[Ravana reveals his fear of Rama to Kumbhakarna and urges him to destroy Rama.]

sa turākṣasaśārdūlōnidrāmadasamākulaḥ .

rājamārgaṅśriyājuṣṭaṅyayauvipulavikramaḥ ।।6.62.1।।


vipulavikramaḥ of indomitable prowess, saḥ he, rākṣasaśārdūlaḥ tiger among Rakshasas, nidrāmadasamākulaḥ sleepy and inebriated, śriyā prosperous, juṣṭam splendid, rājamārgam royal path, yayau marched.

He (Kumbhakaran), who was endowed with indomitable prowess, a tiger among Rakshasas, was sleepy and inebriated, marched along the splendid royal path.
rākṣasānāṅsahasraiścavṛtaḥparamadurjayaḥ .

gṛhēbhyaḥpuṣpavarṣēṇakīryamāṇastadāyayau ।।6.62.2।।


tadā then, paramadurjayaḥ very difficult to win, rākṣasānām Rakshasas, sahasraiḥ violently, vṛtaḥ surrounded, gṛhēbhyaḥ from the houses, puṣpavarṣēṇa rain of flowers, kīryamāṇaḥ covered, yayau went.

Then, Kumbhakarna, who is very difficult to win over, walked violently surrounded by Rakshasas, covered with showers of flowers from houses.
sa hēmajālavitataṅbhānubhāsvaradarśanam .

dadarśavipulaṅramyaṅrākṣasēndranivēśanam ।।6.62.3।।


saḥ he, hēmajālavitatam latticework of gold, bhānubhāsvaradarśanam bright as morning Sun, vipulam vast, ramyam delightful, rākṣasēndranivēśanam Rakshasa king's abode, dadarśa saw.

He saw the vast abode of the king of Rakshasas, with lattice work of gold and looking bright like the morning Sun
sa tattadāsūryaivābhrajālaṅpraviśyarakṣōdhipatērnivēśam .

dadarśadūrē.grajamāsanasthaṅsvayambhuvaṅśakravāsanastham ।।6.62.4।।


saḥ he, tadā then, sūryaḥ Sun, abhrajālam mass of clouds, iva like, rakṣōdhipatēḥ Lord of Rakshasas, nivēśam abode, praviśya entered, dūrē from distance, āsanastham seated on the throne, agrajam elder brother, śakraḥ Indra, āsanastham throne, svayambhuvam iva like Selfborn Brahma, dadarśa saw.

He saw entering the abode of Lord of Rakshasas like the Sun penetrating into a mass of clouds, from a distance his elder brother seated on the throne just like Indra saw the SelfBorn Brahma on the throne.
bhrātussabhavanaṅgacchanrakṣōgaṇasamanvim .

kumbhakarṇaḥpadanyāsairakampayatamēdinīm ।।6.62.5।।


rakṣōgaṇasamanvitam accompanied by the troops of Rakshasas, saḥkumbhakarṇaḥ that Kumbhakarna, bhrātuḥ brother, bhavanam mansion, gacchan going, padanyāsaiḥ by the strides, mēdinīm earth, ampayata shaken.

While Kumbhakarna accompanied by troops of Rakshasas, was taking strides to his brother's abode, even the earth was shaken.
sō.bhigamyagṛhaṅbhrātuḥkakṣyāmabhivigāhya ca .

dadarśōdvigannamāsīnaṅvimānēpuṣpakēgurum ।।6.62.6।।


saḥ he, bhrātuḥ brother, gṛham residence, abhigamya having gone, kakṣyām enclosure, abhivigāhya ca stepping in, puṣpakēvimānē Aerial chariot, āsīnam seated, udvignam perturbed, gurum state, dadarśa saw.

Having gone to his brother's residence, stepping into the enclosure, he saw his brother seated in a perturbed state.
athadṛṣṭavādaśagrīvaḥkumbhakarṇamupasthitam .

tūrṇamutthāyasaṅhṛṣṭaḥsannikarṣamupānayat ।।6.62.7।।


atha and then, daśagrīvaḥ ten headed, upasthitam getting up, kumbhakarṇam Kumbhakarna, dṛṣṭavā seeing, tūrṇam quickly, utthāya getting up, saṅhṛṣṭaḥ delighted, sannikarṣam close to him, upānayat brought.

The ten headed Ravana seeing Kumbhakarna, was delighted and got up quickly and made him come close to him.
athāsīnasyaparyaṅkēkumbhakarṇōmahābalaḥ .

bhrāturvavandēcaraṇaukiṅkṛtyamiticābravīt ।।6.62.8।।


atha and then, mahābalaḥ endowed with extraordinary might, kumbhakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, paryaṅkē getting up, āsīnasya from his seat, bhrātuḥ brother, caraṇau feet, vavandē clasped, kim what, kṛtyam task to do, iti ca now, abravīt said.

Getting up from his seat, Kumbhakarna endowed with extraordinary might bowed down and clasped his brother's feet and asked him, what task he had to do?
utpatyacainaṅmuditōrāvaṇaḥpariṣasvajē .

sa bhrātrāsampariṣvaktōyathāvacchābhinanditaḥ ।।6.62.9।।

kumbhakarṇaśśubhaṅdivyaṅpratipēdēvarāsanam .


rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, utpatya getting up, ēnam in that way, pariṣasvajē filled with joy, bhrātrā brother, pariṣvaktaḥ embraced, yathāvat similarly, abhinanditaḥ greeted, saḥkumbhakarṇaḥ that Kumbhakarna, śubham auspicious, divyam wonderful, varāsanam excellent seat, pratipēdē occupied.

Getting up from his seat Ravana embraced and greeted Kumbhakarna. So also, he duly rejoiced and occupied the seat.
sa tadāsanamāśrityakumbhakarṇōmahābalaḥ ।।6.62.10।।

saṅraktanayanaḥkrōdhādrāvaṇaṅvākyamabravīt .


mahābalaḥ mighty, saḥkumbhakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, tat that, āsanam seat, āśritya taking, krōdhāt enraged, saṅraktanayanaḥ blood shot eyes, rāvaṇam Ravana, vākyam words, abravīt spoke.

Mighty Kumbhakarna, duly took the seat. Enraged Ravana with blood shot eyes spoke these words.
kimarthamahamādṛtyatvayārājanvibōdhitaḥ ।।6.62.11।।

śaṅsakasmādbhayaṅtē.trakō.dyaprētōbhaviṣyati .


rājan king, aham I, adṛtya awakened, tvayā by you, kimartham for what purpose, vibōdhitaḥ tell me, adya you may, tē to you, kasmāt with the task, bhayam fear, śaṅsa doubt, prētaḥ to be ceased, bhaviṣyati I wish to know.

"O King! For what purpose have I been awakened by you? Whom are you fearing? I wish to know who is to be ceased in life?"
bhrātaraṅrāvaṇaḥkruddhaṅkumbhakarṇamavasthitam ।।6.62.12।।

īṣattuparivṛttābhyāṅnētrābhyāṅvākyamabravīt .


rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, kruddham angry, avasthitam seated, bhrātaram brother, kumbhakarṇam Kumbhakarna, īṣattu overcome with anger, parivṛttābhyām rolling, nētrābhyām eyes, vākyam words, abravīt said.

Kumbhakarna, was overcome with anger, and asked his brother Ravana, who was seated and rolling his eyes in anger.
adyatēsumahānkālaśśayānasyamahābala ।।6.62.13।।

sukhitastvaṅ na jānīṣēmamarāmakṛtaṅbhayam .


mahābala extraordinary prowess, śayānasya from sleep, tē you, adya arouse, sumahān long, kālaḥ time, sukhitaḥ sleeping, tvam you, mama me, rāmakṛtam of Rama, bhayam fear, na jānīṣē not know.

"Oh! Kumbhakarna of extraordinary prowess! You were asleep for long happily. You do not know that I am afraid of Rama."
ēṣadāśarathīrāmaḥsugrīvasahitōbalī ।।6.62.14।।

samudraṅsabalastīrtvāmūlaṅnaḥparikṛntati .


dāśarathiḥ Dasarathi, balī strong, ēṣaḥ he, rāmaḥ that Rama, sugrīvasahitaḥ accompanied by Sugriva, samudram ocean, sabalam with army, naḥmūlam at our roots, parikṛntati crossed.

"Rama, the son of Dasaratha accompanied by Sugriva, crossed the ocean with an army that was cutting our roots."
hantapaśyasvalaṅkāyāvanānyupavanāni ca ।।6.62.15।।

sētunāsukhamāgamyavānaraikārṇavīkṛtam .


hanta alas, paśyasva you see, laṅkāyāḥ Lanka, vanāni groves, pavanāni ca gardens, sētunā bridge happily, āgamya having come, vānaraikārṇavīm Vanaras work, kṛtam done.

" Alas! You see how the Vanaras, arriving at Lanka, crossing the bridge have done away with groves and gardens."
yērākṣasāmukhyatamāhatāstēvānarairyudhi ।।6.62.16।।

vānarāṇāṅkṣayaṅyuddhē na paśyāmikadācana .

nacāpivānarāyuddhējitapūrvāḥkadācana ।।6.62.17।।


mukhyatamāḥ of the chief, yērākṣasāḥ the Rakshasas, tē to you, yudhi in war, vānaraiḥ Vanara, hatāḥ killed, yuddhē in combat, vānarāṇām Vanaras, kṣayam killed, kadācana but even, na paśyāmi did not see, vānarāḥ Vanaras, yuddhē in war, kadācana even, jitapūrvāḥ not failed to succeed, na cāpi not seen.

"Of the Rakshasas, the chiefs have been killed in war by Vanaras. But I did not see even one Vanara to have been killed in war. Vanaras have not failed to succeed in war."
tadētadbhayamutpannaṅtrāyasvēmāṅmahabala .

nāśayatvamimānadyatadarthaṅbōdhitōbhavān ।।6.62.18।।


mahābala mighty strong, tat you, ētat this, bhayam fear, utpannam that is created, iha here, mām me, trāyasva from them, tam you, adya rising, imān these, nāśaya destroy, tadartham by that, bhavān you, bōdhitaḥ reported.

"Mighty strong I am, but such is the fear that has been created in me from them. You have been awakened, to destroy them. Reported Ravana."
sarvakṣapitakōśaṅ ca sa tvamabhyavapadyamām .

trāyasvēmāṅpurīṅlaṅkāṅbālavṛddhāvaśēṣitām ।।6.62.19।।


saḥ he, tvam you, sarvakṣapitakōśam all resources exhausted, mām my me, abhyavapadya striking at the enemy, bālavṛddhāvaśēṣitām children and aged are only left, imām these, laṅkāṅ Lanka, purīm city, trāyasva by you.

" All resources of mine are exhausted. These children and aged are only left in Lanka city, knowing that you will save the city of Lanka."
bhrāturarthēmahābāhō kurukarmasuduṣkaram .

mayaivaṅnōktapūrvōhikaścidbhrātaḥ parantapa ।।6.62.20।।


mahābāhō broad shouldered, bhrāta brother:, parantapa scourge, arthē you are, suduṣkaram difficult, karma task, kuru do, bhrātaḥ brother, mayā my, kaścit indeed, ēvam in that way, na uktapūrvaḥhi not asked you before.

"O broad shouldered brother! Do this task which is difficult for others. O Scourge of enemies! I have not asked you before for such a task."
tvayyastimamasnēhaḥparāsambhāvanā ca mē .

daivāsurēṣuyuddhēṣubahuśōrākṣasarṣabha ।।6.62.21।।

tvayādēvāḥprativyūhyanirjitāścāsurāyudhi .


rākṣasarṣabha bull among Rakshasas, mama my, tvayi you, snēhaḥ affection, asti being, mē to me, parā others, sambhāvanā ca considering, daivāsurēṣu Devas and Asuras, yuddhēṣu in war, prativyūhya encountered, tvayā by you, dēvāḥ Devas, asurāḥ Asuras, yudhi in war, bahuśaḥ perhaps, nirjitāḥ won.

"O Bull among Rakshasas! Being my brother, do this for me. I always have affection for you. Considering that you have encountered war with Devas and Asuras and won both Devas and Asuras, do this help."
tadētatsarvamātiṣṭhavīryaṅbhīmaparākrama ।।6.62.22।।

na hitēsarvabhūtēṣudṛśyatēsadṛśōbalī .


bhīmaparākramaḥ of fierce valour, tat that, ētat this, sarvam all, vīryam heroism, ātiṣṭha get up, sarvabhūtēṣu among all beings, tē to you, sadṛśaḥ, balī stronger, na dṛśyatēhi not seen.

"O Brother of fierce valour! Get up. I have not seen anyone stronger than you among all beings."
kuruṣvamēpriyahitamētaduttamaṅyathāpriyaṅpriyaraṇabāndhavapriya .

svatējasāvidhamasapatnavāhinīṅśaradghanaṅpavanaivōdyatōmahān ।।6.62.23।।


priyaraṇa lover of war, bāndhavapriya lover of relations, mē to me, priyahitam well wisher, ētat these, yathāpriyam always loving, kuruṣva do this, svatējasā self glorious, sapatnavāhinīm torrent army, udyataḥ throws, mahān great, pavanaḥ wind, śaradghanam iva rainy cloud, vidhama in that way.

"You are a lover of wars. You are a lover of relations. You are always my dear well wisher. O self glorious one! Do this task of throwing out the torrent army just like wind throws rainy clouds."
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēṣṭitamassargaḥ ।।
