[Mahodara suggests a plan to Ravana to win Rama without a fight.]

तदुक्तमतिकायस्यबलिनोबाहुशालिनः ।

कुम्भकर्णस्यवचनंश्रुत्वोवाचमहोदरः ।।6.64.1।।


अतिकायस्य of massive body, बलिनः mighty, बाहुशालिनः of wellformed shoulders, कुम्भकर्णस्य Kumbhakarna's, उक्तम् spoken, तत् that, वचनम् words, आकर्ण्य having heard, महोदरः Mahodara, उवाच said.

Hearing the words of mighty Kumbhakarna, of massive body and round arms Mahodara said.
कुम्भकर्णकुलेजातोधृष्टःप्राकृतदर्शनः ।

अवलिप्तो न शक्नोषिकृत्यंसर्वत्रवेदितुम् ।।6.64.2।।


कुम्भकर्ण Kumbhakarna, कुले noble, जातः race, धृष्टः seeing, प्राकृतदर्शनः insolent, अवलिप्तः of low intellect, सर्वत्र all aspects कृत्यम् actions, वेदितुम् knowledge, नशक्नोषि not know what should be done.

"Kumbhakarna! Although you are born of noble race, you are insolent, seeing your low intellect in all aspects you have no knowledge of what should be done or not to be done."
स्थानंवृद्धिं च हानि च देशकालविभागवित् ।

आत्मनश्चपरेषां च बुध्यतेराक्षसर्षभः ।।6.64.4।।


देशकालविभागवित् conversant with rules of time and place, राक्षसर्षभः bull among Rakshasas, आत्मनः च his own, परेषां च enemies also, स्थानम् place, वृद्धिं च progress, हानिं च and decline also, बुध्यते knows.

"Ravana, a bull among Rakshasas is conversant with rules of time and place and knows his own enemies, his progress and decline also."
यत्तुशक्यंबलवताकर्तुंप्राकृतबुद्धिना ।

अनुपासितवृद्धेनकःकुर्यात्तादृशंनरः ।।6.64.5।।


बलवता strong, प्राकृतबुद्धिना of unsophisticated intellect, अनुपासितवृद्धेन who is progressive, यत् such, अशक्यम् not possible, तादृशम् knower of everything, कः how, नरः a person, कुर्यात् will do.

" A strong person of unsophisticated intellect, who is progressive, a knower of everything will do such a task which is not possible to do?"
यांस्तुधर्मार्थकामांस्त्वंब्रवीषिपृथगाश्रयान् ।

अवबोद्धुंस्वभावेतान्नहिलक्षणमस्तितान् ।।6.64.6।।


त्वम् you, यान् such, धर्मार्थकामान् virtue worldly gain and sensuous pleasures, पृथगाश्रयान् separately as incompatible, ब्रवीषि told, तान् such qualities, स्वभावेन in their true nature, अवबोद्धुम् known, लक्षणम् qualities, नास्तिहि not exist.

"The virtues, worldly gain and sensuous pleasures give results separately as you said. They are incompatible with what you said and that it is its nature you said. what is the proof?"
कर्मचैवहिसर्वेषांकारणानांप्रयोजकम् ।

श्रेयःपापीयसांचात्रफलंभवतिकर्मणाम् ।।6.64.7।।


सर्वेषाम् for all, कारणानाम् means, कर्मचै action alone, प्रयोजकंहि happiness, अत्र and that, पापीयसाम् sinful, कर्मणां च actions also, श्रेयः good, फलम् result, भवति will accrue.

" Actions alone are the means of happiness. Being so how can sinful actions accrue good results?"
निश्श्रेयसफलावेवधर्मार्थावितरावपि ।

अधर्मानर्थयोःप्राप्तिःफलं च प्रत्यवायिकम् ।।6.64.8।।


धर्मार्थौ virtues and worldly pleasures, इतरौअपि even other, निश्श्रेयसफलौएव only give benefit, अधर्मानर्थयोः if done in unrighteous manner with disinterest, प्रत्यवायिकम् other than prosperity, फलं च the result also, प्राप्तम् will give.

" All virtues and worldly pleasures and even otherwise give only benefit. But if done with disinterest and unrighteousness it can give a result which is other than prosperity."
ऐहलौकिकपारक्यंकर्मपुम्भिर्निषेव्यते ।

कर्माण्यपितुकल्यानिलभतेकाममास्थितः ।।6.64.9।।


पुम्भिः men, ऐहलौकिकपारक्यम् the fruit of actions in this world and the other world, कर्म action, निषेव्यते remains, कामम् pleasure seeking, आस्थितः will reap,कल्यानि blessings, कर्माण्यपितु devoted to actions, लभते attain pleasures.

" All beings reap the fruit of their actions in this world as well as in other worlds. He, who remains to be pleasure seeking, devoted to actions will receive blessings and attain pleasures in this life only (not here after)."
तत्रक्लुप्तमिदंराज्ञाहृदिकार्यंमतं च नः ।

शत्रौहिसाहसंयत्स्यात्किमिवात्रापनीयते ।।6.64.10।।


तत्र then, राज्ञा king, हृदि in heart, इदम् these, कार्यम् actions, कृतम् done, नः च also approved by us, मतम् opinion, शत्रौ enemy, यत् such, साहसम् courageous, तत् that action, अत्र and then, किम् अपनीयते w hat is wrong in that.

" At that time the king intended in his heart (to abduct Sita), and we approved his action, and it was done. What is wrong in doing such a courageous action against an enemy?"
एकस्यैवाभियानेतुहेतुर्यःकथितस्त्वया ।

तत्राप्यनुपपन्नंतेवक्ष्यामियदसाधु च ।।6.64.11।।


एकस्यैव you alone, अभियाने set out, त्वया by you, यः that, हेतुः reason, कथितः adduced, तत्रापि by you, यत् that, अनुपपन्नम् illconceived असाधु च improper, ते to you, वक्ष्यामि will reveal.

"You have set out alone (for war) and the reason adduced by you is ill conceived and improper. I shall tell you."
येनपूर्वंजनस्थानेबहवोऽतिबलाहताः ।

राक्षसाराघवंतंत्वंकथमेकोजयिष्यसि ।।6.64.12।।


पूर्वम् in the past, जनस्थाने Janasthana, येन he who, अतिबलाः exceeding might, बहवः many, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, हताः killed, तम् him, राघवम् Raghava, त्वम् you, एकः single handed, कथम् how, जयिष्यसि won.

"How is it possible for you single handed to win Raghava of exceeding might, who killed many Rakshasas in the past at Janasthana?"
येपुरानिर्जितास्तेनजनस्थानेमहौजसः ।

राक्षसांस्तान्पुरेसर्वान्भीतानद्यापिपश्यसि ।।6.64.13।।


पुरा earlier, जनस्थाने at Janasthana, महौजसः highly energetic, ये those, निर्जिताः won, भीतान् scared, सर्वान् all, तान् राक्षसान् those Rakshasas, अद्यापि even now, पुरे earlier, पश्यसि look.

"Look! Those highly energetic Rakshasas, who were won by Rama at Janasthana are scared of him even now."
तंसिंहमिवसङ्क्रुद्धंरामंदशरथात्मजम् ।

सर्पंसुप्तमिवबुद्ध्यप्रबोधयितुमिच्छसि ।।6.64.14।।


सङ्क्रुद्धम् enraged, सिंहमिव like lion, दशरथात्मजम् Dasaratha's son, तंरामम् that Rama, सुप्तम् इव like sleeping, सर्पम् snake, बुद्ध्य knowingly, प्रबोधयितुम् to awaken, इच्छसि do you desire.

"Do you desire to awaken Rama, who is like an enraged lion knowingly, who is like a sleeping snake?"
ज्वलन्तंतेजसानित्यंक्रोधेन च दुरासदम् ।

कस्तंमृत्युमिवासह्यमासादयितुमर्हति ।।6.64.15।।


तेजसा burning, नित्यम् ever, ज्वलन्तम् burning, क्रोधेन in anger, दुरासदम् difficult to encounter, मृत्युमिव like spirit of death, असह्यम् unbearable, तम् him, कः who, आसादयितुम् approach, अर्हति be able.

"Who can dare to approach Rama, who is difficult to encounter, unbearable and burning in anger like the spirit of death."
संशयस्थमिदंसर्वंशत्रोःप्रतिसमासने ।

एकस्यगमनंतत्र न हिमेरोचतेभृशम् ।।6.64.16।।


शत्रोः enemy, प्रतिसमासने face to face, इदंसर्वम् all army, संशयस्थम् will be in danger, एकस्य going alone, तत्र there, गमनम् going, मे to me, भृशम् certainly, न रोचतेहि not desirable.

"Face to face with the enemy this total army will be in danger. You're going alone is certainly not desirable."
हीनार्थस्तुसमृद्धार्थंकोरिपुंप्राकृतंयथा ।

निश्चित्यजीवितत्यागेवशमानेतुमिच्छति ।।6.64.17।।


हीनार्थस्तु one who is weak, कः who, जीवितत्यागे sacrifice life, निश्चित्य determined, समृद्धार्थम् rich in resources, रिपुम् to the enemy, प्राकृतंयथा like a common enemy, वशम् submit, अनेतुम् to go several times, इच्छति desires.

"How can a weak person desire to go to the enemy who is rich in resources, determined to sacrifice his life several times and submit himself?"
यस्यनास्तिमनुष्येषुसदृशोराक्षसोत्तम ।

कथमाशंससेयोद्धुंतुल्येनेन्द्रविवस्वतोः ।।6.64.18।।


राक्षसोत्तम best of Rakshasas, यस्य his, सदृशः great, मनुष्येषु of all the human beings, नास्ति not, इन्द्रविवस्वतोः Indra and Sun god, तुल्येन equal, योद्धुम् in war, कथम् how, आशंससे enter into combat.

"O Best of Rakshasas! How would you enter into combat with one who is great among all human beings and while even Indra and Sun God are not equal to him in war?"
एवमुक्त्वातुसम्रब्दःकुम्भकर्णंमहोदरः ।

उवाचरक्षसांमध्येरावणंलोकरावणम् ।।6.64.19।।


महोदरः Mahodara, रक्षसाम् Rakshasas, मध्ये midst, सम्रब्दम् agitated, कुम्भकर्णम् to Kumbhakarna, एवम् in this way, उक्त्वा having spoken, लोकरावणम् one who makes people cry, रावणम् Ravana, उवाच replied.

Mahodara having spoken to agitated Kumbhakarna in the midst of Rakshasas in this way, submitted to Ravana, who makes people cry.
लब्ध्वापुनस्त्वंवैदेहींकिमर्थंसम्प्रजल्पसि ।

यदीच्छसितदासीतावशगातेभविष्यति ।।6.64.20।।


पुनस्तात् again, त्वम् you, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, लब्ध्वा having got, किम् why, सम्प्रजल्पसि talking so, इच्छसियदि desire so, तदा then, सीता Sita, ते you, वशगा submit to, भविष्यति will.

"Having got Vaidehi, why are you talking like that? Sita will submit to you if you desire."
दृष्टःकश्चदुपायोमेसीतोपस्थानकारकः ।

रुचितश्चेत्स्वयाबुध्याराक्षसेन्द्र तंशृणु ।।6.64.21।।


राक्षसेन्द्र king of Rakshasas, सीतपस्थानकारकः a way of bringing her round, कश्चित् see, उपायः means, मे to me, दृष्टः see, स्वया yourself, बुध्या knowing, रुचितःचेत् like it with your intellect, तम् you may, शृणु listen.

"O King of Rakshasas! A means of bringing her round is known to me. Listen, think over with your intellect."
अहंद्विजिह्वस्सम्ह्रादीकुम्भकर्णोवितर्दनः ।

पञ्चरामवधायैतेनिर्यान्त्वित्यवघोषय ।।6.64.22।।


अहम् I, द्विजिह्वः Dwijihva, सम्ह्रादी Samhradri, कुम्भकर्णः Kumbhakarna, वितर्दनः Vitardana, एते all these, पञ्च five, रामवधाय for killing Rama, निर्यान्तु decided, इति this, अवघोषय pronounce.

"You pronounce that I, Dwijihva, Samhradri, Kumbhakarna and Vitardana, five of us will go forth to kill Rama."
ततोगत्वावयंयुद्धंदास्यामस्तस्ययत्नतः ।

जेष्यामोयदितेशत्रून्नोपायैःकृत्यमस्तिनः ।।6.64.23।।


ततः thereafter, वयम् you, गत्वा proceeding, यत्नतः make effort, तस्य his, युद्धम् war, दास्यामः win over, ते to you, शत्रून् with enemy, जेष्यामःयदि if we win, नः no, उपायैः means, कृत्यम् to do any action, नास्ति will not be.

"Thereafter, proceeding forth we shall try to win your enemy. If we win, there will be no purpose for you to do any action."
अथजीवतिनश्शत्रुर्वयं च कृतसम्युगाः ।

ततस्तदभिपत्स्यामोमनसायत्समीक्षितम् ।।6.64.24।।


थ if, नः not, शत्रुः enemy, जीवति survives, कृतसम्युगाः in the combat, वयं च we too, ततः that, मनसा mind, यत् like that, समीक्षितम् will review, तदभिपत्स्यामः we will see.

"If our enemy survives in combat, we too will survive and review as we planned and see."
वयंयुद्धादिहेष्यामोरुधिरेणसमुक्षिताः ।

विदार्यस्वतनुंबाणैरामनामाङ्कितैश्शितैः ।।6.64.25।।


वयम् we, रामनामाङ्कितैः marked with Rama's name, बाणैः arrows, शितैः torn, स्वतनुम् our bodies, विदार्य cruelly, रुधिरेण blood, समुक्षिताः wounded, युद्धात् from war, इहे here, एष्यामः will come.

"Bathed in blood, wounded by the arrows marked with Rama's name, bodies torn cruelly we will come here from war."
भक्षितोराघवोऽस्माभिर्लक्ष्मणश्चेतिवादिनः ।

तवपादौग्रहीष्यामस्त्वंनःकामंप्रपूरय ।।6.64.26।।


अस्माभिः we too, राघवः Raghava, लक्ष्मणश्च Lakshmana's, भक्षितः devoured, इति thus, वादिनः saying, तव your, पादौ feet, ग्रहीष्यावः holding, त्वम् your, नः not, कामम् desires, प्रपूरय grant.

"We too will hold your feet saying 'Rama and Lakshmana have been devoured by us'. Then you will grant our desires."
ततोऽवघोषयपुरेगजस्कन्धेनपार्थिव ।

हतोरामस्सहभ्रात्राससैन्यइतिसर्वतः ।।6.64.27।।


पार्थिव ruler of the earth, ततः thereafter, ससैन्यः that army, रामः Rama, भ्रात्रासह accompanied by brother, हतः killed, इति here, पुरे city, सर्वतः all over, गजस्कन्धे mounted on elephant back, अवघोषय pronounce.

"Thereafter mounted on elephant backs all over the city will make a rakshasa pronounce that Rama accompanied by his brother are killed."
प्रीतोनामततोभूत्वाभृत्यानांत्वमरिन्दम ।

भोगांश्चपरिवारांश्चकामांश्चवसुदापय ।।6.64.28।।


अरिन्दम tamer of enemies, त्वम् you, प्रीतोनाम in the name of happiness, भूत्वा servants, ततः after that, भृत्यानाम् to the servants, भोगान् च items of enjoyment, परिवारांश्च to the companions, कामांश्च as per their desire, वसुदापय granting wealth

"O tamer of enemies! In the name of expression of happiness, thereafter gift items of enjoyment to the attendants, and companions and granting wealth as per their desire.
ततोमाल्यानिवासांसिवीराणामनुलेपनम् ।

पेयं च बहुयोधेभ्यस्स्वयं च मुदितःपिब ।।6.64.29।।


ततः thereafter, माल्यानि garland s, वीराणाम् warriors, अनुलेपनम् cosmetics, बहु many, योधेभ्यः give, पेयम् drinks, स्वयम् yourself, मुदितः happy, पिब drink.

"Thereafter give your warriors, garlands, cosmetics and many drinks and drink yourself happily."
ततोऽस्मिन् बहुलीभूतेकौलीनेसर्वतोगते ।

भक्षितस्ससुहृद्रामोराक्षसैरितिविश्रुते ।।6.64.30।।

प्रविश्याश्वास्यचापित्वंसीतांरहसिसान्त्वय ।

धनधान्यैश्चकामैश्चरत्नैश्चानांप्रलोभय ।।6.64.31।।


ततः thereafter, ससुहृत् Lakshmana and friends, रामः Rama, राक्षसैः Rakshasas, भक्षितः devoured, इति this, अस्मिन् other, बहुलीभूते spread, कौलीने sc and al, सर्वतोग e very where, विश्रुते widely, त्वम् you, प्रविश्य entering, सीताम् to Sita, आश्वास्य consoling, रहसि privately, सान्त्वय restoring confidence, एनाम् in that way, धनधान्यैश्च grain and wealth, कामैश्च tempting, रत्नैश्च gems, प्रलोभय conciliate.

Thereafter, when the scandal that Rama and Lakshmana with all his friends have been devoured is widely spread everywhere, approaching Sita privately, restoring confidence and consoling her, tempt her with offering wealth, grain and gems and conciliate.
अनयोपधयाराजन् भयशोकानुबन्धया ।

अकामात्वद्वशंसीतानष्टनाथाभविष्यति ।।6.64.32।।


राजन् king, भयशोकानुबन्धया overtaken by fear and sorrow, अनया helpless, उपधया by conjuring, नष्टनाथाः having lost husband, सीता Sita, अकामा having no desire, त्वद्वशम् submit to you, भविष्यति will be

"O King! By conjuring her like this, helpless Sita overtaken by fear and sorrow having lost her husband will submit to you in spite of no desire to you."
ञ्जनीयम्हिभर्तारंविनष्टमवगम्यसा ।

नैराश्यात् स्त्रीलघुत्वाच्चत्वद्वशंप्रतिपत्स्यते ।।6.64.33।।


सा she, रञ्जनीयम् charming, भर्तारम् husband, विनष्टम् ceased, अवगम्य thinking, नैराश्यात् with no alternative, स्त्रीलघुत्वाच्च fickle being woman, त्वद्वशम् accept, प्रतिपत्स्यते your dependence.

"Her charming husband ceased to live and thinking of no alternate, being a fickle woman, will accept your dependence."
सापुरासुखसम्वृद्धासुखार्हादुःखकर्शिता ।

त्वय्यधीनंसुखंज्ञात्वासर्वथोगमिष्यति ।।6.64.34।।


पुरा in the past, सुखसम्वृद्धा grew up with much comfort, सुखार्हा deserved felicity, दुःखकर्शिता tormented with grief, सा she, सुखम् happiness, त्वयि you alone, अधीनम् desperate, ज्ञात्वा knowing, सर्वधा always, उपगमिष्यति will submit to your will.

"That Sita having grown up in much comfort, deserved felicity. Tormented with grief, desperate, depending on you alone for happiness, will submit to you completely."
एतत्सुनीतंममदर्शनेनरामंहिदृष्टवैभवेदनर्धः ।

इहैवतेसेत्स्यतिमोत्सुकोभूर्महानयुद्धेनसुखस्यलाभः ।।6.64.35।।


एतत् this, मम to me, दर्शने by witnessing, सुनीतम् best course, रामम् Rama, दृष्टवैव as soon as you see, अनर्थः meaningless, भवेत् हि will be, ते to you, अयुद्धेन war, सुखस्य best, महान् great, लाभः gain, इहैव from here, सेत्स्यति accrue, उत्सुकः eager, माभूः do not be.

"To me this is the best course. As soon as you see Rama, do not be eager for war. It is meaningless. Great gain will accrue to you from here."
अदृष्टसैन्योह्यनवाप्तसंशयोरिपूनयुद्धेनजयन् जनाधिप ।

यशश्चपुण्यं च महन्महीपतेश्रशियं च कीर्तिं च चिरं ।।6.64.36।।


जनाधिप Lord of the people, अनष्टसैन्यः without any loss of army, अनवाप्तसंशयः without facing any danger, अयुद्धेन without war, रिपून् enemy, जयन् win, महीपतिः king of the earth, महत् great, यशश्च fame, पुण्यं च and merit, श्रियं च prosperity, कीर्तिं च indeed, चिरम् ever, अश्नुते will attain.

"O Lord of the people! If a king conquers his enemy without any loss of army, without facing any dangerand without war, such a mighty ruler of the earth will indeed earn fame and merit and attain prosperity."
।।इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेचतुष्षष्टितमस्सर्गः।।
