[Ravana grieves Kumbhakarna's death]

kumbhakarṇaṅhataṅdṛṣṭavārāghavēṇamahātmanā .

rākṣasārākṣasēndrāyarāvaṇāyanyavēdayan ।।6.68.1।।


mahātmanā glorious, rāghavēṇa by Raghava, kumbhakarṇam Kumbhakarna, hatam slain, dṛṣṭavā seeing, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, rākṣasēndrāya Rakshasa king, rāvaṇāya to Ravana, nyavēdayan informed.

Seeing Kumbhakarna slain by the glorious Raghava, the Rakshasas informed Ravana, the king of Rakshasas.
rājan sa kālasaṅkāśassaṅyuktaḥkālakarmaṇā .

vidrāvyavānarīṅsēnāṅbhakṣayitvā ca vānarān ।।6.68.2।।


rājan king, kālasaṅkāśaḥ equal to god of death, saḥ he, vānarīm Vanaras, sēnām army, vidrāvya having scattered, vānarān Vanaras, bhakṣayitvā devouring, kālakarmaṇā by consequence of time (fate), saṅyuktaḥ joined death.

"O King! Kumbhakarna, who was equal to the God of Death, devoured and won over the Vanaras, scattered the army, has joined death as a consequence of time (fate)."
pratapitvā muhūrtaṅtupraśāntōrāmatējasā .

kāyēnārthapraviṣṭēnasamudraṅbhīmadarśanam ।।6.68.3।।

nikṛttakaṇṭhōrubhujōvikṣaranrudhiraṅbahu .

ruddhvādvāraṅśarīrēṇalaṅkāyāḥparvatōpamaḥ ।।6.68.4।।

kumbhakarṇastavabhrātākākutsthaśarapīḍitaḥ .

lagaṇḍabhūtōvikṛtōdāvadagdhaivadrumaḥ ।।6.68.5।।


tava your, bhrātā brother, kumbhakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, muhūrtam for a short time, pratapitvā showed his might, rāmatējasā by Rama's energy, praśāntaḥ became, parvatōpamaḥ mountain like, kākutsthaśarapīḍitaḥ pained by Kakutstha's arrows, arthapraviṣṭēna half of the trunk of his body, kāyēna body, bhīmadarśanam of dreadful appearance, samudram ocean, nikṛttakaṇṭhōrubhujaḥ headless and limbless ugly form, bahurudiraṅ excessive blood, vikṣaran appearing as if, śarīrēṇa from the body, laṅkāyāḥ Lanka, dvāram gate, ruddhvā blocking, dāvadagdhaḥ forest fire, drumaḥiva like tree, vikṛtaḥ ugly form, lagaṇḍabhūtāḥ head with nose and ears chopped off.

"Your brother Kumbhakarna showed his might for a short time. But by virtue of Rama's energy and arrows, his mountain-like body was reduced to a trunk of dreadful appearance. Bleeding excessively, he was like a mass submerged in an ocean of blood. like a tree caught in forest fire he was blocking the gate of Lanka in ugly form with a head, nose and ears chopped off."
taṅśrutvāvinihataṅsaṅkhyēkumbhakarṇaṅmahābalam .

rāvaṇaśśōkasantaptōmumōha ca papāta ca ।।6.68.6।।


rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, saṅkhyē hearing, mahābalam of great strength, kumbhakarṇam Kumbhakarna, vinihatam slain, tam śrutvā hearing that, śōkasantaptaḥ immersed in grief, mumōha ca papāta ca became deluded and fell down.

Hearing that Kumbhakarna of great strength was slain, Ravana immersed in grief became deluded and fell.
pitṛvyaṅnihataṅśrutvādēvāntakanarāntakau .

triśirāścātikāyaścaruruduśśōkapīḍitāḥ ।।6.68.7।।


pitṛvyam uncle, nihatam killed, śrutvā hearing, dēvāntakanarāntakau Devantaka and Naranthaka, sons of Ravana, triśirāḥ Trisira, atikāyaśca Atikaya, śōkapīḍitāḥ afflicted by grief, ruruduḥ roared aloud.

Hearing about uncle's destruction, the sons of Ravana, Devanthaka, Naranthaka, Trisira and Atikaya, roared aloud afflicted by grief.
bhrātaraṅnihataṅśrutvārāmēṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā .

mahōdaramahāpārśvauśōkākrāntaubabhūvatuḥ ।।6.68.8।।


akliṣṭakarmaṇā of unwearied action, rāmēṇa of Rama, bhrātaram brothers, nihatam slain, śrutvā hearing, mahōdaramahāpārśvau Mahodara, Mahaparsva, śōkākrāntau overtaken by sorrow, babhūvatuḥ remained.

Ravana's brothers, Mahodara and Mahaparsva were overtaken by sorrow on hearing about the unwearied action of Rama and slaying of Kumbhakarna.
tataḥkṛcchrātsamāsādyasaṅjñāṅrākṣasapuṅgavaḥ .

kumbhakarṇavadhāddīnōvilalāpakulēndriyaḥ ।।6.68.9।।


tataḥ thereafter, rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ foremost of Rakshasas, kṛcchrāt with great difficulty, saṅjñām regaining, samāsādya awakening, kumbhakarṇavadhāt Kumbhakarna's killing, dīnaḥ desperate, ākulēndriyaḥ disturbed in mind, vilalāpa wailed.

Thereafter the foremost of the Rakshasas regained consciousness with great difficulty and awakened to the situation of Kumbhakarna's destruction, wailed disturbed in mind.
hāvīra ripudarpaghna kumbhakarṇa mahābala .

tvaṅmāṅvihāyavaidaivādyātō.siyamasādanam ।।6.68.10।।


hā Ha, vīra hero, ripudarpaghna who crushed the pride of enemy, mahābala of great prowess, kumbhakarṇa Kumbhakarna, tvam you, mām to me, vihāya deserted, daivāt divine will, yamasādanam abode of god of death, yātaḥasi you actually.

"Ha! Hero! Kumbhakarna! You, who crushed the pride of the enemy, endowed with great prowess have deserted me and gone to the abode of death, actually by divine will."
mamaśalyamanuddhṛtyabāndhavānāṅmahābala .

śatrusainyaṅpratāpyaikastvaṅmāṅsantyajyagacchasi ।।6.68.11।।


mahābala of extraordinary might, mama me, bāndhavānām kin, śalyam difficulty, anuddhṛtya tormented, śatrusainyam enemy army, pratāpya valour, ēkaḥ alone, mām me, santyajya leaving, tvam you, gacchasi going.

"O Kumbhakarna of extraordinary might! You have tormented the enemy army singlehanded with valour. You are going alone leaving me and the kinsfolk."
idānīṅkhalvahaṅnāsmiyasyamēdakṣiṇōbhujaḥ .

patitōyaṅsamāśritya na bibhēmisurāsurān ।।6.68.12।।


yasya mē by that I, dakṣiṇaḥbhujaḥ right arm, patitaḥ fallen, yam God of death, samāśritya depending on which, surāsurāt Devatas or Danavas, na bibhēmi not feared, aham I, idānīm from now, nāsmikhalu I am destroyed.

"I who depended on you like my right arm did not fear Devatas or Danavas and I am destroyed now."
kathamēvaṅvidhōvīrōdēvadānavadarpahā .

kālāgnirudrāpratimōraṇērāghavēṇavaihataḥ ।।6.68.13।।


dēvadānavadarpahā one who crushed the pride of Devas and Danavas, kālāgnirudrāpratimaḥ equal to time spirit and death at the time of destruction, ēvaṅvidhaḥ being so, vīraḥ hero, raṇē in battle, rāghavēṇa by Raghava, katham how, hataḥvai did you die?

"You, who crushed the pride of Devas and Danavas are equal to time-spirit and death at dissolution and being a hero, how did you die in the hands of Raghava?"
yasyatēvajraniṣpēṣō na kurvādvyasanaṅsadā .

sa kathaṅrāmabāṇārtaṅprasuptō.simahītalē ।।6.68.14।।


yasya his, tē to you, vajraniṣpēṣaḥ the strike of thunderbolt, sadā ever, vyasanam not affect, na kuryāt not do any, saḥ that, rāmabāṇārtaḥ Rama's arrows, mahītalē on ground, katham how, prasuptaḥasi sleeping.

"You are never affected by the strike of thunderbolt. How are you sleeping on the ground hit by Rama's arrows?"
ētēdēvagaṇāssārthamṛṣibhirgaganēsthitāḥ .

nihataṅtvāṅraṇēdṛṣṭavāninadantipraharṣitāḥ ।।6.68.15।।


ētē these, dēvagaṇāḥ Devatas, ṛṣibhiḥsārtham all sages, gaganē in the sky, sthitāḥ stood, raṇē battle, nihatam your destruction, tvām you, dṛṣṭavā seeing, praharṣitāḥ laughing, ninadanti aloud.

"These Devatas and all sages are standing in the sky, seeing the battle and laughing aloud seeing your destruction."
dhruvamadyaivasaṅhṛṣṭālabdhalakṣāḥplavaṅgamāḥ .

ārōkṣyantīhadurgāṇilaṅkādvārāṇisarvaśaḥ ।।6.68.16।।


labdhalakṣāḥ having found opportunity, plavaṅgamāḥ Vanaras, saṅhṛṣṭāḥ highly rejoiced, adyaiva surely, sarvaśaḥ all over, adyaiva the very day, iha here, durgāṇi fort, laṅkādvārāṇi gates of Lanka, ārōkṣyanti will climb, dhruvam determined.

"Having found an opportunity, all the Vanaras, highly rejoiced, on this very day, will surely climb over the gates of forts of Lanka determined."
rājyēnanāstimēkāryaṅkiṅkariṣyāmisītayā .

kumbhakarṇavihīnasyajīvitēnāstimēmatiḥ ।।6.68.17।।


mē my, rājyēna kingdom, kāryam purpose, nāsti not, sītayā Sita, kiṅkariṣyāmi What will I do, kumbhakarṇavihīnasya Kumbhakarna's death, mē I, jīvitē life, matiḥ mind, nāsti lost.

"I have no purpose with the kingdom. What will I do with Sita? I have lost my life and mind with Kumbhakarna's death."
yadyahaṅbhrātṛhantāraṅ na hanmiyudhirāghavam .

nanumēmaraṇaṅśrēyō na cēdaṅvyarthajīvitam ।।6.68.18।।


aham I am, bhrātṛhantāram who killed my brother, rāghavam Raghavan, yudhi in battle, na hanmiyadi if I do not kill, mē my, maraṇam death, śrēyaḥnanu better for me, idam thus, vyarthajīvitam waste of life, na not worth.

"If I do not kill Raghava who killed my brother in battle it is a waste of my life." Thus, thought Ravana.
adyaivataṅgamiṣyāmidēśaṅyatrānujōmama .

na hibhrātṛn samutsṛjyakṣaṇaṅjīvitamutsahē ।।6.68.19।।


mama me, anujaḥ brother, yatra there, taṅdēśam his region, adyaiva today, gamiṣyāmi will reach, bhrātṛn brother's, samutsṛjya where he died, kṣaṇam this very minute, jīvitum life, na utsahē no interest.

"This very day, this very minute I shall reach the region where my brother died, I have no interest in life."
dēvāhimāṅhasiṣyantidṛṣṭavāpūrvāpakāriṇam .

kathamindraṅjayiṣyāmikumbhakarṇa hatētvayi ।।6.68.20।।


pūrvāpakāriṇam earlier harmed, mām by me, dṛṣṭavā seeing, dēvāḥ Devatas, hasiṣyantihi will laugh at me, kumbhakarṇa Kumbhakarna, tvayi your, hatē destruction, indram Indra, katham how, jayiṣyāmi will I win?.

"Devatas who were harmed by me earlier will laugh at me now that Kumbhakarna is slain. How will I win Indra?"
tadidaṅmāmanuprāptaṅvibhīṣaṇavacaśśubham .

yadajñānānmayātasya na gṛhītaṅmahātmanaḥ ।।6.68.21।।


ajñānāt this calamity, mahātmanaḥ great soul, tasya his, yat that which, mayā by me, na gṛhītam not taken, tat that, idam such, śubham auspicious, vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ Vibheeshana's words of advice, mām me, anuprāptam not accepted.

"This calamity that has come upon me was because I have not taken such auspicious advice rendered by the great soul Vibheeshana."
vibhīṣaṇavacōyāvatkumbhakarṇaprahastayōḥ .

vināśō.yaṅsamutpannōmāṅvrīḍayatidāruṇaḥ ।।6.68.22।।


kumbhakarṇaprahastayōḥ both Kumbhakarna and Prahastha, dāruṇaḥ dreadful, ayam this, vināśaḥ loss, yāvat totally, samutpannaḥ that which has come up, vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ Vibheeshana's words, mām me, vrīḍayati hurts me.

"Thus, loss of both Kumbhakarna and Prahastha is dreadful. It is because of not following the words of advice of Vibheeshana totally. It hurts me."
tasyāyaṅkarmaṇaḥprāptōvipākōmamaśōkadaḥ .

yanmayādhārmikaśśamān sa nirastōvibhīṣaṇaḥ ।।6.68.23।।


dhārmikaḥ righteous, śrīmān prosperous, saḥ he, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, yat his, mayā by me, nirastaḥ expelled, tasyakarmaṇaḥ by that action, śōkadaḥ grief, ayam this, vipākaḥ in the form of grief, mama to me, prāptaḥ obtained.

"Righteous and prosperous Vibheeshana has been expelled by me earlier. By that action, I have obtained this grief."
itibahuvidhamākulāntarātmākṛpaṇamatīvavilapyakumbhakarṇam .

nyapadathadaśānanōbhṛśārtastamanujamindraripuṅhataṅviditvā ।।6.68.24।।


atha now, daśānanaḥ ten eyed, indraripum enemy of Indra, tam his, anujam brother, kumbhakarṇam Kumbhakarna, hatam destruction, viditvā grieving, ākulāntarātmā mind agitated deeply, iti thus, atīva profusely, kṛpaṇam lamented, bahuvidham in many ways, vilapya saddened, bhṛśārtaḥ sank, nyapatat api fell down.

Thus, the ten-eyed, Ravana saddened by the destruction of his brother, an enemy of Indra, the Rakshasa king lamented profusely in many ways grieving and fell down, his mind agitated deeply.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēādikāvyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēyuddhakāṇḍēaṣṭaṣaṣṭitamassargaḥ ।।
