[Ravana gets concerned about the safety of Lanka after hearing about Atikaya's death and commands Rakshasas to take care.]

अतिकायंहतंश्रुत्वालक्ष्मणेनमहौजसा ।

उद्वेगमगमद्राजावचनंचेदमब्रवीत् ।।6.72.1।।


महौजसा highly energetic, लक्ष्मणेन by Lakshmana, अतिकायम् Atikaya, हतम् killed, श्रुत्वा on hearing, राजा king, उद्वेगम् emotional, अगमत् overtaken by, इदम् these, वचनम् words, अब्रवीत् च spoke.

On hearing that Atikaya was killed by highly energetic Lakshmana, the king was overtaken by emotion and spoke as follows.
धूम्राक्षःपरमामर्षीधन्वीशस्त्रभृतांवरः ।

अकम्पनःप्रहस्तश्चकुम्भुकर्णस्तथैव च ।।6.72.2।।

एतेमहाबलावीराराक्षसायुद्धकाङ्क्षिणः ।

जेतारःपरसैन्यानांपरैर्नित्यापराजिताः ।।6.72.3।।

निहतास्तेमहावीर्यारामेणाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ।

राक्षसास्सुमहाकायानानाशस्त्रविशारदाः ।।6.72.4।।

अन्ये च बहवश्शूरामहात्मानोनिपातिताः ।


अक्लिष्टकर्मणा of unwearied action, रामेण to Rama, धुम्राक्षः Dhumraksha, परमामर्षी highly intolerant, धन्वीशस्त्रभृताम् skilled in the use of bow and arms, वरः foremost, अकम्पनः Akampana, प्रहस्तश्च Prahastha, तथैव च in the same way, कुम्भकर्णः Kumbhakarna, महाबलाः of stupendous valour, वीराः heroes, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, युद्धकाङ्क्षिणः desiring to combat, परसैन्यानाम् with enemy army. जेतारः not defeated, परैः hostile, नित्यापराजिताः conquerors of enemies, निहता killed, महावीर्याः great heroes, हताः killed, सुमहाकायाः of huge body, नानाशस्त्रविशारदाः skilled in the use of several weapons, महात्मानः great, अन्ये others, बहवः many, शूराः warriors, विनिपातिताः have been killed.

"Dhumraksha, a highly intolerant one, Akampana, the foremost of the Rakshasas and skilled in the use of bow and arms, in the same way Prahastha, Kumbhakarna of stupendous valour and heroes among Rakshasas desiring for combat, who have never been defeated and conquerors of hostile armies, have been killed. Great heroes of huge body, skilled in the use of many weapons and other warriors have been killed by Rama."
प्रख्यातबलवीर्येणपुत्रेणेन्द्रजितामम ।।6.72.5।।

यौहितौभ्रातरौतदावीरौबद्धौदत्तवरैश्शरैः ।


प्रख्यातबलवीर्येण whose strength and prowess is well known, ममपुत्रेण by my son इन्द्रजिता Indrajith, तदा then, यौहि famous, वीरैः heroes, दत्तवरैः blessed with boons, शरैः arrows, तौ both, भ्रातरौ brothers, बद्धौ bond.

"Both the famous brothers, Rama and Lakshmana were bound with arrows by my heroic son Indrajith who is conferred with boons and whose strength is well known.
यन्नशक्यंसुरैस्सर्वैरसुरैर्वामहाबलैः ।।6.72.6।।

मोक्तुंतद्बन्धनंघोरंयक्षगन्धर्वकिन्नरैः ।

तन्नजानेप्रभावैर्वामाययामोहनेनवा ।।6.72.7।।

शरबन्धाद्विमुक्तौतौभ्रातरौरामलक्ष्मणौ ।


यत् that which, सर्वैः all, सुरैः Devatas, महाबलैः mighty, असुरैर्वा demons, यक्षगन्धर्वकिन्नरैः Yaksha, Gandharva, and Kinnaras, मोक्तुम् to release, शक्यम् possible, तत् that, बन्धनम् bond, घोरम् formidable, शरबन्धात् bound by arrows, भ्रातरौ brothers, तौ both, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, प्रभावैःवै powers, मायया conjuring, मोहनेनवा by tricks, विमुक्तौ released, तत् which, न जाने not known to me.

"That formidable bond which could not be undone by Devatas, mighty Demons, Yakshas, Gandharvas, and Kinnaras got released by both the brothers, Rama and Lakshmana by their powers and conjuring tricks which are not known to me."
येयोधानिर्गताश्शूराराक्षसाममशासनात् ।।6.72.8।।

तेसर्वेनिहतायुद्धेवानरैस्सुमहाबलैः ।


मम my, शासनात् by orders, ये they, शूराः heroes, योधाः to battle, राक्षसाः Rakshasa, निर्गताः dead, तेसर्वे all of them, युद्धे in battle, सुमहाबलैः mighty, वानरैः by Vanaras, निहताः killed.

" All those heroes who have gone by my order for combat, have been killed in the battle by mighty Vanaras."
तम्नपश्याम्यहंयुद्धेयोऽद्यरामंसलक्ष्मणम् ।।6.72.9।।

शासयेत्सबलंवीरंससुग्रीवविभीषणम् ।


अद्य now, यः in that, युद्धे battle, सलक्ष्मणम् with that Lakshmana, सबलम् his army, ससुग्रीव with Sugriva, विभीषणम् with Vibheeshana, वीरम् heroes, रामम् with Rama, नाशयेत् to put an end, तम् them, अहम् I, न पश्यामि do not see any one.

"I do not see any warrior who will be able to wage with that Lakshmana, or his army, or with Sugriva, Vibheeshana or with Rama to put an end to them."
अहोसुबलवान् रामोमहदस्त्रबलं च वै ।।6.72.10।।

यस्यविक्रममासाद्यराक्षसानिधनंगताः ।


यस्य their, विक्रमम् valour, आसाद्य formidable, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, निधनम् stand the range, गताः gone, रामः Rama, सुबलवान् of great prowess, अस्त्रबलं च strength of missiles also, महत् वै how great, अहो Oh.

"Rama's valour is great the strength of his missiles is great, and his valour is formidable. Rakshasas can't stand his range."
अप्रमत्सैश्चसर्वत्रगुप्सैरक्ष्यापुरीवतियम् ।।6.72.11।।

अशोकवनिकायांचयत्रसीताऽभिरक्ष्यते ।


इयम् this, पुरी city, यत्र where, सीता Sita, अभिरक्ष्यते is guarded, अशोकवनिकायांच even the Ashoka grove, गुप्सैः secretly, अप्रमत्सैः being vigilant, सर्वत्र all sides, रक्ष्यातु protect.

"This city and even the Ashoka grove where Sita is kept secretly to be guarded by being vigilant on all sides."
निष्क्रामोवाप्रवेशोवाज्ञातव्यस्सर्वदैवनः ।।6.72.12।।

यत्रयत्रभवेद्गुल्मस्तत्रतत्रपुनःपुनः ।


यत्रयत्र where ever, गुल्मः troops, भवेत् are posted, तत्रतत्र here and there, पुनःपुनः again and again, सर्वदैव all over, निष्क्रामोवा be it exit, प्रवेशोवा be it entry, सः that, ज्ञातव्यः not to go out.

"Wherever the troops are posted here and there be it exit, or entrance should be checked again and again and not to go out."
सर्वतश्चापितिष्ठध्वंस्स्वै: परिवृताबलैः ।।6.72.13।।

द्रष्टव्यं च पदंतेषांवानराणांनिशाचराः ।


निशाचराः night ranger, स्वैःस्वैः who so ever, बलैः army, परिवृताः surrounded, सर्वतः all sides, तिष्ठध्वम् stay there, तेषाम् so that, वानराणाम् Vanaras, पदम् movement, द्रष्टव्यं च watching.

"Surrounded by the army on all sides, whoever it may be, keep watching the movement of Vanaras."
प्रदोषेवार्धरात्रेवाप्रत्यूषेवापिसर्वत ।।6.72.14।।

नावज्ञातेषुकर्तव्यावानरेषुकदाचन ।

द्विषतांबलमुद्युक्तमापतकतिंस्थितंसदा ।।6.72.15।।


प्रदोषेवा evening or, अर्धरात्रेवा or midnight, प्रत्यूषेवा early morning, सर्वत at all times:, कदाचन indeed, तेषु at these, वानरेषु Vanaras, नावज्ञा no indifference, कर्तव्या not active, द्विषताम् watched, बलम् army, उद्युक्तम् standing, आपतत्advancing, सदा constantly, स्थितम् stands where it was.

" At all times, whether it is evening or midnight or early morning, Vanaras movements are to be watched by the army without indifference. Indeed, the army should be active or inactive, standing, advancing constantly and staying wherever they are."
ततस्तेराक्षसास्सर्वेश्रुत्वालङ्काधिपस्यतत् ।

वचनंसर्वमातिष्ठन् यथावत्तुमहाबलाः ।।6.72.16।।


ततः then, महाबलाः great army, सर्वे all, तेराक्षसाः those Rakshasas, लङ्काधिपस्य at the king of Lanka, तत् his, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा hearing, सर्वम् all, आतिष्ठन् got up.

On hearing the words of the king of Lanka all Rakshasas and the great army got up.
स तान् सर्वान् हिसन्दिश्यरावणोराक्षसाधिपः ।

मन्युशल्यंवहन् दीनःप्रविवेशस्वमालयम् ।।6.72.17।।


सः he, राक्षसाधिपः Rakshasa king, रावणः Ravana, तान् them, सर्वान् all, सन्दिश्य enjoined, मन्युशल्यम् thorn of wrath, वहन् bearing, दीनः desperate, स्वम् himself, आलयम् abode, प्रविवेश entered.

Ravana, the king of Rakshasas, enjoined the Rakshasas and himself bearing the thorn of wrath, entered the abode desperately.
ततस्ससन्दीपितकोपह्निर्निशाचराणामधिपोमहाबलः ।

तदेवपुत्रव्यसनंविचिन्तयन्मुहुर्मुहुश्चैवतदाव्यनिश्श्वसत् ।।6.72.18।।


ततः then, महाबलः mighty, निशाचराणाम् night rangers, अधिपः Lord, सन्दीपितकोपवह्निः inflamed by wrath, तत् that, एव in that way, विचिन्तयन् brooding over, तदा then, मुहूःमुहुः again and again, व्यनिश्श्वसत् sighing.

Then the mighty Lord of night rangers, inflamed by wrath brooding over (his son's death) was again and again sighing.
।। इत्यार्षेवाल्मीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेद्विपप्ततितमस्सर्गः ।।
This is the end of the seventy second sarga of Yuddha Kanda, of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
