[Regaining consciousness, Rama wails at seeing Lakshmana.]

ghōrēṇaśarabandhēnabaddhaudaśarathātmajau .

niḥśvasantauyathānāgauśayānaurudhirōkṣitau ।।6.49.1।।

sarvētēvānaraśrēṣṭhāssasugrīvāmahābalāḥ .

parivāryamahātmānautasthuśśōkapariplutāḥ ।।6.49.2।।


sasugrīvāḥ that Sugriva, mahābalāḥ very powerful, sarvē all, tēvānaraśrēṣṭhāḥ best of Vanaras, ghōrēṇa horrible, śarabandhēna caught in network of arrows, baddhau bound, nāgauyathā like serpents, niḥśvasantau sighing, rudhirōkṣitau covered with blood, śayānau lying, mahātmānau great souls, daśarathātmajau Dasaratha's sons, parivārya surrounding, śōkapariplutāḥ immersed in sorrow, tasthuḥ were.

Sugriva, the very powerful one and all the best of Vanaras stood immersed in sorrow surrounding the great sons of Dasaratha, who were lying on the ground bound by a network of arrows like serpents, sighing, bodies covered with blood.
ētasminnantarērāmaḥpratyabudhyatavīryavān .

sthiratvātsattvayōgāccaśaraissandānitō.pisan ।।6.49.3।।


ētasmin antarē in the meantime, vīryavān heroic, rāmaḥ Rama, śaraiḥ arrows, sandānitō.pi although bound, sthiratvāt man of fortitude, sattvayōgāt ca and established in spiritual discipline, pratyabudhyata returned to consciousness.

tatōdṛṣṭavāsarudhiraṅniṣaṇṇaṅgāḍhamarpitam .

bhrātaraṅdīnavadanaṅparyadēvayadāturaḥ ।।6.49.4।।


tataḥ thereafter, sarudhiram the blood, viṣaṇṇam in agony, gāḍham severe, arpitam bound, dīnavadanam piteous countenance, bhrātaram brother, dṛṣṭavā seeing, āturaḥ injured, paryadēvayat lamented.

There after seeing the piteous countenance of his brother, bound, and injured, Rama lamented.
kiṅnumēsītayākāryaṅkiṅkāryaṅjīvitēnavā .

śayānaṅyō.dyapaśyāmibhrātaraṅyudhinirjitam ।।6.49.5।।


yaḥ of what, adya my use, yudhi in war, nirjitam lifeless, śayānam lying, bhrātaram brother, paśyāmi behold, mē my, sītayā Sita, kiṅnukāryam What accomplishment, jīvitēnavā even of life, kiṅkāryam of what use.

"Of what purpose is my life when I behold my brother lying lifeless in war? What do I have with Sita? Or even with my life?"
śakyāsītāsamānārīmartyalōkēvicinvatā .

nalakṣmaṇasamōbhrātāsacivassāmpaparāyikaḥ ।।6.49.6।।


martyalōkē mortal world, vicinvatā look for, sītāsamā equal to Sita, nārī woman, śakyā possible, sacivaḥ friend, sāmparāyikaḥ capable, lakṣmaṇasamaḥ Lakshmana like, bhrātā brother, na not.

"In a mortal world I can look for a woman like Sita but not possible to find a helpful and capable brother."
parityakṣāmyahaṅprāṇānvānarāṇāṅtupaśyātām .

yadipañcatvamāpannassumitrānandavardhanaḥ ।।6.49.7।।


sumitrānandavardhanaḥ Sumithra's dear son, pañcatvam killed/merging with five elements, āpannaḥ happens yadi if it, aham I, vānarāṇām Vanaras also, paśyatām as they behold, prāṇān life, parityakṣyāmi will give up life.

"If Sumithra's dear son gets merged with the five elements, I will give up my life as the Vanaras are beholding."
kiṅnuvakṣyāmikausalyāṅmātaraṅkiṅnukaikayīm .

kathamambāṅsumitrāṅcaputradarśanalālasām ।।6.49.8।।


mātaram mother, kausalyām to Kausalya, kiṅnuvakṣyāmi What can I say, kaikayīm to Kaikeyi, kiṅnu What to say, putradarśanalālasām waiting to see the son, ambām mother, sumitrām to Sumithra, katham What.

"What can I say to mother Kausalya, Kaikeyi and mother Sumithra waiting to see her son?"
vivatsāṅvēpamānāṅcakrōśantīṅkurarīmiva .

kathamāśvāsayiṣyāmiyadiyāsyāmitaṅvinā ।।6.49.9।।


taṅvinā without him, yāsyāmiyadi if I go, vivatsām without son, vēpamānāṅca and trembling, kurarīmiva a female osprey, krōśantīm crying aloud, katham how, āśvāsayiṣyāmi can console.

"If I go to Ayodhya without him, how can I console Sumithra crying aloud like a female osprey?"
kathaṅvakṣyāmiśatrughnaṅbharataṅcayaśasvinam .

mayāsahavanaṅyātōvinātēnāpunamāgataḥ ।।6.49.10।।


mayāsaha along with me, vanam forest, yātaḥ return, tēnavinā bereft of him, aham I, āgataḥ go, śatraghnam Satrughna, yaśasvinam of great fame, bharatam Bharata, katham how, vakṣyāmi can I say, punaḥ again.

"How can I return bereft of Lakshmana who went with me to the forest? What can I tell Satrughna, also the Bharata of great fame?"
upālambaṅnaśakṣyāmisōḍhuṅbatasumitrayā .

ihaivadēhaṅtyakṣyāminahijīvitumutsahē ।।6.49.11।।


bata tell, sumitrayā to Sumithra, upālambham endure, sōḍhum blame, naśakṣyāmi not tolerate, ihaiva here itself, dēham body, tyakṣyāmi will give up, jīvitum life, nautsahē not bear.

"If Sumithra asks me, I can't endure. I cannot bear it. I shall give up my body, my life here itself."
dhiṅmāṅduṣkṛtakarmāṇamanāryaṅmatkṛtēhyasau .

lakṣmaṇaḥpatitaśśētēśaratalpēgatāsuvat ।।6.49.12।।


duṣkṛtakarmāṇām of sinful deeds, anāryam not noble, mām me, dhik What a pity, matkṛtē by my action, asau Oh, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, patitaḥ sinful, gatāsuvat whose life has departed, śaratalpē on bed of arrows, śētēhi let him be burnt.

"What a pity! Me of sinful deeds and not a noble one, because of whose action Lakshmana's life having departed and lying on the bed of arrows."
tvaṅnityaṅsuviṣaṇṇaṅmāmāśvāsayasilakṣmaṇa .

gatāsurnādyaśaktō.simāmārtamabhibhāṣitum ।।6.49.13।।


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, tvam you were, nityam always, suviṣaṇṇam sad, mām me, āśvāsayasi comforted, adya now, gatāsuḥ ceased of life, ārtam grieved, mām me, abhibhāṣitum to comfort, śaktaḥ capable, nāsi not.

"You were always comforting me when I was sad. Now however much I am grieved, ceased of life you cannot comfort me."
yēnādyabahavōyuddhēnihatārākṣasāvinipātitāḥ .

tasyāmēvādyaśūrastvaṅśēṣēvinihataḥparaiḥ ।।6.49.14।।


yēna who, adya now, yuddhē in war, bahavaḥ many, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, vinipātitāḥ injured and thrown down, nihatāḥ struck down, śūraḥ by arrows, tvam such you, adya now, paraiḥ fallen, nihataḥ killed, tasyāmēva there itself, śēṣē unconscious.

"You, who have struck down many Rakshasas in war, are lying unconscious on the same ground struck by arrows."
śayānaḥśaratalpē.smin saśōṇitapariplutaḥ .

śarajālaicaśitōbhāsibhāskarō.stamivavrajan ।।6.49.15।।


śarajālaiḥ by the network of arrows, citaḥ lying, śōṇitapariplutaḥ blood flowing, asmin his, śaratalpē bed of arrows, śayānaḥ lying, saḥ he, astam his own, vrajan sinking, bhāskaraḥiva like the sun, bhāsi remains shining.

"Lying on the bed of arrows in the network of arrows, blood flowing out from the body he remains shining like the setting sun."
bāṇābhihatamarmatvānnaśaknōtyabhibhāṣitum .

rujācābruvatō.pyasyadṛṣṭirāgēṇasūcyatē ।।6.49.16।।


bāṇābhihatamarmatvāt struck in the vital parts by the arrows, abhibhāṣitum to speak, naśaknōti, abruvatō.pi not possible, asya his, rujā anguish, dṛṣṭirāgēṇa his looks, sūcyatē indicating.

"Struck in the vital parts by the arrows, it is not possible for you to speak, but your anguish is indicated in your looks."
yathaivamāṅvanaṅyāntamanuyātōmahādyutiḥ .

ahamapyanuyāsyāmitathaivainaṅyamakṣyam ।।6.49.17।।


mahādyutiḥ glowing in brightness, vanam forest, yāntam travelling, mām me, yathaiva with me, anuyātaḥ followed, tathaiva in the same way, ahamapi I will also, ēnam in that way, yamakṣyam abode of death, anuyāsyāmi will follow you.

"This Lakshmana glowing in brightness, travelled with me following me in the forest. In the same way I shall follow him to the abode of death."
iṣṭabandhujanōnityaṅmāṅcanityamanuvrataḥ .

imāmadyagatō.vasthāṅmamānāryasyadurnayaiḥ ।।6.49.18।।


nityam always, iṣṭabandhujanaḥ liked by relatives, nityam ever, mām me, anuvrataḥ following, anāryasya ignoble, mama me, durnayaiḥ devoted, adya now, imām such, avasthām state, gataḥ reached.

"He who was liked by relatives, was following ignoble me ever devoutly has reached this state."
suruṣṭēnāpivīrēṇalakṣmaṇēnanasaṅsmarē .

paruṣaṅvipriyaṅvāpiśrāvitaṅnakadācana ।।6.49.19।।


suruṣṭēnāpi even unpalatable, vīrēṇa heroic, lakṣmaṇēnavāpi by Lakshmana, kadācana indeed, paruṣam harsh, vipriyam deeply, śrāvitam invoked, nasaṅsmarē I do not remember.

"Indeed, heroic Lakshmana never uttered an unpalatable word. I do not remember him speaking harsh words even when he was deeply provoked."
visasarjaikavēgēnapañcabāṇaśatāniyaḥ .

iṣvastraṣvadhikastasmātkārtavīryāccalakṣmaṇaḥ ।।6.49.20।।


yaḥ he who, ēkavēgēna in one go, pañca five, bāṇaśatāni fund red arrows, visasarja released, tasmāt therefore, kārtavīryāt ca by Kartaveerya, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, iṣvastraṣu in discharging, adhikaḥ superior.

"He who, in one go released five hundred arrows (with two hand s) is therefore superior to Kartaveerya (with thousand hands) releasing the same arrows."
assrairastrāṇiyōhanyācchakrasyāpimahātmanaḥ .

sō.yamurvyāṅhataśśētēmahārhaśayanōcitaḥ ।।6.49.21।।


yaḥ he who, mahātmanaḥ great soul, śakrasya Indra's, astrāṇyapi arrows also, astraḥ arrows, hanyāt destroy, mahārhaśayanōcitaḥ deserve to be esteemed, saḥayam such a person, hataḥ killed, urvyām on the ground, śētē lying.

"He, who could destroy Indra's arrows also deserves to be on Indra's bed, is lying on the ground, killed."
taccamithyāpralaptaṅmāṅpradhakṣyatinasaṅśayaḥ .

yanmayānakṛtōrājārākṣasānāṅvibhīṣaṇaḥ ।।6.49.22।।


vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, mayā by my, yat those, rākṣasānām Rakshasas, nakṛtaḥ not done, tat therefore, mithyāpralaptam untruth utterance, mām me, pradhakṣyati consume, saṅśayaḥ doubt, na no.

"I have not made Vibheeshana as the king of Rakshasas. Because of that untruth utterance they want to consume me, no doubt."
asminmuhūrtēsugrīva pratiyātumitō.rhasi .

matvāhīnaṅrājan rāvaṇō.bhidravēdbalī ।।6.49.23।।


sugrīva Sugriva, asmin his, muhūrtē time, itaḥ from here, pratiyātum return back, arhasi I think, rājan king, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, mayā by me, hīnam weak, matvā chase, balī strong, abravēt said.

"Sugriva! You return back from here now. Strong Ravana will chase you because of my not being here."
aṅgadaṅtupuraskatyasasainyassaparicchadam .

sāgaraṅtarasugrīva nīlēnacanalēnaca ।।6.49.24।।


sugrīva Sugriva, sasainyam with army, saparicchadam along with all, aṅgadam Angada, puraskṛtya keeping in front, nīlēnaca even Neela, nalēnaca and Nala, samudram ocean, tara you may cross.

"Sugriva! Return back from here along with the army keeping Angada in front, even Neela and Nala. Cross the ocean."
kṛtaṅhanumatākāryaṅyadanyairduṣkaraṅraṇē .

ṛkṣarājēnatuṣyāmigōlāṅgūlādhipēnaca ।।6.49.25।।


ṛkṣarājēna king of Bears, gōlāṅgūlādhipēna king of Golangulas, Gavaksha, raṇē in war, yat by you, anyaiḥ others, duṣkaram difficult, hanumatā Hanumantha, kāryaṅ in action, kṛtaṅhi has done, tuṣyāmi pleased.

"O King of Bears! King of Golangulas! Difficult action has been done by you and others in war. I am pleased with Hanumantha's action."
aṅgadēnakṛtaṅkarmamaindēnadvividēnaca .

yuddhaṅkēsariṇāsaṅ khyēghōraṅsampātinākṛtam ।।6.49.26।।


aṅgadēna by Angada, maindēna Mainda, dvividēnaca by Dwivida, karma action, kṛtam done, saṅ khyē Vanaras kēsariṇā Kesari, sampātinā Sampathi, ghōram formidable, yuddham war, kṛtam was done.

"Formidable war was done by Angada, Mainda, Dwivida, and by all the Vanaras, Kesari and Sampathi."
gavayēnagavākṣēṇaśarabhēṇagajēnaca .

anyaiścaharibhiryuddhaṅmadarthētyaktajīvitaiḥ ।।6.49.27।।


gavayēna Gava, gavākṣēṇa by Gavaksha, śarabhēṇa By Sarabha, gajēna Gaja, madarthē and others, tyaktajīvitaiḥ sacrificing their lives, anyaiḥ others, haribhiśca even Vanaras, yuddham in war.

"Gava, Gavaksha, Sarabha and others even Vanaras have done war sacrificing their lives for me."
nacātikramituṅśakyaṅdaivaṅsugrīva mānuṣaiḥ .

yattuśakyaṅvayasyēnasuhṛdācaparantapa ।।6.49.28।।

kṛtaṅsugrīva tatsarvaṅbhavatādharmabhīruṇā .


sugrīva Sugriva, mānuṣaiḥ in human beings, daivam god, atikramitum to overcome, nacaśakyam not possible, parantapa scorcher of enemies, sugrīva Sugriva, suhṛdā best friend, vayasyēna by you, yattu that which, śakyam not possible, tat that, sarvam all, dharmabhīruṇā righteously, tvayā by you, kṛtam was done.

"Sugriva! It is not possible for human beings to overcome God (destiny). O scorcher of enemies! Sugriva, my best friend, you have all done righteously that which is not possible."
mitrakāryaṅkṛtamidaṅbhavadbhirvānararṣabhāḥ ।।6.49.29।।

anujñātāmayāsarvēyathēṣṭaṅgantumarhatha .


vānararṣabhāḥ bulls among Vanaras, bhavadbhi: by me permitted, idam this, mitrakāryam friend's work, kṛtam done, sarvē all, mayā by me, anujñātāḥ you should go, yathēṣṭam where you wish to, gantum you may go, arhatha I permit.

"O Bulls among Vanaras! All of you should go permitted by me. You have done friend's work. You may go where you wish to go. I permit said Rama."
śuśruvustasyatēsarvēvānarāḥparidēvanam ।।6.49.30।।

vartayāñcakrūraśrūṇinētraiḥkṛṣṇētarēkṣaṇāḥ .


sarvē all, yē you, vānarāḥ, Vanaras tasya their, paridēvatam lamentation, śuśruvuḥ tears, kṛṣṇētarēkṣaṇāḥ tawny eyes, nētraiḥ eyes, aśrūṇi tears, vartayāñcakru: started shedding.

All the Vanaras started shedding tears from their tawny eyes on listening to the lamentation of Rama.
tatassarvāṇyanīkānisthāpayitvāvibhīṣaṇaḥ ।।6.49.31।।

ājagāmagadāpāṇistvaritaṅyatrarāghavaḥ .


tataḥ thereafter, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, sarvāṇi all, anīkāni many, sthāpayitvā settled, gadāpāṇiḥ mace, rāghavaḥ Raghava, yatra there, tvaritam hastily, ājagāma reached.

Thereafter, Vibheeshana, settling all the army, hastened to reach Raghava with a mace.
taṅdṛṣṭavātvaritaṅyāntaṅnīlāñjanacayōpamam ।।6.49.32।।

vānarādudruvussarvēmanyamānāsturāvaṇim .


tvaritam quickly, yāntam all, nīlāñjanacayōpamam like a dark mountain, tam him, dṛṣṭavā seeing, sarva all, vānarāḥ Vanaras, rāvaṇim Ravana's son, manyamānāḥ thinking, dudruvuḥ ran away.

Seeing Vibheeshana resembling a dark mountain, thinking him to be Indrajith, all the Vanaras ran from there.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēēkōnapañcāśassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the forty ninth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
