Sloka & Translation

[ Atikaya, son of Dhanyamalini, arrives on the battlefield. Vanaras and Rama wondered at his form, chariot, and brilliance. Lakshmana has a terrific fight with Atikaya and kills him.]

svabalaṅvyathitaṅdṛṣṭavātumulaṅrōmaharṣaṇam .

bhrātṛṅścanihatān dṛṣṭavāśakratulyaparākramān ।।6.71.1।।

pitṛvyaucāpisanṛdṛśyasamarēsannighāditau .

yuddhōnmattaṅ ca mattaṅ ca bhrātaraurākṣasarṣabhau ।।6.71.2।।

cukōpa ca mahātējābrahmadattavarōyudhi .

atikāyō.drisaṅkāśōdēvadānavadarpahā ।।6.71.3।।


mahātējāḥ highly energetic, brahmadattavaraḥ who had obtained boons from Brahma, adrisaṅkāśaḥ mountain like form, yudhi in battle, dēvadānavadarpahā who subdued the pride of Devas and Danavas, atikāyaḥ of huge body, tumulam making a tumultuous sound, rōmaharṣaṇam horripilation, svabalam his own army, vyathitam killed, dṛṣṭavā seeing, śakratulyaparākramān equal to Indra in valour, bhrātṛn ca brothers, nihatān killed, dṛṣṭavā seeing, pitṛvvau uncles, rākṣasarṣabhau bulls among Rakshasas, bhrātarau brothers, yuddhōnmataṅ ca Yuddhomatta, mattaṅ ca Matta, samarē in conflict, sannighāditau collected together, sanddṛśya seeing, cukōpa ca was furious.

Highly energetic Atikaya, who was like a mountain in form, had huge body, obtained boons from Brahma, subdued the pride of Devas and Danavas, was equal to Indra in valour. Seeing his own army of Rakshasas that caused horripilation, uncles who were bulls among Rakshasas struck down in the battlefield and his own brothers Yuddhotama (Mahodara) and Matta (Mahaparsva) struck down, he flew in rage.
sa bhāskarasahasrasyasaṅghātamivabhāsvaram .

rathamāsthāyaśakrārirabhidudrāvavānarān ।।6.71.4।।


śakrāriḥ crowned, saḥ he, bhāsarasahasrasya thousand suns, saṅghātamiva collected, bhāsvaram glowing, ratham chariot, āsthāya mounted, vānarān Vanaras, abhidudrāva darted towards.

Adorned with a crown, Ravana glowing like a thousand suns collected together mounted the chariot and darted towards Vanaras.
sa visphāryamahācāpaṅkirīṭīmṛṣṭakuṇḍalaḥ .

nāmaviśrāvayāmāsananāda ca mahāsvanam ।।6.71.5।।


kirīṭī adorned with crown, mṛṣṭakuṇḍalaḥ polished earrings, saḥ he, mahā great, cāpam bow, visphārya twanging,nāma name, viśrāvayāmāsa proclaimed, mahāsvanam sounding aloud, nanāda ca roared.

Adorned with crown, and polished earrings, twanging his bow, proclaimed his name and roared sounding aloud.
tēnasiṅhapraṇādēnanāmaviśrāvaṇēna ca .

jyāśabdēna ca bhīmēnatrāsayāmāsavānarān ।।6.71.6।।


tēna by that, siṅhapraṇādēna lion roar, nāmaviśrāvaṇēna ca proclamation of his name, bhīmēna frightening, jyāśabdēna ca by that sound, vānarān Vanaras, trāsayāmāsa struck terror.

By that lion-roar, and proclamation of his name (by the sound of the twang) frightening the Vanaras he struck terror.
tēdṛṣṭavādēhamāhātmyaṅkumbhakarṇō.yamuthatitaḥ .

bhayārtāvānarāssarvēsaṅśrayantēparasparam ।।6.71.7।।


sarvē all, tēvānarāḥ those Vanaras, dēhamāhātmyaṅ huge body, dṛṣṭavā seeing, ayam this, kumbhakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, uthatitaḥ got up and come, bhayārtāḥ in fear, parasparam one another, saṅśrayantē sought help.

Those Vanaras seeing the huge body thought, "This is Kumbhakarna, who has got up and come'. Out of fear, they sought the help of one another.
tētasyarūpamālōkyayathāviṣṭōstrivikramē .

bhayādvānarayūdhāstēvidravantitatastataḥ ।।6.71.8।।


tē they, vānarayūdhāḥ Vanara troops, trivikramē Trivikrama form assumed, viṣṇōḥyathā by Vishnu, tasya his, rūpam form, ālōkya observing, bhayāt in panic, tatastataḥ here and there, vidravanti fled in panic.

The Vanara troops, observing his form resembling the Trivikram form assumed by Vishnu, the monkey troops fled here and there in panic.
tē.tikāyaṅsamāsādyavānarāmūḍhacētasaḥ .

śaraṇyaṅśaraṇaṅjagmurlakṣmaṇāgrajamāhavē ।।6.71.9।।


tēvānarāḥ those Vanaras, atikāyam huge body, samāsādya reaching, mūḍhacētasaḥ deluded, āhavē sought, śaraṇyam refuge, lakṣmaṇāgrajam brother of Lakshmana, jagmuḥ went.

The Vanaras were deluded on reaching the huge body and went to Sri Rama to seek refuge.
tō.tikāyaṅkākutsthōrathasthaṅparvatōpamam .

dadarśadhavaninaṅdūrādgarjantaṅkālamēghavat ।।6.71.10।।


tataḥ then, kākutthsaḥ Kakutstha, rathastham on the chariot, parvatōpamam looking like mountain, dhavanina wielding bow, kālamēghavat rumbling like cloud at the time of universal destruction, garjantam roaring, atikāyam huge body, dūrāt from a distance, dadarśa saw.

Then Kakutstha saw from a distance form of huge body looking like a mountain, wielding bow, rumbling like a cloud at universal destruction.
sa taṅdṛṣṭavāmahātmānaṅrāghavastuvisismiyē .

vānarān sāntvayitvā ca vibhīṣaṇamuvāca ha ।।6.71.11।।


saḥ he, rāghavastu Raghava, mahātmānaṅ great self, tam him, dṛṣṭavā seeing, visismiyē. amazed, vānarān Vanaras, sāntvayitvā ca reassuring, vibhīṣaṇam to Vibheeshana, uvāca ha spoke.

Raghava the great, seeing the form of a huge body, was amazed, reassured by the Vanaras, and spoke to Vibheeshana.
kō.sauparvatasaṅkāśōdhanuṣmānharilōcanaḥ .

yuktēhayasahasrēṇaviśālēsyandanēsthitaḥ ।।6.71.12।।


parvatasaṅkāśaḥ resembling mountain, dhanuṣmān holding a bow, harilōcanaḥ yellow eyes, hayasahasrēṇa by a thousand horses, yuktē drawn, viśālē broad, syandanē chariot, sthitaḥ seated, asau is, kaḥ who.

"Who is he, the yellow-eyed, resembling a mountain, seated in the broad chariot drawn by a thousand horses?"
ya ēṣaniśitaiśśūlaissutīkṇaiḥprāsamudgaraiḥ .

arciṣmadbhirvṛtōbhātibhūtairivamahēśvaraḥ ।।6.71.13।।


yaḥ he who, ēṣaḥ that way, arciṣmadbhiḥ in the midst, niśitaiḥ sharp, śūlaiḥ tridents, sutīkṇaiḥ shining, prāsamugdaraiḥ spears, vṛtaḥ surrounded, bhūtaiḥ beings, mahēśvaraḥiva like Maheswara, bhāti seems.

"Who is he in the midst, with sharp tridents and shining spears, like Maheswara surrounded by beings?"
kālajihvāprakāśābhiryaēṣō.tivirājatē .

āvṛtōrathaśaktībhirvidyudbhirivatōyadaḥ ।।6.71.14।।


yaḥ he who, ēṣaḥ in that way, kālajihvāprakāśābhiḥ gleaming like the tongues of Kala, rathaśaktībhiḥ with flashes of javelins, āvṛtaḥ encircled, vidyudbhiḥ lightning, tōyadaḥiva like a cloud, ativirājatē shining very bright.

"Who is he, gleaming like the tongues of time spirit (Kala spirit), with flashes of javelins, encircled with lightning and looking like a cloud shining very bright?"
dhanūṅṣicāsyasajjānihēmapṛṣṭhānisarvaśaḥ .

śōbhayantirathaśrēṣṭhaṅśakracāpamivāmbaram ।।6.71.15।।


sajjāni all bows, hēmapṛṣṭhāni with golden backs, dhanūṅṣi ca bows, asya his, rathaśrēṣṭham excellent chariot, śakracāpam rainbow, ambaram iva in the sky like, sarvaśaḥ all sides, śōbhayanti beautiful.

"His bows decorated with gold on the back, are like a rainbow in the sky on all sides and makes the chariot excellent."
ka ēṣarakṣaśśārdūlōraṇabhūmivirājayan .

abhyētirathināṅśrēṣṭhōrathēnādityatējasā ।।6.71.16।।

dhvajaśṛṅgapratiṣṭhēnarāhuṇābhivirājatē .

sūryaramaśinibhairbāṇairdiśō daśa virājayan ।।6.71.17।।


kaḥ he, rakṣaśśārdūlaḥ tiger among Rakshasas, rathinām on the chariot, śrēṣṭhaḥ foremost, ēṣaḥ in that way, raṇabhūmim battlefield, virājayan illuminating, ādityatējasā like the brightness of the Sun, rathēna on chariot, abhyēti coming, sūryaramaśinabhaiḥ resplendent like Sun 's rays, bāṇaiḥ by arrows, daśa ten, diśaḥ directions, virājayan illuminating, dhvajaśṛṅghapratiṣṭhēna on top of the pole of the chariot, rāhuṇā by the Rahu, abhivirājatē very splendid.

"The tiger among the Rakshasas seated in the chariot is the foremost car warrior. He is illuminating the battlefield like the brightness of the Sun, resplendent like Sun 's rays. By his arrows he is illuminating the ten directions. The Rahu emblem on top of the pole of the chariot is very splendid."
triṇataṅmēghasannādaṅhēmapṛṣṭhamalaṅkṛtam .

śatakratudhanuḥprakhyaṅdhanuścāsyavirājatē ।।6.71.18।।


asya his, triṇatam curved in three places, mēghasannādam close to thundering cloud, hēmavṛṣṭham golden, alaṅkṛtam decorated, dhanuḥ bow, prakhyam casting, virājatē splendour.

"His bow with three curves, covered with gold, decorated, is close to a thundering cloud, casting its splendour."
sa dhvajassapatākaścasānukarṣōmahārathaḥ .

catussādisamāyuktōmēghastanitāni ।।6.71.19।।


sadhvajaḥ the standard, sapatākaśca and the flag, sānukarṣaḥ axle-tree, mēghastanitāni emitting sound like the rumblings of cloud, mahārathaḥ great chariot, catussādisamāyuktaḥ driven by four charioteers.

"His chariot with standard, flag and axle-tree is a great one driven by four charioteers emitting sound like the rumblings of clouds."
viṅśatirdaśacāṣṭau ca tūṇyō.syarathamāsthitāḥ .

kārmukāni ca bhīmānijyāścakāñcanapiṅgaḷāḥ ।।6.71.20।।


viṅśatiḥ twenty, daśa ca ten, aṣṭau ca eight, tūṇyaḥ quivers, bhīmāni frightening, kārmukāni ca bows, kāñcanapiṅgaḷāḥ golden coloured, jyāśca bowstrings asya his, ratham chariot, āsthitāḥ lay arranged.

"This chariot has twenty quivers, ten frightening bows, and eight bow strings of golden colour lay arranged in the chariot."
dvau ca khaḍagaurathagataupārśvasthaupārśvaśōbhitau .

caturhastatsaruyutauvyaktahastadaśāyatau ।।6.71.21।।


pārśvasthau on the sides, pārśvaśōbhitau decorating the sides, caturhastatsaruyutau measuring four cubits, vyaktahastadaśāyatau ten cubits long, dvau two, ghaḍagau ca swords, rathagatau decorating it.

"It has two swords off our cubits and ten cubits long swords provided with hilts hanging on its sides as decoration."
raktagaṇṭhaguṇōdhīrōmahāparvatasannibhaḥ .

kālaḥkālamahāvaktrōmēghasthaivabhāskaraḥ ।।6.71.22।।


raktakaṇṭhaguṇaḥ wearing red garland s around his neck, dhīraḥ brave, mahāparvatasannibhaḥ as if he is a mountain, kālaḥ death, kālamahāvaktraḥ dark with large mouth, mēghasthaḥ veiled by cloud, bhāskaraḥiva like Sun.

"Wearing red garland s round the neck, brave, like a mountain in form, dark with large mouth, like death, like sun veiled by clouds he seems."
kāñcanāṅgadanaddhābhyāṅbhūjābhyāmēṣaśōbhatē .

śṛṅgābhyāmivatuṅgābhyāṅhimavān parvatōttamaḥ ।।6.71.23।।


kāñcanāṅgadanaddhābhyām by adorning golden armlets, bhujābhyām both arms, ēṣaḥ that way, tuṅgābhyām high, śṛṅgābhyām peak, parvatōttamaḥ like a mountain, himavān iva like Himalaya mountain, śōbhatē shining.

"By adorning armlets, his both arms are like high peaks of Himalaya mountain shining away."
kuṇḍalābhyāṅtuyasyaitadbhatadhbhātiśubhēkṣa .

punarvasvantaragataṅpūrṇaṅbhiṅbamivaiṅdavam ।।6.71.24।।


śubhēkṣaṇam auspicious eyes, vaktram countenance, yassvaitadhbāti whose is shining, kuṇḍalābhyām both ear rings, punarvasvantaragataḥ between Punarvasu stars, pūrṇaṅbiṅbamivaiṅdavam like the full moon.

"He who shines like the full moon between two Punarvasu stars, his auspicious eyes and countenance shines with both earrings."
ācakṣvamēmahābāhōtvamēnaṅrākṣasōttamam .

yaṅdṛṣṭavāvānarāssarvēbhayārtāvidrutādiśaḥ ।।6.71.25।।


mahābāhō mighty armed one, yaṅ him, dṛṣṭavā seeing, sarvē all, vānarāḥ Vanara, bhayārtāḥ fear, diśaḥ direction, vidrutāḥ fled, ēnam such, rākṣasōttamam foremost of the Rakshasas, tvam you, mē to me, ācakṣva show him.

"Oh! Vibheeshana, a mighty armed one! Show me that foremost of Rakshasas, whom all Vanaras feared and fled in all directions."
sa pṛṣṭōrājaputrēṇarāmēṇāmitatējasā .

ācacakṣēmahātējāraghavāyavibhīṣaṇaḥ ।।6.71.26।।


rājaputrēṇa prince, amitatējasā highly brilliant, rāmēṇa by Rama, pṛṣṭaḥ interrogated, saḥ he, mahātējāḥ highly energetic, vibhīṣaṇaḥ Vibheeshana, rāghavāya to Raghava, ācacakṣē revealed.

daśagrīvōmahātējārājāvaiśravaṇānujaḥ .

bhīmakarmāmahōtsāhōrāvaṇōrākṣasādhipaḥ ।।6.71.27।।


daśagrīvaḥ ten-headed, mahātējāḥ highly brilliant, rājā king, vaiśravaṇānujaḥ brother of Vysravana, bhīmakarmā of terrible deeds, mahōtsāhaḥ highly exploitative, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, rākṣasādhipaḥ king of Rakshasas.

"The ten-headed and highly brilliant king Ravana, who is the brother of Vysravana, is of terrible deeds and highly exploitative."
tasyāsīdvīryavānputrōrāvaṇapratimōraṇē .

vṛddhasēvīśrutidharassarvāstraviduṣāṅvaraḥ ।।6.71.28।।


tasya to him, vīryavān valiant, raṇē in war, rāvaṇapratimaḥ compeer of Ravana, vṛddhasēvī served elders, śrutidharaḥ learned, sarvāstraviduṣām well versed in all sastras, varaḥ blessed, putraḥ son, āsīt born.

"To him was born a blessed son, valiant one, compeer of Ravana, who served elders, learned and well versed in sastras."
aśvapṛṣṭhērathēnāgēkhaḍagēdhanuṣikarṣaṇē .

bhēdēsāntvē ca dānē ca nayēmantrē ca sammataḥ ।।6.71.29।।


aśvapṛṣṭhē best in riding on horseback, nāgērathē on elephant, khaḍagē in the use of sword, sāntvē ca and bow also, bhēdē sowing dissension, dānē ca in making charity, nayē in making peace, mantrē ca in statecraft, sammataḥ capable.

"He is best in riding on horseback, on elephant back and in the use of sword and bow. He is capable of sowing dissension, making peace, giving charity and statecraft."
yasyabāhūsamāśrityalaṅkāvasatinirbhayā .

tanayaṅdhānyamālinyāatikāyamimaṅviduḥ ।।6.71.30।।


yasya his, bāhum shoulders, samāśritya seeking refuge, laṅkā Lanka, nirbhayā fearless, vasati remains, imam he is, dhānyamālinyāḥ Dhanyamalini's, tanayam son, atikāyam Atikaya, viduḥ you may know.

"He is known as Atikaya, son of Dhanyamalini. Lanka remains fearless on his shoulders, you may know."
ētēnārādhitōbrahmōtapasābhāvitātmanā .

astrāṇicāpyavāptāniripavaścaparājitāḥ ।।6.71.31।।


tapasā by penance, bhāvitātmanā of supreme intellect, ētēna by him, brahmā Brahma, ārādhitaḥ propitiated, astrāṇi ca mystic missiles, avāptāni presented, ripavaśca enemies, parājitāḥ defeated.

"By penance on supreme self he propitiated Brahma, who blessed him with mystic missiles by way of boons by which his enemies were subdued."
surāsurairavadhyatvaṅdattamasmaisvayambhuvā .

ētaccakavacaṅdivyaṅradhaścaiṣō.rabhāsvaraḥ ।।6.71.32।।


svayambhūva self-born, asmai to him, surāsuraiḥ gods and demons, avadhyatvam exemption from death, dattam was given, ētat all this, divyam wonderful, kavacaṅ ca shield, rabhāsvaraḥ bright as the Sun, rathaśca chariot.

"Exemption from death from gods and demons was given to him and all this wonderful shield and chariot as bright as the sun."
ētēnaśataśōdēvādānavāścaparājitāḥ .

rakṣitāni ca rakṣāṅsiyakṣāścāpiniṣūditāḥ ।।6.71.33।।


ētēna by this, śataśaḥ hundreds, dēvāḥ Devatas, dānavāśca Danavas also, parājitāḥ defeated, yakṣāścā , Yakshas, rakṣitāni ca protected,, rakṣāṅsi Rakshasas, niṣūditāḥ killed.

"By this (boon) hundreds of Devatas and demons were defeated by him, Yakshas were killed, nay Rakshasas were protected."
vajraṅviṣṭambhitaṅyēnabāṇairindrasyadhīmataḥ .

pāśassalilarājasyaraṇēpratihatastathā ।।6.71.34।।

ēṣō.tikāyōbalavānrākṣasānāmatharṣabhaḥ .

rāvaṇasyatōdhīmāndēvadānavadarpahā ।।6.71.35।।


yēna by him, raṇē in battle, bāṇaiḥ arrows, dhīmataḥ wise, indrasya Indra's, vajram thunderbolt, viṣṭambhitam obstructed firmly, tathā likewise, salilarājasya Varuna's, pāśaḥ noose, pratihataḥ repelled, ēṣaḥ in that way, atikāyaḥ Atikaya, balavān strong, atha now, rākṣasānām Rakshasas, rṣabhaḥ bull yaḥ he who, dhīmān wise, rāvaṇasutaḥ Ravana's son, dēvadānavadarpahā subduer of the pride of Devas and Danavas.

"Here is strong Atikaya, a wise son of Ravana, bull among Rakshasas, who is a subduer of the pride of Devas and Danavas, by whom thunderbolt of Indra was obstructed firmly in battle and likewise the noose of Varuna was repelled in war."
tadasminkriyatāṅyatnaḥkṣipraṅpuruṣapuṅgava .

purāvānarasainyānikṣyaṅnayatisāyakaiḥ ।।6.71.36।।


puruṣapuṅgava best of men, tat therefore, asmin his, kṣipram quickly, yatnaḥ efforts, kriyatām be exhibited, vānarasainyāni Vanara army, sāyakaiḥ by arrows, kṣayaṅpurānayati before he puts an end.

"Oh, best of men! Quickly make efforts to put an end to him before he puts down Vanara army."
tatōtikāyōbalavānpraviśyaharivāhinīm .

viṣphārayāmāsadhanurnanāda ca punaḥpunaḥ ।।6.71.37।।


tataḥ thereafter, balavān mighty, atikāyaḥ Atikaya, harivāhinīm monkey army, praviśya entered, dhanuḥ bow, visphārayāmāsa twanged, punaḥpunaḥ again and again, nanāda ca made loud noise.

Thereafter, mighty Atikaya entered the monkey army, twanged his bow again and again and made a loud noise.
taṅbhīmavapuṣaṅdṛṣṭavārathasthaṅrathināṅvaram .

abhipēturmahātmānōyēpradhānāvanaukasaḥ ।।6.71.38।।


athastham seated, rathinām on the chariot, param supreme, bhīmavapuṣam dreadful enemy, tam him, dṛṣṭavā observing, pradhānāḥ foremost, mahātmānaḥ great, yē those, vanaukasaḥ Vanaras, abhipētuḥ rushed towards him.

Observing the dreadful enemy seated on the chariot, the foremost of the great Vanaras rushed towards him.
kumudōdvividōmaindōnīlaśśarabhaēva ca .

pādapairgiriśṛṅgaiścayugapatsamabhidravan ।।6.71.39।।


kumudaḥ Kumuda, dvividaḥ Dwivida, maindaḥ Mainda, nīlaḥ Neela, śarabhaḥēva ca even Sarabha, pādapaiḥ with trees, giriśṛṅgaiḥca and mountain peaks, yugapat assailed samabhidravan all at once.

Kumuda, Dwivida, Mainda, Neela, even Sarabha, all at once assailed him with trees and mountain peaks.
tēṣāṅvṛkṣāṅścaśailāṅścaśaraiḥkāñcanabhūṣaṇaiḥ .

atikāyōmahātējāścicchēdāstravidāṅvaraḥ ।।6.71.40।।


mahātējāḥ endowed with extraordinary energy, astravidām efficient in use of weapons, varaḥ foremost, atikāyaḥ Atikaya, kāñcanabhūṣaṇaiḥ adorned with gold, śaraiḥ arrows, tēṣām by that, vṛkṣānca trees, śailān ca and rocks, cicchēda shattered.

Atikaya, endowed with extraordinary energy, efficient in the use of weapons, shattered the trees and rocks hurled by the Vanaras with his arrows adorned with gold.
tāṅścaivasarvān sa harīn śaraissarvāyasairbalī .

vivyāthābhimukhassaṅkhyēbhīmakāyōniśācara ।।6.71.41।।


balī powerful, bhīmakāyaḥ of terrible form, niśācara night anger, saṅkhyē in the battlefield, abhimukhān facing, tān them, sarvān all, harīn monkeys, sarvāyasaiḥ iron, śaraiḥ arrows, vivyādha pierced.

The powerful night ranger of terrible form, pierced all monkeys who were facing him in the battlefield with iron arrows.
tē.rditāṅbāṇavarṣēṇabhinnagātrāḥplavaṅgamāḥ .

na śēkuratikāyasyapratikartuṅmahāraṇē ।।6.71.42।।


mahāraṇē great war, atikāyasya Atikaya's, bāṇavarṇēṇa by a hail of arrows, arditāḥ hard pressed, bhinnagātrāḥ limbs broken, tē they, plavaṅgamāḥ monkeys, pratikartum to resist, na śēkuḥ not possible.

The monkeys were hard pressed by Atikaya's hail of arrows. Their limbs broke and were unable to resist.
tat tsainyaṅharivīrāṇāṅtrāsayāmāsarākṣasaḥ .

mṛgayūthamivakruddhōhariryauvanadarpitaḥ ।।6.71.43।।


yauvanadarpitaḥ lion with youthful pride, rākṣasaḥ Rakshasa, kruddhaḥ enraged, hariḥ monkey, mṛgayūthamiva group of deer, harivīrāṇām monkey heroes, tat that, sainyam army, trāsayāmāsa struck.

Just as a young lion with youthful pride would strike a group of deer, the enraged Rakshasa struck the army of monkey heroes.
sarākṣasēndrōharisainyamadhyēnāyudhyamānaṅnijaghānakañcit .

upētyarāmaṅsadhama: kalāpī sa garvitaṅvākyamidaṅbabhāṣē ।।6.71.44।।


saḥ he, rākṣasēndraḥ Rakshasa Lord, harisainyamadhyē in the midst of monkey army, ayudhyamānam wielding weapon, kañcit indeed, nijāghāna not strike, sadhama: kalāpī armed with bow and quiver, saḥ he, upētya taking, rāmam Rama, garvitam with pride, idam this, vākyam words, babhāṣē spoke.

The Rakshasa lord, wielding a weapon in the midst of the monkey army, indeed did not strike any, but armed with bow and quiver went with pride towards Rama and spoke.
rathēsthitōhaṅśaracāpapāṇirnaprākṛtaṅkañcanayōdhayāmi .

yasyāstikaścidvyavasāyayuktōdadātumēkṣipramihādyayuddham ।।6.71.45।।


aham I, śaracāpapāṇiḥ with bow and arrow, rathē chariot, sthitaḥ seated, prākṛtam common warrior, kañcana indeed, nayōdhayāmi not give war, yasya to him kaścit indeed, asti now, vyavasāyayuktaḥ whoever is interested, adya now iha here, kṣipram speedily, mē to me, yuddham fight, dadātu give me.

"I am with a bow and arrow seated in the chariot. Indeed, I am not strong in fighting with common warriors. Whoever is interested to fight now can come speedily to fight with me."
tattasyavākyaṅbruvatōniśamyacukōpasaumitriramitrahantā .

amṛṣyamāṇaścasamutpapātajagrāhacāpaṅ ca tatassmayitvā ।।6.71.46।।


bruvataḥ having spoken, tasya his, vākyam that word, niśamya hearing, amitrahantā destroyer of enemies, saumitriḥ Saumithri, cukōpa in anger, tataḥ then, smayitvā not enduring, amṛṣyamāṇaḥ not able to tolerate, samutpapāta went towards, cāpam sword, jagrāha took up.

On hearing Atikaya, Saumithri the destroyer of enemies, became angry, not enduring and not able to tolerate went towards him taking a sword.
kruddhassaumitrirutpatyatūṇādākṣipyasāyakam .

purastādatikāyasyavicakarṣamahaddhanuḥ ।।6.71.47।।


kruddhaḥ furious. saumitriḥ Saumithri, utpatya springing up, tūṇāt from quiver, sāyakam arrow, ākṣipya stretching, atikāyasya full length, purastāt before, mahat great, dhanuḥ bow, cakarṣa discharged.

Furious Saumithri, springing up, took up his arrow from the quiver, stretching to full length before he discharged the arrow.
pūrayan sa mahīṅśailānākāśaṅsāgaraṅdiśaḥ .

jyāśabdōlakṣmaṇasyōgrastrāsayan rajanīcarān ।।6.71.48।।


lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, saḥ that, jyāśabdaḥ sound of twang, śailān mountains, mahīm earth, ākāśam sky, sāgaram ocean, diśaḥ directions, pūrayan filled, rajanīcarān night ranger, trāsayan terror, ugraḥ terrible.

The twang of Lakshmana filled the mountains, earth, ocean, and all directions striking terrible fear in the night ranger.
saumitrēścāpanirghōṣaṅśrutvāpratibhayaṅtadā .

visiṣmiyēmahātējārākṣasēndrātmajōbalī ।।6.71.49।।


tadā then, balī powerful, mahātējāḥ extraordinary energetic, rākṣasēndrātmajaḥ Rakshasa king's son, pratibhayam in turn frightened, saumitrēḥ Saumithri's, cāpanirghōṣam sound of his bow, śrutvā hearing, visiṣmiyē astonished.

Then the extraordinarily energetic and powerful son of Rakshasa king was in turn frightened at the sound of Saumithri's bow and was astonished.
athātikāyaḥkupitōdṛṣṭavālakṣmaṇamutthitam .

ādāyaniśitaṅbāṇamidaṅvacanamabravīt ।।6.71.50।।


athā and then, utthitam sprang up, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, dṛṣṭavā seeing, atikāyaḥ Atikaya, kupitaḥ angry, niśitam sharp, bāṇam shaft, ādāya taking, idaṅvacanam these words, abravīt spoke.

Seeing Atikaya, furious Lakshmana sprang up and took a sharp shaft and spoke as follows.
bālastvamasisaumitrēvikramēṣvavicakṣaṇaḥ .

gacchakiṅkālasadṛśaṅmāṅyōdhayatumicchasi ।।6.71.51।।


saumitrē O! Saumithri, tvam you, vikramēṣu are valiant, avicakṣaṇaḥ not discriminative, asi are, bālaḥ young, kālasadṛśam equal to death, mām I am, yōdhayitum to combat with, kim why, icchasi do you desire.

"O Saumithri! You are valiant but young, not able to discriminate. I am equal to the Lord of death. Why do you desire to comb at with me?"
na himadbāhusṛṣṭānāmastrāṇāhimavānapi .

sōḍhumutsahatēvēgamantarikṣamathōmahī ।।6.71.52।।


madbāhusṛṣṭānām discharged by my arm, āstrāṇām shafts, vēgam speed, himanānapi even Himalayas, sōḍhum force, na utsahatēhi not able to bear, antarikṣam sky, athō on the other hand, mahī earth.

The shafts discharged from my arm can't be borne, by the Himalayas, even the atmosphere between the sky and earth can't bear the force.
sukhaprasuptaṅkālāgniṅvibōdhayitumicchasi .

nyasyacāpaṅnivartasvamāprāṇān jahimadgataḥ ।।6.71.53।।


sukhaprasuptam sleeping comfortably, kālāgnim fire of dissolution, vibōdhayitum why do you arouse, icchasi desire, cāpam bow, nyasya casting away, nivartasva return back, madgataḥ confronting me prāṇān life, mājahi go away.

"Why do you want to arouse the fire of dissolution sleeping comfortably? Return, casting away your bow, without confronting. Go away."
athavātvaṅpratiṣṭabdhō na nivartitumicchasi .

tiṣṭhaprāṇān parityajyagamiṣyasiyamakṣyam ।।6.71.54।।


athavā or else, tvam you, pratiṣṭabdhaḥ you want to oppose, nivartitum to return, na icchasi not wish, tiṣṭha stay, prāṇān life, parityajya giving up, yamakṣyam Yama's abode, gamiṣyasi proceed.

"Or else if you want to oppose and not return, give up your life and proceed to Yama's abode."
paśyamēniśitānbāṇānaridarpaniṣūdanān .

īśvarāyudhasaṅkāśāṅstaptakāñcanabhūṣaṇān ।।6.71.55।।


mē my, naridarpaniṣūdanān capable of reducing the ride of enemy, īśvarāyudhasaṅkāśān like the Ishwara's trident, taptakāñcanabhūṣaṇān ornamented with polished gold, niśitān sharp, bāṇān shafts, paśya see.

"See my sharp shafts capable of reducing enemy's pride like Ishwara's trident, ornamented with polished gold."
ēṣatēsarpasaṅkāśōbāṇaḥpāsyatiśōṇitam .

mṛgarājaivakruddhōnāgarājasyaśōṇitam ।।6.71.56।।

ityēvamuktvāsaṅkruddhaśśaraṅdhanuṣisaṅdadhē .


sarpasaṅkāśaḥ like serpents, ēṣaḥbāṇāḥ these arrows, kruddhaḥ angry, mṛgarājaḥ lion, nāgarājasya elephant's, śōṇitam blood, tē to you, śōṇitam blood, pāsyati drink, ityēvam therefore, uktvā told, saṅkruddhaḥ furious, śaram arrow, dhanuṣi bow, saṅdadhē fixed.

"These arrows are like serpents and can drink your blood just as an angry lion drinks the blood of elephants. Therefore, I tell you", said Atikaya to Lakshmana."
śrutvātikāyasyavacassarōṣaṅsagarvitaṅsamyatirājaputraḥ .

sa sañcukōpātibalōmanasvīruvācavākyaṅ ca tatōmahārtham ।।6.71.57।।


rājaputraḥ prince, samyati fitted, atikāyasya Atikaya, sarōṣam in wrath, sagarvitam proud, vacaḥ utterance, śrutvā hearing, sañcukōpa enraged, atibalaḥ very strong, manasvī high minded, mahārtham great meaning, saḥ he, tataḥ those, vākyam words, uvāca spoke.

Prince Atikaya, having spoken as said before, fitted his bow in wrath. Hearing the proud statement of Atikaya, the high-minded Lakshmana, endowed with strength, enraged, and spoke these words of great meaning.
na vākyamātrēṇabhavān pradhānō na katthanātsatpuruṣābhavanti .

mayisthitēdhanvinibāṇapāṇaunidarśayasvātmabalaṅdurātman ।।6.71.58।।


durātman evil minded, bhavān you are, vākyamātrēṇa by mere statement, pradhānaḥ chief, na not, katthanāt speech, satpuruṣāḥ good people, na bhavanti not do, dhanvini bow, bāṇapāṇau armed with a bow, sthitē stand, mayi my, ātmabalam your strength, nidarśayasya prove.

"You are evil minded. By mere statement you people can't become good chiefs. I stand armed with a bow and arrow. Prove your strength."
karmaṇāsūcayātmānaṅ na vikatthitumarhasi .

pauruṣēṇatuyōyuktassatuśūraitismṛtaḥ ।।6.71.59।।


karmaṇā by action, ātmānam yourself, sūcaya indicated, vikatthitum reveal, na arhasi not deserve, yaḥ he who, pauruṣēṇa with prowess, yuktaḥ right, saḥ he, śūraḥiti is a hero, smṛtaḥ are known as.

"Reveal yourself by action not by indication. You do not deserve it. He who is with prowess is a right hero."
sarvāyudhasamāyuktōdhanvītvaṅrathamāsthitaḥ .

śarairvāyadivāpyastrairdarśayasvaparākramam ।।6.71.60।।


tvam you, dhanvī bow, sarvāyudhasamāyuktaḥ collecting all kinds of weapons, ratham chariot, āsthitaḥ seated, śaraiḥvā with arrows, yadivāpi by that alone, astrai: weapons, parākramam capable, darśayasya show.

"You are seated in the chariot with all kinds of weapons collected. By that alone you do not become capable. Show your capacity."
tataśśirastēniśitaiḥpātayiṣyāmyahaṅśaraiḥ .

mārutaḥkālasampakvaṅvṛntāttāḷaphalaṅyathā ।।6.71.61।।


tataḥ then, aham I, niśitaiḥ sharp, śaraiḥ arrows, tēśiraḥ his head, mārutaḥ wind, kālasampakvam in the process of time when ripened, tāḷaphalam palm fruit, vṛntāt yathā drops, pātayiṣyāmi will throw.

"Then I will strike down his head with sharp arrows and throw him just as ripened palm fruit drops in the process of time."
adyatēmāmakābāṇāstaptakāñcanabhūṣaṇāḥ .

pāsyantirudhiraṅgātrādbāṇaśalyāntarōtthitam ।।6.71.62।।


adya now, taptakāñcanabhūṣaṇāḥ decked with polished gold, māmakāḥ my bāṇāḥ arrows, tēgātrāt from your neck, bāṇaśalyāntarōtthitam by the holes made by pointed arrows, rudhiram blood, pāsyanti will drink.

"Now, you will drink the blood ejected from your neck by the holes made with my pointed arrows decked with polished gold."
bālō.yamitivijñāya na māvajñātumarhasi .

bālōvāyadivāvṛddhōmṛtyuṅjānīhisaṅyugē ।।6.71.63।।

bālēnaviṣṇunālōkāstrayaḥkrāntāstrivikramaiḥ .


ayam this, bālaḥ young, iti thus, vijñāya victory, avajñātum underestimate, na ca arhasi not know, bālōvā being young, vṛddhōvā or old, saṅyugē in battle, mṛtyum death, jānīhi not know, bālēna by being young, viṣṇuvā Vishnu, trivikramaiḥ Trivikrama, trayaḥ three, lōkāḥ worlds, krāntāḥ going.

"You should not underestimate me thinking I am young or old to win. You do not know that I am spirit of death in battle. Did not Vishnu as young Trivikrama win the three worlds going by three strides?"
lakṣmaṇasyavacaśśrutvāhētumatparamārthavat ।।6.71.64।।

atikāyaḥpracukrōdhabāṇaṅcōttamamādadē .


lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, hētumat reasoning, paramārthavat full of truth, vacaḥ words, śrutvā hearing, atikāyaḥ Atikaya, pracukrōdha very furious, uttamam best of, bāṇam arrows, ādadē ca took.

On hearing the words of Lakshmana, which was reasonable and full of truth, Atikaya became furious and took up the best of arrows.
tatōvidyādharābhūtādēvādaityāmaharṣayaḥ ।।6.71.65।।

guhyakāścamahātmānastadyuddhaṅdraṣṭumāgaman .


tataḥ then, vidyādharāḥ Vidhyadhara, bhūtāḥ Demons, dēvāḥ Devas, daityāḥ Daityas, maharṣayaḥ Sages, mahātmānaḥ great people, guhyakāḥ ca Guhyakas, tadā then, tat there, yuddham battlefield, draṣṭumāgaman arrived to witness.

Then vidhyadharas, demons, devatas, daityas, sages and great guhyakas arrived at the battlefield to witness.
tō.tikāyaḥkupitaścāpamārōpyasāyakam ।।6.71.66।।

lakṣmaṇāyapracikṣēpasaṅkṣipannivacāmbaram .


tataḥ then, atikāyaḥ Atikaya, kupitaḥ enraged, sāyakam arrows, cāpam to bow, ārōpya fixing, ambaram sky, saṅkṣipam iva as if discharging it in the sky, lakṣmaṇāya at Lakshmana, pracikṣēpa directed.

Then enraged Atikaya, fixing his arrow to the bow as if discharging it in the sky directed at Lakshmana.
tamāpatantaṅniśitaṅśaramāśīviṣōpamam ।।6.71.67।।

ardhacandrēṇacicchēdalakṣmaṇaḥparavīrahā .


paravīrahā heroic destroyer of enemies, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, āpatantam coming towards, āśīviṣōpamam venomous serpent like arrow, niśitam sharp, taṅśaram that arrow, ardhacandrēṇa half- moon shaped, cicchēda shattered.

Lakshmana, the heroic destroyer of enemies, shattered the venomous serpent like arrow with his sharp half- moon shaped arrow.
taṅnikṛttaṅśaraṅdṛṣṭavākṛttabhōgamivōragam ।।6.71.68।।

atikāyōbhṛśaṅkruddhaḥpañcabāṇān samādadē .


atikāyaḥ Atikaya, kṛttabhōgam torn asunder, uragam iva like serpent, nikṛttam offended, taṅśaram that arrow, dṛṣṭavā seeing, bhṛśam , kruddhaḥ angry, pañca five, bāṇān arrows, samādadē fitted.

Seeing the arrow torn asunder like a serpent, Atikaya was offended and became very angry and fitted five arrows to his bow.
tānśarān sampracikṣēpalakṣmaṇāyaniśācaraḥ ।।6.71.69।।

tānaprāptān śaraistīkṣṇaiścicchēdabharatānujaḥ .


niśācaraḥ night ranger, tān śarān those arrows, lakṣmaṇāya at Lakshmana, sampracikṣēpa loosed with force, bharatānujaḥ Bharata's brother, tān them, aprāptān before reaching, śaraiḥ arrows, tīkṣṇaiḥ sharp, cicchēda shattered.

The night ranger set loose those arrows at Lakshmana, Bharata's brother. Lakshmana shattered them even before it reached him.
satān chittvāśitairbāṇairlakṣmaṇaḥparavīrahā ।।6.71.70।।

ādadēniśitaṅbāṇaṅjvalantamivatējasā .


paravīrahā heroic destroyer of foes, saḥlakṣmaṇaḥ that Lakshmana, tān them, śitaiḥ sharp, bāṇaiḥ arrows, chittvā split, tējasā bright, jvalantami flaming, niśitam sharp, bāṇam arrow, ādadē seized.

Lakshmana, the heroic destroyer of foes, having split those arrows, seized a shaft which was a bright and sharp flaming arrow.
tamādāyadhanuśśrēṣṭhēyōjayāmāsalakṣmaṇaḥ ।।6.71.71।।

vicakarṣa ca vēgēnavisasarja ca vīryavān .


lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, vīryavān valiant, dhanuśśrēṣṭhē foremost of the wielders of bow, yōjayāmāsa stretching, vēgēna quickly, vicakarṣa ca till the ear, visasarja ca discharged.

Valiant Lakshmana, foremost of the wielders of bow stretching his bow till the ear, quickly discharged the arrow.
pūrṇāyatavisṛṣēnaśarēṇanataparvaṇā ।।6.71.72।।

lalāṭērākṣasaśrēṣṭhamājaghāna sa vīryavān .


vīryavāna heroic, saḥ he, pūrṇāyatavisṛṣēna fully stretching, nataparvaṇā bending to curvature, śarēṇa the arrow, rākṣasaśrēṣṭham foremost of the Rakshasas, lalāṭē forehead, ājaghāna struck.

The heroic Lakshmana fully stretching the arrow bending to curvature struck Atikaya, the foremost of Rakshasas on his forehead.
salalāṭēśarōmagnastasyabhīmasyarakṣasaḥ ।।6.71.73।।

dadṛśēśōṇitēnāktaḥpannagēndraivācalē .


bhīmasya terrific, tasyarakṣasaḥ that Rakshasa, lalāṭē forehead, magnaḥ stuck on top, aktaḥ said, saḥ he, śaraḥ arrow, acalē mountain, pannagēndraḥiva like serpent, dadṛśē seemed.

That arrow stuck on the forehead of the terrific Rakshasa looked like a serpent on a mountain.
rākṣasaḥpracakampē ca lakṣmaṇēṣuprapīḍitaḥ ।।6.71.74।।

rudrabāṇahataṅghōraṅyathātripuragōpuram .


atha now, lakṣmaṇēṣuprapīḍitaḥ tormented by Lakshmana's arrow, rākṣasaḥ Rakshasa, rudrabāṇahatam as though struck by arrow of Rudra, ghōram dreadful, tripuragōpuraṅyathā like the gate of Tripura, pracakampē shaken.

Now tormented by Lakshmana's arrow the Rakshasa was shaken dreadfully like the gate of Tripura (the city built of gold, silver, and iron in heaven, in space and earth by Maya and burnt by Rudra).
cintayāmāsacāśvāsyavimṛśya ca mahābalaḥ ।।6.71.75।।

sādhubāṇanipātēnaślāghanīyō.simēripuḥ .


mahābalaḥ extra ordinary mighty, āśvāsya recovering, vimṛśya reflecting, cintayāmāsa contemplated, sādhu course of action, bāṇanipātēna releasing the arrow, mē me, ślāghanīyaḥ worthy of praise, ripuḥ enemy, asi you are.

Recovering from the hurt and reflecting, the Rakshasa contemplated the course of action, and said 'By releasing the arrow on me you are an enemy worthy of praise."
vidhāyaivaṅvinamyāsyaṅniyamya ca bhujāvubhau ।।6.71.76।।

sa rathōpasthamāsthāyarathēnapracacāra ha .


ēvam in that way, vidhāya knowing, āsyam face, vinamya bending, bhujāvubhau both shoulders, niyamya ca setting right, saḥ he, rathōpastham on the rear of the chariot, āsthāya settled, rathēna from chariot, pracacāra ha started to move.

Having spoken that way bending his face setting both shoulders right, he settled at the rear end of the chariot started to move from the chariot.
kaṅtrīnpañcasaptētisāyanrākṣasarṣabhaḥ ।।6.71.77।।

ādadēsandadhēcāpivicakarṣōtsasarja ca .


rākṣasarṣabhaḥ bull among Rakshasas, ēkam one, trīn three, pañca five, saptēti seven, sāyakān arrows, ādadē taking, sandadhēcāpi fixing to the bow, vicakarṣa stretching, utsasarjaca and released.

The bull among the Rakshasas taking, one, three, five and seven arrows, fixing them to the bow stretching released.
tēbāṇāḥkālasaṅkāśārākṣasēndradhunuścyutāḥ ।।6.71.78।।

hēmapuṅkhāraviprakhyāścakrurdīptamivāmbaram .


rākṣasēndradhanuścyutāḥ arrows released from Rakshasa's bow, kālasaṅkāśāḥ like the spirit of time, hēmapuṅkhāḥ with gold feathered, raviprakhyāḥ shone like the Sun, tē they, ambaram sky, dīptam iva glowing like, cakruḥ made.

The gold feathered arrows released from the rakshasas's bow, were like death arrows which shone in the sky as if the sky was glowing.
tastānrākṣasōtsṛṣṭānśaraughānrāghavānujaḥ ।।6.71.79।।

asambrāntaḥpracicchēdaniśitairbahubhiśśaraiḥ .


tataḥ then, rāghavānujaḥ Raghava's brother, rākṣasōtsatsṛṣṭān released by the Rakshasa, tān them, śaraughān volley of arrows, asaṅbhrāntaḥ unconfounded, niśitaiḥ sharp, bahubhiḥ many, śaraiḥ arrows, pracicchēda shattered.

Raghava's brother remained unconfounded and then he shattered the volley of many sharp arrows released by the Rakshasa.
tān śarānyudhisamprēkṣyanikṛttānrāvaṇātmajaḥ ।।6.71.80।।

cukōpatridaśēndrārirjagrāhaniśitaṅśaram .


tridaśēndrāri Enemy of Indra, rāvaṇātmajaḥ Ravana's son, yudhi in battle, nikṛttān ineffective, tān śarān all kinds of arrows, samprēkṣya observing cupōpa angry, niśitam sharp, śaram arrow, jagrāha took up.

Ravana's son, an enemy of Indra, observing that all arrows have been ineffective, took up another sharp arrow.
sasandhāyamahātējāstaṅbāṇaṅsahasōtsṛjat ।।6.71.81।।

tēnassaumitrimāyāntamājaghānastanāntarē .


mahātējāḥ very energetic, saḥ he, tam his, bāṇam arrow, sandhāya fixing, sahasā forcibly, utsṛjat released, tēna by that, āyāntam , saumitrim Saumithri's, stanāntarē between is breast, ājaghāna pierced.

Highly energetic Atikaya, fixing another arrow released it between the breasts of Saumithri and pierced.
atikāyēnasaumitristāḍitōyudhivakṣasi ।।6.71.82।।

susrāvarudhiraṅtīvraṅmadaṅmattaivadvipaḥ .


yudhi in battle, atikāyēna by Atikaya, vakṣasi chest, tāḍitaḥ hurt, saumitriḥ Saumithri, mattaḥ in rut dvipaḥ elephant, madam iva like the fluid, tīvram swiftly, rudhiram blood, susrāva flowed.

In the battle, Saumithri was hurt in the chest by Atikaya's arrow and blood flowed like the ichor from elephant in rut.
sacakāratadātmānaṅviśalyaṅsahasāvibhuḥ ।।6.71.83।।

jagrāha ca śaraṅtīkṣṇamastrēṇāpicasandadhē .


vibhuḥ glorious, saḥ he, tadā then, ātmānam stuck in his body, sahasā forcibly, viśalyam noble, cakāra seized, tīkṣaṇam pointed, śaram arrow, jagrāha removed, astrēṇapi also with mystic spell, sandadhē ca pulled out.

He (Lakshmana) being glorious and noble himself seized hold of the pointed arrow stuck in his body and removed it with a mystic spell.
āgnēyēnatadā.strēṇayōjayāmāsasāyakam ।।6.71.84।।

sa jajvālatadābāṇōdhanuṣyasyamahātmanaḥ .


tadā then, āgnēyēnaastrēṇa with the missile presided over by fire god, sāyakam arrow, yōjayāmāsa concentration of the mind fixed, mahātmanaḥ great self, asya his, bāṇaḥ arrow, dhanuṣya bow.

Then Lakshmana by concentration of his mind fixed on fire god which presided over the arrow, that great self-fixed in his bow glowed.
atikāyōtitējasvīsauramastraṅsamādadhē ।।6.71.85।।

tēnabāṇaṅbhujaṅgābhaṅhēmapuṅkhamayōjayat .


atitējasvī highly energetic, atikāyaḥ Atikaya, sauram astram weapon presided over by Sun god, samādadē fixing, bhujaṅgābham similar to serpent, hēmapuṅkham with gold feathers, taṅbāṇam that arrow, tēna by that, ayōjayat fixed it.

Highly energetic Atikaya took a serpent-like arrow with gold feathers and charged it by the concentration of his mind on the power of Sun god.
tadastraṅjvalitaṅghōraṅlakṣmaṇaśśaramāhitam ।।6.71.86।।

atikāyāyacikṣēpakāladaṇḍamivāntakaḥ .


lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, jvalitam glowing, ghōram fierce, tat that, astram missile, āhitam placed, śaram arrow, antakaḥ death, kāladaṇḍamiva like the staff of god of death, atikāyāya at Atikaya, cikṣēpa shattered.

Lakshmana placed that fierce, glowing missile looking like the staff of God of death on Atikaya.
āgnēyēnābhisaṅyuktaṅdṛṣṭavābāṇaṅniśācaraḥ ।।6.71.87।।

utsasarjatadābāṇaṅdīptaṅsūryāstrayōjitam .


niśācaraḥ night ranger, āgnēyāstrābhisaṅyuktam united with the missile of fire god, bāṇam arrow, dṛṣṭavā seeing, tadā then, sūryāstrayōjitam united with the charge of sun god, dīptam glowing, bāṇam arrow, utsasarja released on him.

The night ranger, seeing the missile charged with fire god coming towards him, released the glowing arrow charged with the power of Sun god.
tāvubhāvambarēbāṇāvanyōnyamabhijaghnatuḥ ।।6.71.88।।

tējasāsaṅpradīptāgraukruddhāvivabhujaṅgamau .


tējasā effulgent, saṅpradīptāgrau flaming with fire, tau those, ubhau two, bāṇau arrows, kruddhau angry, bhujaṅgamauiva serpents like, anyōnyam one another, ambarē sky, abhijaghnatuḥ struck violently.

Both the arrows effulgent, flaming with fire, were like angry serpents in the sky striking one another violently.
tāvanyōnyaṅvinirdahyapētaturdharaṇītalē ।।6.71.89।।

nirarciṣaubhasmakṛtau na bhrājētēśarōttamau .

tāvubhaudīpyamānausma na bhrājētēmahītalē ।।6.71.90।।


tau those two, anyōnyam one another, vinirdahya burning themselves, pṛthivītalē on the earth surface, pētatuḥ fallen, nirarciṣau with no life, bhasmakṛtau burnt to ashes, śarōttamau best of arrows, na bhrājētē not shine, dīpyamānau glowing, tau those, ubhau two, mahītalē on the ground, na bhrājētē not.

Those two burning one another and themselves burning had fallen on the earth surface with no fire. Those two best of arrows though glowing, having fallen on earth did not shine as they ceased to emit flames and had been reduced to ashes.
tatō.tikāyassaṅkṛddhastvastramaiṣīkamutsṛjat .

tatpracicchēdasaumitrirastramaindrēṇavīryavān ।।6.71.91।।


tataḥ then, atikāyaḥ Atikaya, saṅkṛddhaḥ seized with anger, tvāṣṭram Twashta, aiṣīkam Ishikam, utsṛjat discharged, tataḥ then, vīryavān valiant, saumitriḥ Saumithri, aindrēṇa presided by Indra, astram arrow, cicchēda split.

Then Atikaya seized with anger discharged Ishikam presided over by Twashta (the architect of gods). Saumithri then split the arrow with one presided by Indra and split Ishikam.
aiṣīkaṅnihataṅdṛṣṭavāruṣitōrāvaṇātmajaḥ .

yāmyēnārstēṇasaṅkṛddhōyōjayāmāsasāyakam ।।6.71.92।।


ruṣitaḥ annoyed, rāvaṇātmajaḥ Son of Ravana, aiṣīkam Ishikam, nihatam having been destroyed, dṛṣṭavā seeing, saṅkṛddhaḥ enraged, sāyakam arrow, yāmyēna of Yama, astrēṇa arrow, yōjayāmāsa struck.

Annoyed by his arrow Ishikam being struck, Atikaya, son of Ravana charged Lakshmana's arrow with an arrow presided over by Yama.
tatastadastraṅcikṣēpalakṣmaṇāyaniśācaraḥ .

vāyavyēnatadastrēṇanijaghāna sa lakṣmaṇaḥ ।।6.71.93।।


tataḥ then, niśācaraḥ night ranger, tat that, astram arrow, lakṣmaṇāya Lakshmana,cikṣēpa shattered, saḥlakṣmaṇaḥ that Lakshmana, tat that, vāyavyēnaastrēṇa arrow presided by Vayu, nijaghāna charged.

Then the night ranger shattered the arrow of Lakshmana and in turn released an arrow presided by Vayu.
athainaṅśaradhārābhirdhārābhirivatōyadaḥ .

abhyavarṣatsusaṅkṛddhōlakṣmaṇōrāvaṇātmajam ।।6.71.94।।


atha and then, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, saṅkṛddhaḥ enraged, ēnam it, rāvaṇātmajam Ravana's son, tōyadaḥ water, dhārābhiḥiva rainy cloud, śaradhārābhiḥ showered arrows, abhyavarṣata heavy torrents.

And then enraged Lakshmana covered with water like a rainy cloud would shower with torrents.
tē.tikāyaṅsamāsādyakavacēvajrabhūṣitē .

bhagnāgraśalyāssahasāpēturbāṇāmahītalē ।।6.71.95।।


tē those, bāṇāḥ arrows, atikāyam Atikaya, samāsādya on touching, vajrabhūṣitē like diamond like body, kavacē covering, bhagnāgraśalyāḥ broken his coat of iron nails touching the body, sahasā with force, mahītalē on ground, pētuḥ fallen.

On those arrows touching Atikaya's diamond like body, the pointed arrows shattered the coat covering the body and the broken coat of nails had fallen down.
tānmōghānabhisamprēkṣyalakṣmaṇaḥparavīrahā .

abhyavarṣanmahēṣūṇāṅsahasrēṇamahāyaśāḥ ।।6.71.96।।


paravīrahā subduer of enemies, mahāyaśāḥ of great fame, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, tān them, mōghān useless, abhisamprēkṣya looking at them, mahēṣūṇām mighty, sahasrēṇa thousand, abhyavarṣata rained.

Lakshmana of great fame, subduer of enemy looking at the arrows becoming useless mighty hero released thousand arrows.
sa vṛṣyamāṇōbāṇaughairatikāyōmahābalaḥ .

avadhyakavacassaṅkhyērākṣasōnaivavivyathē ।।6.71.97।।


bāṇaughaiḥ covered with arrows, vṛṣyamāṇaḥ showered down, mahābalaḥ mighty, avadhyakavacaḥ shield that impenetrable, rākṣasaḥ Rakshasa, atikāyaḥ Atikaya, saṅkhyē in battlefield, vivyathē not felt tormented.

Though covered with arrows showered on him, mighty Rakshasa Atikaya had an impenetrable shield in the battlefield and could not feel the torment.
śaraṅcāśīviṣākāraṅlakṣmaṇāyavyapāsṛjat .

sa tēnaviddhassaumitrirmarmadēśēśarēṇa ha ।।6.71.98।।

muhūrtamātraṅnissaṅjñōhyabhavacchatrutāpanaḥ .


āśīviṣākāram resembling a poisonous serpent, śaram arrow, lakṣmaṇāya at Lakshmana, vyapāsṛjat , rmarmadēśē vital part, tēnaśarēṇa by that arrow, viddhaḥ knowing, śatrutāpanaḥ tormentor of foes, saḥsaumitriḥ that Saumithri, muhūrtamātram for a short while, nissaṅjña lost consciousness, abhavat became.

Atikaya released an arrow resembling a poisonous serpent at Lakshmana. Pierced in vital part Saumithri, the tormentor of the enemy lost consciousness for a while.
tataḥssaṅjñāmupālabhyacaturbhissāyakōttamaiḥ ।।6.71.99।।

nijaghānahayānsaṅkhyēsārathiṅ ca mahābalaḥ .

dhvajasyōnmathanaṅkṛtvāśaravarṣairarindamaḥ ।।6.71.100।।


tataḥ then, mahābalaḥ mighty, arindamaḥ subduer of enemies, saṅjñām regaining senses, upālabhya getting up, śaravarṣaiḥ rain of arrows, dhvajasya chariot pole, unmathanam uplifted, kṛtvā destroying, caturbhiḥ four, sāyakōttamaiḥ best arrows, saṅkhyē in the battlefield, sārathim charioteer, hayān horses, nijaghāna struck down.

Then mighty subduer of enemies, regaining senses, getting up destroyed the chariot pole with rain of arrows. Taking up four best arrows he struck down the chariot, charioteer, and the horses.
asambhrāntassasaumitristānśarānabhilakṣitān .

mumōcalakṣmaṇōbāṇānvadhārthaṅtasyarakṣasaḥ ।।6.71.101।।


saumitriḥ Saumithri, saḥlakṣmaṇaḥ that Lakshmana, asambhrāntaḥ inflict injury, abhilakṣitān desiring, tān śarān those arrows, tasyarakṣasaḥ of that Rakshasa, vadhārtham for killing, mumōca wishing.

Saumithri, son of Sumithra, was not able to inflict injury on that Rakshasa with those arrows, though desiring to kill him.
na śaśākarujaṅkartuṅyudhitasyanarōttamaḥ .

athainamabhyupāgamyavāyurvākyamuvāca ha ।।6.71.102।।


narōttamaḥ best of men, yudhi in battle, rujam to injure, kartum to do, na śaśāka not be killed, atha now, vāyuḥ Vayu, ēnam in that way, upāgamya having come, vākyam words, uvāca ha spoke to him.

Wind god (Vayu) having come to the best of men, Lakshmana, spoke to him that in battle it is not possible to injure him or kill him.
brahmadattavarōhyēṣaavadhyakavacāvṛtaḥ .

brāhmēṇāstrēṇabhnithyēnamēṣavadhyōhinānyathā ।।6.71.103।।

avadhyaēṣahyanyēṣāmastrāṇāṅkavacībalī .


brahmadattavaraḥ by the boon given by Brahma, ēṣaḥ in that way, avadhyakavacāvṛtaḥ covered by armour which can't be broken, ēnam therefore, brāhmēṇaastrēṇa by Brahma's weapon, bhidhani strike, ēṣaḥ because, anyathā other, vadhyaḥ to kill, na not, kavacī armour, balī strong, ēṣaḥ in that way, anyēṣām with any other, astrāṇām by other weapon, avadhyaḥ not possible to kill.

By the boon given by Brahma his body is covered with armour which can't be broken. By Brahma's weapon only you can strike to kill him because of his armour and might. By any other weapon it is not possible to kill him.
tatastuvāyōrvacanaṅniśamyasaumitririndrapratimānavīryaḥ .

samādadēbāṇamamōghavēgaṅtadbrāhmamastraṅsahasāniyōjya ।।6.71.104।।


tataḥ then, indrapratimānavīryaḥ equal to Indra in valiance, saumitriḥ Saumithri, vāyōḥ Wind god, vacanam words, niśamya hearing, atha now, tat that, brāhmam astram pressing Brahma weapon to serve, sahasā with force niyōjya charged, āmōghavēgam terrific speed, bāṇam arrow, samādadhē went, tasmin varāstrētu while being fixed into the arrows.

Then Saumithri who is equal to Indra hearing wind god's words invoked Brahma's weapon into service. While he was charging into his arrows and fixing the arrow went at terrific speed.
niyujyamānēsaumitriṇābāṇavarēśitāgrē .

diśaścacandrarkamahāgrahāścanabhaścatatrāsacacālacōrvī ।।6.71.105।।


saumitriṇaā Saumithri, śitāgrē sharp pointed tip, bāṇavarē best, tasmin that, varāstrē foremost arrow niyujyamānē charged, diśaḥ ca directions, candrārkamahāgrahāśca moon and Sun and other planets, nabhaśca sky, tatrāsa feared, ūrvīca earth, cacāla shook.

As Saumithri charged the sharp pointed foremost arrow, the directions, moon, Sun and other planets and the sky, earth, and all space shook.
taṅbrahmaṇō.strēṇaniyujyacāpēśaraṅsupuṅkhaṅyamadūtakalpam .

saumitririndrārisutasyatasyasasarjabāṇaṅyudhivajrakalpam ।।6.71.106।।


saumitriḥ Saumithri, supuṅkham golden feathered, yamadūtakalpam like the messenger of death, taṅśaram that arrow, cāpē shaft, brahmaṇaḥastrēṇa by the Brahma's arrow, niyujya charged, vajrakalpam like thunderbolt, bāṇam arrow, tasya its, andrārisutasya son of Indra's enemy, sasarja released.

Golden feathered arrow, which resembled thunderbolt, was released on Atikaya, enemy of Indra for whom it was like a messenger of death. It was charged with Brahma's mystic by Saumithri and released on fixing it.
taṅlakṣmaṇōtsṛṣṭamamōghavēgaṅsamāpatantaṅjyalanaprakāśam .

suparṇavajrōttamacitrapuṅkhaṅtadā.tikāyassamarēdadarśa ।।6.71.107।।


tadā then, lakṣmaṇōtsṛṣṭamamōghavēgam which possessed the velocity of wind, jvalanaprakāśam emitting sparks, suparṇavajrōttamacitrapuṅkham feathers resembling wings of Garuda, samāpatantam coming at speed, tam those, atikāyaḥ Atikaya, samarē in battle, dadarśa saw.

Atikaya saw the arrow of Lakshmana coming at a speed, which possessed the velocity of the wind, fixed with feathers resembling the wings of Garuda in the battle.
taṅprēkṣamāṇassahasā.tikāyōjaghānabāṇairniśitairanēkaiḥ .

sa sāyakastasyasuparṇavēgastadātikāyasyajagāmapārśvam ।।6.71.108।।


atikāyaḥ Atikaya, tam those, prēkṣamāṇaṅsahasā as he was looking, anēkaiḥ many, niśitaiḥ sharp, bāṇaiḥ arrows, jaghāna moving, suparṇavēgaḥ at the speed of Garuda, tasya its, saḥsāyakaḥ that, tathā like that, atikāyasya towards Atikaya, pārśvam side, jagāma reached.

As Atikaya was looking at the arrow, Lakshmana struck many arrows forcibly with sharp arrows possessing the speed of Garuda. The arrows reached towards Atikaya.
tamāgataṅprēkṣyatadātikāyōbāṇaṅpradīptāntakakālakalpam .

jaghānaktyṛṣṭigadākuṭhāraiśūlairhulaiścāpyavipannacētā ।।6.71.109।।


tadā then, atikāyaḥ Atikaya, pradīptāntakakālakalpam glowing like the spirit of death, āgatam coming, taṅbāṇam that arrow, prēkṣya perceiving, avisannacētā with unceasing effort, śaktyṛṣṭigadākuṭhāraiḥ javelins, spears, maces, axes, śūlaiḥ tridents, śaraiścāpi and arrows, jaghāna struck.

Perceiving the glowing arrow coming, like the spirit of death, Atikaya struck it with unceasing effort with javelins, spears, maces, axes, tridents and even arrows.
tānyāyudhānyadbhutavigrahāṇimōghānikṛtvā sa śarō.gnidīptaḥ .

pragṛhyatasyaivakirīṭajuṣṭam tatō.tikāyasyaśirōjahāra ।।6.71.110।।


tatō that, agnidīptaḥ glowing like fire, saḥśaraḥ those arrows, adbhutavigrahāṇi wonderful shapes, tāni them, āyudhāni weapons, mōghāni unsuccessful, kṛtvā becoming, tasya its, atikāyasya Atikaya's, kirīṭajuṣṭam decked with crown, śiraḥ head, pragṛhya seizing, jahāra severed.

This great arrow of Lakshmana glowing like fire rendered the weapons in wonderful shapes released by Atikaya unsuccessful and severed the head of Atikaya decked with a crown.
tachacirassaśirastrāṇaṅlakṣmaṇēṣuprapīḍitam .

papātasahasābhūmauśṛṅgaṅhimavatōyathā ।।6.71.111।।


lakṣmaṇēṣuprapīḍitam struck by Lakshmana's arrow, saśirastrāṇam decked with crown, tat that, śiraḥ head, himavataḥ like Himalaya, śṛṅgaṅyathā peak like, sahasā forcibly, bhūmau on ground, papāta fell.

Struck by Lakshmana's arrow, the crowned head of Atikaya fell on the ground like Himalaya peak.
taṅbhūmaunipatitaṅdṛṣṭavāvikṣiptabhūṣaṇam
babhūvurvyathitāssarvēhataśēṣāniśācarāḥ ।।6.71.112।।


hataśēṣāḥ leftover not killed, sarvē all, niśācarāḥ Rakshasas, bhūmau on the ground, patitam fallen, vikṣiptabhūṣaṇam ornaments broken and scattered, dṛṣṭavā perceiving, vyathitāḥ distressed, babhūvuḥ felt.

All the Rakshasas who escaped from killing, felt distressed seeing the king and his ornaments scattered on the ground.
tēviṣaṇṇamukhādīnāḥprahārajanitaśramāḥ .

vinēduruccairbahavassahasāvisvaraissvaraiḥ ।।6.71.113।।


prahārajanitaśramāḥ pride hurt sorrowful, viṣaṇṇamukhāḥ desperate looks, dīnāṅbahavaḥ very sad, tē they, sahasā , visvaraiḥ discordant tones, svaraiḥ voice, uccaiḥ burst into, vinēduḥ roared.

All the Rakshasas with desperate looks, their pride hurt, became very sad and burst into discordant tones roared aloud.
tatastētvaritaṅyātānirapēkṣāniśācarāḥ .

purīmabhimukhābhītādravantōnāyakēhatē ।।6.71.114।।


nāyakē leader, hatē killed, tataḥ then, niśācarāḥ night rangers, bhītāḥ afraid, nirapēkṣāḥ listless, purīm city, abhimukhāḥ towards, dravantaḥ ran, tētvaritam quickly, yātāḥ from there.

With Leader killed, the night rangers were afraid. Listless they ran quickly towards Lanka.
praharṣayuktābahavastuvānarāḥprabuddapadmapratimānanāstadā .

apūjayanlakṣmaṇaviṣṭabhāginaṅhatēripaubhīmabalēdurāsadē ।।6.71.115।।


bhīmabalē terrible might, durāsadē difficult to approach, ripau enemy, hatē killed, tadā the, bahavaḥ many, vānarāḥ Vanaras, praharṣayuktāḥ extremely delighted, prabuddapadmapratimānanāḥ whose faces were like lotuses in bloom, iṣṭabhāginam filled with joy, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, apūjayan worshipped.

Enemy who was difficult to approach and of terrible might being killed, the Vanaras were extremely delighted. Their faces looked like lotuses in bloom. Filled with joy they worshipped Lakshmana.
atibalamatikāyamabhrakalpaṅyudhivinipātya sa lakṣmaṇaḥprahṛṣṭaḥ .

tvaritamathatadā sa rāmapārśvaṅkapinivahaiścasupūjitōjagāma ।।6.71.116।।


saḥlakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, tadā then, atibalam highly mighty, abhrakalpam mass of cloud, atikāyam Atikaya, yudhi in battle, vinipātya having killed, prahṛṣṭaḥ highly rejoiced, kapinivahaiḥ by hosts of Vanaras, supūjitaḥ worshipped, atha and then, tvaritam hurriedly, rāmapārśvam to Rama's presence, jagāma went.

Having killed that highly mighty Atikaya, who was like a mass of cloud, in battle, Lakshmana having been worshipped by hosts of Vanaras, hurriedly went to Rama's presence.
।। ityārṣēvālmīkīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēēkasaptatitamassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the seventy first sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
