[Ravana grieves Kumbhakarna's death]

कुम्भकर्णंहतंदृष्टवाराघवेणमहात्मना ।

राक्षसाराक्षसेन्द्रायरावणायन्यवेदयन् ।।6.68.1।।


महात्मना glorious, राघवेण by Raghava, कुम्भकर्णम् Kumbhakarna, हतम् slain, दृष्टवा seeing, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, राक्षसेन्द्राय Rakshasa king, रावणाय to Ravana, न्यवेदयन् informed.

Seeing Kumbhakarna slain by the glorious Raghava, the Rakshasas informed Ravana, the king of Rakshasas.
राजन् स कालसङ्काशस्संयुक्तःकालकर्मणा ।

विद्राव्यवानरींसेनांभक्षयित्वा च वानरान् ।।6.68.2।।


राजन् king, कालसङ्काशः equal to god of death, सः he, वानरीम् Vanaras, सेनाम् army, विद्राव्य having scattered, वानरान् Vanaras, भक्षयित्वा devouring, कालकर्मणा by consequence of time (fate), संयुक्तः joined death.

"O King! Kumbhakarna, who was equal to the God of Death, devoured and won over the Vanaras, scattered the army, has joined death as a consequence of time (fate)."
प्रतपित्वा मुहूर्तंतुप्रशान्तोरामतेजसा ।

कायेनार्थप्रविष्टेनसमुद्रंभीमदर्शनम् ।।6.68.3।।

निकृत्तकण्ठोरुभुजोविक्षरन्रुधिरंबहु ।

रुद्ध्वाद्वारंशरीरेणलङ्कायाःपर्वतोपमः ।।6.68.4।।

कुम्भकर्णस्तवभ्राताकाकुत्स्थशरपीडितः ।

लगण्डभूतोविकृतोदावदग्धइवद्रुमः ।।6.68.5।।


तव your, भ्राता brother, कुम्भकर्णः Kumbhakarna, मुहूर्तम् for a short time, प्रतपित्वा showed his might, रामतेजसा by Rama's energy, प्रशान्तः became, पर्वतोपमः mountain like, काकुत्स्थशरपीडितः pained by Kakutstha's arrows, अर्थप्रविष्टेन half of the trunk of his body, कायेन body, भीमदर्शनम् of dreadful appearance, समुद्रम् ocean, निकृत्तकण्ठोरुभुजः headless and limbless ugly form, बहुरुदिरं excessive blood, विक्षरन् appearing as if, शरीरेण from the body, लङ्कायाः Lanka, द्वारम् gate, रुद्ध्वा blocking, दावदग्धः forest fire, द्रुमःइव like tree, विकृतः ugly form, लगण्डभूताः head with nose and ears chopped off.

"Your brother Kumbhakarna showed his might for a short time. But by virtue of Rama's energy and arrows, his mountainlike body was reduced to a trunk of dreadful appearance. Bleeding excessively, he was like a mass submerged in an ocean of blood. like a tree caught in forest fire he was blocking the gate of Lanka in ugly form with a head, nose and ears chopped off."
तंश्रुत्वाविनिहतंसङ्ख्येकुम्भकर्णंमहाबलम् ।

रावणश्शोकसन्तप्तोमुमोह च पपात च ।।6.68.6।।


रावणः Ravana, सङ्ख्ये hearing, महाबलम् of great strength, कुम्भकर्णम् Kumbhakarna, विनिहतम् slain, तम् श्रुत्वा hearing that, शोकसन्तप्तः immersed in grief, मुमोह च पपात च became deluded and fell down.

Hearing that Kumbhakarna of great strength was slain, Ravana immersed in grief became deluded and fell.
पितृव्यंनिहतंश्रुत्वादेवान्तकनरान्तकौ ।

त्रिशिराश्चातिकायश्चरुरुदुश्शोकपीडिताः ।।6.68.7।।


पितृव्यम् uncle, निहतम् killed, श्रुत्वा hearing, देवान्तकनरान्तकौ Devantaka and Naranthaka, sons of Ravana, त्रिशिराः Trisira, अतिकायश्च Atikaya, शोकपीडिताः afflicted by grief, रुरुदुः roared aloud.

Hearing about uncle's destruction, the sons of Ravana, Devanthaka, Naranthaka, Trisira and Atikaya, roared aloud afflicted by grief.
भ्रातरंनिहतंश्रुत्वारामेणाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ।

महोदरमहापार्श्वौशोकाक्रान्तौबभूवतुः ।।6.68.8।।


अक्लिष्टकर्मणा of unwearied action, रामेण of Rama, भ्रातरम् brothers, निहतम् slain, श्रुत्वा hearing, महोदरमहापार्श्वौ Mahodara, Mahaparsva, शोकाक्रान्तौ overtaken by sorrow, बभूवतुः remained.

Ravana's brothers, Mahodara and Mahaparsva were overtaken by sorrow on hearing about the unwearied action of Rama and slaying of Kumbhakarna.
ततःकृच्छ्रात्समासाद्यसंज्ञांराक्षसपुङ्गवः ।

कुम्भकर्णवधाद्दीनोविललापकुलेन्द्रियः ।।6.68.9।।


ततः thereafter, राक्षसपुङ्गवः foremost of Rakshasas, कृच्छ्रात् with great difficulty, संज्ञाम् regaining, समासाद्य awakening, कुम्भकर्णवधात् Kumbhakarna's killing, दीनः desperate, आकुलेन्द्रियः disturbed in mind, विललाप wailed.

Thereafter the foremost of the Rakshasas regained consciousness with great difficulty and awakened to the situation of Kumbhakarna's destruction, wailed disturbed in mind.
हावीर रिपुदर्पघ्न कुम्भकर्ण महाबल ।

त्वंमांविहायवैदैवाद्यातोऽसियमसादनम् ।।6.68.10।।


हा Ha, वीर hero, रिपुदर्पघ्न who crushed the pride of enemy, महाबल of great prowess, कुम्भकर्ण Kumbhakarna, त्वम् you, माम् to me, विहाय deserted, दैवात् divine will, यमसादनम् abode of god of death, यातःअसि you actually.

"Ha! Hero! Kumbhakarna! You, who crushed the pride of the enemy, endowed with great prowess have deserted me and gone to the abode of death, actually by divine will."
ममशल्यमनुद्धृत्यबान्धवानांमहाबल ।

शत्रुसैन्यंप्रताप्यैकस्त्वंमांसन्त्यज्यगच्छसि ।।6.68.11।।


महाबल of extraordinary might, मम me, बान्धवानाम् kin, शल्यम् difficulty, अनुद्धृत्य tormented, शत्रुसैन्यम् enemy army, प्रताप्य valour, एकः alone, माम् me, सन्त्यज्य leaving, त्वम् you, गच्छसि going.

"O Kumbhakarna of extraordinary might! You have tormented the enemy army singlehanded with valour. You are going alone leaving me and the kinsfolk."
इदानींखल्वहंनास्मियस्यमेदक्षिणोभुजः ।

पतितोयंसमाश्रित्य न बिभेमिसुरासुरान् ।।6.68.12।।


यस्य मे by that I, दक्षिणःभुजः right arm, पतितः fallen, यम् God of death, समाश्रित्य depending on which, सुरासुरात् Devatas or Danavas, न बिभेमि not feared, अहम् I, इदानीम् from now, नास्मिखलु I am destroyed.

"I who depended on you like my right arm did not fear Devatas or Danavas and I am destroyed now."
कथमेवंविधोवीरोदेवदानवदर्पहा ।

कालाग्निरुद्राप्रतिमोरणेराघवेणवैहतः ।।6.68.13।।


देवदानवदर्पहा one who crushed the pride of Devas and Danavas, कालाग्निरुद्राप्रतिमः equal to time spirit and death at the time of destruction, एवंविधः being so, वीरः hero, रणे in battle, राघवेण by Raghava, कथम् how, हतःवै did you die?

"You, who crushed the pride of Devas and Danavas are equal to timespirit and death at dissolution and being a hero, how did you die in the hands of Raghava?"
यस्यतेवज्रनिष्पेषो न कुर्वाद्व्यसनंसदा ।

स कथंरामबाणार्तंप्रसुप्तोऽसिमहीतले ।।6.68.14।।


यस्य his, ते to you, वज्रनिष्पेषः the strike of thunderbolt, सदा ever, व्यसनम् not affect, न कुर्यात् not do any, सः that, रामबाणार्तः Rama's arrows, महीतले on ground, कथम् how, प्रसुप्तःअसि sleeping.

"You are never affected by the strike of thunderbolt. How are you sleeping on the ground hit by Rama's arrows?"
एतेदेवगणास्सार्थमृषिभिर्गगनेस्थिताः ।

निहतंत्वांरणेदृष्टवानिनदन्तिप्रहर्षिताः ।।6.68.15।।


एते these, देवगणाः Devatas, ऋषिभिःसार्थम् all sages, गगने in the sky, स्थिताः stood, रणे battle, निहतम् your destruction, त्वाम् you, दृष्टवा seeing, प्रहर्षिताः laughing, निनदन्ति aloud.

"These Devatas and all sages are standing in the sky, seeing the battle and laughing aloud seeing your destruction."
ध्रुवमद्यैवसंहृष्टालब्धलक्षाःप्लवङ्गमाः ।

आरोक्ष्यन्तीहदुर्गाणिलङ्काद्वाराणिसर्वशः ।।6.68.16।।


लब्धलक्षाः having found opportunity, प्लवङ्गमाः Vanaras, संहृष्टाः highly rejoiced, अद्यैव surely, सर्वशः all over, अद्यैव the very day, इह here, दुर्गाणि fort, लङ्काद्वाराणि gates of Lanka, आरोक्ष्यन्ति will climb, ध्रुवम् determined.

"Having found an opportunity, all the Vanaras, highly rejoiced, on this very day, will surely climb over the gates of forts of Lanka determined."
राज्येननास्तिमेकार्यंकिंकरिष्यामिसीतया ।

कुम्भकर्णविहीनस्यजीवितेनास्तिमेमतिः ।।6.68.17।।


मे my, राज्येन kingdom, कार्यम् purpose, नास्ति not, सीतया Sita, किंकरिष्यामि What will I do, कुम्भकर्णविहीनस्य Kumbhakarna's death, मे I, जीविते life, मतिः mind, नास्ति lost.

"I have no purpose with the kingdom. What will I do with Sita? I have lost my life and mind with Kumbhakarna's death."
यद्यहंभ्रातृहन्तारं न हन्मियुधिराघवम् ।

ननुमेमरणंश्रेयो न चेदंव्यर्थजीवितम् ।।6.68.18।।


अहम् I am, भ्रातृहन्तारम् who killed my brother, राघवम् Raghavan, युधि in battle, न हन्मियदि if I do not kill, मे my, मरणम् death, श्रेयःननु better for me, इदम् thus, व्यर्थजीवितम् waste of life, न not worth.

"If I do not kill Raghava who killed my brother in battle it is a waste of my life." Thus, thought Ravana.
अद्यैवतंगमिष्यामिदेशंयत्रानुजोमम ।

न हिभ्रातृ़न् समुत्सृज्यक्षणंजीवितमुत्सहे ।।6.68.19।।


मम me, अनुजः brother, यत्र there, तंदेशम् his region, अद्यैव today, गमिष्यामि will reach, भ्रातृ़न् brother's, समुत्सृज्य where he died, क्षणम् this very minute, जीवितुम् life, न उत्सहे no interest.

"This very day, this very minute I shall reach the region where my brother died, I have no interest in life."
देवाहिमांहसिष्यन्तिदृष्टवापूर्वापकारिणम् ।

कथमिन्द्रंजयिष्यामिकुम्भकर्ण हतेत्वयि ।।6.68.20।।


पूर्वापकारिणम् earlier harmed, माम् by me, दृष्टवा seeing, देवाः Devatas, हसिष्यन्तिहि will laugh at me, कुम्भकर्ण Kumbhakarna, त्वयि your, हते destruction, इन्द्रम् Indra, कथम् how, जयिष्यामि will I win?.

"Devatas who were harmed by me earlier will laugh at me now that Kumbhakarna is slain. How will I win Indra?"
तदिदंमामनुप्राप्तंविभीषणवचश्शुभम् ।

यदज्ञानान्मयातस्य न गृहीतंमहात्मनः ।।6.68.21।।


अज्ञानात् this calamity, महात्मनः great soul, तस्य his, यत् that which, मया by me, न गृहीतम् not taken, तत् that, इदम् such, शुभम् auspicious, विभीषणवचः Vibheeshana's words of advice, माम् me, अनुप्राप्तम् not accepted.

"This calamity that has come upon me was because I have not taken such auspicious advice rendered by the great soul Vibheeshana."
विभीषणवचोयावत्कुम्भकर्णप्रहस्तयोः ।

विनाशोऽयंसमुत्पन्नोमांव्रीडयतिदारुणः ।।6.68.22।।


कुम्भकर्णप्रहस्तयोः both Kumbhakarna and Prahastha, दारुणः dreadful, अयम् this, विनाशः loss, यावत् totally, समुत्पन्नः that which has come up, विभीषणवचः Vibheeshana's words, माम् me, व्रीडयति hurts me.

"Thus, loss of both Kumbhakarna and Prahastha is dreadful. It is because of not following the words of advice of Vibheeshana totally. It hurts me."
तस्यायंकर्मणःप्राप्तोविपाकोममशोकदः ।

यन्मयाधार्मिकश्शमान् स निरस्तोविभीषणः ।।6.68.23।।


धार्मिकः righteous, श्रीमान् prosperous, सः he, विभीषणः Vibheeshana, यत् his, मया by me, निरस्तः expelled, तस्यकर्मणः by that action, शोकदः grief, अयम् this, विपाकः in the form of grief, मम to me, प्राप्तः obtained.

"Righteous and prosperous Vibheeshana has been expelled by me earlier. By that action, I have obtained this grief."
इतिबहुविधमाकुलान्तरात्माकृपणमतीवविलप्यकुम्भकर्णम् ।

न्यपदथदशाननोभृशार्तस्तमनुजमिन्द्ररिपुंहतंविदित्वा ।।6.68.24।।
 

अथ now, दशाननः ten-headed, इन्द्ररिपुम् enemy of Indra, तम् his, अनुजम् brother, कुम्भकर्णम् Kumbhakarna, हतम् destruction, विदित्वा grieving, आकुलान्तरात्मा mind agitated deeply, इति thus, अतीव profusely, कृपणम् lamented, बहुविधम् in many ways, विलप्य saddened, भृशार्तः sank, न्यपतत् अपि fell down.

Thus, the ten-headed, Ravana saddened by the destruction of his brother, an enemy of Indra, the Rakshasa king lamented profusely in many ways grieving and fell down, his mind agitated deeply.
