Sloka & Translation

[Hanuman and others guard Rama and Lakshmana. Ravana commands Rakshasa woman to take Sita in the Pushpaka and show her the state of Rama and Lakshmana. Sita bursts on seeing the fate of Rama and Lakshmana.]

pratipraviṣṭēlaṅkāyāṅkṛtārthērāvaṇātmajē .

rāghavaṅparivāryārturakṣurvānararṣabhāḥ ।।6.47.1।।


pati king, rāvaṇātmajē Ravana's son, kṛtārthē accomplished the task, laṅkāyām into Lanka, praviṣṭē entered, atha and then, vānararṣabhāḥ bull among monkeys, rāghavam at Raghava, parivāryārtuḥ around, rarakṣuḥ guarded.

After accomplishing the task Ravana's son entered Lanka while the bull among monkeys guarded Raghava staying around.
hanumānaṅgadōnīlaḥsuṣēṇaḥkumudōnalaḥ .

gajōgavākṣōgavayaśśarabhōgandhamādanaḥ ।।6.47.2।।

jāmbavānṛṣabhaḥsundōrambhaḥśatavaliḥpṛthuḥ .

vyūḍhānīkāścayattāścadrumānādāyasarvataḥ ।।6.47.3।।

vīkṣamāṇādiśassarvāstiryagūrdhvaṅcavānarāḥ .

tṛṇēṣvapicacēṣṭatsurākṣasāitimēnirē ।।6.47.4।।


hanumān Hanuman, aṅgadaḥ Angada, nīlaḥ Nila, suṣēṇaḥ Sushena, kumudaḥ Kumuda, nalaḥ Nala, gavayaḥ Gava, śarabhaḥ Sarabha, gandhamādanaḥ Gandhamadana, sānuprasthaḥ Sanuprastha, jāmbavān Jambavan, ṛṣabhaḥ Rshaba, sundaḥ Sandhu, rambhaḥ Rambha, śatavaliḥ Satavali, pṛthuḥ Pruthu, vānarāḥ Vanara, sarvataḥ always, vyūḍhānīkā having arranged, yattāśca in place, drumān trees, ādāya getting, sarvāḥ all, diśaḥ directions, tiryak above, ūrdhvaṅca either side, vīkṣamāṇāḥ looking, tṛṇēṣvapi even a blade of grass, cēṣṭatsu moved, rākṣasāḥiti thinking to be Rakshasas, mēnirē watched.

Having arranged the army in place, Hanuman, Angada, Nila, Kumuda, Nala, Gava, Sarabha, Gandhamadana, Sanuprastha, Jambavan, Rshaba, Rambha, Satavali, Pruthu, who are always alert were holding trees and looking above, on either side and in all directions and guarded Rama. Whenever there was movement of even a blade of grass, they thought that it might be Rakshasa.
rāvaṇaścāpisamhṛṣṭōvisṛjyēndrajitaṅsutam .

ajuhāvatatassītākṣiṇīrākṣasīstadā ।।6.47.5।।


rāvaṇaścāpi Ravana also, samhṛṣṭaḥ contended, sutam son, indrajitam Indrajith, visṛjya sending away, tataḥ then, sītākṣiṇīḥ caretaker of Sita, rākṣasīḥ rakshasi, tadā then, ājuhāva called for.

Ravana was also content to send away his son Indrajith and calls for the Rakshasa woman, caretaker of Sita.
rākṣasyastrijaṭācaivaśāsanātsamupasthitāḥ .

tāuvācatatōhṛṣṭōrākṣasīrākṣasādhamaḥ ।।6.47.6।।


rākṣasyaḥ rakshasi, trijaṭācaiva Trijata also, śāsanāt by the order, tam his, upasthitāḥ waited, tataḥ there, hṛṣṭaḥ joyful, rākṣasādhamaḥ lowly Rakshasa, tāḥrākṣasīḥ that rakshasi, uvāca addressed.

The rakshasi and also Trijata came and waited there by the order. Lowly Rakshasa, Ravana, full of joy addressed rakshasi.
hatāvindrajitākhyātavaidēhyārāmalakṣmaṇau .

puṣpakaṅtatsamārōpyadarśayadhvaṅhatauraṇē ।।6.47.7।।


rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, indratā by Indrajith, hatau killed, vaidēhyāḥ to Vaidehi, tat that, puṣpakam aerial car, samārōpya ascended, raṇē war, hatau killed, darśayadhvam you may show.

"Rama and Lakshmana are killed by Indrajith in war. Take Vaidehi in the aerial car and show her."
yadāśrayādavaṣṭabdhāmāmupatiṣṭhati .

sō.syābhartāsahabhrātrānihatōraṇamūrdhani ।।6.47.8।।


iyam that husband, yatāśrayāt with whose support, avaṣṭabdhā being proud, mām to me, naupatiṣṭhatē not yielding, saḥ he, asyāḥ, bhartā husband, raṇamūrdhani unconscious in the war, bhrātrāsaha along with brother, nihataḥ has been killed.

"That husband with whose support she was proud and not yielding to me is unconscious along with his brother who have been killed," said Ravana.
nirviśaṅkānirudvignānirapēkṣācamaithilī .

māmupasthāsyatēsītāsarvābharaṇabhūṣitā ।।6.47.9।।


maithilī Mythili, sītā Sita, nirviśaṅkā rid of sorrow, nirudvignā free from perturbation, nirapēkṣā giving up hope, sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā adorned with all kinds of jewels, mām me, upasthāsyatē wait on me.

"Mythili, rid of sorrow and free from perturbation, giving up hope (of Rama) can wait upon me adorned with all kinds of jewels."
adyakālavaśaṅprāptaṅraṇērāmaṅsalakṣmaṇam .

avēkṣyavinivṛttāsācānyāṅgatimapaśyatī ।।6.47.10।।

nirapēkṣāviśālākṣīmāmupasthāsyatēsvayam .


viśālākṣī broad eyed, sā that, adya coming to conclusion, raṇē war, salakṣmaṇam along with Lakshmana, rāmam Rama, kālavaśam in course of time, gatam gone, avēkṣya seek, vinivṛttā, anyām no other, gatim haven, apaśyatī will seek, nirapēkṣā getting rid of hope, svayam Ravana, mām me, upasthāsyatē will on her own accord.

Ravana thought that the broad eyed Sita coming to conclusion in course of time that Rama has gone along with Lakshmana, rid of hope, with no other haven, will seek him on her own accord.
tasyatadvacanaṅśrutvārāvaṇasyadurātmanaḥ ।।6.47.11।।

rākṣasyastāstathētyuktvājagmurvaiyatrapuṣpakam .


tāḥrākṣasyaḥ those Rakshasas, durātmanaḥ evil minded, tasyarāvaṇasya that Ravana's, tat vacanam those words, śrutvā hearing, tathāiti thus, uktvā said, puṣpakam aerial car, yatra there, jagmuḥvai went.

The evil minded Rakshasas listening to Ravana's words went to the aerial car.
tataḥpuṣpakamādāyarākṣasyōrāvaṇājñayā ।।6.47.12।।

aśōkavanikāsthāṅtāṅmaithilīṅsamupānayan .


tataḥ thereafter, rākṣasyaḥ Rakshasas, rāvaṇājñayā by Ravana's order, puṣpakam aerial car, ādāya went, aśōkavanikāsaṅsthām in the Ashoka garden, tām they, maithilīm Mythili, samupānayan went near.

Thereafter, by Ravana's order the Rakshasas went with the aerial car to Mythili in the Ashoka Garden.
tāmādāyaturākṣasyōbhartṛśōkaparājitām ।।6.47.13।।

sītāmārōpayāmāsurvimānaṅpuṣpakaṅtadā .


tadā then, rākṣasyaḥ Rakshasas, bhartṛśōkaparājitām overcome by husband 's grief, tāṅsītām that Sita, ādāya went near, puṣpakaṅvimānam Pushpaka aerial car, ārōpayāmāsuḥ to ascend.

Then the Rakshasas took the aerial car near Sita who was overcome by her husband's grief.
tataḥpuṣpakamārōpyasītāṅtrijaṭayāsaha ।।6.47.14।।

jagmurdarśayituṅtasyairākṣasyōrāmalakṣmaṇau .


tataḥ thereafter, rākṣasyaḥ Rakshasas, trijaṭayāsaha along with Trijata, sītām to Sita, puṣpakam Pushpaka ārōpya making to ascend, tasyai that, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, darśayitum to see, jagmuḥ went.

Thereafter the Rakshasas along with Trijata went to Sita and made her ascend Pushpaka to see Rama and Lakshmana.
rāvaṇō.kārayallaṅkāṅpatākādhvajamālinīm ।।6.47.15।।

prāghōṣayatahṛṣṭaścalaṅkāyāṅrākṣasēśvaraḥ .

rāghavōlakṣmaṇaścaivahatāvindrajitāraṇē ।।6.47.16।।


rākṣasēśvaraḥ Lord of Rakshasas, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, hṛṣṭaḥ rejoiced, laṅkām Lanka, patākādhvajamālinīm with rows of flags and posts, kārayāmāsa made decorations, rāghavaḥ Raghava, lakṣmaṇaścaiva and Lakshmana, indrajitā by Indrajith, raṇē in war, hatau killed, prāghōṣayata proclaimed.

The Lord of Rakshasas rejoiced and went to Lanka decorated with flags and posts proclaiming that Rama and Lakshmana were killed by Indrajith in war.
vimānēnāpigatvātusītātrijaṭayāsaha .

dadarśavānarāṇāṅtusarvaṅsainyaṅnipātitam ।।6.47.17।।


sītā Sita, trijaṭayāsaha with Trijata, vimānēna on the Pushpaka, gatvā going, nipātitam fallen, sarvam all, vānarāṇāṅsainyam Vanara army, dadarśa saw.

Sita and Trijata flying on the Pushpaka saw all the fallen Vanara army.
prahṛṣṭamanasaścāpidadarśapiśitāśanān .

vānarāṅścātiduḥkhārtānrāmalakṣmaṇapārśvataḥ ।।6.47.18।।


prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ extremely happy, piśitāśanān grief stricken, rāmalakṣmaṇapārśvataḥ near Rama and Lakshmana, atiduḥkhārtān very much agonised, vānarāṅśca Vanaras also, dadarśa beheld.

Sita beheld extremely happy Rakshasas, and grief stricken Vanaras, in great agony near Rama and Lakshmana.
tatassītādadarśōbhauśayānauśaratalpagau .

lakṣmaṇaṅcāpirāmaṅcavisaṅjñauśarapīḍitau ।।6.47.19।।

vidhvastakavacauvīrauvipraviddhaśarāsanau .

sāyakaicaśinnasarvāṅgauśarastambamayaukṣitau ।।6.47.20।।


tataḥ thereafter, sītā Sita, śayānau lying, śaratalpagau on the bed of arrows, visaṅjñau unconscious, śarapīḍitau struck by arrows, vidhvastakavacau with shield of darts, vīrau heroes, vipraviddhaśarāsanau lying on bed of arrows, sāyakaiḥ arrows with feathers, bhinnasarvāṅgau all limbs wounded with shattered armour and bows, kṣitau broken, śarastambamayau reeds of arrows, ubhau both, lakṣmaṇaṅcāpi Lakshmana with, rāmaṅca Rama, dadarśa beheld.

Thereafter Sita beheld both Rama and Lakshmana lying on the bed of arrows, unconscious, struck by arrows, with shields of darts, arrows with feathers, all limbs wounded with shattered armour, bows and reeds.
taudṛṣṭavābhrātarautatrapravīraupuruṣarṣabhau .

śayānaupuṇḍarīkākṣaukumārāvivapāvakī ।।6.47.21।।

śaratalpagatauvīrautathābhūtānararṣabhau .

duḥkhārtākaruṇaṅsītāsubhṛśaṅvilalāpaha ।।6.47.22।।


pravīrau gallant, pururṣabhau bulls among men, puṇḍarīkākṣau with big eyes like that of Indra, pāvakī fire, vīrau heroes, kumārāviva sons like, śaratalpagatau lying on the bed of arrows, tatra there, śayānau lying, tathābhūtau in such a state, nararṣabhau best among men, taubhrātarau those two brothers, dṛṣṭavā beholding, sītā Sita, duḥkhārtā filled with sorrow, karuṇam piteously, subhṛśam exceedingly affected, vilalāpaha burst into tears.

Seeing the gallant bulls among men, the two brothers with big eyes, the two heroes like sons of fire god lying on the bed of arrows in such a state, Sita was filled with intense sorrow and pity burst into tears being affected extremely.
bhartāramanavadyāṅgīlakṣmaṇaṅcāsitēkṣaṇā .

prēkṣyapāṅsuṣucēṣṭantaururōdajanakātmajā ।।6.47.23।।


anavadyāṅgī of defect less limbs, asitēkṣaṇā darkeyed, janakātmajā J anaka's daughter, pāṅsuṣu rolling, cēṣṭantau both powerful, bhartāram at the husband, lakṣmaṇaṅca and Lakshmana, prēkṣya seeing, rurōda roared aloud.

Janaka's daughter of beautiful limbs and dark eyes, seeing her husband and Lakshmana, both powerful ones rolling, roared aloud.
sabāṣpaśōkābhihatāsamīkṣyataubhrātaraudēvasamaprabhāvau .

vitarkayantīnidhanaṅtayōssāduḥkhānvitāvākyamidaṅjagāda ।।6.47.24।।


sabāṣpaśōkābhihatā as tears were rolling, sā she, dēvasamaprabhāva equal to gods in glory, taubhrātarau brothers, samīkṣya beholding, tayōḥ both of them, nidhanam died, vitarkayantī suspecting, duḥkhānvitā immersed in grief, idam these, vākyam words, jagāda said.

As tears were rolling down her eyes, beholding the brothers who were equal to gods in their glory, suspecting them to be dead Sita spoke these words
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēsaptacatvāriṅśassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the forty seventh sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
