[Hanuman kills Akampana in the fight.]

taddṛṣṭavāsumahatkarmakṛtaṅvānaratastamaiḥ .

krōdhamāhārayāmāsayudhitīvramakampanaḥ ।।6.56.1।।


akampanaḥ Akampana, yudhi in battle, vānarasattamaiḥ foremost of Vanaras, kṛtam accomplishment, tat that, sumahat great, karma action, dṛṣṭavā observing, tīvram violent, krōdham angry, āhārayāmāsa exhibiting.

Observing the great action and accomplishment of the foremost Vanaras in the battle, Akampana exhibited violent anger.
krōdhamūrcitarūpastudhūnvanparamakārmukam .

dṛṣṭavātukarmaśatrūṇāṅsārathiṅvākyamabravīt ।।6.56.2।।


śatrūṇām by enemies, karma deeds, dṛṣṭavā looking, krōdhamūrcitarūpaḥ exhibited violent anger, paramakārmukam highly furious, dhūnvan bow, sārathim charioteer, vākyam words, abravīt spoke.

Looking at the deeds of enemies, deluded with violent anger, Akampana spoke these words holding the bow and looking at the charioteer.
tatttvaitāvattvaritaṅrathaṅprāpayasārathē .

yatraitēbahavōghnantisubahūnrākṣasānraṇē ।।6.56.3।।


sārathē O Charioteer, yatra there, bahava: many, ētē those, raṇē in battle, subahūn many, rākṣasān Rakshasas, ghnanti destroyed, tvaritaḥ quickly, tattraiva to that place, ratham chariot, prāpaya drive.

"O Charioteer, quickly drive the chariot to that place where many Rakshasas are destroyed in the battle."
ētē.trabalavantōhibhīmakōpāścavānarāḥ .

drumaśailapraharaṇāstiṣṭhantipramukhēmama ।।6.56.4।।


balavantaḥ mighty, bhīmakōpāśca terribly angry, ētē those, vānarāḥ Vanara, drumaśailapraharaṇāḥ using trees and hillocks as weapons, atra there, mama my, pramukhē chiefs, tiṣṭhantihi stand.

"Those Vanaras are mighty and terribly angry. They are using trees and hillocks as weapons. Take me where chiefs are standing."
ētānnihantumicchāmisamaraślāghinōhyaham .

ētaiḥpramathitaṅsarvaṅdṛśyatērākṣasāṅbalam ।।6.56.5।।


aham I, samaraślāghinaḥ boast of their warfare, ētān them, nihantum will finish, icchāmi desire to, rakṣasām Rakshasas, sarvam all, balam army, ētaiḥ in the same way, pramathim end, dṛśyatē wish to see.

"I wish to see the end of Vanaras who boast of their warfare. The entire Rakshasa army is destroyed by them."
tataḥprajavanāśvēnarathēnarathināṅvaraḥ .

harīnabhyahanatkrōdhāccharajālaikampanaḥ ।।6.56.6।।


tataḥ then, rathinām on the chariot, varaḥ foremost, akampanaḥ Akampana, pracalitāśvēna by fast moving horses, rathēna from chariot, śarajālaiḥ network of arrows, tkrōdhāt enraged, harīn Vanaras, abhyahanat assailed.

Then Akampana seated in the chariot drawn by fast moving horses, assailed the Vanaras with a network of arrows.
nasthātuṅvānarāśśēkuḥkiṅpunaryōddhumāhavē .

akampanaśarairbhagnāssarvaēvavidudruvuḥ ।।6.56.7।।


vānarāḥ Vanaras, āhavē counter, sthātum to stand, naśēkuḥ not fight, yōddhum in battle, kiṅpunaḥ What to say again, sarvēēva all, akampanaśaraiḥ by Akampana's arrows, bhagnāḥ shattered, vidudruvuḥ took to their heels.

The Vanaras could not counter or stand nor fight in battle. What to say more? Shattered by Akampana's arrows, they all took to their heels.
tānmṛtyuvaśamāpannānakampanavaṅśagatān .

samīkṣyahanumānjñātīnupatasthēmahābalaḥ ।।6.56.8।।


akampanavaṅśagatān kith and kin fallen under the sway of Akampana, mṛtyuvaśam sway of death, āpannān caught by, tān them, jñātīn kin, samīkṣya observing, mahābalaḥ mighty, hanumān Hanuman, upatasthē approached.

Having observed that Vanaras are fallen under the sway of Akampana and under the sway of death, mighty Hanuman approached Akampana.
taṅmahāplavagaṅdṛṣṭavāsarvētēplavagayūthapā: .

samētyasamarēvīrāssahitāḥparyavārayan ।।6.56.9।।


vīrāḥ hero, tē you, sarvē all, plavagayūtapā: troops of Vanaras, mahāplavagam great monkey, tam him, dṛṣṭavā seeing, samētya together, sahitāḥ along with, paryavārayan surrounded.

Seeing the great monkey, the Vanara troops got together and surrounded him.
avasthitaṅhanūmantaṅtēdṛṣṭavāhariyūthapā: .

babhūvurbalavantōhibalavantaṅsamāśritāḥ ।।6.56.10।।


tē to you, hariyūthapā: monkey leaders, avasthitam firmly established, hanūmantam Hanuman, dṛṣṭavā seeing, balavantam strong, samāśritāḥ taken shelter, babhūvuḥ became.

Seeing Hanuman, the monkey leaders took their shelter under him, got established firmly and became strong.
akampanastuśailābhaṅhanūmantamavasthitam .

mahēndraivadārābhiśśarairabhivavarṣaha ।।6.56.11।।


akampanastu Akampana also, avasthitam established, śailābham like a mountain, hanūmantam Hanumantha, dhārābhiḥ torrents, mahēndraḥiva like Indra, śaraiḥ arrows, abhinavarṣaha showered rain.

On Akampana, who was well established like a mountain, mighty Hanuman showered torrents of arrows like Indra showered rain.
acintayitvābāṇaughān śarīrēpatitānśitān .

akampanavadhārthāyamanōdadhrēmahābalaḥ ।।6.56.12।।


mahābalaḥ mighty, śitān pierced, śarīrē in the body, patitān fallen, bāṇaughān volley of arrows, acintayitvā un mindful, akampanavadhārthāya for destroying Akampana, manaḥ mind, dadhrē thought.

Mighty Hanuman unmindful of the volley of arrows pierced in his body thought in his mind only about the destruction of Akampana.
saprahasyamahātējāhanumān mārutātmajaḥ .

abhidudrāvatadrakṣaḥkampayannivamēdinīm ।।6.56.13।।


mahātējāḥ highly energetic, mārutātmajaḥ son of Maruti, saḥ he, hanumān Hanuman, prahasya laughing, mēdinīm earth, kampayanniva to shake, tat rakṣaḥ to that Rakshasa, abhidudrāva sprung up.

Hanuman, the highly energetic son of Maruthi laughing, sprung up causing the earth to shake and rushed to that Rakshasa.
tasyābhinardamānasyadīpyamānasyatējasā .

babhūvarūpaṅdurdharṣaṅdīptasyēvavibhāvasōḥ ।।6.56.14।।


abhi super, nardamānasya as he roared, tējasā brilliance, dīpyamānasya blazing, tasya his, rūpam form, dīptasya burning, vibhāvasōḥiva like, durdharṣam formidable to win, babhūva became.

As he roared, his brilliance was blazing, his form was burning and became formidable for others to be at him.
ātmānaṅmapraharaṇaṅjñātvākrōdhasamanvitaḥ .

śailamutpāṭayāmāsavēgēnaharipuṅgavaḥ ।।6.56.15।।


haripuṅgavaḥ Vanara leader, ātmānam himself, apraharaṇam without any weapon, jñātvā knowing, krōdhasamanvitaḥ full of anger, vēgēna quickly, śailam mountain, utpāṭayāmāsa took up.

Vanara leader himself knowing that he is without any weapon, full of anger took up a mountain quickly.
gṛhītvātaṅmahāśailaṅpāṇinaikēnamārutiḥ .

savinadyamahānādaṅbhrāmayāmāsavīryavān ।।6.56.16।।


saḥ he, vīryavān heroic, mārutiḥ Maruthi, ēkēna alone, pāṇinā by hand, sumahāśailam huge mountain, gṛhītvā taking hold, mahānādam loud noise, vinadya whirled, bhrāmayāmāsa round.

He, the heroic Maruthi, with one hand alone taking a huge mountain whirled round making loud noises.
tatastamabhidudrāvarākṣasēndramakampanam .

purāhinamuciṅsaṅ khyēvajrēṇēvapurandaraḥ ।।6.56.17।।


tataḥ then, purā earlier, purandaraḥ Indra, saṅ khyē rushed, vajrēṇa with thunderbolt, namucimiva like Namuchi, rākṣasēndram Rakshasa king, tam him, akampanam Akampanam, abhidudrāva tormented.

Then he went to Akampana and tormented him just as Indra did with his thunderbolt to Namuchi.
akampanastutaddṛṣṭavāgiriśṛṅgaṅsamudyatam .

dūrādēvamahābāṇairardhacandrairvyadārayat ।।6.56.18।।


akampanastu Akampana too, samudyatam uplifted, tat that, giriśṛṅgam peak of mountain, dṛṣṭavā seeing, dūrādēva from distance, ardhacandraiḥ halfmoon, mahābāṇaiḥ great arrows, vyadārayat discharged.

Seeing the peak of the mountain uplifted, Akampana also discharged halfmoon shaped great arrows from a distance.
tatparvatāgramākāśērakṣōbāṇavidāritam .

vikīrṇaṅpatitaṅdṛṣṭavāhanumānkrōdhamūrchitaḥ ।।6.56.19।।


ākāśē in the sky, rakṣōbāṇavidāritam by Rakshasa's arrows broken, vikīrṇam into pieces, patitam fallen, tat that, parvatāgram peak of mountain, dṛṣṭavā gazing, hanumān Hanuman, krōdhamūrchitaḥ deluded with anger.

Hanuman seeing the peak of the mountain broken into pieces by Rakshasa's arrows and fallen was deluded with anger.
sō.śvakarṇaṅsamāsādyarōṣadarpānvitōhariḥ .

tūrṇamutpāṭayāmāsamahāgirimivōcchritam ।।6.56.20।।


saḥ he, hariḥ monkey, rōṣadarpānvitaḥ pride and anger, mahāgirimiva like a big mountain, ucchritam collecting, aśvakarṇam Aswakarana tree, samāsādya holding, tūrṇam quickly, utpāṭayāmāsa uprooted.

He (Hanuman) filled with pride and anger quickly uprooted an Aswakarana tree as huge as a mountain and held it.
taṅgṛhītvāmahāskandhaṅsō.śvakarṇaṅmahādyutiḥ .

prahasyaparayāprītyābhrāmayāmāsabhūtalē ।।6.56.21।।


mahādyutiḥ endowed with great splendour, saḥ he, mahāskandham with huge trunk, aśvakarṇam Aswakarana tree, gṛhītvā seizing, parayā great, prītyā with delight, prahasya laughing, bhūtalē on the ground, bhrāmayāmāsa whirled it round.

He (Hanuman) endowed with great splendour, seizing a huge trunk of Aswakarana tree with great delight, whirled it round on the ground laughing.
pradhāvannūruvēgēnaprabhañjaṅstarasādrumān .

hanūmānparamakruddhaścaraṇairdārayatkṣitam ।।6.56.22।।


paramakruddhaḥ highly enraged, hanumān Hanuman, pradhāvan running, ūruvēgēna at high speed, caraṇaiḥ feet, tarasā earth, drumān trees, prabhañja breaking, dārayatkṣitam cleaving the earth.

Highly enraged Hanuman was running at high speed that his feet were seen breaking the trees and cleaving the earth.
gajāṅścasagajārōhānsarathānrathinastathā .

jaghānahanumān bhīmān rākṣasāṅścapadātigān ।।6.56.23।।


hanumān Hanuman, sagajārōhān the mahouts, gajāṅśca and elephants, tathā similarly, sarathān the chariots, rathinaḥ and riders, bhīmān terrific, padātigān on foot, rākṣasān ca with Rakshasas, jaghāna struck.

Hanuman struck the mahouts, elephants, similarly the chariots and riders of chariots as well as the terrific Rakshasas who fought standing on feet.
tamantakamivakruddhaṅsadrumaṅprāṇahāriṇam .

hanūmantamabhiprēkṣyarākṣasāvipradudruvuḥ ।।6.56.24।।


kruddham angry, antakamiva like spirit of death, sadrumam those trees, prāṇahāriṇam took life, taṅhanūmantam that Hanuman, abhiprēkṣya seeing, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, vipradudruvuḥ took to heels.

Hanuman, enraged like the spirit of death, took their life (Rakshasas) armed with trees and on seeing him the Rakshasas took to their heels.
tamāpatantaṅsaṅkṛddhaṅrākṣasānāṅbhayāvaham .

dadarśākampanōvīraścukṣōdhacananādaca ।।6.56.25।।


apatantam coming towards, rākṣasānām Rakshasas, bhayāvaham fearing, saṅkṛddham very angry, tam him, vīraḥ heroic, akampanaḥ Akampana, dadarśa saw, cukṣōdhaca running, nanādaca roared.

The heroic Akampana saw Hanuman coming towards him very angry. Fearing Hanuman, the Rakshasas ran roaring in fear.
sacaturdaśabhirbāṇaiśśitairdēhavidāraṇaiḥ .

nirbibhēdahanūmantaṅmahāvīryamakampanaḥ ।।6.56.26।।


saḥakampanaḥ Akampana, niśitaiḥ pointed, dēhavidāraṇaiḥ tormenting the body, caturdaśabhi fourteen, bāṇaiḥ arrows, mahāvīryam powerful, hanūmantam Hanuman, nirbibhēda split.

With fourteen pointed powerful arrows, Akampana tormented and split the body of Hanuman.
satadāpratividdhastubahvībhiśśaravṛṣṭabhiḥ .

hanūmāndadṛśēvīraḥprarūḍhaivasānumān ।।6.56.27।।


śaravṛṣṭibhiḥ rain of arrows, bahvībhiḥ many times, tadā then, pratividdastu interrupted, vīraḥ valiant one, saḥhanumān that Hanuman, prarūḍhaḥ stood still, sānumāniva like a mountain with trees, dadṛśē seemed.

Valiant Hanuman, even though interrupted several times with rain of arrows, stood still like a mountain full of trees.
virarājamahākāyōmahāvīryōmahāmanā: .

puṣpitāśōkasaṅkāśōvidhūmaivapāvakaḥ ।।6.56.28।।


mahāvīryaḥ exceedingly valiant, mahākāyaḥ gigantic, mahāmanā: courageous, puṣpitāśōkasaṅkāśaḥ like fully blossomed Ashoka trees, vidhūmaḥ smokeless, pāvakaḥiva like fire, virarāja shone.

The gigantic Hanuman, exceedingly valiant and courageous one shone like a fully blossomed Ashoka tree, resembled smokeless fire.
tatō.nyaṅvṛkṣamutpāṭyakṛtvāvēgamanuttamam .

śirasyabhijaghānāśurākṣasēndramakampanam ।।6.56.29।।


tataḥ then, anuttamam supreme, vēgam speed, kṛtvā doing, anyam other, vṛkṣam tree, utpāṭya uprooting, āśu there upon, rākṣasēndram Rakshasa chief, akampanam Akampana, śirasi head, jaghāna struck.

Then Hanuman performed another supreme deed by uprooting a tree and striking on the head of Akampana, the chief of Rakshasas.
savṛkṣēṇahatastēnasakrōdhēnamahātmanā .

rākṣasōvānarēndrēṇapapātacamamāraca ।।6.56.30।।


sakrōdhēna reacting in anger, mahātmanā great self, tēnavānarēndrēṇa by Vanara chief, vṛkṣēṇa by the tree, hataḥ striking, saḥ he, rākṣasaḥ Rakshasa, papāta fell, mamāraca dead.

Reacting in anger the great Vanara chief struck the Rakshasa with a tree, by which the Rakshasa fell down dead.
taṅdṛṣṭavānihataṅbhūmaurākṣasēndramakampanam .

vyathitārākṣasāssarvēkṣitikampaivadrumāḥ ।।6.56.31।।


nihatam dead, rākṣasēndram Rakshasa chief, tam him, akampanam Akampana, bhūmau on the ground, dṛṣṭavā seeing, sarvē all, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, kṣitikampē shaken in earthquake, drumāḥiva like a tree, vyathitāḥ distressed.

Seeing Akampana lying dead on the ground, the Rakshasas were shaken like the trees in the earthquake and were distressed.
tyaktapraharaṇāssarvērākṣasāstēparājitāḥ .

laṅkāmabhiyayustrastāvānarāstaibhidrutāḥ ।।6.56.32।।


parājitāḥ defeated, tē they, sarvē all, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasa, tyaktapraharaṇāḥ abandoning weapons, taiḥ those, vānarā: Vanaras, abhidrutāḥ chased, trastā: frightened, laṅkām into Lanka, abhiyuyuḥ ran away.

Abandoning weapons, all Rakshasas having been defeated, chased by the Vanaras, frightened, ran away into Lanka.
tēmuktakēśāḥsambhrāntābhagnamānāḥparājitāḥ .

sravacchramajalairaṅgaiśśvasantōvipradudruvuḥ ।।6.56.33।।


sambhrāntā perplexed, bhagnamānā broken hearted, parājitāḥ defeated, muktakēśāḥ hair loosened, tē they, sravacchramajalaiḥ sweating in limbs, aṅgaiḥ limbs, śvasantaḥ sighing heavily, vipradudruvuḥ ran very fast.

Perplexed, broken hearted, defeated, hair loosened the Rakshasas sweating all over their limbs, sighing heavily ran away very fast.
anyōnyaṅpramamanthustēviviśurnagaraṅbhayāt .

pṛṣṭhatastētusammūḍhāḥprēkṣamāṇāmuhurmuhuḥ ।।6.56.34।।


tē they, bhayāt in fear, pṛṣṭhataḥ covertly, muhurmuhuḥ again and again, prēkṣamāṇāḥ looking back, sammūḍhāḥ bewildered, anyōnyam one another, pramamanthu: crushing, nagaram city, viviśuḥ went.

Again, and again looking back in fear, covertly, bewildered, crushing one another, they went into the Lanka city.
tēṣulaṅkāṅpraviṣṭēṣurākṣasēṣumahābalāḥ .

samētyaharayassarvēhanūmantamapūjayan ।।6.56.35।।


tēṣurākṣasēṣu those Rakshasas, laṅkām into Lanka, praviṣṭēṣu on entering, sarvē all, mahābalāḥ endowed with prowess, harayaḥ Vanaras, samētya getting together, hanūmantam Hanuman, apūjayan paid respects.

Those Rakshasas, endowed with prowess, on entering Lanka got together and paid respects to Hanuman.
sō.piprahṛṣṭastān sarvān harīn sampratyapūjayat .

hanumānsattvasampannōyathārhamanukūlataḥ ।।6.56.36।।


sattvasampannaḥ richly endowed with goodness, saḥ he, hanumānapi Hanuman also, anukūlataḥ others for their part, yathārham accordingly, tān them, sarvān all, harīn monkeys, sampratyapūjayat greatly honoured.

Hanuman also who was richly endowed with goodness greatly honoured all the Vanaras accordingly.
vinēduścayathāprāṇaṅharayōjitakāśinaḥ .

cakarṣuścapunastatrasaprāṇānapirākṣasān ।।6.56.37।।


jitakāśinaḥ atmosphere of triumph, harayaḥ monkeys, yathāprāṇam their life, vinēduḥ sportively, tatra there, saprāṇānapi willing to give up their life, rākṣasān Rakshasas, punaḥ again, cakarṣuśca shouted.

In an atmosphere of triumph, the monkeys sportively shouted again saying that they are willing to give up their life also.
savīraśōbhāmabhajanmahākapiḥsamētyarakṣāṅsinihatyamārutiḥ .

mahāsuraṅbhīmamamitranāśanaḥyathaivaviṣṇurbalinaṅcamūmukhē ।।6.56.38।।


mahākapiḥ great Vanara, saḥmārutiḥ that Maruti, camūmukhē in front army, rakṣāṅsi saviour, samētya along with, nihatya having killed, bhīmam fierce, amitranāśanam killer of foes, yathaiva in the same way, balinam , mahāsuram Lord of Devatas, viṣṇuryathā like Vishnu, vīraśōbhām like a triumphant hero, abhajat shone.

Great Vanara, Maruti shone like a triumphant hero and saviour in front of the army, just as Lord Vishnu, the Lord of Devatas shone after killing the foes (demons).
apūjayandēvagaṇāstadākapiṅsvayaṅcarāmō.tibalaścalakṣmaṇaḥ .

tathaivasugrīvamukhāḥplavaṅgamāvibhīṣaṇaścaivamahābalastathā ।।6.56.39।।


tadā then, dēvagaṇāḥ army of Devatas, svayam themselves, rāmaḥ Rama, atibalaḥ Atibala, lakṣmaṇaḥca and Lakshmana, tathaiva in the same way, sugrīvamukhāḥ Sugriva the chief, plavaṅgamāḥ of monkeys, tathā so also, mahābalaḥ of exceeding might, vibhīṣaṇaścaiva Vibheeshana also, kapim monkey, apūjayan praised.

Thereafter Rama with the army of Devatas, Atibala and Lakshmana, in the same way Sugriva, the army chief, so also, Vibheeshana of exceeding might praised Hanuman.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēṣaṭapañcāśassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the fifty sixth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
