Sloka & Translation

[Ravana comes to know that Rama and Lakshmana are released from the bondage. Disappointed by the news Ravana sends Dhumraksha to fight with Rama and Lakshmana.]

tēṣāṅsutumulaṅśabdaṅvānarāṇāṅtarasvinām .

nardatāṅrākṣasaissārdhaṅtadāśuśrāvarāvaṇaḥ ।।6.51.1।।


tadā then, tarasvinām courageous, nardatām increasing, tēṣāṅvānarāṇām by those Vanaras, sutumulam tumultuous noise, śabdam sound, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, rākṣasaiḥsārdham all Rakshasas, śuśrāva heard.

Then Ravana and all the Rakshasas heard the increasing and highly tumultuous sound made by the courageous Vanaras.
snigdhagambhīranirghōṣaṅśrutvāsaninadaṅbhṛśam .

sacivānāṅtatastēṣāṅmadhyēvacanamabravīt ।।6.51.2।।


tataḥ thereafter, saḥ he, snigdhagambhīranirghōṣam deep and loud sound, ninadam roaring, bhṛśam swiftly, śrutvā having heard, tēṣām to them, sacivānām ministers, madhyē midst, vacanam words, abravīt spoke.

Thereafter, hearing the loud and deep sounds of roaring and seeing his (Ravana's) ministers in the midst, he spoke as follows.
yathā.sausamprahṛṣṭānāṅvānarāṇāṅsamutthitaḥ .

bahūnāṅsumahānnādōmēghanāmivagarjitām ।।6.51.3।।

vyaktaṅsumahatīprītirētēṣāṅnātrasaṅśayaḥ .

tathāhivipulairnādaiścukṣubhēvaruṇālayaḥ ।।6.51.4।।


samprahṛṣṭānām very happy, bahūnām many of them, vānarāṇām Vanaras, samutthita collected:, sumahān very great, asau such, nādaḥ sound, garjatām roaring, mēghānāmiva like thunder of rumbling clouds, yathā just as, śrūyatē, suvyaktam , ētēṣām by that, prītiḥ happiness, sumahatī huge, atra there, saṅśayaḥ doubt, na no, tathāhi for that reason, vipulaiḥ wide, nādaiḥ noise, varuṇālayaḥ ocean, cukṣubhē agitated.

"Many Vanaras have collected together and roared making loud noises just as thunder rumbling clouds. By that there is no doubt that they are very happy. For that reason, even the wide ocean is agitated."
tautubaddhauśaraistīkṣṇairbhrātaraurāmalakṣmaṇau .

ayaṅcasumahānnādaśaṅkāṅjanayatīvamē ।।6.51.5।।


bhrātarau brothers, taurāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, tīkṣṇaiḥ sharp, śaraiḥ arrows, baddhau are bound, sumahān great, ayaṅnādaḥ such sound I hear, mē to me, śaṅkām doubt, janayatīva in my mind.

"The two brothers Rama and Lakshmana are bound by sharp arrows. By the loud noise that I hear I doubt in my mind!"
ētattuvacanaṅcōktvāmantriṇōrākṣasēśvaraḥ .

uvācanairṛtāṅstatrasamīpaparivartinaḥ ।।6.51.6।।


rākṣasēśvaraḥ Lord of Rakshasas, mantriṇaḥ to ministers, ētattu such, vacanam words, tu you, uktvā having spoken, tatra there, samīpaparivartinaḥ waiting near, nairṛtān to Rakshasas, uvāca said.

Having spoken like that to the ministers, the Lord of Rakshasas said to the Rakshasas who stood waiting close by.
jñāyatāṅtūrṇamētēṣāṅsarvēṣāṅcavanacāriṇām .

śōkakālēsamutpannaharṣakāraṇamutthitam ।।6.51.7।।


ētēṣām for what reason, sarvēṣām all of them, vanacāriṇām rangers of woods, śōkakālē in the time for grief, samutpanna arisen, tūrṇam speedily, harṣakāraṇamutthitam reason for rejoicing, jñāyatām be found out.

"For what reason are the Vanaras (rangers of woods) rejoicing that way in the time of grief? It may be found out speedily."
tathōktāstēnasambhrāntāḥprākāramadhiruhyaca .

dadṛśuḥpālitāṅsēnāṅsugrīvēṇamahātmanā ।।6.51.8।।

taucamuktausughōrēṇaśarabandhēnarāghavau .

samutthitaumahābhāgauviṣēduḥprēkṣyarākṣasāḥ ।।6.51.9।।


tathā as, uktāḥ having said, tē his, nasambhrāntāḥ bewildered, prākāram the boundary wall, adhiruhya scaling, mahātmanā great, sugrīvēṇa to Sugriva, pālitām protected by, sēnām army, sughōrēṇa at a distance, śarabandhēna bound by arrows, muktau relieved, samutthitau happy, mahābhāgau prosperous, taurāghavau them, the Raghavas, dadṛśuḥ beheld, prēkṣarākṣasāḥ Rakshasas saw, viṣēduḥ worried.

Ravana having said so, the bewildered Rakshasas scaling the boundary wall beheld the army protected by great Sugriva and the prosperous Raghavas relieved from arrows and happy, he became worried.
santrastahṛdayāḥsarvēprākārāt varuhyatē .

viṣaṇṇavadanāghōrārākṣasēndramupasthitā ।।6.51.10।।


ghōrāḥ dreadful, sarvē all, tēvadanāḥ their countenance, santrastahṛdayāḥ frightened at heart, viṣaṇṇāḥ pale faces, prākārāt boundary, avaruhya getting down, rākṣasēndram to the Lord of Rakshasas, upasthitāḥ reached.

All the dreadful Rakshasas getting down the boundary wall with pale faces, sad countenance reached the Lord of Rakshasas.
tadapriyaṅdīnamukhārāvaṇasyaniśācarāḥ .

kṛtsnaṅnivēdayāmāsuryathāvadvākyakōvidāḥ ।।6.51.11।।


vākyakōvidāḥ capable of talking, niśācarāḥ Rakshasas, dīnamukhāḥ desperate, apriyam unpleasant, tat those, kṛtsnam dark, yathāvat as it is, rāvaṇasya to Ravana, nyavēdayan presented.

Rakshasas who were well versed in talking, desperately conveyed the unpleasantness as it is to Ravana.
yautāvindrajitāyuddhēbhrātaraurāmalakṣmaṇau .

nibaddhauśarabandhēnaniṣprakampabhujaukṛtau ।।6.51.12।।

vimuktauśarabandhēnadṛśyētētauraṇājirē .

pāśānivagajauchitvāgajēndrasamavikramau ।।6.51.13।।


yuddhē in the battlefield, indrajitā by Indrajith, bhrātarau brothers, yau those, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, śarabandhēna from the bondage of arrows, nibaddhau have been set free, niṣprakampabhujau shoulders relieved, kṛtau done, gajēndrasamavikramau powerful elephants, tau they, pāśān rope, chitvā snapped, gajauiva like elephants, raṇājirē like elephant heroes, dṛśyētē are seen.

"The two brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, who are like powerful elephants have been set free from the bondage of arrows of Indrajith in the battlefield. Their shoulders are relieved and are like elephants snapped off the rope binding them."
tacchrutvāvacanaṅtēṣāṅrākṣasēndrōmahābalaḥ .

cintārōṣasamākrāntōviṣaṇṇavadanō.bhavat ।।6.51.14।।


mahābalaḥ of mighty prowess, rākṣasēndraḥ Rakshasa king, tēṣām by that, tat vacanam those words, śrutvā hearing, cintārōṣasamākrāntaḥ very worried and enraged, viṣaṇṇavadanaḥ pale face, abhavat remained.

The Rakshasa king endowed with mighty prowess became pale in face, worried and enraged on hearing the words of Rakshasas.
ghōrairdattavarairbhaddhauśarairāśīviṣōpamaiḥ .

amōghaissūryasaṅkāśaiḥpramathyēndrajitāyudhi ।।6.51.15।।

tadastrabandhamāsādyayadimuktauripūmama .

saṅśayasthamidaṅsarvamanupaśyāmyahaṅbalam ।।6.51.16।।


ghōraiḥ dreadful, dattavaraiḥ blessed with boons, āśīviṣōpamaiḥ like sharp poisonous snakes, amōghaiḥ amazing, sūryasaṅkāśaiḥ bright like the sun, śaraiḥ arrows, yudhi in battle, pramadhya violently, indrajitā by Indrajith, baddhau bound by, mamaripū our enemies, tat that, astrabandham bondage by the arrows, āsādya formidable, muktauyadi to liberate, idam this, sarvam everything, balam army, saṅśayastham doubt, aham I am, anupaśyāmi perceive.

"My enemies who are bound by the formidable and unfailing, sharp, poisonous and bright arrows like the sun of Indrajith blessed with boons, are liberated from the bondage! I doubt if my army is in danger!"
niṣphalāḥkhalusamvṛttāśśarāḥvāsukitējasaḥ .

adattaṅyaistusaṅgrāmēripūṇāṅjīvitaṅmama ।।6.51.17।।


taiḥ they, saṅgrāmē in battlefield, mama me, ripūṇām enemies, jīvitam life, adattam taken away, vāsukitējasaḥ of equal brilliance as Vasuki, śarāḥ arrows, niṣphalāḥ wasted, samvṛttāḥkhalu become in fructuous now.

"My arrows which are equal in brilliance to Vasuki by which my enemies' life was taken away has become in fructuous now."
ēvamuktvātusaṅkruddhōniśśvasannuragōyathā .

abravīdrakṣasāṅmadhyēdhūmrākṣaṅnāmarākṣasam ।।6.51.18।।


ēvam in that way, uktvā having said, saṅkruddhaḥ enraged, yathā just like, niśśvasan hissing, rakṣasām Rakshasa, madhyē midst, dhūmrākṣaṅnāma called Dhumraksha, rākṣasam Rakshasa, abravīt said.

Having said so, hissing Ravana called Dhumraksha to the midst.
balēnamahatāyuktōrākṣasairbhīmavikramaḥ .

tvaṅvadhāyābhiniryāhirāmasyasahavānaraiḥ ।।6.51.19।।


bhīmavikramaḥ of fierce prowess, tvam you, mahatā huge, balēna army, rākṣasaiḥ of Rakshasas, yuktaḥ able, vānaraiḥsaha along with Vanaras, rāmasya and Rama also, vadhāya destroying, abhi now, niryāhi commanded.

"Dhumraksha of fierce prowess, you along with a huge Rakshasa army go just now to destroy Rama along with able Vanaras."
ēvamuktastudhūmrākṣōrākṣasēndrēṇadhīmatā .

kṛtvāpraṇāmaṅsamhṛṣṭōnirjagāmanṛpālayat ।।6.51.20।।


dhīmatā Intelligent, rākṣasēndrēṇa by the Lord of Rakshasas, ēvam in that manner, uktaḥ ordered by, dhūmrākṣaḥ Dhumraksha, praṇām prayers, kṛtvā having offered, nṛpālayat from the king, samhṛṣṭa: joyful, nirjagāma went from there.

Commanded by the Intelligent king of Rakshasas in that manner, Dhumraksha offered prayers and went from there joyfully.
abhiniṣkramyatadadvāraṅbalādhyakṣamuvācaha .

tvarayasvabalaṅtūrṇaṅkiṅcirēṇayuyutsataḥ ।।6.51.21।।


tad thereafter, dvāram from the gateway, abhiniṣkramya went from there, balādhyakṣam commander inchief of the army, uvācaha said so, tūrṇam Instantly, balam army, yuyutsataḥ get ready, tvarayasva speedily, cirēṇa delay, kim why.

There after Dhumraksha went from the gateway and said to the Commander-in-Chief of the army" Get ready immediately and start quickly. Why delay?"
dhūmrākṣavacanaṅśrutvābalādhyakṣōbalānugaḥ .

balamudyōjayāmāsarāvaṇasyājñayādrutam ।।6.51.22।।


balānugaḥ large army contingent, balādhyakṣaḥ Commander-in-Chief of army, dhūmrākṣavacanam Dhumraksha's words, śrutvā on hearing, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, ājñayā by the order, drutam quickly, balam army, udyōjayāmāsa got ready.

On hearing the words of Dhumraksha, the Commander-in-Chief of the large army, he got ready quickly by the order of Ravana.
tēbaddhaghaṇṭābalinōghōrarūpāniśācarāḥ .

vigarjamānāssamhṛṣṭādhūmrākṣaṅparyavārayan ।।6.51.23।।


baddhaghaṇṭāḥ bound with girdles of bells, balinaḥ mighty, ghōrarūpāḥ of fierce, tēniśācarāḥ the Rakshasa, vigarjamānā roaring, samhṛṣṭāḥ joyfully, dhūmrākṣam with Dhumraksha, paryavārayan surrounded.

Mighty army bound with girdles of bells to their waist, of fierce form roaring surrounded Dhumraksha joyfully.
vividhāyudhahastāścaśūlamudgarapāṇayaḥ .

gadābhiḥpaṭṭasairdaṇḍairāyasairmusalairbhṛśam ।।6.51.24।।

parighairbhiṇḍivālaiścabhallaiprāsai: paraśvathai: .

niryayūrākṣasādibhyōnardhantōjaladāyathā ।।6.51.25।।


jaladāyathā like rain clouds, nardantaḥ roaring, ghōrāḥ dreadful, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, vividhāyudhahastāśca holding different kinds of weapons, śūlamudgarapāṇayaḥ tridents, spikes, gadābhiḥ maces too, paṭṭasai: iron spears, daṇḍaiḥ rods, āyasaiḥ armour, musalairapi even clubs, parighaiḥ iron bars, bhiṇḍivāpālaiśca slings use for hurling stones, bhallaiḥ arrows, prāsai: darts, paraśvadhaiḥ in thousands, niryayuḥ set out.

The dreadful Rakshasas set out roaring like rain clouds armed with different kinds of weapons, like tridents, darts, maces, spears, iron bars, rods, even clubs, spears and slings, arrows in thousands.
rathaiḥkavacinastvanyēdhvajaiścasamalaṅkṛtaiḥ .

suvarṇajālavihitaiḥkharaiścavividhānanaiḥ ।।6.51.26।।

hayaiḥparamaśīghraiścagajaiścaivamadōtkaṭaiḥ .

niryayurnairṛtavyāghrāvyāghrāivadurāsadāḥ ।।6.51.27।।


anyē and others, kavacinaḥ holding shields, dhvajaiḥ flags, samalaṅkṛtaiḥ collected together, suvarṇajālavihitaiḥ with golden mesh, vividhānanaiḥ many kinds, kharaiśca donkeys, rathaiḥ chariots, paramaśīghraiḥ very fast, hayaiśca horses also, madōtkaṭaiḥ maddened, gajaiścaiva and elephants, vyāghrāḥiva like tigers, and horses durāsadāḥ frightful, niryayurnairṛtavyāghrā fearless like tigers, niryayuḥ set out.

And others collected together holding shields, fearless like tigers, frightful in appearance, mounted on fast horses, chariots yoked to donkeys of different kinds covered with gold mesh, on maddened elephants Set out.
vṛkasiṅhamukhairyuktaṅkharaiḥkanakabhūṣaṇai: .

ārurōharathaṅdivyaṅdhūmrākṣaḥkharanissvanaḥ ।।6.51.28।।


kharaniḥsvanaḥ of frightful tone, dhūmrākṣaḥ Dhumraksha, vṛkasiṅhamukhaiḥ having faces like lion and bear, kanakabhūṣaṇai: adorned with gold, kharaiḥ donkeys, yuktam yoked, divyam awesome, ratham chariots, ārurōha mounted.

Dhumraksha of frightful tone mounted on a chariot adorned with gold yoked to donkeys with lion and bear like faces.
saniryātōmahāvīryōdhūmrākṣōrākṣasairvṛtaḥ .

prahasanpaścimadvāraṅhanumānyatrayūthapaḥ ।।6.51.29।।


mahāvīryaḥ heroic, saḥdhūmrākṣaḥ Dhumraksha, rākṣasaiḥ Rakshasas, vṛtaḥ surrounded by, prahasan laughing, yatra there, hanūmān Hanuman, yūdhapaḥ taken position, paścimadvāraṅ west gate, niryātaḥ set forth.

rathapravaramāsthāyakharayuktaṅkharasvanam .

prayāntaṅtumahāghōraṅrākṣasaṅbhīmadarśanam ।।6.51.30।।

antarikṣagatāḥghōrāśakunāḥpratyaṣēdhayan .


kharayuktam yoked to donkeys, kharasvanam braying like donkeys, rathapravaram chariot, āsthāya mounting, prayāntam while going, mahāghōram terrible, bhīmadarśanam fearful appearance, rākṣasam at the Rakshasa, antarikṣāgatāḥ going to the sky, ghōrāḥ fierce, śakunāḥ birds, pratyaṣēdhayan stood before.

While the Rakshasa was mounted on the chariot and going braying like a donkey, a fearful bird going in the sky stood before his chariot.
rathaśīrṣēmahānbhīmōgṛdhraścanipapātaha ।।6.51.31।।

dhvajāgrēgrathitāścaivanipētuḥkuṇapāśanāḥ .


mahānbhīmaḥ very frightening, gṛdhraśca vultures, rathaśīrṣē on the chariot, nipapātaha descended on, kuṇapāśanāḥ a foul smelling, grathitāḥ vultures, dhvajāgrē from the chariot top, nipētuḥ fell down.

A foul smelling frightening vulture (that feeds on the dead body) descended on top of the chariot and fell down.
rudhirārdrōmahān śvētaḥkabandhaḥpatitōbhuvi ।।6.51.32।।

visvaraṅcōtsṛjannādaṅdhūmrākṣasyasamīpataḥ .

vavarṣarudhiraṅdēvassañcacālacamēdinī ।।6.51.33।।


rudhirārdraḥ drenched in blood, śvētaḥ white, mahān great, kabandhaḥ bird, visvaram discordant cry, nādam sound, utsṛjan heard, dhūmrākṣasya at Dhumraksha, samīpataḥ nearby, bhuvi on ground, patitaḥ fell, dēvaḥ Deva, rudhiram , blood, vavarṣa rained, mēdinī on earth.

A trunk of a white bird drenched in blood sounding discordant fell near by Dhumraksha. It appeared like a rain god shedding blood on the ground.
pratilōmaṅvanauvāyurnirghātasamanisvanaḥ .

timiraughavṛtāstatradiśaścanacakāśirē ।।6.51.34।।


nirghātasamanisvanaḥ thunder like roar, vāyuḥ wind, pratilōmam adversely, vavau blew, tatra there, diśaḥ directions, timiraughavṛtāḥ darkness pervaded, nacakāśirē directions could not be discerned.

Thunder like roar was heard. Wind blew adversely. Darkness pervaded, and directions could not be seen.
satūtpātāṅstadādṛṣṭavārākṣasānāṅbhayāvahān .

prādurbhūtānsughōrāṅścadhūmrākṣōvyathitō.bhavat ।।6.51.35।।

mumuhūrākṣasāḥsarvēdhūmrākṣasyapurassarāḥ .


rākṣasānām Rakshasas, bhayāvahān feared, tadā then, prādudbhūtān manifesting deities, ghōrān dreadful, utpātān generated, dṛṣṭavā seeing, dhūmrākṣaḥ Dhumraksha, vyathitaḥ worried, abhavat became, dhūmrākṣasya Dhumraksha's, puraḥsarāḥ in front, sarvē all, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, mumuhuḥ lost consciousness.

Then Rakshasa feared seeing the dreadful manifestation and got worried. All the Rakshasas walking in front of Dhumraksha lost consciousness.
tataḥsubhīmōbahubhirniśācarairvṛtō.bhiniṣkramyaraṇōtsukōbalī .

dadarśatāṅrāghavabāhupālitāṅmahaughakalpāṅbahuvānarīṅcamūm ।।6.51.36।।


tataḥ thereafter, subhīmaḥ very powerful, balī strong, bahubhiḥ many, niśācaraiḥ Rakshasas, vṛtaḥ surrounding, raṇōtsukaḥ enthusiastic of war, abhiniṣkramya, rāghavabāhupālitām protected by Raghava, mahaughakalpām universal dissolution, bahuvānarīm many Vanaras, tāṅcamūm the army, dadarśa beheld.

Thereafter many strong and powerful Rakshasas surrounding Dhumraksha, who was enthusiastic about war, beheld many Vanaras protected by Raghava like at universal dissolution.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēēkapañcāśassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the fifty first sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
