[Ravana rejects Malyavan's advice, consults ministers and asks Prahastha and others to guard the gates and enters the gynaecium.]

तत्तुमाल्यवतोवाक्यंहितमुक्तंदशाननः ।

नमर्षयतिदुष्टात्माकालस्यवशमागतः ।।6.36.1।।


दुष्टात्मा evil minded, दशाननः the tenheaded, कालस्य death 's, वशम् fallen under the sway, आगतः come, माल्यवतः Malyavatha, उक्तम् told, तत् that, वाक्यम् words of advice, नमर्षयति not tolerated.

The tenheaded Ravana, having fallen under the sway of death could not tolerate Malyavatha's words of advice.
नबद् ध्वाभ्रुकुटींवक्त्रेक्रोधस्यवशमागतः ।

अमर्षात्परिवृत्ताक्षोमाल्यवन्तमथाब्रवीत् ।।6.36.2।।


सः he, क्रोधस्य by anger, वशम् submitted to, आगतः come under, वक्त्रे in the face, भ्रुकुटिम् eyebrows, बद् ध्वा knitting, अमर्षात् intolerant, परिवृत्ताक्षः rolling his eyes, अथ and then, माल्यवन्तम् to Malyavan, अब्रवीत् said.

Then Ravana who had come under the influence of anger, knitting the brows of his face rolling his eyes said to Malyavan.
हितबुध्यायदहितंवचःपरुषमुच्यते ।

परपक्षंप्रनिश्यैवनैतच्च्रोत्रगतंमम ।।6.36.3।।


परपक्षम् enemies side, प्रविश्यैव taking, हितबुध्या salutary sense, यत् those, परुषम् harsh, अहितम् not meaning good, वचः words, उच्यते have uttered, एतत् all these, मम to me, श्रोत्रगतम् listen to what was told earlier, न not.

"Harsh and not wellmeaning words have been uttered by you taking the enemy's side. I will not listen to what you said earlier."
मानुषंकृपणंराममेकंशाखामृगाश्रयम् ।

समर्थंमन्यसेकेनत्यक्तंपित्रावनालयम् ।।6.36.4।।


मानुषम् human, कृपणम् wretched, एकम् alone, शाखामृगाश्रयम् who has the help of herbivorous animals to help, पित्रा by father, त्यक्तम् forsaken, वनालयम् forest as asylum, रामम् Rama, समर्थम् capable, केन by what, मन्यसे reason.

"For what reason do you say that a wretched human being, alone, forsaken by a father who has taken asylum in the forest, who is taking the help of vanaras is capable?"
रक्षसामीश्वरंमांचदेवानांचभयङ्करम् ।

हीनंमांमन्यसेकेनह्यहीनंसर्वविक्रमैः ।।6.36.5।।


रक्षसाम् Rakshasas, ईश्वरम् Lord, देवानांच including Devas, भयङ्करम् fearfulterror, माम् me, सर्वविक्रमैः all kinds of prowess, अहीनम् not deficient, माम् me, हीनम् deficient, केन why, मन्यसे think.

"The Lord of Rakshasas is a terror to all including the Devas and am endowed with all kinds of prowess and efficiency. Why do you think I am deficient?"
वीरद्वेषेणवाशङ्केपक्षपातेनवारिपोः ।

त्वयाहंपरुषाण्युक्तःपरप्रोत्साहनेनवा ।।6.36.6।।


वीरद्वेषेण out of hatred to hero, रिपोः enemy, पक्षपातेन out of one sided view, पर others, प्रोत्साहनेनवा by the encouragement of, अहम् I am, त्वया by your, परुषाणि harsh words, उक्तः spoken, शङ्के suspect.

"I suspect that out of hatred towards me, you are speaking such harsh words to a hero encouraged by the enemy."
प्रभवन्तंपदस्थंहिपरुषंकोऽभिभाषते ।

पण्डितश्शास्त्रतत्त्वज्ञोविनाप्रोत्साहनाद्रिपोः ।।6.36.7।।


शास्त्रतत्त्वज्ञः learned in the truth of sastras, पण्डितः learned, कः who, विनाप्रोत्साहनाद्रिपोः without instigation, प्रभवन्तम् in power, पदस्थम् address, परुषम् harsh, अभिभाषते will speak.

"Which person who has learned the truth of sastras will address such harsh words to one in power without instigation?"
आनीयचवनासतीतांपद्महीनामिवश्रियम् ।

किमर्थंप्रतिदास्यामिराघवस्यभयादहम् ।।6.36.8।।


पद्महीनाम् without the lotus, श्रियम् इव like Lakshmi, सीताम् Sita, वनात् from forest, आनीय brought her, अहम् I, राघवस्य Rama's, भयात् fear, किमर्थम् for what, प्रतिदास्यामि will not return.

"Sita who is like Lakshmi without the lotus has been brought from the forest. Why would I return her for the fear of Rama?"
वृतंवानरकोटीभिस्ससुग्रीवंसलक्ष्मणम् ।

पश्यकैश्चिदहोभिस्त्वंराघवंनिहतंमया ।।6.36.9।।


कैश्चित् in short time, अहोभिः praised, मया by me, निहतम् killed वानरकोटिभिः crores of Vanaras, वृतम् surrounding, ससुग्रीवम् Sugriva, सलक्ष्मणम् and that Lakshmana, राघवम् Raghava, पश्य see.

"Indeed, in a short while crores of Vanaras, Sugriva and also Lakshmana and Raghava will be killed by me. Oh!"
द्वन्द्वेयस्यनतिष्ठन्तिदैवतान्यपिसंयुगे ।

सकस्माद्रावणोयुद्धेभयमाहारयिष्यति ।।6.36.10।।


दैवतान्यपि even gods, युद्धे in war, यस्य, द्वन्द्वे duel, नतिष्ठन्ति not with stand, सः that he, रावणः Ravana, युद्धे in war, कस्मात् whom, भयम् fear, आहारयिष्यति striking.

As even gods will not with stand Ravana in war, of whom Ravana will be afraid of in a duel.
द्विधाभज्येयमप्येवंननमेयंतुकस्यचित् ।

एषमेसहजोदोषस्स्वभावोदुरतिक्रमः ।।6.36.11।।


द्विधा into two, भज्येयमपि resorts to breaks my head, एवम् also, कस्यचित् his mind, ननमेयम् bend myself to any one, एषः in that way, मे I, सहजः natural, दोषः weakness, स्वभावः nature, दुरतिक्रमः to overcome.

"I would break my head into two also but not bend my head to anyone. It is my weakness. It is hard to overcome nature."
यदितावत्समुद्रेतुसेतुर्बद्धोयदृच्छया ।

रामेणविस्मयःकोऽत्रयेवमेभयमागतम् ।।6.36.12।।


रामेण by Rama, यदृच्छया by chance, समुद्रे on the ocean, सेतुः bridge, बद्धःयदि constructed तावत् by that, अत्र there, येन because of that, मे to me, भयम् fear, आगतम् overtaken, विस्मयः wonder, कः what.

"Rama has constructed a bridge by chance and because of that you are fearing what wonder is there in it?"
सतुतीर्त्वार्णवंरामस्सहवानरसेनया ।

प्रतिजानामितेसत्यंनजीवन्प्रतियास्यति ।।6.36.13।।


सःराघवः that Raghava, वानरसेवयासह along with Vanara army, आर्णवम् sea, तीर्त्वा crossed water, जीवन् with life, नप्रतियाप्यति not going back, ते, सत्यम् true, प्रतिजानामि will not return back.

"Rama having crossed the sea with his Vanara army will not go back with life. It is true."
एवंब्रुवाणंसंरब्धंरुष्टंविज्ञायरावणम् ।

व्रीळितोमाल्यवान्वाक्यंनोत्तरंप्रत्यपद्यत ।।6.36.14।।


एवं in that way, संरब्धम् abashed, ब्रुवाणम् speaking, रावणम् to Ravana, रुष्टम् anger, विज्ञाय knowing, माल्यवान् Malyavan, व्रीळितः feeling shy, उत्तरम् reply, वाक्यम् words, नप्रत्यपद्यत not uttered.

When Ravana was abashed and speaking in that way realizing that he is angry, Malyavan did not reply feeling shy.
जयाशिषाचराजानंवर्धयित्वायथोचितम् ।

माल्यवानभ्यनुज्ञातोजगामस्वंनिवेशनम् ।।6.36.15।।


माल्यवान् Malyavan, राजानम् to the king, जयाशिषाच blessing to succeed यथोचितम् in accordance with tradition, स्वम् his, निवेशनम् house, जगाम went.

Malyavan offered blessings to the king for success in accordance with tradition left to his house.
रावणस्तुसहामात्योमन्त्रयित्वाविमृश्यच ।

लङ्कायामतुलांगुप्तिंकारयामासराक्षसः ।।6.36.16।।


राक्षसः Rakshasas, रावणस्तु with Ravana, सहामात्यः with companions, मन्त्रयित्वा with ministers, विमृश्य holding discussions, तदा then, लङ्कायां for Lanka, अतुलां unequalled, गुप्तिम् protection, कारयामास made arrangements.

Ravana then held discussions with his companions and ministers and made unequalled arrangements for (safety of) Lanka.
व्यादिदेशसपूर्वस्यांप्रहस्तंद्वारिराक्षसम् ।

दक्षिणस्यांमहावीर्यौमहापार्श्वमहादरौ ।।6.36.17।।

पश्चिमायामथोद्वारिपुत्रमिन्द्रजितंतदा ।

व्यादिदेशमयामायंबहूभीराक्षसैर्भहुभिर्वृतम् ।।6.36.18।।


सः he, पूर्वस्यांद्वारि at the eastern gate, प्रहस्तम् Prahastha, राक्षसम् Rakshasa, व्यादिदेश posted, दक्षिणस्याम् at the southern gate, महावीर्यौदि of great prowess, महापर्श्वा Mahaparsva महोदरौ Mahodara, व्यादिदेश posted, अथ and, तदा like that, पश्चिमायांद्वारि at the western gate, महामायाम् Mahamaya, बहुभिः many, राक्षसैः Rakshasas, वृतम् surrounded by, पुत्रम् son, इन्द्रजितम् Indrajith, व्यादिदेश assigned duty.

Ravana posted Prahastha surrounded by many Rakshasas at the east gate, and the Rakshasas of great prowess, Mahaparsva and Mahodara at the southern gate, and like that Mahamaya and Indrajith, his own son at the western gate.
उतरस्यांपुरद्वारिव्यादिश्यशुकसारणौ ।

स्वयंचात्रगमिष्यामिमन्त्रिणस्तानुवाचह ।।6.36.19।।


उत्तरस्याम् at the north, पुरद्वारि of the city gate, शुकसारणौ Suka and Sarana, व्यादिश्य posted, स्वयम् himself, चअत्र also there, गमिष्यामि reached, तान् his, मन्त्रिणः ministers, उवाच told.

Ravana posted Suka and Sarana at the north gate of Lanka and himself reached there and told the ministers that he would be there.
राक्षसांतुविरूपाक्षंमहावीर्यपराक्रमम् ।

मध्यमेऽस्थापयद्गुल्मेबहुभिस्सहराक्षसैः ।।6.36.20।।


महावीर्यपराक्रमम् endowed with extraordinary strength, विरूपाक्षम् Virupaksha,राक्षसाम् Rakshasa, बहुभिः and many more, राक्षसैःसह along with Rakshasas, मध्यमे middle, गुल्मे of city, आस्थापयत् placed.

In the middle of the city, he placed Virupaksha, a Rakshasa endowed with extraordinary strength and many more Rakshasas.
एवंविधानंलङ्कायांकृत्वाराक्षसपुङ्गवः ।

कृतकृत्यमिवात्मानंमन्यतेकालचोदितः ।।6.36.21।।


राक्षसपुङ्गवः best of Rakshasas, लङ्कायाः in Lanka, एवम् in that way, विधानम् order, कृत्वा having done, कालचोदितः sway of destiny, आत्मानम् his own, कृतकृत्यमिव as if accomplished the task, मन्यते thought.

The best of Rakshasas under the sway of destiny, having been ordered in that way in Lanka, Ravana felt as though he had accomplished the task.
विसर्जयामासततस्समन्त्रिणोविधानमाज्ञाप्यपुरस्यपुष्कलम् ।

जयाशिषामन्त्रिगणेनपूजितोविवेशचाऽन्तःपुरमृद्धिमन्महत् ।।6.36.22।।


सः he, पुरस्य for Lanka, पुष्कलम् adequately, विधानम् arrangements, आज्ञाप्य having ordered, ततः thereafter, मन्त्रिणः with ministers, विसर्जयामास taking leave, मन्त्रिगणेव body of ministers, जयाशिषा uttering benediction for success, पूजितः blessing सः him, बुद्धिमत् with prosperity, महत् great, अन्तःपुरम् inner chambers, विवेश entered.

There after making arrangements adequately for the protection of Lanka, taking leave of ministers who offered blessings for his prosperity and uttered words of benediction for his success Ravana entered the inner chambers of the palace.
