[Ravana gets concerned about the safety of Lanka after hearing about Atikaya's death and commands Rakshasas to take care.]

atikāyaṅhataṅśrutvālakṣmaṇēnamahaujasā .

udvēgamagamadrājāvacanaṅcēdamabravīt ।।6.72.1।।


mahaujasā highly energetic, lakṣmaṇēna by Lakshmana, atikāyam Atikaya, hatam killed, śrutvā on hearing, rājā king, udvēgam emotional, agamat overtaken by, idam these, vacanam words, abravīt ca spoke.

On hearing that Atikaya was killed by highly energetic Lakshmana, the king was overtaken by emotion and spoke as follows.
dhūmrākṣaḥparamāmarṣīdhanvīśastrabhṛtāṅvaraḥ .

akampanaḥprahastaścakumbhukarṇastathaiva ca ।।6.72.2।।

ētēmahābalāvīrārākṣasāyuddhakāṅkṣiṇaḥ .

jētāraḥparasainyānāṅparairnityāparājitāḥ ।।6.72.3।।

nihatāstēmahāvīryārāmēṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā .

rākṣasāssumahākāyānānāśastraviśāradāḥ ।।6.72.4।।

anyē ca bahavaśśūrāmahātmānōnipātitāḥ .


akliṣṭakarmaṇā of unwearied action, rāmēṇa to Rama, dhumrākṣaḥ Dhumraksha, paramāmarṣī highly intolerant, dhanvīśastrabhṛtām skilled in the use of bow and arms, varaḥ foremost, akampanaḥ Akampana, prahastaśca Prahastha, tathaiva ca in the same way, kumbhakarṇaḥ Kumbhakarna, mahābalāḥ of stupendous valour, vīrāḥ heroes, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, yuddhakāṅkṣiṇaḥ desiring to combat, parasainyānām with enemy army. jētāraḥ not defeated, paraiḥ hostile, nityāparājitāḥ conquerors of enemies, nihatā killed, mahāvīryāḥ great heroes, hatāḥ killed, sumahākāyāḥ of huge body, nānāśastraviśāradāḥ skilled in the use of several weapons, mahātmānaḥ great, anyē others, bahavaḥ many, śūrāḥ warriors, vinipātitāḥ have been killed.

"Dhumraksha, a highly intolerant one, Akampana, the foremost of the Rakshasas and skilled in the use of bow and arms, in the same way Prahastha, Kumbhakarna of stupendous valour and heroes among Rakshasas desiring for combat, who have never been defeated and conquerors of hostile armies, have been killed. Great heroes of huge body, skilled in the use of many weapons and other warriors have been killed by Rama."
prakhyātabalavīryēṇaputrēṇēndrajitāmama ।।6.72.5।।

yauhitaubhrātarautadāvīraubaddhaudattavaraiśśaraiḥ .


prakhyātabalavīryēṇa whose strength and prowess is well known, mamaputrēṇa by my son indrajitā Indrajith, tadā then, yauhi famous, vīraiḥ heroes, dattavaraiḥ blessed with boons, śaraiḥ arrows, tau both, bhrātarau brothers, baddhau bond.

"Both the famous brothers, Rama and Lakshmana were bound with arrows by my heroic son Indrajith who is conferred with boons and whose strength is well known.
yannaśakyaṅsuraissarvairasurairvāmahābalaiḥ ।।6.72.6।।

mōktuṅtadbandhanaṅghōraṅyakṣagandharvakinnaraiḥ .

tannajānēprabhāvairvāmāyayāmōhanēnavā ।।6.72.7।।

śarabandhādvimuktautaubhrātaraurāmalakṣmaṇau .


yat that which, sarvaiḥ all, suraiḥ Devatas, mahābalaiḥ mighty, asurairvā demons, yakṣagandharvakinnaraiḥ Yaksha, Gandharva, and Kinnaras, mōktum to release, śakyam possible, tat that, bandhanam bond, ghōram formidable, śarabandhāt bound by arrows, bhrātarau brothers, tau both, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, prabhāvaiḥvai powers, māyayā conjuring, mōhanēnavā by tricks, vimuktau released, tat which, na jānē not known to me.

"That formidable bond which could not be undone by Devatas, mighty Demons, Yakshas, Gandharvas, and Kinnaras got released by both the brothers, Rama and Lakshmana by their powers and conjuring tricks which are not known to me."
yēyōdhānirgatāśśūrārākṣasāmamaśāsanāt ।।6.72.8।।

tēsarvēnihatāyuddhēvānaraissumahābalaiḥ .


mama my, śāsanāt by orders, yē they, śūrāḥ heroes, yōdhāḥ to battle, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasa, nirgatāḥ dead, tēsarvē all of them, yuddhē in battle, sumahābalaiḥ mighty, vānaraiḥ by Vanaras, nihatāḥ killed.

" All those heroes who have gone by my order for combat, have been killed in the battle by mighty Vanaras."
tamnapaśyāmyahaṅyuddhēyō.dyarāmaṅsalakṣmaṇam ।।6.72.9।।

śāsayētsabalaṅvīraṅsasugrīvavibhīṣaṇam .


adya now, yaḥ in that, yuddhē battle, salakṣmaṇam with that Lakshmana, sabalam his army, sasugrīva with Sugriva, vibhīṣaṇam with Vibheeshana, vīram heroes, rāmam with Rama, nāśayēt to put an end, tam them, aham I, na paśyāmi do not see any one.

"I do not see any warrior who will be able to wage with that Lakshmana, or his army, or with Sugriva, Vibheeshana or with Rama to put an end to them."
ahōsubalavān rāmōmahadastrabalaṅ ca vai ।।6.72.10।।

yasyavikramamāsādyarākṣasānidhanaṅgatāḥ .


yasya their, vikramam valour, āsādya formidable, rākṣasāḥ Rakshasas, nidhanam stand the range, gatāḥ gone, rāmaḥ Rama, subalavān of great prowess, astrabalaṅ ca strength of missiles also, mahat vai how great, ahō Oh.

"Rama's valour is great; the strength of his missiles is great, and his valour is formidable. Rakshasas can't stand his range."
apramatsaiścasarvatragupsairakṣyāpurīvatiyam ।।6.72.11।।

aśōkavanikāyāṅcayatrasītā.bhirakṣyatē .


iyam this, purī city, yatra where, sītā Sita, abhirakṣyatē is guarded, aśōkavanikāyāṅca even the Ashoka grove, gupsaiḥ secretly, apramatsaiḥ being vigilant, sarvatra all sides, rakṣyātu protect.

"This city and even the Ashoka grove where Sita is kept secretly to be guarded by being vigilant on all sides."
niṣkrāmōvāpravēśōvājñātavyassarvadaivanaḥ ।।6.72.12।।

yatrayatrabhavēdgulmastatratatrapunaḥpunaḥ .


yatrayatra where ever, gulmaḥ troops, bhavēt are posted, tatratatra here and there, punaḥpunaḥ again and again, sarvadaiva all over, niṣkrāmōvā be it exit, pravēśōvā be it entry, saḥ that, jñātavyaḥ not to go out.

"Wherever the troops are posted here and there be it exit, or entrance should be checked again and again and not to go out."
sarvataścāpitiṣṭhadhvaṅssvai: parivṛtābalaiḥ ।।6.72.13।।

draṣṭavyaṅ ca padaṅtēṣāṅvānarāṇāṅniśācarāḥ .


niśācarāḥ night ranger, svaiḥsvaiḥ who so ever, balaiḥ army, parivṛtāḥ surrounded, sarvataḥ all sides, tiṣṭhadhvam stay there, tēṣām so that, vānarāṇām Vanaras, padam movement, draṣṭavyaṅ ca watching.

"Surrounded by the army on all sides, whoever it may be, keep watching the movement of Vanaras."
pradōṣēvārdharātrēvāpratyūṣēvāpisarvata ।।6.72.14।।

nāvajñātēṣukartavyāvānarēṣukadācana .

dviṣatāṅbalamudyuktamāpatakatiṅsthitaṅsadā ।।6.72.15।।


pradōṣēvā evening or, ardharātrēvā or midnight, pratyūṣēvā early morning, sarvata at all times:, kadācana indeed, tēṣu at these, vānarēṣu Vanaras, nāvajñā no indifference, kartavyā not active, dviṣatām watched, balam army, udyuktam standing, āpatatadvancing, sadā constantly, sthitam stands where it was.

" At all times, whether it is evening or midnight or early morning, Vanaras movements are to be watched by the army without indifference. Indeed, the army should be active or inactive, standing, advancing constantly and staying wherever they are."
tatastērākṣasāssarvēśrutvālaṅkādhipasyatat .

vacanaṅsarvamātiṣṭhan yathāvattumahābalāḥ ।।6.72.16।।


tataḥ then, mahābalāḥ great army, sarvē all, tērākṣasāḥ those Rakshasas, laṅkādhipasya at the king of Lanka, tat his, vacanam words, śrutvā hearing, sarvam all, ātiṣṭhan got up.

On hearing the words of the king of Lanka all Rakshasas and the great army got up.
sa tān sarvān hisandiśyarāvaṇōrākṣasādhipaḥ .

manyuśalyaṅvahan dīnaḥpravivēśasvamālayam ।।6.72.17।।


saḥ he, rākṣasādhipaḥ Rakshasa king, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, tān them, sarvān all, sandiśya enjoined, manyuśalyam thorn of wrath, vahan bearing, dīnaḥ desperate, svam himself, ālayam abode, pravivēśa entered.

Ravana, the king of Rakshasas, enjoined the Rakshasas and himself bearing the thorn of wrath, entered the abode desperately.
tatassasandīpitakōpahnirniśācarāṇāmadhipōmahābalaḥ .

tadēvaputravyasanaṅvicintayanmuhurmuhuścaivatadāvyaniśśvasat ।।6.72.18।।


tataḥ then, mahābalaḥ mighty, niśācarāṇām night rangers, adhipaḥ Lord, sandīpitakōpavahniḥ inflamed by wrath, tat that, ēva in that way, vicintayan brooding over, tadā then, muhūḥmuhuḥ again and again, vyaniśśvasat sighing.

Then the mighty Lord of night rangers, inflamed by wrath brooding over (his son's death) was again and again sighing.
।। ityārṣēvālmīyēśrīmadrāmāyaṇēādikāvyēyuddhakāṇḍēdvipaptatitamassargaḥ ।।
This is the end of the seventy second sarga of Yuddha Kanda, of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
