by me, alone pariṣvaktam embracing, tat that, śarīram body, mānam with great respect, kravyādaiḥ cruel animals, iparikṛṣyatē is dragged.

"This body which used to be decorated by me with auspicious items, with great respect is dragged by cruel animals."
agniṣṭōmādibhiryajñairiṣṭavānāptadakṣiṇaiḥ .

agnihōtrēṇasaṅskāraṅkēnatvaṅnatulapsyasē ।।6.32.24।।


āptadakṣiṇaiḥ all offerings into fire, agniṣṭōmādibhiḥ offerings in sacrificial fire, yajñaiḥ sacrifices, iṣṭavān which you deserve, tvam you, agniṅōtrēṇa by sacrificial performances of fire, saṅskāram sanctification, kēna why, natulapsyasē you are not getting.

"Why are you, who performed all kinds of sacrificial rituals of fire with all offerings deserve sanctification without doing fire sacrifice?"
pravrajyāmupapannānāṅtrayāṇāmēkamāgatam .

pariprakṣyatikausalyālakṣmaṇaṅśōkalālasā ।।6.32.25।।


śōkalālasā immersed in grief, kausalyā Kausalya, pravrajyām of the exiled ones, upapannānām attended by, trayāṇām of the three, āgatam returning, ēkam alone, lakṣmaṇam only Lakshmana, pariprēkṣyati will see returned.

"Seeing only Lakshmana returning, of the three exiled, Kausalya will be immersed in grief (will ask)."
satasyāḥparipṛcchantyāvadhaṅmitrabalasyatē .

tavacākhyāsyatēnūnaṅniśāyāṅrākṣasairvadham ।।6.32.26।।


saḥ she, paripṛcchantyāḥ when enquired by her, tasyāḥ you, niśāyam in the night, rākṣasaiḥ by Rakshasas, tēmitrabalasya by the friend's army, vadham slayed, tava your, badhaṅca and army, nūnam indeed surely.

"When she questions, he may tell that you and your army were killed by the army of friends at night."
sātvāṅsuptaṅhataṅśrutvāmāṅcarakṣōgṛhaṅgatām .

hṛdayēnavidīrṇēnanabhaviṣyatirāghava ।।6.32.27।।


rāghava Raghava, sā that, tvām your, suptam while asleep, hatam killed, mām me, rakṣōgṛham in the home of Rakshasas, gatām taken, śrutvā on hearing avidīrṇana broken, hṛdayēna heart, nabhaviṣyati will not survive.

"Raghava! Hearing that you were killed while asleep and I was taken to the home of Rakshasas, Kausalya will not be able to survive with a broken heart."
mamahētōranāryāyāhyanarhaḥpārthivātma: .

rāmassāgaramutatīryasattvavān gōṣpadēhataḥ ।।6.32.28।।


anarhaḥ undeserving, pārthivātmajaḥ son of emperor, sattvavān valiant, rāmaḥ Rama, anāryāyāḥ not noble, mama my, hētōḥ on account of, sāgaram ocean, utatīrya having crossed, gōṣpadē for a footprint of cow, hataḥ killed.

"On account of an undeserving one, Rama, the son of the emperor, a valiant one who does not deserve to be killed, after having crossed the ocean is killed by a footprint of a cow(easily)."
ahaṅdāśarathēnōḍhāmōhātsvakulapāṅsanī .

āryaputrasyarāmasyabhāryāmṛtyurajāyata ।।6.32.29।।


svakulapāṅsanī as an obloquy of his race, aham I am, dāśarathēna by the son of Dasaratha, mōhat in ignorance, ūḍhā married, āryaputrasya son of noble one, rāmasya with Rama, bhāryā wife, mṛtyuḥ death, ajāyata turned out to be.

"In ignorance as an obloquy of his race, the noble son of Dasaratha married me. For such Rama's wife turned out to be his death."
nūnamanyāṅmayājātiṅvāritaṅdānamuttamam .

yāhamadyēhaśōcāmibhāryāsarvatithērapi ।।6.32.30।।


sarvatitēḥ kind to all, bhāryāpi even though wife, yā also, aham I am, iha here, adhya now, śōcāmi pained, mayā by me, anyām other, jātim life, uttamam supreme, dānam charity, vāritam obstructed, nūnam surely.

"Undoubtedly I may have obstructed a supreme offering (such as offering a girl in marriage) in some other (previous) life. So now I am pained even though I am the wife of one who is kind to all."
sādhupātayamāṅkṣipraṅrāmasyōparirāvaṇa .

samānayapatiṅpantyākurukalyāṇamuttamam ।।6.32.31।।


rāvaṇa Ravana, kṣipram quickly, mām me, rāmasyaupari on Rama, sādhu do, pātaya husband, satim wife also, patnayā with husband, samānaya joined with, uttamam highly, kalyāṇam auspicious, karu you may do.

"O Ravana! You may quickly join me with my husband as it will be highly auspicious for the wife to join the husband."
śirasāmēśiraścāsyakāyaṅkāyēnayōjaya .

rāvaṇānugamiṣyāmigatiṅbharturmahātmanaḥ ।।6.32.32।।


rāvaṇa Ravana, mēśirasā my head, asya with his, śiraḥ head, kāyēna body, kāyam with his body, yējaya join, mahātmanaḥ great soul, bhartuḥ husband, gatim way, anugamiṣyāmi will follow.

"O Ravana! Join my head with his and my body with his body. I will follow him in the same way."
itisaduḥkhasantaptāvilalāpāyatēkṣaṇā .

bhartuśśirōdhanustatrasamīkṣyacapunaḥpunaḥ ।।6.32.33।।


ayatēkṣaṇā broad eyed one, bhartuḥ husband, śiraḥ head, dhanuścaina at the bow, punaḥpunaḥ again and again, samīkṣya gazing, duḥkhasantaptā burning in sorrow, saitisā she thus, vilālasa lamented.

Burning in sorrow, the broad eyed Sita gazing at the head of her husband and the bow again and again lamented.
ēvaṅlālapyamānāyāṅsītāyāṅtatrarākṣasaḥ .

abhicakrāmabhartāramanīkasthaḥkṛtāñjaliḥ ।।6.32.34।।


sītāyāṅ while Sita, ēvam in that way, lālapyamānāyām wailing as said before, tatra there, anīkasthaḥ guarding, rākṣasaḥ Rakshasa, kṛtāñjāliḥ offered salutation, bhartāram to the king, abhicakrāma approached.

While Sita was wailing in that manner, as said earlier, the Rakshasa guarding her approached the king and offered salutations with both hands.
vijayasvāryaputrētisō.bhivādyaprasādyaca .

nyavēdayadanuprāptaṅprahastaṅvāhinīpatim ।।6.32.35।।


saḥ that Rakshasa, āryaputra to the king, vijayasva let you be victorious, iti thus, abhivādya greeted, prasādyaca and reverentially, vāhinīpatim chief of the army, prahastam Prahastha, anuprāptam has arrived, nyavēday announced.

The Rakshasa (guard) greeted the king saying, "Let you be victorious!" and announced reverentially, "Prahastha, the army chief has arrived."
amātyaissahitassarvaiḥprahastassamupasthitaḥ .

tēnadarśanakāmēnavayaṅprasthāpitāḥprabhō ।।6.32.36।।


prabhō O Lord, sarvēḥ all, amātyaiḥ ministers, sahitaḥ accompanied by, prahastaḥ Prahastha, tvām to you, upasthitaḥ waiting, darśanakāmēna desiring to see you, tēna so, vayam me, prasthāsitaḥ sent.

"O Lord! Accompanied by all ministers Prahastha is waiting and sends me desiring to see you."
nūnamastimahārāja rājabhāvātkṣamānvitaṅ .

kiñcidātyayikaṅkāryaṅtēṣāṅtvaṅdarśanaṅkuru ।।6.32.37।।


mahārājā great king, kṣamānvita endowed with forgiveness, rājabhāvāt with royalty, kiñcit a little, atyayikam urgent, kāryam work, asti is, nūnam undoubtedly, tvam you, tēṣām them, darśanam see, kuru to.

"O great king, endowed with forgiveness and royalty! there is a little urgent work. Undoubtedly, they are waiting to see you please."
ētacchrutvādaśagrīvōrākṣasaprativēditam .

aśōkanvikāṅtyaktvāmantriṇāṅdarśanaṅyayau ।।6.32.38।।


daśagrīvaḥ ten-headed Ravana, ētat all that (was said), rākṣasaprativēditam submitted by Rakshasa, śrutvā hearing, aśōkananakām from the Asoka grove, tvaktvā left, mantriṇām to the ministers, darsanam to see, yayau went.

On hearing the submission of the rakshasa, the ten-headed king left the Asoka grove to see the ministers.
satusarvaṅsamarthyaivamantribhiḥkṛtyamātmanaḥ .

sabhāṅpraviśyavidadhēviditvārāmavikramam ।।6.32.39।।


saḥ that he, mantribhiḥ and ministers, ātmanaḥ himself, sarvam all about (Rama's prowess), kṛtyam the task to be carried out, samarthyaiva thinking carefully, sabhām to the assembly, praviśya entered, rāmavikramam Rama's prowess, viditvā having known, vidadhē to do so.

Having known all about Rama's prowess, Ravana and ministers entered the assembly to think carefully about the task to be carried out and how to do it.
antarthānaṅtutacchīrṣaṅtaccakārmukamuttamam .

jagāmarāvaṇasyaivaniryāṇasamanantaram ।।6.32.40।।


rāvaṇasya Ravana's, niryāṇasamanantaramēva as soon as he departed, tat śīrṣam that head, uttamam excellent, tat that, kārmukaṅca and the bow, antarthānam vanished, jāgāma went.

As soon as Ravana departed, that head and the excellent bow vanished from there.
rākṣasēndrastutaissārdhaṅmantribhirbhīmavikramaiḥ .

samarthayāmāsatadārāmakāryaviniścayam ।।6.32.41।।


rākṣasēndrastu even king of Rakshasas, bhīmavikramaiḥ of terrific valour, mantribhiḥ and ministers, tadā then, rāmakāryaviniścayam to decide on the course of action to be taken against Rama, samarthayāmāsa thought over and decided.

avidūrasthitānsarvānbalādhyakṣāhanitaiṣiṇaḥ .

abravītkālasadṛśōrāvaṇōrākṣasādhipaḥ ।।6.32.42।।


kālasadṛśaḥ resembling god of death, rākṣasādipaḥ Rakshasa king, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, avidūrasthitān stood not far from him, hitaiṣiṇaḥ well-wishers, sarvān all, balādhyakṣān heads of army force abravīt spoke.

The Rakshasa king who resembled the god of death spoke to the heads of army force and well-wishers who stood close by.
śīghraṅbhērīninādēnasphuṭaṅkōṇāhatēnamē .

samānayadhvaṅsainyānivaktavyaṅcanakāraṇam ।।6.32.43।।


sphuṭam break forth, kōṇāhatēna with powerful drumsticks, bhērininādēnamē by beating the drums, sainyāni the army, samānayadhvam let them be called to assemble, kāraṇam reason, nacavaktavyam without telling.

"Break forth by beating the drums with powerful drumsticks calling the army to assemble without telling the reason."
tatastathētipratigṛhyatadvacōbalādhipāstēmahadātmanōbalam .

samānayaṅścaivasamāgamaṅcatēnyavēdayanbhartariyuddhakāṅkṣiṇi ।।6.32.44।।


tataḥ then, tē those, dūtāḥ attendants, tadvacaḥ those words, tathāiti so be it, pratigṛhya taking hold, balādhipātē the powerful army, mahatā great, ātmanō to him, balaṅca and the army, samānayān collected, samāgatam arrived, yuddhakāṅkṣiṇi one who was desirous of war.

Then the attendants collected the great powerful army saying, 'so be it', to Ravana who was desirous of war.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddakāṇḍēdvātriṅśassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the thirty second sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
