Sloka & Translation

[Tormented by the grief of Prahastha's death, Ravana himself comes to the battlefield. Tough fight between Ravana and Sugriva, Hanuman, Neela, and Lakshmana. Ravana meets Rama in the battlefield. Ravana sustains an ignominious defeat at the hand s of Rama, escapes and returns back to Lanka.]

tasminhatērākṣasasainyapālēplavaṅgamānāmṛṣabhēṇayuddhē .

bhīmayudhaṅsāgaratulyavēgaṅvidudruvērākṣasarājasainyam ।।6.59.1।।


rākṣasasainyapālē commander in chief of the army, tasmin in that, yuddhē war, plavaṅgamānām ṛṣabhēṇa bull of the Vanaras, Neela nihatē has been killed, bhīmāyudham with dreadful weapons, sāgaratulyavēgam like the ocean in fury, rākṣasarājasainyam Rakshasa king's army, vidudruvē ran.

Commander in chief of the Rakshasa army killed by Neela, the bull of Vanaras, the army Rakshasas with dreadful weapons which were like the fury of an ocean, ran.
gatvā.tharakṣōdhipatēśśaśaṅsussēnāpatiṅpāvakasūnuśastam .

tacchāpitēṣāṅvacanaṅniśamyarakṣōdhipaḥkrōdhavaśaṅjagāma ।।6.59.2।।


atha and then, gatvā having gone, sēnāpatim commander in chief, pāvakasūnuśastam son of firegod killed, rakṣōdhipatēḥ king of Rakshasas, śaśaṅsuḥ the survivors, rakṣōdhipaḥ king of Rakshasas, tēṣām in that way, tat thereafter, vacanam words, niśamya revealed, krōdhavaśam under the spell of anger, jagāma became.

Having gone to the king of Rakshasas, the survivors said, "Prahastha is killed by the son of fire god." Thereafter, the king of Rakshasas fell prey to anger.
saṅ khyēprahastaṅnihataṅniśamyaśōkārditaḥkrōdhaparītacētāḥ .

uvācatānrākṣasayūthamukhyānindrōyathānirjarayōthamukhyān ।।6.59.3।।


saṅ khyē relating to, prahastam Prahastha, nihatam death, niśamya revealed, śōkārditaḥ sorrowful, krōdhaparītacētāḥ tormented with anger, indraḥ Indra, nirjarayōthamukhyāviva commanders of celestial troops, tān to them, rākṣasayūthamukhyān to the Rakshasa troops, uvāca said.

Even as Rakshasas revealed about Prahastha's death, tormented by grief and anger Ravana spoke to Rakshasa troops just as Indra spoke to celestial troops.
nāvajñāripavēkāryāyairindrabalasūdanaḥ .

sūditassainyapālōmēsānuyātrassakuñjaraḥ ।।6.59.4।।


indrabalasādanaḥ one who is capable of destroying Indra's army, sānuyātraḥ followers, sakuñjaraḥ elephants, mēsainyapālaḥ my commander in chief, yaiḥ he who, sūditaḥ capable of killing, ripavē with regard to enemy, avajñā low opinion, nakāryā not to think.

"No low opinion to be entertained with regard to an enemy by whom my commander in chief of the army was killed, who is capable of killing the army of Indra with his followers and elephants."
sō.haṅripuvināśāyavijayāyāvicārayan .

svayamēvagamiṣyāmiraṇaśīrṣaṅtadadbhutam ।।6.59.5।।


saḥ he aham I, avicārayan without thinking, ripuvināśāya to put an end to the enemy, vijayāya for success, adbhutam wonderful, tat that, raṇaśīrṣam battle scene, svayamēva I shall myself, gamiṣyāmi will go.

"I shall go myself without thinking to that wonderful battle scene and put an end to the enemy and succeed."
adyatadvānarānīkaṅrāmaṅcasahalakṣmaṇam .

nirdahiṣyāmibāṇaughairvanaṅdīpssairivānagibhiḥ ।।6.59.6।।


adya now, tat that, vānarānīkam army of Vanaras, sahalakṣmaṇam along with Lakshmana, rāmaṅca and Rama, dīpssaiḥ burn, anagibhiḥ without the use of fire, vanamiva like a forest, bāṇaughaiḥ with streams of arrows, nirdhahiṣyāmi burn up.

"Now I will go and burn up that army of Vanaras along with Lakshmana and Rama with the stream of my arrows just as forest fire without the use of fire."
saēvamuktvājvalanaprakāśaṅrathaṅturaṅgōttamarājayuktam .

prakāśamānaṅvapuṣājvalantaṅsamārurōhāmararājaśatruḥ ।।6.59.7।।


amararājaśatruḥ enemy of king of Devatas, saḥ he, ēvam in that way, uktvā having said, jvalanaprakāśam luminous like fire, turaṅgōttamarājayuktam yoked to the best of horses, prakāśamānam blazing, vapuṣā by virtue of its form (golden), jvalantam shining, ratham chariot, samārurōha ascended.

Ravana, the enemy of the king of Devatas, having spoken like that ascended a chariot yoked to the best of horses, shining by virtue of its form (golden) and luminous like fire.
saśaṅkhabhērīpaṇavapraṇādairāsphōṭitakṣēḷvitasiṅhanādaiḥ .

puṇyaisstavaiścāpyabhipūjyamānastadāyayaurākṣasarājamukhya:।। 6.59.8।।


tadā then, rākṣasarājamukhyaḥ foremost king of the Rakshasas, saḥ he, śaṅkhabhērīpaṇavapraṇādaiḥ blast of conchs, beat of drums, and clapping of arms asphōṭitakṣēḷvitasiṅhanādaiḥ clapping of arms and sounds like the roar of a lion, puṇyaiḥ chanting sounds of agreeable verses, stavaiścāpi eulogizing, abhipūjyamānaḥ honoured very highly, yayau went forth.

As the foremost king of the Rakshasas went forth, a blast of sounds of conchs, beat of drums and clapping of arms and the roaring sounds followed by the chanting of auspicious verses sung by the Rakshasas eulogizing and honouring the king highly.
saśailajīmūntikāśarūpairmāṅsādanaiḥpāvakadīptanētraiḥ .

babhauvṛtōrākṣasarājamukhyōbhūtairvṛtōrudraivāsurēśaḥ ।।6.59.9।।


śailajīmūntikāśarūpaiḥ by forms that resembled mountains and clouds, pāvaka dīptanētraiḥ whose eyes were like fire, māṅsāśanaiḥ flesh eaters, saḥ he, rākṣasarājamukhyaḥ Rakshasa king, bhūtaiḥ by Rakshasas, vṛtaḥ surrounded, asurēśaḥ asuras, rudruḥiva like Rudra, babhau seemed.

The Rakshasa king surrounded by Rakshasas who resembled mountains and clouds in form seemed like Rudra surrounded by asuras.
tatōnagaryāssahasāmahaujāniṣkramyatadvānarasainyamugram .

mahārṇavābhrastanitaṅdadarśasamudyataṅpādapaśailahastam ।।6.59.10।।


tataḥ thereafter, mahaujāḥ possessed with great splendour, sahasā forcibly, nagaryāḥ at the city, niṣkramya stopped, ugram in front, mahārṇavābhrastanitam resembling great ocean and cloud, samudyatam collected together, pādapaśailahastam taking trees and rocks, tat vānarasainyam the Vanara army, dadarśa saw.

Thereafter, Ravana possessed with great splendour stopped at the city and saw the army of Vanaras collected together looking like an ocean of clouds wielding trees and rocks.
tadrākṣasānīkamatipracaṇḍamālōkyarāmōbhujagēndrabāhuḥ .

vibhīṣaṇaṅśastrabhṛtāṅvariṣṭhamuvācasēvānugataḥpṛthuśrīḥ ।।6.59.11।।


bhujagēndrabāhuḥ whose arms are like king of serpents (smooth and strong), sēvānugataḥ followed by army, pṛthuśrīḥ shining with splendour, rāmaḥ Rama, atipracaṇḍam exceedingly furious, tat that, rākṣasānīkam Rakshasa army, ālōkya seeing, śastrabhṛtām wielder of weapons, variṣṭham foremost, vibhīṣaṇam Vibheeshana, uvāca spoke.

Rama, whose arms were like the king of serpents, shining with splendour, followed by army, seeing the army of Rakshasas exceedingly furious, spoke to Vibheeshana the foremost of the wielder of weapons.
nānāpatākadhvajaśastrajuṣṭaṅprāsāsiśūlāyuthavajrajuṣṭam .

kasyēdamakṣōbhyamabhīrujuṣṭaṅmahēndrōpamanāgajuṣṭam ।।6.59.12।।


nānāpatākadhvajaśastrajuṣṭam several kinds of flags, posts and weapons, prāsāsiśūlāyuthavajrajuṣṭam armed with missiles, tridents, and weapons like darts, swords and spikes, abhīrujuṣṭam unshakeable, mahēndrōpamanāgajuṣṭam elephants of the size of Mahendra mountain, akṣōbhyam soldiers, idam this, sainyam army, kasya whose.

"Under whose command is this unshakeable army with several kinds of flags, posts and weapons armed with missiles, tridents, swords spikes and darts, with elephants the size of Mahendra mountain"
tatasturāmasyaniśamyavākyaṅvibhīṣaṇaṅśśakrasamānavīryaḥ .

śaśaṅsarāmasyabalapravēgaṅmahātmanāṅrākṣasapuṅgavānām ।।6.59.13।।


tataḥ thereupon, śakrasamānavīryaḥ hero equal to Indra, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, rāmasya Rama's, vākyam words, niśamya on hearing, mahātmanām great soul, rākṣasapuṅgavānām among the Rakshasa leaders, balapravēgam endowed with great strength, rāmasya to Rama, śaśaṅsa revealed.

Thereupon, Vibheeshana, equal to Indra in valour, on hearing the great soul Rama, revealed about the Rakshasa army endowed with great strength.
yō.saugajaskandhagatōmahātmānavōditārkōpamatāmravaktraḥ .

prakampayannāgaśirō.bhyupaitihyakampanaṅtvēnamavēhirājan ।।6.59.14।।


rājan king!, gajaskandhagataḥ by whom seated on the elephant, is shaking (by his weight) the elephant's head, navōditārkōpamatāmravaktraḥ coppery face resembles rising Sun, mahātmā great, yaḥasau he who, nāgaśiraḥ mounted on elephant, saṅkampayan Akampana, abhyupaiti gigantic, ēnam he is, akampanam Akampana, avēhi know.

"O King! the one seated on the elephant, by whose weight the elephant head is shaking, whose coppery face is like the rising sun, a gigantic one is Akampana."
yō.saurathasthōmṛgarājakēturdūnvasthindanuśśakradhanuḥprakāśam .

karīvabhātyugravivṛttadaṅṣṭrassaindrajinnāmavarapradhānaḥ ।।6.59.15।।


rathasthaḥ from the chariot, mṛgarājakētuḥ distinguished by the sign of lion, śakradhanuḥprakāśam splendid as the bow of Indra, dhanuḥ bow, dhunvan making sound, yaḥasau he who, ugravivṛttadaṅṣṭraḥ with terrific teeth projected forward, karīva elephant, bhāti looks like, saḥ he, varapradhānaḥ eminent by the boons bestowed, indrajit nāma Indrajith by name.

"The one on the chariot, distinguished by the sign of a lion, and making sound with his bow, splendid as Indra's bow with terrific teeth projected forward looks like an elephant, eminent by virtue of the boons bestowed is Indrajith by name."
yaścaiṣavnidhyāstamahēndrakalpōdhanvīrathasthō.tirathōtivīraḥ .

viṣpārayan cāpamatulyamānaṅnāmnātikāyō.tivivṛddhakāyaḥ ।।6.59.16।।


vnidhyāstamahēndrakalpaḥ resembles Vindhya mountain in the west and Mahendra mountain, dhanvī stretching his bow and making sound, rathasthaḥ from the chariot, atirathaḥ great chariot warrior, ativīraḥ great hero, atulyamānam unequalled in size, cāpam bow, viṣpārayan yonder, ativivṛddhakāyaḥ body grown out of size, yaḥēṣaḥ he in that way, ayam coming in sight, nāmnā named, atikāyaḥ Atikaya.

"He who resembles Vindhya Mountain in the west (where the sun sets) and the Mahendra mountain (in size) seated on the chariot, is a great chariotwarrior, a hero unequalled in size, wielding a bow whose body is grown out of size, who is coming in sight is by name Atikaya."
yō.saunavārkōditatāmracakṣurāruhyaghaṇṭāninadapraṇādam .

gajaṅkharaṅgarjativaimahātmāmahōdarōnāmasaēṣaḥvīraḥ ।।6.59.17।।


navārkōditatāmracakṣuḥ whose eyes are coppery red in anger, yaḥasau he Oh!, ghaṇṭaninadapraṇādam whose trumpeting resembles beating of bells, gajam elephant, āruhya mounted, kharam harsh, garjati roars, mahātmā great, saḥēṣaḥvīraḥ he in that way a courageous one, mahōdarōnāma by name Mahodara.

"He whose eyes are coppery red in anger, who rides on elephant resembles the beating of bells, roars in harsh tone are a great courageous one by the name Mahodara."
yō.sauhayaṅkāñcanacitrabhāṇḍamāruhyasandhyābhragiriprakāśam .

prāsaṅsamudyamyamarīcinaddhaṅpiśācaēṣō.śanitulyavēgaḥ ।।6.59.18।।


sandhyābhragiriprakāśam shining like a mountain crowned with cloud, yaḥ he, asau Oh!, kāñcanacitrabhāṇḍam decorated with gold jewels, hayam horses, āruhya mounted, marīcinaddham radiant like the Sun, prāsam holding the yoke, samudyamya ascended, ēṣaḥ in that way, aśanitulyavēgaḥ of high speed, piśācaḥ Pisacha.

"He who is mounted on horses decorated with gold shining, like a mountain crowned with cloud, radiant as the Sun holding the shining yokes coming at high speed is by name Pisacha."
yaścaiṣaśūlaṅniśitaṅpragṛhyavidyutprabhaṅkiṅkaravajravēgam .

vṛṣēndramāsthāyagiriprakāśamāyātiyō.sautriśirāyaśasvī ।।6.59.19।।


yaḥēṣaḥ he in that way, niśitam firmly, vidyutprabham shining like lightning, kiṅkaravajravēgam surpassing the thunderbolt in speed, śūlam trident, pragṛhya seizing, giriprakāśam shining like mountain, vṛṣēndram Lordly bull, āruhya riding, āyāti coming, saḥasau he is, yaśasvī famous, yaḥ he, triśirāḥ Trisira.

"He who comes firmly shining like lightning, surpassing thunderbolt in speed, seizing a trident, riding a Lordly bull shining like a mountain is the famous Trisira."
asaucajīmūtanikāśarūpaḥkumbhaḥpṛthuvyūḍhasujātavakṣāḥ .

samāhitaḥpannagarājakēturviṣpārayanyātidhanurvidhūnvan ।।6.59.20।।


jīmūtanikāśarūpaḥ in the form of cloud, pṛthuvyūḍhasujātavakṣāḥ of fleshy well shaped broad chest, samāhitaḥ fully prepared, pannagarājakētuḥ with the sign of the king of serpents, asau he is, kumbhaṅ Kumbha, dhanuḥ bow, vidhūnvan , viṣpārayan stretching, yāti there comes.

"There comes Kumbha whose form is like a cloud in form, whose chest is fleshy and broad. He is fully prepared, coming with a sign of the king of serpents (Vasuki) stretching his bow."
yaścaiṣajāmbūnadavajrajuṣṭaṅdīptaṅsadhūmaṅparighaṅpragṛhya .

āyātirakṣōbalakētubhūtaḥsō.saunikumbhō.dbhutaghōrakarmā ।।6.59.21।।


yaḥēṣaḥ he in that way, jāmbūnadavajrajuṣṭam studded with gold and diamonds, dīptam shining, sadhūmam smoky, parigham iron club, pragṛhya seizing, āyāti comes, saḥasau he is, rakṣōbalakētubhūtaḥ chief of all Rakshasa army, adbhutaghōrakarmā capable of wonderful and terrible deeds, nikumbhaḥ Nikumbha.

"There comes Nikumbha, studded with gold and diamonds, shining and smoky, who is the chief of Rakshasa army seizing an iron club, is capable of wonderful and terrific deeds."
yaścaiṣacāpāsiśaraughajuṣṭaṅpatākinaṅpāvakadīptarūpam .

rathaṅsamāsthāyavibhātyudagrōnarāntakō.saunagaśṛṅgayōdhī ।।6.59.22।।


cāpāsiśaraughajuṣṭam with multitude of swords and arrows, patākinam with flags, pāvakadīptarūpam blazing like fire, ratham chariot, samāsthāya mounted on, yaḥēṣaḥ he that way, vibhāti glorious, udagraḥ on top, asau he is, nagaśṛṅgayōdhī fights with mountain peaks, narāntakaḥ Naranthaka.

Again, comes Naranthaka, with multitude of swords and arrows, mounted on top of a chariot with flags, blazing like fire, who fights with mountain peaks.
yaścaiṣanānāvidhaghōrarūpairvyāghrōṣṭranāgēndramṛgāśvavaktrai: .

bhūtairvṛtōbhātivivṛttanētsraisō.sausurāṇāmapidarpahantā ।।6.59.23।।

traitadindupratimaṅvibhātichatraṅsitaṅsūkṣmaśalākamagyram .

atraiṣarakṣōdhipatirmahātmābhūtairvṛtōrudraivāvabhāti ।।6.59.24।।


yaḥēṣaḥ he that way, nānāvidhaghōrarūpaiḥ surrounded by several hideous forms, vyāghrōṣṭranāgēndramṛgāśvavaksraiḥ heads of tigers, camels, Lordly elephants, deer and horses, vivṛttanētraiḥ rolling eyes, bhūtaiḥ ghosts, vṛtaḥ surrounded, bhāti remains, saḥasau he is, surāṇāmapi even for Devatas, darpahantā humbles pride, ēṣaḥ that way, mahātmā great, rakṣōdhipatiḥ king of Rakshasas, indupratimam like moon, sūkṣmaśalākam white canopy, agyram slender, sitam ribs, chatram umbrella, yatra there, vibhāti shines, atra there, bhūtaiḥ beings, vṛtaḥ surrounded, rudraḥiva like Rudra, vibhāti shines.

"One who is surrounded by several hideous forms, like heads of tigers, camels, Lordly elephants and horses, rolling eyes, just as Rudra by his attendants, who is surrounded by Rakshasas and is humbled by the pride of even Devatas, over him shines the white canopy resembling the moon with slender ribs is the king of Rakshasas."
asaukirīṭīcalakuṇḍalāsyōnagēndravindhyōpamabhīmakāyaḥ .

mahēndravaivasvatadarpahantārakṣōdhipassūryaivāvabhāti ।।6.59.25।।


kirīṭī decked with crown, calakuṇḍalāsyaḥ countenance with hanging earrings, nagēndravindhyōpamabhīmakāyaḥ of terrible form like Himalayas and Vindhya, mahēndravaivasvatadarpahantā who has humbled the pride of Mahendra and Yama, rakṣōdhipaḥ king of Rakshasas, sūryaḥiva like Sun, avabhāti shining.

"There is the king of Rakshasas shining like Sun, whose countenance shines with hanging earrings, of terrible form like the Himalayas and Vindhya, who has humbled the pride of Mahendra and Yama."
pratyuvācatatōrāmōvibhīṣaṇamarindam .

ahōdīptamahātējārāvaṇōrākṣasēśvaraḥ ।।6.59.26।।


tataḥ then, arindamaḥ scourge of enemies, rāmaḥ Rama, vibhīṣaṇam Vibheeshana, pratyuvāca replied, ahō Oh, rākṣasēśvaraḥ Rakshasa king, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, dīptamahātējāḥ endowed with great luminous glory.

Then Rama the scourge of enemies replied Vibheeshana, "Oh! Ravana! King of Rakshasas is endowed with luminous glory."
ādityaivaduṣprēkṣyōraśmibhirbhātirāvaṇaḥ .

suvyaktaṅlakṣyatēhyasyarūpaṅtējaḥsamāvṛtam ।।6.59.27।।


rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, raśmibhiḥ blazing, ādityaḥiva like the Sun, duṣprēkṣya difficult to gaze, bhāti shining, asya his, tējaḥsamāvṛtam brilliance spread all over, rūpam form, suvyaktam to discern, lakṣyatēhi not perceptible.

"Ravana blazing like the sun is difficult to gaze even. His shine is spread all over and not perceptible to discern."
dēvadānavavīrāṇāṅvapurnaivaṅvidhaṅbhavēt .

yādṛśaṅrākṣasēndrasyavapurētatprakāśatē ।।6.59.28।।


dēvadāvanavīrāṇām among the Devas and Danavas, vapuḥ brilliance, rākṣasēndrasya Ravana's, ētat such, vapuḥ brilliance, yādṛśam , prakāśatē shines, ēvaṅvidham like this, nabhavēt not brightly.

Among the Devas and Danavas such brilliance is not there. He shines so brightly.
sarvēparvatasaṅkāśāssarvēparvatayōdhinaḥ .

sarvēdīptāyudhadharāyōdhāścāsyamahōjasa:।। 6.59.29।।


mahōjasa: great warriors, asya of him, yōdhāḥ in war, sarvē all, parvatasaṅkāśāḥ like mountain, sarvē all, parvatayōdhinaḥ fight with mountains, sarvē all, dīptāyudhadharāḥ glowing weapons.

"The great warriors of Ravana fighting in war are like mountains and all fought with mountains and glowing weapons."
bhātirakṣōrājō.saupradīpttairbhīmavikramaiḥ .

bhūtaiḥparivṛtastīkṣṇairdēhavadbhirivāntakaḥ ।।6.59.30।।


pradīpttai: shining brilliance, bhīmavikramaiḥ of terrible valour, tīkṣṇaiḥ sharp, dēhavadbhiḥ furious forms, parivṛta surrounded by, bhūtaiḥ beings, asau oh, rakṣōrājaḥ Rakshasa king, antakaḥiva like god of death, bhāti shining.

"The Rakshasa king is surrounded by sharp, furious beings of terrible valour shining like the god of death."
diṣṭyā.yamadyapāpātmāmamadṛṣṭipathaṅgataḥ .

adyakrōdhaṅvimōkṣyāmisītāharaṇasambhavam ।।6.59.31।।


diṣṭyā by good luck, pāpātmā sinful, ayam he, mama my, dṛṣṭipatham my sight, gataḥ gone, adya come, sītāharaṇasambhavam Sita's abduction, krōdham wrath, vimōkṣyāmi give vent.

"By his good luck, this sinful one has come under my sight. I will give vent to my wrath born of Sita's abduction."
ēvamuktvātatōrāmōdhanurādāyavīryavān .

lakṣmaṇānucarastasthausamuddhṛtyaśarōttamam ।।6.59.32।।


vīryavān indomitable, rāmaḥ Rama, ēvam in that manner, uktvā having spoken, tataḥ then, dhanuḥ bow, ādāya taking out, śarōttamam excellent, samuddhṛtya got ready, lakṣmaṇānucaraḥ Lakshmana as follower, tasthau stood.

Indomitable Rama having spoken in that manner, followed by Lakshmana got ready and took out an excellent bow and stood.
tataḥsarakṣōdhipatirmahātmārakṣāṅsitānyāhamahābalāni .

dvārēṣucaryāgṛhagōpurēṣusunirvṛtāstiṣṭhatanirviśaṅkāḥ ।।6.59.33।।


tataḥ thereupon, mahātmā great soul, saḥ he, rakṣōdhipatiḥ Rakshasa king, mahābalāni strong army, tāni them, rakṣāṅsi Rakshasas, āha you, dvārēṣu at gates, caryāgṛhagōpurēṇu buildings on the four main streets, sunirvṛtāḥ fully complacent, nirviśaṅkāḥ free from apprehension, tiṣṭhata stationed.

There upon the great soul, the king of Rakshasas thus spoke to the strong army of Rakshasas, "Fully complacent, free from any apprehension be stationed at the gates and the buildings of the four main streets."
hā.gataṅmāṅsahitaṅbhavadbhirvanaukasaśchidramidaṅviditvā .

śūnyāpurīṅduṣprasahāṅpramathyapradharṣayēyussahasāsamētāḥ ।।6.59.34।।


bhavadbhiḥ me also, sahitam with you, mām me, iha here, āgatam coming to know my coming, idam this, chidram weak side, viditvā knowing, vanaukasaḥ forest dwellers, samētāḥ together, duṣprasahām enter, śūnyām vacant, purīm City, pramathya Devastate, sahasā united, pradharṣayēyuḥ storm.

"Coming to know that I am here with you, this side, considering it to be a weak point, the forest dwellers may enter the vacant city and Devastate all united."
visarjayitvāsacivāṅstatastāngatēṣurakṣassuyathāniyōgam .

vyacārayadvānarasāgaraughaṅmahājhaṣaḥpūrṇamivārṇavaugham ।।6.59.35।।


tān them, sacivān counsellors, visarjayitvā sent away, tataḥ there upon, rakṣaḥsu Rakshasa, yathāniyōgam as instructed, gatēṣu having departed, vānarasāgaraugham ocean of Vanaras, mahājhaṣaḥ gigantic fish, pūrṇam totally, arṇavaugham iva like the war in the ocean, vyadārayat pierced through.

After the counsellors departed from there Ravana pierced through the ocean of Vanaras just as gigantic fish would pierce in the sea.
tamāpatantaṅsahasāsamīkṣyadīptēṣucāpaṅyudhirākṣasēndram .

mahatsamutpāṭyamahīdharāgraṅdudrāvarakṣōdhipatiṅharīśaḥ ।।6.59.36।।


yudhi on the battlefield, sahasā speedily, āpatantam advancing suddenly, dīptēṣucāpam with radiant bow, rākṣasēndram Rakshasa king, samīkṣya watching, harīśaḥ monkey, mahat great, mahīdharāgram huge mountain top, samutpāṭya lifting up, rakṣōdhipatim towards Rakshasa king, dudrāva went.

Watching Ravana advancing suddenly on the battlefield with great speed, Sugriva took a huge mountain top and went towards Rakshasa king.
tacchailaśṛṅgaṅbahuvṛkṣasānuṅpragṛhyacikṣēpaniśācarāya .

tamāpatantaṅsahasāsamīkṣyacicchēdabāṇaistapanīyapuṅkhaiḥ ।।6.59.37।।


bahuvṛkṣasānum whose slopes were crowded with many trees, tat that, śailaśṛṅgam mountain top, pragṛhya seizing, niśācarāya at night rangers, cikṣēpa hurled, āpatantam towards, tam him, samīkṣya watching, sahasā quickly, tapanīyapuṅkhaiḥ arrows with gold shafts, bāṇaiḥ arrows, cicchēda broke.

Seizing mountain tops whose slopes were filled with trees Sugriva hurled at the night rangers. Watching this Ravana quickly broke them with his arrows fixed with golden shafts.
tasmin pravṛddhōttamasānuvṛkṣēśṛṅgēvikīrṇēpatitēpṛthivyām .

mahāhikalpaṅśaramantakābhaṅsamādadhērākṣasalōkanāthaḥ ।।6.59.38।।


tasmin in that, pravṛddhōttamasānuvṛkṣē slope covered with excellent trees, śṛṅgē peak, vidīrṇē broken, pṛthivyām on the ground, patitē fallen, rākṣasalōkanāthaḥ king of Rakshasa world, mahāhikalpam arranging for destruction, antakābham like the spirit of death, śaram arrow, samādadhē got ready.

After that slope covered with excellent trees had fallen on the ground and broken, Ravana got readied with an arrow as if for arranging destruction like the spirit of death.
sataṅgṛhītvā.nilatulyavēgaṅsavisphuliṅgajvalanaprakāśam .

bāṇaṅmahēndrāśanitulyavēgaṅcikṣēpasugrīvavadhāyaruṣṭaḥ ।।6.59.39।।


ruṣṭaḥ angry, saḥ he, anilatulyavēgam like the wind in speed, savisphuliṅgajvalanaprakāśam shone like sparks of fire, mahēndrāśanitulyavēgam vied with thunderbolt of Indra in speed, taṅbāṇam that arrow, gṛhītvā seizing, sugrīvavadhāya for the destruction of Sugriva, cikṣēpa released.

Seizing an arrow which shone like sparks of fire and had the speed of wind, nay vied with thunderbolt of Indra in speed, he (Ravana) released an arrow in anger.
sasāyakōrāvaṇabāhumuktaḥśakrāśaniprakhyavapuśśitāgraḥ .

sugrīvamāsādyabibhēdavēgādguhēritākrauñcamivōgraśaktiḥ ।।6.59.40।।


rāvaṇabāhumuktaḥ released from Ravana's arms, saḥsāyakaḥ that arrow, śakraśaniprakhyavapuḥ hard and sharp like Indra's thunderbolt, śitāgraḥ sharp thorn edged spear, sugrīvam Sugriva, āsādya reaching, guhēritā like Guha's, ugraśaktiḥ fierce, krauñcamiva Krauncha like, vēgāt violently, bibhēda pierced.

That arrow released from Ravana's arm, which was hard and sharp as the thunderbolt of Indra, pierced Sugriva just as the sharp thorn edged spear of Guha penetrated Krauncha mountain.
sasāyakārtōviparītacētāḥkūjanpṛthivyāṅnipapātavīraḥ .

taṅprēkṣyabhūmaupatitaṅvisaṅjñaṅnēduḥprahṛṣṭāyudhiyātudhānāḥ ।।6.59.41।।


saḥvīraḥ that hero, sāyakārtaḥ hurt by arrow, viparītacētāḥ lost sense, kūjan groaning, pṛthivyām on the ground, nipapāta fell, yudhi in battle, visaṅjñam sent forth, bhūmau on the ground, patitam fallen, tam they, prēkṣya seeing, yātudhānāḥ an evil spirit, prahṛṣṭāḥ joyfully, nēduḥ shouted.

That hero (Sugriva) hurt by the arrow lost senses and fell on the ground groaning in the battlefield. Seeing that the Rakshasas shouted joyfully overtaken by evil spirits.
tatōgavākṣōgavayassudaṅṣṭrastvatharṣabhōjyōtimukhōnalaśca .

śailān samutpāṭyavivṛddhakāyāḥpradudruvustaṅpratirākṣasēndram ।।6.59.42।।


tataḥ thereafter, gavākṣaḥ Gavaksha, gavayaḥ Gavaya, sudaṅṣṭra Sudamshtra, atha and, ṛṣabhaḥ Rshaba, jyōtimukhaḥ Jyothimukha, nalaśca Nala, śailān rock, samutpāṭya taking mountains, vivṛddhakāyāḥ raising their body size, tam they, rākṣasēndraṅprati over the king of Rakshasas, pradudruvuḥ rushed.

Thereafter Gavaksha, Gavaya, Sudamshtra, Rshaba, Jyothimukha and Nala increasing their body size rushed towards the king of Rakshasas.
tēṣāṅprahārān sacakāramōghān rakṣōdhipōbāṇaśataiḥśitāgraiḥ .

tānvānarēndrānapibāṇajālairbibhēdajāmbūnadacitrapuṅkhaiḥ ।।6.59.43।।


saḥrakṣōdhipaḥ the Rakshasa Lord, śitāgraiḥ mountain peaks, bāṇaśataiḥ hundreds of arrows, tēṣām by that, prahārān released, mōghān useless, cakāra resist, jāmbūnadacitrapuṅkhaiḥ arrows with golden shafts, bāṇajālaiḥ streams of arrows, tān them, vānarēndrānapi even Vanara king, bibhēda struck.

The Rakshasa Lord made the mountain peaks useless by the hundreds of arrows released by him. The streams of arrows with golden shafts could resist the Rakshasas and strike the Vanara king.
tēvānarēndrāstridaśāribāṇairbhinnānipēturbhuvibhīmakāyāḥ .

tatastutadvānarasainyamugraṅpracchādayāmāsasabāṇajālaiḥ ।।6.59.44।।


bhīmakāyāḥ fierce form, tēvānarēndrāḥ of that Vanara leaders, tridaśāribāṇaiḥ in the three directions, bhinnāḥ torn, bhuvi ground, nipētuḥ fell, tataḥ that, saḥ he, bāṇajālaiḥ streams of arrows, ugram sharp, tat vānarasainyam the army of Vanaras, pracchādayāmāsa covered.

The Vanara leaders of fierce form torn by the streams of sharp arrows discharged in the three directions fell covering the ground.
tēvadhyamānāḥpatitāḥpravīrānānadyamānābhayaśalyaviddhāḥ .

śākhāmṛgārāvaṇasāyakārtājagmuśśaraṇyaṅśaraṇaṅsmarāmam ।।6.59.45।।


vadhyamānāḥ those struck, patitāḥ fallen, nāvadyamānāḥ shrieking, bhayaśalyaviddhāḥ fear of pain by piercing, pravīrāḥ heroes, tēśākhāmṛgāḥ the monkeys, rāvaṇasāyakārtāḥ pressed by Ravana's arrows, śaraṇyam refuge rāmam Rama, śaraṇaṅjugmuḥ went to seek refuge.

Those monkeys struck and fallen by the piercing of arrows shrieking went to seek refuge from Rama.
tatōmahātmāsadhanurdhanuṣmānādāyarāmassahasājagāma .

taṅlakṣmaṇaḥprāñjalirabhyupētyauvācavākyaṅparamārthayuktam ।।6.59.46।।


tataḥ that, mahātmā great soul, dhanuṣmān holding bow, saḥrāmaḥ that Rama, dhanuḥ bow, ādāya taking, sahasā immediately, jagāma went, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, tam him, abhyupētya addressed, prāñjaliḥ with folded hand s, paramārthayuktam consonant with truth, vākyam words, uvāca spoken.

The great soul Rama who was holding a bow went seizing it. Lakshmana approached him immediately with folded hands and addressed Rama with words consonant with truth.
kāmamāryassuparyāptōvadhāyāsyadurātmanaḥ .

vidhamiṣyāmyahaṅcaitamanujānīhimāṅvibhō ।।6.59.47।।


durātmanaḥ evil minded, asya his, vadhāya destruction, āryaḥ noble, suparyāptaḥkāmam complete the task, vibhō glory, aham I, ētam thus, vidhamiṣyāmi will exterminate, mām me, anujānīhi I may be permitted.

"I will exterminate the evil minded Ravana. Oh! noble brother, may I be permitted to complete the task"
tamabravīnmahātējārāmassatyaparākramaḥ .

gacchayatnaparaścāpibhavalakṣmaṇa saṅyugē ।।6.59.48।।


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, satyaparākramaḥ truthful in enthusiasm to succeed, mahātējāḥ highly energetic, rāmaḥ Rama, tam to him, abravīt said, gaccha going, saṅyugē in the battle, yatnaparaścāpi be careful, bhava you.

Sri Rama, who was highly energetic and truthful in enthusiasm to succeed, told Lakshmana, "You go and be careful in the battle."
rāvaṇōhimahāvīryōraṇē.dbhutaparākramaḥ .

trailōkyēnāpisaṅkruddhōduṣprasahyōnasaṅśayaḥ ।।6.59.49।।


rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, mahāvīryaṅraṇē is a great hero in the battle, adbhutaparākramaḥ wonderful valour, saṅkruddhaḥ angry, trailōkyēnāpi in the three worlds, duṣprasahyaḥ difficult to resist, saṅśayaḥ doubt, na not.

"Ravana is a great hero in the battlefield. His valour in war is wonderful. He is angry but none can withstand him in the three worlds."
tasyacchidrāṇimārgasvasvacchidrāṇicalakṣya .

cakṣuṣādhanuṣāyatnā prakṣātmānaṅsamāhitaḥ ।।6.59.50।।


tasya his, chidrāṇi arrows, mārgasva in the direction of, svacchidrāṇi your arrows, lakṣya aim, samāhitaḥ being alert, cakṣuṣā your sight, dhanuṣā bow, yatnā making effort, ātmānam yourself.

"Remaining alert, apply your arrows in the direction of his arrows. Looking at his arrows carefully, making an effort to protect yourself, set your bow."
rāghavasyavacaśśrutvāsapariṣvajyābhipūjyaca .

abhivādyatat rāmaṅyayausaumitrirāhavam ।।6.59.51।।


saumitriḥ son of Sumitra, rāghavasya Raghava's, vacaḥ words, śrutvā hearing, sapariṣvajya embracing, abhipūjya offering prayers, taṅ that, rāmam Rama, abhivādyaca paying respects, ahavam for encounter, yayau sallied forth.

On hearing Raghava's words, son of Sumitra embraced him and offered prayers, paying respects sallied forth for the encounter.
sarāvaṇaṅvāraṇahastabāhuṅdadarśabhīmōdyatadīptacāpam .

pracchādayantaṅśaravṛṣṭijālaistānvānarābhaninnavikīrṇadēhān ।।6.59.52।।


saḥ he, vāraṇahastabāhum endowed with elephant trunk like round shoulders, bhīmōdyatadīptacāpam fierce bow glowing, bhinnavikīrṇadēhān broken bodies of Vanaras spread over, tān them, vānarān Vanaras, śaravṛṣṭijālaiḥ showering net of arrows, pracchādayantam instigating, rāvaṇam Ravana, dadarśa saw.

He saw Ravana, endowed with round shoulders like elephant trunks, with fierce bow glowing and the broken bodies of Vanaras spread all over. Ravana was showering nets of arrows and instigating vanaras.
tamālōkyamahātējāhanūmānmārutātmajaḥ .

nivāryaśarajālānipradudrāvasarāvaṇam ।।6.59.53।।


mahātējāḥ very brilliant, mārutātmajaḥ son of wind god, saḥ he, hanūmān Hanuman, tam him, ālōkya seeing, śarajālāni stream of arrows, nivārya obstructing, rāvaṇam Ravana, pradudrāva darted towards.

The son of the wind god, Hanuman, a brilliant one seeing Ravana, obstructed the stream of arrows and darted towards him.
rathaṅtasyasamāsādyabāhumudyamyadakṣiṇam .

trāsayanrāvaṇaṅdhīmānhanūmānvākyamabravīt ।।6.59.54।।


dhīmān courageous, hanumān Hanuman, tasya his, ratham chariot, samāsādya approaching near, dakṣiṇam right, bāhum arm, udyamya lifting, trāsayan menacing, vākyam these words, abravīt spoke.

Courageous Hanuman seeing the chariot of Ravana lifting his right arm menacing him spoke these words.
dēvadānavagandharvāyakṣāścasaharākṣaisaiḥ .

avaśyaṅtutvayābhagnāvānarēbhyastutēbhayam ।।6.59.55।।


dēvadāvanagandharvaiḥ gods, demons and Gandharvas, saharākṣasaiḥ along with Rakshasas, yakṣaiśca Yakshas also, avaśyaṅtu surely, tvayā by you, bhagnā death, tē to you, vānarēbhyastu from Vanaras also, bhayam fear.

"Your life is surely secure from gods, demons, Gandharvas and Yakshas and Rakshasas but you fear Vanaras."
ēṣamēdakṣiṇōbāhuḥpañcaśākhaḥsamudyataḥ .

vidhamiṣyatitēdēhādbhūtātmānaṅcirōṣitam ।।6.59.56।।


mē I, pañcaśākhaḥ five branches, ēṣaḥ that way, samudyataḥ together, dakṣiṇaḥbāhuḥ right arm, tē to you, dēhāt body, cirōṣitam for long, bhūtātmānam subtle body, vidhamiṣyati will expel.

"I raised this right arm that way with five branches (five fingers) at you that will expel your subtle self (made up of the five subtle elements) from your body."
śrutvāhanumatōvākyaṅrāvaṇōbhīmavikramaḥ .

saṅraktanayanaḥkrōdhādidaṅvacanamabravīt ।।6.59.57।।


bhīmavikramaḥ truly fierce, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, hanumataḥ Hanuman's, vākyam words, śrutvā hearing, krōdhāt in anger, saṅraktanayanaḥ with blood red eyes, idam thus, vacanam words, abravīt spoke.

Ravana of truly fierce valour, hearing Hanuman's words, his eyes became blood red and spoke to Hanuman this way.
kṣipraṅpraharaniḥśaṅkaṅsthirāṅkīrtimavāpnuhi .

tatastvāṅjñātavikrāntaṅnāśayiṣyāmivānara ।।6.59.58।।


vānara Vanara, niḥśaṅkam without any hesitation, kṣipram at once, prahara go about, sthirām permanent, kīrtim fame, avāpnuhi will attain, tataḥ thereafter, jñātavikrāntam knowing your prowess, tvām you, nāśayiṣyāmi shall destroy.

"O Vanara! Go about without any hesitation. Attain the fame of a Vanara hitting Ravana permanently. Thereafter knowing your prowess, I shall put an end to you."
rāvaṇasyavacaśśrutvāvāyusūnurvacō.bravīt .

prahṛtaṅhimayāpūrvamakṣaṅtavasutaṅtava ।।6.59.59।।


rāvaṇasya Ravana's, vacaḥ words, śrutvā hearing, vāyusūnuḥ son of wind god, vacaḥ words, abravīt spoke, mayā by me, pūrvam earlier, prahṛtam killed, tavasutam your son, akṣam Akshaya, tava your.

Having heard Ravana's words, Hanuman said, "Think of your son Akshaya killed by me earlier."
ēvamuktōmahātējārāvaṇōrākṣasēśvaraḥ .

ājaghānānilasutaṅtalēnōrasivīryavān ।।6.59.60।।


ēvam that manner, uktaḥ having spoken, mahātējāḥ highly energetic, vīryavān valiant, rākṣasēśvaraḥ Rakshasa Lord, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, anilasutam son of wind god, talēna with hand, urasi on the chest, ājaghāna slapped.

Having spoken that way by Hanuman, the Lord of Rakshasas slapped his hand on Hanuman's chest.
satalābhihatastēnacacālacamuhurmuhuḥ .

sthitvāmuhūrtaṅtējasvīsthairyaṅkṛtvāmahāmatiḥ ।।6.59.61।।

ājaghānābhisaṅkṛddhastalēnaivāmaradviṣam .


tēna by him, talābhihataḥ smacked by, saḥ he (Hanuman), muhurmuhuḥ again and again, cacālaca with hand, tējasvī brilliant, mahāmatiḥ intellectual, muhūrtam for a minute, sthitvā stood firm, sthairyam picking up courage, abhi very, kṛtvā did, saṅkṛddhaḥ enraged, talēnaiva with his palm, amaradviṣam enemy of gods, ājaghāna struck.

Smacked by him (Ravana), Hanuman, a brilliant and intelligent one stood firm for a while and picking up courage, highly enraged struck the enemy of gods with his palm.
tatastatēnābhihatōvānarēṇamahātmanā ।।6.59.62।।

daśagrīvaḥsamādhūtōyathābhūmicalē.calaḥ .


tataḥ thereupon, mahātmanā great soul, tēnavānarēṇa by the Vanara, abhihataḥ struck, daśagrīvaḥ ten headed, bhūmicalē shaken like an earthquake, acalaḥyathā like mountain, samādhūtaḥ shaken together, tatē afterwards.

Thereupon, struck by the great soul, Vanara, the ten headed Ravana was shaken like the earthquake on the mountain together.
saṅgrāmētaṅtathādṛṣṭavārāvaṇaṅtalatāḍitam ।।6.59.63।।

ṛṣayōvānarāḥsiddhānēdurdēvāssahāsuraiḥ .


saṅgrāmē in that war, tathā that way, talatāḍitam hit by hand, taṅrāvaṇam that Ravana, dṛṣṭavā hard, ṛṣayaḥ sages, vānarāḥ Vanara, siddhāḥ siddhas, asuraiḥsaha demons as well, dēvā Devas, nēduḥ shouted.

Ravana hit by hand in that way in a hard manner, the siddhas, demons as well and even Devatas raised their voice.
athā.śvāsyamahātējārāvaṇōvākyamabravīt ।।6.59.64।।

sādhuvānara vīryēṇaślāghanīyō.simēripuḥ .


atha and then, mahātējāḥ extremely energetic, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, āśvāsya from breath, vākyam words, abravīt spoke, vānara Vanara, sādhu well done, vīryēṇa courageous, ślāghanīya praise worthy, mēripuḥ my enemy, asi you are.

And thereafter, thus spoke extremely energetic Ravana recovering from breath, "Well done vanara. You are courageous and praiseworthy, my enemy!"
rāvaṇēnaivamuktastumārutirvākyamabravīt ।।6.59.65।।

dhigastumamavīryēṇayastvaṅjīvasirāvaṇa .


rāvaṇēna by Ravana, ēvam in that way, uktaḥ spoken, mārutiḥ Maruti, vākyam words, abravīt said, rāvaṇa Ravana, mama my, vīryēṇa valour, dhik astu What a shame, yat that, tvam your, jīvasi survived.

Ravana having spoken in that way, Maruti said "Oh Ravana! What a shame on my valour, you survived."
sakṛttupraharēdānīṅdurbhuddhē kiṅvikatthasē ।।6.59.66।।

tatastvāṅmāmikāmuṣṭirnayiṣyatiyamakṣayam .


durbhuddhē evil minded, kiṅvikatthasē why do you brag, idānīm like this, sakṛt once more you do, prahara strike, tataḥ then, māmikaḥ I will once again, muṣṭiḥ fist, tvām you, yamakṣayam to the abode of Yama, nayiṣyati I wish.

"O evil minded one, why do you brag You do this once more I will strike you once again with my fist and send you to the abode of Yama."
tōmārativākyēnakōdhastasyatadā.jvalat ।।6.59.67।।

saṅraktanayanōyatnānmuṣṭimudyamyadakṣiṇam .

pātayāmāsavēgēnavānarōrasivīryavān ।।6.59.68।।


tataḥ then, mārutivākyēna consequent to Maruti's words, tadā then, tasya his, kōdhaḥ anger, ajvalat burning, saṅraktanayanaḥ red eyes, yatnāt effort, dakṣiṇam right, muṣṭim fist, udyamya lifting, vīryavān powerful, vēgēna instantly, vānarōrapi Vanara's enemy, pātayāmāsa brought down.

Consequent to Maruti speaking like that, Ravana's eyes turned red, burning with anger. The powerful Ravana lifted his right fist instantly and brought it down on his powerful enemy.
hanūmān vakṣasivyūḍhēsañcacālahataḥpunaḥ .

vihvalaṅtutadādṛṣṭavāhanūmantaṅmahābalam ।।6.59.69।।

rathēnātirathaśaśīghraṅnīlaṅpratisamabhyagāt .


vyūḍhē hit, vakṣasi on chest, hanūmān Hanuman, hataḥpunaḥ again hurt, sañcacāla reeled, vihvalam overcome with fear, mahābalam very powerful, taṅhanūmantam that Hanuman, dṛṣṭavā seeing, atirathaḥ best charioteer, rathēna chariot, śīghram quickly, nīlaṅprati towards Neela, samabhyagāt drove.

Hit on his chest, Hanuman got hurt again and reeled. Seeing Hanuman's power, overcome with fear, the best charioteer Ravana drove quickly towards Neela.
rākṣasānāmadhipatirdhaśagrīvaḥpratāpavān ।।6.59.70।।

pannagapratimairbhīmaiḥparamarmābhibhēdibhiḥ .

śarairādīpayāmāsanīlaṅharicamūpatim ।।6.59.71।।


rākṣasānām for Rakshasas, adhipatiḥ Lord, pratāpavān indomitable, daśagrīvaḥ ten headed, pannagapratimaiḥ resembling serpents, bhīmaiḥ dreadful, paramarmābhibhēdanaiḥ which can pierce through vital parts, śaraiḥ arrows, haricamūpatim leader of monkeys, nīlam Nila, ādīpayāmāsa began to strike.

The ten headed indomitable Lord of Rakshasas with his arrows that resembled serpents, dreadful, capable of piercing into vital parts began to strike at Neela, the leader of monkeys.
saśaraughasamāyastōnīlaḥkapicamūpatiḥ .

karēṇēkainēśailāgraṅrakṣōdhipatayē.sṛjat ।।6.59.72।।


śaraughasamāyastaḥ pressurized by streams of arrows, kapicamūpatiḥ monkey leader, saḥnīlaḥ that Nila, ēkēna alone, karēṇa tearing up, śailāgram mountain peak, rakṣōdhipatayē on the Rakshasa Lord, asṛjat hurled.

Pressured by the streams of arrows, the monkey leader, Neela single handed took up a peak of a mountain and hurled at the Lord of Rakshasas.
hanūmānapitējasvīsamāśvastōmahāmanāḥ .

viprēkṣamāṇōyuddhēpsussarōṣamidamabravīt ।।6.59.73।।

nīlēnasahasaṅyuktaṅrāvaṇaṅrākṣasēśvaram .

anyēnayudyamānasyanayuktamabhidhāvanam ।।6.59.74।।

Endowed with a great mind and energetic Hanuman became alert and seeking to fight with Ravana, feeling fresh, enraged, looking at Nila said "It is not correct to attack one who is fighting with another."
rāvaṇō.pimahātējāstaṅcchṛṅgaṅsaptabhiḥśaraiḥ .

It may be possible to lift Himalayas, Mandara, Meru mountains or even the Devatas of the three worlds but not possible to lift Lakshmana by shoulders.
śaktyābrāhmyāhisaumitristāḍitāstustanāntarē .

viṣṇōracinyantyaṅsvaṅbhāgamātmānaṅpratyanusmarat ।।6.59.112।।


saumitriḥ Saumithri, brāhmyā shoulders, śaktyā by the javelin, stanāntarē in the chest, tāḍitāstu wounded, viṣṇōḥ Vishnu, acintyam inconceivable, svam him, ātmānam own self, anusmarat recalled.

Even though Saumithri was wounded in the chest and the power of Brahma entered (into his chest) he recalled himself as an inconceivable form of Vishnu.
tatōdānavadarpaghnaṅsaumitriṅdēvakaṇṭakaḥ .

taṅpīḍayitvābāhubhyāṅnaprabhurlaṅghanē.bhavat ।।6.59.113।।


tataḥ thereafter, dēvakaṇṭakaḥ enemy of Devatas, tam him, dānavadarpaghnam pride of Rakshasas, saumitrim Saumithri, bāhubhyām shoulders, pīḍayitvā capable of crushing, laṅghanē to lift, prabhuḥ king, nābhavat not do.

Thereafter, Ravana the enemy of Devatas was not capable of lifting Lakshmana's shoulders. Lakshmana could crush the pride of Rakshasas.
athavāyusutaḥkruddhōrāvaṇaṅsamabhidravat .

ājaghānōrasikruddhōvajrakalpēnamuṣṭinā ।।6.59.114।।


atha and then, kruddhaḥ angry, vāyusutaḥ son of wind god, rāvaṇam Ravana, samabhidravat came towards, kruddhaḥ angry, vajrakalpēna by thunderbolt, muṣṭinā fist, urasi on the chest, ājaghāna struck.

Then the son of the wind god, enraged, came towards Ravana. Full of anger, he struck him with his thunderbolt like fist on the chest of Ravana.
tēnamuṣṭiprahārēṇarāvaṇōrākṣasēśvaraḥ .

jānubhyāmapatadbhūmaucacālacapapātaca ।।6.59.115।।


tēna by that, muṣṭiprahārēṇa blow of the fist, rākṣasēśvaraḥ Rakshasa Lord, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, cacāla shaken, jānubhyām on his knees, bhūmau on the ground, apatat ca fell.

By the blow of Hanuman's fist, Ravana the Lord of Rakshasas was shaken and fell on the ground on his knees.
asyaiścanētraiśśravaṇaiḥpapātarudhiraṅbahu .

vighūrṇamānōniścēṣṭōrathōpasthaupāviśat ।।6.59.116।।


āsyaiḥca from the mouth, nētraiḥ eyes, śravaṇaiḥ ears, bahu much, rudhiram blood, papāta flowed, vighūrṇamānaḥ rolling, niścēṣṭaḥ still, rathōpasthē hind part, upāviśat sank.

Much blood flowed from his(Ravana's) mouth, ears, and eyes. Rolling in the hind part of the chariot he became still and sank.
visaṅjñōmūrcchritaścāsīnnacasthānaṅsamālabhat .

visaṅjñaṅrāvaṇaṅdṛṣṭavāsamarēbhīmavikramam ।।6.59.117।।

ṛṣayōvānarāścaivanēdurdēvāssavāsavāḥ .


visaṅjñaḥ lost senses, mūrchitaśca unconscious, āsīnna perturbed, sthānam location, nacasamālabhat not knowing, samarē in the combat, bhīmavikramam fierce valour, rāvaṇam Ravana, dṛṣṭavā seeing, ṛṣayaḥ sages, vānarāścaiva Vanaras also, savāsavāḥsaha demons also, dēvāścaiva even Devatas, nēduḥ shouted in joy.

Ravana of fierce valour having lost senses and waking up from unconscious state, perturbed, did not know where he was. Seeing this the sages, even Vanaras, the demons as well as Devatas shouted in joy.
hanūmānapitējasvīlakṣmaṇaṅrāvaṇārdhitam ।।6.59.118।।

ānayadrāghavābhyāśaṅbāhubhyāṅparigṛhyatam .


atha and, tējasvī brilliant, hanūmānapi Hanuman, rāvaṇārdhitam wounded by Ravana, taṅlakṣmaṇam that Lakshmana, bāhubhyām both shoulders, parigṛhya holding, rāghūbhyāśam near Rama, ānayat brought.

Brilliant Hanuman holding Lakshmana wounded by Ravana in both shoulders brought him to Rama.
vāyusūnōḥsuhṛttvēnabhaktyāparamayācasaḥ ।।6.59.119।।

śatrūṇāmaprakampyō.pilaghutvamagamatkapēḥ .


saḥ he, śatrūṇām for the enemies, aprakampaḥapi unshakeable by enemies, vāyusūnōḥ son of wind god, suhṛttvēna friend, paramayā highly, bhaktyāca being devoted, kapēḥ monkey, laghutvam became light, āgamat became.

Lakshmana though unshakeable for enemies, became light for the son of wind god by his friendship and high devotion.
taṅsamutsṛjyasāśaktiḥsaumitriṅyudhidurjayam ।।6.59.120।।

rāvaṇasyarathētasmin sthānaṅpunarupāgatā .


sāśaktiḥ that power, yudhi in war, durjayam vanquish, saumitrim Saumithri, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, tasmin rathē in his chariot, punaḥ again, sthānam position, upāgatā returning back.

That power returned back to Ravana's chariot to its position, leaving Lakshmana, who was difficult to vanquish.
āśvastaścaniśalyaścalakṣmaṇaśśatrusūdanaḥ ।।6.59.121।।

viṣṇōrbhāgamamīmāṅsyamātmānaṅpratyanusmaran .


śatrusūdanaḥ could destroy foes, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, amīmāṅsyam immeasurable, viṣṇōḥbhāgam part of Vishnu, ātmānam himself, pratyanusmaran again remembering, āśvastaḥca from consciousness, viśalyaḥca relieved of wounds.

Lakshmana who could destroy foes, recovering from unconsciousness, relieved of wounds again remembered himself to be part of Vishnu of immeasurable power.
rāvaṇō.pimahātējāḥprāpyasaṅjñāṅmahāhavē ।।6.59.122।।

ādadēniśitān bāṇān jagrāhacamahaddhamaḥ .


mahātējāḥ of mighty prowess, rāvaṇō.pi Ravana too, mahāhavē huge combat saṅjñām waking up, prāpya endured, niśitān sharp, bāṇān arrows, ādadē, mahat great, dhanuḥca bow also, ādadē took over.

Ravana of mighty prowess waking up from consciousness took over his sharp arrows and the great bow also.
nipātitamahāvīrāṅdravantīṅvānarīṅcamūm ।।6.59.123।।

rāghavasturaṇēdṛṣṭavārāvaṇaṅsamabhidravat .


rāghavastu Raghava also, raṇē in the combat, nipātitamahāvīrām fallen heroes, dravantīm struck down, vānarīm Vanaras, camūm leaders, dṛṣṭavā seeing, rāvaṇam Ravana, samabhidravat assailed.

Raghava also assailed Ravana seeing the fallen Vanara heroes struck in the combat.
athaivamupasaṅgamyahanūmānvākyamabravīt ।।6.59.124।।

mamapṛṣṭhaṅsamāruhyarākṣasaṅśāstumarhasi .

viṣṇuryathāgarutmantaṅbalavantaṅsamāhitaḥ ।।6.59.125।।


atha and then, hanūmān Hanuman, ēnam , upasaṅgamya submitted, vākyam these words, abravīt spoke, viṣṇuḥ Vishnu, garutmantam Garuda, balavaṅntaṅ mighty, samāhitaḥ mounted, yathā so also, mama my, pṛṣṭham back, samāruhya mounting, rākṣasam Rakshasa, śāstum subdue, arhasi ought to.

And then Hanuman submitted to Rama, "Just as Lord Vishnu mounted on mighty Garuda, you should also be mounted on my back and subdue Ravana."
tacchrutvārāghavōvākyaṅvāyuputrēṇabhāṣitam .

ārurōhamahāśūraṅbalavantaṅmahākapim ।।6.59.126।।

rathasthaṅrāvaṇaṅsaṅ khyēdadarśamanujādhipaḥ .


rāghavaḥ Raghava, vāyuputrēṇa to the son of wind god, bhāṣitam spoken, tat those, vākyam words, śrutvā hearing, ārurōhamahāśūraṅ climbed on the hero, mahākapim great monkey, balavantam strong, ārurōha on climbing, manujādhipaḥ Lord of humans, saṅ khyē in war, rathastham on the chariot, rāvaṇam Ravana, dadarśa saw.

On hearing the sub mission of Hanuman, Sri Rama, the Lord of humans climbed on the great monkey and saw Ravana on the chariot.
tamālōkyamahātējāḥpradudrāvasarāghavaḥ ।।6.59.127।।

vairōcanivakruddhōviṣṇurabhyudyatāyudhaḥ .


mahātējāḥ highly energetic, saḥ he, tam him, ālōkya beheld, kruddhaḥ furious, abhyudyatāyudhaḥ rushed towards, viṣṇuḥ Vishnu, vairōcaniva like Virochana, rāghavaḥ Raghava, pradudrāva wielding bow.

Beholding Ravana, highly energetic Rama wielding his bow went furiously towards him just as Lord Vishnu went with his discuss against Virochana.
jyāśabdamakarōttīvraṅvajraniṣpēṣanisvanam ।।6.59.128।।

girāgambhīrayārāmōrākṣasēndramuvācaha .


rāmaḥ Rama, vajraniṣpēṣanisvanam like the clap of thunder sound, tīvram intense, jyāśabdam echoing the sound, akarōt caused, gambhīrayā majestic, girā in deep voice, rākṣasēndram Rakshasa king, uvācaha spoke.

Rama created a sound like a clap of thunder ringing intensely, a majestic one and spoke in a deep voice to the king.
tiṣṭhatiṣṭhamamatvaṅhikṛtvāvipriyamīdṛśam ।।6.59.129।।

kvanurākṣasaśārdūla gatōmōkṣamavāpsyasi .


rākṣasaśārdūla tiger among Rakshasas, tiṣṭhatiṣṭha forbear, tvam you, mama to me, īdṛśam such, vipriyam delivered, kṛtvā having done, kvanu where, gatvā going, mōkṣam deliverance, avāpsyasi after the offence.

"Oh! Tiger among Rakshasas, forbear, forbear. Having done such an offence to me, where are you going for deliverance"
yadīndravaivasvatabhāskarānvāsvayambhuvaiśvānaraśaṅkarānvā .

gamiṣyasitvaṅdaśavādiśōvātathāpimēnādyagatōvimōkṣyasē ।।6.59.130।।


indravaivasvatabhāskarānvā either to Indra, or Yama or sun god, svayambhuvaiśvānaraśaṅkarānvā to selfborn Brahma or to fire god or Shankara, daśavā ten, diśōvā directions, tvam you, gamiṣyasiyadi even if you run, tathāpi like that, adya front, mē of me, gataḥ gone, navimōkṣyasē not escape.

"If you go to Indra or Yama or Sun God or the selfborn Brahma or fire God or Shankara or the ten directions like that, and if you run in front of me you cannot escape."
yaścaivaśaktyābhihatastvayā.dyaicchanviṣādaṅsahasābhyupētya .

saēṣarakṣōgaṇarājamṛtyuḥsaputrapautrasyatavādyayuddhē ।।6.59.131।।


rakṣōgaṇarāja king of Rakshasa troop, adya in front, yaḥēṣaḥ he who like that, tvayā by you, śaktyā support, abhihataḥ struck now, viṣādam sorrow, icchan , saḥēva he himself, sahasā now, abhyupētya come, adya in front, yuddhē to combat, saputrapautrasya sons and grandsons, tava your, mṛtyuḥ death.

"Oh! king of Rakshasa troop! He, who was struck without support now, even if he were to come now in front, you with your sons and grandsons will be struck to death by him."
ētēnacātyadbhutadarśanāniśarairjavasthānakṛtālayāni .

caturdhaśānyāttavarāyudhānirakṣaḥsahasrāṇiniṣūditāni ।।6.59.132।।


ētēna by me, adbhutadarśanāni of fierce form, janasthānakṛtālayāni taken abode at Janasthana, attavarāyudhāni used choicest weapons, caturdhaśāni fourteen, rakṣaḥsahasrāṇi thousands of Rakshasas, śaraiḥ weapons, niṣūditāni were destroyed by me.

"By me, who is your adversary, fourteen thousand Rakshasas of fierce forms, who had taken abode at Janasthana and used choicest weapons were exterminated."
rāghavasyavacaśśrutvārākṣasēndrōmahābalaḥ .

vāyuputraṅmahāvēgaṅvahantaṅrāghavaṅraṇē ।।6.59.133।।

rōṣēṇamahatāviṣṭaḥpūrvavairamanusmaran .

ājaghānaśarairdīpssaiḥkālānalaśikhōpamaiḥ ।।6.59.134।।


mahābalaḥ mighty strong, rākṣasēndraḥ Lord of Rakshasas, rāghavasya Raghava's, vacaḥ words, śrutvā on hearing, mahatā violent, rōṣēṇa anger, āviṣṭaḥ seized with, pūrvavairam earlier enmity, anusmaran recalling, raṇē in combat, rāghavam Raghava, vahantam struck, mahāvēgam at high speed, vāyuputram son of wind god, kālānalaśikhōpamaiḥ like tongues of fire at universal destruction, dīpssaiḥ blazing, śaraiḥ darts, ājaghāna discharged.

On hearing Raghava's words, the mighty strong king of Rakshasas seized with violent anger, recalling earlier enmity, struck with blazing arrows like tongues of fire at the time of universal destruction while Hanuman bore Rama.
rākṣasēnāhavētasyatāḍitasyāpisāyakaiḥ .

svabhāvatējōyuktasyabhūyastējō.bhyavardhata ।।6.59.135।।


rākṣasēna by the Rakshasa, āhavē discharged, sāyakaiḥ arrows, tāḍitasyāpi when hurt him also, svabhāvatējōyuktasya by nature endowed with energy, tasya his, tējaḥ energy, bhūyaḥ exceedingly, abhyavardhata went on increasing.

Even though Hanuman was hurt by the arrows discharged by the Rakshasa king, being endowed with energy by nature, his energy went on increasing.
tatōrāmōmahātējārāvaṇēnakṛtavraṇam .

dṛṣṭavāplavagaśārdūlaṅkrōdhasyavaśamēyivān ।।6.59.136।।


tataḥ then, mahātējāḥ of extraordinary energy, rāmaḥ Rama, rāvaṇēna Ravana, kṛtavraṇam wounds caused, plavagaśārdūlam tiger among monkeys, dṛṣṭavā seeing, krōdhasya in anger, vaśam seized, ēyivān possibly.

Seeing the wounds caused by Ravana to Hanuman, the tiger among monkeys, possibly Rama was seized with anger.
tasyābhisaṅkramyarathaṅsacakraṅsāśvadhvajacchatramahāpatākam .

sasārathiṅsāśaniśūlakhaḍagaṅrāmaḥpracicchēdaśaraissupuṅkhaiḥ ।।6.59.137।।


rāmaḥ Rama, abhisaṅkramya advancing forward, tasya his, sacakram the wheel of chariot, sāśvadhvajacchatramahāpatākam horses, standard, canopy, sasārathim the charioteer, sāśaniśūlakhaḍagam tridents and weapons, ratham chariot, śaraiḥ darts, puṅkhaiḥ swords, pracicchēda tore into pieces.

Advancing towards him, (Ravana), Rama tore into pieces his chariot, wheels, horses, standard and canopy including the charioteer and the darts and swords.
athēndraśatruṅtarasājaghānabāṇēnavajrāśanisannibhēna .

bhujāntarēvyūḍhasujātarūpēvajrēṇamēruṅbhagavānivēndraḥ ।।6.59.138।।


atha and, vajrāśanisannibhēna resembling thunderbolt in shining, bāṇēna arrows, indraśatrum weapon of Indra, tarasā sharp, vyūḍhasujātarūpē broad fine looking chest,bhujāntarē in between the shoulders, bhagavān divine, indraḥ Indra, vajrēṇa with thunderbolt, mērum iva like the Meru mountain, jaghāna struck.

Then with a shining thunderbolt like arrows Rama struck with the weapon of Indra into the fine chest in between the shoulders just as Indra would strike the Meru Mountain with his thunderbolt.
yōvajrapātaśanisannipātānnacakṣubhēnāpicacālarājā .

sarāmabāṇābhihatōbhṛśārtaścacālacāpaṅcamumōcavīraḥ ।।6.59.139।।


yaḥ he, rājā king, vajrapātāśanisannipātāt one who is not disturbed hit by thunderbolt or by lightning, nacukṣubhē not disturbed, nāpicacāla arrow, saḥ he, vīraḥ hero, rāmabāṇābhihataḥ struck by Rama's arrow, bhṛśārtaḥ reeled, cacāla agonized, cāpaṅca bow also, mumōca let go.

He, that heroic king, who was not disturbed hurt by thunderbolt of lightning, was agonized when struck by Rama's arrow and let his bow fall.
taṅvihvalantaṅprasamīkṣyarāmassamādadēdīptamathārthacandram .

tēnārkavarṇaṅsahasākirīṭaṅcicchēdarakṣōdhipatērmahātmā ।।6.59.140।।


rāmaḥ Rama, vihvalantam swooning, tam him, prasamīkṣya seeing, atha then, dīptam flaming, arthacandram crescent shaped, samādadē took up, tēna by that, mahātmā great soul, sahasā hastily, arkavarṇam red like sun, kirīṭam crown, cicchēda broke into pieces.

Seeing Ravana swooning, great soul Rama took up a crescent shaped arrow and hastily broke his crown into pieces which were shining bright red like the Sun.
taṅnirviṣāśīviṣasannikāśaṅśāntārciṣaṅsūryamivāprakāśam .

gataśriyaṅkṛttakirīṭakūṭamuvācarāmōyudhirākṣasēndram ।।6.59.141।।


rāmaḥ Rama, yudhi in combat, nirviṣāśīviṣasannikāśam resembling a serpent rid of poison without his crown, śāntārciṣam without splendour, sūryamiva like sun, aprakāśam without brightness, gataśriyam glory lost, kṛttakirīṭakūṭam crown being torn, taṅrākṣasēndram that king of Rakshasas, uvāca said.

Rama said to the king of Rakshasas, who was like a serpent rid of poison without (head) crown, without splendour like the Sun without brightness, his glory lost with the crown broken in the combat.
kṛtaṅtvayākarmamahatsubhīmaṅhatapravīraścakṛtastvayā.ham .

tasmātpariśrāntaitivyavasyannatvāṅśarairmṛtyuvaśaṅnayāmi ।।6.59.142।।


tvayā by you, subhīmam exceedingly difficult, mahat great, karma task, kṛtam done, tvayā by you, aham I, hatapravīraḥ mighty heroes killed, kṛtaḥca done, tasmāt therefore, pariśāntaḥiti exhausted, vyavasya declare, tvām you, mṛtyuvaśam to death, nanayāmi not sent.

A great task of killing mighty heroes has been accomplished by you. Therefore, you are exhausted. I declare that I will not send you to death.
gacchānujānāmiraṇārdhitastvaṅpraviśyarātriṅcararājalaṅkām .

āśvasyaniryāhirathīcadhanvītadābalaṅprēkṣyasimērathasthaḥ ।।6.59.143।।


rātriṅcararāja king of night rangers, jānāmi I know, tvam you, raṇārdhitaḥ are agonized after war, gaccha go, laṅkām to Lanka, praviśya reenter, aśvasya resting, rathī chariot, dhanvīca and bow, niryāhi depart, tadā then, rathasthaḥ mounted on chariot, mē my, balam strength, prēkṣyasi witness.

"King of night rangers! I know you are agonized after the war. Go to Lanka and rest and reenter, mounted on your chariot with bow. You will witness my strength."
saēvamuktōhatadarpaharṣōnikṛttacāpaścahatāśvasūtaḥ .

śarārditaḥkṛttamahākirīṭōvivēśalaṅkāṅsahasāsmarājā ।।6.59.144।।


ēvam in that way, uktaḥ having spoken, saḥ by him, hatadarpaharṣaḥ vanity and joy crushed, nikṛttacāpaḥ bow broken into pieces, hatāśvasūtaḥ horses and charioteer killed, śarārdhitaḥ wounded by arrows, kṛttamahākirīṭaḥ crown broken, saḥrājā that king, sahasā hastily, laṅkām Lanka, vivēśa entered.

Rama having spoken in that way (consoling), the king with his vanity and pride crushed, bow broken into pieces, horses and charioteer killed, wounded by arrows, crown broken entered Lanka hastily.
praviṣṭērajanīcarēndrēmahābalēdāvavadēvaśatrau .

harīn viśalyān sahalakṣmaṇēnacakārarāmaḥparamāhavāgrē ।।6.59.145।।


mahābalē endowed with great prowess, dānavadēvaśatrau enemy of Danavas and Devas, tasmin his, rajanīcarēndrē king night prowlers, praviṣṭē entering, rāmaḥ Rama, paramāhavāgrē in the forefront, lakṣmaṇēnasaha with Lakshmana, harīn monkeys ', viśalyān removed, cakāra went.

After the king of prowlers, the enemy of Danavas and Devas entered Lanka, Rama and Lakshmana also drew out the arrows from monkeys in the forefront of the battlefield and went.
tasminprabhannētridaśēndraśatausurāsurābhūtagaṇādiśaśca .

sasāgarāssarṣimahōragāścatathaivabhūmyambucarāścaprahṛṣṭāḥ ।।6.59.146।।


tridaśēndraśatrau enemy of Indra, tasmin his, prabhannē having been routed, surāsurāḥ suras and Asuras, bhūtagaṇāḥ guardians, diśaśca of four quarters, hasāgarāḥ including sea, sarṣimahōragāḥca including the sages and serpents, tathaiva so also, bhūmyambucarāḥ creatures of land and water, prahṛṣṭāḥ joyful.

The enemy of Indra having been routed, the suras and asuras, the guardians of the four quarters, including the sea, the large serpents, and sages so also the creatures of land and water were joyful.
।।ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēēkōnaṣaṣṭitamassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the fifty ninth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
