Sloka & Translation

[ Angada restores courage and confidence of Vanaras who feared Kumbhakarna and were fleeing from the battlefield. Destruction of some Vanaras at the hand s of Kumbhakarna.]

sa laṅghayitvāprākāraṅgirikūṭōpamōmahān .

niryayaunagarāttūrṇaṅkumbhakarṇōmahābalaḥ ।।6.66.1।।

girikūṭōpamaḥ who resembled peak of mountain, mahān gigantic, mahābalaḥ mighty, saḥkumbhakarṇa: Kumbhakarna, prākāraṅ boundary, laṅghayitvā having crossed, tūrṇam swiftly, nagarāt from the city, niryayau roared.

Mighty Kumbhakarna, a gigantic one, resembling a mountain peak, having swiftly crossed over the boundary of the city roared.

nanāda ca mahānādaṅsamudramabhinādayan .

vijayannivanirghātanvidhamannivaparvatān ।।6.66.2।।

nirghātān bringing out loud noise,vijayatri as if proclaiming victory, parvatān mountains, vidhaman iva like breaking, mahānādam great sound, samudram ocean, abhinādayan reverberate, nādayana roared.

Kumbhakarna roared making loud noises as if proclaiming victory, like the breaking of mountains and reverberating of ocean.

tamavadhyaṅmaghavatāyamēnavaruṇēnavā .

prēkṣyabhīmākṣamāyāntaṅvānarāvipradudruvuḥ ।।6.66.3।।

maghavatā by Indra, yamēnaby Yama, varuṇēnavā or even Varuna, avadhyam not be killed, bhīmākṣam with frightening eyes, tam him, prēkṣya observing, vānarāḥ the Vanaras, vipradudruvuḥ ran in fear.

Observing that rakshasa with frightening eyes, who could not be killed by Indra or Yama or even by Varuna coming towards them the vanaras ran in fear.

tāṅstuvipradrutān dṛṣṭavārājaputrō.ṅgadō.bravīt .

nalaṅnīlaṅgavākṣaṅ ca kumudaṅ ca mahābalam ।।6.66.4।।

vipradrutān running in fear, tān them, nalam Nala, nīlam Nila, gavākṣaṅ ca and Gavaksha, mahābalam Mahabala, kumudam Kumuda, dṛṣṭavā seeing, rājaputraḥ prince, aṅgadaḥAngada, abravīt spoke

Seeing the Vanaras running in fear, Angada spoke to Nala, Nila, Gavaksha, Mahabala and Kumuda.

ātmānamatravismṛtyavīryāṇyabhijanāni ca .

kvagacchatabhayatrastāḥprākṛtāharayōyathā ।।6.66.5।।

ātmānam yourself, atra there, vīryāṇi warriors, abhijanāni ca not knowing, vismṛtya forgetting, prākṛtāḥ by nature, harayaḥyathā like the Vanaras, bhayatrastāḥ fearing, kva where, gacchata are you going.

"Forgetting yourself, that you are warriors, not knowing by nature, being Vanaras where are you going?"

sādhusaumyā nivartadhvaṅkiprāṇānparirakṣatha .

nālaṅyuddhāyavairakṣōmahatīyaṅbibhīṣakā ।।6.66.6।।

saumyāḥ good, sādhu modest, nivartadhvam return, prāṇān life, kim why, parirakṣatha protecting, rakṣaḥ Rakshasa, yuddhāya in war, nālam not capable facing, iyam this, mahatī great, bibhīṣikā who can create fear.

"O good Vanaras! You are modest. Return. Why are you protecting your life? This Rakshasa is not capable of facing war. He can create only fear."

mahatīmuthatitāmēnāṅrākṣasānāṅbibhīṣikām .

vikramādvidhamiṣyāmōnivartadhvaṅplavaṅgamāḥ ।।6.66.7।।

plavaṅgamāḥ Vanaras, rākṣasānām Rakshasas, uthatitām dispel, mahatīm huge, ēnāṅbibhīṣikām this nightmare, vikramāt with our power, vidhamiṣyāmaḥ kill them, nivartadhvam come back.

"O Vanaras! We will dispel this huge rakshasa, a nightmare with our power. Come back."

kṛcchrēṇatusamāśvasyasaṅgamya ca tatastataḥ .

vṛkṣādrihastāharayassampratasthūraṇājiram ।।6.66.8।।

harayaḥ Vanaras, kṛcchrēṇa from distress, samāśvasya getting over fear, tatastataḥ from here and there, saṅgamya getting together, vṛkṣān trees, hastā by hand, raṇājiram to battlefield, sampratasthuḥ proceeded.

Overcoming fear, the Vanaras getting together from here and there holding trees by hand, proceeded to the battlefield.

tēnivṛtyatusaṅkṛddhāḥkumbhakarṇaṅvanaukasaḥ .

nirjaghnuḥparamakruddhāssamadāivakuñjarāḥ ।।6.66.9।।

tē those, vanaukasaḥ forest rangers, nivṛtya turning back, saṅkṛddāḥ to hit, paramakruddhāḥ extremely angry, samadāḥ who were determined, kuñcarāḥiva like elephants in rut, kumbhakarṇam at Kumbhakarna, nirjaghnuḥ to vanquish him.

Those forest rangers who were extremely enraged turned back to hit, determined like the elephants in rut went to vanquish Kumbhakarna.

prāṅśubhirgiriśṛṅgaiścaśilābhiścamahābalaḥ .

pādapaiḥpuṣpitāgraiścahanyamānō na kampatē ।।6.66.10।।

śubhiḥ lofty, giriśṛṅgaiśca mountain peaks, śilābhiśca rocks also, puṣṭitāgraiḥ trees with blossoms on top tops, pādapaiḥ trees, hanyamānaḥ though hit, mahābalaḥ Kumbhakarna, na kampatē not shaken.

Though Kumbhakarna was hit with lofty mountain peaks and trees with blossoms at crests, he was not shaken.

tasyagātrēṣupatitābhidyantēśataśaśśilāḥ .

pādapāḥpuṣpitāgrāścabhagnāḥpēturmahītalē ।।6.66.11।।

tasya his, gātrēṣu limbs, patitāḥfallen, bahavaḥ many, śilāḥ rocks, bhidyantē were broken, puṣpitāgrāśca even the treetops with blossoms, pādapāḥ trees, bhagnāḥ broken, mahītalē fell on the ground, pētuḥ shattered.

Fallen on his limbs many rocks got broken, even the treetops with blossoms were broken and fell on the ground.

sō.pisainyānisaṅkruddhōvānarāṇāṅmahaujasām .

mamanthaparamāyattōvanānyagnirivōtthitaḥ ।।6.66.12।।

saḥapi he also, saṅkruddhaḥ enraged, paramāyattaḥ the great, utthitaḥ burst, agni: fire, vanānīva forest, mahaujasām endowed with extraordinary vigour, vānarāṇām Vanaras, sainyāni army, mamantha to destroy.

Enraged Kumbhakarna began to destroy Vanaras endowed with extraordinary vigour, just as great forest fire burns the forest.

lōhitārdrāstubahavaśśēratēvānararṣabhāḥ .

nirastāṅpatitābhūmautāmrapuṣpāivadrumāḥ ।।6.66.13।।

bahavaḥ many, vānararṣabhāḥ bulls among Vanaras, lōhitārdrā: trees with red flowers on top, nirastāḥ tossed, bhūmau on the ground, patitāḥ fallen, tāmrapuṣpāḥ red flowers, drumāḥyathā like trees lay in blood.

Many bulls among the Vanaras lay on the ground like trees with red flowers on top tossed and fallen on the ground.

laṅghayantaḥpradhāvantōvānarānāvalōkayan .

kēcitsamudrēpatitāḥkēcidgaganamāsthitāḥ ।।6.66.14।।

vānarāḥ Vanaras, laṅghayantaḥ leaping, pradhāvantaḥ flying, nāvalōkayan not turning back to see, kēcit indeed, samudrē ocean, patitāḥ dropped, kēcit some, gaganam space, āsthitāḥ flew.

The Vanaras leapt without looking back. Indeed, some dropped into the ocean, and some flew into space.

vadhyamānāstutēvīrārākṣasēna ca līlayā .

sāgaraṅyēnatētīrṇāḥpathātēnadudruvuḥ ।।6.66.15।।

rākṣasēna by Rakshasas, līlayā struck by, vadhyamānāḥ struck by, tēvīrāḥ those heroes, yēnapathā by the path, sāgaram ocean, tīrṇāḥ crossed, pathātēna by the same path, dudruvuḥ ran.

Struck by Rakshasa, the Vanaras ran in the same path crossing the ocean (by which they came).

tēsthalānitadānimnaṅvivarṇamānābhayāt .

ṛkṣāvṛkṣān samārūḍhāḥkēcitparvatamāśritāḥ ।।6.66.16।।

tadā then, bhayāt out of fear, vivarṇavadanāḥ pale countenance, tē they, sthalāni location, nimnam plains, ṛkṣāḥ Bears, vṛkṣān trees, samārūḍhāḥ climbed up, kēcit some, parvatam mountains, āśritāḥ sought resort.

Out of fear the vanaras rushed to plains with pale countenance, some climbed up mountains and bears climbed up trees.

mamajjurarṇavēkēcidguhāḥkēcitsamāśritāḥ .

nipētuḥkēcidaparēkēcinnaivāvatasthirē ।।6.66.17।।

kēcidbhūmaunipatitāḥkēcitsuptāmṛtāiva .

kēcit some, arṇavē ocean, mamajjuḥ drowned, kēcit some, guhāḥ caves, samāśritāḥ took shelter, aparēkēcit and some others, nipētuḥ not knowing anything, kēcit some, naivaavatasthirē sat down, kēcit some, bhūmau on the ground, nipatitāḥ fallen, kēcit some, mṛtāḥ iva as if deadsuptāḥ slept.

Some drowned in the ocean, some entered into the caves, some others not knowing what to do sat down and others fell on the ground and some slept as if dead.

tānsamīkṣyāṅgadōbhagnānvānarānidamabravīt ।।6.66.18।।

avatiṣṭhatayudhyāmōnivartadhvaṅplavaṅgamāḥ .

aṅgadaḥAngada, bhagnān routed, tān them, vānarān Vanaras, samīkṣya observing, idam thus, abravīt spoke, plavaṅgamāḥ to the monkeys, avatiṣṭhata stay, nivartadhvam return, yudhyāmaḥ will fight.

Seeing the monkeys routed, Angada spoke, 'Stay, return back. We will fight'

bhagnānāṅvō na paśyāmiparigamyamahīmimām ।।6.66.19।।

sthānaṅsarvēnivartadhvaṅkiṅprāṇān parirakṣatha .

imām this, mahīm globe, parikramya go round, bhagnānām routed, vaḥ or, sthānam place, na paśyāmi not see, sarvē all, nivartadhvam return, prāṇān life, kim why, parirakṣatha refuge.

"I do not see any refuge for you even if you go round the globe. All of you return back. Why do you preserve life?"

nirāyudhānāṅdravatāmasaṅgagatipauruṣāḥ ।।6.66.20।।

dārāhyupahasiṣyanti sa vaighātastujīvatām .

asaṅgagatipauruṣāḥ whose valour can't be challenged, nirāyudhānām abandoning weapons, dravatām run away, dārāḥ wives, upahasiṣyanti will ridicule, jīvatām life, saḥ for those, ghātaḥvai indeed more than death.

"Monkeys! Your valour can't be challenged. If you run away for life abandoning weapons even your wives will ridicule you. That is more than death."

kulēṣujātāssarvēsmavistīrṇēṣumahatsu ca ।।6.66.21।।

kvagacchatabhayatrastāḥharayaḥprākṛtāyathā .

anāryāḥkhaluyadbhītāstyaktvāvīryaṅpradhāvata ।।6.66.22।।

sarvē all, vistīrṇēṣu widely spread, mahatsu ca noble also, kulēṣu clan, jātāḥsma born into, prākṛtāḥ ordinary, harayaḥyathā monkeys like, bhayatrastāḥ in fear, kva why, gacchata go, vīryam valour, tyaktvā giving up, bhītāḥ terrified, yat as if, pradhāvata running away, anāryāḥkhalu not worthy of.

"You are born in noble families, and are widely spread. As such why are you running away like ordinary monkeys as if terrified giving up your valour. It is not worthy of you."

vikatthanānivōyāni tadāvaijanasaṅsadi .

tānivaḥkvanuyātānisōdagrāṇima hitāni ca ।।6.66.23।।

yāni earlier, janasaṅsadi in assembly of people, vaḥ or else, sōdagrāṇi made vigorous statements, mahānti ca acclaimed highly, yātāni such you, vikatthanāni self-praise, vaḥ such you, all that, kva where, gatāni has it gone.

"Earlier in the assembly of people you made vigorous statements and acclaimed yourselves highly with self-praise. Where has it gone?"

bhīrupravādāśśrūyantēyastujīvatidhikkṛtaḥ .

mārgassatpuruṣairjaṣṭaḥsēvyatāṅtyajyatāṅbhayam ।।6.66.24।।

yaḥ he who, dhikkṛtaḥ having been defeated, jīvati lives, bhīrōḥ timid, pravādāḥ will say, śrūyantē will tell, satpuruṣaiḥ good people, juṣṭaḥ resorting to, mārgaḥ path, sēvyatām following, bhayam fear, tyajyatām giving up.

"He who is defeated lives, but people will say he is timid. Resorting to the path of good people and serving them gives up fear."

śayāmahē.nihatāḥpṛthivyāmalpajīvitāḥ .

duṣprāpaṅbrahmalōkaṅvāprāpnuyāmōyudhisūditā ।।6.66.25।।

alpajīvitāḥ life span is reduced, nihatāḥ having been killed, pṛthivyām in the world, śayāmahēvāfall, yudhisūditā killed in war, duṣprāpam difficult to attain, brahmalōkam world of Brahma, prāpnuyāmaḥ ca will attain.

"If we are killed in war, fallen dead on the ground and our life span is reduced, we will attain the realm of Brahma which is difficult to attain."

samprāpnuyāmaḥkīrtiṅvānihatvāśatrumāhavē .

jīvitaṅvīralōkasyamōkṣyāmōvasuvānarāḥ ।।6.66.26।।

vānarāḥ Vanara, āhavē we will, śatrum the enemy, nihatvā killing, kīrtim fame, samprāpnuyāmaḥ will attain, vā or else, jīvitaḥ life, vīralōkasya in the world of Brahma, vasu will be, mōkṣyāmaḥ liberated.

"By killing the enemy, we will attain fame. Or else we will attain the world of Brahma, liberated."

na kumbhakarṇaḥkākutsthaṅdṛṣṭavājīvan gamiṣyati .

dīpyamānamivāsādyapataṅgōjvalanaṅyathā ।।6.66.27।।

pataṅgaḥ fly, dīpyamānam reaching flame, jvalanam blazing, āsādyaivayathā not possible to escape, kumbhakarṇaḥ for Kumbhakarna, kākutstham Kakuthsa, dṛṣṭavā seeing, jīvan life, na gacchati not escape.

"Just as flies reaching the blazing fire can't escape, so also Kumbhakarna can't escape with life after facing Kakuthsa."

lāyanēnacōddhiṣṭāḥprāṇān rakṣāmahēvayam .

ēkēnabahavōbhagnāyaśōnāśaṅgamiṣyati ।।6.66.28।।

ēkēna by one, bhagnāḥ destroyed, bahavaḥ though many, udadiṣṭāḥ distinguished, vayam we, palāyananē by running away, prāṇān life, rakṣāmahē protect, yaśaḥ glory, nāśam gone, gamiṣyati come to an end.

"Even though we are distinguished, if we preserve our life by running away for life, destroyed by one, our glory will come to an end."

ēvaṅbruvāṇaṅtaṅśūramaṅgadaṅkanakāṅgadam .

dravamāṇāstatōvākyamūcuḥśūruvigarhitam ।।6.66.29।।

dravamāṇāḥ fleeing away, ēvam in that manner, bruvāṇam speaking, kanakāṅgadam adorned with gold armlets, śūram to the heroes, tam that, aṅgadam Angada, tataḥ thereafter, śūruvigarhitam condemned by hero, vākyam words, ūcuḥ said.

While the heroic Angada, adorned with gold armlets, was speaking in that manner to the fleeing vanara heroes, condemned by the hero the vanaras replied as follows.

kṛtaṅnaḥkadanaṅghōraṅkumbhakarṇēnarakṣasā .

na sthānakālōgacchāmōdayitaṅjīvitaṅhinaḥ ।।6.66.30।।

naḥ us, rakṣasā Rakshasa, kumbhakarṇēnaKumbhakarna, ghōram dreadful, kadanam havoc, kṛtam done, sthānakālaḥ moment to stay, na not, naḥ we, jīvitam our life, dayitaṅhi dear to us.

"Kumbhakarna, the Rakshasa has done havoc to us. This is not the moment to stay. Our life is dear to us."

ētāvaduktvāvacanaṅsarvētēbhējirēdiśaḥ .

bhīmaṅbhīmākṣamāyāntaṅdṛṣṭavāvānarayūthapāḥ ।।6.66.31।।

sarvē all,ētā to you. vānarayūthapāḥ Vanara troops, bhīmākṣam frightful eyes, bhīmam fear, āyāntam coming towards, dṛṣṭavā seeing, ētāvat in that way, vacanamwords, uktvā having spoken, diśaḥ directions, bhējirē scattered.

All the Vanara troops having replied that way, seeing Kumbhakarna of frightful eyes coming towards them, scattered in all directions.

dravamāṇastutēvīrāaṅgadēnavalīmukhāḥ .

sāntvaiścaihanumānaiścatatassarvēnivartitāḥ ।।6.66.32।।

dravamāṇāḥ running away, vīrāḥ heroes, tē you are, valīmukhāḥ to return back, sarētataḥ wherever they were, aṅgadēna by Angada, sāntvaiścai with good words, anumānaiśca by examples, nivartitāḥ turned.

Though the heroic monkeys were running away, Angada by his good words and examples turned them to return from wherever they were.

praharṣamupanītāścavāliputrēṇadhīmatā .

ājñāpratīkṣāstasthuścasarvēvānarayūthapāḥ ।।6.66.33।।

sarvē all, vānarayūthapāḥ Vanara troops, dhīmatā wise, vāliputrēṇa Vali's son, praharṣam happily, upanītāḥ ca restored, ājñāpratīkṣāḥ awaiting command, tasthuḥ ca stood

All the Vanara troops having heard Angada, son of Vali happily restored awaiting his command.

ṛṣabhaśarabhamaindadhūmranīlāḥkumudasuṣēṇagavākṣarambhatārāḥ .

dvividapanasavāyuputramukhyāstvaritatarābhimukhaṅraṇaṅ ।।6.66.34।।

ṛṣabhaśarabhamaindhadhūmranīlāḥ Rshaba, Sarabha, Mainda, Dhruma and Nila, kumudasuṣēṇagavākṣambhatārāḥ Kumuda, Susena, Gavaksha, Rambha, and Tara, dvividapanasavāyuputramukhyāḥ Dwivida, Panasa, and Hanuman, tvaritatarābhimukham marched ahead swiftly, raṇam to the battlefield, prayātāḥ quickly.

Rshaba, Sarabha, Mainda and Nila, Kumuda, Susena, Rambha, and Tara headed by Dwiviida, Panasa and Hanuman marched ahead swiftly to the battlefield.
