Sloka & Translation

[Defeated by Rama, Ravana asks the Rakshasas to awaken Kumbhakarna. With great effort of Rakshasas, Kumbhakarna gets up from slumber.]

sapraviśyapurīṅlaṅkāṅrāmabāṇabhayārdhitaḥ .

bhagnadarpastadārājābabhūvavyathitēndriyaḥ ।।6.60.1।।


tadā then, saḥ he, rājā king, laṅkāṅpurīm Lanka, praviśya entered, rāmabāṇabhayārdhitaḥ fearing the arrow of Rama, bhagnadarpaḥ vanity crushed, vyathitēndriyaḥ lost control over senses, babhūva felt.

Then the king of Lanka after entering the city of Lanka, felt humiliated by Rama's arrow, vanity crushed and had lost control over his senses.
mātaṅgaivasiṅhēnagaruḍēnēvapannagaḥ .

abhibhūtō.bhavadrājārāghavēṇamahātmanā ।।6.60.2।।


rājā king, siṅhēna lion, mātaṅgaḥiva like an elephant, garuḍēna by Garuda, pannagaiva like a serpent, mahātmanā high souled, rāghavēṇa at Rama, abhibhūtaḥ humiliated, abhavat remained.

Overcome by humiliation from the high souled Rama, Ravana remained like an elephant rejected by a lion and a serpent rejected by Garuda.
brahmadaṇḍapratīkānāṅvidyutsadṛśavarcasām .

smaranrāghavabāṇānāṅvivyathērākṣasēśvaraḥ ।।6.60.3।।


rākṣasēśvaraḥ Lord of Rakshasas, brahmadaṇḍapratīkānām resembling Brahmadanda (A comet seen at the time of dissolution), vidyutsadṛśavarcasām emitted an unsteady light like lightning, rāghavamāṇānam Rama on his part, smaran recalling, vivyathē disquieted.

The Lord of Rakshasas remained disquieted recalling the arrows of Rama which emitted light like lightning, resembling Brahmadanda.
nakāñcanamayaṅdivyamāśrityaparamāsanam .

viprēkṣamāṇōrakṣāṅsirāvaṇōvākyamabravīt ।।6.60.4।।


saḥrāvaṇaḥ Ravana, kāñcanamayam golden, divyam wonderful, paramāsanam magnificent, āśritya seated, rakṣāṅsi at Rakshasas, viprēkṣamāṇaḥ gazing at, vākyam words, abravīt spoke.

Ravana seated on the wonderful golden magnificent throne gazing at Rakshasas spoke these words.
sarvaṅtatkhalumēmōghaṅyattaptaṅparamaṅtapaḥ .

yatsamānōmahēndrēṇamānuṣēṇāsmirjitaḥ ।।6.60.5।।


ramam Rama, yat that which, tapaḥ penance, taptam asceticism, mē my, tat sarvam all that, mōghaṅkhalu purposeless, yat that which, mahēndrēṇa by Mahendra, samānaḥ equal to, mānuṣēṇa human, irjitaḥ defeated.

" All the penance which I have done, and the asceticism practised by me equal to Mahendra has become purposeless and defeated."
idaṅtadbrahmaṇōghōraṅvākyaṅmāmabhyupasthitam .

mānuṣēbhyōvijānīhibhayaṅtvamititattathā ।।6.60.6।।


tvam you, mānuṣēbhyaḥ from humans, bhayam fear, vijānīhi coming to be true, iti thus, brahmaṇaḥ Brahma, idam these, ghōram dreadful, vākyam words, mām to me, upasthitam warning given, tat that, tathā like that.

The dreadful words of Brahma spoken to me" know that danger from humans is coming to be true.
dēvadānavagandharvairyakṣarākṣasapannagaiḥ .

avadhyatvaṅmayāprāptaṅmānuṣēbhyōnayācitam ।।6.60.7।।


dēvadānavagandharvaiḥ Devas, Danavas and Gandharvas, yakṣarākṣasapannagaiḥ Yakshas, Rakshasas and serpents, avadhyatvam not to be killed, mayā by me, prāptam sought, mānuṣēbhyaḥ from humans, nayācitam not asked for.

"I sought protection from Devas, Danavas, Gandharvas, Rakshasas and serpents but not asked for protection from humans."
viditaṅmānuṣaṅmanyērāmaṅdaśarathātmajam .

ikṣvākukulajātēnaanaraṇyēnayatpurā ।।6.60.8।।

utpatsyatēhimadvaṅśēpuruṣōrākṣasādhanu .

yastvāṅsaputraṅsāmātyaṅsabalaṅsāśvasārathim ।।6.60.9।।

nihaniṣyatisaṅgrāmētvāṅkulādhama durmatē .


rākṣasādhama lowest Rakshasa, kulādhama vilest of the clan, durmatē evil minded, yaḥ he who, saputram your sons, sāmātyam altogether, sabalam all army, sāśvasārathim your horses and charioteers, tvām you, saṅgrāmē in war, nihaniṣyati will perish, puruṣaḥ man, madvaṅśē in my race, utpatsyatēhi will be born, purā in the past, ikṣvākukalajātēna in the race of Ikshvaku, anaraṇyēnayat like that by Anaranya, viditam made known, daśarathātmajam Dasaratha's son, rāmam Rama, mānuṣam human, manyē I think.

"I think that Dasaratha's son Rama, a human being is about whom king Anaranya born in Ikshvaku race, who cursed me earlier saying, 'In my race will be born a man who will kill you in war, with your sons, your horses, charioteers, all army, O evil minded lowest of Rakshasas, and the vilest of Rakshasas."
śaptō.haṅvēdavatyācayadāsādharṣitāpurā ।।6.60.10।।

sēyaṅsītāmahābhāgājātājanakanandinī .


yadā that way, purā in the past, sā she, dharṣitā violated, vēdavatyā by Vedavathi, aham I am, śaptaḥ cursed, sā she, iyam thus, mahābhāgā highly blessed, janakanandinī loved by Janaka, sītā Sita, jātā born.

"In the past, I violated Vedavathi and got cursed by her. The same Woman born as Sita, the daughter of Janaka, is a highly blessed one."
umānandīśvaraścāpirambhāvaruṇakanyakā ।।6.60.11।।

yathōktāstanmayāprāptaṅnamithyāṛṣibhāṣitam

umā Uma, nandīśvaraścāpi Nandeeswara (monkey faced attendant of Siva) also, rambha Rambha, varuṇakanyakā daughter of Varuna, yathā like that, uktāḥ spoken, tat that, mayā by me, prāptam attained, ṛṣibhāṣitam spoken by those endowed with vision, mithyā untrue, na not.

"Uma, Nandeeswara, Rambha and daughter of Varuna have cursed me like that and the prediction of those endowed with vision has been attained by me."
ētadēvābhyupāgamyayatnaṅkartumahārhatha ।।6.60.12।।

rākṣasāścāpitiṣṭhantucaryāgōpuramūrthasu .


ētat ēva all this, abhyupāgamya knowing, iha here, yatnam make effort, kartum will do, arhatha ought to, rākṣasāścāpi even Rakshasas, caryāgōpuramūrdhasu strive to succeed positioned at the top of gates, tiṣṭhantu positioned.

"Knowing all this, make effort doing what ought to be done and let the Rakshasas strive to succeed positioned on top of the gates."
sacāpratimagāmbhīryōdēvadānavadarpahā ।।6.60.13।।

brahmaśāpābhibhūtastukumbhakarṇōvibōdhyatām .


apratimagāmbhīryaḥ unparalleled in profundity, dēvadānavadarpahāḥ capable of crushing the vanity of Devas and Danavas, brahmaśāpābhibhūtaḥ cursed by Brahma, saḥ he, kumbhakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, vibōdhyatām be aroused.

"Let Kumbhakarna of unparalleled profundity, capable of crushing Devas and Danavas, who is in slumber owing to the curse of Brahma be awakened."
saparājitamātmānaṅprahastaṅcaniṣūditam ।।6.60.14।।

jñātvārakṣōbalaṅbhīmamādidēśamahābalaḥ .


mahābalaḥ endowed with mighty prowess, saḥ he, parājitam defeated, ātmānam himself, prahastam Prahastha, niṣūditam killed, bhīmam terrific, balam strength, ādidēśa be instructed.

"Let him be instructed that Prahastha endowed with mighty prowess has been defeated and killed."
dvārēṣuyatnaḥkriyatāṅprākāraścādhiruhyatām ।।6.60.15।।

nidrāvaśasamāviṣṭaḥkumbhakarṇōvibōdyatām .


dvārēṣu gates, yatnaḥ attempt, kriyatām carryout, prākāraśca defensive walls, adhiruhyatām climbing up, nidrāvavasamāviṣṭaḥ fully awakened from sleep, kumbhakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, vibōdhyatām aroused.

"Let the Rakshasas climb up the defensive walls and attempt to guard. Also let Kumbhakarna be aroused from sleep."
sukhaṅsvapitiniścintaḥkālōpahatacētanaḥ ।।6.60.16।।

navaṣaṭ saptacāṣṭaucamāsān svapitirākṣasaḥ .


rākṣasaḥ Rakshasa, kālōpahatacētanaḥ lost consciousness for long, niścintaḥ slumbering at ease, nava nine, sapta seven, ṣaṭ six, aṣṭau eight ca and, māsān months, sukham happily, svapiti sleeping.

"The Rakshasa, Kumbhakarna, lost consciousness is slumbering at ease and has been sleeping for six to nine months happily."
mantrayitvāprasuptō.yamitastunavamē.hani ।।6.60.17।।

taṅtubōdhayatakṣipraṅkumbhakarṇaṅmahābalam .


mantrayitvā deliberating like this, ayam I am, itaḥ here, navamē nine, ahani day and night, prasuptaḥ sleeping, mahābalam great strength, taṅkumbakurṇam that Kumbhakarna, kṣipram quickly, bōdhayata may be informed

"Deliberating like this with me, Kumbhakarna is sleeping for the ninth day from now. He may be quickly informed (aroused)."
satusaṅ khyēmahābāhuḥkakudassarvarakṣasām ।।6.60.18।।

vānarān rājaputraucakṣipramēvahaniṣyati

sarvarakṣasām among the Rakshasas, kakudam foremost, mahābāhuḥtu endowed with broad shoulders, saḥ he, saṅ khyē many, vānarān Vanaras, rājaputrauca princes, kṣipramēva instantly, haniṣyati will crush them.

"Endowed with broad shoulders, he is the foremost of Rakshasas. He will crush many Vanaras immediately and the two princes (Rama and Lakshmana)."
ēṣaḥkētuḥparaṅsaṅ khyēmukhyōvaisarvarakṣasām ।।6.60.19।।

kumbhakarṇaḥsadāśētēmūḍhōgrāmyasukhērataḥ .


sarvarakṣasām all Rakshasas, mukhyaḥ chief, saṅ khyē enumerated, param distinguished, kētuḥ foremost, ēṣaḥ in that way kumbhakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, mūḍhaḥ insensate, grāmyasukhē in indecent delight in the form of sleep, rataḥ remains, sadā always, śētē addicted.

"He, (Kumbhakarna) is the foremost chief among all Rakshasas enumerated. In that way he is distinguished. But he is insensate, remains addicted always to indecent delight in the form of sleep."
rāmēṇahinirastasyasaṅgrāmē.smin sudāruṇē ।।6.60.20।।

bhaviṣyatinamēśōkaḥkumbhakarṇēvibōdhitē .


kumbhakarṇē Kumbhakarna, vibōdhitē aroused, sudāruṇē very dreadful, asmin this, saṅgrāmē combat, rāmēṇa with Rama, hinirastasya to impel, mē to me, śōkaḥ sad, nabhaviṣyati not take place.

" After Kumbhakarna is fully aroused, my sorrow impelled in this terrible comb at with Rama will not be there."
kiṅkariṣyāmyahaṅtēnaśakratulyabalēnahi ।।6.60.21।।

īdṛśēvyasanēghōrēyōnasāhyāyakalpatē .


yaḥ he who, īdṛśē in such, ghōrē dreadful, vyasanē weakness, sāhyāya assistance, nakalpatē not able to, śakratulyabalēna equal to Indra in his strength, tēna by that, aham I am, kim what, kariṣyāmi can I do.

"What can I do if he does not assist me in such a dreadful comb at because of his weakness, even though he is equal to Indra in strength"
tētutadvacanaṅśrutvārākṣasēndrasyarākṣasāḥ ।।6.60.22।।

jagmuḥparamasambhrāntāḥkumbhakarṇanivēśanam .


tē they, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasa, rākṣasēndrasya at king of Rakshasas, tat vākyam those words, śrutvā on listening, paramasambhrāntāḥ highly puzzled, kumbhakarṇanivēśanam Kumbhakarna's abode, jagmuḥ went.

On listening to the Rakshasa king's words, the Rakshasas went to the abode of Kumbhakarna highly puzzled.
tāṅpraviśyamahādvāraṅsarvatōyōjanāyatām ।।6.60.23।।

kumbhakarṇaguhāṅramyāṅsarvagandhapravāhinīm .

kumbhakarṇasyaniḥśvāsādavadhūtāmahābalāḥ ।।6.60.24।।

pratiṣṭhamānāḥkṛcchrēṇayatnātpraviviśurguhām .


mahādvārām huge gates, sarvataḥ all over, yōjanāyutām one yojana on all sides, sarvagandhapravāhinīm with all fragrant flowers food etc, ramyām beautiful, kumbhakarṇaguhām residence of Kumbhakarna, praviśya entered, kumbhakarṇasya Kumbhakarna's, niḥśvāsāt by the breath, avadhūtāḥ attendants, mahābalāḥ of mighty strength, kṛcchrēṇa pushed out, pratiṣṭhamānāḥ pushed their way, yatnāt attempt, guhām residence, praviviśuḥ entered.

The Rakshasas entered the beautiful residence of Kumbhakarna which was one yojana on all sides with huge gates, taking fragrant garlands and foods (to wake up Kumbhakarna) from where they were pushed out by the breath of Kumbhakarna. The Rakshasas endowed with mighty strength pushed their way into the residence of Kumbhakarna and entered.
tāṅpraviśyaguhāṅramyāṅśubhāṅkāñcanakuṭṭimām ।।6.60.25।।

dadṛśurnairṛtavyāghraṅśayānaṅbhīmavidarśanam .


nairṛtavyāghraṅ tigers among Rakshasas, śubhām kāñcanakuṭṭimām paved with gold and precious stones, ramyām delightful, tāṅguhām home, pravivya entered, śayānam sleeping, bhīmavidarśanam of terrible prowess, dadṛśuḥ saw.

The tigers among Rakshasas entered the residence paved with gold and precious stones, a delightful one and saw sleeping Kumbhakarna of great prowess.
tētutaṅvikṛtaṅsuptaṅvikīrṇamivaparvatam ।।6.60.26।।

kumbhakarṇaṅmahānidraṅsahitāḥpratyabōdhayan .


tē those, sahitāḥ collected together, vikṛtam of unnatural form, suptam sleeping on bed, vikīrṇam scattered, parvatam iva mountain like, mahānidram in dead sleep, kumbhakarṇam Kumbhakarna, pratyabōdhayan to awaken.

Those Rakshasas collected together started to awaken Kumbhakarna, who was like a scattered mountain in dead sleep.
ūrdhvarōmāñcitatanuṅśvasantamivapannagam .

bhrāmayantam nviśśvasaiḥśayānam bhīmavidarśamam ।।6.60.27।।

bhīmanāsāpuṭaṅtaṅtupātālōvipulānanam .

śayanēnyastasarvāṅgaṅmēdōrudhiragandhinam ।।6.60.28।।

kāñcanāṅgadanaddhāṅgaṅkirīṭinamarindamam .

dadṛśurnairṛtavyāghraṅkumbhakarṇamarindamam ।।6.60.29।।


ūrdhvarōmāñcitatanum body covered with bristling hair, pannagamiva like a serpent, śvasantam breathing, nviśśvasaiḥ hissing heavily, bhrāmayantam turning back, śayānam sleeping, bhīmavidarśamam of terrible, nīmanāsāpuṭam horrible nostrils, pātālavipulānanam face as vast as underworld, vayanē, nyastasarvāṅgam all limbs stretched out, mēdōrudhiragandhinam emitting smell of fat and blood, kāñcanāṅgadanaddhāṅgam arms adorned with gold bracelets, kirīṭinam wearing a crown, arindamam tamer of foes, nairṛtavyāghram tiger of south-west, arimardhanam destroyer of enemies, taṅkumbhakarṇam that Kumbhakarna, dadṛśuḥ saw.

The Rakshasas saw Kumbhakarna, destroyer of enemies, the tiger of the south-west, tamer of foes, with his body fully covered with bristling hair, breathing heavily like a serpent with horrible nostrils, turning back with face/mouth as vast as underworld all limbs stretched out, emitting smell of fat and blood, arms adorned with gold bracelets, wearing a crown, and sleeping.
tataścakrurmahātmānaṅkumbhakarṇāgratastadācāgrataḥ ।।6.60.30।।

māṅsānāṅmērusaṅkāśaṅrāśiṅparamatarpaṇam .


tataḥ thereafter, mahātmānaḥ great soul, kumbhakarṇasya Kumbhakarna's, agrataḥ before, māṅsānām meat, mērusaṅkāśam of the size of Meru mountain, paramatarpaṇam for pleasing immensely, rāśim heap, cakruḥ placed.

Thereafter the Rakshasas placed a heap of me at the size of Meru Mountain to please him immensely.
mṛgāṇāṅmahiṣāṇāṅcavarāhāṇāṅcasañcayān ।।6.60.31।।

cakrurnairṛtaśārdūlārāśimannasyacādbhutam .


nairṛtaśārdūlāḥ tiger of southwest, mṛgāṇām antelopes, mahiṣāṇāṅca buffaloes also, varāhāṇāṅca swine also, sañcayān in heaps, annasya food, adbhutam marvellous, rāśiṅca a mass, cakruḥ placed.

The tigers of the south west Rakshasas piled up a mass of marvellous food like the me at of buffaloes, swine, and antelopes.
tataśśōṇitakumbhāṅścamadyānivividhānica ।।6.60.32।।

purastātkumbhakarṇasyacakrustridaśaśatravaḥ .


tataḥ then, tridaśatravaḥ thirty three kinds, śōṇitakumbhāṅśca pails of blood, vividhāni variety, madyāni wines, kumbhakarṇasya at Kumbhakarna, purastāt in front of, cakruḥ placed.

Then the Rakshasas placed thirty three kinds of meat, pails of blood, and a variety of wines in front of Kumbhakarna.
lilipuścaparārdhyēnacandanēnaparantapam ।।6.60.33।।

divyairāśvāsayāmāmāsurmālyairgandhaissugandhibhiḥ .


parārdhyēna highly fragrant, candanēna sandal paste, parantapam super, lilipuḥ to take in, divyaiḥ wonderful, sugandhibhiḥ fragrant, mālyaiḥ garland s, gandaiḥca and perfumes, āśvāsayāmāsuḥ daubed him.

Again, they daubed Kumbhakarna with highly fragrant sandal paste to take in fragrance, with wonderful garlands and perfumes.
dhūpaṅsugandhāṅścasasṛjustuṣṭavuścaparantatam ।।6.60.34।।

jaladāivacānēduryātudhānāstatastataḥ .


yātudhānāḥ incense, dhūpam burnt, gandhām ca sandal, sasṛjuḥ to send forth, parantapam supreme, tuṣṭavuśca to gratify, tatastataḥ here and there, jaladāḥiva like clouds, ānēduḥca thundered.

They also burnt incense, sandal to send forth fragrance to gratify Kumbhakarna and thundered like clouds here and there.
śaṅkhāṅnāpūrayāmāsuśśaśāṅkasadṛśaprabhān ।।6.60.35।।

tumulaṅyugapacchāpivinēduścāpyamarṣitāḥ .


śaśāṅkasadṛśaprabhān like moon and shining brightly, śaṅkhān conchs, āpūrayāmāsuḥ blew, amarṣitāḥ intolerant, yugapat simultaneously, tumulam loudly, vinēduḥcāpi raised noise.

They blew moon size conches shining brightly. Intolerant Rakshasas raised loud noise simultaneously.
nēdurāsphōṭayāmāsuścikṣipustēniśācarāḥ ।।6.60.36।।

kumbhakarṇavibōdhārthaṅcakrustēvipulaṅsvanam .


tēniśācarāḥ those night rangers, nēduḥ drawing near, asphōṭayāmāsuḥ pushed the limbs, cikṣipuḥ clapped, kumbhakarṇavibōdhārtham to make Kumbhakarna wake up, vipulam loud, svanam sound, cakruḥ did.

Those night rangers drawing the limbs of Kumbhakarna pushed his arms, clapping loudly to awaken him making a sound.
saśaṅkhabhērīpaṇavapraṇādamāsphōṭitakṣēvaḷitasiṅhanādam .

diśōdravantastridivaṅkīrantaḥśrutvāvihaṅgāḥsahasānipētuḥ ।।6.60.37।।


vihaṅgāḥ birds, saśaṅkhabhērīpaṇavapraṇādam by the sound of the conchs, āsphōṭitakṣēvaḷitasiṅhanādam clapping of arms, thundering and lion roar, śrutvā hearing, diśaḥ direction, dravantaḥ playing, tridivam in the sky, kīrantaḥ scattered, sahasā forcibly, nipētuḥ fell down.

On hearing the conchs, and of the clapping of arms, and thundering like a lion, the birds playing in the sky got scattered and fell.
yadābhṛśaṅtairninadairmahātmānakumbakarṇōbubudhēprasuptaḥ .

tatōmusuṇṭhīrmusalānisarvērakṣōgaṇāstējagṛhurgadāśca ।।6.60.38।।


prasuptaḥ sleeping, mahātmā great soul, kumbhakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, bhṛśam angry, taiḥ they, ninadaiḥ roared, yadā that way, nabubudhē not awakened, tataḥ then sarvē all, rakṣōgaṇāḥ Rakshasas, tam him, musuṇṭhīḥ mallets, musalāni bars, gadāśca and maces, jagṛhuḥ hit.

Kumbhakarna sleeping like that, could not be awakened. Angry Rakshasas roared and hit him with mallets and maces.
taṅśailaśṛṅgairmusalairgadābhirvṛkṣaistarairmudgaramuṣṭibhiśca .

sukhaprasuptaṅbhuvikumbhakarṇaṅrakṣāṅsyudagrāṇitadānijaghnuḥ ।।6.60.39।।


tadā then, udagrāṇi exited, rakṣāṅsi Rakshasas, bhuvi on the ground, sukhaprasuptam happily sleeping, taṅkumbhakarṇam that Kumbhakarna, śailaśṛṅgaiḥ with rocks and trees, musalaiḥ bars, gadābhiḥ maces, mudgaramuṣṭibhiḥca with fists, nijaghnuḥ not got up.

Then the excited Rakshasas could not wake up Kumbhakarna happily sleeping on the ground in spite of hitting with rocks and trees and their fists.
tasyaniḥśvāsavātēnakumbhakarṇasyarakṣasaḥ .

rākṣasābalavantō.pisthātunāśaknuvanpuraḥ ।।6.60.40।।


rakṣasaḥ Rakshasa, tasyakumbhakarṇasya that Kumbhakarna's, niḥśvāsavātēna by the breathing out, balavantaḥapi with such force, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, puraḥ earlier, sdātum to stand, naśaknuvan not possible.

Unable to bear the force of the breathing out of Kumbhakarna, the Rakshasas could not stand.
tataḥparihitāgāḍhaṅrākṣasābhīmavikramāḥ .

mṛdaṅgapaṇavān bhērīśśaṅkhakumbhagaṇāṅstathā ।।6.60.41।।


tataḥ that, bhīmavikramaḥ of terrible valour, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasa, gāḍham resorted to, parihitāḥ abandoned, mṛdaṅgapaṇavān drums and tom toms, bhērīḥ drums, tathā that way, śaṅkhakumbhagaṇān pails of clay.

The Rakshasas of terrible valour resorted to abandoned drums and tom toms that way and pails of clay.
daśarākṣasasāhasraṅyugapatparyavārayan .

nīlāñjanacayākāraṅtētutaṅpratyabōdhayan ।।6.60.42।।

abhighnantōnadantaścanaivasaṅvividētusaḥ .


daśarākṣasasāhasram ten thousand Rakshasas, yugapat all together simultaneously, paryavārayan surrounded, tētu but he, nīlāñjanacayākāram like a mass of antimony, tam him, abhighnantaḥ striking, nadantaḥnaiva even made loud noise, tam him, pratyabōdhayan tried to wake, bōdhayan shouted, saḥ he, saṅvividē not responded.

Ten thousand Rakshasas surrounded him all at once like a mass of antimony striking him and even made a loud noise. But he never responded.
yadācainaṅnaśēkustēpratibōdhayituṅtadā ।।6.60.43।।

tatōgurutaraṅyatnaṅdāruṇaṅsamupākraman .


tē they, yadā that way, ēnam in that way, pratibōdhayitum called him again and again, naśēkuḥ not got up, tadā then, tataḥ thereafter, gurutaram difficult, dāruṇam dreadful, yatnam effort, samupākraman approaching.

They called him again and again, but he never got up. Then they made a difficult and dreadful effort approaching him.
āśvānuṣṭrān kharannāgān jaghnurdaṇḍakaśāṅkuśaiḥ ।।6.60.44।।

bhērīśaṅkhamṛdaṅgāṅścasarvaprāṇairavādayan .


āśvān horses, uṣṭrān camels, kharān donkeys, nāgān elephants, daṇḍakaśāṅkuśaiḥ with staffs whips and goads, ājaghnuḥ urged, bhērīśaṅkhamṛdaṅgān ca kettle drums, conchs, clay tom toms, sarvaprāṇaiḥ with all their might, avādayan pounded on him.

They urged horses, elephants, camels, and donkeys to pounce on him, whipping with staff, whips, and goads.
nijaghnuścāsyagātrāṇimahākāṣṭhakaṅkaraiḥ ।।6.60.45।।

mudgarairmusalaiścāpisarvaprāṇasamudyataiḥ .


asya his, gātrāṇi voice, māhākāṣṭhakaṅkaraiḥ with heavy logs of wood, sarvaprāṇasamudyataiḥ with all their strength, musalaiścāpi with mallets, nijaghnuḥ not wake up.

The city of Lanka including the woods was filled with that noise. They pushed him with mallets with all their strength, but he did not wake up.
tēnanādēvamahatālaṅkāsamabhipūritā ।।6.60.46।।

saparvatavanāsarvāsō.pinaivaprabudhyatē .


mahatā great, tēnanādēna by that noise, saparvatavanā all mountains, sarvā all, laṅkā Lanka, samabhipūritā filled with, saḥapi even then, naivaprabudhyatē did not wake up.

All Lanka and mountains were filled by the great noise made by the Rakshasas. Even then Kumbhakarna did not wake up.
tatassahasraṅbhērīṇāṅyugasatsamahanyata ।।6.60.47।।

mṛṣṭakāñcanakōṇānāmāsaktānāṅsamantataḥ .


tataḥ then, mṛṣṭakāñcanakōṇānām polished gold sticks, samantataḥ everywhere,āsaktānām continuously, bhērīṇām drums, sahasram thousand, samahanyata collected.

Then was collected a thousand drums and beaten with polished gold sticks on all sides continuously.
ēvamapyantidristuyadānaivaprabudhyata ।।6.60.48।।

śāpasyavaśamāpannastataḥkruddhāniśācarāḥ .


ēvamapi like that, śāsasya because of curse, vaśam under the spell of, āpannaḥ wrap, antidriḥ, yadā like that, naivaprabudhyatē not wakened, tataḥ then, niśācarāḥ Rakshasas, kruddhāḥ enraged.

Wrapped in sleep like that because of the spell of the curse, he had not wakened. The Rakshasas got enraged.
mahākrōdhasamāviṣṭāssarvēbhīmaparākramāḥ ।।6.60.49।।

tadrakṣōbōdhayiṣyantaścakruranyēparākramam .


bhīmaparākramāḥ endowed with mighty valour, sarvē all, mahākrōdhasamāviṣṭāḥ, anyē others, tat that, rakṣaḥ guards, bōdhayiṣyantaḥ rousing, parākramam prowess, cakruḥ started.

All the Rakshasas endowed with mighty prowess became enraged and others started to arouse with all their strength.
anyēbhērīssamājaghnuranyēcakrurmahāsvanam ।।6.60.50।।

kēśānanyēpralulupuḥkarṇāvanyēdaśantica .


anyē others, bhērīḥ drums, samājaghnuḥ beat, anyē some others, mahāsvanam shouted at the pitch of their voice, cakruḥ started, anyē some others, kēśān hair, pralulupuḥ pulled, anyē some, karṇau ears, daśantica bit.

While some were beating the drums, some shouted at the pitch of their voice, some started pulling his hair and some bit his ears.
udakumbaśatānyanyēsamasiñcantakarṇayōḥ ।।6.60.51।।

nakumbhakarṇaḥpaspandēmahānidrāvaśaṅgataḥ .


anyē others, udakumbhaśatāni hundreds of pails of water, karṇayōḥ in the ears, samasiñcanta distressed, mahānidrāvaśaṅgataḥ under the spell of deep sleep, kumbhakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, napaspandē not wake up.

anyēcabalinastasyakūṭamudgarapāṇayaḥ ।।6.60.52।।

mūrdhnivakṣasigātrēṣupātan kūṭamudgarān .

rajjubandhanabaddhābhiḥ fastened with cords, śataghnībhiḥ Satagnhi, sarvaśaḥ all over, vadhyamānaḥ fastened with, mahākāyaḥ the huge body, rākṣasaḥ Rakshasa, naprābudhyata not awakened.

Some struck with sataghni (mace) all over his huge body fastened with cords.
vāraṇānāṅsahasraṅcaśarīrē.syapradhāvitam ।।6.60.54।।

kumbakarṇastadābud dhvāsparśaṅparamabudhyata .


vāraṇānām elephants, sahasram a thousand, asya his, śarīrē body, pradhāvitam walk over, tadā then, kumbakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, bud dhvā felt, sparśaṅparam felt the touch, abudhyata not understand.

A thousand elephants were made to walk over his body. Then Kumbhakarna felt the touch but did not understand.
sapātyamānairgiriśṛṅgavṛkṣairacintayaṅstānvipulān prahārān .

nidrākṣyāt kṣudbhayapīḍitaścavijṛmbhamāṇassahasōtpapāpa ।।6.60.55।।


saḥ he, pātyamānaiḥ descending, giriśṛṅgavṛkṣaiḥ mountain peaks, trees, tān sensation, vipulān huge, prahārān hitting, acintayan not knowing, nidrākṣyāt getting out of sleep, kṣudbhayapīḍitaśca tormented by hunger, vijṛmbhamāṇaḥ sprang up, sahasā suddenly, utpapāta awakened.

Tormented by hunger and hit by mountain peaks and huge trees he sprang up suddenly descended and awakened.
sanāgabhōgācalaśṛṅgakalpauvikṣipyabāhūgiraśṛṅgasārau .

nivṛtyavaktraṅvaḍavāmukhābhaṅniśācarō.sauvikṛtaṅjajṛmbhē ।।6.60.56।।


saḥ he, asau devoid of beauty, niśācaraḥ Rakshasas, nāgabhōgācalaśṛṅgakṛtau like the coils of cobra, giriśṛṅgasārau hard as mountain tops, bāhū limbs, vikṣipya thrown about, vaḍavāmukhābham like submarine fire, vaktram mouth, vikṛtam unnatural, jajṛmbhē yawned.

Kumbhakarna, devoid of any beauty threw out his limbs which were like the coils of cobra and as hard as mountain tops, his mouth was unnatural like a submarine fire as he yawned.
tasyajājṛmbhamāṇasyavaktraṅpātālasannibham .

dadṛśēmēruśṛṅgāgrēdivākaraivōditaḥ ।।6.60.57।।


jājṛmbhamāṇasya as he yawned, tasya his, pātālasannibham resembling the underworld, vaktram mouth, mēruśṛṅgāgrē top of the Meru mountain, uditaḥ risen over, divākaraḥiva like the sun, dadṛśē appeared.

As he yawned his mouth resembling the underworld, it was like the Sun rose over the top of Mount Meru.
sajṛmbhamāṇō.tibalaḥpraddhōniśācaraḥ .

niḥśvāsaścāsyasañjajñēparvatādivamārutaḥ ।।6.60.58।।


atibalaḥ very strong, saḥniśācaraḥ that night ranger, jṛmbhamāṇaḥ as he yawned continuously, prabuddhaḥ awakened, parvatāt from the mountain, mārutaḥ wind iva like, asya his, niḥśvāsaḥ breath sañjajñē blowing.

As the mighty night ranger awakened and yawned continuously his breath was like wind blowing from the mountain.
rūpamuttiṣṭhatastasyakumbhakarṇasyatadbabhau .

tapāntēsabalākasyamēghasyēvavivarṣataḥ ।।6.60.59।।


uttiṣṭhataḥ as he woke up, kumbhakarṇasya Kumbhakarna's, tat rūpam form, yugāntē universal dissolution, sabalākasya twilight, sarvabhūtāni all beings, mēghasyēva like cloud, vivarṣitaḥ about to rain, babhau appeared.

As Kumbhakarna woke up he appeared like the time spirit at the time of dissolution of the universe like a rainy cloud at twilight as if seeking to consume all beings.
tasyadīptāgnisadṛśēvidyutsadṛśavarcasī .

dadṛśātēmahānētrēdīptāvivamahāgrahau ।।6.60.60।।


tasyadīptāgnisadṛśē like blazing fire, vidyutsadṛśavarcasī dazzling like lightning, tasyamahānētrē his huge eyes, dīptau glowing, mahāgrahauiva like huge planets, dadṛśātē looked.

His huge eyes were like blazing fire dazzling like lightning glowing like two huge planets.
tatastvadarśayan sarvānbhakṣyāṅścavividhān bahūn .

varāhānmahiṣāṅścaivababhakṣasamahābalaḥ ।।6.60.61।।


tataḥ thereafter, vividhān several, bahūn many, sarvān all kinds, bhakṣyān ca food items, varāhān hogs, mahiṣāṅścaiva buffaloes also, adarśayan having seen, saḥ he, babhakṣa ate.

Thereafter having seen several kinds of food items of hogs, buffaloes he ate them.
ādadunbhukṣitōmāṅsaṅśōṇitaṅtṛṣitaḥpiban .

mēdaḥkumbhāṅścamadyāṅścapapauśakraripustadā ।।6.60.62।।


tadā then, bubhukṣitaḥ after eating, śakraripuḥ enemy of Indra, māṅsam meat, ādadun thirsty, tṛṣitaḥ being thirsty, śōṇitam blood, piban drank, mēdaḥkumbhāśca pails of fat, madyāṅśca wine, papau drank.

After eating the meat and feeling thirsty, the enemy of Indra drank blood, pails of fat and wine.
tatastṛptaitijñātvāsamutpēturniśācarāḥ .

śirōbhiścapraṇamyainaṅsarvataḥparyavārayan ।।6.60.63।।


tataḥ there upon, niśācarāḥ night ranger, tṛptaḥiti satisfied in that way, jñātvā realizing, samutpētuḥ got up, ēnam all of them, śirōbhiḥ heads bent down, praṇamya greeting, sarvataḥ all, paryavārayan surrounded.

There upon the night rangers realizing that he got up, came before him, and greeted him with heads bent down.
nidrāviśadanētrastukaluṣīkṛtalōcanaḥ .

cārayan sarvatōdṛṣṭiṅtān dadarśaniśācarān ।।6.60.64।।


nidrāviśadanētrastu, with sleepy eyes, kaluṣīkṛtalōcanaḥ casting his glance, sarvataḥ all over, dṛṣṭim gaze, cārayan rangers, tān extended, niśācarān night rangers, dadarśa looked at.

sasarvān sāntvayāmāsanairṛtān nairṛtarṣabhaḥ .

bōdhanādvismitaścāpirākṣasānidamabravīt ।।6.60.65।।

kimarthamahamādṛtyabhavadbhiḥpratibōdhitaḥ .

kacchitsukuśalaṅrājñōbhayaṅvānēṣanakim ।।6.60.66।।


aham I am, bhavadbhiḥ by you, ādṛtya taken effort, kimartham What for, pratibōdhitaḥ made known, rājñaḥ king, sukuśalaṅkacchit hope he is fine, ēṣa any, kim why, bhayam fear of danger, na not.

"What have you done to wake me Hope King is fine and has no fear of danger"
athavādhruvamanyēbhyōbhayaṅparamupasthitam .

yadarthamēvatvaritairbhavadbhiḥpratibōdhitaḥ ।।6.60.67।।

dārayiṣyēmahēndraṅvāśātayiṣyētathānalam ।।6.60.68।।


adya devour, aham I will, rākṣasarājasya Rakshasa king's, bhayam fear, utpāṭayāmi eradicate, mahēndram Mahendra, dārayiṣyē destroy, tathā like that, analam fire, śātayiṣyē alleviate

tadākhyātārthatattvēnamatprabōdhanakāraṇam ।।6.60.69।।


suptam sleeping, mām me, alpakāraṇē for small reason, nabōdhayiṣyatihi awaken, tat that, matprabōdhanakāraṇam the reason for waking me, arthatattvēna truly, guruḥ guru, akhyāta tell me.

yūpākṣaḥsacivōrājñaḥkṛtāñjalirabhāṣata ।।6.60.70।।

mānuṣānnōbhayaṅrājaṅstumulaṅsamprabādhatē ।।6.60.71।।

nadaityadānavēbhyōvābhayamastihitādṛśam .

yādṛśaṅmānuṣaṅrājan bhayamasmānupasthitam ।।6.60.72।।


rājan king, mānuṣam human, yādṛśam this kind, bhayam danger, asmān for us, upasthitam has arisen, tādṛśam the kind of, bhayam fear, daityadānavēbhyōvā either from Daityas or Danavas, nāstihi not there.

"O King! This kind of fear from humans has not arisen for us either from Daityas or Danavas."
vānaraiḥparvatākārairlaṅkēyaṅparivāritā .

sītāharaṇasantaptādrāmānnastumulaṅbhayam ।।6.60.73।।


iyaṅlaṅkā this Lanka, parvatākāraiḥ mountain like form, vānaraiḥ Vanaras, parivāritā accompanied by, sītāharaṇasantaptāt by abduction of Sita, rāmāt from Rama, naḥ not, tumulam little, bhayam fear.

This Lanka is seized by a mountain like army of Vanaras. By the abduction of Sita, there is little fear from Rama.
ēkēnavānarēṇēyaṅpūrvaṅdagdhāmahāpurī .

kumārōnihataścākṣassānuyātraḥsakuñjaraḥ ।।6.60.74।।


ēkēna alone, vānarēṇa by Vanara, pūrvam earlier, iyam this, mahāpurī great city, dagdhā burnt, sānuyātraḥ followers, sakuñjaraḥ his elephants, kumāraḥ son akṣaḥca Aksha, nihataḥ killed.

"Earlier this great city was burnt by a single Vanara who killed Prince Aksha, and his elephants and followers."
svayaṅrakṣōdhipaścāpipaulastyōdēvakaṇṭakaḥ .

mṛtētisaṅyugēmuktōrāmēṇādityatējasā ।।6.60.75।।

yūpākṣa Yupaksha, adyaiva now itself, sarvam all, harisainyam Vanara army, salakṣmaṇam along with Lakshmana, rāghavaṅca and Raghava, raṇē in war, jitvā conquering, tataḥ then, rāvaṇam Ravana, drakṣyāmi will see.

"I will conquer now the Vanara army along with Lakshmana and Raghava in war and see Ravana."
rākṣasāṅstarpayiṣyāmiharīṇāṅmāṅsaśōṇitaiḥ .

rāmalakṣmaṇayōścāpisvayaṅpāsyāmiśōṇitam ।।6.60.79।।


harīṇām Vanaras, māṅsaśōṇitaiḥ by flesh and blood, rākṣasān Rakshasas, tarpayiṣyāmi make them contended, rāmalakṣmaṇayōḥ Rama and Lakshmana, śōṇitam blood, svayam I will, pāsyāmi you may see.

"I will satisfy the Rakshasas with the flesh and blood of Rama and Lakshmana. You will see."
tattasyavākyaṅbruvatōniśamyasagarvitaṅrōṣavivṛddhadōṣam .

mahōdarōnairṛtayōdhamukhyaḥkṛtāñjalirvākyamidaṅbabhāṣē ।।6.60.80।।


bruvataḥ replied, tasya his, garvitam proudly, rōṣavivṛddhadōṣam words full of arrogance, tat vākyam his words, niśamya submitted, nairṛtayōdhamukhyaḥ chief of army of Rakshasas, saḥ he, mahōdaraḥ Mahodara, kṛtāñjaliḥ offering salutations, idaṅvākyam these words, babhāṣē spoke.

Hearing the words of the reply of Kumbhakarna, filled with arrogance and pride, Mahodara, chief of the army, submitted with folded hands and said.
rāvaṇasyavacaḥśrutvāguṇadōṣauvimṛśyaca .

paścādapimahābāhō śatrūnyudhivijēṣyasi ।।6.60.81।।


mahābāhō mighty armed, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, vacaḥ words, śrutvā hearing, guṇadōṣau advantages and disadvantages, vimṛśyaca assessing, paścāt api after that, yudhi in war, śatrūn enemy, vijēṣyasi conquer.

suptamutthāpyabhīmākṣaṅbhīmarūpaparākramam .

rākṣasāstvaritājugmardaśagrīnvivēśanam ।।6.60.83।।


rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, bhīmākṣam frightful eyes, bhīmarūpaparākramam of fierce strength, suptam sleeping, utthāpya arousing, tvaritāḥ quickly, daśagrīnvivēśanam abode of ten headed king, jagmuḥ went.

After rousing up Kumbhakarna of frightful eyes and fierce strength from sleep the Rakshasas quickly went to the abode of the ten headed king.
tatōgatvādaśagrīvamāsīnaṅparamāsanē .

ūcurbaddhāñjalipuṭāssarvaēvaniśācarāḥ ।।6.60.84।।


sarvē all, tēniśācarāḥ those night rangers, paramāsanē excellent seat, āsīnam seated, daśagrīvam ten-headed king, anigamya reaching, baddhāñjalipuṭāḥ greeting with folded hands, ūcuḥ spoke.

All those night rangers, approaching the ten-headed king seated on an excellent se at greeted with folded hands and said.
prabuddhō.yaṅkumbhakarṇabhrātātērākṣasēśvara .

kathaṅtatraivaniryātudrakṣyasētamihāgatam ।।6.60.85।।


rākṣasēśvara Rakshasa Lord, tēbhrātā your brother, ayaṅkumbhakarṇaḥ this Kumbhakarna, prabuddhaḥ greetings, tatraiva to you, niryātukatham tell me what to do, iha now, āgatam have come, tam to you, drakṣyasē What order.

"O Rakshasa Lord! Your brother Kumbhakarna has come here. Greetings to you. Tell us what to do."
rāvaṇastvabravīddhṛṣṭōrākṣasāṅstānupasthitān .

draṣṭumēnamihēcchāmiyathānyāyaṅcapūjyatām ।।6.60.86।।


rāvaṇastu Ravana on his part, hṛṣṭaḥ cheerful, upasthitān seated, tān him, rākṣasān Rakshasas, abravīt said, ēvam in that way, iha now, draṣṭum to see, icchāmi desire, yathānyāyam as propriety demands, pūjyatām to honour.

Ravana on his part said this to the Rakshasas feeling cheerful. "Honour him as propriety demands. I wish to see him."

kumbhakarṇamidaṅvākyamūcūrāvaṇacōditāḥ ।।6.60.87।।


rāvaṇacōditāḥ taking leave from Ravana, tē they, sarvē all, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, tathēti returning back, uktvā said, punaḥ again, āgamya approaching, kumbhakarṇam Kumbhakarna, idam these, vākyam words, ūcuḥ said.

All the Rakshasas taking leave from Ravana said this again approaching Kumbhakarna.
draṣṭuṅtvāṅkāṅkṣatērājāsarvarākṣasapuṅgavaḥ .

gamanēkriyatāṅbuddhirbhrātaraṅsampraharṣayaḥ ।।6.60.88।।


sarvarākṣasapuṅgavaḥ all Rakshasa leaders, rājā king, tvām you, draṣṭum to see, kāṅkṣatē desiring, gamanē to start, buddhiḥ make up your mind, kriyatām to depart, bhrātaram brother, sampraharṣaya be pleased.

All the Rakshasa leaders said to Kumbhakarna," the king desires to see you. Start. Make up your mind. Be pleased to depart to your brother."
kumbhakarṇastudurdharṣōbhrāturājñāyaśāsanam .

tathētyuktvāmahāvīryaśśayanādutpapātaha ।।6.60.89।।


durdharṣaḥ formidable, mahāvīryaḥ courageous, kumbhakarṇastu Kumbhakarna also, bhrātuḥ brother, śāsanam order, ājñāya instruction, tathāiti saying yes, uktvā said, śayanāt from the bed, utpapātaha rose up.

Formidable and courageous Kumbhakarna also got up from sleep saying 'yes' and rose up.
prakṣāḷyavadanaṅhṛṣṭassnātaḥparamabhūṣitaḥ .

pipāsustvarayāmāsapānaṅbalasamīraṇam ।।6.60.90।।


hṛṣṭaḥ joyful, vadanam face, prakṣālya washing, snātaḥ bath, paramabhūṣitaḥ decked with best of ornaments, pipāsuḥ thirsty, balasamīraṇam that which increases strength, pānam drink, tvarayāmāsa ordered to get soon.

Joyful Kumbhakarna, washed his face, had a bath and being thirsty ordered a drink that can increase his strength.
tatastētvaritāstatrarākṣasārāvaṇājñayā .

madyakumbhāṅścavividhān kṣipramēvōpahārayan ।।6.60.91।।


tataḥ thereafter, rāvaṇājñayāḥ by the order of Ravana, tvaritāḥ quickly, tē they, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, tatra then, vividhān several, madyakumbhāṅśca pots of wine, kṣipramēva immediately, upahārayan presented.

By the order of Ravana hurriedly they got several kinds of wine in pots.
pītvāghaṭasahasrēdvēgamanāyōpacakramē .

īṣatsamutkaṭōmattastējōbalasamanvitaḥ ।।6.60.92।।


dvē two, ghaṭasahasrē thousand pots, pītvā drinking, īṣat slightly, samutkaṭaḥ excited, mattaḥ inebriated, tējōbalasamanvitaḥ replenished with strength and energy, gamanāya started, upacakramē readied to depart.

(Kumbhakarna) Having drunk two thousand pots of wine, slightly excited and inebriated and replenished with strength and energy was ready to depart.
kumbhakarṇōbabhauhṛṣṭaḥkālāntakayamōpamaḥ .

bhrātussabhavanaṅgacchanrakṣōbalasamanvitaḥ ।।6.60.93।।

kumbhakarṇaḥpadanyāsairakampayatamēndīm .


rakṣōbalasamanvitaḥ surrounded by Rakshasa army, bhrātuḥ brother, bhavanam residence, gacchan going, hṛṣṭaḥ happily, kumbhakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, kālāntakayamōpamaḥ like the Lord of death, babhau looked, kumbhakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, nyāsaiḥ strides, mēndīm earth, akampayata shook.

Kumbhakarna surrounded by Rakshasas going to his brother's abode happily looked like the Lord of death bent on destroying the creation. He took strides which shook the earth.
sarājamārgaṅvapuṣāprakāśayan sahasraraśmirdharaṇīmivāṅśubhiḥ .

jagāmatatrāñjalimālayāvṛtaśśatakraturgēhamivasvayambhuvaḥ ।।6.60.94।।


sahasraraśmiḥ thousand rayed luminary, dharaṇīmiva like the earth, saḥ he, rājamārgam royal path, vapuṣā deity, prakāśayan brightened, tatra there, añjalimālayā garland of joined palms, vṛtaḥ circle, gēham home, śatakratuḥ performed a hundred horse sacrifices, svayambhuva: like the Brahma, jagāma went.

Kumbhakarna went like the thousand rayed Sun illuminating the earth by his splendour brightening the royal path, greeted by a circle of Rakshasas joining palms like Indra who has done a hundred sacrifices went to the abode of self-born Brahma.
taṅrājamārgasthamamitraghātinaṅvanaukasastēsahasābahissthitāḥ .

dṛṣṭavā.pramēyaṅgiriśṛṅgakalpaṅvitatrasustēhariyūthapālāḥ ।।6.60.95।।


amitraghātinam destroyer of enemies, apramēyam immeasurably tall, giriśṛṅgakalpam looked like the mountain peak, rājamārgastham through the royal path, tam him, bahiḥsthitāḥ those who were there, tēvanaukasaḥ those Vanaras, dṛṣṭavā seeing, hariyūthapālāḥsaha including the Vanara leaders, vitatrasuḥ got alarmed.

And then the Vanaras and the leaders of the Vanara army who were present looked at the immeasurably tall form of Kumbhakarna walking through the royal path and got alarmed.
kēciccharaṇyaṅśaraṇaṅsmarāmaṅvrajantikēcid vyathitāḥpatanti .

kēciddhaśasmavyathitāḥpatantikēcidbhayārtābhuviśēratēsma ।।6.60.96।।


kēcit indeed, śaraṇyam refuge, rāmam Rama, śaraṇaṅvrajantisma who was capable of giving shelter, kēcit some, vyathitāḥ became panicked, patantisma fell down, kēcit some, vyathitāḥ panic, diśaḥ directions, patantisma ran, kēcit bhayārtāḥ some out of fear, bhuvi ground, śēratēsma lay down.

Indeed, some took refuge from Rama who could give shelter, some fell down in panic, some went in all directions in panic, and some out of fear lay down on the ground.
tamadriśṛṅgapratimaṅkirīṭinaṅspṛśantamādityamivā.tmatējasā .

vanaukasaḥprēkṣyavivṛddhamadbhutaṅ 3 bhayārdhitādudruvirētatastataḥ ।।6.60.97।।


adriśṛṅgapratimam like the peak of a mountain, kirīṭinam crowned, ātmatējasā self-luminous, ādityam like the Sun, spṛśantamiva as if touching, adbhutam wonderful, vivṛddham grown in size, tam him, vanaukasaḥ Vanaras, prēkṣya seeing, bhayārditāḥ oppressed with fear, tatastataḥ here and there, dudruvirē ran.

Oppressed with fear the Vanaras ran here and there seeing the form of Kumbhakarna that was like the peak of a mountain as if touching the selfluminous Sun, crowned and wonderful, grown in size.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēṣaṣṭitamassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the sixtieth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
