[Sri Rama keeps awake with others and observes the forests, beautiful gardens, parks, and palaces of Lanka from the top of Suvela mountain.]

tāṅrātrimuṣitāstatrasuvēlēharipuṅgavāḥ .

laṅkāyāṅdadṛśurvīrāvanānyupavanānica ।।6.39.1।।


vīrāḥ heroic, haripuṅgavāḥ leader of monkeys, tatra there, suvēlē on the Suvela, tām on that, rātrim night, uṣitāḥ kept awake, laṅkāyām Lanka, vanāni forests, upavanānica and gardens, dadṛśaḥ saw.

The heroic leader of the monkeys kept awake that night on the Suvela and saw forests and gardens there in Lanka.
samasaumyāniramyāṇiviśālānyāyatānica .

dṛṣṭiramyāṇitēdṛṣṭavābabhūvurjātavismayāḥ ।।6.39.2।।


tē they, samasaumyāni even terrain with, ramyāṇi beautiful, viśālāni expansive, āyatānica long and continuous sanctuary, dṛṣṭiramyāṇi feast to the eyes, dṛṣṭavā on seeing, jātavismayāḥ lovely to look at, babhūvuḥ amazed.

They were amazed to see the even terrain, beautiful and expansive, long, and continuous sanctuary lovely to look at being a feast to the eyes.
campakāśōkapunnāgasālatālasamākulā .

tamālavanasañchannānāgamālāsamāvṛtā ।।6.39.3।।

hintālairarjunairnīpaissaptaparṇaiścapuṣpitaiḥ .

tilakaiḥkarṇikāraiścapāṭalaiścasamantataḥ ।।6.39.4।।

śuśubhēpuṣpitāgraiścalatāparigatairdrumaiḥ .

laṅkābahuvidhairdivyairyathēndrasyāmarāvatī ।।6.39.5।।

vicitrakusumōpētairaktakōmalapallavaiḥ .

śādvalaiścatathānīpaiścitrābhirvanarājibhiḥ ।।6.39.6।।


campakāśōkapunnāgasālatālasamākulā Champaka, Asoka, Punnaga, Sala, Tala, Samala trees, tamālavanasañchannā Tamala forest concealed, nāgamālāsamāvṛtā surrounded with Nagamala trees, laṅkām in Lanka, samantataḥ all over, hintālaiḥ Hintala, arjunaiḥ Arjuna, nīpaiḥ Neepa, supuṣpitaiḥ in full bloom, saptaparṇaiḥ Saptaparni, tilakaiḥ Tilaka, karṇikāraiśca karnakara, pāṭalaiḥ Patala, puṣpitāgraiḥ crests laden with flowers, latāparigatadrumaiḥ intertwined with creepers, vicitrakusumōpētaiḥ wonderful variety of flowers, raktakōmalapallavaiḥ clothed with red tender leaves, divyaiḥ wonderful, bahuvidhaiḥ of diverse kind, tathā similarly, nīlaiḥ Neela, śādvalaiḥ sadala, citrābhiḥ colourful, vanarājibhiḥ king of forest, indrasya Indra's capital, amarāvatīiva like Amaravathi, śuśubhē shining.

Thickly covered with trees like Champaka, Asoka, Punnaga, Sala, Tala, Samala and Tamala trees concealing the woods, surrounded with Nagamala trees all over ; and Hintala, Arjuna and Neepa in full bloom, Saptaparni, Tilaka, Karnakara and Patala trees with crests laden with flowers, intertwined with creepers and wonderful variety of flowers; trees with tender red leaves as if clothe d in red, flowers of diverse kind and similarly colourful Neela and Sadala as king of forest, it was shining like Amaravathi, capital of Indra.
gandhāḍhyānyabhiramyāṇipuṣpāṇicaphalānica .

dhārayantyagamāstatrabhūṣaṇānīvamānavāḥ ।।6.39.7।।


tatra there, agamāḥ having reached, gandhāḍhyāni bore fragrance, abhiramyāṇi very beautiful, puṣpāṇica flowers, phalānica and fruits, mānavāḥ humans, bhūṣaṇānīva ornaments, dhārayatani as though wearing.

Having reached there where trees bore fragrance, very beautiful flowers and fruits seemed as though humans were wearing ornaments.
taccaitrarathasaṅkāśaṅmanōjñaṅnandanōpamam .

vanaṅsarvarartukaṅramyaṅśuśubhēṣaṭapadāyutam ।।6.39.8।।


caitrarathasaṅkāśam with chaitra chariot, manōjñam delightful to the mind, nandanōpamam like Nandana garden of Indra, sarvartukam green in all seasons, ṣaṭapadāyutam filled with bees, tat that, vanam garden, śuśubhē very wonderful.

Appearing like the chaitra chariot of Kubera, Nandana garden of Indra, green in all seasons filled with bees, the garden was a wonderful delight.
natyūhakōyaṣṭimakairnṛtyamānaiścabarhibhi .

rutaṅparabhṛtānāṅcaśuśruvurvannirjharē ।।6.39.9।।


vannirjharē abounding in cascades, nātyūhakōyaṣṭibhakaiḥ gallinules, lapwings, herons, nṛtyamānaiḥ dancing, barhiṇaiḥ peacocks, parabhṛtānām cuckoos, rutam ca and singing, śuśruvē heard.

The Vanaras heard the singing of cuckoos, dancing of peacocks, crying of gallinules, lapwings and herons from the gardens abounding in cascades.
nityamattavihaṅgānibhramarācaritānica .

kōkilākulaṣaṇḍānivihagābhirutānica ।।6.39.10।।

bhṛṅgarājābhigītānibhramaraissēvitānica .

kōṇālakavighuṣṭānisārasābhirutānica ।।6.39.11।।

viviśustētatastānivanānyupavanānica .

hṛṣṭāḥpramuditāvīrāharayaḥkāmarūpiṇaḥ ।।6.39.12।।


tataḥ thereafter, tē they, hṛṣṭāḥ joyful, pramuditāḥ happily, vīrāḥ heroes, kāmarūpiṇaḥ who can change form at will, harayaḥ monkeys, nityamattavihaṅgāni inhabited by birds ever heated with emotion, bhramarācaritānica wandering bees, kōkirākulakhaṇḍāni clusters of trees covered with cuckoos, vihaṅgābhirutānica rendered noisy by birds singing, bhṛṅgarājādhigītāni resounded with the singing of large black bees, bhramaraissēvitānica bees clinging, kōṇālakavighuṣṭāni mingled sound of various birds, sārasābhirutāni noise of cries of cranes, tāni all that, vanāni woods, upavanānica and gardens, viviśuḥ entered.

There after the rejoiced heroic Vanaras who can change their form at will happily entered the woods and gardens inhabited by birds in heat full of emotion, trees covered with cuckoos, and wandering bees, rendered noisy by birds, resounded with the singing of large black bees and bees going around clinging to trees, mingled with sounds of various birds and noise of cries of cranes.
tēṣāṅpraviśatāṅtatravānarāṇāṅmahaujasām .

puṣpasaṅsargasurabhirvavaughrāṇasukhō.nilaḥ ।।6.39.13।।


mahaujasām of extraordinary energy, tēṣām all of them, vānarāṇām the Vanaras, tatra then, praviśatām as they were entering, puṣpasaṅsargasurabhiḥ breeze redolent with the fragrance of flowers, ghrāṇasukhaḥ enjoying the fragrance, anilaḥ wind, vavau blew

Then the Vanaras of extraordinary energy, were enjoying the breeze redolent with the fragrance of flowers as they were entering, and the wind blew.
anyētuharivīrāṇāṅyūthānniṣkramyayūthapāḥ .

sugrīvēṇābhyanujñātālaṅkāṅjagmuḥpatākinīm ।।6.39.14।।


anyē others, yūthapāḥtu heroes too, harivīrāṇām monkey heroes, yūthāt troops, niṣkramya left, sugrīvēṇa to Sugriva, abhyanujñātāḥ permitted by, patākinīm decorated with flags, laṅkām Lanka, jagmuḥ went.

Some other monkey heroes permitted by Sugriva went to Lanka decorated with flags.
vitrāsayantōvihagāṅstrāsayantōmṛgadvipān .

kampayantaścatāṅlaṅkāṅnādaistēnadatāṅvarāḥ ।।6.39.15।।


nadatām capable of roaring, varāḥ best, vihagāṅ birds, vitrāsayantaḥ spreading, mṛgadvipān dispiriting the deer and elephants, nādaiḥ by the sound, tē they, laṅkām into Lanka, kampayantaśca terrifying.

Other monkeys capable of roaring went into Lanka, spreading out terrifying the birds, dispiriting the deer and elephants by noise.
kurvantastēmahāvēgāmahīṅcaraṇapīḍitām .

rajaścasahasaivōrthvaṅjagāmacaraṇōtthitam ।।6.39.16।।


mahāvēgāḥ capable of speed, tē they, mahīm great force, caraṇapīḍitām trampling down with feet, kurvantaḥ doing, caraṇōtthitam under feet, rajaśca dust, sahasaiva in a second, ūrthvam up to the sky, jagāma went/rose.

Those Vanaras endowed with speed went trampling down on the ground with force, the dust under their feet rose to the sky in a fraction of a second.
ṛkṣāssiṅhāvarāhāścamahiṣāvāraṇāmṛgāḥ .

tēnaśabdēnavitrastājagmurbhītādiśōdaśa ।।6.39.17।।


tēna by that, śabdēna sound, ṛkṣāḥ Bears, siṅhāvarāhaśca lions and pigs, mahiṣāḥ buffaloes, vāraṇāmṛgāḥ elephants, vitrastāḥ alarmed, bhītāḥ frightened, daśa ten, diśaḥ directions, jagmuḥ went.

Alarmed by that sound the Bears, lions, pigs, elephants, buffaloes were frightened and went in all the ten directions.
śikharaṅtattrikūṭasyaprāṅśucaikaṅdivispṛśam .

samantātpuṣpasaṅñchannaṅmahārajatasannibham ।।6.39.18।।

śatayōjanavistīrṇaṅvimalaṅcārudarśanam .

ślakṣṇaṅśrīmanmahacchaivaduṣprāpaṅśakunairapi ।।6.39.19।।

manasā.pidurārōhaṅkiṅpunaḥkarmaṇājanaiḥ .


samantāt all over, puṣpasañchannam covered with flowers, mahārajatasannibham sparkled with gold, śatayōjanavistīrṇam spread over a hundred yojanas, vimalam white/pure, cārudarśanam beautiful to look, ślakṣṇam smooth, śrīmat splendid, mahacchaiva sages, śakunairapi even for birds, duṣprāpam not possible to reach, janaiḥ people, manasāpi in thought, durārōham difficult to access, karmaṇā by physical action, kiṅpunaḥ why again, prāṅśu praise worthy, divispṛśam touching the sky, ēkam alone, trikūṭasyaśikharam peak of Trikuta.

Trikuta peak was fully covered with flowers, sparkled with gold, spread over a hundred yojanas, beautiful to look at, splendid and smooth. It is difficult even for birds to reach, for sages even in thought and difficult to access by any physical action. It is praiseworthy as if touching the sky alone.
niviṣṭātatraśikharēlaṅkārāvaṇapālitā ।।6.39.20।।

śatayōjanavistīrṇātriṅśadyōjanamāyatā .


tatra there, śikharē on top of the peak, rāvaṇapālitā ruled by Ravana, śatayōjanavistīrṇā a hundred yojanas in breadth, triṅśadyōjanam thirty yojanas, āyatā long, laṅkā Lanka, niviṣṭā experienced.

Lanka ruled by Ravana was a hundred yojanas in breadth and thirty yojanas in length was seen.
sāpurīgōpurairuccaiḥpāṇḍurāmbudasannibhaiḥ .

kāñcanēnacaśālēnarājatēnacaśōbhatē ।।6.39.21।।


sā that, purī city, uccaiḥ tall, pāṇḍurāmbudasannibhaiḥ like white cluster of clouds, gōpuraiḥ towers, kāñcanēna with gold, rājatēnaca and silver, śālēna fortified, śōbhatē charming.

The city of Lanka looked charming with tall towers resembling white cluster of clouds fortified with gold and silver.
prāsādaiścavimānaiścalaṅkāparamabhūṣitā .

ghanairivā.tapāpāyēmadhyamaṅvaiṣṇavaṅpadam ।।6.39.22।।


prāsādaiśca even the buildings, vimānaiśca resembled air planes, paramabhūṣitā decorated beautifully, laṅkā Lanka, ātapāpāpayē exposed to the sun, ghanaiḥ rainy clouds, madhyamam in the centre, vaiṣṇavaṅpadam iva resembling the abode of Vishnu.

The tall buildings decorated beautifully resembled air planes and were shining like heavy rainy clouds exposed to the sun. The building in the centre resembled the abode of Vishnu.
yasyāṅstambhasahasrēṇaprāsādassamalaṅkṛtaḥ .

kailāsaśikharākārōdṛśyatēkhamivōlalikhan ।।6.39.23।।

caityassarākṣasēndrasyababhūvapurabhūṣaṇam .

śatēnarakṣasāṅnityaṅyassamagrēṇarakṣyatē ।।6.39.24।।


yasyām in that city, yaḥ that which is, nityam always, rakṣasām protected, samagrēṇa fully, śatēna hundred, rakṣyatē graced, stambasahasrēṇa thousand pillars, samalaṅkaṅkṛtaḥ ornament, kailāsaśikharākāraḥ peak of mount Kailasa, prāsādaḥ palace, kham sky, ulalikhanniva as if scraping, dṛśyatē appeared, saḥ that, rākṣasēndrasya Rakshasa Lord's, purabhūṣaṇam ornament of city, babhūva looked.

In that city, which was always protected fully by a hundred Rakshasas, there was a palace with thousand pillars, which looked like peak of mount Kailas, and was as though it was scraping the sky and it as like an ornament of Lanka, the city of Rakshasa's Lord.
manōjñāṅkānanavatīṅparvatairupaśōbhitām .

nānādhātuvicitraiścaudyānairupaśōbhitām ।।6.39.25।।

nānāvihaṅgāsaṅghuṣṭāṅnānāmṛganiṣēvitām .

nānākusumasañchannāṅnānārākṣasasēvitām ।।6.39.26।।

tāṅsamṛddhāṅsamṛddhārdhāṅlakṣmīnānlakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ .

rāvaṇasyapurīṅrāmōdadarśasahavānaraiḥ ।।6.39.27।।


lakṣmīvān prosperous, lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ Lakshmana's brother, rāmaḥ Rama, manōjñām delightfully, kānanavatīm different kinds of forests, nānādhātuvicitraiḥ different kinds of minerals, parvataiḥ mountains, upaśōbhitām very charming, udyānaiḥ gardens, upaśōbhitām very delightful, nānāvihaṅgasaṅghuṣṭām variety of birds singing happily, nānāmṛganiṣēvitām frequented by different kinds of deer, nānākusumasañchannām endowed with different varieties of flowers, nānārākṣasasēvitām attended by many Rakshasas, samṛddhām blooming, samṛddhārthām prosperous, tām that city, purīm city, vānaraiḥsaha along with Vanaras, dadarśa saw.

Prosperous Rama, brother of Lakshmana along with Vanaras saw different kinds of forests, mountains filled with different kinds of minerals, delightful gardens endowed with different varieties of flowers, charming birds singing happily, frequented by a variety of deer, attended by Rakshasas. The city was blooming with prosperity.
tāṅmahāgṛhasambādhāṅdṛṣṭavālakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ .

nagarīmamaraprakhyōvismayaṅprāpyavīryavān ।।6.39.28।।


vīryavān valiant, lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ brother of Lakshmana, mahāgṛhasambādhām filled with great palaces, amaraprakhyaḥ distinct like Lord do Devatas, tām that, nagarīm city, dṛṣṭavā on seeing, vismayam wondered, prāpya became

Valiant brother of Lakshmana wondered seeing the city filled with great palaces, distinct like Lord Indra's city.
tāṅratnapūrṇāṅbahusaṅvidhānāṅprāsādamālābhiralaṅkṛtāṅca .

purīṅmahāyantrakavāṭamukhyāṅdadarśarāmōmahatābalēna ।।6.39.29।।


mahatā huge, balēna army, rāmaḥ Rama, ratnapūrṇam jewels/gems, bahusaṅvidhānām accompanied by Vanaras, prāsādamālābhiḥ garland s of buildings, alaṅkṛtāṅca adorned with, mahāyantrakavāṭamukhyām gates fitted with huge machines for war, mahatā large, balēna by army, tām that, purīm city, dadarśa saw.

Accompanied by huge Vanara army, Rama saw in the city of Lanka rows of buildings/palaces, adorned with gems, gates fitted with huge machines for war and large army of Ravana.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēēkōnacatvāriṅśassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the thirty ninth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
