[On Sita's request Saarana finds out Ravana's plans and reveals to her.]

athatāṅjātantāpāṅtēnavākyēnamōhitām .

saramāhlādayāmāsamahīṅghaurīmivāmbhasā ।।6.34.1।।


atha and thus, jātasantāpām put off the agony, tēnavākyēna by her words, mōditām gladdened, tām that, saramā Saarana, ghaurīm parched, mahīm earth, ambhasāiva like rainwater, samāhlādayāmāsa consoled and delighted.

Thus, Sita's agony was put off by Saarana's consoling words and Sita was glad just as the parched earth was delighted with shower of rain.
tatastasyāhitaṅsakhyāścikīrṣantīsakhīvacaḥ .

uvācakālēkālajñāsmitapūrvābhibhāṣiṇī ।।6.34.2।।


tataḥ then, kālajñā who knows the time to do, smitapūrvābhibhāṣiṇī who smiles before talking, sakhī friend, sakhyāḥ beloved, tasyāḥ her, hitam welfare, cikīrṣantī desirous of doing anything, kālē in time, vacaḥ these words, uvāca spoke.

Then Saarana who knew the right time to do so, wishing the welfare of her dear friend Sita and desirous of doing anything for her smiled before she started speaking.
utsahēyamahaṅgatvātvadvākyamasitēkṣaṇē: .

nivēdyakuśalaṅrāmēpraticchannānivartitum ।।6.34.3।।


asitēkṣaṇē dark eyed lady, aham I, praticchannā hidden, gatvā going, tvadvākyam your message, kuśalam welfare, rāmē to Rama, nivēdya communicate, nivartitum return back, utsahēyam eager.

"Dark-eyed Sita! I am eager to go (to Rama's presence) and communicate your welfare and message. I can return back hidden (from Ravana's view)."
nahimēkramamāṇāyānirālambēvihāyasi .

samarthōgatimanvētuṅpavanōgaruḍō.pivā ।।6.34.4।।


nirālambē without any support, vihāyasi going through the sky, kramamāṇāyāḥ proceeding, mē me, gatim movement, anvētum to follow, pavanaḥ wind god, garuḍō.pivā or even Garuda, nasamarthaḥ not capable.

"While I fly through the sky without any support, either the wind god or even Garuda will not be capable of following my movement."
ēvaṅbruvāṇāṅtāṅsītāsaramāṅpunarabravīt .

madhuraṅślakkṣaṇayāvācāpūrvaśōkābhipannayā ।।6.34.5।।


sītā Sita, ēvam in that manner, bruvāṇām telling, tāṅsaramām that Saarana, pūrvaśōkābhipannayā earlier filled with tears, ślakkṣaṇayā gentle countenance, vācā spoke, madhuram sweet, punaḥ again, abravīt said.

When Saarana was telling Sita in that way, Sita's face which was earlier filled with tears became pleasant and she spoke again.
samarthāgaganaṅgantumapivātvaṅrasātalam .

avagacchāmyakartavyaṅkartavyaṅtēmadantarē ।।6.34.6।।


tvam you, gaganam in the sky, apica even, rasātalam underworld, gantum , samarthā capable, akartavyam that which can't be done, madantarē for my sake, tē you, kartavyam duty, ēvagacchāmi also known to me.

"You are capable of flying through the sky or even going to the underworld. For my sake you will do what cannot be done also and that it is your bounden duty, is also known to me."
matpriyaṅyadikartavyaṅyadibuddhi: sthirātava .

jñātumicchāmitaṅgatvākiṅkarōtītirāvaṇaḥ ।।6.34.7।।


mapratiyam in my opinion, kartavyaṅyadi What you should do, tava your, buddhiḥ understood, sthirāyadi resolved firmly, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, kiṅkarōtīti What is he doing, tam to him, gatvā you go, jñātum find out, icchāmi I wish.

"In my opinion, your duty for me is to go and find out what Ravana is doing now, if you are firmly resolved."
sahimāyābalaḥkrūrōrāvaṇaśśatrurāvaṇaḥ .

māṅmōhayatiduṣṭātmāpītāmātrēvavāruṇī ।।6.34.8।।


māyābalaḥ power to conjure, śatrurāvaṇaḥ who makes enemies cry, krūraḥ cruel, duṣṭātmā evil minded, saḥrāvaṇaḥ that Ravana, pītamātrā drunk, vāruṇīva liquor, mām to me, mōhayati deluded.

"Ravana has the power of conjuring tricks, makes enemies cry. He is cruel, evil minded and deluding me as though he has drunk liquor."
tarjāpayatimāṅnityaṅbhartsāpayaticāsakṛt .

rākṣasībhissughūrābhiryāmāṅrakṣantinityaśaḥ ।।6.34.9।।


yāḥ he, mām to me, nityaśaḥ all the time, rakṣanti takes care, sughōrābhiḥ most frightful, rākṣasībhiḥ even Rakshasa women, mām to me, asakṛt repeatedly, nityam every day, tarjāpayati threatening, bhartsāpayati reproaching

"He, that Ravana makes even the frightful Rakshasa care takers threaten me and reproach me repeatedly every day."
udvignāśaṅkitācāsminasvasthaṅcamanōmama .

tadbhayāccāhamudvignāaśōkavanikāṅgatā ।।6.34.10।।


aham I am, udvignā perturbed, śaṅkitāca and doubting, asmi, mama to me, manaḥ mind, sasvastham not at ease, aham I am, aśōkavanikām in the Asoka grove, gatā remaining, tadbhayāt fear of him, udvignā perturbed.

"I am perturbed and doubtful (of my life). My mind is not at ease. Even though I am in Ashoka Grove I am disturbed."
yadināmakathātasyaniścitaṅvāpiyadbhavēt .

nivēdayēthāssarvaṅtatparōmēsyādamanugrahaḥ ।।6.34.11।।


tasya his, kathā everything, yadināma whatever decision, yat that, niścitaṅvāpi indeed certainly, bhavēt tell me, tat sarvam fully, nivēdayēthāḥ please tell, tat that, mē to me, paraḥ enemy, anugrahaḥ kindly, syāt being.

"Indeed, please tell me certainly in toot, whatever decision that enemy takes and everything. Be kind to me and tell."
sātvēvaṅbruvatīṅsītāṅsaramāvalgubhāṣiṇī .

uvācavadanaṅtasyāsspṛśantībāṣpaviklabam ।।6.34.12।।


valgubhāṣiṇī of gentle expression, sā she, saramāpi Saarana also, ēvam in that manner, bruvatīm replied, sītām to Sita, tasyāḥ her, bāṣpaviklabam covered with tears, vadanam face, spṛśantī gently wiping, uvāca replied.

Saarana who speaks sweetly, kept wiping Sita's face covered with tears gently and replied in this manner.
ēṣatēyadyabhiprāyastadāgacchāmijānakī: .

gṛhyaśatrōrabhiprāyamupāvṛttāṅcapaśyamām ।।6.34.13।।


jānakī Janaki, ēṣaḥ if it is so, tē to you, abhiprāyaḥyadi if it is your opinion, tasmāt to him, gacchāmi shall go, śatrōḥ enemy, abhiprāyam intention, gṛhya find out secretly, upāvṛttām shall return back.

"Janaki! If you think so, I shall go to Ravana secretly and find out his intention and return back."
ēvamuktvātatōgatvāsamīpaṅtasyarakṣasaḥ .

śuśrāvakathitaṅtasyarāvaṇasyasamantriṇaḥ ।।6.34.14।।


ēvam in that way, uktvā having said, tataḥ she, tasyarakṣasaḥ her attendant, samīpam near, gatvā went, samantriṇaḥ with ministers, tasya their, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, kathitam talk, śuśrāva heard.

Having said so to Sita, she (Saarana) moved closer (to Ravana) and heard Ravana's conversation with his ministers.
sāśrutvāniścayaṅtasyaniścayajñādurātmanaḥ .

punarēvāgamatkṣipramaśōkavanikāṅśubhām ।।6.34.15।।


niścayajñā known the intention, sā of him, Ravana, durātmanaḥ evil minded, tasya his, niścayam decision, śrutvā heard, kṣipram quickly, punarēva once again, śubhām beautiful, aśōkavanikām Ashoka grove, āgamat reached.

Having heard and known the intention of evil-minded Ravana, she (Saarana) quickly reached the beautiful Ashoka grove.
sāpraviṣṭātatastatradadarśajanakātmajām .

pratīkṣamāṇāṅsvāmēvabhraṣṭapadmāmivaśriyam ।।6.34.16।।


praviṣṭā having entered, sā she, tatra then, svāmēva for her, pratīkṣamāṇām waiting eagerly every moment, bhraṣṭapadmām one who lost the lotus seat, śriyam iva, janakātmajām daughter of Janaka, dadarśa saw.

On entering the Ashoka grove, she saw the daughter of Janaka eagerly waiting for her every moment, looking like Lord Vishnu's wife Lakshmi, who lost her lotus seat.
tāṅtusītāpunaḥprāptāṅsaramāṅvalgubhāṣiṇīm .

pariṣvajyacasusnigdhaṅdadaucasvayamāsanam ।।6.34.17।।


sītā Sita, punaḥ again, prāptām returning, valgubhāṣiṇīm who spoke kindly, saramām Saarana, susnigdham very glad, pariṣvajya embraced, svayam herself, āsanam seat, dadau offered.

On seeing the kind Saarana returning, Sita was very glad. She embraced her and offered a seat herself.
ihāsīnāsukhaṅsarvamākhyāhimamatattvataḥ .

krūrasyaniścayaṅtasyarāvaṇasyadurātmanaḥ ।।6.34.18।।


iha here, sukham happily, āsīnā seated, krūrasya cruel one, durātmanaḥ evil minded one, tasyarāvaṇasya that Ravana's, niścayam intention, sarvam in toot, mama to me, tattvataḥ truly, ākhyāhi reveal to me.

"Seated here happily reveals to me truly that cruel and evil minded Ravana's intention."
ēvamuktātusaramāsītayāvēpamānayā .

kathitaṅsarvamācaṣṭērāvaṇasyasamantriṇaḥ ।।6.33.19।।


vēpamānayā trembling, sītayā to Sita, ēvam like that, uktā said, saramā Saarana, samantriṇaḥ with the ministers, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, sarvam totally, kathitam all the discussion, ācaṣṭē narrated.

To the trembling Sita, Saarana narrated totally all the discussion Ravana had with the ministers.
jananyārākṣasēndrōvaitvanmōkṣārthaṅbṛhadvacaḥ .

aviddhēnacavaidēhimantrivṛddhēnabōdhitaḥ ।।6.33.20।।


vaidēhi Vaidehi, tvanmōkṣārtham to release you, rākṣasēndraḥ Lord of Rakshasa's, jananyā mother, mantrivṛddhēva aged minister, aviddhēna Aviddha, bṛhat long, vacaḥ words, bōdhitaḥ advised.

"O Vaidehi! Ravana's mother Kaikasi and the aged minister Aviddha advised the Lord of Rakshasas to release you."
dīyatāmabhisatkṛtyamanujēndrāyamaithilī .

nidarśanaṅtēparyāptaṅjanasthānēyadadbhutam ।।6.34.21।।


manujēndrāya ruler of people, abhisatkṛtya extending good hospitality, maidhilī Mythili, dīyatām given back, janasthānē at Janasthana, yat that, adbhutam amazing, tē to you, paryāptam sufficient, nidarśanam proof.

"Let Mythili be given back to the ruler of the people (Rama) offering good hospitality. The (killing of fourteen thousand Rakshasas) amazing performance at Janasthana by Rama should serve as sufficient proof to you (of the consequences)."
laṅghanaṅcasamudrasyadarśanaṅcahanūmataḥ .

vadhaṅcarakṣasāṅyuddhēkaḥkuryānmānuṣōbhuvi ।।6.34.22।।


hanūmataḥ Hanuman, samudrasya even ocean, laṅghanam Lanka, darśanaṅca and seeing, mānuṣaḥ man, kaḥ who, bhuvi earth, yuddhē in combat, rakṣasām Rakshasas, vadhaṅca to kill, kuryāt done.

"Crossing the ocean, reaching Lanka, seeing Sita and killing Rakshasas in comb at was done by Hanuman. Which man can do this on earth?"
ēvaṅsamantrivṛddhaiścāviddhēnabahubhāṣitaḥ .

natvāmutpanihatēmōktumarthamarthaparōyathā ।।6.34.23।।


mantrivṛddhaiśca aged minister, mātrāca and mother, ēvam like that, bahu many, bōdhitaḥ counselled, saḥ he, arthaparaḥ miser, arthamiva holding on treasure like, tvām you, mōktum set free, nautsahatē not inclined.

"Even though his mother and aged minister counselled Ravana, he is like a miser holding on treasure not inclined to set you free."
nōtsahatyamṛtōmōktuṅyuddhētvāmitimaithilī: .

sāmātyasyanṛśaṅsasyaniścayōhyēṣavartatē ।।6.34.24।।


maithilī Mythili, yuddhē in combat, amṛtaḥ from the other world, tvām to you, mōktum to liberate, nōtsahati not interested, iti this, ēṣaḥ his option, sāmātsya with his ministers nṛśaṅsasya no doubt, niścayaḥ certainly, vartatē not leave.

"O Mythili! Ravana is not interested in liberating you unless he goes to the other world in combat. (It can't happen when he is alive) This is certain. There is no doubt about this."
tadēṣāsusthirābuddhirmṛtyulōbhādupasthitā .

bhayānnaśaktastvāṅmōktumanirastassaṅyugē ।।6.34.25।।

rakṣasānāṅcasarvēṣāmātmanaścavadhēnahi .


tat to him, mṛtyulōbhāt cause death, ēṣā this, susthirā very steady, buddhiḥ thought, upasthitā impending, tu to you, saṅyugē in combat, sarvēṣām every one, rākṣasānām of the Rakshasas, ātmanaśca himself also, vadhēna by death, anirantaḥ undetermined, bhayāt out of fear, tvām you, mōktum to liberate, naśaktaḥ not able.

"This thought has come to him only to cause him death. Because of impending death, he is very steady in his mind. This Ravana will not be able to liberate you before his death and of the Rakshasas."
nihatyarāvaṇaṅsaṅ khyēsarvathāniśitaiśśaraiḥ ।।6.34.26।।

pratinēṣyatirāmastvāmayōdhyāmasitēkṣaṇē: .


asitēkṣaṇē darkeyed, rāmaḥ Rama, saṅ khyē war, niśitaiḥ sharp rāvaṇam Ravana, nihatya killing, tvām you, sarvathā, ayōdhyām Ayodhya, pratinēṣyati will take back.

"Rama will kill Ravana in war with his sharp arrows and take you back to Ayodhya, O dark-eyed lady!"
ētasminnantarēśabdōbhērīśaṅkhasamākulaḥ ।।6.34.27।।

śrutōvānarasainyānāṅkampayan dharaṇītalam .


ētasmin antarē in the meantime from inside, vānarasainyānām Vanara troops, bhērīśaṅkhasamākulaḥ sounds of drums and conches, dharaṇītalam earth surface, kampayan shaking, śabdaḥ sound, śrutōvai was heard.

In the meantime (while Saarana was telling Sita) the sounds of drums and conchs combined with the clamour of Vanara troops was heard and it was as though the surface of the earth was shaking.
śrutvātutadvānarasainyaśabdaṅlaṅkāgatārākṣasarājabhṛtyāḥ .

naṣṭaujasōdainyarītacēṣṭāḥśrēyōnapaśyantinṛpasyadōṣaiḥ ।।6.34.28।।


tam those, vānarasainyaśabdam sound of Vanara troops, śrutvā on hearing, laṅkāgatāḥ present in Lanka, rākṣasarājabhṛtyāḥ by the mistakes of the king of Rakshasas, naṣṭaujasaḥ became dull, dainyarītacēṣṭāḥ overcome by depression, nṛpasya Ravana's, dōṣāt mistakes, śrēyaḥ prospect, napaśyanti could not see.

On hearing the sounds of Vanara troops, the Rakshasas present in Lanka became dull, overcome by depression, thinking that because of Ravana's mistakes they could not see any good prospects for them.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēcatustriṅśassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the thirty fourth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by Valmiki.
