[Saarana tells Sita that the evidence shown by Ravana is false and that Rama has crossed the ocean and reached Lanka.]

सीतांतुमोहितांदृष्टवासरमानामराक्षसी ।

आससादाथवैदेहींप्रियांप्रणयिनींसखी ।।6.33.1।।


अथ then, प्रणयिनीम् dear, सखी friend, सरमानाम Saarana, राक्षसी rakshasa मोहिताम् distraught, सीताम् Sita, दृष्टवा seeing, प्रियाम् friend, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, आससाद approached

Then seeing Sita in distraught, a Rakshasi by name Saarana who was very dear and friendly with Vaidehi approached her.
मोहितांराक्षसेन्द्रेणसीतांपरमदुःखिताम् ।

आश्वासयामासतदासरमामृदुभाषिणी ।।6.33.2।।


तदा then, मृदुभाषिणी of sweet expression, सरमा Saarana, राक्षसेन्द्रेण because of the king of Rakshasa, मोहिताम् put off, परमदुःखिताम् extremely sorrowful, सीताम् Sita, आश्वासयामास comforted.

Then Saarana of sweet expression, comforted Sita who was put off and was extremely sorrowful because of the Rakshasa king.
साहितत्रकृतामित्रंसीतयारक्ष्यमाणया ।

रक्षन्तीरावणादिष्टासानुक्रोशादृढव्रता ।।6.33.3।।


रावणादिष्टा by Ravana's order, रक्षन्ती protected, सानुक्रोशा most compassionate, दृढव्रता determined, सा that, तत्र there, रक्ष्यमाणया protecting, सीतया Sita, मित्रम् friendship, कृताहि was doing (protecting).

Most compassionate Saarana, determined to protect was friendly with Sita while she was ordered for protecting her by Ravana.
साददर्शसखीसीतांसरमानष्टचेतनाम् ।

उपावृत्त्योत्थितांध्वस्तांबडबामिवपांसुलाम् ।।6.33.4।।


सखी friend, सा that, सरमा Saarana, नष्टचेतनाम् lost consciousness, पांसुलाम् dirty ground, उपावृत्त्य enveloped, उत्थिताम् female horse, ध्वस्ताम् covered with, बडबामिव like a female horse, सीताम् Sita, ददर्श saw.

Saarana saw her friend Sita, who had lost consciousness, fully covered by dust by rolling on the dirty ground like a female horse.
तांसमाश्वासयामाससखीस्नेहेनसुव्रता ।

समाश्वसिहिवैदेही माभूत्तेमवसोव्यथा ।।6.33.5।।


सखी friend, वैदेही Vaidehi, सुव्रता noble vows, ताम् her, स्नेहेन in friendly way, समाश्वासयामास consoled, समाश्वसिहि encouraging to recover, ते your, मनसः heart, व्यधा pain, माभूत् not be.

Saarana consoled Vaidehi of noble vows in a friendly way and encouraged her to recover saying, "Let there be no pain at heart."
उक्तायद्रावणेनत्वंप्रत्युक्तश्चस्वयंत्वया ।

सखीस्नेहेनतभदीरुमयासर्वंप्रतिश्रुतम् ।।6.33.6।।

लीनयागहनेशून्येभयमुत्सृज्यरावणात् ।

तवहेतोर्विशालाक्षी नहिमेजीवितंप्रियम् ।।6.33.7।।


भीरु one under constant fear (timid), त्वम् you are, रावणेन by Ravana, यत् thus, उक्ता spoken, त्वया to you, स्वयम् yourself, प्रत्युक्तश्च your reply, तत् सर्वम् all that, शून्ये secret, गहने location, लीनया hiding, मया by me, सखीस्नेहेन out of friendship, रावणात् of Ravana, भयम् fear, उत्सृज्य giving up, प्रतिश्रुतम् heard the reply, विशालाक्षि broadeyed, तवहेतोः for your sake, मे me, जीवितम् life, भयम् fear, नहि not being.

"O Broadeyed friend! You are constantly under fear (timid). Give up fear of Ravana, I have overheard all that you have spoken to Ravana and his reply by hiding in a secret place out of my affection, without caring for my life."
ससम्भ्रान्तश्चनिष्क्रान्तोयत्कृतेराक्षसाधिपः ।

तच्चमेविदितंसर्वमभिनिष्क्रम्यमैथिलि:।। 6.33.8।।


मैथिलि Mythili, सःराक्षसाधिपः the king of Rakshasas, यत्कृते for what reason, सम्भ्रान्तः agitated, निष्क्रान्तः left, तत्र that, सर्वम् everything, अभिनिष्क्रम्य returned back, मे I, विदितम् know.

"O Mythili! I know all about why the king of Rakshasas returned back agitated."
नशक्यंसौप्तिकंकर्तुंरामस्यविदितात्मनः ।

वधश्चपुरुषव्याघ्रेतस्मिन्नैवोपपद्यते ।।6.33.9।।


विदितात्मनः knower of himself, रामस्य Rama's, सौप्तिकम् sleeping, कर्तुम् to do, नशक्यम् not possible, पुरुषव्याघ्रे tiger among men, तस्मिन् his, वधश्च death, नैवउपपद्यते not possible.

"Rama is a knower of his Self. It is not possible to kill him while he is asleep. Nay death is not possible for he is a tiger among men."
नत्वेववानराहन्तुंशक्याःपादपयोधिपः ।

सुरादेवर्षभेणेवरामेणहिसुरक्षिताः ।।6.33.10।।


सुरर्षभेण Lord of Devas, सुराःइव like Devas, रामेण by Rama, सुरक्षिताः protected, पादपयोधिपः warriors who fight wielding trees, वानराः Vanaras, एवम् like that, हन्तुम् to kill, नशक्याः not feasible.

"Vanaras are fighting with trees and are not capable of being killed. Just as the gods are protected by their Lord Indra, Vanaras are protected by Rama. It is not feasible to kill them."
दीर्घवृत्तभुज्शीमान्महोरस्कःप्रतापवान् ।

धन्वीसंहननोपेतोधर्मात्माभुविविश्रुतः ।।6.33.11।।

विक्रान्तोरक्षितानित्यमात्मनश्चपरस्यच ।

लक्ष्मणेनसहभ्रात्राकुशलीनयशास्त्रवित् ।।6.33.12।।

हन्तापरबलौघनामचिन्त्यबलपौरुषः ।

नहतोराघवश्रशीमान्सीते: शत्रुनिबर्हणः ।।6.33.13।।


सीते O Sita!, दीर्घवृत्तभुजः who has long rounded shoulders, श्रीमान् majestic, महोरस्कः broad chest, प्रतापवान् endowed with valour, धन्वी wielder of bow, संहननोपेतः surrounded by many, धर्मात्मा righteous, भुवि world, विश्रुतः famous, विक्रान्तः powerful, नित्यम् at all times, आत्मनश्च his own, परस्यच and others, रक्षिता protector, भ्रात्रा brother, लक्ष्मणेन Lakshmana also, कुशल: happy, नयशास्त्रवित् knower of sastras of propriety, परबलौघानाम् strength of enemy, हन्ता kill, अचिन्त्यबलपौरुषः of inconceivable courage, श्रीमान् royal, शत्रुनिबर्हणः destroyer of foes, राघवः Raghava, नहतः not killed.

"O Sita! One who is endowed with long rounded arms and broad chest, a valorous one, a glorious wielder of bow and powerful Rama along with his brother Lakshmana, is always a protector of himself and all surrounding him. He is a knower of sastras of propriety. Raghava is majestic with inconceivable courage and a destroyer of foes. He will not be killed."
अयुक्तबुद्धिकृत्येनसर्वभूतविरोधिना ।

इहप्रमुक्तारौद्रेणमायामायाविदात्वयि ।।6.33.14।।


अयुक्तबुद्धिकृत्येन by perverse thought, सर्वभूतविरोधिना inimical to all beings, रौद्रेण in anger, मायाविदा a tricker, इह here, त्वयि at you, माया trickcheating, प्रयुक्ता attempted.

"On account of his perverse thought and being inimical to all beings Ravana a tricker has attempted a trick at you in anger."
शोकस्तेविगतस्सर्वःकल्याणंत्वामुपस्थितम् ।

ध्रुवंत्वांभजतेलक्ष्मीःप्रियंतेप्रीतिकरंशृणुः ।।6.33.15।।


ते your, शोकः grief, विगतः gone, सर्वकल्याणम् all auspicious, त्वाम् to you, उपस्थितम् awaits, लक्ष्मीः Lakshmi, ध्रुवम् surely, त्वाम् you, भजते attain, ते to you, प्रियम् pleasant, प्रीतिकरं happy, शृणु hear.

"Your sorrow has gone. All auspiciousness awaits you. Surely you will attain good fortune (Lakshmi). You listen to my happy and pleasant news."
उत्तीर्यसागरंरामस्सहवानरसेनया ।

सन्निविष्टःसमुद्रस्यतीरमासाद्यदक्षिणम् ।।6.33.16।।


रामः Rama, वानरसेनयासह accompanied by Vanara army, सागरम् ocean, उत्तीर्य cross, समुद्रस्य of the ocean, दक्षिणंतीरम् southern shore, आसाद्य reached, सन्निविष्टः staying.

"Rama accompanied by Vanara army has crossed the ocean and reached the southern shore of the ocean."
दृष्टोमेपरिपूर्णार्थःकाकुत्स्थस्सहलक्ष्मणः ।

सहितैस्सागरान्तस्थैर्बलैस्तिष्ठतिरक्षितः ।।6.33.17।।


परिपूर्णार्थः fully accomplished soul, सहलक्ष्मणः accompanied by Lakshmana, काकुत्स्थ Kakuthsa, मे myself, दृष्टः seen, सागरान्तस्थैः sea shore, सहितैः together with, बलैः army, रक्षितः protected, तिष्ठति stationed.

"Rama, a fully accomplished soul accompanied by Lakshmana together with army stands protected by the army and is stationed on the seashore."
अनेनप्रेषितायेचराक्षसालघुविक्रमाः ।

राघवस्तीर्णइत्येवप्रवृत्तिस्तैरिहाहृता ।।6.33.18।।


अनेन by the king, ये they, लघुविक्रमाः swiftfooted, राक्षसाः Rakshasa, प्रेषिताः sent by, तैः they, राघवः Raghava, इत्येव this news, प्रवृत्तिः of crossing, इह here, आहृता brought.

"These swift footed Rakshasas sent by the king brought the news of Rama crossing the sea."
सतांश्रुत्वाविशालाक्षी: प्रवृत्तिंराक्षसाधिपः ।

एषमन्त्रयतेसर्वैस्सचिवैस्सहरावणः ।।6.33.19।।


विशालाक्षी broad eyed, राक्षसाधिपः Rakshasa king, सःएषः all the news, रावणः Ravana, ताम् those, प्रवृत्तिम् What to do, श्रुत्वा hearing, सचिवैःसह with friends, मन्त्रयते with ministers.

"O Broadeyed Sita! On hearing the news (of Rama crossing) Rakshasa king is holding consultation with ministers about what to do."
इतिब्रुवाणासरमाराक्षसीसीतयासह ।

सर्वोद्योगेनसैन्यानांशब्दंशुश्रावभैरवम् ।।6.33.20।।


इति thus, सीतयासह with Sita, ब्रुवाणा while speaking, राक्षसी rakshasi, सरमा Saarana, सैन्यानाम् by the army, सर्वोद्योगेन all kinds of attempts, भैरवम् frightening, शब्दम् sound, शुश्राव heard.

While Saarana was speaking to Sita, frightening sounds of the army making all kinds of attempts were heard.
दण्डनिर्घातवादिन्याश्रुत्वाभेर्यामहास्वनम् ।

उवाचसरमासीतामिदंमधुरभाषिणी ।।6.33.21।।


मधुरभाषिणी of sweet talk, सरमा Saarana, दण्डनिर्घातवादिन्याः sounds of army maces and rods, भेर्याः drums, महास्वनम् loud sounds, श्रुत्वा hearing, सीताम् to Sita, इदम् thus, उवाच spoke.

On hearing the loud sounds of army maces, rods, and drums, Saarana looked at Sita and spoke these sweet words.
सन्नाहजननीह्येषाभैरवाभीरु: भेरिका ।

भेरीनादंचगम्भीरंशृणुतोयदनिःस्वनम् ।।6.33.22।।


भीरु timid, भैरवा fear, एषा these, भेरिका of drums, सन्नाहजननीहि to let the army start, तोयदनिःस्वनम् sound of rain clouds, गम्भीरम् very penetrating, भेरीनादंच sound of drums, शृणु listen.

"O Timid Sita! Listen to the deep penetrating sounds of drums like the rumbling of rain clouds signifying the preparations of the army."
कल्प्यन्तेमत्तमातङ्गायुज्यन्तेरथवाजिन ।

हृष्यन्तेतुरगारूढाःप्रासहस्तस्सहस्रशः ।।6.33.23।।


मत्तमातङ्गाः elephants in rut, कल्प्यन्ते decorating, रथवाजिनः charioteers, युज्यन्ते getting ready for war, सहस्रशः in thousands, प्रासहस्ताः discharging darts from hand s, तुरगारूढाः getting on the horses, हृष्यन्ते happilylaughing loudly.

"Elephants in rut are being decorated, charioteers are getting ready for war in thousands and discharging darts from hands and laughing loudly."
तत्रतत्रचसन्नद्धास्सपततनिपदातयः ।

अपूर्यन्तेराजमार्गास्सैन्यैरद्भुतदर्शनैः ।।6.33.24।।

वेगवभदिन्नदभदिश्चतोयौघैरिवसागरः ।


पदातयः foot soldiers, सन्नद्धाः prepared, तत्रतत्रच here and there, संपततनि collected in groups, अद्भुतदर्शनैः weird appearance, सैन्यैः troops, वेगवभदिः swiftly, नदभदिःच making sounds, तोयौघैः streams of water, सागरःइव like the ocean, राजमार्गाः royal path, अपूर्यन्ते strange.

"See the weird appearance of footsoldiers collected here and therein groups prepared to go. The royal path is filled with choking sounds of the troops moving fast, like an ocean filled with streams of water. It is strange."
शस्त्राणांचप्रसन्नानांचर्मणांवर्मणांतथा ।।6.33.25।।

रथवाजिगजानांचभूषितानांचराक्षसाम् ।

संभ्रमोराक्षसामेषहृषितानांतरस्विनाम् ।।6.33.26।।

प्रभांविसृजतांपश्यनानावर्णांसमुत्थिताम् ।

वनंनिर्धहतोघर्मेयथारूपंविभावसोः ।।6.33.27।।


घर्मे in summer, वनम् forest, निर्दहतः burning, विभावसोः the glow, रूपंयथा like that, नानावर्णाम् in different colours, समुत्थिताम् , प्रभाम् brightness, विसृजताम् arisen and spread, प्रसन्नानाम् pleasing, शस्त्राणाम् weapons, चर्मणाम् leather shields, तथा like that, वर्मणाम् colourful, राक्षसामेष Rakshasa demons राक्षसेन्रर्दामयायिनाम् Rakshasa king's heroic army, रथवाजिगजानां chariots and elephants horses, भूषितानां ornaments, तरस्विनाम् powerful, रक्षसाम् demons, एषः that manner, सःभ्रमः joyful, पश्य see.

"Look at the sheen of weapons, the leather shields, spreading forth different pleasing colours, the brightness of which resembles the burning of forest fire arisen and spread in summer. And here are chariots, horses and elephants decked with ornaments following Ravana, as well as the powerful Rakshasa army full of joy."
घण्टानांशृणुनिर्घोषंरथानांशृणुनिःस्वनम् ।

हयानांहेषमाणानांशृणुतूर्यध्वनिंयथा ।।6.33.28।।

उद्यतायुधहस्तानांराक्षसेन्द्रानुयायिनाम् ।

सम्भ्रमोरक्षसामेषतुमुलोरोमहर्षणः ।।6.33.29।।


घण्टानाम् of bells, निर्घोषम् ringing, शृणु listen, रथानाम् of chariots, निःस्वनम् rattling, शृणु listen, ह्रेषमाणानाम् neighing, हयानाम् of horses, तूर्यध्वनिंयथा like the flourish of the trumpets, शृणु listen, एषः in that manner, उद्यतायुधहस्तानाम् uplifted weapons, राक्षसेन्द्रानुयायिनाम् following the lead off the king, रक्षसाम् of Rakshasas, तुमुलः tumultuous, रोमहर्षणः horripilation, सम्भ्रमः happy.

"Listen to the bustle of noise of the Rakshasas lifting the weapons, ringing of the bells (of elephants), and rattling of chariots, and neighing of horses. Listen to the flourish of the trumpets. The happy Rakshasas are making tumultuous noise causing horripilation."
श्रीस्त्वांभजतिशोकघ्नीरक्षसांभयमागतम् ।

रामःकमलपत्राक्षोदैत्यानामिववासवः ।।6.33.30।।

निर्जित्यजितक्रोधस्त्वामचिन्तपराक्रमः ।

रावणंसमरेहत्वाभर्तात्वाऽधिगमिष्यति ।।6.33.31।।


शोकघ्नी fire of anger, श्रीः victory, त्वाम् you, भजति will get you, रक्षसाम् Rakshasas, भयम् fear, आगतम् will come, अदैत्यानाम् Daityas, वासवःइव like the Lord of Devatas who vanquished Daityas, कमलपत्राक्षः lotus petaleyed, भर्ता husband, जितक्रोधः who has conquered anger, अच्नित्यपराक्रमः whose process is inconceivable, रामः Rama, तंरावणम् that Ravana, समरे in war, हत्वा killing, त्वा you, अधिगमिष्यति will win you back.

"Your fire of anger will be gone. Your husband, the lotuspetal eyed Rama whose prowess is inconceivable like that of Indra who vanquished Daityas will come and kill Ravana and win you back."
विक्रमिष्यतिरक्षस्सुभर्तातेसहलक्ष्मणः ।

यथाशत्रुषुशत्रुघ्नोविष्णुनासहवासवः ।।6.33.32।।


सहलक्ष्मणः accompanied by Lakshmana, तेभर्ता your husband, शत्रुघ्नः destroy, विष्णुनासह along with Vishnu, वासवः Indra, शत्रुषु against enemy, यथा just as, रक्षस्सु Rakshasas, विक्रमिष्यति will exhibit his valour.

"Your husband accompanied by Lakshmana will exhibit his valour against Rakshasas just as Indra did against enemies accompanied by Vishnu (descended as his younger brother)."
हिरामस्यक्षिप्रमङ्कागतांसतीम् ।

अहंद्रक्ष्यामिसिद्धार्धांत्वांशत्रौविनिपातिते ।।6.33.33।।


शत्रौ enemy, विनिपातिते after killing, सिद्धार्धाम् having accomplished, त्वाम् you, आगतव्य mounted on, रामस्य Rama's, अङ्कागतांसतीम् on the lap Rama, क्षिप्रम् soon, अहम् I, द्रक्ष्यामि will behold you.

"When the enemy is killed, and your objective is accomplished, I shall behold you mounted on the lap of Rama."
अश्रूण्यानन्दजानित्वंवर्तयिष्यसिशोभने ।

समागम्यपरिष्वज्यतस्योरसिमहोरसः ।।6.33.34।।


शोभने virtuous woman, समागम्य arrived, परिष्वज्य hugged, महोरसः broadchested, तस्य his, उरसि bosom, आनन्दजानि tears of joy, अश्रूण्याणि tears, वर्तयिष्यसि will shed.

"Virtuous Sita! Hugged by your broad chested Rama, you will shed tears of joy on his bosom."
अचिरान्मोक्ष्यतेसीते देवितेजघनंगताम् ।

धृतामेताम्बहून्मासान्वेणींरामोमहाबलः ।।6.33.35।।


सीते O Sita, देवि God like, महाबलः mighty, रामः Rama, बहून् many, मासान् months, धृताम् , ते your, एताम् , जघनम् your hind part, गताम् before, एकांवेणीम् single plait, अचिरात् very soon, मोक्ष्यते will release.

"O Sita! God like lady! Mighty Rama will soon release your single plait hanging up to hind part for many months before."
तस्यदृष्टवामुखंदेवी पूर्णचन्द्रमिवोदितम् ।

मोक्ष्यसेशोकजंवारिनिर्मोकमिवपन्नगी ।।6.33.36।।


देवी God like lady, तस्य your, उदितम् countenance, पूर्णचन्द्रम् इव like full moon, मुखम् face, दृष्टवा seen, पन्नगी female snake, निर्मोकमिव like setting free the slough, शोकजम् born of grief, वारि water, मोक्ष्यसे casts off.

"God like Lady! Beholding the face of Sri Rama whose face is like a just risen full moon, you will cast off tears of sorrow just as a female snake sets its slough free."
रावणंसमरेहत्वानचिराद्धेवी: मैथिली: ।

त्वयासमग्रःप्रिययासुखार्होलप्स्यतेसुखम् ।।6.33.37।।


देवी God like lady, मैथिली Mythili, सुखार्हः who deserves to be happy, नचिरात् before long, समरे in war, रावणम् Ravana, हत्वा killing, प्रियया beloved, त्वया you, समग्रः companion, सुखम् happiness, लप्स्यते will enjoy.

"O divine Mythili! Killing Ravana in war before long, your beloved who deserves to be happy will be happy in the company of his beloved."
समागतात्वंवीर्येणमोदिष्यसिमहात्मना ।

सुवर्षेणसमायुक्तायथासस्येनमेदिनी ।।6.33.38।।


त्वम् you, सुवर्षेण with good monsoon, समायुक्ता filled with, मेदिनी earth, सस्येनयथा just as the crops, महात्मना great soul, वीर्येण heroism, समागता will become, मोदिष्यति joyful.

"Just as the earth becomes green with crops blessed with good monsoon, so also you will become joyful by seeing the great soul Rama's heroism."
गिरिवरमभितोऽनुवर्तमानोहयइवमण्डलमाशुयःकरोति ।

तमिहशरणमभ्युपैहिदेवंदिवसकरंप्रभवोह्ययंप्रजानाम् ।।6.33.39।।


देवं God, यः he who, गिरिवरम् अभितः coursing round the great mountain, अनुवर्तमानः goes round in circle, हयःइव just as the horse, आशु quickly, मण्डलम् circular orb around the sun, करोति does, तम् him, दिवसकरम् sun God, इह here, शरणम् seek refuge, अभ्युपैहि the nourisher, अणम् cause, प्रजानाम् for all beings, प्रभवःहि provider of splendour.

"Seek refuge of the Sun God who while coursing round the great mountain goes round in circles around the orb swiftly like a horse. He is the source of joy and sorrow for all beings."
।। इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेत्रयस्त्रिंशस्सर्गः ।।
This is the end of the thirty third sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
