Sloka & Translation

[Vibheeshana speaks to Rama about Kumbhakarna. By the command of Rama, the Vanaras take position at the gates of Lanka.]

ततोरामोमहातेजाधनुरादायवीर्यवान् ।

किरीटिनंमहाकायंकुम्भकर्णंददर्श ह ।।6.61.1।।


ततः then, महातेजाः of extraordinary energy, वीर्यवान् prodigious, रामः Rama, धनुः bow, आदाय taking, किरीटिनम् adorned with crown, महाकायम् of large size, कुम्भकर्णम् Kumbhakarna, ददर्श saw.

On taking up a bow Rama saw Kumbhakarna of extraordinary energy, prodigious, and of large body, adorned with a crown.
तंदृष्टवाराक्षसश्रेष्ठंपर्वताकारदर्शनम् ।

क्रममाणमिवाकाशंपुरानारायणंप्रभुम् ।।6.61.2।।


पर्वताकारदर्शनम् like a mountain in appearance, पुरा earlier, आकाशम् sky, क्रममाणम् taking steps, प्रभुम् Lord, नारायणं Narayana, यथा so also, तंराक्षसश्रेष्ठम् that foremost of Rakshasas, दृष्टव I witnessed.

That foremost of Rakshasas was like a mountain in appearance, it was like Lord Narayana taking steps to the sky earlier.
सतोयाम्बुदसङ्काशंकाञ्चनाङ्गदभूषणम् ।

दृष्टवापुनःप्रदुद्रवावानराणांमहाचमूः ।।6.61.3।।


सतोयाम्बुदसङ्काशम् like rainy cloud with water, काञ्चनाङ्गदभूषणम् decked with gold ornaments, दृष्टवा seeing, वानराणाम् Vanaras, महाचमूः commander in chief, पुनः again, प्रदुद्राव ran.

Seeing the Rakshasa who was like a rainy cloud with water, decked with gold ornaments, the commander in chief of Vanaras ran.
विद्रुतांवाहिनींदृष्टवावर्धमानं च राक्षसम् ।

सविस्मयमिदंरामोविभीषणमुवाच ह ।।6.61.4।।


रामः Rama, विद्रुताम् scared, वाहिनीम् army, वर्धमानम् growing big, राक्षसं च and Rakshasas, दृष्टवा seeing, सविस्मय astonished, विभीषणम् Vibheeshana, इदम् thus, उवाच ह spoke.

Seeing the army scared away and the army of Rakshasas growing in size, Rama was astonished and thus spoke to Vibheeshana.
कोऽसौपर्वतसङ्काशःकिरीटीहरिलोचनः ।

लङ्कायांदृश्यतेवीरःसविद्युदिवतोयदः ।।6.61.5।।


पर्वतसङ्काशः resembling mountain, किरीटी crowned, हरिलोचनः of tawny eyes, सविद्युत् by lightning, तोयदःइव like rainy cloud, वीरः hero, लङ्कायाम् at Lanka, दृश्यते seen, असौ oh, क who is he.

"Who is that hero resembling a mountain, a crowned one with tawny eyes, looking like a rainy cloud driven by lightning? He is seen in Lanka."
पृथिव्यांकेतुभूतोऽसौमहानेकोऽत्रदृश्यते ।

यंदृष्टवावानरास्सर्वेविद्रवन्तिततस्ततः ।।6.61.6।।


महान् remarkable, असौ he is, एकः lone, अत्र there, पृथिव्याम् earth, केतुभूतः comet, दृश्यते appears, यम् him, दृष्टवा on seeing, सर्वे all, वानराः Vanaras, ततस्ततः hither and thither, विद्रवन्ति fleeing.

"He is seen here like a lone comet on earth. Seeing him the Vanaras are fleeing hither and thither."
आचक्षवसुमहान् कोऽसौरक्षोवायदिवाऽसुरः ।

न मयैवंविधंभूतंदृष्टपूर्वंकदाचन ।।6.61.7।।


सुमहान् gigantic, असौ he is, क who, रक्षःवा that Rakshasa, यदिवा perhaps, असुरः demon, आचक्षव colossus, मया by me, एवंविधम् this kind, धूतम् messenger, कदाचन not seen, न दृष्टपूर्वम् not seen earlier.

"Who is he, that gigantic Rakshasa? Is he a demon or perhaps a colossus? No such being was seen by me earlier."
संपृष्टोराजपुत्रेणरामेणाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ।

विभीषणोमहाप्राज्ञःकाकुत्थ्समिदमब्रवीत् ।।6.61.8।।


राजपुत्रेण by the prince, अक्लिष्टकर्मण of unwearied action, रामेण by Rama, संपृष्टः having been asked, महाप्राज्ञः highly intelligent, विभीषणः Vibheeshana, काकुत्थ्सम् to Kakuthsa, इदम् thus, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Asked by the prince Rama, of unwearied action, highly intelligent Vibheeshana spoke.
येनवैवस्वतोयुद्धेवासवश्चपराजितः ।

सैषविश्रवसःपुत्रःकुम्भकर्णःप्रतापवान् ।।6.61.9।।

अस्यप्रमाणसदृशोराक्षसाऽन्यो न विद्यते ।


येन by him, युद्धे war, वैवस्वतः Vyvasvatha, वासवश्च Vasava's, पराजितः defeated, सः he, एषः that way, विश्रवसः Visrava, पुत्रः son, प्रतापवान् stupendous, कुम्भकर्णः Kumbhakarna, अस्य his, प्रमाणसदृशः in size, अन्यःराक्षसः other Rakshasas, न विद्यते not known.

"Vyvasvatha (Lord of death) as well as Vasava (Indra) were defeated by him in war. He is Kumbhakarna, the son of sage Visrava, a stupendous one and there is no other Rakshasa who equals him in size."
एतेनदेवायुधिदानवाश्चयक्षाभुजङ्गाःपिशिताशनाश्च ।

गन्धर्वविद्याधरकिन्नरैश्चसहस्रशोराघवसम्प्रभग्नाः ।।6.61.10।।


राघव Raghava, एतेन by him, युधि in war, देवाः Devas, दानवाश्च and Danavas, यक्षाः yaksha, भुजङ्गाः Nagas, पिशिताशनाश्च ogres, गन्धर्व Gandharvas, विद्याधर Vidyadharas, किन्नरैश्च Kinneras, सहस्रशः in thousands, सम्प्रभग्नाः were all defeated.

"O Raghava! In war Devas, Danavas, Yakshas, Nagas, ogres, Gandharvas, Vidydharas, Kinneras in thousands were defeated by him."
शूलपाणिंविरूपाक्षंकुम्भकर्णंमहाबलम् ।

हन्तुं न शेकुस्त्रिदशाःकालोऽयमितिमोहिताः ।।6.61.11।।


शूलपाणिम् with pike in hand, विरूपाक्षम् fierce eyes, महाबलम् mighty strong, कुम्भकर्णम् Kumbhakarna, स्त्रिदशाः all Devatas, अयम् this, कालःइति death personified, मोहिताः deluded, हन्तुम् to think of killing, न शेकुः not kill.

"This Kumbhakarna with pike in hand and fierce eyes, is mighty strong. All the Devatas could not kill him, deluded that he is death personified."
प्रकृत्याह्येषतेजस्वीकुम्भकर्णोमहाबलः ।

अन्येषांराक्षसेन्द्राणांवरदानकृतंबलम् ।।6.61.12।।


एषः in that way, कुम्भकर्णः Kumbhakarna, प्रकृत्याः by nature, तेजस्वी energetic, महाबलः mighty, अन्येषाम् of others, राक्षसेन्द्राणाम् Rakshasa kings, बलम् strength, वरदानकृतम् is on account of boons.

"Kumbhakarna is by nature (by birth) energetic and mighty. The strength of other Rakshasas is on account of their boons received by them."
एतेनजातमात्रेणक्षुधार्तेनमहात्मना ।

भक्षितानिसहस्राणिसत्त्वानांसुबहून्यपि ।।6.61.13।।


जातमात्रेण as he was born, क्षुधार्तेन due to hunger, एतेन all, महात्मना great soul, सत्त्वानाम् created beings, सुबहूनिअपि being strong, सहस्राणि thousands, भक्षितानि were consumed.

" As soon as he was born, he was hungry and this great soul being strong consumed thousands of created beings."
तेषुसंभक्षयमाणेषुप्रजाभयनिपीडिताः ।

यान्तिस्मशरणंशक्रंतमप्यर्थंन्यवेदयन् ।।6.61.14।।


तेषु that way, सम्भक्षयमाणेषु was eating every one, प्रजाः people, भयनिपीडिताः out of fear, शक्रम् Indra, शरणंयान्तिस्म sought refuge, तम् they, अर्धम् अपि all about, न्यवेदयन् represented.

"In that way when Kumbhakarna was devouring, out of fear all people sought the refuge of Indra and represented."
सकुन्भकर्णंकुपितोमहेन्द्रोजघानवज्रेणशितेनवज्री ।

सशक्रवज्राभिहतोमहात्माचचालकोपाच्चभृशंननाद ।।6.61.15।।


वज्री armed with thunderbolt, सः he, महेन्द्रः Mahendra, कुपितः enraged, कुम्भकर्णम् Kumbhakarna, वज्रेण at Indra, जघान hurt, शक्रवज्राभिहतः with thunderbolt, महात्मा great self, सः he, चचाल reeled, कोपात् in anger, भृशम् intense, ननाद च roared.

"Mahendra who was armed with thunderbolt got enraged and hurt Kumbhakarna with thunderbolt. He reeled and roared with the strike."
तस्यनानद्यमानस्यकुम्भकर्णस्यरक्षसः ।

श्रुत्वानिनादंवित्रस्ताःभूमिभूयोवितत्रसे ।।6.61.16।।


वित्रस्ताः alarmed, प्रजाः people, नानद्यमानस्य hearing the lion roar, रक्षसः Rakshasa, तस्यकुम्भकर्णस्य that Kumbhakarna's, निनादम् roar, श्रुत्वा hearing, भूयः became, वितत्रसे scared.

"People were already afraid of Kumbhakarna, and after hearing the lion roar of this Rakshasa they were even more scared."
तत्रकोपान्महेन्द्रस्यकुम्भकर्णोमहाबलः ।

विकृष्यैरावताद्धन्तंजघानोरसिवासवम् ।।6.61.17।।


तत्र then, महेन्द्रस्य Mahendra's, कोपात् anger, महाबलः mighty, कुम्भकर्णः Kumbhakarna, ऐरावतात् Airavatham, दन्तम् tusk, विकृष्य tearing, वासवम् from the mouth, उरसि chest, जघान struck.

"Then mighty Kumbhakarna, who was enraged, pulled out the tusk of Airavatham and struck at the chest of Indra."
कुम्भकर्णप्रहारार्तोविजज्वाल स वासवः ।

ततोविषेदुस्सहसादेवाब्रह्मर्षिदानवाः ।।6.61.18।।

प्रजाभिस्सहशक्रश्चययौस्थानंस्वयम्भुवः ।


सः he, वासवः Indra, कुम्भकर्णप्रहारार्तः for Kumbhakarna's hit, विजज्वाल tormented, ततः then, देवाः Devatas, ब्रह्मर्षिदानवाः Brahmarshis, Danavas, सहसा with force, निषेदुः despondent, शक्रश्च Indra's, प्रजाभिःसह accompanied with created beings, स्वयम्भुवः to Brahma, स्थानम् place, ययौ complained.

"Hit by Kumbhakarna Indra felt tormented. The Devatas, Brahmarshis and Danavas became despondent. Accompanied by created beings they complained to Brahma."
कुम्भकर्णस्यदौरात्म्यंशशंसुस्तेप्रजापतेः ।।6.61.19।।

प्रजानांभक्षणंचापिधर्षणं च दिवौकसाम् ।

आश्रमध्वंसनंचापिपरस्त्रीहरणंभृशम् ।।6.61.20।।


ते you, प्रजापतेः Brahma, कुम्भकर्णस्य Kumbhakarna's, दौरात्म्यम् ruthless deeds, प्रजानाम् created beings, भक्षणंचापि devouring, दिवौकसाम् insulting, धर्षणं च harshness, आश्रमध्वंसनंचापि also destroying the abodes of sages, भृशम् violently, परस्त्रीहरणम् abducted others' wives, शशंसुः reported.

"They reported to Brahma about Kumbhakarna's ruthless deeds, devouring created beings, insulting, harsh and also destroying the abodes of sages violently and abducting others' wives."
एवंप्रजायदित्वेषभक्षयिष्यतिनित्यशः ।

अचिरेणैवकालेनशून्योलोकोभविष्यति ।।6.61.21।।


एषः if he, एवम् in that way, नित्यशः every day, प्रजाः created beings, भक्षयिष्यतियदि if consumes, अचिरेण soon, कालेनैव in course of time, लोकः world, शून्यः empty, भविष्यति will become.

"If he consumes created beings every day like that, in the course of time the world will be devoid of beings."
वासवस्यवचश्श्रुत्वासर्वलोकपितामहः ।

रक्षांस्यावाहयामासकुम्भकर्णंददर्श ह ।।6.61.22।।


सर्वलोकपितामहः Brahma (the grandfather of the whole universe), वासवस्य Indra, वचः words, श्रुत्वा hearing, रक्षांसि Rakshasas, आवाहयामास conjured, कुम्भकर्णम् Kumbhakarna, ददर्शह saw.

Hearing the words of Indra, Brahma conjured the Rakshasas and saw Kumbhakarna with them.
कुम्भकर्णंसमीक्ष्यैववितत्रासप्रजापतिः ।

दृष्टवाविश्वास्यचैवैनंस्वयम्भूरिदमब्रवीत् ।।6.61.23।।


कुम्भकर्णम् Kumbhakarna, समीक्ष्यैव beholding, प्रजापतिः Brahma, वितत्रास alarmed, स्वयम्भूः Brahma, दृष्टवा seeing, विश्वास्यचैवैनम् to restore confidence, इदं, this अब्रवीत् spoke.

"Beholding Kumbhakarna, Brahma was alarmed and spoke to him to restore the confidence of Kumbhakarna."
ध्रुवंलोकविनाशायपौलस्त्येनासिनिर्मितः ।

तस्मात्त्वमद्यप्रभृतिमृतकल्पःशयिष्यसे ।।6.61.24।।


लोकविनाशाय for the destruction of the universe, पौलस्त्येन by Paulastya, निर्मितःअपि begotten, ध्रुवम् surely, तस्मात् therefore, त्वम् you, अद्यप्रभृति remain from today, मृतकल्पः sleep like a dead one, शयिष्यसे lying down.

"Surely you are begotten by Paulastya for the destruction of the universe. Therefore, remain sleeping like a dead one from today, ' said Brahma and cursed him."
ब्रह्मशापाभिभूतोऽथनिपपाताग्रतःप्रभोः ।

ततःपरमसम्भ्रान्तोरावणोवाक्यमब्रवीत् ।।6.61.25।।


अथ and then, ब्रह्मशापाभिभूतः by the curse of Brahma, प्रभोः Lord, अग्रतः front, ततः then, परमसम्भ्रान्तः highly agitated, रावणः Ravana, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

"Thereafter, by the curse of Lord Brahma, Kumbhakarna fell in front. Highly agitated at this Ravana spoke these words to Brahma."
विवृद्धःकाञ्चनोवृक्षःफलकालेनिकृत्यते ।

न नप्तारंस्वकंन्यायंशप्तुमेवंप्रजापते ।।6.61.26।।


प्रजापते Brahma, विवृद्धः developing, काञ्चनःवृक्षः golden tree, फलकाले at the stage of fruiting, निकृत्यते cutting, स्वकम् by you, नप्तारम् great grandson, एवम् in that way, शप्तुम् son, न न्यायम् not proper.

"Oh Brahma! Cutting a golden tree at the stage of fruiting is not fair. It is not proper for you to curse your great grandson in that way."
न मिथ्यावचनश्चत्वंस्वप्स्यत्येष न संशयः ।

कालस्तुक्रियतामस्यशयनेजागरेतथा ।।6.61.27।।


त्वम् by you, मिथ्यावचनः untrue, न च not be, संशयः न no doubt, स्वप्स्यत्येष sleep he must, अस्य his, शयने sleep, तथा like that, जागरे waking, कालः time, क्रियताम् may be fixed.

"Your words will not become untrue, no doubt. Sleep, he must but waking time may be fixed."
रावणस्यवचश्श्रुत्वास्वयम्भूरिदमब्रवीत् ।

शयिताह्येषषण्मासानेकाहंजागरिष्यति ।।6.61.28।।


रावणस्य Ravana's, वचः words, श्रुत्वा on hearing, स्वयम्भूः Brahma, इदम् thus, अब्रवीत् spoke, एषः if, षट् six, मासान् months, शयिताहि he sleeps, एकाहम् one day, जागरिष्यति will be awake.

On hearing Ravana's words, Brahma said" He will sleep for six months and stay awake for a day."
एकेनाह्नात्वसौवीरश्चरन् भूमिंबुभुक्षितः ।

व्यात्तास्योभक्षयेल्लोकान् सङ्कृद्धइवपावकः ।।6.61.29।।


असौवीरः This hero, एकेन alone, आह्ना mouth, बुभुक्षितः will consume, भूमिम् the earth, चरन् moving about, व्यात्तास्यः opening the mouth wide, सङ्कृद्धः like the swollen fire, पावकःइव like fire, लोकान् the world, भक्षयेत् will consume.

"This hero will open his mouth wide and move about and alone he will consume the world like the swollen fire."
सोऽसौव्यसमापन्नःकुम्भकर्णमबोधयत् ।

त्वत्पराक्रमभीतश्चराजासम्प्रतिरावणः ।।6.61.30।।


व्यसनम् worry, आपन्नः overtaken, राजा king, सः he, असौ is, रावणः Ravana, त्वत्पराक्रमभीतः च by the fear of your prowess, सम्प्रति sleeping, कुम्भकर्णम् Kumbhakarna, अबोधयत् is awakened.

"Overtaken by worry, the king out of fear of your prowess just awakened sleeping Kumbhakarna."
स एषनिर्गतोवीरःशिबिराद्भीमविक्रमः ।

वानरान्भृशसङ्कृद्धोभक्षयन्परिधावति ।।6.61.31।।


भीमविक्रमः fierce valour, सः he, एषः if, वीरः heroic, शिभिरात् from his residence, निर्गतः come out, भृशसङ्कृद्धः extremely angry, वानरान् Vanaras, भक्षयन् to consume, परिधावति going to and from.

"This heroic Kumbhakarna has come out of his residence extremely angry and going to and from to consume all Vanaras."
कुम्भकर्णंसमीक्ष्यैवहरयोऽद्यप्रविद्रुतुः ।

कथमेनंरणेक्रुद्धंवारयिष्यन्तिवानराः ।।6.61.32।।


अद्य running, हरयः monkeys, कुम्भकर्णम् Kumbhakarna, प्रतीक्ष्यैव on seeing itself, प्रविद्रुतुः, रणे war, क्रुद्धम् angry, एनम् these, वानराः Vanaras, कथम् how, वारयिष्यन्ति check.

"On merely seeing Kumbhakarna, the monkeys are running away. How will they check him who is enraged in war?"
उच्यन्तांवानराःसर्वेयन्त्रमेतत्समुच्छ्रितम् ।

इतिविज्ञायहरयोभविष्यन्तीहनिर्भयाः ।।6.61.33।।


एतत् this, समुच्छ्रितम् standing high, यन्त्रम् machine, सर्वे all, वानराः Vanaras, उच्यन्ताम् having told, हरयः Vanaras, इति this, विज्ञाय victory, निर्भयाः not scared, इह here, भविष्यन्ति will be.

"Let all the Vanaras be told, that this one standing high is a machine then the Vanaras will not be scared of victory."
विभीषणवचश्श्रुत्वाहेतुमत्सुमुखेरितम् ।

उवाचराघवोवाक्यंनीलंसेनापतिंतदा ।।6.61.34।।


सुमुखेरितम् which was in favour, हेतुमत् reasonable, विभीषणवचः Vibheeshana's words, श्रुत्वा hearing, राघवः Raghava, तदा then, सेनापतिम् commander in chief of army, नीलम् Nila, वाक्यम् these words, उवाच said.

Hearing the words of Vibheeshana, which was reasonable and, in their favour, Raghava said this to Nila, the commander in chief of the army.
गच्छसैन्यानिसर्वाणिव्यूह्यतिष्ठस्वपावके ।

द्वाराण्यादायलङ्कायाश्चर्याश्चाप्यथसङ्क्रमान् ।।6.61.35।।


पावके Pavaka (the son of fire god), गच्छ go, सर्वाणि all, सैन्यानि army, व्यूह्य organizing, लङ्काया Lanka, द्वाराणि gates, चर्याश्चापि highways, अथ and, सङ्क्रमान् bridges, आदाय getting together, तिष्ठ occupying.

"Pavaka, go and organize all the army and get together to occupy all the gates, highways, bridges in Lanka."
शैलशृङ्गाणिवृक्षांश्चशिलाश्चाप्युपसंहर ।

तिष्ठन्तुसायुधास्सर्वेसायुधाश्शैलपाणयः ।।6.61.36।।


शैलशृङ्गाणि mountain tops, वृक्षांश्च trees also, शिलाश्चापि rocks too, उपसंहार be ready, सर्वे all, सायुधाः armed with weapons, शैलपाणयः rocks in hand, तिष्ठन्तु stay.

"Be ready staying on mountain tops, trees, rocks armed with weapons and rocks in hand."
राघवेणसमादिष्टोनीलोहरिचमूपतिः ।

शशासवानरानीकंयथावत्कपिकुञ्जरः ।।6.61.37।।


राघवेण by Raghava, समादिष्टः instructed, हरिचमूपतिः monkey leader, कपिकुञ्जरः elephant among monkeys, नीलः Nila, वानरानीकम् monkey troops, यथावत् as instructed, शशास ordered.

As instructed by Raghava, the monkey leader Nila, elephant among the monkeys, ordered the monkey troops as instructed.
ततोगवाक्षश्शरभोहनूमानङ्गदस्तथा ।

शैलशृङ्गाणिशैलाभागृहीत्वाद्वारमभ्ययुः ।।6.61.38।।


ततः then, शैलाभाः mountains, गवाक्षः Gavaksha, शरभं Sarabha, हनूमन् Hanuman, तथा so also, अङ्गदः Angada, शैलशृङ्गाणि looked like mountains, गृहीत्वा taking, द्वारम् gate, अभ्ययुः marched.

Then taking mountains, Gavaksha, Sarabha, Hanuman, Angada who looked like mountains themselves marched to the gate.
रामवाक्यमुपश्रुत्य हरयो जितकाशिनः ।

पादपैरर्दयवनीरावानराःपरवाहिनीम् ।।6.61.39।।


जितकाशिनः desiring to be triumphant, हरयः monkeys, रामवाक्यम् Rama's command, उपश्रुत्य hearing, वीराः heroes, वानराः Vanara, पादपैः trees, परवाहिनीम् enemies, अर्धयन् began to strike.

The monkeys desiring to be triumphant, took trees and began to strike at the enemies on hearing Rama's control.
ततोहरीणांतदनीकमुग्रंरराजशैलोद्यतदीप्तहस्तम् ।

गिरेःसमीपानुगतंयथैवहन्महाम्भोधरजालमुग्रम् ।।6.61.40।।


ततः then, शैलोद्यतदीप्तहस्तम् taking trees and rocks in their shining hand s, हरीणाम् the Vanaras, उग्रम् front, तत् that, गिरेः mountain, समीपानुगतम् close to each other, उग्रम् terrible, महत् huge, महाम्भोधरजालंयथैव like mass of clouds hanging, रराज seemed.

Then Vanaras taking trees and mountains in their shining hand s marching close to each other seemed like a huge mass of terrible clouds hanging close to a mountain.
।।इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेषष्टितमस्सर्गः ।।
This is the end of the sixty first sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
