[Rama is reminded of Sita while talking to Lakshmana and gets immersed in grief.]

sātunīlēnavidhivatsvārakṣāsusamāhitā .

sāgarasyōttarētīrēsādhusēnānivēśitā ।।6.5.1।।


nīlēna: by Nila, vidhivat: as per tradition, svārakṣā: their guard, susamāhitā: collected there, sā: that, sēnā: army, sāgarasya: at the sea, uttarētīrē: northern shore, sādhu: successfully, nivēśitā: made to reside

Nila settled the army successfully by making them reside on the northern shore of the sea, as per tradition.
maindaścadvividaścōbhautatravānarapuṅgavau .

vicēratuścatāṅsēnāṅrakṣārthaṅsarvatōdiśam ।।6.5.2।।


tatra: then, vānarapuṅgavau: the best of the vanaras, maindaśca: Mainda and, dvividaścaiva: with Dwivida, ubhau: both, rakṣārtham: for safeguarding, sarvatōdiśam: in all directions, tāṅsēnām: that army, vicēratuḥ moving about

Dwivida and Mainda, the best of the vanaras, went about in all directions for safeguarding the army.
niviṣṭāyāṅtusēnāyāṅtīrēnadanadīpatēḥ .

pārśvasthaṅlakṣmaṇaṅdṛṣṭavārāmōvacanamabravīt ।।6.5.3।।


nadanadīpatēḥ lord of rivers and streams (the ocean), tīrē: shore, sēnāyām: when the army, niviṣṭāyām: after having settled down, rāmaḥ Rama, pārśvastham: beside, lakṣmaṇam: at Lakshmana, dṛṣṭavā: seeing, vacanam: these words, abravīt: spoke

After the army had settled down on the shores of the lord of rivers (sea), Rama spoke to Lakshmana who stood beside him.
śōkaścakilakālēnagacchatāhyapagacchati .

mamacāpaśyataḥkāntāmahanyahanivardhatē ।।6.5.4।।


śōkaḥ grief, gacchatā: goes, kālēna: as time passes, apagacchatikila: indeed progressing, kāntām: beloved, apaśyataḥ unable to see, mamaca: for me, ahanyahani: day by day, vardhatē: increases

As time passes, grief passes away. However my sorrow is progressing day by day being unable to see my beloved.
namēduḥkhaṅpriyādūrēnamēduḥkhaṅhṛtētivā .

ētadēvānuśōcāmivayō.syāhyativartatē ।।6.5.5।।


priyā: beloved, dūrē: at distance, mē: my, duḥkham: grief, na: not, hṛtētiga: is abducted, vāmē: or my, duḥkham: sorrow, na: not, asyāḥ her, vayaḥ age, ativartatēhi: advancing, ētadēva: on this account, anuśōcāmi: I am feeling

There is no grief in me that my beloved is at a distance, nor that she is taken away. Indeed her age is advancing. On this account I am feeling for her.
vāhivātayataḥkāntātāṅspṛṣṭavāmāmapispṛśa .

tvayimēgātrasaṅsparśaścandrēdṛṣṭisamāgamaḥ ।।6.5.6।।


vāta: oh! Wind, kāntā: beloved, yataḥ that place, vāhi: carry, tām: her, spṛṣṭavā: touched, māmapi: me too, spṛśa: touch, mē: my, gātrasaṅsparśaḥ beloved's touch of my body like, tvayi: by you, dṛṣṭisamāgamaḥ contact with eyes, candrē: through moon

O Wind! Touch that place where my beloved is and touch me as it will give me the same feeling as my beloved's touch. Through the moon I will get her eye contact too.
tanmēdahatigātrāṇiviṣaṅpītamivāśayē .

hānāthētipriyāsāmāṅhriyamāṇāyadabravīt ।।6.5.7।।


hriyamāṇā: being carried away, sāpriyā: she my beloved, hā nātha iti: saying 'Ha beloved', abravīt: uttered itiyat: this at that time, tat: then, pītam: drunk, viṣam iva: like poison, āśayē: my stomach, mē: me, gātrāṇi: my body, dahati: is burning

While being carried away that beloved of mine would have cried aloud saying 'oh! my lord'. This thought is burning my body as though I have consumed poison in my stomach.
tadviyōgēndhanavatātaccintāvipulārciṣā .

rātriṅdivaṅśarīraṅmēdahyatēmadanāgninā ।।6.5.8।।


tadviyōgēndhanavatā: the separation from her as fuel, taccintā: the thought about her, vipulārciṣā: extensive flames, madanāgninā: by the fire of love, mē: my, śarīram: body, rātriṅdivam: day and night, dahyatē: is burning

The pain of separation from her is working as fuel and the thought about hers is engulfing me as extensive flame and burning my body day and night.
avagāhyarṇavaṅsvapsyēsaumitrēbhavatāvinā .

kathañcitprajvalankāmassamāṅsuptaṅjalēdahēt ।।6.5.9।।


saumitrē: O Saumitri!, sabhavatāvinā: without you, arṇavam: into the ocean, avagāhya: plunging, svapsyē: will lie down, kathañcit: probably, jalē: in water, suptam: be sleeping, mām prajvalan: to burn me, kāmaḥ god of love, nadahēt: will not be able to consume me

O Saumitri! Plunging into water alone I will lie down. Probably then the god of love will not be able to consume me while sleeping.
bahvētatkāmayānasyaśakyamētēnajīvitum .

yadahaṅsācavāmōrūrēkāṅdharaṇimāśritau ।।6.5.10।।


aham: I, sā: her, vāmōrūḥca: of charming thighs, ēkām: one, dharaṇim: land, āśritauitiyat: this way seeking refuge, kāmayānasya: desiring, bahu: very much, ētēna: because of that, jīvitum: survival, śakyam: will be possible

Me and Sita are seeking refuge on the same land indeed. Because of that only survival is possible for me, who is desiring for her very much.
kēdārasyēvakēdārassōdakasyanirūdakaḥ .

upasnēhēnajīvāmijīvantīṅyacchṛṇōmitām ।।6.5.11।।


tām: she, jīvantīm: is living yat: that, śṛṇōmi: I hearing, sōdakasya: with water, kēdārasya: like a paddy field, upasnēhēna: getting wet, nirūdakaḥ without water, kēdāraḥivajīvāmi: am living like crop with water

I am living only because of hearing about her survival, just as a paddy field without water gets wet by the proximity of a neighboring paddy field with water.
kadānukhalusuśrōṇīṅśatapattrāyatēkṣaṇām .

vijityaśatrūndrakṣyāmisītāsphītāmivaśriyam ।।6.5.12।।


śatrūn: enemies, vijitya: winning, suśrōṇīm: lady with charming limbs, śatapatrāyatēkṣaṇām: of large beautiful eyes like lotus petals, sphītām: abundance of, śriyamiva: like fortune, sītām: Sita, kadānukhalu: when indeed, drakṣyāmi: will be able to see

When will I be able to win the enemies and see that Sita of charming limbs, with large and beautiful eyes like lotus petals, who is like an abundance of fortune?
kadānucārubimbōṣṭhaṅtasyāḥpadmamivānanam .

īṣadunnamyapāsyāmirasāyanamivāturaḥ ।।6.5.13।।


cārubimbōṣṭham: beautiful lips like Bimba fruit, padmamiva: lotus like, tasyāḥ her, ānanam: face, īṣat: slightly, unnāmya: lifting, āturaḥ one who is afflicted, rasāyanamiva: like a sweet drink, kadā: when, pāsyāmi: shall I drink?

I do not know when I will lift her lotus-like face slightly and drink her beautiful lips like an afflicted man drinks sweet juice.
tasyāttusaṅhitaupīnaustanautālaphalōpamau .

kadānukhalusōtkampauśliṣyantyāmāṅbhajiṣyata: ।।6.5.14।।


śilaṣyayantyā: desire to cling to, tasyāḥ her, sahitau: along with, tupīnau: that plump, tālaphalōpamau: like the Palmyra fruit, sōtkampau: eagerly, tau: those, stanau: breasts, mām: me, kadākhalu: when indeed, bhajiṣyatha: will I enjoy

I am eager to cling to her Palmyra fruits like plumpy breasts. Indeed when will I enjoy her embrace?
sānūnamasitāpāṅgīrakṣōmadhyagatāsatī .

mannāthānāthahīnēvatrātāraṅnādhigacchati ।।6.5.15।।


asitāpāṅgī: lady of dark eyes, mannādhā: has me as her lord, sā: she, rakṣōmadhyagatā: in the midst of Rakshasas, satī: wife, nūnam: surely, nāthahīnēva: emaciated being away from husband, trātāram: protector, nādhigacchati: not getting

That dark-eyed lady (Sita), even though she has me (husband), is in the midst of rakshasas. Surely she is sad and emaciated being away from her husband, without a protector.
kathaṅjanakarajasyaduhitāmamacapriyā .

rākṣasīmadhyagāśētēsnuṣādaśarathasyaca ।।6.5.16।।


janakarājasya: king Janaka's, duhitā: daughter, mamapriyā: my beloved wife, daśarathasya: Dasaratha's, snuṣā: daughter-in-law, rākṣasīmadhyagā: in the midst of rakshasas, katham: how, śētē: sleeping

My beloved is king Janaka's daughter and daughter-in-law of Dasaratha. Yet she is sleeping amid Rakshasas. How is it?
kadā.vikṣōbhyarakṣāṅsisāvidhūyōtpatiṣyati .

vidhūyajaladānnīlān śaśirēkhāśaratsviva ।।6.5.17।।


kadā: when will, śaratstuiva: like in autumn season, śaśirēkhā: crescent moon, nīlān: dark, jaladān: clouds, vidhūyaiva: like pushing, sā: she, avikṣōbhya: unshakeable, rakṣāṅsi: Rakshasas, vidhūya: pushing, utpatiṣyati: will come out

When will she come out pushing the Rakshasas like the crescent moon comes out pushing the dark clouds in autumn?
svabhāvatanukānūnaṅśōkēnānaśanēnaca .

bhūyastanutarāsītādēśakālaviparyayāt ।।6.5.18।।


svabhāvatanukā: by nature slim, sītā: Sita, dēśakālaviparyayāt: due to unfavorable time and space, śōkēna: in grief, anaśanēna: due to abstaining from eating, nūnam: surely, bhūyaḥ would be, tanutarā: slender

Sita who is by nature slim would surely be slender due to abstaining from eating, unfavorable time and location.
kadānurākṣasēndrasyanidhāyōrasisāyakān .

sītāṅpratyāhariṣyāmiśōkamutsṛjyamānasam ।।6.5.19।।


rākṣasēndrasya: rakshasa king's, nidhāyōrasi: into the chest, sāyakān: arrows, sītāṅ: Sita, pratyāhariṣyāmi: will get back, śōkamutsṛjya: casting off grief, mānasam: from my mind, kadānu: indeed

Indeed by shooting arrows into the chest of rakshasa king, when will I get back Sita and cast off grief from my mind.
kadānukhalumāṅsādhvīsītāsurasutōpamā .

sōtkaṇṭhākaṇṭhamālambyamōkṣyatyānandajaṅjalam ।।6.5.20।।


sādhvī: chaste woman, surasutōpamā: like the daughter of the gods, sītā: Sita, sōtkaṇṭhā: with an excited longing, mām: me, kaṇṭham: neck, ālambya clinging, kadākhalu: indeed, ānandajam: of joy, jalam: water(here tears), mōkṣyati: will shed

When will Sita, the chaste woman, who is like the daughter of Gods, cling to my neck, and indeed shed tears of joy?
kadāśōkamimaṅghōraṅmaithilīviprayōgajam .

sahasāvipramōkṣyāmivāsaśśuklētaraṅyathā ।।6.5.21।।


maithilī: Mythili, viprayōgajam: born out of separation, ghōram: terrible, imam: this, śōkam: grief, śuklētaram: soiled, vāsaḥyathā: like a garment, kadā: when, sahasā: suddenly, vipramōkṣyāmi: shall I abandon

When will I get rid of this terrible grief of separation from Mythili for good, just like discarding a soiled garment?
ēvaṅvilapatastasyatatrarāmasyadhīmataḥ .

dinakṣayānmandavapurbhāskarō.stamupāgataḥ ।।6.5.22।।


dhīmataḥ sagacious, tasya: his, rāmasya: Rama's, tatra: there, ēvam: in that way, vilapataḥ wailing, dinakṣayāt: due to the ending of the day, mandavapuḥ dim, bhāskaraḥ sun's light, astam: west, upāgataḥ descended

While sagacious Rama was wailing in that way the day came to an end with the sun descending to the west.
āśvāsitōlakṣmaṇēnarāmassandhyāmupāsata .

smarankamalapatrākṣīṅsītāṅśōkākulīkṛtaḥ ।।6.5.23।।


kamalapatrākṣīm: lotus petal eyed, sītām: Sita, smaran: remembering, śōkākulīkṛtaḥ distracted with grief, rāmaḥ Rama, lakṣmaṇēna: by Lakshmana, āśvāsitaḥ comforted, sandhyām: evening prayers, upāsata: set in

Remembering the lotus petal eyed Sita, Rama who was distracted with grief, comforted by Lakshmana offered evening prayers.
।।ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddakāṇḍēpañcamassargaḥ।।
