[Mahodara suggests a plan to Ravana to win Rama without a fight.]

taduktamatikāyasyabalinōbāhuśālinaḥ .

kumbhakarṇasyavacanaṅśrutvōvācamahōdaraḥ ।।6.64.1।।


atikāyasya of massive body, balinaḥ mighty, bāhuśālinaḥ of wellformed shoulders, kumbhakarṇasya Kumbhakarna's, uktam spoken, tat that, vacanam words, ākarṇya having heard, mahōdaraḥ Mahodara, uvāca said.

Hearing the words of mighty Kumbhakarna, of massive body and round arms Mahodara said.
kumbhakarṇakulējātōdhṛṣṭaḥprākṛtadarśanaḥ .

avaliptō na śaknōṣikṛtyaṅsarvatravēditum ।।6.64.2।।


kumbhakarṇa Kumbhakarna, kulē noble, jātaḥ race, dhṛṣṭaḥ seeing, prākṛtadarśanaḥ insolent, avaliptaḥ of low intellect, sarvatra all aspects kṛtyam actions, vēditum knowledge, naśaknōṣi not know what should be done.

"Kumbhakarna! Although you are born of noble race, you are insolent, seeing your low intellect in all aspects you have no knowledge of what should be done or not to be done."
sthānaṅvṛddhiṅ ca hāni ca dēśakālavibhāgavit .

ātmanaścaparēṣāṅ ca budhyatērākṣasarṣabhaḥ ।।6.64.4।।


dēśakālavibhāgavit conversant with rules of time and place, rākṣasarṣabhaḥ bull among Rakshasas, ātmanaḥ ca his own, parēṣāṅ ca enemies also, sthānam place, vṛddhiṅ ca progress, hāniṅ ca and decline also, budhyatē knows.

"Ravana, a bull among Rakshasas is conversant with rules of time and place and knows his own enemies, his progress and decline also."
yattuśakyaṅbalavatākartuṅprākṛtabuddhinā .

anupāsitavṛddhēnakaḥkuryāttādṛśaṅnaraḥ ।।6.64.5।।


balavatā strong, prākṛtabuddhinā of unsophisticated intellect, anupāsitavṛddhēna who is progressive, yat such, aśakyam not possible, tādṛśam knower of everything, kaḥ how, naraḥ a person, kuryāt will do.

" A strong person of unsophisticated intellect, who is progressive, a knower of everything will do such a task which is not possible to do?"
yāṅstudharmārthakāmāṅstvaṅbravīṣipṛthagāśrayān .

avabōddhuṅsvabhāvētānnahilakṣaṇamastitān ।।6.64.6।।


tvam you, yān such, dharmārthakāmān virtue worldly gain and sensuous pleasures, pṛthagāśrayān separately as incompatible, bravīṣi told, tān such qualities, svabhāvēna in their true nature, avabōddhum known, lakṣaṇam qualities, nāstihi not exist.

"The virtues, worldly gain and sensuous pleasures give results separately as you said. They are incompatible with what you said and that it is its nature you said. what is the proof?"
karmacaivahisarvēṣāṅkāraṇānāṅprayōjakam .

śrēyaḥpāpīyasāṅcātraphalaṅbhavatikarmaṇām ।।6.64.7।।


sarvēṣām for all, kāraṇānām means, karmacai action alone, prayōjakaṅhi happiness, atra and that, pāpīyasām sinful, karmaṇāṅ ca actions also, śrēyaḥ good, phalam result, bhavati will accrue.

" Actions alone are the means of happiness. Being so how can sinful actions accrue good results?"
niśśrēyasaphalāvēvadharmārthāvitarāvapi .

adharmānarthayōḥprāptiḥphalaṅ ca pratyavāyikam ।।6.64.8।।


dharmārthau virtues and worldly pleasures, itarauapi even other, niśśrēyasaphalauēva only give benefit, adharmānarthayōḥ if done in unrighteous manner with disinterest, pratyavāyikam other than prosperity, phalaṅ ca the result also, prāptam will give.

" All virtues and worldly pleasures and even otherwise give only benefit. But if done with disinterest and unrighteousness it can give a result which is other than prosperity."
aihalaukikapārakyaṅkarmapumbhirniṣēvyatē .

karmāṇyapitukalyānilabhatēkāmamāsthitaḥ ।।6.64.9।।


pumbhiḥ men, aihalaukikapārakyam the fruit of actions in this world and the other world, karma action, niṣēvyatē remains, kāmam pleasure seeking, āsthitaḥ will reap,kalyāni blessings, karmāṇyapitu devoted to actions, labhatē attain pleasures.

" All beings reap the fruit of their actions in this world as well as in other worlds. He, who remains to be pleasure seeking, devoted to actions will receive blessings and attain pleasures in this life only (not here after)."
tatrakluptamidaṅrājñāhṛdikāryaṅmataṅ ca naḥ .

śatrauhisāhasaṅyatsyātkimivātrāpanīyatē ।।6.64.10।।


tatra then, rājñā king, hṛdi in heart, idam these, kāryam actions, kṛtam done, naḥ ca also approved by us, matam opinion, śatrau enemy, yat such, sāhasam courageous, tat that action, atra and then, kim apanīyatē w hat is wrong in that.

" At that time the king intended in his heart (to abduct Sita), and we approved his action, and it was done. What is wrong in doing such a courageous action against an enemy?"
ēkasyaivābhiyānētuhēturyaḥkathitastvayā .

tatrāpyanupapannaṅtēvakṣyāmiyadasādhu ca ।।6.64.11।।


ēkasyaiva you alone, abhiyānē set out, tvayā by you, yaḥ that, hētuḥ reason, kathitaḥ adduced, tatrāpi by you, yat that, anupapannam illconceived asādhu ca improper, tē to you, vakṣyāmi will reveal.

"You have set out alone (for war) and the reason adduced by you is ill conceived and improper. I shall tell you."
yēnapūrvaṅjanasthānēbahavō.tibalāhatāḥ .

rākṣasārāghavaṅtaṅtvaṅkathamēkōjayiṣyasi ।।6.64.12।।


pūrvam in the past, janasthānē Janasthana, yēna he who, atibalāḥ exceeding might, bahavaḥ many, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, hatāḥ killed, tam him, rāghavam Raghava, tvam you, ēkaḥ single handed, katham how, jayiṣyasi won.

"How is it possible for you single handed to win Raghava of exceeding might, who killed many Rakshasas in the past at Janasthana?"
yēpurānirjitāstēnajanasthānēmahaujasaḥ .

rākṣasāṅstānpurēsarvānbhītānadyāpipaśyasi ।।6.64.13।।


purā earlier, janasthānē at Janasthana, mahaujasaḥ highly energetic, yē those, nirjitāḥ won, bhītān scared, sarvān all, tān rākṣasān those Rakshasas, adyāpi even now, purē earlier, paśyasi look.

"Look! Those highly energetic Rakshasas, who were won by Rama at Janasthana are scared of him even now."
taṅsiṅhamivasaṅkruddhaṅrāmaṅdaśarathātmajam .

sarpaṅsuptamivabuddhyaprabōdhayitumicchasi ।।6.64.14।।


saṅkruddham enraged, siṅhamiva like lion, daśarathātmajam Dasaratha's son, taṅrāmam that Rama, suptam iva like sleeping, sarpam snake, buddhya knowingly, prabōdhayitum to awaken, icchasi do you desire.

"Do you desire to awaken Rama, who is like an enraged lion knowingly, who is like a sleeping snake?"
jvalantaṅtējasānityaṅkrōdhēna ca durāsadam .

kastaṅmṛtyumivāsahyamāsādayitumarhati ।।6.64.15।।


tējasā burning, nityam ever, jvalantam burning, krōdhēna in anger, durāsadam difficult to encounter, mṛtyumiva like spirit of death, asahyam unbearable, tam him, kaḥ who, āsādayitum approach, arhati be able.

"Who can dare to approach Rama, who is difficult to encounter, unbearable and burning in anger like the spirit of death."
saṅśayasthamidaṅsarvaṅśatrōḥpratisamāsanē .

ēkasyagamanaṅtatra na himērōcatēbhṛśam ।।6.64.16।।


śatrōḥ enemy, pratisamāsanē face to face, idaṅsarvam all army, saṅśayastham will be in danger, ēkasya going alone, tatra there, gamanam going, mē to me, bhṛśam certainly, na rōcatēhi not desirable.

"Face to face with the enemy this total army will be in danger. You're going alone is certainly not desirable."
hīnārthastusamṛddhārthaṅkōripuṅprākṛtaṅyathā .

niścityajīvitatyāgēvaśamānētumicchati ।।6.64.17।।


hīnārthastu one who is weak, kaḥ who, jīvitatyāgē sacrifice life, niścitya determined, samṛddhārtham rich in resources, ripum to the enemy, prākṛtaṅyathā like a common enemy, vaśam submit, anētum to go several times, icchati desires.

"How can a weak person desire to go to the enemy who is rich in resources, determined to sacrifice his life several times and submit himself?"
yasyanāstimanuṣyēṣusadṛśōrākṣasōttama .

kathamāśaṅsasēyōddhuṅtulyēnēndravivasvatōḥ ।।6.64.18।।


rākṣasōttama best of Rakshasas, yasya his, sadṛśaḥ great, manuṣyēṣu of all the human beings, nāsti not, indravivasvatōḥ Indra and Sun god, tulyēna equal, yōddhum in war, katham how, āśaṅsasē enter into combat.

"O Best of Rakshasas! How would you enter into combat with one who is great among all human beings and while even Indra and Sun God are not equal to him in war?"
ēvamuktvātusamrabdaḥkumbhakarṇaṅmahōdaraḥ .

uvācarakṣasāṅmadhyērāvaṇaṅlōkarāvaṇam ।।6.64.19।।


mahōdaraḥ Mahodara, rakṣasām Rakshasas, madhyē midst, samrabdam agitated, kumbhakarṇam to Kumbhakarna, ēvam in this way, uktvā having spoken, lōkarāvaṇam one who makes people cry, rāvaṇam Ravana, uvāca replied.

Mahodara having spoken to agitated Kumbhakarna in the midst of Rakshasas in this way, submitted to Ravana, who makes people cry.
labdhvāpunastvaṅvaidēhīṅkimarthaṅsamprajalpasi .

yadīcchasitadāsītāvaśagātēbhaviṣyati ।।6.64.20।।


punastāt again, tvam you, vaidēhīm Vaidehi, labdhvā having got, kim why, samprajalpasi talking so, icchasiyadi desire so, tadā then, sītā Sita, tē you, vaśagā submit to, bhaviṣyati will.

"Having got Vaidehi, why are you talking like that? Sita will submit to you if you desire."
dṛṣṭaḥkaścadupāyōmēsītōpasthānakārakaḥ .

rucitaścētsvayābudhyārākṣasēndra taṅśṛṇu ।।6.64.21।।


rākṣasēndra king of Rakshasas, sītapasthānakārakaḥ a way of bringing her round, kaścit see, upāyaḥ means, mē to me, dṛṣṭaḥ see, svayā yourself, budhyā knowing, rucitaḥcēt like it with your intellect, tam you may, śṛṇu listen.

"O King of Rakshasas! A means of bringing her round is known to me. Listen, think over with your intellect."
ahaṅdvijihvassamhrādīkumbhakarṇōvitardanaḥ .

pañcarāmavadhāyaitēniryāntvityavaghōṣaya ।।6.64.22।।


aham I, dvijihvaḥ Dwijihva, samhrādī Samhradri, kumbhakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, vitardanaḥ Vitardana, ētē all these, pañca five, rāmavadhāya for killing Rama, niryāntu decided, iti this, avaghōṣaya pronounce.

"You pronounce that I, Dwijihva, Samhradri, Kumbhakarna and Vitardana, five of us will go forth to kill Rama."
tatōgatvāvayaṅyuddhaṅdāsyāmastasyayatnataḥ .

jēṣyāmōyaditēśatrūnnōpāyaiḥkṛtyamastinaḥ ।।6.64.23।।


tataḥ thereafter, vayam you, gatvā proceeding, yatnataḥ make effort, tasya his, yuddham war, dāsyāmaḥ win over, tē to you, śatrūn with enemy, jēṣyāmaḥyadi if we win, naḥ no, upāyaiḥ means, kṛtyam to do any action, nāsti will not be.

"Thereafter, proceeding forth we shall try to win your enemy. If we win, there will be no purpose for you to do any action."
athajīvatinaśśatrurvayaṅ ca kṛtasamyugāḥ .

tatastadabhipatsyāmōmanasāyatsamīkṣitam ।।6.64.24।।


tha if, naḥ not, śatruḥ enemy, jīvati survives, kṛtasamyugāḥ in the combat, vayaṅ ca we too, tataḥ that, manasā mind, yat like that, samīkṣitam will review, tadabhipatsyāmaḥ we will see.

"If our enemy survives in combat, we too will survive and review as we planned and see."
vayaṅyuddhādihēṣyāmōrudhirēṇasamukṣitāḥ .

vidāryasvatanuṅbāṇairāmanāmāṅkitaiśśitaiḥ ।।6.64.25।।


vayam we, rāmanāmāṅkitaiḥ marked with Rama's name, bāṇaiḥ arrows, śitaiḥ torn, svatanum our bodies, vidārya cruelly, rudhirēṇa blood, samukṣitāḥ wounded, yuddhāt from war, ihē here, ēṣyāmaḥ will come.

"Bathed in blood, wounded by the arrows marked with Rama's name, bodies torn cruelly we will come here from war."
bhakṣitōrāghavō.smābhirlakṣmaṇaścētivādinaḥ .

tavapādaugrahīṣyāmastvaṅnaḥkāmaṅprapūraya ।।6.64.26।।


asmābhiḥ we too, rāghavaḥ Raghava, lakṣmaṇaśca Lakshmana's, bhakṣitaḥ devoured, iti thus, vādinaḥ saying, tava your, pādau feet, grahīṣyāvaḥ holding, tvam your, naḥ not, kāmam desires, prapūraya grant.

"We too will hold your feet saying 'Rama and Lakshmana have been devoured by us'. Then you will grant our desires."
tatō.vaghōṣayapurēgajaskandhēnapārthiva .

hatōrāmassahabhrātrāsasainyaitisarvataḥ ।।6.64.27।।


pārthiva ruler of the earth, tataḥ thereafter, sasainyaḥ that army, rāmaḥ Rama, bhrātrāsaha accompanied by brother, hataḥ killed, iti here, purē city, sarvataḥ all over, gajaskandhē mounted on elephant back, avaghōṣaya pronounce.

"Thereafter mounted on elephant backs all over the city will make a rakshasa pronounce that Rama accompanied by his brother are killed."
prītōnāmatatōbhūtvābhṛtyānāṅtvamarindama .

bhōgāṅścaparivārāṅścakāmāṅścavasudāpaya ।।6.64.28।।


arindama tamer of enemies, tvam you, prītōnāma in the name of happiness, bhūtvā servants, tataḥ after that, bhṛtyānām to the servants, bhōgān ca items of enjoyment, parivārāṅśca to the companions, kāmāṅśca as per their desire, vasudāpaya granting wealth

"O tamer of enemies! In the name of expression of happiness, thereafter gift items of enjoyment to the attendants, and companions and granting wealth as per their desire.
tatōmālyānivāsāṅsivīrāṇāmanulēpanam .

pēyaṅ ca bahuyōdhēbhyassvayaṅ ca muditaḥpiba ।।6.64.29।।


tataḥ thereafter, mālyāni garland s, vīrāṇām warriors, anulēpanam cosmetics, bahu many, yōdhēbhyaḥ give, pēyam drinks, svayam yourself, muditaḥ happy, piba drink.

"Thereafter give your warriors, garlands, cosmetics and many drinks and drink yourself happily."
tatō.smin bahulībhūtēkaulīnēsarvatōgatē .

bhakṣitassasuhṛdrāmōrākṣasairitiviśrutē ।।6.64.30।।

praviśyāśvāsyacāpitvaṅsītāṅrahasisāntvaya .

dhanadhānyaiścakāmaiścaratnaiścānāṅpralōbhaya ।।6.64.31।।


tataḥ thereafter, sasuhṛt Lakshmana and friends, rāmaḥ Rama, rākṣasaiḥ Rakshasas, bhakṣitaḥ devoured, iti this, asmin other, bahulībhūtē spread, kaulīnē sc and al, sarvatōga e very where, viśrutē widely, tvam you, praviśya entering, sītām to Sita, āśvāsya consoling, rahasi privately, sāntvaya restoring confidence, ēnām in that way, dhanadhānyaiśca grain and wealth, kāmaiśca tempting, ratnaiśca gems, pralōbhaya conciliate.

Thereafter, when the scandal that Rama and Lakshmana with all his friends have been devoured is widely spread everywhere, approaching Sita privately, restoring confidence and consoling her, tempt her with offering wealth, grain and gems and conciliate.
anayōpadhayārājan bhayaśōkānubandhayā .

akāmātvadvaśaṅsītānaṣṭanāthābhaviṣyati ।।6.64.32।।


rājan king, bhayaśōkānubandhayā overtaken by fear and sorrow, anayā helpless, upadhayā by conjuring, naṣṭanāthāḥ having lost husband, sītā Sita, akāmā having no desire, tvadvaśam submit to you, bhaviṣyati will be

"O King! By conjuring her like this, helpless Sita overtaken by fear and sorrow having lost her husband will submit to you in spite of no desire to you."
ñjanīyamhibhartāraṅvinaṣṭamavagamyasā .

nairāśyāt strīlaghutvāccatvadvaśaṅpratipatsyatē ।।6.64.33।।


sā she, rañjanīyam charming, bhartāram husband, vinaṣṭam ceased, avagamya thinking, nairāśyāt with no alternative, strīlaghutvācca fickle being woman, tvadvaśam accept, pratipatsyatē your dependence.

"Her charming husband ceased to live and thinking of no alternate, being a fickle woman, will accept your dependence."
sāpurāsukhasamvṛddhāsukhārhāduḥkhakarśitā .

tvayyadhīnaṅsukhaṅjñātvāsarvathōgamiṣyati ।।6.64.34।।


purā in the past, sukhasamvṛddhā grew up with much comfort, sukhārhā deserved felicity, duḥkhakarśitā tormented with grief, sā she, sukham happiness, tvayi you alone, adhīnam desperate, jñātvā knowing, sarvadhā always, upagamiṣyati will submit to your will.

"That Sita having grown up in much comfort, deserved felicity. Tormented with grief, desperate, depending on you alone for happiness, will submit to you completely."
ētatsunītaṅmamadarśanēnarāmaṅhidṛṣṭavaibhavēdanardhaḥ .

ihaivatēsētsyatimōtsukōbhūrmahānayuddhēnasukhasyalābhaḥ ।।6.64.35।।


ētat this, mama to me, darśanē by witnessing, sunītam best course, rāmam Rama, dṛṣṭavaiva as soon as you see, anarthaḥ meaningless, bhavēt hi will be, tē to you, ayuddhēna war, sukhasya best, mahān great, lābhaḥ gain, ihaiva from here, sētsyati accrue, utsukaḥ eager, mābhūḥ do not be.

"To me this is the best course. As soon as you see Rama, do not be eager for war. It is meaningless. Great gain will accrue to you from here."
adṛṣṭasainyōhyanavāptasaṅśayōripūnayuddhēnajayan janādhipa .

yaśaścapuṇyaṅ ca mahanmahīpatēśraśiyaṅ ca kīrtiṅ ca ciraṅ ।।6.64.36।।


janādhipa Lord of the people, anaṣṭasainyaḥ without any loss of army, anavāptasaṅśayaḥ without facing any danger, ayuddhēna without war, ripūn enemy, jayan win, mahīpatiḥ king of the earth, mahat great, yaśaśca fame, puṇyaṅ ca and merit, śriyaṅ ca prosperity, kīrtiṅ ca indeed, ciram ever, aśnutē will attain.

"O Lord of the people! If a king conquers his enemy without any loss of army, without facing any dangerand without war, such a mighty ruler of the earth will indeed earn fame and merit and attain prosperity."
।।ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēcatuṣṣaṣṭitamassargaḥ।।
