Sloka & Translation

[Lanka is laid siege by the Vanara army. Ravana beholds the army of vanaras from the top of his palace. Rama and Lakshman take position of the Northern gate of Lanka. Ravana mobilizes his army and severe conflict takes place between Rakshasas and Vanara army.]

tatastērākṣasāstatragatvārāvaṇamandiram .

nyavēdayanpurīṅruddhāṅrāmēṇasahavānaraiḥ ।।6.42.1।।


tata then, rākṣasā Rakshasas, statra there, rāvaṇamandiram Ravana's abode, gatvā proceeding to, rāmēṇa Rama's, vānaraiḥ Vanaras, saha along with, ruddhāṅ occupied, nyavēdaya informed, npurīṅ total city.

Then the Rakshasas proceeding to Ravana's abode informed that Rama along with the vanaras have occupied the whole of Lanka.
ruddhāṅtunagarīṅśrutvājātakrōdhōniśācaraḥ .

vidhānaṅdviguṇaṅśrutvāprāsādaṅsō.dhyarōhata ।।6.42.2।।


ruddhāṅ occupied, tu also, nagarīṅ city, śrutvā hearing, jātakrōdhō very furious, niśācaraḥ night ranger, vidhānaṅ knowing, dviguṇaṅ twice, śrutvā hearing, prāsādaṅ top of the mansion, adhyarōhata planning for the protection of Lanka.

On knowing that Lanka is occupied, the night ranger Ravana, became very furious and doubled the forces of Lanka for the protection and went to the top of Lanka palace.
sadadarśāvṛtāṅlaṅkāṅsaśailavanakānanām .

asaṅkhyēyairharigaṇaiḥsarvatōyuddhakāṅkṣibhiḥ ।।6.42.3।।


sa: he, yuddhakāṅkṣibhiḥ desirous of combat, asaṅkhyēyai countless numbers, harrigaṇaiḥ troops of Vanaras, saśailavanakānanām mountains and forests, sarvatō all over, avṛtāṅ occupied, laṅkāṅ Lanka, dadarśā observed.

He observed a countless number of Vanara troops spread all over Lanka, mountains, and forests.
sadṛṣṭvāvānaraiḥsarvāṅvasudhāṅkavalīkṛtām .

kathaṅkṣapayitavyāḥsyuriticintāparō.bhavat ।।6.42.4।।


sa: he, vānaraiḥ Vanaras, sarvāṅ all, vasudhāṅ earth, kavalīkṛtām occupied, dṛṣṭvā seeing, kathaṅ how, syuriti thought, kṣapayitavyāḥ to destroy, cintāparō thinking, abhavat started.

Seeing the Vanaras occupying the entire earth, Ravana thought of destroying and started thinking.
sacintayitvāsuciraṅdhairyamālambyarāvaṇaḥ .

rāghavaṅhariyūthāṅścadadarśāyatalōcanaḥ ।।6.42.5।।


sa: he, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, suciraṅ for long, cintayitvā thinking over, dhairyamālambya picking up courage, ayatalōcanaḥ with thoughtful eyes, rāghavaṅ Raghava, hariyūthāṅśca at the Vanaras, dadarśā saw.

Ravana, thinking over for long, picking up courage, saw Rama's Vanaras with thoughtful eyes.
rāghavaḥsahasainyēnamuditōnāmapupluvē .

laṅkāṅdadarśaguptāṅvaisarvatōrākṣasairvṛtām ।।6.42.6।।


rāghavaḥ Raghava, muditō happily, sahasainyēna with army, pupluvē near, laṅkāṅ Lanka, sarvatō all over, rākṣasairvṛtām fully filled with Rakshasas, guptāṅvai protected, laṅkāṅ Lanka, dadarśa witnessed.

Raghava accompanied by the army happily went near and witnessed Lanka filled with Rakshasas all over.
dṛṣṭvādāśarathirlaṅkāṅcitradhvajapatākinīm .

jagāmasahasāsītāṅdūyamānēnacētasā ।।6.42.7।।


dāśarathi son of Dasaratha, citradhvajapatākinīm decorated with flags and posts, laṅkāṅ Lanka, cētasā thinking, sītāṅ of Sita, dūyamānēna worried, sahasā very much, jagāma remained.

atrasāmṛgaśāvākṣīmatkṛtējanakātmajā .

pīḍyatēśōkasantaptākṛśāsthaṇḍilaśāyinī ।।6.42.8।।


atra here, sā she, mṛgaśāvākṣī dove eyed, janakātmajā Janaka's daughter, pīḍyatē tormented, matkṛtē because of me, śōkasantaptā immersed in sorrow, kṛśā emaciated, sthaṇḍilaśāyinī without food struggling.

"Here (Lanka) is the daughter of Janaka, immersed in sorrow because of me, tormented and emaciated without food and struggling."
pīḍyamānāṅsadharmātmāvaidēhīmanucintayan .

kṣipramājñāpayāmāsavānarāndviṣatāṅvadhē ।।6.42.9।।


dharmātmā righteous, sa: he (Rama), pīḍyamānāṅ pained, vaidēhīma Vaidehi, acintayan thinking of very much, kṣipramājñāpayāmāsa immediately ordered, vānarān Vanaras, dviṣatāṅ enemies, vadhē to kill.

Thinking of Vaidehi again and again, who is pained, Rama ordered the Vanaras to kill the enemies immediately.
ēvamuktētuvacanērāmēṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā .

saṅgharṣamāṇāḥplavagāḥsimhanādairanādayan ।।6.42.10।।


kliṣṭakarmaṇā one who does not cause sorrow, ēvamuktē having ordered that way tu, vacanē his words, plavagāḥ monkeys, saṅgharṣamāṇāḥ getting ready for war, simhanādairanādayan roared like a lion

Ordered in that way by Rama, who does not cause sorrow, the monkeys roared like lions getting ready for war on hearing Rama's words.
śikharairvikirāmaināṅlaṅkāṅmuṣṭibhirēvavā .

itismadadhirēsarvēmanāṅsihariyūthapāḥ ।।6.42.11।।


hariyūthapāḥ Vanara troops, laṅkāṅ Lanka, śikharairvikirāmaināṅ with mountain peaks, muṣṭibhirēvavā or with fists, iti this, smadadhirē will crush, sarvē all, manāṅsi thought.

The monkey troops thought of crushing Lanka with their fists and mountain peaks.
udyamyagiriśṛṅgāṇiśikharāṇimahāntica .

tarūṅścōtpāṭyavividhāṅstiṣṭhantihariyūthapāḥ ।।6.42.12।।


hariyūthapāḥ Vanara leaders, giriśṛṅgāṇi mountains, śikharāṇi peaks, tarūṅścōtpāṭya holding trees, mahāntica huge, vividhāṅ many kinds, stiṣṭhanti ready to fight.

Holding the mountain peaks, huge trees of many kinds, the Vanara leaders stood ready to fight.
prēkṣatōrākṣasēndrasyatānyanīkānibhāgaśaḥ .

rāghavapriyakāmārthaṅlaṅkāmāruruhustadā ।।6.42.13।।


rākṣasēndrasya king of Rakshasas, prēkṣatō as he was looking, tānyanīkāni all the Vanara army, rāghavapriyakāmārthaṅ to make Rama happy, bhāgaśaḥ in divisions, laṅkāma Lanka, āruruhustadā ascended the boundary.

tēdrumaiḥparvatāgraiścamuṣṭibhiścaplavaṅgamāḥ .

prākārāgrāṇyaraṇyānimamanthustōraṇānica ।।6.42.15।।


tē they (Vanaras ), drumaiḥ trees, parvatāgraiśca peaks of mountains, muṣṭibhiśca even with fists, plavaṅgamāḥ monkeys, prākārāgrā top of boundary, araṇyāni forests, mamanthustōraṇānica gateways of the city

With the means of mountain peaks, as well as their fists, the Vanaras scaled the boundary walls and gateways of the city.
pārikhāḥpūrayantismaprasannasalilāyutāḥ .

pāṅsubhiḥparvatāgraiścatṛṇaiḥkāṣṭhaiścavānarāḥ ।।6.42.16 ।।

vānarāḥ Vanaras, pārikhāḥ with soil, parvatāgraiśca with mountain peaks, tṛṇaiḥ with grass, kāṣṭhaiśca wooden pieces, pāṅsubhiḥ moats also, prasannasalilāyutāḥ with pure water, pūrayanti filled.

The Vanaras started filling the moats with soil, pure water, logs of wood, grass, and mountain peaks.

kōṭīśatayutāścānyēlaṅkāmāruruhustadā ।।6.42.17।।


tataḥ then, vānarāḥ Vanaras, sahasrayūthāśca thousand, kōṭīyūthāśca one crore, kōṭīśatayutāścānyē hundred crores, laṅkāma into Lanka, āruruhustadā ascended then.

kāñcanānipramṛdnantastōraṇāniplavaṅgamāḥ .

kailāsaśikharābhānigōpurāṇipramathyaca ।।6.42.18।।


kāñcanāni golden, pramṛdnantastōraṇāni breaking the gateways, kailāsaśikharābhāni like the peaks of Kailasa mountain, gōpurāṇi towers, pramathyaca crushing, plavaṅgamāḥ monkeys went.

The Vanaras started breaking the golden gateways and crushing them which were like peaks of Kailasa mountain.
āplavantaḥplavantaścagarjantaścaplavaṅgamāḥ .

laṅkāṅtāmabhidhāvantimahāvāraṇasaṅnibhāḥ ।।6.42.19।।


āplavantaḥ jumping here and there, mahāvāraṇasaṅnibhāḥ like huge elephants, plavantaśca Vanaras, garjantaśca roaring like lion, laṅkāṅtāmabhidhāvanti went up to Lanka.

Jumping here and there like huge elephants, the Vanaras roaring like lions went into Lanka.
jayatyatibalōrāmōlakṣmaṇaścamahābalaḥ .

rājājayatisugrīvōrāghavēṇābhipālitaḥ ।।6.42.20।।


jayatya victorious, atibalō exceedingly strong, rāmō Rama, mahābalaḥ endowed with supreme, strength, lakṣmaṇaśca Lakshmana also, rājā king, jayati victorious, sugrīvō Sugriva, rāghavēṇa by Raghava, abhipālitaḥ protected by on all sides.

"Victorious is Sri Rama, who is exceedingly strong and Lakshmana who is endowed with supreme strength. Victorious is Sugriva the king of Vanaras who is protected by Raghava on all sides."
ityēvaṅghōṣayantaścagarjantaścaplavaṅgamāḥ .

abhyadhāvantalaṅkāyāḥprākāraṅkāmarūpiṇaḥ ।।6.42.21।।


kāmarūpiṇaḥ who could change their form at will, ityēvaṅ in this manner, ghōṣayantaśca shouting, garjantaśca roaring, laṅkāyāḥ into Lanka, prākāraṅ defensive walls, abhyadhāvanta rushed over.

rākṣasānāṅ Rakshasas, sughōrāṇāṅ terrific sounds, śatasahasraśaḥ hundred thousand, mahāghōṣāḥ loud noise, śaṅkhāḥ with conchs, vinēduśca sonorous, mukhamāruta with wind from their mouth, pūritāḥ blown.

malayaḥpūritōyēnasasānuprasthakandaraḥ ।।6.42.38।।


tatō thereafter, vānarasainyēna by the Vanara army, muktō emitted, nādaḥ sound, samantataḥ on all sides, pūritō filled, malayaḥ Malaya mountain, yēna by that, sa that, sānuprasthakandaraḥ major and minor peaks and caves.

Thereafter the Vanara army emitted a sound that filled all sides of Malaya Mountain, its major and minor caves.
śaṅkhadundubhisaṅghuṣṭaḥsimhanādastarasvinām .

pṛthivīṅcāntarikṣaṅcasāgaraṅcaivanādayan ।।6.42.39।।


śaṅkhadundubhisaṅghuṣṭaḥ blast of conchs and roll of drums, simhanāda roar of lions, starasvinām and of Vanara and Rakshasa heroes, pṛthivīṅ earth, cāntarikṣaṅca to sky, sāgaraṅcaiva up to ocean, nādayan resounded.

By the blast of conchs and roll of drums, and roar of lions of Vanara and Rakshasa forces it resounded all over the earth, sky and up to the ocean.
gajānāṅbṛṅhitaiḥsārdhaṅhayānāṅhēṣitairapi .

rathānāṅnēmighōṣaiścarakṣasāmvadanasvanaḥ ।।6.42.40 ।।

gajānāṅ of elephants, bṛṅhitaiḥ trumpeting, sārdhaṅhayānāṅ neighing of horses, hēṣitairapi clatter of wheels, rathānāṅ of chariots, nēmighōṣaiśca shout of, rakṣasām, Rakshasas, vadanasvanaḥ resounded in the air.

The trumpeting of the elephants, the neighing of horses, the clatter of the wheels of the chariots and the shout of Rakshasas resounded in the air.
ētasminnantarēghōraḥsaṅgrāmaḥsamavartata .

rakṣasāṅvānarāṇāṅcayathādēvāsurēpurā ।।6.42.41।।

"May the vanara king,triumphant Sugriva be victorious", thus sounded the cry of vanaras in the battlefield.
tathāvṛkṣairmahākāyāḥparvatāgraiścavānarāḥ .

nijaghnustānirakṣāṅsinakhairdantaiścavēgitāḥ ।।6.42.44।।


tathā in the same manner, vṛkṣairmahākāyāḥ with trees, parvatāgraiśca with mountain peaks, vānarāḥ Vanaras, rakṣāṅsi at Rakshasas, nakhairdantaiśca with nails and teeth, nijaghnustāni attacked, vēgitāḥ swiftly.

Vanaras in the same manner attacked the Rakshasas, with trees and mountains, swiftly and with their nails and teeth.
rākṣasāstvaparēbhīmāḥprākārasthāmahīgatān .

bhindipālaiścakhaḍgaiścaśūlaiścaivavyadārayan ।।6.42.45।।


rākṣasāstvaparē redoubtable Rakshasas, prākārasthā standing on the walls, bhīmāḥ dreadful, bhindipālaiśca Bhindipalas (javelin like weapons), khaḍgaiśca and swords, śūlaiścaiva with tridents, vyadārayan pierced.

Standing on the walls, the redoubtable Rakshasas, pierced the Vanaras with swords, dreadful Bhindipalas.
vānarāścāpisaṅkruddhāḥprākārasthānmahīgatāḥ .

rākṣasānpātayāmāsuḥsamāplutyaplavaṅgamāḥ ।।6.42.46।।


prākārasthānmahīgatāḥ stationed on the boundary walls, vānarāścāpi Vanaras also, rākṣasānpātayāmāsuḥ dragged down the Rakshasas, plavaṅgamāḥ monkeys, samāplutya jumping up.

The vanaras jumping up dragged the Rakshasas stationed on the boundary wall down to the ground.
sasamprahārastumulōmāṅsaśōṇitakardamaḥ .

rakṣasāṅvānarāṇāṅcasambabhūvādbhutōpamāḥ।।6.42.47।।


sa that, samprahāra conflict, rakṣasāṅ of Rakshasas, vānarāṇāṅca and Vanaras, tamulō intense, māṅsa flesh, śōṇita blood, kardamaḥ like mire, sambabhūvā that happened, adbhutōpamāḥ was amazing.

The conflict that happened between the Rakshasas and Vanaras was amazing and intense and left a mire of flesh and blood.
