Sloka & Translation

[Defeated by Rama, Ravana asks the Rakshasas to awaken Kumbhakarna. With great effort of Rakshasas, Kumbhakarna gets up from slumber.]

सप्रविश्यपुरींलङ्कांरामबाणभयार्धितः ।

भग्नदर्पस्तदाराजाबभूवव्यथितेन्द्रियः ।।6.60.1।।


तदा then, सः he, राजा king, लङ्कांपुरीम् Lanka, प्रविश्य entered, रामबाणभयार्धितः fearing the arrow of Rama, भग्नदर्पः vanity crushed, व्यथितेन्द्रियः lost control over senses, बभूव felt.

Then the king of Lanka after entering the city of Lanka, felt humiliated by Rama's arrow, vanity crushed and had lost control over his senses.
मातङ्गइवसिंहेनगरुडेनेवपन्नगः ।

अभिभूतोऽभवद्राजाराघवेणमहात्मना ।।6.60.2।।


राजा king, सिंहेन lion, मातङ्गःइव like an elephant, गरुडेन by Garuda, पन्नगइव like a serpent, महात्मना high souled, राघवेण at Rama, अभिभूतः humiliated, अभवत् remained.

Overcome by humiliation from the high souled Rama, Ravana remained like an elephant rejected by a lion and a serpent rejected by Garuda.
ब्रह्मदण्डप्रतीकानांविद्युत्सदृशवर्चसाम् ।

स्मरन्राघवबाणानांविव्यथेराक्षसेश्वरः ।।6.60.3।।


राक्षसेश्वरः Lord of Rakshasas, ब्रह्मदण्डप्रतीकानाम् resembling Brahmadanda (A comet seen at the time of dissolution), विद्युत्सदृशवर्चसाम् emitted an unsteady light like lightning, राघवमाणानम् Rama on his part, स्मरन् recalling, विव्यथे disquieted.

The Lord of Rakshasas remained disquieted recalling the arrows of Rama which emitted light like lightning, resembling Brahmadanda.
नकाञ्चनमयंदिव्यमाश्रित्यपरमासनम् ।

विप्रेक्षमाणोरक्षांसिरावणोवाक्यमब्रवीत् ।।6.60.4।।


सःरावणः Ravana, काञ्चनमयम् golden, दिव्यम् wonderful, परमासनम् magnificent, आश्रित्य seated, रक्षांसि at Rakshasas, विप्रेक्षमाणः gazing at, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Ravana seated on the wonderful golden magnificent throne gazing at Rakshasas spoke these words.
सर्वंतत्खलुमेमोघंयत्तप्तंपरमंतपः ।

यत्समानोमहेन्द्रेणमानुषेणास्मिर्जितः ।।6.60.5।।


रमम् Rama, यत् that which, तपः penance, तप्तम् asceticism, मे my, तत् सर्वम् all that, मोघंखलु purposeless, यत् that which, महेन्द्रेण by Mahendra, समानः equal to, मानुषेण human, िर्जितः defeated.

" All the penance which I have done, and the asceticism practised by me equal to Mahendra has become purposeless and defeated."
इदंतद्ब्रह्मणोघोरंवाक्यंमामभ्युपस्थितम् ।

मानुषेभ्योविजानीहिभयंत्वमितितत्तथा ।।6.60.6।।


त्वम् you, मानुषेभ्यः from humans, भयम् fear, विजानीहि coming to be true, इति thus, ब्रह्मणः Brahma, इदम् these, घोरम् dreadful, वाक्यम् words, माम् to me, उपस्थितम् warning given, तत् that, तथा like that.

The dreadful words of Brahma spoken to me" know that danger from humans is coming to be true.
देवदानवगन्धर्वैर्यक्षराक्षसपन्नगैः ।

अवध्यत्वंमयाप्राप्तंमानुषेभ्योनयाचितम् ।।6.60.7।।


देवदानवगन्धर्वैः Devas, Danavas and Gandharvas, यक्षराक्षसपन्नगैः Yakshas, Rakshasas and serpents, अवध्यत्वम् not to be killed, मया by me, प्राप्तम् sought, मानुषेभ्यः from humans, नयाचितम् not asked for.

"I sought protection from Devas, Danavas, Gandharvas, Rakshasas and serpents but not asked for protection from humans."
विदितंमानुषंमन्येरामंदशरथात्मजम् ।

इक्ष्वाकुकुलजातेनअनरण्येनयत्पुरा ।।6.60.8।।

उत्पत्स्यतेहिमद्वंशेपुरुषोराक्षसाधनु ।

यस्त्वांसपुत्रंसामात्यंसबलंसाश्वसारथिम् ।।6.60.9।।

निहनिष्यतिसङ्ग्रामेत्वांकुलाधम दुर्मते ।


राक्षसाधम lowest Rakshasa, कुलाधम vilest of the clan, दुर्मते evil minded, यः he who, सपुत्रम् your sons, सामात्यम् altogether, सबलम् all army, साश्वसारथिम् your horses and charioteers, त्वाम् you, सङ्ग्रामे in war, निहनिष्यति will perish, पुरुषः man, मद्वंशे in my race, उत्पत्स्यतेहि will be born, पुरा in the past, इक्ष्वाकुकलजातेन in the race of Ikshvaku, अनरण्येनयत् like that by Anaranya, विदितम् made known, दशरथात्मजम् Dasaratha's son, रामम् Rama, मानुषम् human, मन्ये I think.

"I think that Dasaratha's son Rama, a human being is about whom king Anaranya born in Ikshvaku race, who cursed me earlier saying, 'In my race will be born a man who will kill you in war, with your sons, your horses, charioteers, all army, O evil minded lowest of Rakshasas, and the vilest of Rakshasas."
शप्तोऽहंवेदवत्याचयदासाधर्षितापुरा ।।6.60.10।।

सेयंसीतामहाभागाजाताजनकनन्दिनी ।


यदा that way, पुरा in the past, सा she, धर्षिता violated, वेदवत्या by Vedavathi, अहम् I am, शप्तः cursed, सा she, इयम् thus, महाभागा highly blessed, जनकनन्दिनी loved by Janaka, सीता Sita, जाता born.

"In the past, I violated Vedavathi and got cursed by her. The same Woman born as Sita, the daughter of Janaka, is a highly blessed one."
उमानन्दीश्वरश्चापिरम्भावरुणकन्यका ।।6.60.11।।

यथोक्तास्तन्मयाप्राप्तंनमिथ्याऋषिभाषितम्

उमा Uma, नन्दीश्वरश्चापि Nandeeswara (monkey faced attendant of Siva) also, रम्भ Rambha, वरुणकन्यका daughter of Varuna, यथा like that, उक्ताः spoken, तत् that, मया by me, प्राप्तम् attained, ऋषिभाषितम् spoken by those endowed with vision, मिथ्या untrue, न not.

"Uma, Nandeeswara, Rambha and daughter of Varuna have cursed me like that and the prediction of those endowed with vision has been attained by me."
एतदेवाभ्युपागम्ययत्नंकर्तुमहार्हथ ।।6.60.12।।

राक्षसाश्चापितिष्ठन्तुचर्यागोपुरमूर्थसु ।


एतत् एव all this, अभ्युपागम्य knowing, इह here, यत्नम् make effort, कर्तुम् will do, अर्हथ ought to, राक्षसाश्चापि even Rakshasas, चर्यागोपुरमूर्धसु strive to succeed positioned at the top of gates, तिष्ठन्तु positioned.

"Knowing all this, make effort doing what ought to be done and let the Rakshasas strive to succeed positioned on top of the gates."
सचाप्रतिमगाम्भीर्योदेवदानवदर्पहा ।।6.60.13।।

ब्रह्मशापाभिभूतस्तुकुम्भकर्णोविबोध्यताम् ।


अप्रतिमगाम्भीर्यः unparalleled in profundity, देवदानवदर्पहाः capable of crushing the vanity of Devas and Danavas, ब्रह्मशापाभिभूतः cursed by Brahma, सः he, कुम्भकर्णः Kumbhakarna, विबोध्यताम् be aroused.

"Let Kumbhakarna of unparalleled profundity, capable of crushing Devas and Danavas, who is in slumber owing to the curse of Brahma be awakened."
सपराजितमात्मानंप्रहस्तंचनिषूदितम् ।।6.60.14।।

ज्ञात्वारक्षोबलंभीममादिदेशमहाबलः ।


महाबलः endowed with mighty prowess, सः he, पराजितम् defeated, आत्मानम् himself, प्रहस्तम् Prahastha, निषूदितम् killed, भीमम् terrific, बलम् strength, आदिदेश be instructed.

"Let him be instructed that Prahastha endowed with mighty prowess has been defeated and killed."
द्वारेषुयत्नःक्रियतांप्राकारश्चाधिरुह्यताम् ।।6.60.15।।

निद्रावशसमाविष्टःकुम्भकर्णोविबोद्यताम् ।


द्वारेषु gates, यत्नः attempt, क्रियताम् carryout, प्राकारश्च defensive walls, अधिरुह्यताम् climbing up, निद्राववसमाविष्टः fully awakened from sleep, कुम्भकर्णः Kumbhakarna, विबोध्यताम् aroused.

"Let the Rakshasas climb up the defensive walls and attempt to guard. Also let Kumbhakarna be aroused from sleep."
सुखंस्वपितिनिश्चिन्तःकालोपहतचेतनः ।।6.60.16।।

नवषट् सप्तचाष्टौचमासान् स्वपितिराक्षसः ।


राक्षसः Rakshasa, कालोपहतचेतनः lost consciousness for long, निश्चिन्तः slumbering at ease, नव nine, सप्त seven, षट् six, अष्टौ eight च and, मासान् months, सुखम् happily, स्वपिति sleeping.

"The Rakshasa, Kumbhakarna, lost consciousness is slumbering at ease and has been sleeping for six to nine months happily."
मन्त्रयित्वाप्रसुप्तोऽयमितस्तुनवमेऽहनि ।।6.60.17।।

तंतुबोधयतक्षिप्रंकुम्भकर्णंमहाबलम् ।


मन्त्रयित्वा deliberating like this, अयम् I am, इतः here, नवमे nine, अहनि day and night, प्रसुप्तः sleeping, महाबलम् great strength, तंकुम्बकुर्णम् that Kumbhakarna, क्षिप्रम् quickly, बोधयत may be informed

"Deliberating like this with me, Kumbhakarna is sleeping for the ninth day from now. He may be quickly informed (aroused)."
सतुसङ् ख्येमहाबाहुःककुदस्सर्वरक्षसाम् ।।6.60.18।।

वानरान् राजपुत्रौचक्षिप्रमेवहनिष्यति

सर्वरक्षसाम् among the Rakshasas, ककुदम् foremost, महाबाहुःतु endowed with broad shoulders, सः he, सङ् ख्ये many, वानरान् Vanaras, राजपुत्रौच princes, क्षिप्रमेव instantly, हनिष्यति will crush them.

"Endowed with broad shoulders, he is the foremost of Rakshasas. He will crush many Vanaras immediately and the two princes (Rama and Lakshmana)."
एषःकेतुःपरंसङ् ख्येमुख्योवैसर्वरक्षसाम् ।।6.60.19।।

कुम्भकर्णःसदाशेतेमूढोग्राम्यसुखेरतः ।


सर्वरक्षसाम् all Rakshasas, मुख्यः chief, सङ् ख्ये enumerated, परम् distinguished, केतुः foremost, एषः in that way कुम्भकर्णः Kumbhakarna, मूढः insensate, ग्राम्यसुखे in indecent delight in the form of sleep, रतः remains, सदा always, शेते addicted.

"He, (Kumbhakarna) is the foremost chief among all Rakshasas enumerated. In that way he is distinguished. But he is insensate, remains addicted always to indecent delight in the form of sleep."
रामेणहिनिरस्तस्यसङ्ग्रामेऽस्मिन् सुदारुणे ।।6.60.20।।

भविष्यतिनमेशोकःकुम्भकर्णेविबोधिते ।


कुम्भकर्णे Kumbhakarna, विबोधिते aroused, सुदारुणे very dreadful, अस्मिन् this, सङ्ग्रामे combat, रामेण with Rama, हिनिरस्तस्य to impel, मे to me, शोकः sad, नभविष्यति not take place.

" After Kumbhakarna is fully aroused, my sorrow impelled in this terrible comb at with Rama will not be there."
किंकरिष्याम्यहंतेनशक्रतुल्यबलेनहि ।।6.60.21।।

ईदृशेव्यसनेघोरेयोनसाह्यायकल्पते ।


यः he who, ईदृशे in such, घोरे dreadful, व्यसने weakness, साह्याय assistance, नकल्पते not able to, शक्रतुल्यबलेन equal to Indra in his strength, तेन by that, अहम् I am, किम् what, करिष्यामि can I do.

"What can I do if he does not assist me in such a dreadful comb at because of his weakness, even though he is equal to Indra in strength"
तेतुतद्वचनंश्रुत्वाराक्षसेन्द्रस्यराक्षसाः ।।6.60.22।।

जग्मुःपरमसम्भ्रान्ताःकुम्भकर्णनिवेशनम् ।


ते they, राक्षसाः Rakshasa, राक्षसेन्द्रस्य at king of Rakshasas, तत् वाक्यम् those words, श्रुत्वा on listening, परमसम्भ्रान्ताः highly puzzled, कुम्भकर्णनिवेशनम् Kumbhakarna's abode, जग्मुः went.

On listening to the Rakshasa king's words, the Rakshasas went to the abode of Kumbhakarna highly puzzled.
तांप्रविश्यमहाद्वारंसर्वतोयोजनायताम् ।।6.60.23।।

कुम्भकर्णगुहांरम्यांसर्वगन्धप्रवाहिनीम् ।

कुम्भकर्णस्यनिःश्वासादवधूतामहाबलाः ।।6.60.24।।

प्रतिष्ठमानाःकृच्छ्रेणयत्नात्प्रविविशुर्गुहाम् ।


महाद्वाराम् huge gates, सर्वतः all over, योजनायुताम् one yojana on all sides, सर्वगन्धप्रवाहिनीम् with all fragrant flowers food etc, रम्याम् beautiful, कुम्भकर्णगुहाम् residence of Kumbhakarna, प्रविश्य entered, कुम्भकर्णस्य Kumbhakarna's, निःश्वासात् by the breath, अवधूताः attendants, महाबलाः of mighty strength, कृच्छ्रेण pushed out, प्रतिष्ठमानाः pushed their way, यत्नात् attempt, गुहाम् residence, प्रविविशुः entered.

The Rakshasas entered the beautiful residence of Kumbhakarna which was one yojana on all sides with huge gates, taking fragrant garlands and foods (to wake up Kumbhakarna) from where they were pushed out by the breath of Kumbhakarna. The Rakshasas endowed with mighty strength pushed their way into the residence of Kumbhakarna and entered.
तांप्रविश्यगुहांरम्यांशुभांकाञ्चनकुट्टिमाम् ।।6.60.25।।

ददृशुर्नैरृतव्याघ्रंशयानंभीमविदर्शनम् ।


नैरृतव्याघ्रं tigers among Rakshasas, शुभाम् काञ्चनकुट्टिमाम् paved with gold and precious stones, रम्याम् delightful, तांगुहाम् home, प्रविव्य entered, शयानम् sleeping, भीमविदर्शनम् of terrible prowess, ददृशुः saw.

The tigers among Rakshasas entered the residence paved with gold and precious stones, a delightful one and saw sleeping Kumbhakarna of great prowess.
तेतुतंविकृतंसुप्तंविकीर्णमिवपर्वतम् ।।6.60.26।।

कुम्भकर्णंमहानिद्रंसहिताःप्रत्यबोधयन् ।


ते those, सहिताः collected together, विकृतम् of unnatural form, सुप्तम् sleeping on bed, विकीर्णम् scattered, पर्वतम् इव mountain like, महानिद्रम् in dead sleep, कुम्भकर्णम् Kumbhakarna, प्रत्यबोधयन् to awaken.

Those Rakshasas collected together started to awaken Kumbhakarna, who was like a scattered mountain in dead sleep.
ऊर्ध्वरोमाञ्चिततनुंश्वसन्तमिवपन्नगम् ।

भ्रामयन्तम् न्विश्श्वसैःशयानम् भीमविदर्शमम् ।।6.60.27।।

भीमनासापुटंतंतुपातालोविपुलाननम् ।

शयनेन्यस्तसर्वाङ्गंमेदोरुधिरगन्धिनम् ।।6.60.28।।

काञ्चनाङ्गदनद्धाङ्गंकिरीटिनमरिन्दमम् ।

ददृशुर्नैरृतव्याघ्रंकुम्भकर्णमरिन्दमम् ।।6.60.29।।


ऊर्ध्वरोमाञ्चिततनुम् body covered with bristling hair, पन्नगमिव like a serpent, श्वसन्तम् breathing, न्वििश्श्वसैः hissing heavily, भ्रामयन्तम् turning back, शयानम् sleeping, भीमविदर्शमम् of terrible, नीमनासापुटम् horrible nostrils, पातालविपुलाननम् face as vast as underworld, वयने, न्यस्तसर्वाङ्गम् all limbs stretched out, मेदोरुधिरगन्धिनम् emitting smell of fat and blood, काञ्चनाङ्गदनद्धाङ्गम् arms adorned with gold bracelets, किरीटिनम् wearing a crown, अरिन्दमम् tamer of foes, नैरृतव्याघ्रम् tiger of southwest, अरिमर्धनम् destroyer of enemies, तंकुम्भकर्णम् that Kumbhakarna, ददृशुः saw.

The Rakshasas saw Kumbhakarna, destroyer of enemies, the tiger of the southwest, tamer of foes, with his body fully covered with bristling hair, breathing heavily like a serpent with horrible nostrils, turning back with facemouth as vast as underworld all limbs stretched out, emitting smell of fat and blood, arms adorned with gold bracelets, wearing a crown, and sleeping.
ततश्चक्रुर्महात्मानंकुम्भकर्णाग्रतस्तदाचाग्रतः ।।6.60.30।।

मांसानांमेरुसङ्काशंराशिंपरमतर्पणम् ।


ततः thereafter, महात्मानः great soul, कुम्भकर्णस्य Kumbhakarna's, अग्रतः before, मांसानाम् meat, मेरुसङ्काशम् of the size of Meru mountain, परमतर्पणम् for pleasing immensely, राशिम् heap, चक्रुः placed.

Thereafter the Rakshasas placed a heap of me at the size of Meru Mountain to please him immensely.
मृगाणांमहिषाणांचवराहाणांचसञ्चयान् ।।6.60.31।।

चक्रुर्नैरृतशार्दूलाराशिमन्नस्यचाद्भुतम् ।


नैरृतशार्दूलाः tiger of southwest, मृगाणाम् antelopes, महिषाणांच buffaloes also, वराहाणांच swine also, सञ्चयान् in heaps, अन्नस्य food, अद्भुतम् marvellous, राशिंच a mass, चक्रुः placed.

The tigers of the south west Rakshasas piled up a mass of marvellous food like the me at of buffaloes, swine, and antelopes.
ततश्शोणितकुम्भांश्चमद्यानिविविधानिच ।।6.60.32।।

पुरस्तात्कुम्भकर्णस्यचक्रुस्त्रिदशशत्रवः ।


ततः then, त्रिदशत्रवः thirty three kinds, शोणितकुम्भांश्च pails of blood, विविधानि variety, मद्यानि wines, कुम्भकर्णस्य at Kumbhakarna, पुरस्तात् in front of, चक्रुः placed.

Then the Rakshasas placed thirty three kinds of meat, pails of blood, and a variety of wines in front of Kumbhakarna.
लिलिपुश्चपरार्ध्येनचन्दनेनपरन्तपम् ।।6.60.33।।

दिव्यैराश्वासयामामासुर्माल्यैर्गन्धैस्सुगन्धिभिः ।


परार्ध्येन highly fragrant, चन्दनेन sandal paste, परन्तपम् super, लिलिपुः to take in, दिव्यैः wonderful, सुगन्धिभिः fragrant, माल्यैः garland s, गन्दैःच and perfumes, आश्वासयामासुः daubed him.

Again, they daubed Kumbhakarna with highly fragrant sandal paste to take in fragrance, with wonderful garlands and perfumes.
धूपंसुगन्धांश्चससृजुस्तुष्टवुश्चपरन्ततम् ।।6.60.34।।

जलदाइवचानेदुर्यातुधानास्ततस्ततः ।


यातुधानाः incense, धूपम् burnt, गन्धाम् च sandal, ससृजुः to send forth, परन्तपम् supreme, तुष्टवुश्च to gratify, ततस्ततः here and there, जलदाःइव like clouds, आनेदुःच thundered.

They also burnt incense, sandal to send forth fragrance to gratify Kumbhakarna and thundered like clouds here and there.
शङ्खांनापूरयामासुश्शशाङ्कसदृशप्रभान् ।।6.60.35।।

तुमुलंयुगपच्छापिविनेदुश्चाप्यमर्षिताः ।


शशाङ्कसदृशप्रभान् like moon and shining brightly, शङ्खान् conchs, आपूरयामासुः blew, अमर्षिताः intolerant, युगपत् simultaneously, तुमुलम् loudly, विनेदुःचापि raised noise.

They blew moon size conches shining brightly. Intolerant Rakshasas raised loud noise simultaneously.
नेदुरास्फोटयामासुश्चिक्षिपुस्तेनिशाचराः ।।6.60.36।।

कुम्भकर्णविबोधार्थंचक्रुस्तेविपुलंस्वनम् ।


तेनिशाचराः those night rangers, नेदुः drawing near, अस्फोटयामासुः pushed the limbs, चिक्षिपुः clapped, कुम्भकर्णविबोधार्थम् to make Kumbhakarna wake up, विपुलम् loud, स्वनम् sound, चक्रुः did.

Those night rangers drawing the limbs of Kumbhakarna pushed his arms, clapping loudly to awaken him making a sound.
सशङ्खभेरीपणवप्रणादमास्फोटितक्षेवळितसिंहनादम् ।

दिशोद्रवन्तस्त्रिदिवंकीरन्तःश्रुत्वाविहंगाःसहसानिपेतुः ।।6.60.37।।


विहंगाः birds, सशङ्खभेरीपणवप्रणादम् by the sound of the conchs, आस्फोटितक्षेवळितसिंहनादम् clapping of arms, thundering and lion roar, श्रुत्वा hearing, दिशः direction, द्रवन्तः playing, त्रिदिवम् in the sky, कीरन्तः scattered, सहसा forcibly, निपेतुः fell down.

On hearing the conchs, and of the clapping of arms, and thundering like a lion, the birds playing in the sky got scattered and fell.
यदाभृशंतैर्निनदैर्महात्मानकुम्बकर्णोबुबुधेप्रसुप्तः ।

ततोमुसुण्ठीर्मुसलानिसर्वेरक्षोगणास्तेजगृहुर्गदाश्च ।।6.60.38।।


प्रसुप्तः sleeping, महात्मा great soul, कुम्भकर्णः Kumbhakarna, भृशम् angry, तैः they, निनदैः roared, यदा that way, नबुबुधे not awakened, ततः then सर्वे all, रक्षोगणाः Rakshasas, तम् him, मुसुण्ठीः mallets, मुसलानि bars, गदाश्च and maces, जगृहुः hit.

Kumbhakarna sleeping like that, could not be awakened. Angry Rakshasas roared and hit him with mallets and maces.
तंशैलशृङ्गैर्मुसलैर्गदाभिर्वृक्षैस्तरैर्मुद्गरमुष्टिभिश्च ।

सुखप्रसुप्तंभुविकुम्भकर्णंरक्षांस्युदग्राणितदानिजघ्नुः ।।6.60.39।।


तदा then, उदग्राणि exited, रक्षांसि Rakshasas, भुवि on the ground, सुखप्रसुप्तम् happily sleeping, तंकुम्भकर्णम् that Kumbhakarna, शैलशृङ्गैः with rocks and trees, मुसलैः bars, गदाभिः maces, मुद्गरमुष्टिभिःच with fists, निजघ्नुः not got up.

Then the excited Rakshasas could not wake up Kumbhakarna happily sleeping on the ground in spite of hitting with rocks and trees and their fists.
तस्यनिःश्वासवातेनकुम्भकर्णस्यरक्षसः ।

राक्षसाबलवन्तोऽपिस्थातुनाशक्नुवन्पुरः ।।6.60.40।।


रक्षसः Rakshasa, तस्यकुम्भकर्णस्य that Kumbhakarna's, निःश्वासवातेन by the breathing out, बलवन्तःअपि with such force, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, पुरः earlier, स्दातुम् to stand, नशक्नुवन् not possible.

Unable to bear the force of the breathing out of Kumbhakarna, the Rakshasas could not stand.
ततःपरिहितागाढंराक्षसाभीमविक्रमाः ।

मृदङ्गपणवान् भेरीश्शङ्खकुम्भगणांस्तथा ।।6.60.41।।


ततः that, भीमविक्रमः of terrible valour, राक्षसाः Rakshasa, गाढम् resorted to, परिहिताः abandoned, मृदङ्गपणवान् drums and tom toms, भेरीः drums, तथा that way, शङ्खकुम्भगणान् pails of clay.

The Rakshasas of terrible valour resorted to abandoned drums and tom toms that way and pails of clay.
दशराक्षससाहस्रंयुगपत्पर्यवारयन् ।

नीलाञ्जनचयाकारंतेतुतंप्रत्यबोधयन् ।।6.60.42।।

अभिघ्नन्तोनदन्तश्चनैवसंविविदेतुसः ।


दशराक्षससाहस्रम् ten thousand Rakshasas, युगपत् all together simultaneously, पर्यवारयन् surrounded, तेतु but he, नीलाञ्जनचयाकारम् like a mass of antimony, तम् him, अभिघ्नन्तः striking, नदन्तःनैव even made loud noise, तम् him, प्रत्यबोधयन् tried to wake, बोधयन् shouted, सः he, संविविदे not responded.

Ten thousand Rakshasas surrounded him all at once like a mass of antimony striking him and even made a loud noise. But he never responded.
यदाचैनंनशेकुस्तेप्रतिबोधयितुंतदा ।।6.60.43।।

ततोगुरुतरंयत्नंदारुणंसमुपाक्रमन् ।


ते they, यदा that way, एनम् in that way, प्रतिबोधयितुम् called him again and again, नशेकुः not got up, तदा then, ततः thereafter, गुरुतरम् difficult, दारुणम् dreadful, यत्नम् effort, समुपाक्रमन् approaching.

They called him again and again, but he never got up. Then they made a difficult and dreadful effort approaching him.
आश्वानुष्ट्रान् खरन्नागान् जघ्नुर्दण्डकशाङ्कुशैः ।।6.60.44।।

भेरीशङ्खमृदङ्गांश्चसर्वप्राणैरवादयन् ।


आश्वान् horses, उष्ट्रान् camels, खरान् donkeys, नागान् elephants, दण्डकशाङ्कुशैः with staffs whips and goads, आजघ्नुः urged, भेरीशङ्खमृदङ्गान् च kettle drums, conchs, clay tom toms, सर्वप्राणैः with all their might, अवादयन् pounded on him.

They urged horses, elephants, camels, and donkeys to pounce on him, whipping with staff, whips, and goads.
निजघ्नुश्चास्यगात्राणिमहाकाष्ठकङ्करैः ।।6.60.45।।

मुद्गरैर्मुसलैश्चापिसर्वप्राणसमुद्यतैः ।


अस्य his, गात्राणि voice, माहाकाष्ठकङ्करैः with heavy logs of wood, सर्वप्राणसमुद्यतैः with all their strength, मुसलैश्चापि with mallets, निजघ्नुः not wake up.

The city of Lanka including the woods was filled with that noise. They pushed him with mallets with all their strength, but he did not wake up.
तेननादेवमहतालङ्कासमभिपूरिता ।।6.60.46।।

सपर्वतवनासर्वासोऽपिनैवप्रबुध्यते ।


महता great, तेननादेन by that noise, सपर्वतवना all mountains, सर्वा all, लङ्का Lanka, समभिपूरिता filled with, सःअपि even then, नैवप्रबुध्यते did not wake up.

All Lanka and mountains were filled by the great noise made by the Rakshasas. Even then Kumbhakarna did not wake up.
ततस्सहस्रंभेरीणांयुगसत्समहन्यत ।।6.60.47।।

मृष्टकाञ्चनकोणानामासक्तानांसमन्ततः ।


ततः then, मृष्टकाञ्चनकोणानाम् polished gold sticks, समन्ततः everywhere,आसक्तानाम् continuously, भेरीणाम् drums, सहस्रम् thousand, समहन्यत collected.

Then was collected a thousand drums and beaten with polished gold sticks on all sides continuously.
एवमप्यन्तिद्रिस्तुयदानैवप्रबुध्यत ।।6.60.48।।

शापस्यवशमापन्नस्ततःक्रुद्धानिशाचराः ।


एवमपि like that, शासस्य because of curse, वशम् under the spell of, आपन्नः wrap, अन्तिद्रिः, यदा like that, नैवप्रबुध्यते not wakened, ततः then, निशाचराः Rakshasas, क्रुद्धाः enraged.

Wrapped in sleep like that because of the spell of the curse, he had not wakened. The Rakshasas got enraged.
महाक्रोधसमाविष्टास्सर्वेभीमपराक्रमाः ।।6.60.49।।

तद्रक्षोबोधयिष्यन्तश्चक्रुरन्येपराक्रमम् ।


भीमपराक्रमाः endowed with mighty valour, सर्वे all, महाक्रोधसमाविष्टाः, अन्ये others, तत् that, रक्षः guards, बोधयिष्यन्तः rousing, पराक्रमम् prowess, चक्रुः started.

All the Rakshasas endowed with mighty prowess became enraged and others started to arouse with all their strength.
अन्येभेरीस्समाजघ्नुरन्येचक्रुर्महास्वनम् ।।6.60.50।।

केशानन्येप्रलुलुपुःकर्णावन्येदशन्तिच ।


अन्ये others, भेरीः drums, समाजघ्नुः beat, अन्ये some others, महास्वनम् shouted at the pitch of their voice, चक्रुः started, अन्ये some others, केशान् hair, प्रलुलुपुः pulled, अन्ये some, कर्णौ ears, दशन्तिच bit.

While some were beating the drums, some shouted at the pitch of their voice, some started pulling his hair and some bit his ears.
उदकुम्बशतान्यन्येसमसिञ्चन्तकर्णयोः ।।6.60.51।।

नकुम्भकर्णःपस्पन्देमहानिद्रावशंगतः ।


अन्ये others, उदकुम्भशतानि hundreds of pails of water, कर्णयोः in the ears, समसिञ्चन्त distressed, महानिद्रावशंगतः under the spell of deep sleep, कुम्भकर्णः Kumbhakarna, नपस्पन्दे not wake up.

Some poured hundreds of pails of water into ears, distressed that he did not wake up under the spell of deep sleep.
अन्येचबलिनस्तस्यकूटमुद्गरपाणयः ।।6.60.52।।

मूर्ध्निवक्षसिगात्रेषुपातन् कूटमुद्गरान् ।


कूटमुद्गरपाणयः mallet fixed in the nails, अन्ये others, बलिनः strong, तस्य his, मूर्ध्नि forehead, वक्षसि on chest, गात्रेषु on throat, कूटमुद्गरान् mallets, पातयन् let fall.

Some had their nails fixed with mallets, letting their mallets fall on the forehead, on the chest and throw at of Kumbhakarna.
रज्जुबन्धनबद्धाभिश्शतघ्नीभिश्चसर्वशः ।।6.60.53।।

वध्यमानोमहाकायोनप्राबुध्यतराक्षसः ।


रज्जुबन्धनबद्धाभिः fastened with cords, शतघ्नीभिः Satagnhi, सर्वशः all over, वध्यमानः fastened with, महाकायः the huge body, राक्षसः Rakshasa, नप्राबुध्यत not awakened.

Some struck with sataghni (mace) all over his huge body fastened with cords.
वारणानांसहस्रंचशरीरेऽस्यप्रधावितम् ।।6.60.54।।

कुम्बकर्णस्तदाबुद् ध्वास्पर्शंपरमबुध्यत ।


वारणानाम् elephants, सहस्रम् a thousand, अस्य his, शरीरे body, प्रधावितम् walk over, तदा then, कुम्बकर्णः Kumbhakarna, बुद् ध्वा felt, स्पर्शंपरम् felt the touch, अबुध्यत not understand.

A thousand elephants were made to walk over his body. Then Kumbhakarna felt the touch but did not understand.
सपात्यमानैर्गिरिशृङ्गवृक्षैरचिन्तयंस्तान्विपुलान् प्रहारान् ।

निद्राक्ष्यात् क्षुद्भयपीडितश्चविजृम्भमाणस्सहसोत्पपाप ।।6.60.55।।


सः he, पात्यमानैः descending, गिरिशृङ्गवृक्षैः mountain peaks, trees, तान् sensation, विपुलान् huge, प्रहारान् hitting, अचिन्तयन् not knowing, निद्राक्ष्यात् getting out of sleep, क्षुद्भयपीडितश्च tormented by hunger, विजृम्भमाणः sprang up, सहसा suddenly, उत्पपात awakened.

Tormented by hunger and hit by mountain peaks and huge trees he sprang up suddenly descended and awakened.
सनागभोगाचलशृङ्गकल्पौविक्षिप्यबाहूगिरशृङ्गसारौ ।

निवृत्यवक्त्रंवडवामुखाभंनिशाचरोऽसौविकृतंजजृम्भे ।।6.60.56।।


सः he, असौ devoid of beauty, निशाचरः Rakshasas, नागभोगाचलशृङ्गकृतौ like the coils of cobra, गिरिशृङ्गसारौ hard as mountain tops, बाहू limbs, विक्षिप्य thrown about, वडवामुखाभम् like submarine fire, वक्त्रम् mouth, विकृतम् unnatural, जजृम्भे yawned.

Kumbhakarna, devoid of any beauty threw out his limbs which were like the coils of cobra and as hard as mountain tops, his mouth was unnatural like a submarine fire as he yawned.
तस्यजाजृम्भमाणस्यवक्त्रंपातालसन्निभम् ।

ददृशेमेरुशृङ्गाग्रेदिवाकरइवोदितः ।।6.60.57।।


जाजृम्भमाणस्य as he yawned, तस्य his, पातालसन्निभम् resembling the underworld, वक्त्रम् mouth, मेरुशृङ्गाग्रे top of the Meru mountain, उदितः risen over, दिवाकरःइव like the sun, ददृशे appeared.

As he yawned his mouth resembling the underworld, it was like the Sun rose over the top of Mount Meru.
सजृम्भमाणोऽतिबलःप्रद्धोनिशाचरः ।

निःश्वासश्चास्यसञ्जज्ञेपर्वतादिवमारुतः ।।6.60.58।।


अतिबलः very strong, सःनिशाचरः that night ranger, जृम्भमाणः as he yawned continuously, प्रबुद्धः awakened, पर्वतात् from the mountain, मारुतः wind इव like, अस्य his, निःश्वासः breath सञ्जज्ञे blowing.

As the mighty night ranger awakened and yawned continuously his breath was like wind blowing from the mountain.
रूपमुत्तिष्ठतस्तस्यकुम्भकर्णस्यतद्बभौ ।

तपान्तेसबलाकस्यमेघस्येवविवर्षतः ।।6.60.59।।


उत्तिष्ठतः as he woke up, कुम्भकर्णस्य Kumbhakarna's, तत् रूपम् form, युगान्ते universal dissolution, सबलाकस्य twilight, सर्वभूतानि all beings, मेघस्येव like cloud, विवर्षितः about to rain, बभौ appeared.

As Kumbhakarna woke up he appeared like the time spirit at the time of dissolution of the universe like a rainy cloud at twilight as if seeking to consume all beings.
तस्यदीप्ताग्निसदृशेविद्युत्सदृशवर्चसी ।

ददृशातेमहानेत्रेदीप्ताविवमहाग्रहौ ।।6.60.60।।


तस्यदीप्ताग्निसदृशे like blazing fire, विद्युत्सदृशवर्चसी dazzling like lightning, तस्यमहानेत्रे his huge eyes, दीप्तौ glowing, महाग्रहौइव like huge planets, ददृशाते looked.

His huge eyes were like blazing fire dazzling like lightning glowing like two huge planets.
ततस्त्वदर्शयन् सर्वान्भक्ष्यांश्चविविधान् बहून् ।

वराहान्महिषांश्चैवबभक्षसमहाबलः ।।6.60.61।।


ततः thereafter, विविधान् several, बहून् many, सर्वान् all kinds, भक्ष्यान् च food items, वराहान् hogs, महिषांश्चैव buffaloes also, अदर्शयन् having seen, सः he, बभक्ष ate.

Thereafter having seen several kinds of food items of hogs, buffaloes he ate them.
आददुन्भुक्षितोमांसंशोणितंतृषितःपिबन् ।

मेदःकुम्भांश्चमद्यांश्चपपौशक्ररिपुस्तदा ।।6.60.62।।


तदा then, बुभुक्षितः after eating, शक्ररिपुः enemy of Indra, मांसम् meat, आददुन् thirsty, तृषितः being thirsty, शोणितम् blood, पिबन् drank, मेदःकुम्भाश्च pails of fat, मद्यांश्च wine, पपौ drank.

After eating the meat and feeling thirsty, the enemy of Indra drank blood, pails of fat and wine.
ततस्तृप्तइतिज्ञात्वासमुत्पेतुर्निशाचराः ।

शिरोभिश्चप्रणम्यैनंसर्वतःपर्यवारयन् ।।6.60.63।।


ततः there upon, निशाचराः night ranger, तृप्तःइति satisfied in that way, ज्ञात्वा realizing, समुत्पेतुः got up, एनम् all of them, शिरोभिः heads bent down, प्रणम्य greeting, सर्वतः all, पर्यवारयन् surrounded.

There upon the night rangers realizing that he got up, came before him, and greeted him with heads bent down.
निद्राविशदनेत्रस्तुकलुषीकृतलोचनः ।

चारयन् सर्वतोदृष्टिंतान् ददर्शनिशाचरान् ।।6.60.64।।


निद्राविशदनेत्रस्तु, with sleepy eyes, कलुषीकृतलोचनः casting his glance, सर्वतः all over, दृष्टिम् gaze, चारयन् rangers, तान् extended, निशाचरान् night rangers, ददर्श looked at.

With sleepy eyes casting his glance at the night rangers looked at all of them.
ससर्वान् सान्त्वयामासनैरृतान् नैरृतर्षभः ।

बोधनाद्विस्मितश्चापिराक्षसानिदमब्रवीत् ।।6.60.65।।


सः he, नैरृतर्षभः bull of the south west, सर्वान् all, नैरृतान् south west, सान्त्वयामास soothed, बोधनात् awakened, विस्मितश्चापि astonished of his waking up, राक्षसान् Rakshasas, इदम् thus, अब्रवीत् spoke.

He, the bull among the south west region, astonished at his awakening, soothed, and spoke to all the Rakshasas in this way.
किमर्थमहमादृत्यभवद्भिःप्रतिबोधितः ।

कच्छित्सुकुशलंराज्ञोभयंवानेषनकिम् ।।6.60.66।।


अहम् I am, भवद्भिः by you, आदृत्य taken effort, किमर्थम् What for, प्रतिबोधितः made known, राज्ञः king, सुकुशलंकच्छित् hope he is fine, एष any, किम् why, भयम् fear of danger, न not.

"What have you done to wake me Hope King is fine and has no fear of danger"
अथवाध्रुवमन्येभ्योभयंपरमुपस्थितम् ।

यदर्थमेवत्वरितैर्भवद्भिःप्रतिबोधितः ।।6.60.67।।


अथवा or else, अन्येभ्यः by any one, परम् great, भयम् fear, उपस्थितम् has come, ध्रुवम् from enemies, यदर्थमेव for that cause, त्वरितैः hastily, भवद्भिः by you, प्रतिबोधितः you may let me know.

"Is there any fear of some enemies Is it because of that you have woken me up Let me know."
अद्यराक्षसराजस्यभयमुत्पाटयाम्यहम् ।

दारयिष्येमहेन्द्रंवाशातयिष्येतथानलम् ।।6.60.68।।


अद्य devour, अहम् I will, राक्षसराजस्य Rakshasa king's, भयम् fear, उत्पाटयामि eradicate, महेन्द्रम् Mahendra, दारयिष्ये destroy, तथा like that, अनलम् fire, शातयिष्ये alleviate

"I will devour Rakshasa king's fear. I will eradicate even Mahendra (mountain) or alleviate fire."
नह्यल्पकारणेसुप्तंबोधयिष्यतिमांगुरुः ।

तदाख्यातार्थतत्त्वेनमत्प्रबोधनकारणम् ।।6.60.69।।


सुप्तम् sleeping, माम् me, अल्पकारणे for small reason, नबोधयिष्यतिहि awaken, तत् that, मत्प्रबोधनकारणम् the reason for waking me, अर्थतत्त्वेन truly, गुरुः guru, अख्यात tell me.

"For a small reason he will not awaken me. Tell me the reason truly for waking me."
एवंब्रुवाणंसम्रब्धंकुम्भकर्णमरिन्दमम् ।

यूपाक्षःसचिवोराज्ञःकृताञ्जलिरभाषत ।।6.60.70।।


एवम् in that manner, ब्रुवाणम् spoken, सम्रब्दम् full of anger, अरिन्दमम् tamer of enemies, कुम्भकर्णम् Kumbhakarna, राज्ञः king, सचिवः minister, यूपाक्षः Yupaksha, कृताञ्जलिः joined palms, अभाषत replied.

Kumbhakarna, tamer of enemies having spoken in that way in anger, Yupaksha, a minister joined palms and replied to him.
ननोदेवकृतंकिञ्चिद्भयमस्तिकदाचन ।

मानुषान्नोभयंराजंस्तुमुलंसम्प्रबाधते ।।6.60.71।।


राजन् king, नः no, कदाचन danger, देवकृतम् Devas did, भयम् fear, किंचित् a small, नास्ति destruction, मानुषात् by human, तुमुलम् is pressing, भयम् danger, सम्प्रबाधते causing pain.

"O King! there is no danger from Devas. Only a small destruction done by a human is pressing and causing pain."
नदैत्यदानवेभ्योवाभयमस्तिहितादृशम् ।

यादृशंमानुषंराजन् भयमस्मानुपस्थितम् ।।6.60.72।।


राजन् king, मानुषम् human, यादृशम् this kind, भयम् danger, अस्मान् for us, उपस्थितम् has arisen, तादृशम् the kind of, भयम् fear, दैत्यदानवेभ्योवा either from Daityas or Danavas, नास्तिहि not there.

"O King! This kind of fear from humans has not arisen for us either from Daityas or Danavas."
वानरैःपर्वताकारैर्लङ्केयंपरिवारिता ।

सीताहरणसन्तप्ताद्रामान्नस्तुमुलंभयम् ।।6.60.73।।


इयंलङ्का this Lanka, पर्वताकारैः mountain like form, वानरैः Vanaras, परिवारिता accompanied by, सीताहरणसन्तप्तात् by abduction of Sita, रामात् from Rama, नः not, तुमुलम् little, भयम् fear.

This Lanka is seized by a mountain like army of Vanaras. By the abduction of Sita, there is little fear from Rama.
एकेनवानरेणेयंपूर्वंदग्धामहापुरी ।

कुमारोनिहतश्चाक्षस्सानुयात्रःसकुञ्जरः ।।6.60.74।।


एकेन alone, वानरेण by Vanara, पूर्वम् earlier, इयम् this, महापुरी great city, दग्धा burnt, सानुयात्रः followers, सकुञ्जरः his elephants, कुमारः son अक्षःच Aksha, निहतः killed.

"Earlier this great city was burnt by a single Vanara who killed Prince Aksha, and his elephants and followers."
स्वयंरक्षोधिपश्चापिपौलस्त्योदेवकण्टकः ।

मृतेतिसंयुगेमुक्तोरामेणादित्यतेजसा ।।6.60.75।।


रक्षोधिपः Lord of Rakshasas, देवकण्टकः enemy of Devatas, स्वयम् himself, पौलस्त्यः Paulastya, अपि and, संयुगे in encounter, आदित्यतेजसा having the splendour of sun, रामेण to Rama, मृतिइति subjected to death, मुक्तः let go.

"Rakshasa king, scion of sage Paulastya, an enemy of Devatas, was let off from death by Rama who has the splendour of Sun."
यन्नदेवैःकृतोराजानापिदैत्यैर्नदानवैः ।

कृतःसइहरामेणविमुक्तःप्राणसंशयात् ।।6.60.76।।


सःराजा that king, देवैः Devas, यत् such, नकृतः not done, दैत्यैः Daityas, न not, दानवैः Danavas, न not, इह here, रामेण by Rama, कृतः done, प्राणसंशयात् from the verge of death, विमुक्तः escaped.

"The king could escape from the verge of death and such an act was never done by Daityas or Danavas earlier in the encounter."
सयूपाक्ष्वचश्श्रुत्वाभ्रातुर्युधिपराभवम् ।

कुम्भकर्णोविवृत्ताक्षोयूपाक्षमिदमब्रवीत् ।।6.60.77।।


सःकुम्भकर्णः that Kumbhakarna, यूपाक्ष्वचः Yupaksha's words, युधि in encounter, भ्रातुः brother, पराभवम् insult, श्रुत्वा hearing, विवृत्ताक्षः rolling his eyes, यूपाक्षम् to Yupaksha, इदम् this, अब्रवीत् spoke.

On hearing the words of Yupaksha, regarding the insult of his brother Kumbhakarna said this rolling his eyes.
सर्वमद्यैवयूपाक्षहरिसैन्यंसलक्ष्मणम् ।

राघवंचरणेजित्वाततोद्रक्ष्यामिरावणम् ।।6.60.78।।


यूपाक्ष Yupaksha, अद्यैव now itself, सर्वम् all, हरिसैन्यम् Vanara army, सलक्ष्मणम् along with Lakshmana, राघवंच and Raghava, रणे in war, जित्वा conquering, ततः then, रावणम् Ravana, द्रक्ष्यामि will see.

"I will conquer now the Vanara army along with Lakshmana and Raghava in war and see Ravana."
राक्षसांस्तर्पयिष्यामिहरीणांमांसशोणितैः ।

रामलक्ष्मणयोश्चापिस्वयंपास्यामिशोणितम् ।।6.60.79।।


हरीणाम् Vanaras, मांसशोणितैः by flesh and blood, राक्षसान् Rakshasas, तर्पयिष्यामि make them contended, रामलक्ष्मणयोः Rama and Lakshmana, शोणितम् blood, स्वयम् I will, पास्यामि you may see.

"I will satisfy the Rakshasas with the flesh and blood of Rama and Lakshmana. You will see."
तत्तस्यवाक्यंब्रुवतोनिशम्यसगर्वितंरोषविवृद्धदोषम् ।

महोदरोनैरृतयोधमुख्यःकृताञ्जलिर्वाक्यमिदंबभाषे ।।6.60.80।।


ब्रुवतः replied, तस्य his, गर्वितम् proudly, रोषविवृद्धदोषम् words full of arrogance, तत् वाक्यम् his words, निशम्य submitted, नैरृतयोधमुख्यः chief of army of Rakshasas, सः he, महोदरः Mahodara, कृताञ्जलिः offering salutations, इदंवाक्यम् these words, बभाषे spoke.

Hearing the words of the reply of Kumbhakarna, filled with arrogance and pride, Mahodara, chief of the army, submitted with folded hands and said.
रावणस्यवचःश्रुत्वागुणदोषौविमृश्यच ।

पश्चादपिमहाबाहो शत्रून्युधिविजेष्यसि ।।6.60.81।।


महाबाहो mighty armed, रावणस्य Ravana's, वचः words, श्रुत्वा hearing, गुणदोषौ advantages and disadvantages, विमृश्यच assessing, पश्चात् अपि after that, युधि in war, शत्रून् enemy, विजेष्यसि conquer.

"O Mighty Armed One! You hear from Ravana the advantages and disadvantages and thereafter assess the enemy to conquer."
महोदरवचश्श्रुत्वाराक्षसैःपरिवारितः ।

कुम्भकर्णोमहातेजास्सम्प्रतस्थेमहाबलः ।।6.60.82।।


महातेजाः extraordinarily energetic, महाबलः mighty strong, कुम्भकर्णः Kumbhakarna, महोदरवचः to Mahodara, श्रुत्वा hearing, राक्षसैः Rakshasas, परिवारितः surrounded, सम्प्रतस्थे went in.

Kumbhakarna of extraordinary energy, mighty strong, on hearing Mahodara went in surrounded by Rakshasas.
सुप्तमुत्थाप्यभीमाक्षंभीमरूपपराक्रमम् ।

राक्षसास्त्वरिताजुग्मर्दशग्रीन्विवेशनम् ।।6.60.83।।


राक्षसाः Rakshasas, भीमाक्षम् frightful eyes, भीमरूपपराक्रमम् of fierce strength, सुप्तम् sleeping, उत्थाप्य arousing, त्वरिताः quickly, दशग्रीन्विवेशनम् abode of ten headed king, जग्मुः went.

After rousing up Kumbhakarna of frightful eyes and fierce strength from sleep the Rakshasas quickly went to the abode of the ten headed king.
ततोगत्वादशग्रीवमासीनंपरमासने ।

ऊचुर्बद्धाञ्जलिपुटास्सर्वएवनिशाचराः ।।6.60.84।।


सर्वे all, तेनिशाचराः those night rangers, परमासने excellent seat, आसीनम् seated, दशग्रीवम् tenheaded king, अनिगम्य reaching, बद्धाञ्जलिपुटाः greeting with folded hands, ऊचुः spoke.

All those night rangers, approaching the tenheaded king seated on an excellent se at greeted with folded hands and said.
प्रबुद्धोऽयंकुम्भकर्णभ्रातातेराक्षसेश्वर ।

कथंतत्रैवनिर्यातुद्रक्ष्यसेतमिहागतम् ।।6.60.85।।


राक्षसेश्वर Rakshasa Lord, तेभ्राता your brother, अयंकुम्भकर्णः this Kumbhakarna, प्रबुद्धः greetings, तत्रैव to you, निर्यातुकथम् tell me what to do, इह now, आगतम् have come, तम् to you, द्रक्ष्यसे What order.

"O Rakshasa Lord! Your brother Kumbhakarna has come here. Greetings to you. Tell us what to do."
रावणस्त्वब्रवीद्धृष्टोराक्षसांस्तानुपस्थितान् ।

द्रष्टुमेनमिहेच्छामियथान्यायंचपूज्यताम् ।।6.60.86।।


रावणस्तु Ravana on his part, हृष्टः cheerful, उपस्थितान् seated, तान् him, राक्षसान् Rakshasas, अब्रवीत् said, एवम् in that way, इह now, द्रष्टुम् to see, इच्छामि desire, यथान्यायम् as propriety demands, पूज्यताम् to honour.

Ravana on his part said this to the Rakshasas feeling cheerful. "Honour him as propriety demands. I wish to see him."
तथेत्युक्त्वातुतेसर्वेपुनरागम्यराक्षसाः ।

कुम्भकर्णमिदंवाक्यमूचूरावणचोदिताः ।।6.60.87।।


रावणचोदिताः taking leave from Ravana, ते they, सर्वे all, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, तथेति returning back, उक्त्वा said, पुनः again, आगम्य approaching, कुम्भकर्णम् Kumbhakarna, इदम् these, वाक्यम् words, ऊचुः said.

All the Rakshasas taking leave from Ravana said this again approaching Kumbhakarna.
द्रष्टुंत्वांकांक्षतेराजासर्वराक्षसपुङ्गवः ।

गमनेक्रियतांबुद्धिर्भ्रातरंसम्प्रहर्षयः ।।6.60.88।।


सर्वराक्षसपुङ्गवः all Rakshasa leaders, राजा king, त्वाम् you, द्रष्टुम् to see, कांक्षते desiring, गमने to start, बुद्धिः make up your mind, क्रियताम् to depart, भ्रातरम् brother, सम्प्रहर्षय be pleased.

All the Rakshasa leaders said to Kumbhakarna," the king desires to see you. Start. Make up your mind. Be pleased to depart to your brother."
कुम्भकर्णस्तुदुर्धर्षोभ्रातुराज्ञायशासनम् ।

तथेत्युक्त्वामहावीर्यश्शयनादुत्पपातह ।।6.60.89।।


दुर्धर्षः formidable, महावीर्यः courageous, कुम्भकर्णस्तु Kumbhakarna also, भ्रातुः brother, शासनम् order, आज्ञाय instruction, तथाइति saying yes, उक्त्वा said, शयनात् from the bed, उत्पपातह rose up.

Formidable and courageous Kumbhakarna also got up from sleep saying 'yes' and rose up.
प्रक्षाळ्यवदनंहृष्टस्स्नातःपरमभूषितः ।

पिपासुस्त्वरयामासपानंबलसमीरणम् ।।6.60.90।।


हृष्टः joyful, वदनम् face, प्रक्षाल्य washing, स्नातः bath, परमभूषितः decked with best of ornaments, पिपासुः thirsty, बलसमीरणम् that which increases strength, पानम् drink, त्वरयामास ordered to get soon.

Joyful Kumbhakarna, washed his face, had a bath and being thirsty ordered a drink that can increase his strength.
ततस्तेत्वरितास्तत्रराक्षसारावणाज्ञया ।

मद्यकुम्भांश्चविविधान् क्षिप्रमेवोपहारयन् ।।6.60.91।।


ततः thereafter, रावणाज्ञयाः by the order of Ravana, त्वरिताः quickly, ते they, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, तत्र then, विविधान् several, मद्यकुम्भांश्च pots of wine, क्षिप्रमेव immediately, उपहारयन् presented.

By the order of Ravana hurriedly they got several kinds of wine in pots.
पीत्वाघटसहस्रेद्वेगमनायोपचक्रमे ।

ईषत्समुत्कटोमत्तस्तेजोबलसमन्वितः ।।6.60.92।।


द्वे two, घटसहस्रे thousand pots, पीत्वा drinking, ईषत् slightly, समुत्कटः excited, मत्तः inebriated, तेजोबलसमन्वितः replenished with strength and energy, गमनाय started, उपचक्रमे readied to depart.

(Kumbhakarna) Having drunk two thousand pots of wine, slightly excited and inebriated and replenished with strength and energy was ready to depart.
कुम्भकर्णोबभौहृष्टःकालान्तकयमोपमः ।

भ्रातुस्सभवनंगच्छन्रक्षोबलसमन्वितः ।।6.60.93।।

कुम्भकर्णःपदन्यासैरकम्पयतमेन्दिीम् ।


रक्षोबलसमन्वितः surrounded by Rakshasa army, भ्रातुः brother, भवनम् residence, गच्छन् going, हृष्टः happily, कुम्भकर्णः Kumbhakarna, कालान्तकयमोपमः like the Lord of death, बभौ looked, कुम्भकर्णः Kumbhakarna, न्यासैः strides, मेन्दिीम् earth, अकम्पयत shook.

Kumbhakarna surrounded by Rakshasas going to his brother's abode happily looked like the Lord of death bent on destroying the creation. He took strides which shook the earth.
सराजमार्गंवपुषाप्रकाशयन् सहस्ररश्मिर्धरणीमिवांशुभिः ।

जगामतत्राञ्जलिमालयावृतश्शतक्रतुर्गेहमिवस्वयम्भुवः ।।6.60.94।।


सहस्ररश्मिः thousand rayed luminary, धरणीमिव like the earth, सः he, राजमार्गम् royal path, वपुषा deity, प्रकाशयन् brightened, तत्र there, अञ्जलिमालया garland of joined palms, वृतः circle, गेहम् home, शतक्रतुः performed a hundred horse sacrifices, स्वयम्भुव: like the Brahma, जगाम went.

Kumbhakarna went like the thousand rayed Sun illuminating the earth by his splendour brightening the royal path, greeted by a circle of Rakshasas joining palms like Indra who has done a hundred sacrifices went to the abode of selfborn Brahma.
तंराजमार्गस्थममित्रघातिनंवनौकसस्तेसहसाबहिस्स्थिताः ।

दृष्टवाऽप्रमेयंगिरिशृङ्गकल्पंवितत्रसुस्तेहरियूथपालाः ।।6.60.95।।


अमित्रघातिनम् destroyer of enemies, अप्रमेयम् immeasurably tall, गिरिशृङ्गकल्पम् looked like the mountain peak, राजमार्गस्थम् through the royal path, तम् him, बहिःस्थिताः those who were there, तेवनौकसः those Vanaras, दृष्टवा seeing, हरियूथपालाःसह including the Vanara leaders, वितत्रसुः got alarmed.

And then the Vanaras and the leaders of the Vanara army who were present looked at the immeasurably tall form of Kumbhakarna walking through the royal path and got alarmed.
केचिच्छरण्यंशरणंस्मरामंव्रजन्तिकेचिद् व्यथिताःपतन्ति ।

केचिद्धशस्मव्यथिताःपतन्तिकेचिद्भयार्ताभुविशेरतेस्म ।।6.60.96।।


केचित् indeed, शरण्यम् refuge, रामम् Rama, शरणंव्रजन्तिस्म who was capable of giving shelter, केचित् some, व्यथिताः became panicked, पतन्तिस्म fell down, केचित् some, व्यथिताः panic, दिशः directions, पतन्तिस्म ran, केचित् भयार्ताः some out of fear, भुवि ground, शेरतेस्म lay down.

Indeed, some took refuge from Rama who could give shelter, some fell down in panic, some went in all directions in panic, and some out of fear lay down on the ground.
तमद्रिशृङ्गप्रतिमंकिरीटिनंस्पृशन्तमादित्यमिवाऽत्मतेजसा ।

वनौकसःप्रेक्ष्यविवृद्धमद्भुतं 3 भयार्धितादुद्रुविरेततस्ततः ।।6.60.97।।


अद्रिशृङ्गप्रतिमम् like the peak of a mountain, किरीटिनम् crowned, आत्मतेजसा selfluminous, आदित्यम् like the Sun, स्पृशन्तमिव as if touching, अद्भुतम् wonderful, विवृद्धम् grown in size, तम् him, वनौकसः Vanaras, प्रेक्ष्य seeing, भयार्दिताः oppressed with fear, ततस्ततः here and there, दुद्रुविरे ran.

Oppressed with fear the Vanaras ran here and there seeing the form of Kumbhakarna that was like the peak of a mountain as if touching the selfluminous Sun, crowned and wonderful, grown in size.
