Sloka & Translation

[In the fierce fight that took place in the night Indrajith gets vanquished by Angada. Sri Rama and Lakshmana also put up a great fight and eventually get bound by a noose of serpents.]

yudhyatāmēnatēṣāṅtutadāvānararākṣasām .

ravirastaṅgatōrātriḥpravṛttāprāṇahāriṇī ।।6.44.1।।


tēṣām their, vānararakṣasām Vanara and Rakshasa, yudhyatāmēva battling, tadā then, raviḥ sun, astam set, gataḥ went, prāṇahāriṇī harmful to the life, rātriḥ night, pravṛttā began.

Thus, as the Vanaras and Rakshasas were battling, the Sun began to set, which is not favourable to the life of Vanaras.
anyōnyaṅbaddhavairāṇāṅghōrāṇāṅjayamicchatām .

sampravṛttaṅniśāyuddhaṅtadāvānararakṣasām ।।6.44.2।।


tadā then, anyōnyam to one another, baddhavairāṇām strong enmity, ghōrāṇām dreadful, jayam victory, icchatām wishing, vānararakṣasām Vanara and Rakshasas, niśāyuddham night battle, sampravṛttam started.

Then Vanaras and dreadful Rakshasas being strongly inimical to each other started the night battle wishing victory.
rākṣasō.sītiharayōhariścā.sītirākṣasāḥ .

anyōnyaṅsamarējaghnustasmiṅstamasidāruṇē ।।6.44.3।।


dāruṇē fierce, tasmin them, tamasi darkness, rākṣasaḥasi thinking to be Rakshasa, iti thus, harayaḥ monkeys, hariśca and monkeys, asi thinking to be, iti thus, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasa, samarē fought, anyōnyam one another, jaghnuḥ hit .

In the fierce darkness that prevailed, monkeys hit monkeys thinking to be Rakshasas and Rakshasas hit Rakshasas thinking to be Vanaras (not knowing in darkness) hit each other.
jahidārayacaihītikathaṅvidravasītica .

ēvaṅsutumulaśśabdastasmiṅstamasiśuśruvē ।।6.44.4।।

kālāḥkāñcanasannāhāstasmiṅstamasirākṣasāḥ .

sampradṛśyantaśailēndrādīptauṣadhivanāiva ।।6.44.5।।


jahidāraya strike, caihīti tear, kathaṅ how, vidravasītica why do you run away, ēvaṅ in this manner, sutumulaśśabda loud echo, stasmiṅ such was, stamasi darkness, śuśruvē heard, tasmin such was, tamasi dark complexioned, kālāḥ night, kāñcanasannāhāḥ covered with golden armour, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasa, dīptauṣadhivanāḥ shining like the herbs in the forests, śailēndrāḥ mountain, sampradṛśyanta appeared.

"Strike", "Tear", "Why are you running away?" were the kind of tumultuous echo heard in the darkness of the night. In that darkness the dark complexioned Vanaras and Rakshasas covered with golden armour in the night seemed like shining herbs of the forest in the mountain.
tasmiṅstamasiduṣpārērākṣasāḥkrōdhamūrchitāḥ .

paripēturmahāvēgābhakṣayantaḥplavaṅgamān ।।6.44.6।।


duṣpārē difficult to penetrate, tasmin in that, tamasi darkness, krōdhamūrchitā lost senses overcome by anger, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, plavaṅgamān monkeys, bhakṣayantaḥ devouring, mahāvēgāḥ swiftly, paripētuḥ wandered.

In that pitch darkness, which was difficult even to move, the Rakshasas overcome by anger and lost senses were wandering devouring the monkeys.
tēhayān kāñcanāpīḍān dhvajāṅścāśīviṣōpamān .

āplutyadaśanaistīkṣṇairbhīmakōpāvyadārayan ।।6.44.7।।

vānarābalinōyuddhē.kṣōbhayan rākṣasīṅcamūm .


bhīmakōpāḥ terribly angry, balinaḥ mighty strong, tēvānarāḥ those Vanaras, āplutya springing up, tīkṣṇaiḥ their sharp, dhavanaiḥ teeth, kāñcanāpīḍān golden ornaments, hayān horses, āśīviṣōpamān pervading like fire, dhvajāṅśca of the horses, vyadārayan splitting, yuddhē in battle, rākṣasīm Rakshasa's, camūm , akṣōbhayan tore to pieces.

The mighty strong Vanaras, terribly angry at the Rakshasas sprang up to the sky, and tore with their sharp teeth, the horses of Rakshasas decked with golden ornaments pervading like fire in the battle.
kuñjarān kuñjarārōhān patākādhvajinōrathān ।।6.44.8।।

karṣuścadadaṅśuścadaśanaiḥkrōdhamūrchitāḥ .


vyadārayan lost sense with anger, kuñjarān elephants, kuñjarārōhān mounted on elephants, patākādhvajinaḥ posts tied with flags, rathān chariots, cakarṣuḥ dragged them, daśanaiḥ with teeth, dadaṅśuśca destroyed.

Having lost senses in fury they dragged the elephants, those mounted upon them, and the chariots decorated with posts and flags and tore them with their teeth.
lakṣmaṇaścāpirāmaścaśarairāśīviṣōpamaiḥ ।।6.44.9।।

dṛśyādṛśyānirakṣāṅsipravarāṇinijaghnatuḥ .


rāmaśca Rama as well, lakṣmaṇaścāpi as Lakshmana also, āśīviṣōpamaiḥ shining like venomous snakes, śaraiḥ arrows, dṛśyādṛśyāni visible and invisible, pravarāṇi principal, rakṣāṅsi Rakshasas, nijaghnatuḥ killed

Then Rama as well as Lakshmana with their venomous snakelike arrows killed both visible and invisible principal Rakshasas.
turaṅgakhuravidhvastaṅrathanēmisamutthitam ।।6.44.10।।

rurōdhakarṇanētrāṇiyudhyatāṅdharaṇīrajaḥ .


turaṅgakhuravidhvastam pulverised by the horses hooves, rathanēmisamutthitam crushed by the wheels of chariots, dharaṇīrajaḥ dust from the ground, yudhyatām risen, karṇanētrāṇi ears and eyes, rurōdha filled.

Then the dust rose from the ground pulverised the horses' hooves and crushed by the chariot wheels, filling the ears and eyes of those in war.
vartamānētathāghōrēsaṅgrāmērōmaharṣaṇē ।।6.44.11।।

rudhirōdhāmahāghōrānadyastatraprasusruvuḥ .


tathā like that, ghōrē terrible, rōmaharṣaṇē horripilation, saṅgrāmē war, vartamānē moving, rudhirōdhā river of blood, mahāghōrāḥ terrific, nadyaḥ noise, tatra there, prasusruvuḥ flowed.

In that way as the war was going on, and rivers of blood flowing with the terrific noise it made hair stand on end.
tatōbhērīmṛdaṅgānāṅpaṇavānāṅcanissvanaḥ ।।6.44.12।।

śaṅkhavēṇusvanōnmiśrassambhūvādbhutōpamaḥ .


tataḥ there, bhērīmṛdaṅgānām kettle drums and wooden drums, paṇavānāṅca musical instrument panava, śaṅkhavēṇusvanōmaniśraḥ sounds of conchs, flutes mixed, adbhutōpamaḥ wonderful, nissvanaḥ rattling sounds, sambabhūva arose.

There arose wonderful sounds of musical instruments, the sounds of kettle drums, wooden drums, mixed with conchs and flutes.
hatānāṅstanamānānāṅrākṣasānāṅcaniḥsvanaḥ ।।6.44.13।।

śastānāṅvānarāṇāṅcasambabhūvātidāruṇaḥ .


atra there, stanamānānām in the battlefield, hatānām wounded, rākṣasānāṅca Rakshasas, śastānām appeased, vānarāṇāṅca and Vanaras, dāruṇaḥ dreadful, niḥsvanaḥ roaring sounds, sambabhūva arose.

There from the battlefield arose the roaring sounds of wounded and appeased Rakshasas and Vanaras.
hatairvānaravīraiścaśaktiśūlaparaśvadhaiḥ ।।6.44.14।।

nihataiḥparvatākārairākṣasaiḥkāmarūpibhiḥ .

śastrapuṣpōpahārācatatrāsīdyuddhamēdinī ।।6.44.15।।

dur jñēyādurnivēśācaśōṇitāsrāvakardamā .


tatra there, śastrapuṣpōpahārā offering of flowers dropped from enemies (from the mountain), yuddhamēdinī on the battlefield, hataiḥ killed, vānaravīraiśca Vanara warriors also, śaktiśūlaparaśvadhaiḥ by javelins, tridents and axes, nihataiḥ wounded, kāmarūpibhiḥ who can change their form at will, parvatākāraiḥ of mountain size, rākṣasaiḥ Rakshasa, śōṇitāsrāvakardamā wetted by the flow of blood, dur jñēyā muddy, durnivēśāca difficult to reach, āsīt remained.

There with warriors of Vanaras wounded by javelins, tridents and axes, and the Rakshasas of mountain size who could change their form at will, the battlefield was muddy, and wet with blood flowing and difficult to reach.
sābabhūvaniśāghōrāharirākṣasahāriṇī ।।6.44.16।।

kālarātrīvabhūtānāṅsarvēṣāṅduratikramā .


sarvēṣām for all beings, bhūtānām beings, duratikramā difficult to pass, kālarātrīva like the night of dissolution, sāniśā that night, ghōrā fierce, harirākṣasanāśinī destructive to Vanaras and Rakshasas, babhūva remained.

Like the dreadful night for all beings, difficult to spend, as if it were a dissolution, destructive to Vanaras and Rakshasas.
tatastērākṣasāstatratasmiṅstamasidāruṇē ।।6.44.17।।

rāmamēvābhyavartantasamhṛṣṭāśśaravṛṣṭibhiḥ .


tataḥ thereafter, tatra there, paramadāruṇē exceedingly fearsome, tasmin tamasi in that dark night, tērākṣasāḥ those Rakshasas, samhṛṣṭāḥ highly delighted, śaravṛṣṭibhiḥ rain of arrows, rāmamēva Rama himself, abhyavartanta assailed.

Thereafter in that exceedingly fearsome dark night in the battlefield highly delighted Rakshasas assailed Rama with a rain of arrows.
tēṣāmāpatatāṅśabdaḥkruddhānāmapigarjatām ।।6.44.18।।

udvartaivasattva, nāṅsamudrāṇāṅpraśuśruvē .


kruddhānām angry Rakshasas, garjatām thundering, āpatatām rushing towards, tēṣām them, śabdaḥ noise, sattvānām seven seas, udvartē risen to flow, samudrāṇām into ocean, praśuśruvē heard.

The thundering noise of the angry Rakshasas rushing towards Rama was like the seven seas rising to flow into the ocean.
tēṣāṅrāmaśśaraiḥṣaḍibhaḥṣaḍajaghānaniśācarān ।।6.44.19।।

nimēṣāntaramātrēṇaśitairagniśikhōpamaiḥ .

yamaśatruścadurdharṣōmahāpārśvamahōdarau ।।6.44.20।।

vajradaṅṣṭrōmahākāyastaucōbhauśukasāraṇau .

tēturāmēṇabāṇaughaissarvēmarmasutāḍitāḥ ।।6.44.21।।

yuddhādapasṛtāstatrasāvaśēṣāyuṣō.bhavan .


tēṣāṅ their, rāmaśśaraiḥ Rama's shafts, ṣaḍibhaḥ six, ṣaḍajaghāna striking the six best, niśācarān Rakshasas, nimēṣāntaramātrēṇa in the time of twinkling of eyelid, śitairagniśikhōpamai like flames, durdharṣaḥ difficult to overcome, yamaśatruśca Yamastru, mahāpārśvamahōdarau Mahaparva, Mahodara, mahākāyaḥ Mahakaya, vajradaṅṣṭraḥ Vajradamshtra, tau them, ubhau both, śukasāraṇau Suka, Sarana, tē they, rāmēṇa by Rama, bāṇaughaiḥ fire of arrows, sarvamarmasu vital parts, tāḍitāḥ pierced by, tatra there, yuddhāt from tha battle, apasṛtāḥ escaped, sāvaśēṣāyuṣaḥ with left over life, abhavan remained.

On Rama striking with the six best of shafts like flames in a time of twinkling of eyelids, the six Rakshasas, Yamasatru, Mahaparva, Mahodara, Mahakaya, and Vajradamshtra found it difficult to overcome. Along with the two Suka, Saranas all of them were struck by Rama's fire like arrows in their vital parts and escaped with leftover life.
tatrakāñcanacitrāṅgaiśśarairagniśikhōpamaiḥ ।।6.44.22।।

diśaścakāravimalāḥpradiśaścamahārathaḥ .


mahārathaḥ mighty, tatrakāñcanacitraṅgaiḥ decorated with gold, śaraiḥ shafts, agniśikhōpamaiḥ like the flames of fire, diśaśca in all the directions, pradiśaśca brightened, vimalāḥ bright, cakāra created.

Mighty Rama with his shafts that were like flames of fire, decorated with gold, brightened in all directions.
yētvanyērākṣasābhīmārāmasyābhimukhēsthitāḥ ।।6.44.23।।

tē.pinaṣṭāḥsamāsādyapataṅgāivapāvakam .


rāmasya Rama's, abhimukhē in front, sthitāḥ stood, anyē other, yē who so ever, bhīmā fierce, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasa, tē.pi be it, pāvakam fire, āsādya fallen, pataṅgāḥiva like fireflies, naṣṭāḥ destroyed.

Those fierce Rakshasas who stood in front of Rama were destroyed like fireflies fallen in fire.
suvarṇapuṅkhairviśikhaissapatadbhissahasraśaḥ ।।6.44.24।।

babhūvarajanīcitrākhadyōtairivaśāradī .


sahasraśaḥ thousands, sampatadbhiḥ raining, suvarṇapuṅkhaiḥ golden feathered, viśikhaiḥ arrows, rajanī night, khadyōtaiḥ illumined by fireflies, śāradīva in autumnal, citrā wonderful, babhūva appeared.

By the rain of thousands of golden feathered arrows, the night appeared as if illumined by fireflies and like a wonderful autumnal night.
rākṣasānāṅcaninadairharīṇāṅcāpinissvanaiḥ ।।6.44.25।।

sābabhūvaniśāghōrābhūyōghōratarātadā .


ghōrā fierce, sāniśā that night, tadā then, rākṣasānām Rakshasas, harīṇām Vanaras, nissvanaiḥca making noise, bhūyaḥ appeared, ghōratarā more dreadful, babhūva was.

The night which was fierce appeared more dreadful with the loud noise of Rakshasas and Vanaras.
tēnaśabdēnamahatāpravṛddhēnasamantataḥ ।।6.44.26।।

trikūṭaḥkandarākīrṇaḥpravyāharadivācalaḥ .


samantataḥ all over, pravṛddhēna risen, mahatā huge, tēna by that, śabdēna sound, kandharākīrṇaḥ groups of caves, trikūṭaḥacalaḥ Trikuta mountain, pravyāharadiva responded as if it was someone's call.

Resounding with the sound rising all over the caves of Trikuta mountain echoed and it looked as if the mountain was responding to someone's call.
gōlāṅgūlāmahākāyāstamasātulyavarcasaḥ ।।6.44.27।।

sampariṣvajyabāhubhyāṅbhakṣayanrajanīcarān .


mahākāyāḥ of gigantic body, tamasā dark complexioned, tulyavarcasaḥ highly energetic, gōlāṅgūlāḥ endowed with long tails and black face, bāhubhyām with their shoulders, sampariṣvajya holding, rajanīcarān Rakshasas, bhakṣayan allowed to be devoured.

The dark complexioned Rakshasas of gigantic body, who were highly energetic were held tightly by the monkeys with black faces and long tails and allowed them to be devoured.
aṅgadasturaṇēśatrūnanihantuṅsamupasthitaḥ ।।6.44.28।।

rāvaṇiṅnijaghānāśusārathiṅcahayānapi .


raṇē in war, śatrūn enemies, nihantum killing, samupasthitaḥ who stood determined, aṅgadastu Angada's, āśu in no time, rāvaṇim Ravana's, sārathiṅca charioteer, hayānapi horses also, nijaghāna wounded.

Angada who was determined to kill the enemies, in no time wounded Ravana's charioteer and also the horses.
vartamānētadāghōrēsaṅgrāmēbhṛśadāruṇē ।।6.44.29।।

indrajitturathaṅtyaktvāhatāśvōhatasārathiḥ .

aṅgadēnamahāmāyastatraivāntaradhīyata ।।6.44.30।।


tadā then, ghōrē terrific, bhṛśadāruṇē violent, saṅgrāmē from the battlefield, aṅgadēna by Angada, hatāśvaḥ horses being killed, hatasārathiḥ charioteer killed, mahāmāyaḥ great cheater, indrajittu Indrajith, tatsraiva himself, antaradhīyata disappeared.

As the violent war was going on, the great cheat, Indrajith disappeared from there as Angada had already killed his horses and charioteer.
tatkarmavāliputrasyasarvēdēvāssaharṣibhiḥ .

tuṣṭuvuḥpūjanārhasyataucōbhaurāmalakṣmaṇau ।।6.44.31।।


pūjanārhasya one who deserves to be worshipped, vāliputrasya Vali's son's, tat karma that deed, saharṣibhiḥ even sages, sarvē all, dēvāḥ deities, ubhau both, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshman, tuṣṭuvuḥ praised.

Angada who was worthy of worship, was praised by even the sages, all deities and both Rama and Lakshmana for his action.
prabhāvaṅsarvabhūtānividurindrajitōyudhi .

tēnatētaṅmahātmānaṅtuṣṭāḥdṛṣṭavāpradharṣitam ।।6.44.32।।


yudhi in war, indrajitaḥ Indrajith, prabhāvam deeds, sarvabhūtāni all beings, viduḥ knew, tēna therefore, mahātmānam great, tē his, pradharṣitam gratified, taṅ him, dṛṣṭavā seeing, tuṣṭāḥ rejoiced.

All beings present in war were aware of Indrajith's deeds. Therefore, they were gratified to see him defeated.
tataḥprahṛṣṭāḥkapayassasugrīvavibhīṣaṇāḥ .

sādhusādhvitinēduścadṛṣṭavāśatruṅpradharṣitam ।।6.44.33।।


tataḥ thereafter, sasugrīvavibhīṣaṇāḥ Sugriva and Vibheeshana, kapayaḥ all monkeys, śatrum enemy, pradharṣitam gratification, dṛṣṭavā seeing, prahṛṣṭāḥ rejoiced, sādhusādhviti excellent well done, nēduśca cried out.

Thereafter, Sugriva, Vibheeshana and all monkeys gratified with Angada's deed cried out saying "Excellent, Well done".
indrajittutadātēnanirjitōbhīmakarmaṇā .

saṅyugēvāliputrēṇakrōdhaṅcakrēsudāruṇam ।।6.44.34।।


tadā then, bhīmakarmaṇā of terrible deeds, tēnavāliputrēṇa by Vali's son Angada, samyugē in the combat, nirjitaḥ defeated, indrajittu Indrajith, sudāruṇam terrible, krōdham anger, cakrē turned.

Then Indrajith of terrible deeds defeated by Angada in the comb at became terribly angry.
sō.ntardhānagataḥpāpōrāvaṇīraṇakarkaśaḥ .

adṛśyōniśitānbāṇānmumōcāśanivarcasaḥ ।।6.44.35।।


pāpaḥ sinful, raṇakarkaśaḥ capable of encounter, saḥrāvaṇi that Ravana, adṛśyaḥ rising up, aśanivarcasaḥ remaining invisible, niśitān sharp arrows, bāṇān by arrows, mumōca remained.

That sinful son of Ravana, who is capable of encountering rising up remained invisible and shot sharp arrows.
sarāmaṅlakṣmaṇaṅcaivaghōrairnāgamayaiśśaraiḥ .

bibhēdasamarēkruddhaḥsarvagātrēṣurākṣasaḥ ।।6.44.36।।


kruddhaḥ angry, samarē in war, ghōraiḥ terrific, nāgamayaiḥ full of serpents, śaraiḥ arrows, rākṣasaḥ Rakshasa, rāmaṅca at Rama, lakṣmaṇaṅcaiva and Lakshmana, sarvagātrēṣu all over the body, bibhēda pierced.

The angry Rakshasa (remaining invisible) pierced arrows full of serpents all over the body of Rama and Lakshmana.
māyayāsamvṛtastatramōhayanrāghavauyudhi .

adṛśyassarvabhūtānāṅkūṭayōdhīniśācaraḥ ।।6.44.37।।

babandhaśarabandhēnabhrātaraurāmalakṣmaṇau .


kūṭayōdhī waging war incognito, niśācaraḥ Rakshasa, tatra there, yudhi in war, mayayā by supernatural power, samvṛtaḥ surrounded, rāghavau Raghava, mōhayan in delusion, sarvabhūtānām all beings, adṛśyaḥ, bhrātarau brothers, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshman, śarabandhēna network of arrows, babandha bound.

The Rakshasa waging war in invisible form with all beings by his supernatural powers fought with both the brothers, Rama and Lakshmana and bound them in a network of arrows.
tēnataupuruṣavyāghraukruddhēnāśīviṣaiśśaraiḥ ।।6.44.38।।

sahasānihatauvīrautadāpraikṣantavānarāḥ .


tadā then, vānarāḥ Vanara, kruddhēna by angry, tēna their, āśīviṣaiḥ like venomous monkeys, śaraiḥ arrows, sahasā forcibly, anihatau bound, vīrau warriors, puruṣavyāghrau tigers among men, tau they both, praikṣanta beheld.

Then the Vanaras beheld the two brothers, tigers among men bound forcibly by the angry Rakshasas like venomous monkeys.
prakāśarūpastutadānaśaktastaubādhituṅrākṣasarājaputraḥ .

māyāṅprayōktuṅsamupājagāmababandhataurājasutaudurātmā ।।6.44.39।।


tadā then, rākṣasarājaputraḥ Rakshasa king's son, prakāśarūpaḥ bright form, tau both, bādhitum to bind, naśaktaḥ incapable, māyām deceitfully, prayōktum using, samupājagāma remaining invisible, durātmā evil minded, tau both, rājasutau king's sons, babandha bound.

Then the evil minded Rakshasa king's son, being incapable of getting bound in visible form, by remaining invisible, bound them deceitfully.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēcatuścatvāriṅśassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the forty fourth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
