[Ravana rejects Malyavan's advice, consults ministers and asks Prahastha and others to guard the gates and enters the gynaecium.]

tattumālyavatōvākyaṅhitamuktaṅdaśānanaḥ .

namarṣayatiduṣṭātmākālasyavaśamāgataḥ ।।6.36.1।।


duṣṭātmā evil minded, daśānanaḥ the ten-headed, kālasya death 's, vaśam fallen under the sway, āgataḥ come, mālyavataḥ Malyavatha, uktam told, tat that, vākyam words of advice, namarṣayati not tolerated.

The ten-headed Ravana, having fallen under the sway of death could not tolerate Malyavatha's words of advice.
nabad dhvābhrukuṭīṅvaktrēkrōdhasyavaśamāgataḥ .

amarṣātparivṛttākṣōmālyavantamathābravīt ।।6.36.2।।


saḥ he, krōdhasya by anger, vaśam submitted to, āgataḥ come under, vaktrē in the face, bhrukuṭim eyebrows, bad dhvā knitting, amarṣāt intolerant, parivṛttākṣaḥ rolling his eyes, atha and then, mālyavantam to Malyavan, abravīt said.

Then Ravana who had come under the influence of anger, knitting the brows of his face rolling his eyes said to Malyavan.
hitabudhyāyadahitaṅvacaḥparuṣamucyatē .

parapakṣaṅpraniśyaivanaitaccrōtragataṅmama ।।6.36.3।।


parapakṣam enemies side, praviśyaiva taking, hitabudhyā salutary sense, yat those, paruṣam harsh, ahitam not meaning good, vacaḥ words, ucyatē have uttered, ētat all these, mama to me, śrōtragatam listen to what was told earlier, na not.

"Harsh and not well-meaning words have been uttered by you taking the enemy's side. I will not listen to what you said earlier."
mānuṣaṅkṛpaṇaṅrāmamēkaṅśākhāmṛgāśrayam .

samarthaṅmanyasēkēnatyaktaṅpitrāvanālayam ।।6.36.4।।


mānuṣam human, kṛpaṇam wretched, ēkam alone, śākhāmṛgāśrayam who has the help of herbivorous animals to help, pitrā by father, tyaktam forsaken, vanālayam forest as asylum, rāmam Rama, samartham capable, kēna by what, manyasē reason.

"For what reason do you say that a wretched human being, alone, forsaken by a father who has taken asylum in the forest, who is taking the help of vanaras is capable?"
rakṣasāmīśvaraṅmāṅcadēvānāṅcabhayaṅkaram .

hīnaṅmāṅmanyasēkēnahyahīnaṅsarvavikramaiḥ ।।6.36.5।।


rakṣasām Rakshasas, īśvaram Lord, dēvānāṅca including Devas, bhayaṅkaram fearful/terror, mām me, sarvavikramaiḥ all kinds of prowess, ahīnam not deficient, mām me, hīnam deficient, kēna why, manyasē think.

"The Lord of Rakshasas is a terror to all including the Devas and am endowed with all kinds of prowess and efficiency. Why do you think I am deficient?"
vīradvēṣēṇavāśaṅkēpakṣapātēnavāripōḥ .

tvayāhaṅparuṣāṇyuktaḥparaprōtsāhanēnavā ।।6.36.6।।


vīradvēṣēṇa out of hatred to hero, ripōḥ enemy, pakṣapātēna out of one sided view, para others, prōtsāhanēnavā by the encouragement of, aham I am, tvayā by your, paruṣāṇi harsh words, uktaḥ spoken, śaṅkē suspect.

"I suspect that out of hatred towards me, you are speaking such harsh words to a hero encouraged by the enemy."
prabhavantaṅpadasthaṅhiparuṣaṅkō.bhibhāṣatē .

paṇḍitaśśāstratattvajñōvināprōtsāhanādripōḥ ।।6.36.7।।


śāstratattvajñaḥ learned in the truth of sastras, paṇḍitaḥ learned, kaḥ who, vināprōtsāhanādripōḥ without instigation, prabhavantam in power, padastham address, paruṣam harsh, abhibhāṣatē will speak.

"Which person who has learned the truth of sastras will address such harsh words to one in power without instigation?"
ānīyacavanāsatītāṅpadmahīnāmivaśriyam .

kimarthaṅpratidāsyāmirāghavasyabhayādaham ।।6.36.8।।


padmahīnām without the lotus, śriyam iva like Lakshmi, sītām Sita, vanāt from forest, ānīya brought her, aham I, rāghavasya Rama's, bhayāt fear, kimartham for what, pratidāsyāmi will not return.

"Sita who is like Lakshmi without the lotus has been brought from the forest. Why would I return her for the fear of Rama?"
vṛtaṅvānarakōṭībhissasugrīvaṅsalakṣmaṇam .

paśyakaiścidahōbhistvaṅrāghavaṅnihataṅmayā ।।6.36.9।।


kaiścit in short time, ahōbhiḥ praised, mayā by me, nihatam killed vānarakōṭibhiḥ crores of Vanaras, vṛtam surrounding, sasugrīvam Sugriva, salakṣmaṇam and that Lakshmana, rāghavam Raghava, paśya see.

"Indeed, in a short while crores of Vanaras, Sugriva and also Lakshmana and Raghava will be killed by me. Oh!"
dvandvēyasyanatiṣṭhantidaivatānyapisaṅyugē .

sakasmādrāvaṇōyuddhēbhayamāhārayiṣyati ।।6.36.10।।


daivatānyapi even gods, yuddhē in war, yasya, dvandvē duel, natiṣṭhanti not with stand, saḥ that he, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, yuddhē in war, kasmāt whom, bhayam fear, āhārayiṣyati striking.

As even gods will not with stand Ravana in war, of whom Ravana will be afraid of in a duel.
dvidhābhajyēyamapyēvaṅnanamēyaṅtukasyacit .

ēṣamēsahajōdōṣassvabhāvōduratikramaḥ ।।6.36.11।।


dvidhā into two, bhajyēyamapi resorts to breaks my head, ēvam also, kasyacit his mind, nanamēyam bend myself to any one, ēṣaḥ in that way, mē I, sahajaḥ natural, dōṣaḥ weakness, svabhāvaḥ nature, duratikramaḥ to overcome.

"I would break my head into two also but not bend my head to anyone. It is my weakness. It is hard to overcome nature."
yaditāvatsamudrētusēturbaddhōyadṛcchayā .

rāmēṇavismayaḥkō.trayēvamēbhayamāgatam ।।6.36.12।।


rāmēṇa by Rama, yadṛcchayā by chance, samudrē on the ocean, sētuḥ bridge, baddhaḥyadi constructed tāvat by that, atra there, yēna because of that, mē to me, bhayam fear, āgatam overtaken, vismayaḥ wonder, kaḥ what.

"Rama has constructed a bridge by chance and because of that you are fearing what wonder is there in it?"
satutīrtvārṇavaṅrāmassahavānarasēnayā .

pratijānāmitēsatyaṅnajīvanpratiyāsyati ।।6.36.13।।


saḥrāghavaḥ that Raghava, vānarasēvayāsaha along with Vanara army, ārṇavam sea, tīrtvā crossed water, jīvan with life, napratiyāpyati not going back, tē, satyam true, pratijānāmi will not return back.

"Rama having crossed the sea with his Vanara army will not go back with life. It is true."
ēvaṅbruvāṇaṅsaṅrabdhaṅruṣṭaṅvijñāyarāvaṇam .

vrīḷitōmālyavānvākyaṅnōttaraṅpratyapadyata ।।6.36.14।।


ēvaṅ in that way, saṅrabdham abashed, bruvāṇam speaking, rāvaṇam to Ravana, ruṣṭam anger, vijñāya knowing, mālyavān Malyavan, vrīḷitaḥ feeling shy, uttaram reply, vākyam words, napratyapadyata not uttered.

When Ravana was abashed and speaking in that way realizing that he is angry, Malyavan did not reply feeling shy.
jayāśiṣācarājānaṅvardhayitvāyathōcitam .

mālyavānabhyanujñātōjagāmasvaṅnivēśanam ।।6.36.15।।


mālyavān Malyavan, rājānam to the king, jayāśiṣāca blessing to succeed yathōcitam in accordance with tradition, svam his, nivēśanam house, jagāma went.

Malyavan offered blessings to the king for success in accordance with tradition left to his house.
rāvaṇastusahāmātyōmantrayitvāvimṛśyaca .

laṅkāyāmatulāṅguptiṅkārayāmāsarākṣasaḥ ।।6.36.16।।


rākṣasaḥ Rakshasas, rāvaṇastu with Ravana, sahāmātyaḥ with companions, mantrayitvā with ministers, vimṛśya holding discussions, tadā then, laṅkāyāṅ for Lanka, atulāṅ unequalled, guptim protection, kārayāmāsa made arrangements.

Ravana then held discussions with his companions and ministers and made unequalled arrangements for (safety of) Lanka.
vyādidēśasapūrvasyāṅprahastaṅdvārirākṣasam .

dakṣiṇasyāṅmahāvīryaumahāpārśvamahādarau ।।6.36.17।।

paścimāyāmathōdvāriputramindrajitaṅtadā .

vyādidēśamayāmāyaṅbahūbhīrākṣasairbhahubhirvṛtam ।।6.36.18।।


saḥ he, pūrvasyāṅdvāri at the eastern gate, prahastam Prahastha, rākṣasam Rakshasa, vyādidēśa posted, dakṣiṇasyām at the southern gate, mahāvīryaudi of great prowess, mahāparśvā Mahaparsva mahōdarau Mahodara, vyādidēśa posted, atha and, tadā like that, paścimāyāṅdvāri at the western gate, mahāmāyām Mahamaya, bahubhiḥ many, rākṣasaiḥ Rakshasas, vṛtam surrounded by, putram son, indrajitam Indrajith, vyādidēśa assigned duty.

Ravana posted Prahastha surrounded by many Rakshasas at the east gate, and the Rakshasas of great prowess, Mahaparsva and Mahodara at the southern gate, and like that Mahamaya and Indrajith, his own son at the western gate.
utarasyāṅpuradvārivyādiśyaśukasāraṇau .

svayaṅcātragamiṣyāmimantriṇastānuvācaha ।।6.36.19।।


uttarasyām at the north, puradvāri of the city gate, śukasāraṇau Suka and Sarana, vyādiśya posted, svayam himself, caatra also there, gamiṣyāmi reached, tān his, mantriṇaḥ ministers, uvāca told.

Ravana posted Suka and Sarana at the north gate of Lanka and himself reached there and told the ministers that he would be there.
rākṣasāṅtuvirūpākṣaṅmahāvīryaparākramam .

madhyamē.sthāpayadgulmēbahubhissaharākṣasaiḥ ।।6.36.20।।


mahāvīryaparākramam endowed with extraordinary strength, virūpākṣam Virupaksha,rākṣasām Rakshasa, bahubhiḥ and many more, rākṣasaiḥsaha along with Rakshasas, madhyamē middle, gulmē of city, āsthāpayat placed.

In the middle of the city, he placed Virupaksha, a Rakshasa endowed with extraordinary strength and many more Rakshasas.
ēvaṅvidhānaṅlaṅkāyāṅkṛtvārākṣasapuṅgavaḥ .

kṛtakṛtyamivātmānaṅmanyatēkālacōditaḥ ।।6.36.21।।


rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ best of Rakshasas, laṅkāyāḥ in Lanka, ēvam in that way, vidhānam order, kṛtvā having done, kālacōditaḥ sway of destiny, ātmānam his own, kṛtakṛtyamiva as if accomplished the task, manyatē thought.

The best of Rakshasas under the sway of destiny, having been ordered in that way in Lanka, Ravana felt as though he had accomplished the task.
visarjayāmāsatatassamantriṇōvidhānamājñāpyapurasyapuṣkalam .

jayāśiṣāmantrigaṇēnapūjitōvivēśacā.ntaḥpuramṛddhimanmahat ।।6.36.22।।


saḥ he, purasya for Lanka, puṣkalam adequately, vidhānam arrangements, ājñāpya having ordered, tataḥ thereafter, mantriṇaḥ with ministers, visarjayāmāsa taking leave, mantrigaṇēva body of ministers, jayāśiṣā uttering benediction for success, pūjitaḥ blessing saḥ him, buddhimat with prosperity, mahat great, antaḥpuram inner chambers, vivēśa entered.

There after making arrangements adequately for the protection of Lanka, taking leave of ministers who offered blessings for his prosperity and uttered words of benediction for his success Ravana entered the inner chambers of the palace.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēṣaṭitraṅśassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the thirty sixth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
