[On Sita's request Saarana finds out Ravana's plans and reveals to her.]

अथतांजातन्तापांतेनवाक्येनमोहिताम् ।

सरमाह्लादयामासमहींघौरीमिवाम्भसा ।।6.34.1।।


अथ and thus, जातसन्तापाम् put off the agony, तेनवाक्येन by her words, मोदिताम् gladdened, ताम् that, सरमा Saarana, घौरीम् parched, महीम् earth, अम्भसाइव like rainwater, समाह्लादयामास consoled and delighted.

Thus, Sita's agony was put off by Saarana's consoling words and Sita was glad just as the parched earth was delighted with shower of rain.
ततस्तस्याहितंसख्याश्चिकीर्षन्तीसखीवचः ।

उवाचकालेकालज्ञास्मितपूर्वाभिभाषिणी ।।6.34.2।।


ततः then, कालज्ञा who knows the time to do, स्मितपूर्वाभिभाषिणी who smiles before talking, सखी friend, सख्याः beloved, तस्याः her, हितम् welfare, चिकीर्षन्ती desirous of doing anything, काले in time, वचः these words, उवाच spoke.

Then Saarana who knew the right time to do so, wishing the welfare of her dear friend Sita and desirous of doing anything for her smiled before she started speaking.
उत्सहेयमहंगत्वात्वद्वाक्यमसितेक्षणे: ।

निवेद्यकुशलंरामेप्रतिच्छन्नानिवर्तितुम् ।।6.34.3।।


असितेक्षणे dark eyed lady, अहम् I, प्रतिच्छन्ना hidden, गत्वा going, त्वद्वाक्यम् your message, कुशलम् welfare, रामे to Rama, निवेद्य communicate, निवर्तितुम् return back, उत्सहेयम् eager.

"Darkeyed Sita! I am eager to go (to Rama's presence) and communicate your welfare and message. I can return back hidden (from Ravana's view)."
नहिमेक्रममाणायानिरालम्बेविहायसि ।

समर्थोगतिमन्वेतुंपवनोगरुडोऽपिवा ।।6.34.4।।


निरालम्बे without any support, विहायसि going through the sky, क्रममाणायाः proceeding, मे me, गतिम् movement, अन्वेतुम् to follow, पवनः wind god, गरुडोऽपिवा or even Garuda, नसमर्थः not capable.

"While I fly through the sky without any support, either the wind god or even Garuda will not be capable of following my movement."
एवंब्रुवाणांतांसीतासरमांपुनरब्रवीत् ।

मधुरंश्लक्क्षणयावाचापूर्वशोकाभिपन्नया ।।6.34.5।।


सीता Sita, एवम् in that manner, ब्रुवाणाम् telling, तांसरमाम् that Saarana, पूर्वशोकाभिपन्नया earlier filled with tears, श्लक्क्षणया gentle countenance, वाचा spoke, मधुरम् sweet, पुनः again, अब्रवीत् said.

When Saarana was telling Sita in that way, Sita's face which was earlier filled with tears became pleasant and she spoke again.
समर्थागगनंगन्तुमपिवात्वंरसातलम् ।

अवगच्छाम्यकर्तव्यंकर्तव्यंतेमदन्तरे ।।6.34.6।।


त्वम् you, गगनम् in the sky, अपिच even, रसातलम् underworld, गन्तुम् , समर्था capable, अकर्तव्यम् that which can't be done, मदन्तरे for my sake, ते you, कर्तव्यम् duty, एवगच्छामि also known to me.

"You are capable of flying through the sky or even going to the underworld. For my sake you will do what cannot be done also and that it is your bounden duty, is also known to me."
मत्प्रियंयदिकर्तव्यंयदिबुद्धि: स्थिरातव ।

ज्ञातुमिच्छामितंगत्वाकिंकरोतीतिरावणः ।।6.34.7।।


मप्रतियम् in my opinion, कर्तव्यंयदि What you should do, तव your, बुद्धिः understood, स्थिरायदि resolved firmly, रावणः Ravana, किंकरोतीति What is he doing, तम् to him, गत्वा you go, ज्ञातुम् find out, इच्छामि I wish.

"In my opinion, your duty for me is to go and find out what Ravana is doing now, if you are firmly resolved."
सहिमायाबलःक्रूरोरावणश्शत्रुरावणः ।

मांमोहयतिदुष्टात्मापीतामात्रेववारुणी ।।6.34.8।।


मायाबलः power to conjure, शत्रुरावणः who makes enemies cry, क्रूरः cruel, दुष्टात्मा evil minded, सःरावणः that Ravana, पीतमात्रा drunk, वारुणीव liquor, माम् to me, मोहयति deluded.

"Ravana has the power of conjuring tricks, makes enemies cry. He is cruel, evil minded and deluding me as though he has drunk liquor."
तर्जापयतिमांनित्यंभर्त्सापयतिचासकृत् ।

राक्षसीभिस्सुघूराभिर्यामांरक्षन्तिनित्यशः ।।6.34.9।।


याः he, माम् to me, नित्यशः all the time, रक्षन्ति takes care, सुघोराभिः most frightful, राक्षसीभिः even Rakshasa women, माम् to me, असकृत् repeatedly, नित्यम् every day, तर्जापयति threatening, भर्त्सापयति reproaching

"He, that Ravana makes even the frightful Rakshasa care takers threaten me and reproach me repeatedly every day."
उद्विग्नाशङ्किताचास्मिनस्वस्थंचमनोमम ।

तद्भयाच्चाहमुद्विग्नाअशोकवनिकांगता ।।6.34.10।।


अहम् I am, उद्विग्ना perturbed, शङ्किताच and doubting, अस्मि, मम to me, मनः mind, सस्वस्थम् not at ease, अहम् I am, अशोकवनिकाम् in the Asoka grove, गता remaining, तद्भयात् fear of him, उद्विग्ना perturbed.

"I am perturbed and doubtful (of my life). My mind is not at ease. Even though I am in Ashoka Grove I am disturbed."
यदिनामकथातस्यनिश्चितंवापियद्भवेत् ।

निवेदयेथास्सर्वंतत्परोमेस्यादमनुग्रहः ।।6.34.11।।


तस्य his, कथा everything, यदिनाम whatever decision, यत् that, निश्चितंवापि indeed certainly, भवेत् tell me, तत् सर्वम् fully, निवेदयेथाः please tell, तत् that, मे to me, परः enemy, अनुग्रहः kindly, स्यात् being.

"Indeed, please tell me certainly in toot, whatever decision that enemy takes and everything. Be kind to me and tell."
सात्वेवंब्रुवतींसीतांसरमावल्गुभाषिणी ।

उवाचवदनंतस्यास्स्पृशन्तीबाष्पविक्लबम् ।।6.34.12।।


वल्गुभाषिणी of gentle expression, सा she, सरमापि Saarana also, एवम् in that manner, ब्रुवतीम् replied, सीताम् to Sita, तस्याः her, बाष्पविक्लबम् covered with tears, वदनम् face, स्पृशन्ती gently wiping, उवाच replied.

Saarana who speaks sweetly, kept wiping Sita's face covered with tears gently and replied in this manner.
एषतेयद्यभिप्रायस्तदागच्छामिजानकी: ।

गृह्यशत्रोरभिप्रायमुपावृत्तांचपश्यमाम् ।।6.34.13।।


जानकी Janaki, एषः if it is so, ते to you, अभिप्रायःयदि if it is your opinion, तस्मात् to him, गच्छामि shall go, शत्रोः enemy, अभिप्रायम् intention, गृह्य find out secretly, उपावृत्ताम् shall return back.

"Janaki! If you think so, I shall go to Ravana secretly and find out his intention and return back."
एवमुक्त्वाततोगत्वासमीपंतस्यरक्षसः ।

शुश्रावकथितंतस्यरावणस्यसमन्त्रिणः ।।6.34.14।।


एवम् in that way, उक्त्वा having said, ततः she, तस्यरक्षसः her attendant, समीपम् near, गत्वा went, समन्त्रिणः with ministers, तस्य their, रावणस्य Ravana's, कथितम् talk, शुश्राव heard.

Having said so to Sita, she (Saarana) moved closer (to Ravana) and heard Ravana's conversation with his ministers.
साश्रुत्वानिश्चयंतस्यनिश्चयज्ञादुरात्मनः ।

पुनरेवागमत्क्षिप्रमशोकवनिकांशुभाम् ।।6.34.15।।


निश्चयज्ञा known the intention, सा of him, Ravana, दुरात्मनः evil minded, तस्य his, निश्चयम् decision, श्रुत्वा heard, क्षिप्रम् quickly, पुनरेव once again, शुभाम् beautiful, अशोकवनिकाम् Ashoka grove, आगमत् reached.

Having heard and known the intention of evilminded Ravana, she (Saarana) quickly reached the beautiful Ashoka grove.
साप्रविष्टाततस्तत्रददर्शजनकात्मजाम् ।

प्रतीक्षमाणांस्वामेवभ्रष्टपद्मामिवश्रियम् ।।6.34.16।।


प्रविष्टा having entered, सा she, तत्र then, स्वामेव for her, प्रतीक्षमाणाम् waiting eagerly every moment, भ्रष्टपद्माम् one who lost the lotus seat, श्रियम् इव, जनकात्मजाम् daughter of Janaka, ददर्श saw.

On entering the Ashoka grove, she saw the daughter of Janaka eagerly waiting for her every moment, looking like Lord Vishnu's wife Lakshmi, who lost her lotus seat.
तांतुसीतापुनःप्राप्तांसरमांवल्गुभाषिणीम् ।

परिष्वज्यचसुस्निग्धंददौचस्वयमासनम् ।।6.34.17।।


सीता Sita, पुनः again, प्राप्ताम् returning, वल्गुभाषिणीम् who spoke kindly, सरमाम् Saarana, सुस्निग्धम् very glad, परिष्वज्य embraced, स्वयम् herself, आसनम् seat, ददौ offered.

On seeing the kind Saarana returning, Sita was very glad. She embraced her and offered a seat herself.
इहासीनासुखंसर्वमाख्याहिममतत्त्वतः ।

क्रूरस्यनिश्चयंतस्यरावणस्यदुरात्मनः ।।6.34.18।।


इह here, सुखम् happily, आसीना seated, क्रूरस्य cruel one, दुरात्मनः evil minded one, तस्यरावणस्य that Ravana's, निश्चयम् intention, सर्वम् in toot, मम to me, तत्त्वतः truly, आख्याहि reveal to me.

"Seated here happily reveals to me truly that cruel and evil minded Ravana's intention."
एवमुक्तातुसरमासीतयावेपमानया ।

कथितंसर्वमाचष्टेरावणस्यसमन्त्रिणः ।।6.33.19।।


वेपमानया trembling, सीतया to Sita, एवम् like that, उक्ता said, सरमा Saarana, समन्त्रिणः with the ministers, रावणस्य Ravana's, सर्वम् totally, कथितम् all the discussion, आचष्टे narrated.

To the trembling Sita, Saarana narrated totally all the discussion Ravana had with the ministers.
जनन्याराक्षसेन्द्रोवैत्वन्मोक्षार्थंबृहद्वचः ।

अविद्धेनचवैदेहिमन्त्रिवृद्धेनबोधितः ।।6.33.20।।


वैदेहि Vaidehi, त्वन्मोक्षार्थम् to release you, राक्षसेन्द्रः Lord of Rakshasa's, जनन्या mother, मन्त्रिवृद्धेव aged minister, अविद्धेन Aviddha, बृहत् long, वचः words, बोधितः advised.

"O Vaidehi! Ravana's mother Kaikasi and the aged minister Aviddha advised the Lord of Rakshasas to release you."
दीयतामभिसत्कृत्यमनुजेन्द्रायमैथिली ।

निदर्शनंतेपर्याप्तंजनस्थानेयदद्भुतम् ।।6.34.21।।


मनुजेन्द्राय ruler of people, अभिसत्कृत्य extending good hospitality, मैधिली Mythili, दीयताम् given back, जनस्थाने at Janasthana, यत् that, अद्भुतम् amazing, ते to you, पर्याप्तम् sufficient, निदर्शनम् proof.

"Let Mythili be given back to the ruler of the people (Rama) offering good hospitality. The (killing of fourteen thousand Rakshasas) amazing performance at Janasthana by Rama should serve as sufficient proof to you (of the consequences)."
लङ्घनंचसमुद्रस्यदर्शनंचहनूमतः ।

वधंचरक्षसांयुद्धेकःकुर्यान्मानुषोभुवि ।।6.34.22।।


हनूमतः Hanuman, समुद्रस्य even ocean, लङ्घनम् Lanka, दर्शनंच and seeing, मानुषः man, कः who, भुवि earth, युद्धे in combat, रक्षसाम् Rakshasas, वधंच to kill, कुर्यात् done.

"Crossing the ocean, reaching Lanka, seeing Sita and killing Rakshasas in comb at was done by Hanuman. Which man can do this on earth?"
एवंसमन्त्रिवृद्धैश्चाविद्धेनबहुभाषितः ।

नत्वामुत्पनिहतेमोक्तुमर्थमर्थपरोयथा ।।6.34.23।।


मन्त्रिवृद्धैश्च aged minister, मात्राच and mother, एवम् like that, बहु many, बोधितः counselled, सः he, अर्थपरः miser, अर्थमिव holding on treasure like, त्वाम् you, मोक्तुम् set free, नउत्सहते not inclined.

"Even though his mother and aged minister counselled Ravana, he is like a miser holding on treasure not inclined to set you free."
नोत्सहत्यमृतोमोक्तुंयुद्धेत्वामितिमैथिली: ।

सामात्यस्यनृशंसस्यनिश्चयोह्येषवर्तते ।।6.34.24।।


मैथिली Mythili, युद्धे in combat, अमृतः from the other world, त्वाम् to you, मोक्तुम् to liberate, नोत्सहति not interested, इति this, एषः his option, सामात्स्य with his ministers नृशंसस्य no doubt, निश्चयः certainly, वर्तते not leave.

"O Mythili! Ravana is not interested in liberating you unless he goes to the other world in combat. (It can't happen when he is alive) This is certain. There is no doubt about this."
तदेषासुस्थिराबुद्धिर्मृत्युलोभादुपस्थिता ।

भयान्नशक्तस्त्वांमोक्तुमनिरस्तस्संयुगे ।।6.34.25।।

रक्षसानांचसर्वेषामात्मनश्चवधेनहि ।


तत् to him, मृत्युलोभात् cause death, एषा this, सुस्थिरा very steady, बुद्धिः thought, उपस्थिता impending, तु to you, संयुगे in combat, सर्वेषाम् every one, राक्षसानाम् of the Rakshasas, आत्मनश्च himself also, वधेन by death, अनिरन्तः undetermined, भयात् out of fear, त्वाम् you, मोक्तुम् to liberate, नशक्तः not able.

"This thought has come to him only to cause him death. Because of impending death, he is very steady in his mind. This Ravana will not be able to liberate you before his death and of the Rakshasas."
निहत्यरावणंसङ् ख्येसर्वथानिशितैश्शरैः ।।6.34.26।।

प्रतिनेष्यतिरामस्त्वामयोध्यामसितेक्षणे: ।


असितेक्षणे darkeyed, रामः Rama, सङ् ख्ये war, निशितैः sharp रावणम् Ravana, निहत्य killing, त्वाम् you, सर्वथा, अयोध्याम् Ayodhya, प्रतिनेष्यति will take back.

"Rama will kill Ravana in war with his sharp arrows and take you back to Ayodhya, O darkeyed lady!"
एतस्मिन्नन्तरेशब्दोभेरीशङ्खसमाकुलः ।।6.34.27।।

श्रुतोवानरसैन्यानांकम्पयन् धरणीतलम् ।


एतस्मिन् अन्तरे in the meantime from inside, वानरसैन्यानाम् Vanara troops, भेरीशङ्खसमाकुलः sounds of drums and conches, धरणीतलम् earth surface, कम्पयन् shaking, शब्दः sound, श्रुतोवै was heard.

In the meantime (while Saarana was telling Sita) the sounds of drums and conchs combined with the clamour of Vanara troops was heard and it was as though the surface of the earth was shaking.
श्रुत्वातुतद्वानरसैन्यशब्दंलङ्कागताराक्षसराजभृत्याः ।

नष्टौजसोदैन्यरीतचेष्टाःश्रेयोनपश्यन्तिनृपस्यदोषैः ।।6.34.28।।


तम् those, वानरसैन्यशब्दम् sound of Vanara troops, श्रुत्वा on hearing, लङ्कागताः present in Lanka, राक्षसराजभृत्याः by the mistakes of the king of Rakshasas, नष्टौजसः became dull, दैन्यरीतचेष्टाः overcome by depression, नृपस्य Ravana's, दोषात् mistakes, श्रेयः prospect, नपश्यन्ति could not see.

On hearing the sounds of Vanara troops, the Rakshasas present in Lanka became dull, overcome by depression, thinking that because of Ravana's mistakes they could not see any good prospects for them.
।। इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेचतुस्त्रिंशस्सर्गः ।।
This is the end of the thirty fourth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by Valmiki.
