Sloka & Translation

[Rama catches the sight of Ravana standing on top of the palace. Provoked by anger Sugriva springs from the top of the mountain to Ravana, fights with him and returns back successfully.]

tatōrāmassuvēlāgraṅyōjanadvayamaṇḍalam .

arurōhasasugrīvōhariyūdhapasamvṛtaḥ ।।6.40.1।।


tataḥ there upon, sasugrīvaḥ Sugriva, hariyūthapaḥ Vanara troop, samvṛtaḥ surrounded by, rāmaḥ Rama, yōjanadvayamaṇḍalam spread over yojanas, suvēlāgram Suvela peak, upārōhat ascended.

Rama accompanied by Vanara troop and Sugriva, ascended the peak of Suvela mountain spread over yojanas.
sthitvāmuhūrtaṅtatraivadiśōdaśavilōkayan .

trikūṭaśikharēramyēnirmitāṅviśvakarmaṇā ।।6.40.2।।

dadarśalaṅkāṅsunyastāṅramyakānanaśōbhitām .


muhūrtam for a short while, tatraiva there itself, sthitvā remaining, daśa ten, diśaḥ directions, vilōyan observing, ramyē charming, trikūṭaśikharē peak of Trikuta, viśvakarmaṇā by Vishwakarma, nirmitām constructed, sunyastām strongly, ramyakānanaśōbhitām with delightful groves, laṅkām Lanka, dadarśa saw.

Remaining there for a short while, Rama observed the view of Lanka in all directions. He saw Lanka built on the charming peak of Trikuta strongly by Vishwakarma, endowed with delightful groves.
tasyāṅgōpuraśṛṅgasthaṅrākṣasēndraṅdurāsadam ।।6.40.3।।

śvētacāmaraparyantaṅvijayacchatraśōbhitam .

raktacandanasaṅliptaṅratnābharaṇabhūṣitam ।।6.40.4।।

nīlajīmūtasaṅkāśaṅhēmasañchāditāmbaram .

airāvataviṣāṇāgrairutkṛṣṭakiṇavakṣasam ।।6.40.5।।

śaśalōhitarāgēṇasaṅvītaṅraktavāsasā .

sandhyātapēnasaṅvītaṅmēgharāśimivāmbarē ।।6.40.6।।


tasyām from that, gōpuraśṛṅgastham peak of the tower, durāsadam difficult to approach, śvētacāmaraparyantam fanned by white whisks on both sides, vijayacchatraśōbhitam graced with triumphal parasol, ratnacandanasaṅliptam decorated with red sandal paste, raktābharaṇabhūṣitam adorned in red coloured ornaments, nīlajīmūtasaṅkāśam resembling dark clouds, hēmasañchāditāmbaram attired in red embroidered with golden colour thread, viṣāṇāgraiḥ by the indentations made by the tusks of Airavata elephant of Indra earlier, utkṛṣṭakiṇavakṣasam with scars on chest, śaśalōhitarāgēṇa colour of hare's blood, raktavāsasā by the red coloured attire, saṅvītam sandhyātapēna covered like sun shine at sun set, sañchannam , ambarē sky, mēgharāśim iva mass of clouds, rākṣasēndram rakshasa king.

From there Rama saw on the peak of the tower the Rakshasa king, who is difficult to approach. He was fanned by white whisks on both sides, graced with triumphal parasol, decorated his body with red sandal paste, adorned in redcoloured ornaments, resembling dark clouds, attired in red like the hare's blood, embroidered with golden thread, with scars on his chest caused by indentations made by the tusks of Airavata the elephant of Indra, looked like a mass of cloud covered by sunshine at dusk.
paśyatāṅvānarēndrāṇāṅrāghavasyāpipaśyataḥ .

darśanādrākṣasēndrasyasugrīvassahasōtthitaḥ ।।6.40.7।।


sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, rākṣasēndrasya Rakshasa king, darśanāt sight of looking, vānarēndrāṇām by the king of Vanaras, paśyatām seeing, rāghavasyāpi at Raghava, paśyataḥ seeing, sahasā rashly, utthitaḥ got up.

Looking at the sight of Raghava seeing Rakshasa king, Sugriva the king of Vanaras got up instantly rashly.
krōdhavēgēnasaṅyuktassattvēnacabalēnaca .

acalāgrādathōtthāyapupluvēgōpurasthalē ।।6.40.8।।


krōthavēgēna provoked by anger, sattvēnaca courageous, balēnaca and strong, saṅyuktaḥ impetuous, atha then, acalāgrāt the top of the peak, utthāya rose up, gōpurasthalē peak of the tower, pupluvē flew.

Provoked by anger, courageous and strong Sugriva rose up impelled by impetuosity and flew to the peak of the tower.
sthitvāmuhūrtaṅsamprēkṣyanirbhayēnāntarātmanā .

tṛṇīkṛtyacatadrakṣassō.bravītparuṣaṅvacaḥ ।।6.40.9।।


saḥ he, muhūrtam for a moment, sthitvā stood, samprēkṣya looking at, nirbhayēna fearlessly, antarātmanā internally, tat that, rakṣaḥ ogre, tṛṇīkṛtyaḥ treating like a straw, paruṣam harsh, vacaḥ words, abravīt spoke.

For a moment he stood looking at the ogre fearlessly in his mind and treating him like straw spoke harsh words.
lōkanāthasyarāmasyasakhādāsō.smirākṣasa .

namayāmōkṣyasē.dyatvaṅpārthivēndrasyatējasā ।।6.40.10।।


rākṣasa Rakshasa, lōkanāthasya ruler of the world, rāmasya at Rama, sakhā friend, dāsaḥ servant, asmi I am, tvam your, adya his, pārthivēndrasya best of kings, tējasā power, mayā by me, namōkṣyasē will not leave you.

"O Rakshasa! I am a friend and servant of the king of kings, ruler of the world. By his power I will not leave you!", Sugriva said.
ityuktvāsahasōtpatyapupluvētasyacōpari .

ākṛṣyamukuṭaṅcitraṅpātayitvā.patadbhuvi ।।6.40.11।।


iti thus, uktvā having said, sahasā speedily, utpatya got up, tasya his, upari top, pupluvē flying, citram wonderful, mukuṭam diadem, ākṛṣya held, tat then, bhuvi on the ground, pātayitvā fell.

Having spoken thus, Sugriva got up speedily and flew to the top of the tower (here Ravana was located) held the diadem and pushed it on the ground.
samīkṣyatūrṇamāyāntamababhāṣēniśācaraḥ .

sugrīvastvaparōkṣam mēhīnagrīvōbhaviṣyasi ।।6.40.12।।


niśācaraḥ night ranger, tūrṇam quickly, āyāntam coming towards, tam him, samīkṣya observing, babhāṣē announced, tvam you, mē my, parōkṣam without being seen by me, sugrīvaḥ Sugriva, hīnagrīvaḥ without neck, bhaviṣyasi will make.

Observing Sugriva coming towards him, Ravana said, "When you were not seen by me you had a neck. I will make you neckless."
ityuktvōtthāyataṅkṣipraṅbāhubhyāmākṣipattalē .

kantuvattaṅsamutthāyabāhubhyāmākṣipaddhari ।।6.40.13।।


iti like that, uktvā said, utthāya getting up, bāhubhyām hand s, tam his, kṣipram instantly, talē head, ākṣipat dashed, saḥ he, hariḥ Vanara, kantuvat like a ball, samutthāya getting up, bāhubhyām with both hand s, ākṣipat pushed down

Telling like that that Ravana got up and threw Sugriva by his hand s to the ground. Then Sugriva getting up like a ball fallen pushed Ravana down.
parasparaṅsvēdavidagdhagātrauparasparaṅśōṇitadigdhadēhau .

parasparaṅlaśiṣṭaniruddhacēṣṭauparasparaṅśālmalikiṅśukauyadhā ।।6.40.14।।

muṣṭiprahāraiścatalaprahārairaratnighātaiścakarāgraghātaiḥ .

taucakraturyuddhamasahyarūpaṅmahābalaurākṣasavānarēndrau ।।6.40.15।।


parasparam one against the other, svēdadvigdhagātrau sweating all over the body, parasparam one against the other, śōṇitaraktadēhau bodies coloured red with blood, parasparam each one the other, laśiṣṭaniruddhacēṣṭau clinging to each other bodies interlocked stood motionless, parasparam one another, śālmalikiṅśukāniva like the red silkcotton trees, mahābalau strong, tau both, rākṣasavānarēndrau Rakshasa and Vanara kings, muṣṭiprahāraiśca fighting with their fists, talaprahāraiḥ slaps with palms, aratnighātaiḥca and blows of forearms, karāgraghātaiḥ hurting with nails, asahyarūpam yuddham unbearable forms of war, cakratuḥ carried out.

Sugriva and Ravana, their bodies sweating all over, bodies coloured red with blood looking like red silk cotton trees, their bodies clinging together interlocked with each other stood motionless. They were fighting with their fists, palms and blows of forearms, hurting each other with nails and carrying out unbearable forms of war.
kṛtvāniyuddhaṅbhṛśamugravēgaukālaṅcira, gōpuravēdimadhyē .

utkṣipyacōtkṣipyavinamyadēhaupādakramādgōpuravēdilagnau ।।6.40.16।।


bhṛśam violently, ugravēgrau with aggressive terrible combat, ciraṅkālam for long, gōpuravēdimadhyē in the middle of the flat portion of the tower, niyuddham , kṛtvā having done, dēhau body, utkṣipyautkṣipya throwing each other repeatedly, vinamya bending, pādakramāt by moving their feet in a direction, gōpuravēdilagnau stood on the tower.

Violently fighting like that aggressively for long, throwing each other down repeatedly, bending and moving their feet in a direction, stood on the fl at area of the peak in the middle portion.
anyōnyamāvidhyavēdilagnautaupētatussālanikhātamadhyē .

utpētaturbhūtalamaspṛśantausthitvāmuhūrtaṅtvabhiniśśvasantau ।।6.40.17।।

Squeezing their bodies of each other they dropped down between the boundary of the peak and the moat. They were gasping heavily for a moment and clung their body to each other jumping.
āliṅ gyacāliṅ gyacabāhuyōksraissaṅyōjayāmāsaturāhavētau .

samrambhaśikṣābalasamprayuktausaṅcēratussampratiyuddhamārgaiḥ ।।6.40.18।।

udyamyacānyōnyamadhikṣipantausañcakramātēbahuyuddhamārgē: .

vyāyāmaśikṣābalasamprayuktauklamaṅnataujagmaturāśuvīrau ।।6.40.20।।

bāhūttamairvāraṇavāraṇābhairnivārayantauvaravāraṇābhau .

cirēṇakālēnatusamprayuktausañcēraturmaṇḍalamārgamāśu ।।6.40.21।।


rvāraṇavāraṇābhai Sugriva and Ravana both, vāraṇavāraṇābhaiḥ resisting each other, bāhūttamaiḥ endowed with mighty arms, nivārayantau keeping away each other, cirēṇakālēna for long time, tu, samprayuktau engaged in combat, āśu swiftly, maṇḍalamārgam going round and round, saṅcēratuḥ remained moving.

Both Ravana and Sugriva endowed with mighty arms, were resisting each other, and keeping away one another engaging in comb at for a long time. They kept on moving, going around each other swiftly.
tauparasparamāsādyayattāvanyōnyasūdanē .

mārjārāvivabhakṣyārthē.vitasthātēmuhurmuhuḥ ।।6.40.22।।


anyōnyasūdanē intending to destroy each other, yattau approaching each other, tau both, parasparam one another, āsādya to kill, bhakṣyārthē for the sake of food, mārjārāviva like cats, muhurmuhuḥ again and again, avitasthātē falsely.

Both of them intent on destroying each other were approaching one another and now and then growling like cats for the sake of food.
maṇḍalānivicitrāṇisthānānivividhānica .

mūtrakāṇicitrāṇigatapratyāgatānica ।।6.40.23।।

tiracśīnagatānyēvatathāvakragatānica .

parimōkṣaṅprahārāṇāṅvarjanaṅparidhāvanam ।।6.40.24।।

abhidravaṇamāplāvamāvasthānaṅsavigraham .

parāvṛttamapāvṛttamapadrutamavaplutam ।।6.40.25।।

upanyastapamanyastaṅyuddhamārgaviśāradau .

tausañcēcēraturanyōnyaṅvānarēndraścarāvaṇaḥ ।।6.40.26।।

Both Vanara king and Ravana being learned in war craft, went around in circles like ox's urine, stood in different wonderful postures, moved forward and backward horizontally and obliquely to evade movements, hitting, and delivering each other, standing steadily motionless, striking, jumping, assaulting each other coming forward and going away, going backwards jumping from behind, holding hands and folding to resist exhibiting their skill in combat.

ārabdhumupasaṅpēdējñātvātaṅvānarādhipaḥ ।।6.40.27।।

utpapātatadākāśaṅjitakāśījitaklamaḥ .

rāvaṇaḥsthitaēvātraharirājēvavañcitaḥ ।।6.40.28।।

In the meantime, Ravana thought of exhibiting his superiority by jugglery and jumped to the sky. Knowing that Sugriva, the untiring Vanara king assumed the air of victor and rose up to the sky. Baffled Ravana stood thinking Sugriva would come there.
athaharivaranāthaḥprāpyasaṅgrāmakīrtiṅniśicarapatimājauyōjayitvāśramēṇa .

gaganamativiśālaṅlaṅghayitvārkasūnurharigaṇamadhyērāmapārśvaṅjagāma ।।6.40.29।।

Then Sugriva, the Sun god's son, the Lord of Vanara chiefs, who had won fame of winning in battles, victorious exhausting Ravana in comb at flying the extensive sky reached Rama who was amid Vanara army.
itisasavitṛsūnustatratatkarmakṛtvāpavanagatiranīkaṅprāviśatsasamprahṛṣṭaḥ .

raghuvaranṛpasūnōdvardhayanyuddhaharṣaṅtarumṛgagaṇamukhyaiḥpūjyamānōharīndraḥ ।।6.40.30।।


savitṛsūnuḥ son of Sun god, saḥ that Sugriva, tatra there, tat karma that feat, kṛtvā having done, raghuvaranṛpasūnōḥ foremost of the Raghu's, yuddhaharṣam the joy of combat, vardhayan increasing, tarumṛgagaṇamukhyaiḥ adored by the foremost monkey chiefs, pūjyamānaḥ adored, samprahṛṣṭaḥ rejoiced, pavanagatiḥ wind speed, anīkam now, prāviśat entered.

Sugriva the son of the Sun god, having completed the feat, rejoiced by increasing the joy of foremost of Raghus. Then he who is adored by the monkey chiefs entered the army of Vanaras.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēcatvāriṅśassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the fortieth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
