Sloka & Translation

[Vibheeshana speaks to Rama about Kumbhakarna. By the command of Rama, the Vanaras take position at the gates of Lanka.]

tatōrāmōmahātējādhanurādāyavīryavān .

kirīṭinaṅmahākāyaṅkumbhakarṇaṅdadarśa ha ।।6.61.1।।


tataḥ then, mahātējāḥ of extraordinary energy, vīryavān prodigious, rāmaḥ Rama, dhanuḥ bow, ādāya taking, kirīṭinam adorned with crown, mahākāyam of large size, kumbhakarṇam Kumbhakarna, dadarśa saw.

On taking up a bow Rama saw Kumbhakarna of extraordinary energy, prodigious, and of large body, adorned with a crown.
taṅdṛṣṭavārākṣasaśrēṣṭhaṅparvatākāradarśanam .

kramamāṇamivākāśaṅpurānārāyaṇaṅprabhum ।।6.61.2।।


parvatākāradarśanam like a mountain in appearance, purā earlier, ākāśam sky, kramamāṇam taking steps, prabhum Lord, nārāyaṇaṅ Narayana, yathā so also, taṅrākṣasaśrēṣṭham that foremost of Rakshasas, dṛṣṭava I witnessed.

That foremost of Rakshasas was like a mountain in appearance, it was like Lord Narayana taking steps to the sky earlier.
satōyāmbudasaṅkāśaṅkāñcanāṅgadabhūṣaṇam .

dṛṣṭavāpunaḥpradudravāvānarāṇāṅmahācamūḥ ।।6.61.3।।


satōyāmbudasaṅkāśam like rainy cloud with water, kāñcanāṅgadabhūṣaṇam decked with gold ornaments, dṛṣṭavā seeing, vānarāṇām Vanaras, mahācamūḥ commander in chief, punaḥ again, pradudrāva ran.

Seeing the Rakshasa who was like a rainy cloud with water, decked with gold ornaments, the commander in chief of Vanaras ran.
vidrutāṅvāhinīṅdṛṣṭavāvardhamānaṅ ca rākṣasam .

savismayamidaṅrāmōvibhīṣaṇamuvāca ha ।।6.61.4।।


rāmaḥ Rama, vidrutām scared, vāhinīm army, vardhamānam growing big, rākṣasaṅ ca and Rakshasas, dṛṣṭavā seeing, savismaya astonished, vibhīṣaṇam Vibheeshana, idam thus, uvāca ha spoke.

Seeing the army scared away and the army of Rakshasas growing in size, Rama was astonished and thus spoke to Vibheeshana.
kō.sauparvatasaṅkāśaḥkirīṭīharilōcanaḥ .

laṅkāyāṅdṛśyatēvīraḥsavidyudivatōyadaḥ ।।6.61.5।।


parvatasaṅkāśaḥ resembling mountain, kirīṭī crowned, harilōcanaḥ of tawny eyes, savidyut by lightning, tōyadaḥiva like rainy cloud, vīraḥ hero, laṅkāyām at Lanka, dṛśyatē seen, asau oh, ka who is he.

"Who is that hero resembling a mountain, a crowned one with tawny eyes, looking like a rainy cloud driven by lightning? He is seen in Lanka."
pṛthivyāṅkētubhūtō.saumahānēkō.tradṛśyatē .

yaṅdṛṣṭavāvānarāssarvēvidravantitatastataḥ ।।6.61.6।।


mahān remarkable, asau he is, ēkaḥ lone, atra there, pṛthivyām earth, kētubhūtaḥ comet, dṛśyatē appears, yam him, dṛṣṭavā on seeing, sarvē all, vānarāḥ Vanaras, tatastataḥ hither and thither, vidravanti fleeing.

"He is seen here like a lone comet on earth. Seeing him the Vanaras are fleeing hither and thither."
ācakṣavasumahān kō.saurakṣōvāyadivā.suraḥ .

na mayaivaṅvidhaṅbhūtaṅdṛṣṭapūrvaṅkadācana ।।6.61.7।।


sumahān gigantic, asau he is, ka who, rakṣaḥvā that Rakshasa, yadivā perhaps, asuraḥ demon, ācakṣava colossus, mayā by me, ēvaṅvidham this kind, dhūtam messenger, kadācana not seen, na dṛṣṭapūrvam not seen earlier.

"Who is he, that gigantic Rakshasa? Is he a demon or perhaps a colossus? No such being was seen by me earlier."
saṅpṛṣṭōrājaputrēṇarāmēṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā .

vibhīṣaṇōmahāprājñaḥkākutthsamidamabravīt ।।6.61.8।।


rājaputrēṇa by the prince, akliṣṭakarmaṇa of unwearied action, rāmēṇa by Rama, saṅpṛṣṭaḥ having been asked, mahāprājñaḥ highly intelligent, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, kākutthsam to Kakuthsa, idam thus, abravīt spoke.

Asked by the prince Rama, of unwearied action, highly intelligent Vibheeshana spoke.
yēnavaivasvatōyuddhēvāsavaścaparājitaḥ .

saiṣaviśravasaḥputraḥkumbhakarṇaḥpratāpavān ।।6.61.9।।

asyapramāṇasadṛśōrākṣasā.nyō na vidyatē .


yēna by him, yuddhē war, vaivasvataḥ Vyvasvatha, vāsavaśca Vasava's, parājitaḥ defeated, saḥ he, ēṣaḥ that way, viśravasaḥ Visrava, putraḥ son, pratāpavān stupendous, kumbhakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, asya his, pramāṇasadṛśaḥ in size, anyaḥrākṣasaḥ other Rakshasas, na vidyatē not known.

"Vyvasvatha (Lord of death) as well as Vasava (Indra) were defeated by him in war. He is Kumbhakarna, the son of sage Visrava, a stupendous one and there is no other Rakshasa who equals him in size."
ētēnadēvāyudhidānavāścayakṣābhujaṅgāḥpiśitāśanāśca .

gandharvavidyādharakinnaraiścasahasraśōrāghavasamprabhagnāḥ ।।6.61.10।।


rāghava Raghava, ētēna by him, yudhi in war, dēvāḥ Devas, dānavāśca and Danavas, yakṣāḥ yaksha, bhujaṅgāḥ Nagas, piśitāśanāśca ogres, gandharva Gandharvas, vidyādhara Vidyadharas, kinnaraiśca Kinneras, sahasraśaḥ in thousands, samprabhagnāḥ were all defeated.

"O Raghava! In war Devas, Danavas, Yakshas, Nagas, ogres, Gandharvas, Vidydharas, Kinneras in thousands were defeated by him."
śūlapāṇiṅvirūpākṣaṅkumbhakarṇaṅmahābalam .

hantuṅ na śēkustridaśāḥkālō.yamitimōhitāḥ ।।6.61.11।।


śūlapāṇim with pike in hand, virūpākṣam fierce eyes, mahābalam mighty strong, kumbhakarṇam Kumbhakarna, stridaśāḥ all Devatas, ayam this, kālaḥiti death personified, mōhitāḥ deluded, hantum to think of killing, na śēkuḥ not kill.

"This Kumbhakarna with pike in hand and fierce eyes, is mighty strong. All the Devatas could not kill him, deluded that he is death personified."
prakṛtyāhyēṣatējasvīkumbhakarṇōmahābalaḥ .

anyēṣāṅrākṣasēndrāṇāṅvaradānakṛtaṅbalam ।।6.61.12।।


ēṣaḥ in that way, kumbhakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, prakṛtyāḥ by nature, tējasvī energetic, mahābalaḥ mighty, anyēṣām of others, rākṣasēndrāṇām Rakshasa kings, balam strength, varadānakṛtam is on account of boons.

"Kumbhakarna is by nature (by birth) energetic and mighty. The strength of other Rakshasas is on account of their boons received by them."
ētēnajātamātrēṇakṣudhārtēnamahātmanā .

bhakṣitānisahasrāṇisattvānāṅsubahūnyapi ।।6.61.13।।


jātamātrēṇa as he was born, kṣudhārtēna due to hunger, ētēna all, mahātmanā great soul, sattvānām created beings, subahūniapi being strong, sahasrāṇi thousands, bhakṣitāni were consumed.

" As soon as he was born, he was hungry and this great soul being strong consumed thousands of created beings."
tēṣusaṅbhakṣayamāṇēṣuprajābhayanipīḍitāḥ .

yāntismaśaraṇaṅśakraṅtamapyarthaṅnyavēdayan ।।6.61.14।।


tēṣu that way, sambhakṣayamāṇēṣu was eating every one, prajāḥ people, bhayanipīḍitāḥ out of fear, śakram Indra, śaraṇaṅyāntisma sought refuge, tam they, ardham api all about, nyavēdayan represented.

"In that way when Kumbhakarna was devouring, out of fear all people sought the refuge of Indra and represented."
sakunbhakarṇaṅkupitōmahēndrōjaghānavajrēṇaśitēnavajrī .

saśakravajrābhihatōmahātmācacālakōpāccabhṛśaṅnanāda ।।6.61.15।।


vajrī armed with thunderbolt, saḥ he, mahēndraḥ Mahendra, kupitaḥ enraged, kumbhakarṇam Kumbhakarna, vajrēṇa at Indra, jaghāna hurt, śakravajrābhihataḥ with thunderbolt, mahātmā great self, saḥ he, cacāla reeled, kōpāt in anger, bhṛśam intense, nanāda ca roared.

"Mahendra who was armed with thunderbolt got enraged and hurt Kumbhakarna with thunderbolt. He reeled and roared with the strike."
tasyanānadyamānasyakumbhakarṇasyarakṣasaḥ .

śrutvāninādaṅvitrastāḥbhūmibhūyōvitatrasē ।।6.61.16।।


vitrastāḥ alarmed, prajāḥ people, nānadyamānasya hearing the lion roar, rakṣasaḥ Rakshasa, tasyakumbhakarṇasya that Kumbhakarna's, ninādam roar, śrutvā hearing, bhūyaḥ became, vitatrasē scared.

"People were already afraid of Kumbhakarna, and after hearing the lion roar of this Rakshasa they were even more scared."
tatrakōpānmahēndrasyakumbhakarṇōmahābalaḥ .

vikṛṣyairāvatāddhantaṅjaghānōrasivāsavam ।।6.61.17।।


tatra then, mahēndrasya Mahendra's, kōpāt anger, mahābalaḥ mighty, kumbhakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, airāvatāt Airavatham, dantam tusk, vikṛṣya tearing, vāsavam from the mouth, urasi chest, jaghāna struck.

"Then mighty Kumbhakarna, who was enraged, pulled out the tusk of Airavatham and struck at the chest of Indra."
kumbhakarṇaprahārārtōvijajvāla sa vāsavaḥ .

tatōviṣēdussahasādēvābrahmarṣidānavāḥ ।।6.61.18।।

prajābhissahaśakraścayayausthānaṅsvayambhuvaḥ .


saḥ he, vāsavaḥ Indra, kumbhakarṇaprahārārtaḥ for Kumbhakarna's hit, vijajvāla tormented, tataḥ then, dēvāḥ Devatas, brahmarṣidānavāḥ Brahmarshis, Danavas, sahasā with force, niṣēduḥ despondent, śakraśca Indra's, prajābhiḥsaha accompanied with created beings, svayambhuvaḥ to Brahma, sthānam place, yayau complained.

"Hit by Kumbhakarna Indra felt tormented. The Devatas, Brahmarshis and Danavas became despondent. Accompanied by created beings they complained to Brahma."
kumbhakarṇasyadaurātmyaṅśaśaṅsustēprajāpatēḥ ।।6.61.19।।

prajānāṅbhakṣaṇaṅcāpidharṣaṇaṅ ca divaukasām .

āśramadhvaṅsanaṅcāpiparastrīharaṇaṅbhṛśam ।।6.61.20।।


tē you, prajāpatēḥ Brahma, kumbhakarṇasya Kumbhakarna's, daurātmyam ruthless deeds, prajānām created beings, bhakṣaṇaṅcāpi devouring, divaukasām insulting, dharṣaṇaṅ ca harshness, āśramadhvaṅsanaṅcāpi also destroying the abodes of sages, bhṛśam violently, parastrīharaṇam abducted others' wives, śaśaṅsuḥ reported.

"They reported to Brahma about Kumbhakarna's ruthless deeds, devouring created beings, insulting, harsh and also destroying the abodes of sages violently and abducting others' wives."
ēvaṅprajāyaditvēṣabhakṣayiṣyatinityaśaḥ .

acirēṇaivakālēnaśūnyōlōkōbhaviṣyati ।।6.61.21।।


ēṣaḥ if he, ēvam in that way, nityaśaḥ every day, prajāḥ created beings, bhakṣayiṣyatiyadi if consumes, acirēṇa soon, kālēnaiva in course of time, lōkaḥ world, śūnyaḥ empty, bhaviṣyati will become.

"If he consumes created beings every day like that, in the course of time the world will be devoid of beings."
vāsavasyavacaśśrutvāsarvalōkapitāmahaḥ .

rakṣāṅsyāvāhayāmāsakumbhakarṇaṅdadarśa ha ।।6.61.22।।


sarvalōkapitāmahaḥ Brahma (the grandfather of the whole universe), vāsavasya Indra, vacaḥ words, śrutvā hearing, rakṣāṅsi Rakshasas, āvāhayāmāsa conjured, kumbhakarṇam Kumbhakarna, dadarśaha saw.

Hearing the words of Indra, Brahma conjured the Rakshasas and saw Kumbhakarna with them.
kumbhakarṇaṅsamīkṣyaivavitatrāsaprajāpatiḥ .

dṛṣṭavāviśvāsyacaivainaṅsvayambhūridamabravīt ।।6.61.23।।


kumbhakarṇam Kumbhakarna, samīkṣyaiva beholding, prajāpatiḥ Brahma, vitatrāsa alarmed, svayambhūḥ Brahma, dṛṣṭavā seeing, viśvāsyacaivainam to restore confidence, idaṅ, this abravīt spoke.

"Beholding Kumbhakarna, Brahma was alarmed and spoke to him to restore the confidence of Kumbhakarna."
dhruvaṅlōkavināśāyapaulastyēnāsinirmitaḥ .

tasmāttvamadyaprabhṛtimṛtakalpaḥśayiṣyasē ।।6.61.24।।


lōkavināśāya for the destruction of the universe, paulastyēna by Paulastya, nirmitaḥapi begotten, dhruvam surely, tasmāt therefore, tvam you, adyaprabhṛti remain from today, mṛtakalpaḥ sleep like a dead one, śayiṣyasē lying down.

"Surely you are begotten by Paulastya for the destruction of the universe. Therefore, remain sleeping like a dead one from today, ' said Brahma and cursed him."
brahmaśāpābhibhūtō.thanipapātāgrataḥprabhōḥ .

tataḥparamasambhrāntōrāvaṇōvākyamabravīt ।।6.61.25।।


atha and then, brahmaśāpābhibhūtaḥ by the curse of Brahma, prabhōḥ Lord, agrataḥ front, tataḥ then, paramasambhrāntaḥ highly agitated, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, vākyam words, abravīt spoke.

"Thereafter, by the curse of Lord Brahma, Kumbhakarna fell in front. Highly agitated at this Ravana spoke these words to Brahma."
vivṛddhaḥkāñcanōvṛkṣaḥphalakālēnikṛtyatē .

na naptāraṅsvakaṅnyāyaṅśaptumēvaṅprajāpatē ।।6.61.26।।


prajāpatē Brahma, vivṛddhaḥ developing, kāñcanaḥvṛkṣaḥ golden tree, phalakālē at the stage of fruiting, nikṛtyatē cutting, svakam by you, naptāram great grandson, ēvam in that way, śaptum son, na nyāyam not proper.

"Oh Brahma! Cutting a golden tree at the stage of fruiting is not fair. It is not proper for you to curse your great grandson in that way."
na mithyāvacanaścatvaṅsvapsyatyēṣa na saṅśayaḥ .

kālastukriyatāmasyaśayanējāgarētathā ।।6.61.27।।


tvam by you, mithyāvacanaḥ untrue, na ca not be, saṅśayaḥ na no doubt, svapsyatyēṣa sleep he must, asya his, śayanē sleep, tathā like that, jāgarē waking, kālaḥ time, kriyatām may be fixed.

"Your words will not become untrue, no doubt. Sleep, he must but waking time may be fixed."
rāvaṇasyavacaśśrutvāsvayambhūridamabravīt .

śayitāhyēṣaṣaṇmāsānēkāhaṅjāgariṣyati ।।6.61.28।।


rāvaṇasya Ravana's, vacaḥ words, śrutvā on hearing, svayambhūḥ Brahma, idam thus, abravīt spoke, ēṣaḥ if, ṣaṭ six, māsān months, śayitāhi he sleeps, ēkāham one day, jāgariṣyati will be awake.

On hearing Ravana's words, Brahma said" He will sleep for six months and stay awake for a day."
ēkēnāhnātvasauvīraścaran bhūmiṅbubhukṣitaḥ .

vyāttāsyōbhakṣayēllōkān saṅkṛddhaivapāvakaḥ ।।6.61.29।।


asauvīraḥ This hero, ēkēna alone, āhnā mouth, bubhukṣitaḥ will consume, bhūmim the earth, caran moving about, vyāttāsyaḥ opening the mouth wide, saṅkṛddhaḥ like the swollen fire, pāvakaḥiva like fire, lōkān the world, bhakṣayēt will consume.

"This hero will open his mouth wide and move about and alone he will consume the world like the swollen fire."
sō.sauvyasamāpannaḥkumbhakarṇamabōdhayat .

tvatparākramabhītaścarājāsampratirāvaṇaḥ ।।6.61.30।।


vyasanam worry, āpannaḥ overtaken, rājā king, saḥ he, asau is, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, tvatparākramabhītaḥ ca by the fear of your prowess, samprati sleeping, kumbhakarṇam Kumbhakarna, abōdhayat is awakened.

"Overtaken by worry, the king out of fear of your prowess just awakened sleeping Kumbhakarna."
sa ēṣanirgatōvīraḥśibirādbhīmavikramaḥ .

vānarānbhṛśasaṅkṛddhōbhakṣayanparidhāvati ।।6.61.31।।


bhīmavikramaḥ fierce valour, saḥ he, ēṣaḥ if, vīraḥ heroic, śibhirāt from his residence, nirgataḥ come out, bhṛśasaṅkṛddhaḥ extremely angry, vānarān Vanaras, bhakṣayan to consume, paridhāvati going to and from.

"This heroic Kumbhakarna has come out of his residence extremely angry and going to and from to consume all Vanaras."
kumbhakarṇaṅsamīkṣyaivaharayō.dyapravidrutuḥ .

kathamēnaṅraṇēkruddhaṅvārayiṣyantivānarāḥ ।।6.61.32।।


adya running, harayaḥ monkeys, kumbhakarṇam Kumbhakarna, pratīkṣyaiva on seeing itself, pravidrutuḥ, raṇē war, kruddham angry, ēnam these, vānarāḥ Vanaras, katham how, vārayiṣyanti check.

"On merely seeing Kumbhakarna, the monkeys are running away. How will they check him who is enraged in war?"
ucyantāṅvānarāḥsarvēyantramētatsamucchritam .

itivijñāyaharayōbhaviṣyantīhanirbhayāḥ ।।6.61.33।।


ētat this, samucchritam standing high, yantram machine, sarvē all, vānarāḥ Vanaras, ucyantām having told, harayaḥ Vanaras, iti this, vijñāya victory, nirbhayāḥ not scared, iha here, bhaviṣyanti will be.

"Let all the Vanaras be told, that this one standing high is a machine then the Vanaras will not be scared of victory."
vibhīṣaṇavacaśśrutvāhētumatsumukhēritam .

uvācarāghavōvākyaṅnīlaṅsēnāpatiṅtadā ।।6.61.34।।


sumukhēritam which was in favour, hētumat reasonable, vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ Vibheeshana's words, śrutvā hearing, rāghavaḥ Raghava, tadā then, sēnāpatim commander in chief of army, nīlam Nila, vākyam these words, uvāca said.

Hearing the words of Vibheeshana, which was reasonable and, in their favour, Raghava said this to Nila, the commander in chief of the army.
gacchasainyānisarvāṇivyūhyatiṣṭhasvapāvakē .

dvārāṇyādāyalaṅkāyāścaryāścāpyathasaṅkramān ।।6.61.35।।


pāvakē Pavaka (the son of fire god), gaccha go, sarvāṇi all, sainyāni army, vyūhya organizing, laṅkāyā Lanka, dvārāṇi gates, caryāścāpi highways, atha and, saṅkramān bridges, ādāya getting together, tiṣṭha occupying.

"Pavaka, go and organize all the army and get together to occupy all the gates, highways, bridges in Lanka."
śailaśṛṅgāṇivṛkṣāṅścaśilāścāpyupasaṅhara .

tiṣṭhantusāyudhāssarvēsāyudhāśśailapāṇayaḥ ।।6.61.36।।


śailaśṛṅgāṇi mountain tops, vṛkṣāṅśca trees also, śilāścāpi rocks too, upasaṅhāra be ready, sarvē all, sāyudhāḥ armed with weapons, śailapāṇayaḥ rocks in hand, tiṣṭhantu stay.

"Be ready staying on mountain tops, trees, rocks armed with weapons and rocks in hand."
rāghavēṇasamādiṣṭōnīlōharicamūpatiḥ .

śaśāsavānarānīkaṅyathāvatkapikuñjaraḥ ।।6.61.37।।


rāghavēṇa by Raghava, samādiṣṭaḥ instructed, haricamūpatiḥ monkey leader, kapikuñjaraḥ elephant among monkeys, nīlaḥ Nila, vānarānīkam monkey troops, yathāvat as instructed, śaśāsa ordered.

As instructed by Raghava, the monkey leader Nila, elephant among the monkeys, ordered the monkey troops as instructed.
tatōgavākṣaśśarabhōhanūmānaṅgadastathā .

śailaśṛṅgāṇiśailābhāgṛhītvādvāramabhyayuḥ ।।6.61.38।।


tataḥ then, śailābhāḥ mountains, gavākṣaḥ Gavaksha, śarabhaṅ Sarabha, hanūman Hanuman, tathā so also, aṅgadaḥ Angada, śailaśṛṅgāṇi looked like mountains, gṛhītvā taking, dvāram gate, abhyayuḥ marched.

Then taking mountains, Gavaksha, Sarabha, Hanuman, Angada who looked like mountains themselves marched to the gate.
rāmavākyamupaśrutya harayō jitakāśinaḥ .

pādapairardayavanīrāvānarāḥparavāhinīm ।।6.61.39।।


jitakāśinaḥ desiring to be triumphant, harayaḥ monkeys, rāmavākyam Rama's command, upaśrutya hearing, vīrāḥ heroes, vānarāḥ Vanara, pādapaiḥ trees, paravāhinīm enemies, ardhayan began to strike.

The monkeys desiring to be triumphant, took trees and began to strike at the enemies on hearing Rama's control.
tatōharīṇāṅtadanīkamugraṅrarājaśailōdyatadīptahastam .

girēḥsamīpānugataṅyathaivahanmahāmbhōdharajālamugram ।।6.61.40।।


tataḥ then, śailōdyatadīptahastam taking trees and rocks in their shining hand s, harīṇām the Vanaras, ugram front, tat that, girēḥ mountain, samīpānugatam close to each other, ugram terrible, mahat huge, mahāmbhōdharajālaṅyathaiva like mass of clouds hanging, rarāja seemed.

Then Vanaras taking trees and mountains in their shining hand s marching close to each other seemed like a huge mass of terrible clouds hanging close to a mountain.
।।ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēṣaṣṭitamassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the sixty first sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
