[Ravana sends Vajradamshtra to fight. Fierce fight takes place between Vanaras and Vajradamshtra.]

धूम्राक्षंनिहतंश्रुत्वारावणोराक्षसेश्वरः ।

क्रोधेनमहताऽविष्टोनिश्श्वसन्नुरगोयथा ।।6.53.1।।

दीर्घमुष्णंविनिश्श्वस्यक्रोधेनकलुषीकृतः ।

अब्रवीद्राक्षसंक्रूरंवज्रदंष्ट्रंमहाबलम् ।।6.53.2।।


राक्षसेश्वरः Rakshasa's Lord, धूम्राक्षम् Dhumraksha, निहतम् killed, श्रुत्वा hearing, महता very, क्रोधेन by anger, आविष्टः overcome, उरगोयथा like a serpent, निश्श्वसन् hissing, दीर्घम् deep, उष्णम् hot, विनिश्श्वस्य heaving a burning sigh, क्रोधेन in anger, कलुषीकृतः having done a dirty task, क्रूरम् cruel, महाबलम् of mighty prowess, वज्रदंष्ट्रम् Vajradamshtra, राक्षसम् Rakshasa, अब्रवीत् spoke.

The Lord of Rakshasas was overcome with anger on hearing about Dhumraksha's death. He was hissing like a serpent, heaving a deep burning sigh, for having done a dirty task. He spoke to cruel Vajradamshtra of mighty prowess.
गच्छत्वंवीर निर्याहिराक्षसैःपरिवारितः ।

जहिदाशरथिंरामंसुग्रीवंवानरैःसह ।।6.53.3।।


वीर hero, त्वम् you, गच्छ proceed, राक्षसैः Rakshasas, परिवारितः accompanied by companions, निर्याहि kill, दाशरथिम् Dasaratha's, रामम् Rama, सुग्रीवम् and Sugriva, वानरैः Vanaras सह along with, जहि ongoing.

"O Hero, proceed, accompanied by Rakshasa companions and kill Dasaratha's Rama and Sugriva along with Vanaras."
तथेत्युक्त्वाद्रुततरंमायावीराक्षसेश्वरम् ।

निर्जगामबलैस्सार्दंबहुभिःपरिवारितः ।।6.53.4।।

नागैरश्वैःखरैरुष्ट्रैःसंयुक्तस्सुसमाहितः ।

पताकाध्वजचित्रैश्चरथैश्चसमलङ्कृतः ।।6.53.5।।


मायावी deceit, राक्षसेश्वरः king of Rakshasas, तथाइति in this way, उक्त्वा having spoken, बलैःसार्थम् along with army, बहुभिः many, परिवारितः generals, नागैः elephants, अश्वैः horses, खरैः donkeys, उष्ट्रैः camels, पताकाध्वचित्रैः banners and pennons, रथैः chariots, संयुक्तः collected, सुसमाहितः collected, समलङ्कृतः decorated, द्रुततरम् armlets and diadems, निर्जगाम went.

The king of Rakshasas, being a deceit, having spoken in that way, many generals of the army went accompanied by elephants, horses, camels, and donkeys with chariots decorated with banners and pennons, and diadems collected together.
ततोविचित्रकेयूरमुकुटैश्चविभूषितः ।

तनुत्राणिचसमावृत्यसधनुर्निर्ययौद्रुतम् ।।6.53.6।।

पताकालङ्कृतंदीप्तंतप्तकाञ्चनभूषितम् ।

रथंप्रदक्षिणंकृत्वासमारोहच्चमूपतिः ।।6.53.7।।


चमूपतिः general, पताकालङ्कृतम् decorated with flags, दीप्तम् glowing, तप्तकाञ्चनभूषितम् shining in polished gold, रथम् chariot, प्रदक्षिणंकृत्वा going round clockwise, समारोहत् ascended.

The general went ascending the chariot shining with well polished shining gold, decked with flags after going around clockwise.
यष्टिभिस्तोमरैचशित्रैश्शूलैश्चमुसलैरपि ।

भिण्डिपालैश्चपाशैश्चशक्तिभिःपट्टसैरपि ।।6.53.8।।

खडगैश्चक्रैर्गदाभिश्चनिशितैश्चपरश्वधैः ।

पदातयश्चनिर्यान्तिविविधाःशस्त्रपाणयः ।।6.53.9।।


शस्त्रपाणयः armed with swords, विविधाः many, पदातयश्च foot soldiers, यष्टभिः poles, चित्रैः strange, तोमरैः iron clubs, शूलैश्च tridents, मुसलैरपि iron bars, भिदनिपालैश्च slings used to throw, पाशैश्च ropes, शक्तिभिः spears, पट्टसैरपि spears with sharp edge, खडगैः swords, चक्रैः javelins, गदाभिश्च maces, निशितैः sharp, परश्वधैः battle axes, निर्यान्ति departed.

Armed with swords, many foot soldiers carrying poles, strange clubs, tridents, iron bars, slings and roped to throw spears and spears with sharp edges, swords, battle axes, javelins, and maces, departed.
विचित्रवाससस्सर्वेदीप्ताराक्षसपुङ्गवाः ।

गजामदोत्कटाश्शूराश्चलन्तइवपर्वताः ।।6.53.10।।

All the Rakshasa leaders decorated with lovely raiment, glowing, the heroes moved like mountains. They seemed like elephants intoxicated with ichor.
तेयुद्धकुशलैरूढास्तोमराङ्कुशपाणिभिः ।

अन्येलक्षणसंयुक्ताश्शूरारूढामहाबलाः ।।6.53.11।।


तोमराङ्कुशपाणिभिः carrying tridents and clubs, रूढाः goads, ते they, युद्धकुशलैः eager for war, शूरारूढाः mounted, लक्षणसंयुक्ताः noble characteristics, अन्ये others, महाबलाः extraordinary might.

Carrying tridents, clubs, and goads eager for war the Rakshasas mounted on mahouts and horses of noble characteristics, warriors with extraordinary might departed.
तद्राक्षसबलंसर्वंविप्रस्थितमशोभत ।

प्रावृटकालेयथामेघानर्दमानास्सविद्युतः ।।6.53.12।।

निस्सृतादक्षिणद्वारादङ्गदोयत्रयूथपः ।


विप्रस्थितम् determined with purpose, तत् then, सर्वम् entire, राक्षसबलम् Rakshasa army, प्रावृट् काले rainy season, नर्दमानाः roaring, सविद्युतः in the vicinity, मेघाःयथा like cloud, यथा like that, अशोभत splendid, यत्र there, अङ्गदः Angada, यूथपः army, दक्षिणद्वारात् from southern gate, निःसृता crossing over.

Then the entire Rakshasa army determined with a purpose roaring like clouds of the rainy season it looked splendid and crossed over the southern gate where Angada was stationed.
तेषांनिष्क्रममाणानामशुभंसमजायत ।।6.53.13।।

आकाशाद्विघनात्तीव्रादुल्काश्चाभ्यन्यपतंस्तदा ।

वमन्त्यःपावकज्वालाशशिवाघोरंववाशिरे ।।6.53.14।।


तेषाम् in that way, निष्क्रममाणानाम् as they were leaving, अशुभम् evil, अजायत portents, विघनात् appeared, तीव्रात् intense, आकाशात् from the sky, तदा then, उल्काश्च meteors, अभ्यपतन् falling, घोराः dreadful, शिवाः jackals, पावकज्वालाः dazzling fire, वमन्तःववाशिरे giving out from the sky.

As they were leaving evil portents appeared. Dreadful jackals, dazzling fire from the sky and meteors falling appeared.
व्याहरन्तमृगाघोरारक्षसांनिधनंतदा ।

समापतन्तोयोधास्तुप्रास्खलन् स्तत्रदारुणम् ।।6.53.15।।


तदा then, घोराः fierce, मृगाः animals, रक्षसाम् Rakshasas, निधनम् indicated, व्याहरन्त destruction, समापतन्तः fell down, योधास्तु in war, तत्र there, दारुणम् dreadful, प्रास्खलन् while going.

Then the fierce animals indicated the death of Rakshasas, who were going deluded with war and fell down.
एतानौत्पातिकान् दृष्टवावज्रदंष्ट्रोमहाबलः ।

धैर्यमालम्भ्यतेजस्वीनिर्जगामरणोत्सुकः ।।6.53.16।।


महाबलः mighty, तेजस्वी energetic, वज्रदंष्ट्रः Vajradamshtra, एतान् , औत्पातिकान् portents that came out, दृष्टवा seeing, धैर्यम् courageous, आलम्भ्य picking up, रणोत्सुकः eager for war, निर्जगाम sallied forth.

Mighty Vajradamshtra who was energetic, picking up courage seeing the portents that came up, sallied forth eager for war.
तांस्तुनिष्क्रमतोदृष्टवावानराजितकाशिनः ।

प्रणेदुस्सुमहानादान्पूरयांश्चदिशोदश ।।6.53.17।।


जितकाशिनः who assumed victory, वानराः Vanaras, निष्क्रमतः coming out, तान् them, दृष्टवा seeing, सुमहानादान् loud noise, प्रणेदुः stretching, दश ten, दिशः directions, पूरयंश्च filled.

Vanaras who assumed victory, seeing the Rakshasas coming out stretching filled all the ten directions with loud noise.
ततःप्रवृत्तंतुमुलंहरीणांराक्षसैस्सह ।

घोराणांभीमरूपाणामन्योन्यवथकाङ् क्षिणाम् ।।6.53.18।।


ततः then, घोराणाम् dreadful, भीमरूपाणाम् fierce form, अन्योन्यवथकाङ् क्षिणाम् each one trying to kill another, हरीणाम् Vanaras, तथा in the same way, रक्षसाम् Rakshasas, तुमुलम् intense, प्रवृत्तम् encounter.

Then dreadful encounters of fierce form took place between Vanaras and Rakshasas each one trying to kill another.
निष्पतन्तोमहोत्साहोभिन्नदेहशिरोधराः ।

रुधिरोक्षितसर्वाङ्गान्यपतन्थरणीतले ।।6.53.19।।


निष्पतन्तः proceeding, महोत्साहाः very eager, भिन्नदेहशिरोधराः bodies broken heads severed, रुधिरोक्षितसर्वाङ्गाः all limbs bathed in blood, धरणीतले on the ground, न्यपतन् fell.

Proceeding Further, very eager to fight they fell on the ground with their bodies broken, heads severed, and all limbs bathed in blood.
केचिदन्योन्यमासाद्यशूराःपरिघपाणयः ।

चिक्षिपुर्विविधंशस्त्रंसमरेष्न्विवर्तिनः ।।6.53.20।।


परिघपाणयः whose hand s resembled iron clubs, शूराः heroes, समरेषु in war, अनिवर्तिनः who never turned back, केचित् indeed, अन्योन्यम् one another, आसाद्य, विविधं many kinds, शस्त्रम् weapons, चिक्षिपुः flung.

Heroes in war whose hand s were like iron clubs, who never turned back in war, indeed flung weapons of many kinds on one another.
द्रुमाणांचशिलानांचशस्त्राणांचापिनिस्स्वनः ।।6.53.21।।

श्रूयतेसुमहांस्तत्रघोरोहृदयभेदसः ।


तत्र there, द्रुमाणांशिलानांच trees and rocks, शस्त्राणांच weapons also, घोरः fierce, हृदयभेदसः pierced hearts, सुमहान् loud, निःस्वनः in the battlefield, श्रूयते heard.

There, a very loud fearful noise was heard which pierced the hearts in the battlefield, that was produced by the striking of weapons with trees and rocks.
रथनेमिस्वनस्तत्रधनुषश्चापिनिस्वसत् ।।6.53.22।।

शङ्खभेरीमृदङ्गानांबभूवतुमुलःस्वनः ।


तत्र there, निस्वसत् came out, रथनेमिस्वनः clutter of chariots, धनुषश्चापि and bows, शङ्खभेरीमृदङ्गानाम् conch, and kettle drums, and tom toms तुमुलः tumultuous, स्वनः sound, बभूव heard.

Then came out tumultuous sounds of clutter of chariots, bows, conches, kettle drums and tom toms.
केचिदस्त्राणिसन्सृज्यबाहुयुद्धमकुर्वत ।

तलैश्चचरणैश्चापिमुष्टिभिश्चद्रुमैरपि ।।6.53.23।।

जानुभिश्चहताःकेचिद्भिन्नदेहाश्चराक्षसाः ।

शिलाभिश्चूर्णिताःकेचिद्वानरैर्युद्धदुर्मदैः ।।6.53.24।।


केचित् indeed, अस्त्राणि weapons, सन्सृज्य abandoning, युद्धम् battle, अकुर्वत not did, तलैश्च palms, चरणैश्चापि feet, मुष्टिभिश्च fists, द्रुमैरपि trees, जानुभिश्च knees, युद्धदुर्मदैः, वानरैः Vanaras, हताः smashed, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, भिन्नदेहाः broken bodies, केचित् indeed, शिलाभिः rocks, चूर्णिताः crushed.

Indeed, abandoning the weapons, the Vanaras fought with their palms, fists, feet, trees, and knees and smashed the Rakshasas crushing their bodies like rocks.
वज्रदंष्ट्रोभृशंबाणै: रणेवित्रासयन्हरीन् ।

चचारलोकसंहारेपाशहस्तइवान्तकः ।।6.53.25।।


वज्रदंष्ट्रैः Vajradamshtra, रणे in battle, बाणैः with arrows, हरीन् at Vanaras, भृशम् striking, वित्रासयन् destruction, लोकसंहारे destruction of the world, पाशहस्तः with noose in hand, अन्तकःइव like god of death, चचार went about.

Vajradamshtra went about in the battle striking Vanaras just like death goes with a noose for destruction of the world.
बलवन्तोऽस्त्रविदुषोनानाप्रहरणारणे ।

जघ्नुर्वानरसैन्यानिराक्षसाःक्रोधमूर्छिताः ।।6.53.26।।


बलवन्तः mighty, अस्त्रविदुषः endowed with skill of weapons, नानाप्रहरणाः of every kind, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, क्रोधमूर्छिताः deluded with anger, रणे in war, वानरसैन्यानि at the Vanara army, जघ्नुः went.

Mighty Vajradamshtra, who was endowed with the skill of using every kind of weapon, deluded with anger, went after the Vanara army.
निघ्नतोराक्षसान्दृष्टवासर्वान्वालिसुतोरणे ।

क्रोधेनवदिगुणाविष्टःसंवर्तकइवानलः ।।6.53.27।।


दृष्टवाः seeing, वालिसुतः Vali's son, क्रोधेन enraged, द्विगुणाविष्टः redoubled, संवर्तके at the time of universal destruction, अनलःइव like fire, रणे in war, तान् them, राक्षसान् Rakshasas, निघ्नतः exterminate.

Seeing the Vanaras being destroyed, Vali's son, Angada with redoubled anger, like fire at the time of universal destruction, started to exterminate Rakshasas.
तान् राक्षसगणान्सर्वान्वृक्षमुद्यम्यवीर्यवान् ।

अङ्गदःक्रोधताम्राक्षःसिंहःक्षुद्रमृगानिव ।।6.53.28।।

कारकदनंघोरंशक्रतुल्यपराक्रमः ।।6.53.29।।


वीर्यवान् heroic, अङ्गदः Angada, क्रोथताम्राक्षः eyes turned red in anger, वृक्षम् tree, उद्यम्य seizing, सिंहः like lion, क्षुद्रमृगानिव like a lion with small animals, सर्वान् all, तान् of them, राक्षसगणान् Rakshasa army, शक्रतुल्यपराक्रमः equal to Indra in prowess, घोरम् fierce, कदनम् fierce fight, चकार made.

Heroic Angada, equal to Indra in prowess, enraged, eyes turned red in anger, seizing a tree made a fierce fight with Rakshasa army like a lion with small animals.
अङ्गदाभिहतास्तत्रराक्षसाभीमविक्रमाः ।

विभिन्नशिरसःपेतुर्विकृताइवपादपाः ।।6.53.30।।


तत्र there, अङ्गदाभिहताः struck by Angada, भीमविक्रमाः of fearful valour, राक्षसाः Rakshasa, विभिन्नशिरसः with broken heads, विकृताः smashed, पादपाःइव like trees, पेतुः fell.

There, struck by Angada of fearful valour, the Rakshasas fell like trees smashed and heads broken.
रथैरश्वैर्ध्वजैश्चित्रैश्शरैर्हरिरक्षसाम् ।

रुधिरेणसञ्छन्नाभूमिर्भयकरातदा ।।6.53.31।।


तदा then, रथैः chariots, चित्रैः wonderful, ध्वजैः flags, अश्वैः horses, हरिरक्षसाम् Vanaras and Rakshasas, शरीरैः bodies, रुधिरेण in blood, सञ्छन्ना bathed, भूमिः ground, भयकरा fearful to look.

Then the wonderful chariots, flags, horses, Vanaras and Rakshasas bodies bathed in blood fell on the ground looked fearful.
हारकेयूरवस्स्रैश्चशत्रैश्चसमलङ्कृता ।

भूमिर्भातिरणेतत्रशारदीवयथानिशा ।।6.53.32।।


हारकेयूरवस्त्रश्च with strewn armlets, necklaces, clothes, शत्रैश्च weapons, तत्र there, रणे in the battlefield, समलङ्कृता decorated all over, भूमिः ground, शारदी night, निशेवयथा like autumnal night, भाति shone.

The battlefield with strewn armlets, necklaces and clothes, weapons looked like autumnal night decorated all over.
अङ्गदस्यचवेगेनतद्राक्षसबलंमहत् ।

प्राकम्पततदातत्रपवनेनाम्बुदोयथा ।।6.53.33।।


तदा then, तत्र there, महत् great, तत् that, राक्षसबलम् Rakshasa hordes, अङ्गदस्य Angada's, वेगेन speed, पवनेन like wind, अम्बुदोयथा like rain cloud, प्राकम्पत shook violently.

Then the Rakshasa hordes hit by Angada shook violently just as a rain cloud would under wind.
