[Ravana sends Prahastha the Commander-in-Chief of the army to the battlefield]

akampanavadhaṅśrutvākruddhōvairākṣasēśvaraḥ .

kiñcidadīnamukhaścāpisacivāṅstānudaikṣata ।।6.57.1।।


rākṣasēśvaraḥ Rakshasa king, akampanavadham Akampana's death, śrutvā having heard, kruddhaḥ angry, kiñcit little, dīnamukhaḥcaapi with pale face, tān his, sacivān ministers, udaikṣata looked at.

The king of Rakshasas hearing about the death of Akampana, was pale and a little angry and looked at his ministers.
satudhyātvāmuhūrtaṅtumantribhissaṅvicāryaca .

tatasturāvaṇaḥpūrvadivasērākṣasādhipaḥ ।।6.57.2।।

purīṅpariyayaulaṅkāṅsarvagulmānavēkṣitum .


rākṣasādhipaḥ Rakshasa king, saḥrāvaṇaḥ Ravana, muhūrtam for a while, dhyātvā reflected, mantribhiḥ ministers too, saṅvicāryaca deliberated, tataḥ then, pūrvadivasē forenoon, sarvagulmān all posts, avēkṣitum inspect, laṅkāṅpurīm Lanka city, yayau proceeded.

Ravana, the king of Rakshasas, reflected for a while and deliberated with his ministers and proceeded in the forenoon to inspect all posts in Lanka.
tāṅrākṣasagaṇairguptāṅgulmairbahubhirāvṛtām ।।6.57.3।।

dadarśanagarīṅlaṅkāṅpatākādhvajamālinīm .


laṅkāṅ Lanka, rākṣasagaṇaiḥ by Rakshasa army, guptām guarded, bahubhiḥ many, gulmaiḥ posts, āvṛtām surrounded, patākādhvajamālinīm with rows of flags and posts and pennants tāṅnagarīm that city, dadarśa saw.

Ravana saw Lanka guarded by the Rakshasa army, surrounded by many posts, with flags, posts, and pennants.
ruddhāṅtunagarīṅdṛṣṭavārāvaṇōrākṣasēśvaraḥ ।।6.57.4।।

uvācātmahitaṅkālēprahastaṅyuddhakōvidam .


rākṣasēśvaraḥ Lord of Rakshasas, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, ruddhām besieged, nagarīm city, dṛṣṭavā seeing, kālē time, yuddhakōvidam skilled in warfare, prahastam Prahastha, ātmahitam for his welfare, uvāca spoke.

Ravana, the Lord of Rakshasas seeing the city besieged, spoke to Prahastha who was skilled in warfare for his welfare.
purasyōpaniviṣṭasyasahasāpīḍitasyavā ।।6.57.5।।

nānyaṅyuddhātprapaśyāmimōkṣaṅyuddhaviśārada .


yuddhaviśārada knowledgeable in war, upaniviṣṭasya to deliver, sahasā suddenly, pīḍitasya oppressed, purasya city's, yuddhāt from war, anyam others, mōkṣam can liberate, napravaśyāmi not able to know.

"I am not able to see anyone (other than you) knowledgeable in warfare to deliver the city oppressed suddenly and can liberate from war."
ahaṅvākumbhakarṇōvātvaṅvāsēnāpatirmama ।।6.57.6।।

indrajidvānikumbhōvāvahēyurbhāramīdṛśam .


ahaṅvā myself, kumbhakarṇōvā or Kumbhakarna, mama my, sēnāpatiḥ Commander-in-Chief, tvaṅvā or you, indrajidvā Indrajith, nikumbhōvā or Nikumbha, īdṛśam such, bhāram burden, vahēyuḥ undertake.

"Either myself or Kumbhakarna, or my Commander-in-Chief, or you, or Indrajith, or Nikumbha can undertake such a burden."
satvaṅbalamataśśīghramādāyaparigṛhyaca ।।6.57.7।।

vijayāyābhiniryāhiyatrasarvēvanaukasaḥ .


saḥtvam you, tataḥ therefore, śīghram quickly, balam army, ādāya getting, parigṛhyaca taking charge, vanaukasaḥ Vanaras, sarvē all, yatra there, vijayāya for conquering, abhiniryāhi are collected.

"Therefore, quickly get ready with the army and take charge for conquering the vanaras collected there."
niryāṇāyādēvatēnūnaṅcapalāharivāhinī ।।6.57.8।।

nardatāṅrākṣasēndrāṇāṅśrutvānādaṅdraviṣyati .


niryāṇāyādēva as soon as you go, tē they, nūnam surely, calitā unsettled, harivāhinī Vanara army, nardatām uproar, rākṣasēndrāṇām Rakshasas, nādam sound, śrutvā hearing, draviṣyati will run.

As soon as you go there surely the unsettled Vanara army will run away hearing the uproar and loud noise of Rakshasas.
capalāhyavinītāścacalacittāścavānarāḥ ।।6.57.9।।

nasahiṣyantitēnādaṅsiṅhanādamivadvipāḥ .


capalāḥ fickle minded, avinītāśca undisciplined, calacittāśca volatile, vānarāḥ Vanaras, dvipāḥ glowing, siṅhanādamiva like lions roar, tē you, nādam sound, nasahiṣyanti not endure.

"Vanaras, who are fickle minded, undisciplined and volatile, will not endure the roar of lions of glowing Rakshasas."
vidrutēcabalētasmin rāmaḥsaumitriṇāsaha ।।6.57.10।।

avaśastēnirālambaḥprahastavaśamēṣyati .


prahasta Prahastha, tasmin balē your force, vidrutē knowing, saumitriṇāsaha along with Saumithri, rāmaḥ Rama, avaśaḥ surely, nirālambaḥ helpless, vaśam fall into your power, ēṣyati will be.

"Prahastha! Knowing your strength, the helpless Vanaras will surely run away and along with Saumithri. Rama will fall into your power."
āpatsaṅśayitāśrēyōnātranissaṅśayīkṛtā ।।6.57.11।।

pratilōmānulōmaṅvāyadvānōmanyasēhitam .


atra then, saṅśayitā uncertain, āpat if it comes, śrēyaḥ good, nissaśayīkṛtā undesirable, na not, tu you, yat that, vā or, pratilōmānulōmaṅvā whether acceptable or not acceptable, hitam good, manyasē I think.

"If uncertain death comes it is good, not when it comes by not encountering. Think what is acceptable to you and what is not acceptable to you and that is acceptable to me."
rāvaṇēnaivamuktastuprahastōvāhinīpatiḥ ।।6.57.12।।

rākṣasēndramuvācēdamasurēndramivōśanā .


rāvaṇēna by Ravana, ēvam in that way, uktaḥ spoken, vāhinīpatiḥ Commander-in-Chief, uśanā preceptor of Rakshasas, asurēndramiva this way to the king of Rakshasas, rākṣasēndram Rakshasa Lord, idam thus, uvāca spoke.

Prahastha, the Commander-in-Chief having heard Ravana, replied to the king of Rakshasas just as the preceptor of Rakshasas spoke to Bali.
rājanmantritapūrvaṅnaḥkuśalaissahamantribhiḥ ।।6.57.13।।

vivādaścāpinōvṛttassamavēkṣyaparasparam .


rājan O King!, kuśalaiḥ capable, mantribhiḥsaha along with ministers, naḥ is it not, mantritapūrvam earlier, parasparam one another, samavēkṣya reviewed, naḥ is it not, vivādaśca controversy, vṛttaḥ arose.

"O king! This was deliberated with capable ministers earlier, is it not It was reviewed with one another, and controversy arose."
pradānēnatusītāyāḥśrēyōvyavasitaṅmayā ।।6.57.14।।

apradānēpunaryuddhaṅdṛṣṭamēttathaivanaḥ .


sītāyāḥ Sita, pradānēna by giving, mayā by me, śrēyaḥ beneficial, vyavasitam if not given, apradānēpunaḥ not given, naḥ if not, yuddham war, dṛṣṭamēva foreseen.

"If Sita is given away it is beneficial and if not given war is foreseen is known to us."
sō.haṅdānaiścamānaiścasatataṅpūjitastvayā ।।6.57.15।।

sāntvaiścavividhaiḥkālēkiṅnakuryāṅhitaṅtava .


kālē time comes, dānaiśca gifts, mānaiśca honours, vividhaiḥ many, sāntvaiśca praises, satatam always, tvayā by you, pūjitaḥ worshipped, saḥaham me all of you, tava your, kim why, nakuryām why will I not do

"You have always given me gifts, many honours and praises earlier and worshipped me. When time comes why will I not do"
nahimējīvitaṅrakṣyaṅputradāradhanānica ।।6.57.16।।

tvaṅpaśyamāṅjuhūṣantaṅtvadarthējīvitaṅyudhi .


mē I, jīvitam life, rakṣyam protection, nahi not only, putradāradhanānica sons, wife, wealth also, tvadarthē will not be spared, yudhi in war, jīvitam life, juhūṣantam willing to give up life, mām by me, tvam for you, paśya you may see.

"I do not need to protect my life, sons, wives and wealth also. I am willing to give up my life also in war for you. You will see."
ēvamuktvātubhartāraṅrāvaṇaṅvāhinīpatiḥ ।।6.57.17।।

uvācēdaṅbalādhyakṣānprahastaḥpurataḥsthitān .


vāhinīpatiḥ O Commander-in-Chief, prahastaḥ Prahastha, bhartāram protector, rāvaṇam Ravana, ēvam in that way, uktvā having said, purataḥ in front, sthitān stood, balādhyakṣān chief of army, idam this way, uvāca spoke.

Prahastha, having submitted to his king Ravana in that way, the Commander-in-Chief of the army commanded the army that stood before him.
mēśīghraṅrākṣasānāṅmahādbalam ।।6.57.18।।

madbhāṇābdāvēgēnahatānāṅśanicaraṇājirē .

adyahṛṣyantumāṅsādāḥpakṣiṇaḥkānanaukasāṅ ।।6.57.19।।


rākṣasānām Rakshasas, mahābalam great army, mē me, samānayata together, kānanaukasām carnivorous, pakṣiṇaḥ birds, madbāṇāca by my arrows, vēgēna speedily, raṇājirē to the battlefield, hatānām killed, māṅsādāḥ flesh, adya they, tṛpyantu will be satisfied.

"Get the great Rakshasa army together with me to the battlefield speedily. By my arrows all the carnivorous birds will be killed and satisfied with the flesh (of Vanaras) today", said Prahastha.
ityuktāstēprahastēnabalādhyakṣā: kṛtatvarā: .

balamudyōjayāmāsustasminrākṣasamandirē ।।6.57.20।।


kṛtatvarā: very soon, balādhyakṣāḥ commander in chief, ityuktā: spoken that way, prahastēna by Prahastha, tasmin in that way, rākṣasamandirē Rakshasa abode, balam troops, udyōjayāmāsuḥ mobilized.

As soon as the commander in chief ordered in that way, the Rakshasa troops mobilized in the abode of Rakshasas.
sābabhūvamuhūrtēnanigmarnānāvidhāyudhaiḥ .

laṅkārākṣasavīraistairgajairivasamākulā ।।6.57.21।।


muhūrtēna in a short while, sālaṅkā that Lanka, gajairiva of elephant size, bhīmaiḥ frightening, tai: they, nānāvidhāyudhaiḥ different kinds of weapons, taiḥ they, rākṣasavīraiḥ Rakshasa warriors, samākulā gathered, babhūva filled.

In a short while the whole of Lanka was filled with elephant size Rakshasa warriors gathered with different kinds of weapons.
hutāśanaṅtarpayatāṅbrāhmaṇāṅścanamasyatām .

ājyagandhaprativahaḥsurabhirmārutōvavau ।।6.57.22।।


hutāśanam propitiating fire, tarpayatām with offerings, brāhmaṇāṅśca to the brahmanas, namasyatām worshipping, ājyagandhaprativahaḥ air with fragrance of ghee and flowers, surabhaḥ very pleasant, mārutaḥ blew, vanau past.

A fragrant breeze blew past there with Rakshasas propitiating fire god, with offerings and by the worshipping of brahmins the air was pleasant filled with the fragrance of ghee and flowers.
srajaścavividhākārājagṛhustvabhimantritāḥ .

saṅgrāmasajjāḥsamhṛṣṭādharāyanrākṣasāstadā ।।6.57.23।।


tadā then, saṅgrāmasajjāḥ military weapons and articles, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasa, vividhākārāḥ of different form, abhimantritāḥ consecrated with chanting, srajaśca flower garland s, jagṛhuḥ went, samhṛṣṭāḥ rejoiced, dharāyan wore.

Then the Rakshasas rejoiced, wishing victory, consecrated military material with chanting and wore flower garland s.
sadhanuṣkāḥkavacinōvēgādāplutyarākṣasāḥ .

rāvaṇaṅprēkṣyarājānaṅprahastaṅparyavārayan ।।6.57.24।।


sadhanuṣkāḥ bows, kavacinaḥ shields, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, rājānam to the king, rāvaṇam Ravana, prēkṣya looking at, vēgāt swiftly, āplutya greeting, prahastam Prahastha, paryavārayan surrounded.

Wearing bows and shields, looking at and greeting the king Ravana, they swiftly surrounded Prahastha.
athāmantṟyaturājānaṅbhērīmāhatyabhairavām .

ārurōharathaṅyuktaḥprahastassajjakalpitam ।।6.57.25।।

hayairmahājavairyuktaṅsamyaksūtasusaṅyatam .

mahājaladanirghōṣaṅsākṣāccandrārkabhāsvaram ।।6.57.26।।

uragadhvajadurdharṣaṅsuvarūthaṅsvavaskaram .

suvarṇajālasaṅyuktaṅprahasantamivaśriyā ।।6.57.27।।


atha and then, yuktaḥ taking leave, prahastaḥ Prahastha, rājānam King, āmantya causing, bhairavām terrific, bhērīm drums, āhatya blowing, sajjakalpitam equipped for fight, mahājavaiḥ of good speed, hayaiḥ horses, yuktam driven by, samyak capable, sūtasusaṅyutam with charioteer, mahājaladanirghōṣam sounding like thundering cloud, sākṣāt just as, candrārkabhāsvaram shining like sun and moon, uragadhvaja with serpent sign on, durdharṣam difficult to overpower, suvarūtham provided with a wooden fence, svavaskaram as defence against collision, suvarṇajālasaṅyuktam covered with net of gold, śriyā splendour, prahasantamiva as if laughing, ratham chariot, ārurōha ascended.

Taking leave of the king and causing terrific sound of blowing of drums, Prahastha, ascended, laughing on to a splendorous chariot, equipped to fight, driven by horses endowed with good speed and capable charioteer, sounding like a thundering cloud, shining like the sun and moon, with a sign of serpent on flag, provided with a wooden fence for defence, which was difficult to collide, covered with gold net.
tatastaṅrathamāsthāyarāvaṇārpitaśāsanaḥ .

laṅkāyāniryayautūrṇaṅbalēnamahatāvṛtaḥ ।।6.57.28।।


tataḥ then, rāvaṇārpitaśāsanaḥ by the order of Ravana, ratham chariot, āsthāya taking seat, mahatā great, balēna army, vṛtaḥ surrounded by, tūrṇam immediately, laṅkāyāḥ from Lanka, niryayau departed.

Then, by the order of Ravana, Prahastha set out immediately and departed from Lanka taking a se at in the chariot, surrounded by the great army.
tatōdundhubhinirghōṣaḥparjanyaninadōpamaḥ .

vāditrāṇāṅcaninadaḥpūrayannivamēdinīm ।।6.57.29।।

śuśruvēśaṅkhaśabdaścaprayātēvāhinīpatau .


vāhinīpatau Commander-in-Chief of the army, prayātē departed, tataḥ there, parjanyaninadōpamaḥ arose sounds, dundhubhinirghōṣaḥ sounds of kettle drums, vāditrāṇām blasts of fanfares, ninadaḥca noise, śaṅkhaśabdaśca also sounds of conchs, mēdinīm earth, pūrayanniva filling, śuśruvē was heard.

As the Commander-in-Chief was going there arose sounds of kettle drums, blasts of fanfares, and noise of blasts of conchs filling the earth was heard.
ninadantassvarānghōrānrākṣasājagmuragrataḥ ।।6.57.30।।

bhīmarūpāmahākāyāḥprahastasyapurassarāḥ .


bhīmarūpāḥ of fierce appearance, mahākāyāḥ endowed with huge body, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasa, ghōrān dreadful, svarān voice, ninadantaḥ making sound, prahastasyaḥ Prahastha's, purassarā marching:, agrataḥ in front, jagmuḥ went.

Rakshasas of fierce appearance, of huge body size, making dreadful sounds went marching ahead of Prahastha.
narāntakaḥkumbhahanurmahānādassamunnataḥ ।।6.57.31।।

prahastasacivāhyētēniryayuḥparivāryatam .


narāntaka Naranthaka, kumbhahanuḥ Kumbhahanu, mahānādaḥ Mahanada, samunnataḥ Samunnatha, prahastasacivāḥ Prahastha's adjutants, ētē these, tam with, parivārya surrounded, niryayuḥ went.

sāgarapratimaughēnavṛtastēnabalēnasaḥ ।।6.57.33।।

prahastōniryayaukruddhaḥkālāntakayamōpamaḥ .


kālāntakayamōpamaḥ Kala, Anthaka and Yama, kruddhaḥ enraged, saḥprahastaḥ that Prahastha, sāgarapratimaughēna like an ocean, tēna by that, balēna forces, vṛtaḥ surrounded, niryayau emerged.

Prahastha emerged in rage surrounded by his forces which was like an ocean that resembled Kala (time spirit), Anthaka (death) and Yama (God of death).
tasyaniryāṇaghōṣēṇarākṣasānāṅcanardatām ।।6.57.34।।

laṅkāyāṅsarvabhūtānivinēdurvikṛtaissvaraiḥ .


tasya by the, niryāṇaghēṣēṇa sounds that emerged at departure, nardatām roaring, rākṣasānāṅca Rakshasas also, laṅkāyām in Lanka, sarvabhūtāni all beings, vikṛtaiḥ unnatural way, svaraiḥ tone, vinēduḥ shrieked.

By the sounds of roaring that emerged at the departure of the Rakshasas all beings of Lanka shrieked in unnatural ways.
vyabhramākāśamāviśyamāṅsaśōṇitabhōjanāḥ ।।6.57.35।।

maṇḍalānyapasavyānikhagāścakrūrathaṅprati .


māṅsaśōṇitabhōjanāḥ living on flesh and blood, khagāḥ birds, vyabhram circled, ākāśam in the sky, āviśya reaching, rathaṅprati round the chariot, apasavyāni in anticlockwise, maṇḍalāni round, cakruḥ went.

The birds living on flesh and blood reached the sky and circled anticlockwise around the chariot.
samnatyaḥpāvakajvālāḥśivāghōrāvavāśirē ।।6.57.36।।

antarikṣātpapātōlkāvāyuścaparuṣaṅvanau .


ghōrāḥ dreadful, śivāḥ jackals, pāvakajvālāḥ tongues of fire, vamnatyaḥ vomiting, vavāśirē howled, antarikṣāt from the sky, ulkā meteor, papāta fell, vāyuśca wind blew, paruṣam violent, vavau wind blew.

A meteor fell from the sky, the wind blew violently. Jackals howled vomiting tongues of fire.
anyōnyamabhisaṅrabdhāgrahāścanacakāśirē ।।6.57.37।।

mēghāścakharanirghōṣārathasyōparirakṣasaḥ .

vavṛṣaṅrudhiraṅcāsyasiṣicuścapurassarān ।।6.57.38।।


anyōnyam one another, abhisaṅrabdāḥ clashing, nacakāśirē not shine, rakṣasaḥ Rakshasas, rathasya chariot's, upari top, mēghāśca like cloud, kharanirghōṣāḥ violent like donkeys, rudhiram blood, vavṛrṣuḥ rained, puraḥsarān marching, siṣicuśca drenched.

The planets clashing with one another did not shine. The clouds were violent like donkeys and rained blood on top of the chariot and the marching Rakshasas drenched.
kēturmūrdhanigṛdhrō.syanilīnōdakṣiṇāmukhaḥ .

tudannubhayataḥpārśvaṅsamagrāmaharatprabhām ।।6.57.39।।


dakṣiṇāmukhaḥ facing south, kētōḥ banner, mūrdhani top, nilīnaḥ surrounded, gṛdhraḥ vulture, asya its, ubhayataḥ both, pārśvam sides, tudan scratching, samagrām entire, śriyam prosperity, aharat snatched.

Seeing a vulture sitting on the banner (of Prahastha) facing south scratching both sides, Prahastha became pale as if the entire prosperity had been snatched away.
sārathērbhahuśaścāsyasaṅgrāmamavagāhataḥ .

pratōdōnyapataddhastātsūtasyahayasādinaḥ ।।6.57.40।।


saṅgrāmam war, avagāhataḥ knower, sūtasya charioteer, hayasādinaḥ controlling the horses, sārathēḥ charioteer, hastāt from hand, pratōdaḥ whip, asya his, bahuśaḥ many times, nyapatat slipped.

A charioteer and knower of controlling the horses, the whip slipped many times from his hand.
niryāṇaśrīścayā.syāsīdbhāsvarāvasudurlabhāḥ .

sānanāśamuhūrtēnasamēcaskhalitāhayāḥ ।।6.57.41।।


bhāsvarā splendour, vasudurlabhā that which is difficult, yā for, niryāṇaśrī disappeared, sā that, muhūrtēna moment, nanāśa destroyed, hayāśca even horses, samē even ground, skhalitāḥ stumbled.

The splendour of Prahastha which is difficult to destroy, disappeared at that moment and the horses stumbled on even ground.
prahastaṅtvabhiniryāntaṅprakhyātabalapauruṣam .

yudhinānāpraharaṇākapisēnā.bhyavartata ।।6.57.42।।


prakhyātabalapauruṣam well known for the valour, abhiniryāntam coming towards, tuprahastam on the part of Prahastha, nānāpraharaṇā various weapons, kapisēnā monkey army, yudhi in war, abhyavartata stood facing.

Seeing Prahastha, who is well known for his valour coming towards, for war with various weapons, the monkey army stood facing.
athaghōṣassutumulōharīṇāṅsamajāyata .

vṛkṣānārujatāṅcaivagurvīrāgṛhṇatāṅśilāḥ ।।6.57.43।।


atha and then vṛkṣān trees, ārujatāṅcaiva for the sake of fighting, gurvīḥ heavy, śilāḥ rocks, āgṛhṇatām taking hold, harīṇām monkeys, sutumulaḥ exceedingly, ghōṣaḥ tumultuous, samajāyata arose.

And when the monkeys took hold of heavy rocks and trees for fighting exceedingly tumultuous clamor arose.
nadatāṅrākṣasānāṅcavānarāṇāṅcagarjatām .

ubhēpramuditēsainyērakṣōgaṇavanaukasām ।।6.57.44।।

vēgitānāṅsamarthānāmanyōnyavadhakāṅ kṣiṇām .

parasparaṅcāhvayatāṅninādśūyatēmahān ।।6.57.45।।


nadatām yelling noise, rākṣasānāṅca of Rakshasas, garjatām roaring, vānarāṇāṅca noise of Vanaras, ubhē both, sainyē army, pramuditē highly rejoiced, vēgitānām seized with speed, samarthānām powerful, anyōnyavadhakāṅ kṣiṇām who sought the destruction of one another, parasparam one another, āhvayatām challenging, rakṣōgaṇavanaukasām armies of Rakshasas and Vanaras, mahān huge, ninādaḥ roar, śrūyatē was heard.

The yelling noise of Rakshasas and roaring noise of Vanaras of both armies, who were powerful and seized with speed, who sought the destruction of one another, challenging noises of Rakshasas and Vanaras, highly rejoiced, was heard.
tataḥprahastaḥkapirājavāhinīmabhipratasthēvijayāyadurmatiḥ .

vivṛddhavēgaṅścavivēśatāṅcamūṅyathāmumūrṣuśśalabhōvibhāvasum ।।6.57.46।।
