[Rama sets to depart with the vanara army to the seashore.]

śrutvā hanumatō vākyaṅ yathāvadanupūrvaśaḥ .

tatō.bravīnmahātējā rāmassatyaparākramaḥ ।।6.4.1।।


mahātējāḥ glorious, satyaparākramaḥ one who has truthful valour, rāmaḥ Rama, hanumataḥ Hanuman, yathāvat that way, vākyam these words, anupūrvaśaḥ in the aforesaid manner, śrutvā having heard, tataḥ after that, abravīt spoke

Glorious Rama, of truthful valour, having heard Hanuman in the aforesaid manner, there after spoke (to Hanuman).
yāṅ nivēdayasē laṅkāṅ purīṅ bhīmasya rakṣasaḥ .

kṣipramēnāṅ mathiṣyāmi satyamētadbravīmi tē ।।6.4.2।।


bhīmasya fierce, rakṣasaḥ rakshasa, purīm of the city, yām you, laṅkām of Lanka, nivēdaya sē telling, ēnām that one, kṣipram immediately, mathiṣyāmi will destroy, ētat this , satyam true, tē to you, bravīmi I am telling

I will destroy immediately that Lanka of fierce rakshasa, you are telling. I am telling you, this is the truth.
asmin muhūrtē sugrīva ! prayāṇamabhirōcayē .

yuktō muhūrtō vijayaḥ prāptō madhyaṅ divākara ।।6.4.3।।


sugrīva Sugriva, asmin this , muhūrtē auspicious time, prayāṇam journey, abhirōcaya I desire, yuktaḥ opportune, vijayaḥ victory, muhūrtaḥ time, divākara Sun, madhyam middle position, prāptaḥ reached

I desire to journey at this opportune time. The Sun has reached the mid position and so a good time for victory.
sītāṅ hṛtvā tu mē jātu kvāsau yāsyati yāsyata: .

sītā śrutvābhiyānaṅ mē aśāmēṣyati jīvitē .

jīvitāntē. mṛtaṅ spṛṣṭavā pītvā viṣamivāturaḥ ।।6.4.4।।


mē I, sītām that Sita, hṛtvā abducted , yātu let that one, asau he who, yāsyataḥ gains, kva where, yāsyati can he go, sītā Sita,mē I, abhiyānam approaching, śrutvā on hearing, viṣam poison, pītvā after drinking, jātu sometimes, jīvitāntē at the end of life, (before death), amṛtam nectar of immortality, iva as if, jīvitē on life, āśām desire, yāsyata :attains

Where can the one who has abducted Sita go from here? Just as one who has drunk the poison gets some life sometimes on tasting the nectar of immortality, Sita will attain the desire to live on hearing about my approaching.
uttarā phalgunī hyadya śvastu hastēna yōkṣyatē .

abhiprāyāma sugrīva ! sarvānīkasamāvṛtāḥ ।।6.4.5।।


adya today, uttarā phalgunī hi Uttara Phalguni star is in ascent, śyastu for me (born in Punarvasu star) hastēna Hasta, yōkṣyatē will be in conjunction with moon, sugrīva Sugriva, sarvānīkasamāvṛtā collecting all the army, abhiprayāma my desire

Today Uttaraphalguni constellation is on the ascent and for me born in Punarvasu star, Hasta, will be in conjunction with the moon. Sugriva! You may assemble all the army as I desire to start the journey (as it is auspicious for me).
nimittāni ca paśyāmi yāni prādurbhavanti ca .

nihatya rāvaṇaṅ sītāmānayiṣyāmi jānakīm ।।6.4.6।।


yāni to proceed, prādurbhavanti manifesting, nimittāni omens, paśyāmi I see, rāvaṇam Ravana, nihatya on killing, jānakīm Janaka's daughter, sītām Sita, ānayiṣyāmi I shall get

I also see manifestations of good omens to start (the journey). I shall get Janaka's daughter Sita on killing Ravana.
upariṣṭāddhi nayanaṅ sphuramāṇamidaṅ mama .

vijayaṅ samanuprāptaṅ śaṅsatīva manōratham ।।6.4.7।।


upariṣṭāt upper lid of eye is twitching, sphuramāṇam strikes me, mama my, idam this, nayanam eyes, manōratham my desire, vijayam victory, samanuprāptam will be fulfilled, śaṅsatīva as if indicating

My upper eyelids are twitching thus indicating victory and it strikes me that my desire will be fulfilled.
tatō vānararājēna lakṣmaṇēna supūjitaḥ .

uvāca rāmō dharmātmā punarapyardhakōvidaḥ ।।6.4.8।।


tataḥ thereafter,vārarājēna by the king of vanaras, lakṣmaṇēna by Lakshmana, supūjitaḥ one who is respected, dharmātmā righteous one, ardhakōvidaḥ well-versed in polity, rāmaḥ Rama,punarapi once again,uvāca spoke

There after righteous Rama who is well respected by the king of vanaras and also by Lakshmana, who is well-versed in polity once again spoke.
agrē yātu balasyāsya nīlō mārgamavēkṣitum .

vṛtaśśatasahasrēṇa vānarāṇāṅ tarasvinām ।।6.4.9।।


nīlaḥ Nila, tarasvinām courageous, vānarāṇām vanaras, śatasahasrēṇa a hundred thousand, vṛtaḥ with, mārgam at the way,avēkṣitum looking, asya his balasya army,agrē forefront,yātu went

"Let Nila go leading in front with his courageous and hundred thousand army looking at the way (said Rama)".
phalamūlavatā nīla ! śītakānanavāriṇā .

pathā madhumatā cāśu sēnāṅ sēnāpatē ! naya ।।6.4.10।।


sēnāpatē O Chief of the army, nīla Nila, phalamūlavatā with abundance of fruits and roots, śītakānanavāriṇā shady forests with cool water, madhumatā with sweet smelling honey, pathā way, aśu you swiftly , sēnām army, naya leading

"O Nila, the chief of the army! Go fast with the army along the way which has plenty of fruits and roots, shady forests and cool water and sweet smelling honey".
dūṣayēyurdurātmanaḥ pathi mūlaphalōdakam .

rākṣasāḥ parirakṣēthāstēbhyastvaṅ nityamudyataḥ ।।6.4.11।।


durātmānaḥ evil minded, rākṣasāḥ rakshasa, pathi lord, mūlaphalōdakam roots fruits and water, dūṣayēyuḥ will spoil, tvam you, nityam ever, udyataḥ be alert, tēbhyaḥ from them, parirakṣēthāḥ protect

"Evil-minded one, the lord of rakshasas will spoil the roots, fruits and water (on the way). Be ever alert and protect them".
nimnēṣu vanadurgēṣu vanēṣu ca vanaukasaḥ .

abhiplutyābhipaśyēyuḥ parēṣāṅ nihitaṅ balam ।।6.4.12।।


vanaukasaḥ inhabitants of woods, vanaras, nimnēṣu in low lying lands, vanadurgēṣu in inaccessible water sources, vanēṣu ca and in forests, abhiplutya by leaping up to sky parēṣām beyond sight, nihitam placed, balam army, abhipaśyēyuḥ should even look for

"O Vanaras! You should even look for (the rakshasas) in the low lying lands, in inaccessible water sources, in forests and also beyond sight leaping up to the sky".
yacca phalgu balaṅ kiñcitta datraivōpapadyatām .

ētaddhi kṛtyaṅ ghōraṅ nō vikramēṇa prayujyatām ।।6.4.13।।


phalgu weak, yacca kiñcit little of that, balam strength, tat that, atraiva here itself, upapadyatām naḥ use it for the purpose here, ētat our this,kṛtyam task, ghōraṅ hi is a terrific one, vikramēṇa by power, prayujyatām prepared for

"If there are any weak ones in the army, they may be used here for this purpose (of looking for fruits etc.). Our task (ahead) is a terrific one and be prepared to overcome your power".
sāgaraughanibhaṅ bhīmamagrānīkaṅ mahābalāḥ .

kapisiṅhāḥ prakarṣastu śataśō.tha sahasraśaḥ ।।6.4.14।।


śataśaḥ hundred, atha this, sahasraśaḥ thousands, mahābalāḥ very powerful, kapisiṅhāḥ lions among vanaras, sāgaraughanibham like the tides of the ocean bhīmam fierce, agrānīkam leading, prakarṣantu would walk in groups.

"These hundreds and thousands of lion-like vanaras would walk in groups leading the army like the fierce tides of the ocean".
gajaśca girisaṅkāśō gavayaśca mahābalaḥ .

gavākṣaścāgratō yātu gavāṅ dṛptaivarṣabha: ।।6.4.15।।


girisaṅkāśaḥ one in the form of a mountain,gajaśca Gaja, mahābalaḥ mighty strong, gavayaśca Gavaya, gavākṣaśca and Gavaksha, dṛptaḥ proud, ṛṣabhaḥ bulls,gavām iva like the cows,agrataḥ that go in front, yātu would go

"Gaja who is like a mountain in form, Gavaya, the mighty strong and Gavaksha would go like proud bulls that lead the cows".
yātu vānaravāhinyā vānaraḥ plavatāṅ varaḥ .

pālayandakṣiṇaṅ pārśvamṛṣabhō vānararṣabhaḥ ।।6.4.16।।


plavatāṅ varaḥ foremost among the leaping animals, vānararṣabhāḥ bull among the vanaras, ṛṣabhaḥ vānaraḥ vanara called Rshaba, vānaravāhinyāḥ army of vanaras, dakṣiṇam right, pārśvam side, pālayan take charge, yātu may be

"Let the vanara called Rshaba the foremost among the leaping vanaras, take charge of the right side of the army".
gandhahastīva durdharṣastarasvī gandhamādanaḥ .

yātu vānaravāhinyā ssavyaṅ pārśvamadhiṣṭhitaḥ ।।6.4.17।।


gandhahastīva among the elephants in rut, durdharṣaḥ unassailable one, tarasvī powerful, gandhamādanaḥ Gandhamadana, vānaravāhinyāḥ the vanara army, vāmam left , pārśvam portion, adhiṣṭhitaḥ rule, yātu would do

"Let Gandhamadana, the unassailable and powerful vanara resembling the elephant in rut take charge of the left portion of the army".
yāsyāmi balamadhyē.haṅ balaughamabhiharṣayan .

adhiruhya hanūmanta mairāvata mivēśvaraḥ ।।6.4.18।।


aham I, īśvaraḥ lord of gods, airāvatamiva like the Iravatam, hanūmantam Hanuman, adhiruhya mounting on , balaugham for the army , abhiharṣayan encouraging, balamadhyē in the centre of the army, yāsyāmi would come

"Like the lord of gods riding on Iravatam I would mount on Hanuman and reach the centre of the army encouraging the army."
aṅgadēnaiṣa saṅyātu lakṣmaṇaścānta kōpamaḥ .

sārvabhaumēna bhūtēśō draviṇādhipatiryathā ।।6.4.19।।


antakōpamaḥ like Anthaka, ēṣaḥ in that way lakṣmaṇaśca Lakshmana also , bhūtēśaḥ lord of beings, draviṇādhipatiḥ lord of wealth, sārvabhaumēna yathā like Saarvabhauma(the elephant of Kubera), aṅgadēna on Angada, saṅyātu follow

"Let Lakshmana who is like Anthaka (one who excels death) ride on Angada, like the lord of wealth (Kubera) rides on the elephant Saarvabhauma (the elephant that guards the four quarters)".
jāmbavāṅśca suṣēṇaśca vēgadarśī ca vānaraḥ .

ṛkṣarājō mahāsattvaḥ kukṣiṅ rakṣantu tē trayaḥ ।।6.4.20।।


ṛkṣarājaḥ Rksharaja, mahāsattvaḥ mighty strong, jāmbavāṅśca even Jambavan, suṣēṇaśca and Sushena, vēgadarśi Vegadarsi, vānaraśca tē those vanaras, trayaḥ three, kukṣim rear side, rakṣantu protect

"Let Rksharaja the mighty strong Jambavan and Sushena even Vegadarsi protect the rear side (of the army)".
rāghavasya vacaśśrutvā sugrīvō vāhinīpatiḥ .

vyādidēśa mahāvīryō vānarānvānararṣabha ḥ ।।6.4.21।।


rāghavasya Raghava's, vacaḥ words, śrutvā having heard, vāhinīpatiḥ lord of vanaras, vānararṣabhaḥ bull among vanaras, mahāvīryaḥ highly heroic, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, vānarān to vanaras, vyādidēśa ordered

Sugriva the bull among vanaras having heard the words of Raghava ordered the heroic vanaras (to start).
tē vānaragaṇāssarvē samutpatya yuyutsavaḥ .

guhābhyaśśikharēbhyaśca aśu pupluvirē tadā ।।6.4.22।।


tadā then, yuyutsavaḥ who were eager to combat, sarvē all,tē of them, vānaragaṇāḥ vanara groups, samutpatya jumped down, guhābhyaḥ from the caves, śikharēbhyaśca from mountain peaks, āśu from trees, pupluvirē heroic monkeys

Then all the heroic monkeys who were eager for combat jumped down from the caves, mountain peaks and trees.
tatō vānararājēna lakṣmaṇēna ca pūjitaḥ .

jagāma rāmōdharmātmā sasainyō dakṣiṇāṅ diśam ।।6.4.23 ।।


tataḥ thereafter, vānararājēna by the king of vanaras, lakṣmaṇēna ca by Lakshmana, pūjitaḥ one who is worshipped, dharmātmā righteous, rāmaḥ Rama, sasainyaḥ along with the army, dakṣiṇāṅ diśam south direction, jagāma went

Thereafter righteous Rama who was worshipped by the king of vanaras and Lakshmana went towards the southern direction.
śataiḥ śatasahasraiśca kōṭibhiścāyutairapi .

vāraṇābhaiśca haribhiryayau parivṛtastadā ।।6.4.24।।


tadā then, vāraṇābhai protected by, śataiḥ hundreds, śatasahasraiḥ hundred thousands, kōṭibhiśca even crores, ayutairapi a myriad, haribhiḥ vanaras, parivṛtaḥ yayau surrounded by.

Protected by hundreds and thousands, even crores of vanaras and surrounded by a myriad of vanaras Rama went.
taṅ yāntamanuyāntī sā mahatī harivāhinī .

dṛptā: pramuditāssarvē sugrīvēṇābhipālitāḥ ।।6.4.25।।


mahatī great, sā that Rama, harivāhinī army of vanaras, yāntam while walking, tam them, anuyāntī followed, sugrīvēṇa by Sugriva, abhipālitāḥ controlled by, sarvē, dṛptā: all the vanaras, pramuditāḥ highly delighted

While Rama was walking the great army of vanaras controlled by Sugriva followed him with great delight.
āplavantaḥ plavantaśca garjantaśca plavaṅgamāḥ .

kṣēvaḷantō ninadantastē jagmurvai dakṣiṇāṅ diśam ।।6.4.26।।


tē those, plavaṅgamāḥ monkeys, plavantaḥ leaping, aplavantaḥ running, garjantaśca roaring like lions, kṣvēḷantaḥ playing, ninadanta:screaming, dakṣiṇāṅ diśam southerly direction, jagmuḥ vai they went

The monkeys went towards southern direction playing, leaping, running and roaring like lions.
bhakṣyanta ssugandhīni madhūni ca phalāni ca .

udvahantō mahāvṛkṣān mañjarīpuñjadhāriṇaḥ ।।6.4.27।।


sugandhīni sweet smelling, madhūni that honey, phalāni ca and fruits also bhakṣyantaḥ eating, mañjarīpuñjadhāriṇaḥ having bunches of blossoms, mahāvṛkṣān huge trees, udvahantaḥ carrying

The monkeys went eating sweet smelling honey and fruits and carrying branches of huge trees having bunches of blossoms.
anyōnyaṅ sahasā dṛptā nirvahānti kṣipanti ca .

patantaśpōtpatnatyanyē pātayantyaparē parān ।।6.4.28।।


dṛptāḥ wild ones, anyōnyam one another, nirvahanti carried, sahasā some, kṣipanti knocked down, anyē others, patantaḥ ca and fell down, utpatanti lifted, aparē another, parān turned the back, pātayanti pushed down

Some wild monkeys carried one another, while some fell, knocked down others, some lifted up and some turned their back and pushed down others.
rāvaṇō nō nihantavyassarvē ca rajanīcarāḥ .

iti garjanti harayō rāghavasya samīpataḥ ।।6.4.29।।


naḥ we, rāvaṇa Ravana, nihantavyaḥ should kill, sarvē all, rajanīcarāśca night roamers, rakshasas, iti thus , hārayaḥ vanaras, rāghavasya to Raghava, samīpataḥ close by, garjanti roaring

'We should kill all the rakshasas and Ravana', saying so the vanaras close by Rama were roaring.
purastādṛṣabhō vīrō nīla: kumuda ēva ca .

panthānaṅ śōdhayantisma vānarairbahubhi ssaha ।।6.4.30।।


ṛṣabhaḥ Rshaba, nīla Nila, vīraḥ heroic, kumuda ēva ca even Kumuda, bahubhiḥ many, vānaraiḥ vanaras purastāt together, panthānam on the way, śōdhayanti searching

Heroic Rshaba, Nila and even Kumuda together with many vanaras were searching on the way.
madhyē tu rājā sugrīvō rāmō lakṣmaṇa ēva ca .

balabhirbahubhi rbhīmairvṛtāśśatrunibarhaṇāḥ ।।6.4.31।।


madhyē in the middle,rājā king, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva,rāmaḥ Rama, lakṣmaṇa ēva ca and also Lakshmana, balibhiḥ powerful, bhīmaiḥ fierce, bahubhiḥ many vanaras, vṛtāḥ surrounded by, śatrunibarhaṇāḥ those who are capable of destroying the enemy

Sugriva, Rama and Lakshmana marched in the middle surrounded by powerful and fierce vanaras who can destroy the enemy.
hariśśatavalirvīraḥ kōṭībhirdaśabhirvṛtaḥ .

sarvāmēkō hyāvaṣṭabhya rarakṣa harivāhinīm ।।6.4.32।।


daśabhiḥ a hundred, kōṭībhiḥ crores, vṛtaḥ encircled around, vīraḥ heroes, śatavakaliḥ Sathavali, hariḥ vanara, ēkaḥ alone, sarvām all, harivāhinīm army of vanaras, avaṣṭabhya rarakṣa was protecting

Sathavali alone encircled by hundred crore vanara heroes was protecting the army of vanaras.
kōṭīśataparīvāraḥ kēsarī panasō gajaḥ .

arkaścātibala: pārśvamēkaṅ tasyābhirakṣati ।।6.4.33।।


kōṭīśataparīvāra one hundred crores, kēsarī Kesari, panasaḥ Panasa, gajaḥ Gaja, atibala: Atibala, arkaśca Arka and, tasya their army, ēkam one, pārśvam side, abhirakṣiti protecting.

Kesari, Panasa, Gaja, Atibala, Arka and their army of one hundred crores were protecting the army on one side.
suṣēṇō jāmbavāṅścaiva ṛkṣairbahubhirāvṛtau .

sugrīvaṅ purataḥ kṛtvā jaghanaṅ samrarakṣatuḥ ।।6.4.34।।


suṣēṇaḥ Sushena, jāmbavāṅścaiva and also Jambavan, bahubhiḥ and many, ṛkṣaiḥ Rsha's army, āvṛtāḥ surrounding, sugrīvam Sugriva, purataḥ western side, kṛtvā placing, jaghanam the army of vanaras, samrarakṣatuḥ guarding

Sushena, and Jambavan surrounded by the army of Rshaba were guarding by placing on the western side.
tēṣāṅ sēnāpatirvīrō nīlō vānarapuṅgavaḥ .

sampatanpatatāṅ śrēṣṭhastadbalaṅ paryapālayāt ।।6.4.35।।


tēṣāṅ their,sēnāpatiḥ chief of the army, vīraḥ heroic, vānarapuṅgavaḥ leader of the army,sampatan in flying, patan descending, śrēṣṭha: foremost , nīlaḥ Nila, tat that, balam army, paryapālayat controlled by going round

Nila, the heroic chief of the army who was foremost in the act of flying and descending was going around and controlling.
darīmukhaḥ prajaṅghaśca rambhō.tha rabhasaḥ kapiḥ .

sarvataśca yayurvīrāstvarayantaḥ plavaṅgamān ।।6.4.36।।


vīrāḥ valiant, darīmukhaḥ Darimukha, prajaṅghaśca and Prajhanga, rambhaḥ Rambha, atha and, kapiḥ vanara, rabhasaḥ Rabhasa, plavaṅgamān jumping tvarayantaḥ cheering, sarvataḥ all, yayuḥ went

Valiant Darimukha, Prajhanga, Rambha and Rabhasa went about jumping cheering all vanaras.
ēvaṅ tē hariśārdūlā gacchantō baladarpitāḥ .

apaśyaṅstē giriśrēṣṭhaṅ sahyaṅ drumālatāyutam ।।6.4.37।।

sarāṅsi ca supullāni taṭākāni vanāni ca ।।6.4.38।।


tē those, ēvam in that way, gacchantaḥ going, baladarpitāḥ who are proud of their might, tē they, hariśārdūlāḥ tigers among vanaras, drumālatāyutam with trees and creepers, giriśrēṣṭham foremost among the mountains, sahyam Sahya, supullāni fully blossomed lotuses, sarāṅsi lakes,vanāni ca and forests, taṭākāni ca and ponds, apaśyanta went seeing

Those vanaras who were tigers among vanaras, proud of their might went to see (on their way) the Sahya Mountains, the foremost of the mountains with trees and creepers, lakes and ponds with fully blossomed lotuses.
rāmasya śāsanaṅ jñātvā bhīmakōpasya bhītavat .

varjayannagarābhyāśāṅ stathā janapadānapi ।।6.4.39।।

sāgaraughanibhaṅ bhīmaṅ tadvānarabalaṅ mahat .

utsasarpa mahāghōṣaṅ bhīmaghōṣamivārṇava: ।।6.4.40।।


sāgaraughanibham expansive as the ocean, bhīmam dreadful, mahat great, tat that, vānarabalam vanara strength, bhīmakōpasya one whose wrath creates fear, rāmasya Rama's, śāsanam command, jñātvā knowing, bhītavat on account of fear, nagarābhyāśān parts of the city, tathā so also, janapada villages, varjayat avoiding, mahāghōṣam great sound, bhīmaghōṣam frightening sound, ārṇavam iva like the ocean, utsasarpa went on.

The dreadful vanara army expansive as the ocean went knowing about the fear of Rama's wrath. They went avoiding parts of cities and villages making frightening sounds like the great sound of the waves of the ocean.
tasyadāśarathē: pārśvē śūrāstē kapikuṅajarāḥ .

tōrṇamāpupluvu ssarvē sadaśvā iva cōditāḥ ।।6.4.41।।


śūrā: heroes, tē they are, sarvē all, kapikuṅajarāḥ best of monkeys, tasya his, dāśarathēḥ Dasaratha's son, pārśvē like horses, cōditāḥ that are driven sadaśvāḥ iva like steeds, tūrṇam swiftly, apupluvuḥ galloped

The heroic and best of the monkeys galloped swiftly on the command of Dasaratha's son like horses that are driven like the steeds.
kapibhyāmuhyamānau tau śuśubhātē nararṣabhau .

mahādbhyāmiva samspṛṣṭau grahābhyāṅ candrabhāskarau ।।6.4.42।।


kapibhyām both the monkeys, uhyamānau tau borne by the two, Hanuman and Angada, nararṣabhau best among men, Rama and Lakshmana, mahādbhyām planet Jupiter, grahābhyām planet Venus, samspṛṣṭau conjoined, candrabhāskarau Sun and Moon, iva like, śuśubhātē shining

When Rama and Lakshmana, the best among men were borne by Hanuman and Angada they were shining like the planets Jupiter and Venus conjoined with Sun and Moon.
tatō vānararājēna lakṣmaṇēna supūjitaḥ .

jagāma rāmō dharmātmā sasainyō dakṣiṇāṅ diśam ।।6.4.43।।


tataḥ then, vānararājēna by the king of vanaras, lakṣmaṇēna ca and by Lakshmana, pūjitaḥ worshipped, dharmātmā righteous, rāmaḥ Rama, sasainyaḥ that army, dakṣiṇāṅ diśam southern direction, jagāma went

Then righteous Rama who is worshipped by the king of vanaras and by Lakshmana went with the army towards the southern direction.
tamaṅgadagatō rāmaṅ lakṣmaṇaśśubhayā girā .

uvāca paripūrṇārtha: smṛtimān pratibhānavān ।।6.4.44।।


aṅgadagataḥ who was on Angada, smṛtimānpratibhānavān who has good memory and intuition, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, śubhāyā auspicious, girā spoke, taṅ rām to Rama, paripūrṇārtham fully set to accomplish, uvāca spoke.

Lakshmana, who was borne by Angada, has a good memory and sense of intuition. Set to accomplish his desire fully, he spoke to Rama these auspicious words.
hṛtāmavāpya vaidēhīṅ kṣipraṅ hatvā ca rāvaṇam .

samṛddhārthassamṛddhārthamayōdhyāṅ pratiyāsyasi ।।6.4.45।।


rāvaṇam that Ravana, kṣipram soon, hatvā on killing, hṛtām recovering, vaidēhīm Vaidehi, avāpya ca and attaining, samṛddhārthaḥ as an accomplished one, samṛddārthām having accomplished the objective , ayōdhyām to Ayodhya, pratiyāsyati would go

Rama! After killing Ravana and attaining the desired object of recovering Vaidehi you would go to Ayodhya having accomplished your objective.
mahānti ca nimittāni divi bhūmau ca rāghava ! .

śubhāni tava paśyāmi sarvāṇyēnārthasiddhayē .

anuvāti śivō vāyu ssēvāṅ mṛduhita ssukhaḥ ।।6.4.46।।


rāghava Raghava, divi sky, bhūmau ca and also land, mahānti great, nimittāni good signs, tava your, arthasirthayē the accomplishment of your desire, sarvāṇi all, śubhānyēna those auspicious ones, paśyāmi I am seeing, śivaḥ auspicious,mṛduhita favourable, sukhaḥ agreeable, vāyuḥ wind, sēnāmthe army, anuvāti is going

Raghava! I am seeing good signs in the sky and also on land indicating auspicious signs of the accomplishment of your desire. The wind is also favourable and agreeable to the moving army.
pūrṇavalgusvarāścēmē pravadanti mṛgadvijāḥ .

prasannāśca diśa ssarvā vimalaśca divākaraḥ ।।6.4.47।।


ētē these, mṛgadvijāḥ animals, pūrṇavalgusvarāḥ filled with sweet sounds, pravadanti making sounds, sarvāḥ all, diśaśca in all directions, prasannāḥ are pleasant, divākaraśca and Sun, vimalaḥ shining brightly

The sounds of these animals and birds are very sweet. The directions are pleasing, and the Sun is shining brightly.
uśanā ca prasannārciranu tvāṅ bhārgavō gataḥ ।।6.4.48।।

brahmarāśirviśuddhaśca śuddāśca paramarṣayaḥ .

arciṣmantaḥ prakāśantē dhruvaṅ sarvē pradakṣiṇam ।।6.4.49।।

Among the great kings of the Ikshvaku dynasty, the grandfather Trisanku who is a royal sage shines clearly along with Vasishta the foremost priest.

nairṛtaṅ nairṛtānāṅ ca nakṣatramabhipīḍyatē .

mūlō mūlavatā spṛṣṭō dhūpyatē dhūmakētunā ।।6.4.52।।


nairṛtānām called Niruta, nakṣatram star, nairṛtam in the South-west, abhipīḍyatē is highly tormented, mūlavatā by Mula star, dhūmakētunā by Dhoomaketu, spṛṣṭaḥ touched, mūlaḥ Mula, dhūpyatē oppressed

The star called Niruta (of rakshasas) in the south-west is highly tormented by the touch of the Mula star (close to it) and is oppressed.
sarvaṅ caitadvināśāya rākṣasānāmupa sthitam .

kālē kālagṛhītānāṅ nakṣatra grahapīḍitam ।।6.4.53।।


ētat all this, sarvam everything, rākṣasānām of rakshasas,vināśāya for destruction, upasthitam have sprung up, kālagṛhītānām caught up death, nakṣatram these stars, kālē death, grahapīḍitam are oppressed by the stars

Everything has sprung up for the destruction of rakshasas. Those that are caught up by death will be oppressed at the time of death.
prasannā ssurasāścāpō vanāni phalavanti ca .

pravāntyabhya nādhikaṅ gandhānyathartukusumā drumāḥ ।।6.4.54।।


āpaḥ water, prasannāḥ pure, surasāścaof good taste , vanāni forests, phalavanti ca filled with fruits, gandhāḥ fragrance, abhyadhikam excessively, na pravānti not blowing violently, drumāḥ trees, nyathartukusumāḥ in bloom exceeding the season

The water is pure and of good taste. The forests are filled with fruits. The wind with fragrance is not blowing excessively or violently. The trees are in bloom beyond season.
vyūḍhāni kapisainyāni prakāśantē.dhikaṅ prabhō ! ।।6.4.55।।

dēvānāmiva sainyāni saṅgrāmē tārakāmayē. ēvamārya ! .

samīkṣyaitānprītō bhavitumarhasi ।।6.4.56।।


prabhō O King, vyūḍhāni placed in order, kapisainyāni the army of vanaras, tārākāmayē in Taraka's, saṅgrāmē in the battle, dēvānām of devatas, sainyānīva like the army, adhikam very much, prakāśantē shining, ārya O king, ēvam in that way, ētān these, samīkṣya reviewing, prītaḥ pleased, bhavitum you be, arhasi ought to

O King! This army of vanaras placed in order is like the forces of gods in their battle with Taraka (a rakshasa who was killed in a battle by Karthikeya) and shines very much. O king, reviewing these (arrangements of army) you ought to be pleased (said Lakshmana to Rama).
iti bhrātaramāśvāsya hṛṣṭa ssaumitrirabravīt .

athāvṛtya mahīṅ kṛtsnāṅ jagāma mahatī camū: ।।6.4.57।।

ṛkṣavānaraśardūlairna khadaṅṣṭrāyudhairvutā .


rvutā: surrounded, hṛṣṭaḥ happy, saumitri Saumithri, bhrātaram at brother, āśvāsya reassured, iti thus, abravīt spoke, adha now, harivāhinī vanara forces , nakhadaṅṣṭrāyudhai who use their nails and teeth as weapons, ṛkṣavānaraśārdūlaiḥ tiger-like bears, kṛtsnām all over the land, mahīm expansive, āvṛtya spread, jagāma are proceeding.

Saumithri reassured his brother who was surrounded by the vanara force saying that those vanaras who use their nails and teeth as weapons and tiger-like bears spread all over the expansive land are proceeding.
kārāgraiścaraṇāgraiśca vānarai rutthitaṅ rajaḥ .

bhīmamantardadhē lōkaṅ nivārya savituḥ prabhām ।।6.4.58।।

parvatavanākāśāṅ dakṣiṇāṅ harivāhinī .

chādayantī yayau bhīmā dyāmivāmbudasantatiḥ ।।6.4.59।।


vānaraiḥ vanaras, karāgraiḥ with their hands, caraṇāgraiśca and with their feet, uddatam risen up, bhīmam terrible, rajaḥ dust, savituḥ Sun's, prabhām radiance, nivārya keeping off, saparvatavanākāśām with mountains and forests, lōkam all over the world, antardadhē concealing, bhīma harivāhinī fierce flow of vanara troops, ambudasantatīḥ as if spread upto sky, jyāmiva like the cord of a bow, dakṣiṇām southern, chādayantī, yayau alas

The terrible dust risen up by the (stamping) legs and hands of the vanara troops spread all over is keeping off Sun's radiance as if creating fear.Alas, the frightening army of vanaras went spreading all over the mountains and forests like the spread of clouds over the sky.
uttarantyāṅ ca sēnāyāṅ ssatataṅ bahuyōjanam .

nadīsrōtāṅsi sarvāṇi sasyandurviparītavat ।।6.4.60।।


satatam continuously, sēnāyām all the army, uttarantyam latter, nadīsrōtāṅ si the flow of water in the river, ca bahuyōjanam and several miles, viparītavat as if excessive flood like, sasyanduḥ flowed

When the army was continuously crossing the river, later (after they crossed) the water flowed excessively like flood.
sarāṅsi vimalāmbhāṅsi drumākīrṇāṅśca parvatā .

samān bhūmipradēśāṅśca vanāni phalavanti ca .

madhyēna ca samantācca tiryakcāthaśca samā.viśat ।।6.4.61।।


vimalāmbāṅsi pellucid water, sarāṅsi of the lakes, drumākīrṇān of many trees, parvatām mountains, samān plain, bhūmi land, pradēśāṅśca and in locations, phalavanti filled with fruits, vanāni ca and forests, sā that, madhyēna in the centre, samāntā t plain land, tiryak obliquely, athaśca underneath, sa aviśat plucking and eating

The vanaras went through the pellucid waters of the centre of the lakes. They went obliquely at the mountains, walked on plain lands and underneath trees filled with fruits, plucking them and eating.
samāvṛtya mahīṅ kṛtsnāṅ jagāma mahatī camūḥ .

tēhṛṣṭavadanā ssarvē jagmurmārutaraṅhasaḥ ।।6.4.62।।


mahatī great, camūḥ army, kṛtsnām all over the land, mahīm land, samāvṛtya spreading, jagāma went, mārutaraṅhasaḥ with the swiftness of wind, tē sarvē all of them, hṛṣṭavadanāḥ with cheerful face, jagmu went

The great vanara army spread all over the land went with the swiftness of wind with cheerful faces.
harayō rāghavasyārthē samārōpitavikramāḥ ।।6.4.63।।

harṣaṅvīrya balōdrēkāndarśayantaḥ parasparam .

yauvanōtsēkajāndarpādvividhāṅścakruradhvani ।।6.4.64।।


rāghavasvārthē for the purpose of Rama,samārōpitavikramāḥ showing their valour to each other, harayaḥ happiness,balōdrēkāt their prowess charged with emotion, harṣam joy, vīryam spirit, parasparam one to the other, darśayantaḥ exhibiting, adhvani on the way, yauvanōtsēkajāvat natural youthful enthusiasm, darpāt arrogance, vividhān several( gestures), cakruḥ went

For the purpose of Rama, the vanaras went showing their valour, happiness and prowess charged with emotion towards one another on the way. They showed their joy and spirit to one another exhibiting their natural youthful enthusiasm, arrogance and several other gestures.
tatra kēciddrutaṅ jagmurutpētuśca tathāparē .

kēcitkilakilāṅ cakrurvānarā vanagōcarāḥ ।।6.4.65।।


tatra being so, vanagōcarāḥ inhabitants of forests, vanaras, kēcit some, vānarāḥ vanaras, drutam swiftly , jagmu went, tathā so also, aparē others, utpētuśca jumped, kēcit some, kilakilām made sounds like 'kila kila', cakruḥ went

Being vanaras some went swiftly, some jumped, and some others made sound 'kila kila'(the usual sounds of monkeys) while they went.
prāspōṭayaṅśca pucchāni sannijagmu: padānyapi .

bhujāvanikṣipya śailāṅśca drumānanyē babhañjirē ।।6.4.66।।


pucchāni tails, prāspōṭayan hit the ground, padāni feet, sannijagmu: stamped on the ground, api and, anyē others, bhujān arms, vikṣipya crushed, śailāṅśca mountains, drumān trees, babhañjirē broken

Some hit their tails on the ground, some stamped their feet on the ground, some crushed the mountains with their arms and some broke the trees.
ārōhantaśca śṛṅgāṇi girīṇāṅ girigōcarāḥ .

mahānādānpramuñcanti kṣvēḷvāmanyē pracakrirē ।।6.4.67।।


girigōcarāḥ inhabitants of mountains, girīṇām of the mountains, śṛṅgāṇi on the peaks, ārōhantaśca climbing on top, mahā nādān loud noise, pramuñcanti snapping ,anyē others, kṣvēḷvām roared like lion, pracakrirē went round and round

Vanaras, being the inhabitants of mountains, climbed on peaks of mountains and made loud noises like snapping and roaring like lions. Some went round and round.
ūruvēgaiśca mamṛdurlatājālānyanēkaśaḥ .

jṛmbhamāṇāśca vikrāntā vicikrīḍuśśilādrumai ḥ ।।6.4.68।।


ūruvēgaiḥ with the speed of their thighs,anēkaśaḥ several, latājālāni meshes of creepers, mamṛduḥ broken, jṛmbamāṇā while yawning , vikrāntā courageous, śilādrumaiḥ stones and trees, vicikrīḍuḥ whirled round and played

With the speed of their shaking thighs, the vanaras broke several meshes of creepers. While yawning also some showed their courage by whirling round and throwing stones and trees.
śataśśatasahasraiśca kōṭibhiśca sahasraśaḥ .

vānarāṇāṅ sughōrāṇāṅ śrīmatparivṛtā mahī ।।6.4.69।।


śataḥ one hundred, mahī land, sughōrāṇām formidable, vānarāṇām vanaras, śatasahasraiśca hundred thousands, sahāsraśaḥ lakhs, kōṭibhiḥ and crores, śrīmat splendid, parivṛtā spread around

Formidable vanaras in hundreds, thousands, lakhs and crores spread in a splendid manner around the land.
sā sma yāti divārātraṅ mahatī harivāhinī .

prahṛṣṭamuditāssēnā sugrīvēṇābhipālitāḥ ।।6.4.70।।

vānarāstvaritaṅ yānti sarvē yuddhābhinandinaḥ .

pramōkṣayiṣava ssītāṅ muhūrtaṅ kvāpi nāvasan ।।6.4.71।।


mahatī mighty, sā harivāhinī that vanara force, divārātram day and night, yatī sma somehow we, sugrīvēṇa by Sugriva, abhipālitāḥ protected by, sarvē all sides, vānarāḥ vanaras, prahṛṣṭamuditāḥ delighted at heart, sarvē yuddhābhinandinaḥ happy about war , tvaritāḥ speedily, yānti sītām somehow that Sita, pramōkṣayiṣvaḥ to liberate, kvāpi nowhere, muhūrtam a short while, vāsan not stood

The mighty vanara force protected by Sugriva from all sides cheerful at heart, walked day and night speedily. Being eager to somehow liberate Sita they were happy about war and stood nowhere for a while.
tataḥ pādapasambhādhaṅ nānāmṛgasamāyutāma .

sahyaparvatamāsēdurmalayañca mahīdharam ।।6.4.72।।


tataḥ thereafter, tē mahīdharam that land, pādapasambādham dense with trees, nānāmṛgasamāvṛtam inhabited by different kinds of animals, malayañca Malaya and, sahyaparvatam Sahaya mountain, sēdu:boundary , āsādya having reached, samāyutām assembled

Thereafter having reached the dense forest filled with trees surrounded by the Malaya and Sahaya Mountain inhabited by different kinds of animals, the vanaras assembled.
kānanāni vicitrāṇi nadī: prasravaṇāni ca .

paśyannani yayau rāmassahyasya malayasya ca ।।6.4.73।।


rāmaḥ ni Rama also,sahyasya Sahaya's,ca and, vicitrāṇi wonderful, kānanāni woods, nadīprasravaṇāni ca streams of rivers, paśyan to see, yayau went

Rama too went to see the wonderful woods and streams of rivers of Sahaya mountain.
vakuḷānstilakāṅścūtānasōkān sindhuvārakān .

karavīrāṅśca tiniśān bhajanti sma plavaṅgagamāḥ ।।6.4.74।।


plavaṅgamāḥ leaping animals(vanaras), vakuḷān Vakula trees, tilakān Tilaka , cūtān asōkān Mango and Asoka, sindhuvārakān Sinduvara , tiniśān Tinisa, karavīrāṅśca Karaveera and, bhajanti sma adoring them

The vanaras went adoring the Vakula, Tilaka, Mango, Asoka, Tinisa, Sinduvara and Karaveera trees.
aṅkōlāṅśca karañcāṅśca plakṣanyagrōdhatindukān .

jambukāmalakānnāpānbhajanti sma plavaṅgamāḥ ।।6.4.75।।


plavaṅgamāḥ vanaras, aṅkōlān Ankola, karañcāṅśca Karanja and , plakṣanyagrōdhapādapān Plaksa and Nyagrodha, jambukāmalakān Jambu and Amla, nīpān Neepa, bhajanti sma adoring them

Vanaras went adoring the Ankola, Karanja, Plaksa, Nyagrodha, Jambu,Amla and neepa trees.
prastarēṣu ca ramyēṣu vividhāḥ kānanadrumāḥ .

vāyuvēgapracalitāḥ puṣpairavakiranti tān ।।6.4.76।।


ramyēṣu beautiful, prastarēṣu on rocks, vividhāḥ many kinds, kānanadrumāḥ forest trees, vāyuvēgapracalitāḥ shaken by the fury of winds, tān their, puṣpaiḥ flowers, avakiranti showered

Many kinds of trees standing on beautiful rocks and of the forest shaken by the fury of the wind showered their flowers on the vanaras.
mārutassukhasaṅsparśō vāti candanaśītalaḥ .

ṣaṭapadairanukūjadbhirvanēṣu madhugandhiṣu ।।6.4.77।।


madhugandhiṣu spreading sweet fragrance of honey,vanēṣu of the forest, anukūjadbhi: humming in delight,ṣaṭapadaiḥ bees, sukha saṅsparśaḥ by their cool touch,candanaśītalaḥ like the coolness of sandal, mārutaḥ breeze, vāti blowed

As the bees humming in delight were spreading the sweet fragrance of honey accompanied the breeze that blew, it was cool like the cool touch of sandal (to the vanaras).
adhikaṅ śailarājastu dhātubhissuvibhūṣitaḥ .

dhātubhyaḥprasṛtō rēṇurvāyuvēga vighaṭṭitaḥ .

sumahadvānarānīkaṅ chādayāmāsa sarvataḥ ।।6.4.78।।


śailarājastu lord of mountains, dhātu: minerals, adhikam richly, suvibhūṣitaḥ shone brightly, vāyuvēga speed of the wind, vighaṭṭitaḥ by the stamping(crushing), rēṇuḥ particles, dhātubhya: of minerals, prasṛtaḥ raised, sumahat huge, vānarānīkam vanara troops, sarvataḥ all over, chādayāmāsa covered

That lord of mountains richly adorned with minerals shone very brightly. The mineral particles raised by the stamping of the vanara troops covered the huge vanaras all over.

In the mountains were reservoirs of water and ponds with cool water inhabited by flocks of Chakravaka birds, water birds like ravens and Krauncha birds. The woodlands were terrific, frequented by boars, bears, hyenas, lions and frightening tigers and many kinds of wild elephants. With flowers in full bloom, the white, blue and red lotuses in the lakes were delightful.
tasya sānuṣu kūjanti nānādvijagaṇāstathā ।।6.4.88।।

snātvā pītvōdakānyatra jalē krīḍanti vānarāḥ .

anyōnyaṅ plāvayanti sma śailamāruhya vānarāḥ ।।6.4.89।।


tathā that way, tasya its, sānuṣu in the mountain ranges, nānādvijagaṇāḥ different kinds of flocks of birds, kūjanti singing , vānarāḥ vanaras, jalē in water, snātvā after taking a bath, udakāni the water, pītvā drinking, krīḍanti sporting, śailam mountain, aruhya climbing up, anyōnyam one over the other, plāvayanti sma jumping

At that time different kinds of flocks of birds were singing in the mountain ranges. The vanaras after having taken their bath were drinking and sporting with water with each other (pouring water over another) climbing up the mountain.
phalānya mṛtagandhīni mūlāni kusumāni ca .

babhañjurvāstatra pādapānaṅ madōtkaṭāḥ ।।6.4.90।।


tatra then, madōtkaṭāḥ one deluded with pride, vānarāḥ vanaras, pādapānām climbing trees, amṛtagandhīni of nectar like aroma, phalāni fruits, mūlāni roots, kusumāni ca and flowers, babhañjuḥ ate

Then the vanaras who were deluded with pride climbed the trees and ate the fruits with nectar like aroma, roots and flowers.
drōṇamātrapramāṇāni lambamānāni vānarāḥ .

yayuḥ pibanta hṛṣṭāstē madhūni madhupiṅgalāḥ ।।6.4.91।।


madhupiṅgalāḥ tawny-eyed, tē vānarāḥ those vanras, lambamānāni hanging, drōṇamātrapramāṇāni honey coombs of ten litres size, madhūni the honey of, pibantaḥ drinking, hṛṣṭā: joyfully, yayuḥ went

The tawny-eyed monkeys went joyfully drinking the honey from the large honeycombs hanging there.
pādapānavabhañjantō vikarṣanta stathā latāḥ .

vidhamantō girivarānprayayuḥ plavagarṣabhāḥ ।।6.4.92।।


pla vagarṣabhāḥ the best among the leaping ones, pādapān trees, avabhañjantaḥ smashing, tathā that way, latāḥ creepers, vikarṣantaḥ pulling out, girivarān best of mountains, vidhimantaḥ purposefully destroying, prayayuḥ went

The vanaras (who are best among leaping animals) went smashing the trees, pulling out the creepers and purposefully destroying the mountains (on their way).
vṛkṣēbhyō.nyē tu kapayō nadantō madhudarpitāḥ .

anyē vṛkṣānprapadyantē prapibantyapi cāparē ।।6.4.93।।


anyē others, kapayaḥ monkeys, madhudarpitāḥ intoxicated by drinking excessive honey, vṛkṣēbhyaḥ where the trees, nadantaḥ walking, anyē others, vṛkṣān the trees, prapadyantē climbed, aparē top, prapibanti jumped

While some monkeys that were intoxicated by drinking excessive honey walked where there were no trees, others climbed the tree tops and jumped.
babhūva vasudhā taistu sampūrṇā hariyūthapai: .

yathā kalamakēdāraiḥ pakvairiva vasundarā ।।6.4.94।।


taiḥ those, hariyūthapai: vanara heroes, sampūrṇa filled completely, vasundharā the land, pakvaiḥ fully ripe, kalamakēdārai like paddy field, vasundharā yathēva the land seemed, babhūva was seen

That land filled completely with the vanara heroes seemed like a fully ripe paddy field.
mahēndramatha samprāpya rāmō rājīvalōcanaḥ .

adhyārōhanmahābāhuśśikharaṅ drumabhūṣitam ।।6.4.95।।


atha and then, rājīvalōcanaḥ lotus-eyed , mahābāhuḥ of mighty shoulders, rāmaḥ Rama, mahēndram Mahendra mountain, samprāpya arriving at, drumabhūṣitam adorned with beautiful trees, śikharam top, adhyārōha climbed up

At that time Lotus-eyed Rama of mighty shoulders climbed up the the top of mountain Mahendra adorned with beautiful trees.
tataśśikharamāruhya rāmō daśarathātmajaḥ .

kūrmamīnasamākīrṇamapaśyatsalilākulam ।।6.4.96।।


tataḥ then, daśarathātmajaḥ Dasaratha's son, rāmaḥ Rama, śikharam top , āruhyā on climbing, kūrmāmīnasamākīrṇam inhabited by tortoises and fish, salilākulam ocean, apaśyat observed

Then Rama the son of Dasaratha on climbing to the top (of Mahendra mountain) observed the ocean inhabited by tortoises and fish.
tē sahyaṅ samatikramya malayaṅ ca mahāgirim .

āsēdurānupūrvyēṇa samudraṅ bhamanissvanam ।।6.4.97।।


tē they, sahyām Sahya mountain, mahāgirim great mountain, malayaṅ ca and Malaya mountain, samatikramya likewise, ānupūrvyēṇa crossing one after the other, bhīmanisvanam of frightening size, samudram ocean, āsēduḥ reached

The vanaras crossing over the great Sahya and Malaya mountains one after another reached near the frightening ocean.
avaruhya jagāmāśu vēlāvanamanuttamam .

rāmō ramayatāṅ śrēṣṭa ssasugrīva ssalakṣmaṇaḥ ।।6.4.98।।


sasugrīva along with Sugriva, salakṣmaṇaḥ with Lakshmana, ramayatām among those who cause delight, śrēṣṭaḥ best, rāmaḥ Rama, avaruhya got down, āśu soon, anuttamam best, vēlāvanam wood on the sea coast, jagāma went

Rama, who causes delight to others, got down (the mountain) along with Lakshmana and Sugriva and soon reached the wood on the sea coast.
atha dhautōpalatalāṅ tōyaughai ssahasōtthitaiḥ .

vēlāmāsādya vipulānrāmō vacanamabravīt ।।6.4.99।।


atha and from there, rāmaḥ Rama, sahasā atonce, utthitaiḥ sprung up, tōyaughaiḥ by waves, dhautō palatalām polished surface of the earth, vipulām extensive, vēlām soon, āsādya reaching, vacanam these words, abravīt spoke

Atonce Rama sprung from there (top of mountain) on to an extensive surface of the earth polished by the waves of the ocean spoke these words on reaching there.
ētē vayamanuprāptā ssugrīva varuṇālayam .

ihēdānīṅ vicintā sāyā naḥ pūrvasamutthitā ।।6.4.100।।


sugrīva Sugriva, ētē vayam that which we, varuṇālayam abode of Varuna, sea, samanuprāptāḥ have reached, yā that which, pūrvam earlier, sā that, vicintā idea, iha here, idānīm now, naḥ we, samutthitā have to think of

Sugriva! We have reached the ocean and now we have to think of that idea now, which we thought of earlier.
ataḥ paramatīrō.yaṅ sāgara ssaritāṅ patiḥ .

na cāyamanupāyēna śakyastaritumarṇavaḥ ।।6.4.101।।


saritāṅ patiḥ lord of the rivers,ocean, āyuṅ sāgaraḥ all ocean , ataḥ param and the shore, atīraḥ beyond this, āyam we, arṇavaḥ ocean, anupāyēna without any mode, taritum to cross, na śakyaḥ not possible.

There is only the ocean, the lord of rivers, and the shore is beyond this. We cannot cross the ocean without any mode.
tadihaiva nivēśō.stu mantraḥ prastūyatāmiha .

yathēdaṅ vānarabalaṅ paraṅ pāramavāpnuyāt ।।6.4.102।।


tat there, ihaiva here itself,nivēśaḥ land, astu will have to, idam this, vānarabalam army of vanaras, yathā that way, pāram other shore, avāpnuyāt getting there, mantraḥ deliberation, iha prastūyatām camp here

We will have to leave the army of vanaras here itself. We have to deliberate how to get the vanaras to the other shore.
itīva sa mahābāhussītāharaṇakarśitaḥ .

rāmassāgaramāsādya vāsamājñāpayattadā ।।6.4.103।।


mahābāhuḥ mighty-armed, sītāharaṇakarśitaḥ tormented by abduction of Sita, saḥ rāmaḥ that Rama, tadā this way, sāgaram at ocean, āsādya seeing, itīva in this way, vāsam quartering of, ājñāpayat ordered

On seeing the ocean, the mighty-armed Rama, tormented by the abduction of Sita in that way, ordered about the quartering of the vanaras.
sarvā ssēnā nivēśyantāṅ vēlāyāṅ haripuṅgava .

samprāptō mantrakālō nassāgarasyēha laṅghanē ।।6.4.104।।


haripuṅgavaḥ O Best among monkeys!, sarvāḥ for all, sēnāḥ the army, vēlāyām at the sea coast, nivēśyantām for arranging to reside, iha now, sāgarasya ocean's, laṅghanē to cross, naḥ for us, mantrakālaḥ time for deliberation, samprāptaḥ has set in

"O Best of monkeys! Now make preparation for all the army to reside at the sea coast. The time to deliberate about crossing the ocean has set in."
svāṅ svāṅ sēnāṅ samutsṛjya mā ca kaścitkutō vrajēt .

gacchantu vānarāśśūrājñēyaṅ channaṅ bhayaṅ ca naḥ ।।6.4.105।।


kaścit none, svāṅ svām their respective, sēnām army, samutsṛjya leaving, kutaḥ what so ever, mā vrajēt not to go, naḥ us, channam a parasol,bhayam dangerous, jñēyaṅ ca should be known, śūrāḥ warriors, vānarāḥ vanaras, gacchantu should keep guarding

"None of the army should go wherever leaving the parasol. The vanara warriors should keep guarding and you may know that it is dangerous".
rāmasya vacanaṅ śrutvā sugrīva ssahalakṣmaṇaḥ .

sēnāṅ nivēśayatatīrē sāgarasya drumāyutē ।।6.4.106।।


sahalakṣmaṇaḥ with Lakshmana, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, rāmasya Rama's, vacanam words, śrutvā having heard,sāgarasya of the ocean, drumāyutē filled with trees, tīrē shore, sēnām the army, nivēśayat to reside

Having heard Rama's words, Sugriva and Lakshmana made the army to reside on the sea shore filled with trees.
virarāja samīpasthaṅ sāgarasya tu tadbalam .

madhupāṇḍujala śraśīmān dvitīya iva sāgaraḥ ।।6.4.107।।


sāgarasya of the sea, samīpastham proximity, tat that, balam vast army, madhupāṇḍujalaḥ like tawny coloured water, śrīmān prosperous, dvitīyaḥ second, sāgaraḥ iva like sea, virarāja shone

That vast (sea of) army of monkeys in tawny colour (settled) at the proximity of the sea (that was white) seemed like a prosperous second sea in bright colour.
vēlāvanamupāgamya tatastē haripuṅgavāḥ .

niviṣṭāśca paraṅ pāraṅ kāṅkṣamāṇā mahōdadhēḥ ।।6.4.108।।


tataḥ then, tē they, haripuṅgavāḥ best of monkeys, vēlāvanamforest close to the sea , upāgamya having arrived, mahōdadhēḥ mighty ocean , paraṅ pāram the other side , kāṅkṣamāṇāḥ desiring to reach, niviṣṭāśca stood here and there

Then the heroic monkeys having arrived at the forest close to the ocean stood there desiring to reach the other shore.
tēṣāṅ niviśamānānāṅ sainyasannāhanissvanaḥ .

antardhāya mahānādamarṇavasya praśuśruvē ।।6.4.109।।


tēṣām by their, niviśamānānām quartering there, sainyasannāhanissvanaḥ by the assembly of the army, arṇavasya of the ocean, mahānādam great noise, antardhāya drowning, praśuśruvē that which was produced

The noise of the ocean was drowned by the great sound produced by the assembly of the army quartered there.
sā vānarāṇāṅ dhvajinī sugrīvēṇābhipālitā .

tridhā niviṣṭā mahatī rāmasyārthaparā.bhavat ।।6.4.110।।


trithā the three( army groups), niviṣṭā encamped, sugrīvēṇa by Sugriva, abhipālitā protected by, sā that, vānarāṇām army of vanaras, dhvajinī enthusiastic, rāmasya of Rama, arthaparā purpose, abhavat appeared

The three army groups of vanaras protected by Sugriva encamped for the purpose of Rama appeared enthusiastic.
sā mahārṇavamāsādya hṛṣṭā vānaravāhinī .

vāyuvēgasamādhūtaṅ paśyamānā mahārṇavam ।।6.4.111।।


sā those, harivāhinī mass of vanaras, mahārṇavam great ocean, āsādya having arrived at, vāyavēgasamādhūtam the ocean lashed by the fury of the wind, mahārṇavam great ocean, paśyamānā seeing, hṛṣṭā felt rejoiced.

Having arrived at the great ocean and seeing the ocean lashed by the fury of the wind the vanaras felt rejoiced.
dūrapāramasambādhaṅ rakṣōgaṇaniṣēvitam .

paśyantō varuṇāvāsaṅ niṣēdurhariyūthapāḥ ।।6.4.112।।


dūrapāram shores far away, asambādham not connected, rakṣōgaṇaniṣēvitam protected by rakshasa army, varuṇāvāsam abode of rain god, paśyantaḥ on seeing,hariyūthapāḥ vanara army, niṣēduḥ not obstructed (expansive)

On seeing the expansive ocean, the vanara army thought 'how to cross the abode of rain god whose shores are far away and not connected and is protected by rakshasas'?
caṇḍanakragrāhaṅ ghōraṅ kṣapādau divasakṣyē .

hasantamiva phēnaughairnṛtyantamiva cōrmibhiḥ ।।6.4.113।।


caṇḍanakragraham crocodiles which can catch any animal, ghōram terrific, divasakṣyē during at the end of the day, kṣapādau when night sets in , phēnaughaiḥ foamy waters, hasantamiva as if laughing, ūrmibhiḥ waves, nṛtyantamiva as if dancing

As the day was ending and night was setting in, the ocean filled with crocodiles which could catch any animal looked terrific and its waves seemed as if it were laughing and dancing.
candrōdayē samudbhūtaṅ praticandrasamākulam .

caṇḍānilamahāgrāhaiḥ kīrṇaṅ timitimiṅgilaiḥ ।।6.4.114।।


candrōdayē at the time of moon rise, samudbhūtam lofty rising, prati candrasamākulam with reflections of several images of moon, caṇḍānilamahāgrāhaiḥ huge dark swift crocodiles, timitimiṅgilaiḥ huge fish called Timingalam which swallows small fish(Timi), kīrṇam scattering

At the time of the moon rise, the lofty ocean inhabited by dark swift crocodiles, huge Timingala fish scattered in it was rising up with several images of moon reflected in its water.
dīptabhōgairivākīrṇaṅ bhujaṅgairvaruṇālayam .

avagāḍhaṅ mahāsattvairnānāśailasamākulam .

sudurgaṅ durgamārgaṅ tamagādha masurālayam ।।6.4.115।।


dīptabhōgairiva adored with the glowing hoods,bhujaṅgēḥ serpents, ākīrṇam filled with hordes, varuṇālayam abode of Varuna, mahāsattvai: huge snakes, avagāḍham under water, nānāśailasamākulam different kinds mountains, sudurgam very difficult, durgamārgam difficult path, agādham deep, masurālayam fathomless abode of rakshasas

Filled with serpents glowing with flaming gems on hoods, the abode of Varuna (was like underworld) with huge snakes and different mountains under water is a difficult path inaccessible and a fathomless abode of rakshasas (vanaras thought).
makarairnāgabhōgaiśca vigāḍhā vātalōlitāḥ .

utpētuśca nipētuśca pravṛddhā jalarāśayaḥ ।।6.4.116।।


makaraiḥ sea animals (like sharks and crocodiles), nāgabhōgaiśca swarmed with serpents, vigāḍhāḥ with force, vātalōlitāḥ stormy,pravṛddhāḥ rising, jalarāśayaḥ huge volumes of water, utpētuśca jumping, nipētuśca throwing up and down

Swarmed with sea animals like sharks and crocodiles and serpents were jumping with huge volumes of water rising and down with force by the stormy wind.
agnicūrṇamivāviddhaṅ bhāsvarāmbumahōragam .

surāriviṣayaṅ ghōraṅ pātāḷaviṣamaṅ sadā ।।6.4.117।।


aviddham penetrated, agnicūrṇamiva like sparks of fire, bhāsvarāmbumahōragamthe drops of water in the sea, sadā as though, surāriviṣayaṅ the domain of snakes, ghōram terrific, pātāḷaviṣamaṅ like the pataala (underworld)

The sea that was the domain of snakes was shining as though sparks of fire from the sky penetrated the drops of sea water.
sāgaraṅ cāmbaraprakhyamambaraṅ sāgarōpamam .

sāgaraṅ cāmbaraṅ cēti nirviśēṣa madṛśyata ।।6.4.118।।


sāgaram the ocean, ambaraprakhyam resembling the sky, ambaram sky, sāgarōpamam like the ocean, sāgaraṅ ca and the ocean, ambaraṅ cēti like the sky identical, nirviśēṣam not at all, adṛśyata not appeared

The ocean resembled the sky and the sky like the ocean were identical as no difference appeared.
sampṛktaṅ nabhasāpyambhassampṛktaṅ ca nabhō.mbhasā .

tādṛgrūpēca dṛśyatē tārāratnasamākulē ।।6.4.119।।


ambhaḥ water, nabhasā of the sky, sampṛktam close to each other, tārāratnasamākulē covered with stars and gems, tādṛgrūpē those two, dṛśyētē appeared

The ocean and the sky filled with gems and stars respectively appeared alike.
samutpatitamēghasya vīcimālākulasya ca .

viśēṣō na dvayōrāsītsāgarasyāmbarasya ca ।।6.4.120।।


samutpatitamēghasya the rising clouds, sāgarasya of the ocean, vīcimālākulasya the moving waves, ambarasya and that of sky, dvayōḥ both, viśēṣaḥ distinguishing between,nāsīt was not there

There was no distinction between the sky with rising clouds and the ocean with moving waves.
anyōnyairāhatā ssaktā ssasvanurbhīmanissvanāḥ .

ūrmayassindhurājasya mahābhērya ivāhavē ।।6.4.121।।


anyōnyaiḥ one to the other, saktāḥ striking each other, āhatāḥ beaten, bhīmanissanāḥ frightening sound, sindhurājasya the ocean's, ūrmayaḥ waves, havē challenging each other , mahābhērya iva like the blowing of horns of war, sasvanuḥ made noise

The waves of the ocean striking each other making frightening sounds like the blowing of war horns seemed as if challenging each other.
ratnaugha jalasannādaṅ viṣaktamiva vāyunā .

utpatantamiva kruddhaṅ yādōgaṇasamākulam ।।6.4.122।।

dadṛśustē mahōtsāha vātāhatajalāśayam .

anilōddhūtamākāśē pravalganta mamivōrmibhiḥ ।।6.4.123।।


mahōtsāha with great enthusiasm, tē they, ratnaughajalasannādam the sound of gems and water, vāyunā by the cause of the wind , viṣaktamiva concentrated, kruddhamiva as if infuriated , utpatantam rising up, yādōgaṇasamākulam the abode of animals filled with water, vātāhatajalāśayam the ocean, ākāśē of the sky, anilōddhūtam the vanaras, ūrmibhiḥ even the waves, pravalgantam talking, iva like, dadṛśuḥ appeared

The enthusiastic vanaras saw the sea inhabited by animals filled with gems and water concentrated in one place rising to the sky, as though infuriated. The rising of the waves (the noise) of the ocean by the cause of wind seemed as if they were talking about.
tatō vismayamāpannā harayō dadṛśurharayastadā .

bhrāntōrmijālasannādaṅ pralōlamiva sāgaram ।।6.4.124।।


tadā then, tatra there, harayaḥ vanaras, bhrāntōrmijālasannādam the noise of the rolling waves, pralōlamiva as if highly agitated, sāgaram ocean, vismayam wonderstruck, āpannāḥ distressed, dadṛśuḥ saw

The vanaras were wonder struck when they saw the ocean that was noisy with rolling waves as if it was highly agitated and distressed.
।।ityārṣē vālmīkīyē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē yuddhakāṇḍē caturthassargaḥ।।
This is the end of the fourth Sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
