[Sri Rama and Lakshmana get distressed by the arrows pierced and the Vanaras become despondent.]

satasyagatimanvicchanrājaputraḥpratāpavān .

didēśātibalōrāmōdaśavānarayūthapān ।।6.45.1।।


rājaputraḥ king's son, pratāpavān powerful, atibalaḥ very strong, saḥrāmaḥ Rama, tasya his, gatim where about, anvicchan to know, daśa ten, vānarayūthapān Vanara troops, didēśa assigned.

Rama, the son of the king, a powerful and strong warrior, ordered ten Vanaras to know the whereabouts (of Indrajith).
dvausuṣēṇasyadāyādaunīlaṅcaplavagarṣapam .

aṅgadaṅvāliputraṅcaśarabhaṅcatarasvinam ।।6.45.2।।

vinataṅjāmbavantaṅcasānuprasthaṅmahābalam .

ṛṣabhaṅcarṣabhaskanthamādidēśaparantapaḥ ।।6.45.3।।


parantapa scorcher of enemies, suṣēṇasya to Sushena, dvau both, dāyādau Dwivida, plavagarṣapam best of Vanaras, nīlaṅca and Neela, jāmbavantaṅca and Jambavantha, aṅgadam Angada, tarasvinam courageous, śarabhaṅca Sarabha, vinataṅca Vinatha, hanūmantam Hanumantha, mahābalam mighty strong, sānuprastham Sanuprastha, ṛṣabhaṅca and Rshabam, ṛṣabhaskandham Rshaba Skanda, ādidēśa ordered.

Rama, the scorcher of enemies, ordered the two sons of Sushena, the best of Vanaras Neela, Jambavantha, Angada, as well as courageous Sarabha, Vinatha, and Hanumantha and Sanuprastha endowed with extraordinary might, also Rshaba and Rshaba Skanda.
tēsamprahṛṣṭāharayōbhīmānudyamyapādapān .

ākāśaṅviviśussarvēmārgamāṇādiśōdaśaḥ ।।6.45.4।।


sarvē all, tēharayaḥ those monkeys, samprahṛṣṭāḥ exceedingly delighted, bhīmān huge, mārgamāṇā searching, diśōdaśaḥ ten directions, pādapān held huge trees, ākāśaṅ sky, viviśussarvē sprang.

All those monkeys, exceedingly rejoiced, held huge trees, and went in ten directions searching and sprang to the sky.
tēṣāṅvēgavatāṅvēgamiṣubhirvēgavattaraiḥ .

astravitparamāstairaistuvārayāmāsarāvaṇiḥ ।।6.45.5।।


astravit skilled in the use of weapons, rāvaṇiḥ Ravana's son, paramāstai: expert in mystic weapons, vēgavattaraiḥ endowed with speed, iṣubhiḥ arrows, vēgavatām charged with energy, tēṣām them, vēgam swiftly, vārayāmāsa prohibited

Ravana's son being skilled in the use of weapons and an expert in mystic powers, he prohibited the speed of the Vanaras with his swift arrows.
taṅbhīmamārgamāṇādiśōdaśaḥvēgāharayōnārācaiḥkṣatavigrahāḥ .

andhakārēnadadṛśurmēghaissūryamivāvṛtam ।।6.45.6।।


nārācaiḥ iron arrows, kṣatavigrahāḥ mangled, bhīmavēgāḥ endowed with high speed, harayaḥ Vanaras, andhakārē in utter darkness, tam him, Indrajith mēghaiḥ cloud, āvṛtam covered, sūryamiva like Sun, nadadṛśuḥ not seen.

The Vanaras were mangled with iron arrows, however endowed with high speed they could not make out Indrajith in utter darkness just as the sun covered by clouds.
rāmalakṣmaṇayōrēvasarvadēhabhidaśśarān .

bhṛśamāvēśayāmāsarāvaṇissamitiñjayaḥ ।।6.45.7।।


samitiñjayaḥ ever victorious, rāvaṇiḥ Indrajith, sarvadēhabhidaḥ all over the body, śarān arrows, bhṛśam repeatedly, rāmalakṣmaṇayōrēva on Rama and Lakshmana, āvēśayāmāsa pierced.

Indrajith who is ever victorious, pierced repeatedly arrows all over the body of Rama and Lakshmana.
nirantaraśīrīraututāvubhaurāmalakṣmaṇau .

kruddhēnēndrajitāvīraupannagaiśśaratāṅgataiḥ ।।6.45.8।।


vīrau heroic, tau they, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, ubhau both, kruddhēna furious, indrajitā Indrajith, śaratām with arrows, gataiḥ pierced, pannagaiḥ serpents, nirantaraśarīrau all over the body

Both Rama and Lakshmana were pierced by furious Indrajith with serpents like arrows furious.
tayōḥkṣatajamārgēṇasusrāvarudhiraṅbahu .

tāvubhaucaprakāśētēpuṣpitāvivakiṅśukau ।।6.45.9।।


tayōḥ both of them, kṣatajamārgēṇa wounded profusely, bahu excessively, rudhiram red with blood, susrāva flowing, tau they, ubhau both, puṣpitau flowery, kiṅśukauiva like Kimsuka trees, prakāśitau looked bright.

Both Rama and Lakshmana bleeding excessively, wounded profusely, looked bright and red like Kimsuka trees with flowers.
tataḥparyantaraktākṣōbhinnāñjanacayōpamaḥ .

rāvaṇirbhrātarauvākyamantardhānagatō.bravīt ।।6.45.10।।


tataḥ then, paryantaraktākṣaḥ corners of eyes turned red, bhinnāñjanacayōpamaḥ like a huge collyrium, rāvaṇiḥ Ravana's son, antardhānagataḥ vanished, bhrātarau brothers, vākyam these words, abravīt spoke.

Then Ravana's son with the corner of his eyes turned red in anger looking like a huge collyrium, vanished from there and spoke these words to the two brothers, Rama, and Lakshmana.
yudhyamānamanālakṣayaṅśakrō.pitridaśēśvaraḥ .

draṣṭumāsādituṅvāpinaśaktaḥkiṅpunaryuvām ।।6.45.11।।


anālakṣayam who has fire like eyes, yudhyamānam while fighting war, tridaśēśvaraḥ Lord of gods, śakrō.pi Indra also, draṣṭum to see, āsādituṅnāpi cannot discern, naśaktaḥ not possible, yuvām for you, kiṅpunaḥ why again

Indrajith who had fire like eyes, said," even the ruler of gods cannot discern while I am fighting war, why speak about you? It is not possible."
prāvṛtāviṣujālēnarāghavaukaṅkapatriṇā .

ēṣarōṣaparītātmānayāmiyamasādanam ।।6.45.12।।


rāghavau Raghava brothers, kaṅkapatriṇā plumes of arrows, śarajālēna by the fire of arrows, prāvṛtau enmeshed, rōṣaparītātmā my anger, ēṣaḥ in that way, yamasādanam to the abode of Lord of death, nayāmi am about to send/dispatch you.

"Raghava brothers! You are enmeshed with plumes of arrows all over the body. My anger will not go waste. I will send you to the abode of Yama, the Lord of death."
ēvamuktvātudharmajñaubhrātaraurāmalakṣmaṇau .

nirbibhēdaśitairbāṇaiḥprajaharṣananādaca ।।6.45.13।।


dharmajñau righteous, bhrātarau brothers, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, ēvam in that way, uktvā having been told, śitaiḥ stood, bāṇaiḥ arrows, nirbibhēda paining, prajaharṣa rejoiced, nanādaca roaring aloud.

Indrajith having spoken to the righteous brothers Rama and Lakshmana in that way, began to pain them with arrows and stood rejoiced roaring aloud.
bhinnāñjanacayaśyāmōviṣphāryavipulaṅdhanuḥ .

bhūyōbhūyaśśarānghōrān visasarjamahāmṛthē ।।6.45.14।।


bhinnāñjanacayaśyāmaḥ like a crushed black hill, vipulam huge, dhanuḥ bow, visphāryaḥ mounting, mahāmṛthē great conflict, bhūyōbhūya again and again, ghōrān terrific, śarān arrows, visasarja released.

Indrajith who was like a mass of crushed black hill, mounting the huge bow released terrific arrows again and again in that great conflict.
tatōmarmasumarmajñōmajjayananiśitān śarān .

rāmalakṣmaṇayōrvīrōnanadācamuhurmuhuḥ ।।6.45.15।।


marmajñaḥ vital, vīraḥ warrior, tataḥ thereafter, rāmalakṣmaṇayōḥ Rama and Lakshmana, marmasu vital parts, niśitān sharp, śarān arrows, majjayan digging, muhurmuhuḥ again and again, nanādaca kept roaring.

There after that warrior went on digging sharp arrows into the vital parts of Rama and Lakshmana again and again and kept roaring.
baddhautuśaraśabdēnatāvubhauraṇamūrdhani .

nimēṣāntaramātrēṇanaśēkatudīkṣitum ।।6.45.16।।


raṇamūrdhani facing the battle, nimēṣāntaramātrēṇa in a fraction of twinkling of an eye, baddhau bound, tauubhau both of them, udīkṣitum to retaliate, naśēkatuḥ not have energy.

In a fraction of a second, both Rama and Lakshmana facing the battle were bound by arrows and did not have energy to retaliate.
tatōvibhinnasarvāṅgauśaraśalyācitāvubhau .

dhvajāvivamahēndrasyarajjumuktauprakampitau ।।6.45.17।।

tausampracalitauvīraumarmabhēdēnakarśitau .

nipētaturmahēṣvāsaujagatyāṅjagatīpatī ।।6.45.18।।


tataḥ and then, vibhinnasarvāṅgau pierced all over the body, śaraśalyācitau with heads of arrows, kṛtau staggered, rajjumuktau freed from their cords, prakampitau violently, mahēndrasya Indra's dhvajāviva like banners, sampracalitau shaking, vīrau heroes, marmabhēdēna in vital parts, karśitau pained, mahēṣvāsau gallant princes, jagatīpatī Lords of the world, tau both, jagatyām world, nipētatuḥ fell.

Pierced all over their bodies with the heads of arrows, the gallant princes freed themselves from the cords by shaking violently like the banners of Indra. Pained by the hurting of the vital parts of both the princes, the Lords of the world fell.
tauvīraśayanēvīrauśayānaurudhirōkṣitau .

śaravēṣṭitasarvāṅgaivārtauparamapīḍitau ।।6.45.19।।


vīraśayanē warrior's bed, śayānau bed, rudhirōkṣitau drenched in blood, śaravēṣṭitasarvāṅgai all their limbs covered with arrows, paramapīḍitau highly distressed, tauvīrau those warriors, ārtau lying.

The princes were lying on the warrior's bed in the battlefield, their limbs fully covered with arrows, in a highly distressed state.
nahyaviddhaṅtayōrgātrēbabhūvāṅguḷamantaram .

nānirbhinnaṅnacāstabdamākarāgrādajihmagaiḥ ।।6.45.20।।


yōḥ their, gātrē in the body, aviddham not wounded, aṅguḷamātram not even finger breadth space (an inch of space), antaram all over, nababhūva remained without being pierced, ajihmagaiḥ unhurt, ākarāgrāt not even a part of the body was left, anirbhinnam not wounded, astabdam unshaken, na not.

Not an inch of space on their bodies remained without being pierced. Not even a part of the body was left unshaken, unhurt, or wounded.
tautukrūrēṇanihataurakṣasākāmarūpiṇā .

asṛksusruvatustīvraṅjalaṅprasravaṇāviva ।।6.45.21।।


krūrēṇa by the cruel, kāmarūpiṇā capable of acquiring desired form, rakṣasā Rakshasa, nihatau wounded, tau both, prasravaṇau flowed, jalam iva like water, tīvram copiously, asṛk vital breaths, susruvatuḥ brought forth.

Wounded by the cruel Rakshasas capable of changing form at their will, blood flowed from their body copiously like water from spring bringing out their vital life breaths.
papātaprathamaṅrāmōviddhōmarmasumārgaṇaiḥ .

krōdhādindrajitāyēnapurāśakrōvinirjitaḥ ।।6.45.22।।


yēna by whom, purā earlier, śakraḥ Indra, vinirjitaḥ utterly defeated, indrajitā Indrajith, krōdhāt in anger, mārgaṇaiḥ arrows, marmasu vital parts, viddhaḥ, rāmaḥ Rama, pradhamam first, papāta fell.

Rama fell first pierced by arrows in his vital parts released in anger by Indrajith, by whom Indra was utterly defeated.
rukmapuṅkhaiḥprasannāgrairadhōgatibhirāśugaiḥ .

nārācairardhanārācairbhallairañjalikairapi ।।6.45.23।।

vivyādhavatsadantaiścasiṅhadaṅṣṭraiḥkṣuraistathā .


rukmapuṅkhaiḥ coated with gold, prasannāgraiḥ pure bright tips, adhōgatibhiḥ descending unobstructed like dust, āśugaiḥ quickly, nārācaiḥ with even and circular heads, arthanārācaiḥ half-moon shaped heads, bhallaiḥ axe like heads, añjalikairapi heads like joined palms, vatsadantaiśca heads resembling teeth of calf, siṅhadaṅṣṭraiḥ like lion's teeth, tathā in the same way, kṣuraiḥ heads as sharp as a razor, vivyādha hurt.

Indrajith pierced Rama with arrows coated with gold and gold tipped arrows, which had even and circular heads, with half-moon arrows, with axe like heads, heads like joined palms, heads resembling teeth of calf and lion teeth arrows as well as razor sharp arrows which descended quickly unobstructed like dust.
savīraśayanēśiśyēvijyamādāyakārmukam ।।6.45.24।।

bhinnamuṣṭiparīṇāhaṅtriṇataṅrukmabhūṣitam .


saḥ he, Rama, vijyam quitting, bhinnamuṣṭiparīṇāham strung and bent at both ends, three places, rukmabhūṣitam gold plated, kārmukam bow, ādāya holding, vīraśayanē hero's bed, śiśyē relaxed.

Rama lay relaxed on the hero's bed quitting his goldplated bow strung and bent at both ends, and the middle.
bāṇapātāntarērāmaṅpatitaṅpuruṣarṣabham ।।6.45.25।।

satatralakṣmaṇōdṛṣṭavānirāśōjīvitē.bhavat .


lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, tatra there, bāṇapātāntarē at an arrow's throw, patitam fallen, puruṣarṣabham best of men, dṛṣṭavā beholding, jīvitē life, nirāśaḥ disappointed, abhavat remained.

Lakshmana remained beholding the best of men fallen at an arrow's throw disappointed at his life.
rāmaṅkamalapatrākṣaṅśarabandhaparikṣatam ।।6.45.26।।

śuśōcabhrātaraṅdṛṣṭavāpatitaṅdharaṇītalē .


kamalapatrākṣam lotus petal eyed, bhrātaram brother, rāmam at Rama, śarabandhaparikṣatam pained by pierced arrows, dharaṇītalē on the ground, patitam fallen, dṛṣṭavā seeing, śuśōca grieved.

Lakshmana grieved seeing his elder brother Rama pierced by arrows, pained, and fallen on the ground.
harayaścāpitaṅdṛṣṭavāsantāpaṅparamaṅgatāḥ ।।6.45.27।।

śōkārtāścukraśurghōramaśrupūritalōcanāḥ .


harayaścāpi even the monkeys, tam him, dṛṣṭavā beholding, paramam very, santāpam much stricken, gatāḥ fallen, śōkārtāḥ in agony, aśrupūriyalōcanāḥ their eyes filled with tears, ghōram terrible, cukruśuḥ shrieked.

Even the monkeys' eyes were filled with tears, very much stricken with grief seeing Rama fallen and shrieked.
baddhautuvīraupatitauśayānautēvānarāssamparivāryatasthuḥ .

samāgatāvāyusutapramukhyāviṣādamārtāḥparamaṅcajagmuḥ ।।6.45.28।।


vāyusutapramukhyāḥ wind god's son's army, tēvānarāḥ the Vanaras, samāgatāḥ collected together, baddhau bound, vīraupatitau fallen heroes, śayānau lying, tau both, samparivārya surrounding, tasthuḥ stood, ārtāḥ despondent, paramam extremely, viṣādam sorrow, jagmuḥca remained.

Hanuman's army of Vanaras collected together stood surrounding fallen princes lying on the ground, despondent and extremely sorrowful.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēpañcacatvāriṅśassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the forty fifth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
