[Sita gets immersed in grief. Trijata reassures her and takes her back to Ashoka grove.]

bhartāraṅnihataṅdṛṣṭavālakṣmaṇaṅcamahābalam .

vilalāpabhṛśaṅsītākaruṇaṅśōkakarśitā ।।6.48.1।।


sītā Sita, nihatam killed, bhartāram husband, mahābalam mighty, lakṣmaṇaṅca Lakshmana also, dṛṣṭavā seeing, bhṛśam intense, śōkakarśitā emotional in sorrow, karuṇam piteously, vilalāpa cried.

On seeing her husband killed and also mighty Lakshmana, Sita became emotional in intense sorrow and cried piteously.
ūcurlakṣaṇikāyēmāṅputriṇyavidhavētica .

tē.dyasarvēhatērāmējñāninō.nṛtavādinaḥ ।।6.48.2।।


yē whoever, lakṣaṇikāḥ capable of predicting, mām my, putriṇī mother of sons, avidhavētica not become a widow, ūcuḥ told, tē they, jñāninaḥ knowledgeable, capable of reading future, adya their, rāmē Rama, hatē killed, anṛtavādinaḥ liars.

"Whoever was capable of predicting the future have said that I will be the mother of sons and not become a widow. Now if Rama is dead, they become liars."
yajvanōmahiṣīṅyēmāmūcuḥpatnīṅcasattriṇaḥ .

tē.dyasarvēhatērāmējñāninō.nṛtavādinaḥ ।।6.48.3।।


yē whoever, mām me, yajvanaḥ men who conduct sacrificial ceremonies, mahiṣīm consort, sattriṇaḥ knowledgeable of sastras, pantīm with wife, ūcuḥ told, sarvē all, tējñāninaḥ those wise, adya told, rāmē Rama, hatē is dead, anṛtavādinaḥ liars.

"Whoever conducted sacrificial ceremonies and are knowledgeable of sastras have told me that I would be consort. They are all liars now as Rama is killed."
ūcussaṅśravaṇēyēmāṅdvijāḥkārtāntikāśśubhām .

tē.dyasarvēhatērāmējñāninō.nṛtavādinaḥ ।।6.48.4।।


kārtāntikāḥ those astrologers, yē whoever, dvijāḥ brahmins, saṅśravaṇē promised, mām my śubhām auspicious, ūcuḥ spoken, tē they, sarvē all, jñāninaḥ wise, adya, rāmē Rama, hatē killed, anṛtavādinaḥ liars.

"The astrologers, brahmins who have promised me to be auspicious and all the wise who have spoken are liars if Rama is killed."
vīrapārthivapatnītvāṅyēvidurbhartṛpūjitām .

tē.dyasarvēhatērāmējñāninō.nṛtavādinaḥ ।।6.48.5।।


vīrapārthivapatnī wife of man of great prowess, tvām you, bhartṛpūjitām worshipped by husband, yē whoever, viduḥ know, tē they, sarvē all, jñāninaḥ wise men, adya predicted, rāmē Rama, hatē killed, anṛtavādinaḥ liars.

"Whoever has told me that I will be the wife of a man of great prowess, worshipped by husband, and all wise men are liars if Rama is killed."
imānikhalupadmānipādayōryaiḥkulastriyaḥ .

adhirājyē.bhiṣicyantēnarēndraiḥpatibhiḥsaha ।।6.48.6।।


pādayōḥ on the sole of my feet, imāni such, padmānikhalu lotus marks, yaiḥ whose, kulastriyaḥ virtuous women, narēndraiḥ king, patibhiḥsaha husband also, adhirājyē kingdom, abhiṣicyantē will be crowned.

"Those virtuous lotus marks that a woman has on their feet to become crowned queen of a kingdom are seen in my feet."
vaidhavyaṅyāntiyairnāryō.lakṣaṇairbhāgyadurlabhāḥ .

nātmanantānipaśyāmipaśyantīhatalakṣaṇā ।।6.48.7।।


hatalakṣaṇā auspicious signs gone, paśyantī to see, bhāgadurlabhāḥ very difficult, nāryaḥ noble, yaiḥ whoever, alakṣaṇaiḥvaidhavyam inauspicious widowed, yānti indeed, tāni not in me, ātmanaḥ myself, napaśyāmi do not see.

"Those inauspicious signs found in unlucky and widowed women are difficult to find in me. I do not see any such signs in me."
satyanāmānipadmānistrīṇāmuktānilakṣaṇaiḥ .

tānyadyanihatērāmēvitathānibhavantimē ।।6.48.8।।


lakṣaṇaiḥ characteristic marks, padmāni lotuses, strīṇām in sastras, satyanānāmāni truthful lines, uktāni told, mē my, tāni such, adya, rāmē Rama, nihatē killed, vitathāni false, bhavanti will be.

"Characteristic marks of lotuses, unfailing in their effect (truthful) predicted are all false if Rama is killed."
kēśāssūkṣmāssamānīlābhruvaucāsaṅhatēmama .

vṛttēcārōmakējaṅghēdantāścāviraḷāmama ।।6.48.9।।


mama my, kēśāḥ hair, sūkṣmāḥ fine, nīlāḥ dark, samāḥ uniform, bhruvauca my eyebrows, asaṅhatē not joined, mama my, jaṅghē shanks, vṛttē round, arōmakē devoid of hair, dantāśca teeth, aviralāḥ closely set.

"My hair is fine and dark, my eyebrows are uniform and not joined, my shanks are round devoid of hair, and my teeth are closely set."
śaṅkhēnētrēkaraupādaugulphāvūrūcamēcitau .

anuvṛttanakhāssnigdhāssamāścāṅgulayōmama ।।6.48.10।।


mama my, śaṅkhē temporal bones, nētrē eyes, karau hand s, pādau feet, gulphau ankles, ūrū thighs, samau even, citau fleshy, aṅgulayaḥ fingers, anuvṛttanakhāḥ nails are round, snigdhāḥ well proportioned, samāśca and bright.

"My temporal bones, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, thighs are even, and my fingers are fleshy and round with nails proportioned and bright."
stanaucāviraḷaumāmakaumagnacūcukau .

magnācōtsaṅginīnābhaḥpārśvōraskaṅcamēcitam ।।6.48.11।।


māmakau my, stanau breast, aviraḷau well formed, pīnau developed, magnacūcukau depressed nipples, utsaṅginī joined, nābhiḥ navel, magnā deep, mē my, pārśvōraskaṅca and the surrounding area, citam fleshy.

"My breasts are well formed and developed, the nipples are depressed and joined, the navel is deep, and the surrounding part is fleshy."
mamavarṇōmaṇinibhōmṛdūnyaṅgaruhāṇica .

pratiṣṭhitāṅdvādaśabhirmāmūcuśśubhalakṣaṇām ।।6.48.12।।


mama my, varṇaḥ colour, maṇinibhaḥ shine of gem, aṅgaruhāṇi hair on my skin, mṛdūni soft, dvādaśabhiḥ ten fingers and toes, pratiṣṭhitām when placed on the ground, mām me, śubhalakṣaṇām auspicious marks, ūcuḥ said to be.

"My complexion is like the shine of a gem. My hair on the skin is soft. When I touch the ground with my ten fingers and toes, it is said to leave auspicious marks."
samagrayavamacchridrapāṇipādaṅcavarṇavat .

mandasmitētyēvacamāṅkanyālākṣaṇinōdvijāḥ ।।6.48.13।।


pāṇipādaṅca palms and feet, samagrayavam with no space in between, acchridram collected, varṇavat described, mandasmitā gentle smile, iti thus, mām myself, kanyālākṣaṇinaḥ marks of auspiciousness, dvijāḥ brahmins.

"My palms and feet placed together have no space which are auspicious marks and brahmins have said that my gentle smile is also a mark of auspiciousness."
ādhirājyē.bhiṣēkōmēbrāhmaṇaiḥpatināsaha .

kṛtāntakuśalairuktaṅtatsarvaṅvitathīkṛtam ।।6.48.14।।


patināsaha with husband, mē I, ādhirājyābhiṣēkaḥ consecrated, kṛtāntakuśalaiḥ astrologers prediction, brāhmaṇaiḥ by brahmins, uktam said, tat sarvam all that, vitathīkṛtam falsified.

"The prediction of astrologers that I will be consecrated with my husband and all that is falsified."
śōdhayitvājanasthānaṅpravṛtatimupalabhyaca .

tīrtvāsāgaramakṣōbhyaṅbhrātaraugōṣpadēhatau ।।6.48.15।।


janasthānam Janasthana, śōdhayitvā in search of me, pravṛtatim knowing my where about, upalabhyaca to get me, akṣōbhyam impossible, sāgaram ocean, tīrtvā crossing, bhrātarau brothers, gōṣpadē maya of Indrajith which is like foot print of cow's hoof, hatau killed.

nanuvāruṇamāgnēyamaindraṅvāyavyamēvaca .

astraṅbrahmaśiraścaivapratyapadyatām ।।6.48.16।।


rāghavau Raghavas, vāruṇam Varuna weapons, āgnēyam fire weapons, aindram Indra's, vāyavyamēvaca and even wind god's, brahmaśiraḥastraṅca even Brahma's, pratyapadyatāṅnanu why have they not used

"Raghavas knew to use Varuna's weapons, fire god's weapons, Indra's also, even wind god's and Brahma's weapons. Why have they not used?"
adṛśyamānēnaraṇēmāyayāvāsavōpamau .

mamanāthāvanāthāyānihataurāmalakṣmaṇau ।।6.48.17।।


anāthāyāḥ orphaned, mama I am, nāthau dear husband, vāsanōpamau equal to Indra in valour, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, raṇē in war, māyayā by conjuring trick, adṛśyamānēna by being invisible, nihatau killed

"Indrajith remaining invisible in war by conjuring could kill my husband who is equal to Indra in valour. Rama and Lakshmana! I am orphaned now."
nahidṛṣṭipathaṅprāpyarāghavasyaraṇēripuḥ .

jīvanprantivartētayadyapisyānmanōjavaḥ ।।6.48.18।।


ripuḥ enemy, manōjavaḥ who is endowed with speed in thought, syādyadyapi if seen, raṇē in war, rāghavasya by Rama, dṛṣṭipatham range of sight, prāpya happens, jīvan life, naprantivartatēhi not go alive.

"Even if the enemy is endowed with speed of thought, if he comes in the range of Rama's sight, he will not go alive."
nakalasyātibhārō.stikṛtāntaścasudurjayaḥ .

yatrarāmaḥsahabhrātrāśētēyudhinipātitaḥ ।।6.48.19।।


yatra since, rāmaḥ Rama, bhrātrāsaha with his brother, yudhi in the battle, nipātitaḥ fallen, śētē lies, kālasya time spirit, atibhāraḥ too heavy, nāsti not, kṛtāntaśca capable of doing anything, sudurjayaḥ difficult to conquer.

"Rama along with Lakshmana has fallen in the battlefield. Time spirit is too heavy and capable of doing anything, so difficult to conquer."
naśōcāmitathārāmaṅlakṣmaṇaṅcamahāratham .

vātmānaṅjananīṅcāpiyathāśvaśrūṅtapasvinīm ।।6.48.20।।


tapasvinīm one who observes austerities, śvaśrūm mother-in-law, yathā like that, tathā so also, rāmam Rama, naśōcāmi not grieve, mahāratham great warrior, lakṣmaṇaṅca even Lakshmana, ātmānam my own self, najananīṅcāpi even my mother, na not.

"When I think of Rama or even great warrior Lakshmana, or my mother or myself I am not so sad as when I think of my mother-in-law who is an observer of austerity."
sātucintayatēnityaṅsamāptavratamāgatam .

kadādrakṣyāmisītāṅcalakṣmaṇaṅcasarāghavam ।।6.48.21।।


sātu she also, samāptavratam vow completed, āgatam will come, sarāghavam Raghava, lakṣmaṇaṅca and Lakshmana, sītām ca Sita also, kadā then, drakṣyāmi will see, nityam always, cintayatē worried

"She will also be worried and wait for Rama who has completed his vow (for fourteen years) and Lakshmana and Sita to come."
paridēvayamānāṅtāṅrākṣasītrijaṭābravīt .

māviṣādaṅkṛthādēvī bhartā.yaṅtavajīvati ।।6.48.22।।


paridēvayamānām god like woman, tām her, rākṣasī rakshasi, trijaṭā Trijata, abravīt said, dēvī Devi, viṣādam sorrow, mākṛthāḥ not despair, tava your, bhartā husband, ayam this, jīvati is alive.

Looking at Sita, worried, Trijata said 'Devi, do not despair. Your husband is alive'.
kāraṇānicavakṣyāmimahāntisadṛśānica .

yathēmaujīvatōdēvībhrātaraurāmalakṣmaṇau ।।6.48.23।।


dēvī Devi, bhrātarau brothers, imau like this, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, yathā in this way, jīvataḥ alive, mahānti great, sadṛśāni living, kāraṇānica and the reasons, vakṣyāmi I see.

"O Devi! Rama and Lakshmana are alive. I see great reasons for this."
nahikōpaparītāniharṣaparyutsukānica .

bhavantiyudhiyōdhānāṅmukhāninihatēpatau ।।6.48.24।।


patau husband, yudhi in war, nihatē ceased of life, yōdhānām in the war, mukhāni face, kōpaparītāni angry look, harṣaparyutsukānica happy looks, nabhavantihi not be there.

"If a husband ceases life in war, their face will not have an angry look or happy appearance."
idaṅvimānaṅvaidēhī puṣpakaṅnāmanāmataḥ .

divyaṅtvāṅdārayannaivaṅyadyētaugatajīvitau ।।6.48.25।।


vaidēhī Vaidehi, nāmataḥ indeed, puṣpakaṅnāma Pushpaka by name, divyam auspicious, idaṅvimānam this aerial car, ētau if they, gatajīvitauyadi are ceased of life, tvām your, nadhārayēt would not have borne.

"Vaidehi! Indeed, this aerial car called Pushpaka which is an auspicious one would not have brought you if they are ceased of life."
hatavīrapradhānāhigatōtsāhānirudyamā .

sēnābhramatisaṅ khyēṣuhatakarṇēvanaurjalē ।।6.48.26।।


saṅ khyēṣu the troop, hatavīrapradhānā chief leader dead, sēnā army, gatōtsāhā lost interest, nirudyamā without making effort, jalē in water, hatakarṇā lost helmsman, nauḥiva like ship, bhramati moves about.

"The army chief killed, the interest of the troop lost, Pushpaka will move about without making an effort like the ship which lost the helmsman."
iyaṅpunarasambhrāntānirudvignātarasvinī .

sēnārakṣatikākutsthaumayāprītyānivēditau ।।6.48.27।।


tarasvinī O lady given to austerities, iyam this, sēvāpunaḥ guarding, asambhrāntā confused, nirudvignā proclaimed, mayā by me, prītyā lovingly, nivēditau telling, kākutsthau Kakuthsa, rakṣati are safe.

"O Lady, given to austerities! These monkeys are guarding Kakuthsa as proclaimed by me lovingly. Do not be confused. They are safe."
sātvaṅbhavasuvisrabdhāanumānaissukhōdayaiḥ .

ahataupaśyakākutsthausnēhādētadbrravīmitē ।।6.48.28।।


sā he, tvam you, sukhōdayaiḥ the army, anumānaiḥ not doubtful, savisrabdhāḥ not perturbed, bhava you, ahatau not killed, kākutsthau Kakutsthas, paśya seeing, snēhāt lovingly, ētad all this, tē to you, bravīmi telling.

"This army is not doubting, not perturbed also, that they are killed. They are guarding the Kakutsthas lovingly. I am telling you."
anṛtaṅnōktapūrvaṅmēnacavakṣyēkadācana .

cāritrasukhaśīlatvāt praviṣṭāasimanaḥmama ।।6.48.29।।


nauktapūrvam not uttered earlier, nacavakṣyē nor tell a lie, kadācana indeed, cāritrasukhaśīlatvāt woman of good disposition, mama I am, manaḥ heartily, praviṣṭāasi found entry into my mind.

"I have not uttered untruth earlier nor shall I do now. Indeed, you have found entry into my mind being a woman of good disposition."
nēmauśakyāraṇējētuṅsēndrairapisurāsuraiḥ .

tādṛśaṅdarśanaṅdṛṣṭavāmayācāvēditaṅtava ।।6.48.30।।


imau these, sēndraiḥ Indra, surāsurairapi even Suras or Asuras also, raṇē in war, jētum to win, naśakyau not capable, tādṛśam indications of life, darśanam observation, dṛṣṭavā seeing, mayā by me, tava your, āvēditum making you to know.

"These two are not capable of being won in war even by gods or demons. On observation of the indications by me I am making you realize."
idaṅcasumahacacitraṅśaraiḥpaśyasvamaithili .

nissaṅjñāvapyubhāvētaunaivalakṣmīrvimuñcati ।।6.48.31।।


maithili Mythili, śaraiḥ arrows, nissaṅjñāvapi unconscious also, ubhau both, api indeed, ētau these, lakṣmīḥ prosperous, naivamuñcati body splendour not diminished, idam this, sumahat great, citram wonder, paśyasva you may see

"O Mythili! Even though both of them have fallen and unconscious under arrows their body splendour has not diminished. You may see."
prāyēṇagatasattvānāṅpuruṣāṇāṅgatāyuṣām .

dṛśyamānēṣuvaktrēṣuparaṅbhavativaikṛtam ।।6.48.32।।


prāyēṇa normally, gatāyuṣām ceased of life, gatasattvānām whose breathing has stopped, puruṣāṇām among men, dṛśyamānēṣu when we see, vaktrēṣu in features, param very, vaikṛtam unappealing, bhavati will be

"Normally when we see men who have ceased life and stopped breathing their features are unappealing."
tyajaśōkaṅcamōhaṅcaduḥkhaṅcajanakātmajē .

rāmalakṣmaṇayōrarthēnādyaśakyamajīvitum ।।6.48.33।।


janakātmajē Janaki, rāmalakṣmaṇayōḥ Rama and Lakshmana arthē both, śōkam sorrow, duḥkhaṅca and grief, mōhaṅca and delusion, tyaja giving up, adya get up, ajīvitum are alive, naśakyam not possible.

"O Janaka's daughter! You give up grief and delusion about Rama and Lakshmana. They are alive, no doubt."
śutvātuvacanaṅtasyāḥsītāsurasutōpamā .

kṛtāñjaliruvācēmāmēvamastvitimaithili ।।6.48.34।।


surasutōpamā equal to deities, maithilī Mythili, sītā Sita, tasyāḥ her, vacanam words of consolation, śrutvā hearing, kṛtājñaliḥ greeted with both palms together, ēvam in that way, as, iti thus, uvāca spoke.

Sita who was like deity, on hearing the words of consolation, spoken by Trijata, greeted Trijata with palms together.
vimānaṅpuṣpakaṅtattusannivartyamanōjavam .

dīnātrijaṭayāsītālaṅkāmēvapravēśitā ।।6.48.35।।


dīnā desperate, sītā Sita, trijaṭayā Trijata, manōjavam speed of mind, tat there, puṣpakaṅvimānam Pushpaka chariot, sannivartya turning, laṅkāmēva into Lanka, pravēśitā entered.

Then Trijata took Sita in the Pushpaka chariot endowed with the speed of mind and entered Lanka.
tatastrijaṭayāsārthaṅpuṣpakādavaruhyasā .

aśōkavanikāmēvarākṣasībhiḥpravēśitā ।।6.48.36।।


tataḥ thereafter, sā she, trijaṭayāsārtham along with Trijata, puṣpakāt in Pushpaka, anaruhya making to get down, rākṣasībhiḥ rakshasi also, aśōkavanikāmēva to Ashoka grove, pravēśitā entered.

Thereafter Sita along with Trijata went to Pushpaka. Making Sita to get down, rakshasi also entered Ashoka grove.
praviśyasītābahuvṛkṣaṣaṇḍāṅtāṅrākṣasēndrasyavihārabhūmim .

samprēkṣyasañcintyacarājaputrauparaṅviṣādaṅsamupājagāma ।।6.48.37।।


sītā Sita, bahuvṛkṣaṣaṇḍām with many trees, rākṣasēndrasya Rakshasa Lord's, vihārabhūmim pleasure garden, tām they, praviśya on entering, rājaputrau king's sons, samprēkṣya having keenly observed, sañcintyaca with intense agony, param very, viṣādam sad, upājagāma gave way.

Having entered the Rakshasa's pleasure garden which had many trees, Sita gave way to intense sorrow having keenly observed the king's sons.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēaṣṭacatvāriṅśassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the forty eighth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
