[Malyavan beholds evil portents and advises Ravana to make peace with Rama.]

tēnaśaṅkhavimiśrēṇabhērīśabdēnarāghavaḥ .

upayātimahābāhūrāmaḥparapurañjayaḥ ।।6.35.1।।


mahābāhuḥ mighty armed, parapurañjayaḥ conqueror of enemy cities, rāmaḥ Rama, śaṅkhavimitrēṇa blowing of conches, rāghavaḥ Raghava, bhērīśabdēna by the noise of drums, upayāti marched forth.

The mighty armed Rama, the conqueror of enemy cities, Raghava marched forth with the noise of the blowing of conches and the sounds of drums.
taṅninādaṅniśamyātharāvaṇōrākṣasēśvaraḥ .

muhūrtaṅdhyānamāsthāyasacivānabhyudaikṣata ।।6.35.2।।


atha and then, rākṣasēśvaraḥ Lord of Rakshasas, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, tam that, ninādam sound, niśamya hearing, muhūrtam for a moment, dhyānam reflecting, āsthāya considering, sacivān ministers, abhyudaikṣata looked at.

Ravana, the Lord of Rakshasas, looked at his ministers on hearing the sounds and reflecting for a moment.
athatānsacivāṅstatrasarvānābhāṣyarāvaṇaḥ .

sabhāṅsannādayan sarvāmityuvācamahābalaḥ ।।6.35.3।।

jagatsantāpankrūrōgarhayanrākṣasēśvaraḥ .


atha and then, mahābalaḥ very strong, jagatsantāpanaḥ scourge of the world, krūraḥ cruel, rākṣasēśvaraḥ Lord of Rakshasas, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, tatra, sarvān to all, sacivān companions, ābhāṣya addressed, sarvām every one, sabhām entire assembly, saṅvādayan speaking, garhayan abused, iti this, uvāca said.

Thereafter the mighty Lord of Rakshasas, a cruel one, a scourge of the world addressed the assembly of his ministers and spoke abusing them.
taraṇaṅsāgarasyāpivikramaṅbalasañjiyam ।।6.35.4।।

yaduktavantōrāmasyabhavantastanmayāśrutam .


bhavantaḥ time being, rāmasya Rama's, yat that Hanuman, asyasāgarasya that ocean, taraṇam crossing, vikramam valour, balasañjiyam prowess, uktavantaḥ have told, tat all that, mayā by me, śrutam heard.

"You have told me about the valour of Hanuman the messenger of Rama and his prowess in crossing the ocean which I heard just now."
bhavataścāpyahaṅvēmadiyuddhēsatyaparākramān ।।6.35.5।।

tūṣikānīkṣatō.nyōnyaṅviditvārāmavikramam .


dyuddhē in war, satyaparākramān of truthful valour, rāmavikramam Rama's prowess, viditvā knowing, tūṣikān stand mute, anyōnyam each other, īkṣataḥ looking at, bhavataścāpi I know you too, aham I, vēmadi know.

"Even though you are truly valorous in war, on knowing Rama's prowess, you are standing mute looking at each other. I know that."
tatastusumahāprājñōmālyavānnāmarākṣasaḥ ।।6.35.6।।

rāvaṇasyavacaśśrutvāmātuḥpaitāmahō.bravīt .


tataḥ then, sumahāprājñaḥ very wise, mātuḥ maternal, mālyavān Malyavan nāma by name, rākṣaraḥ Rakshasa, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, vacaḥ conversation, śrutvā hearing, paitāmahaḥ grandfather, abravīt said.

Then, Malyavan the maternal grandfather of Ravana, a very wise Rakshasa indeed said this on hearing Ravana's statement.
vidyāsvabhivinītōyōrājārājannayānugaḥ ।।6.35.7।।

saśāsticiramaiśvaryamarīṅścakurutēvaśē .


rājan O King, yaḥ whoever, rājā king, vidyāsu all the fourteen sciences, abhivinītaḥ path of justice, samāmagaḥ, saḥ he, ciram for long, aiśvaryam sovereignty, śāsti ruler, arīṅśca enemies, vaśē win over, kurutē enjoys

"O king! Whoever is well versed in all the fourteen sciences and is a follower of justice, he alone wins over enemies and rules the kingdom for long."
sandadhānōhikālēnavigṛhṇaṅścāribhissaha ।।6.35.8।।

svapakṣavarthanaṅkurvanmahadaiśvaryamaśnutē .


kālēna at that time, aribhiḥ enemies, sandadhānaḥ encountering, vigṛhṇān expanding, svapakṣa one's own side, varthanam acting, kurvan doing, mahat great, aiśvaryam sovereignty, aśnutē enjoys.

"Continuing to act in that way in course of time a king who encounters his enemies and expands his own side, enjoys great sovereignty."
hīyamānēnakartavyōrājñāsandhissamēvaca ।।6.35.9।।

naśatrumavamanyētajyāyānkurvītavigraham .


hīyamānēna when losing strength, samēvaca with equal, rājñā with king, sandhiḥ join, kartavyaḥ duty, śatrum with enemy, naavamanyēta not disrespecting, jyāyān quitting, vigraham hostility, kurvīta do.

"When a king is losing strength, he should join hand s with the enemy who is equal to him. He should not disrespect the enemy but quit his hostility and join him (if the enemy is more powerful)."
tanmahyaṅrōcatēsandhissaharāmēṇarāvaṇa ।।6.35.10।।

yadarthamabhiyuktā: smasītātasmaipradīyatām .


rāvaṇa Ravana, tat that, rāmēṇasaha with Rama, sandhiḥ join, mahyam for us, rōcatē agreeable, yadartham for which, abhiyuktā: favourable, smasītā Sita, tasmai to him, pratīyatām restore to him.

"O Ravana! Joining with that Rama is agreeable to me. Let that Sita for whose sake you have been attacked be restored to him."
yasyadēvarṣayassarvēgandharvāścajayaiṣiṇaḥ ।।6.35.11।।

virōthaṅmāgamastēnasandhistētēnarōcatām .


sarvē all, dēvarṣaya: celestial sages gandharvāśca Gandharvas, yasya their, jayaiṣiṇaḥ wishing victory, tēna therefore, virōdham enmity, māgamaḥ do not, tē to you, tēna therefore, sandhiḥ alliance, rōcatām desirable.

All the celestial sages and Gandharvas are wishing him victory. Therefore, do not have enmity. Making an alliance with him is desirable for you.
asṛjadbhagavānpakṣaudvāvēnahipitāmahaḥ ।।6.35.12।।

surāṇāmasurāṇāṅcadharmādharmautadāśrayau .


bhagavān God, pitāmahaḥ grandfather Brahma, surāṇāṅca deities and, asurāṇāṅca devils also, dvau both, pakṣauēva orders, asṛjat created beings, dharmādharmau virtue and vice, tadāśrayau taking refuge.

"The divine Brahma, the grandfather of the universe created two orders, deities and devils. They took the refuge of virtues and vices respectively."
dharmōhiśrūyatēpakṣīhyamarāṇāṅmahātmanām ।।6.35.13।।

adharmōrakṣasāṅpakṣōhyasurāṇāṅcarākṣasa .


rākṣasa Rakshasa, dharmaḥ righteous, mahātmānām great souls, asurāṇām and Rakshasas, pakṣī side, śrūyatē, adharmaḥ unrighteous, rakṣasām Rakshasas, asurāṇāṅca and devils, pakṣaḥhi being the side.

"The great souls were towards righteousness and Rakshasas took the side of unrighteousness."
dharmōvaigrasatē.dharmaṅtataḥkṛtamabhūdyugam ।।6.35.14।।

adharmōgrasatēdharmaṅtatastiṣyaḥpravartatē .


dharmaḥ moral merit, yadā similarly, adharmam unrighteous, grasatē destroyed, kṛtaṅyugam Krtam Yuga, abhūt not exist, adharmaḥ unrighteousness, dharmam righteousness, grasatē eclipses, tadā so also, tiṣyaḥ end, pravartatē commences.

"When moral merit destroys unrighteousness, it is called Krtayuga. So also, when virtue gets eclipsed by unrighteousness, it is called Kaliyuga."
tattvayācarayālōkāndharmōpivinihatōmahān ।।6.35.15।।

adharmaḥpragṛhītaścatēnāsmadbalinaḥparē .


sat being good, lōkān the worlds, caratā ranging, tvayā by you, mahān great, dharmō.pi even righteous conduct, vinihataḥ giving up, adharmaḥ unrighteous, pragṛhītaśca embraced by you, tēna therefore, parē enemy, asmat more than you, balinaḥ stronger.

"While you were ranging in all the worlds, you gave up righteousness and embraced unrighteousness. Therefore, the enemy who is righteous is stronger than you."
sapramādāvadivṛddhastē.dharmōhigrasatēhinaḥ ।।6.35.16।।

vivarthayatipakṣaṅcasurāṇāṅsurabhāvanaḥ .


tē you, pramadāt mistakenly, vadivṛddhaḥ nourishing, saḥ he, adharmaḥ unrighteous, vaḥ those, grasatēhi will swallow, surabhāvanaḥ cause of celestials (to become powerful), surāṇām for the divine celestials, pakṣam side, vivarthayatica grow in strength also.

"You are nourishing unrighteousness mistakenly. Therefore, it is going to swallow us. It has become the cause for the divine celestial side to become powerful."
viṣayēṣuprasaktēnayatkiñcitkāraṇātvayā ।।6.35.17।।

ṛṣīṇāmagnakalpānāmudvēgōjanitōmahān .


viṣayēṣu in matters, prasaktēna excessively engaged in, yatkiñcitkāraṇā indeed for that reason, tvayā by you, agnikalpanāmā burning fire, ṛṣīṇām to the seers, mahān great, udvēgaḥ agitation, janitaḥ created.

"Being engaged in matters of sense pleasures you have created great agitation(disturbance) in the minds of the seers (engaged in penance) who resemble gods of burning fire."
tēṣāṅprabhāvōdurdharṣaḥpradīptaivapāvakaḥ ।।6.35.18।।

tapasābhāvitātmānōdharmasyānugrahēratāḥ .

mukhyaryajñairyajantyētēnityaṅtaissairdvijātayaḥ ।।6.35.19।।

juhvatyanagīṅścavidhivadvēdāṅścōccairadhīyatē .

abhibhūyacarakṣāṅsibrahmaghōṣānudairayan ।।6.35.20।।

diśō.pividrutāssarvēstanayitnurivōṣṇagē .


tēṣām their, prabhāvaḥ power, pradīptaḥ blazing, pāvakaḥiva like fire, durdharṣaḥ difficult to overcome, tapasā austerity, bhāvitātmānaḥ great/pure souls, dharmasya virtues, anugrahē following, ratāḥ remaining, tēnityaṅ all of them, dvijātayaḥ Brahmanas, mukhyaiḥ important, taissaiḥ standing firmly, yajñaiḥ sacred fire, yat curbing the senses, yajanti sacrificing, anagīṅśca into fire, juhvati offering oblations, vidhivat traditionally, vēdān Vedas, uccaiḥ reciting, adhīyatē chanting constantly, rakṣāṅsi Rakshasas, abhibhūya subdue, brahmaghōṣān mistakes, udairayan intending, sarvē all, uṣṇagē hot season, stanayitnuḥiva like rain clouds, diśaḥ directions, api besides, vidrutāḥ running.

"Their power is difficult to overcome as they are pure souls and blazing like fire by their austerity. They follow virtues faithfully intending to acquire merit like brahmanas. They are standing firmly curbing their senses doing sacrifices offering oblations into sacrificial fires following tradition. Having subdued the Rakshasas, they are continuing to recite Vedas and on hearing Vedas the Rakshasas are running away in different directions like the rain cloud is scattered in the hot season."
ṛṣīṇāmagnikalpānāmagnihōtrāsamutthitaḥ ।।6.35.21।।

adattērakṣasāṅtējōdhūmōvyāpyadiśōdaśa .


agnikalpānām poured into fire, ṛṣīṇām by the seers, agnihōtrāsamutthitaḥ into the sacrificial fires, dhūmaḥ smoke, daśa all ten, diśaḥ directions, vyāpya spread, rakṣasām of the Rakshasas, tējaḥ brilliance, ādattē take away.

"By the spread of smoke in different directions from the sacrificial fires from the oblations offered by the seers the brilliance of the Rakshasas is taken away."
tēṣutēṣucadēśēṣupuṇyēṣvēvadṛḍhavrataiḥ ।।6.35.22।।

caryamāṇaṅtapastīvraṅsantāpayatirākṣasān .


puṇyēṣvēva at holy places dṛḍhavrataiḥ determined firmly, tēṣutēṣu those, dēśēṣu regions caryamāṇam performing, tīvram intense, tapaḥ austerities, rākṣasān Rakshasas, santāpayati tormenting.

"The intense austerities performed by the sages in different regions determined firmly are tormenting the Rakshasas."
dēvadānavayakṣēbhyōgṛhītaścavarastvayā ।।6.35.23।।

manuṣāvānarāṛkṣāgōlāṅgūlāmahābalāḥ .

balavantaihāgamyagarjantīdṛḍhavikramāḥ ।।6.35.24।।


tvayā by you, dēvadānavayakṣēbhyaḥ Devas, Danavas and Yakshas, varaḥ boons, gṛhītaḥ obtained, balavantaḥ strong, dṛḍhavikramāḥ powerful valour, mahābalāḥ mighty, manuṣyāḥ human beings, vānarāḥ Vanaras, ṛkṣāḥ Bears, gōlāṅgūlāḥ monkeys with dark face, iha now, āgamya come here, garjantī thundering.

"You have secured boons of immunity against death at the hand s of strong and mighty and powerful valour, like gods, Danavas, Yakshas and human beings. The Vanaras, Bears and monkeys with dark faces are coming here now thundering."
utpātānvividhāndṛṣṭavāghōranbahuvidhāṅstathā .

vināśamanupaśyāmisarvēṣāṅrakṣasāmaham ।।6.35.25।।


vividhān different, utpātān rising up, tathā like that, bahuvidhān in various ways, ghōrān dreadful, dṛṣṭavā seeing, aham I, sarvēṣām all, rakṣasām Rakshasas, vināśam destruction, anupaśyāmi foresee.

"Beholding different dreadful ones rising up in various directions, I foresee destruction of all Rakshasas."
kharābhisntitāghōrāmēghāḥpratibhayaṅkarāḥ .

śōṇitēnābhivarṣantilaṅkāmuṣṇēnasarvataḥ ।।6.35.26।।


kharābhisntitāḥ emitting hot thunder, ghōrāḥ formidable, pratibhayaṅkarāḥ very frightening, mēghāḥ clouds, laṅkām Lanka, sarvataḥ all over, uṣṇēna by the heat, śōṇitēna by blood, abhivarṣanti raining.

"Formidable clouds are emitting hot and most frightening thunder drenched by rain of blood all over Lanka."
rudatāṅvāhanānāṅcaprapavantyausrabindavaḥ .

dhvajādhvastāvivarṇāścanaprabhāntiyathāpuram ।।6.35.27।।


rudatām weeping, vāhanānām carrying, asrabindavaḥ tear drops, prapatanti falling, dhvajādhvastāḥ horses and elephants, vivarṇāḥ discoloured by dust, yadhāpuram as before, naprabhānti not shining.

"With tear drops falling from the eyes of weeping horses and elephants (carrying army) they are discoloured by dust and are not shining like before."
vyāḷāgōmāyavōgṛdhrāvāśyanticasubhairavam .

praviśyalaṅkāmaniśaṅsamavāyāṅścakurvatē ।।6.35.28।।


vyālāḥ wicked, gōmāyavaḥ jackals, subhairavam most frightful, vāśyanti vultures, laṅkām into Lanka, praviśya entering, maniśam deep, samavāyan gather, kurvatē crying.

"Wicked jackals and vultures are entering deep into Lanka and gathering. They are crying most frightfully."
kāḷikāḥpāṇḍurairdantai: prahasantyagrataḥsthitāḥ .

striyassvapnēṣumuṣṇnatyōgṛhāṇipratibhāṣyaca ।।6.35.29।।


kāḷikāḥ coal black, striyaḥ women, svapnēṣu in dreams, pratibhāṣya speaking, gṛhāṇi omen, muṣṇnatyaḥ plundering, agrataḥ before, sthitāḥ standing, pāṇḍuraiḥ yellow, danssaiḥ teeth, prahasanti laughing heartily.

"Women of dark colour like coal with yellow teeth are speaking unpleasant things standing before us in dreams laughing heartily."
gṛhāṇāṅbalikarmāṇiśvānaḥparyupabhuñjatē .

kharāgōṣuprajāyantēmūṣakānakulaissaha ।।6.35.30।।


gṛhāṇām in the homes, balikarmāṇi offerings of food made for gods, śvānaḥ dogs, paryubhuñjatē are coming to eat, gōṣu cows, kharāḥ donkeys, prajāyantē procreating, nakulaihiḥ mongoose, mūṣakāḥ rats saha also.

"In the houses, food offerings made for gods are eaten by dogs, donkeys are procreating cows and rats of mongoose."
mārjārādvīpibhissārthaṅsūkarāśśunakaissaha .

kinnarārākṣasaiścāpisamīyurmānuṣaissaha ।।6.35.31।।


mārjarāḥ cats, dvīpibhiḥ leopards sārtham having company, sūkarāḥ pigs, śunakaiḥsaha dogs also, kinnarāḥ Kinnera, rākṣasaiścāpi Rakshasas as well, mānuṣaiḥsaha including human beings, samēyuḥ mating.

"Cats are having the company of (mating) Leopards, pigs are mating with dogs, Kinneras with Rakshasas as well as human beings also."
pāṇḍurāraktapādāścavihaṅgāḥkālacōditāḥ .

rākṣasānāṅvināśāyakapōtāvicarantica ।।6.35.32।।


pāṇḍurāḥ white, raktapādāśca red-footed, kapōtāḥ doves, vihagāḥ birds, kālacōditāḥ impelled by time, rākṣasānām Rakshasas, vināśāya boding destruction, vicaranti move about.

"The white and red-footed doves are moving about impelled by time spirit boding destruction of Rakshasas."
vīcīkūcītivāśynatyaśśārikāvēśmasusthitāḥ .

patantigrathitāścāpinirjitāḥkalahaiṣiṇaḥ ।।6.35.33।।


vēśmasu in the households, sthitāḥ living, śārikāḥ minas, kalahaiṣiṇaḥ grapple, nirjitāḥ dead, vīcīkūcīti delight, vāśyantaḥ inhabiting, grathitāścāpi bellicose birds, patanti falling down.

"Minas living in households grappling with bellicose birds in delight are falling down dead."
pakṣiṇaścamṛgāssarvēpratyādityaṅrudantica .

karāḷōvikaṭōmuṇḍaḥpuruṣaḥkaṣṇapiṅgaḷaḥ ।।6.35.34।।

kālōgṛhāṇisarvēṣāṅkālēkālē.nvavēkṣatē .

ētānyanyāniduṣṭāninimittānyutpatantica ।।6.35.35।।


pakṣiṇaḥ birds, sarvē all, mṛgāḥ animals, pratyādityam hostile, rudanti crying, karāḷaḥ dreadful, vikaṭaḥ monstrous, muṇḍaḥ shaven head, paruṣaḥ male, kṛṣṇapiṅgaḷaḥ blackish, kālaḥ time, kālēkālē at all times, sarvēṣām all, gṛhāṇi households, anvavēkṣatē considering, ētāni all this, anyāni complete, duṣṭāni sinister nimittāni portents, utpatanti making appearance.

All birds and animals are making hostile noise. Time is always coming in a dreadful and monstrous blackish form with a shaved head, morning, and evening. Considering all these sinister portents are making an appearance at all households.
viṣṇuṅmanyāmahērāmaṅmānuṣaṅrūpamāsthitam .

nahimānuṣamātrō.saurāghavōdṛḍhavikramaḥ ।।6.35.36।।

yēnabaddhaḥsamudrēcasētuḥsaparamādbhutaḥ .

kuruṣvanararājēnasadhaniṅrāmēṇarāvaṇa ।।6.35.37।।

jñātvāvadhāryakarmāṇikriyatāmāyatikṣamam .


rāmam Rama, mānuṣam human being, rūpam form, āstitam assuming, viṣṇum Vishnu, manyāmahē Lord, dṛḍhavikramaḥ fortitude and prowess, asau oh, rāghavaḥ Raghava, mānuṣamātraḥ only a human being, nahi not, yēna therefore, samudrē on the ocean, paramādbhutaḥ most amazing, saḥ he, sētuḥ bridge, baddhaḥ constructing, rāvaṇa Ravana, nararājēna ruler of men, rāmēṇa with Rama, sandhim align, kuruṣva make, karmāṇi action, jñātvā know, avadhārya determine correctly, āyatikṣamam after careful thinking, kriyatām be done.

Rama is Lord Vishnu in human form endowed with fortitude and prowess. One who has constructed an amazing bridge on the ocean is not just a human being. O Ravana! Align with the ruler of men, Sri Rama. After careful thinking and determining correctly, do what is good.
idaṅvacastatraniśamyamālyavānparīkṣyarakṣōdhipatērmanaḥpunaḥ .

anuttamēṣūttamapauruṣōbalībabhūvatūṣṇīṅsamavēkṣyarāvaṇam ।।6.35.38।।


anuttamēṣu best among men, uttamapauruṣaḥ foremost counsellor, balī strong, mālyavān Malyavan, tatra thereafter, idaṅvacaḥ these words, niśamya beholding, punaḥ again, rakṣōdhipatēḥ Lord of Rakshasas, manaḥ heart, parīkṣya observing keenly, rāvaṇam to Ravana, samavēkṣya looking at, tūṣṇīṅbabhūva remained silent.

"Best among men and foremost of counsellors, mighty Malyavan beholding Ravana, the Lord of Rakshasas and keenly observing his mind (that Ravana is not liking the counsel) remained silent."
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēpañcatriṅśassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the thirty fifth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
